Australia's cruel deportation laws forsake dying father

Time is running out for a dying man wishing to spend his remaining time with his family, but scheduled for deportation by the Albanese Government. Gerry Georgatos reports.

ROBERT TAYLOR is dying. He has months to live. His family of six children and 11 grandchildren want him to come home and spend what time is left with them.

Robert is slated for deportation to the United Kingdom, his birth country. He has been in immigration custody for 16 months. He was born in England in 1973 but as a 10-month-old baby, arrived in Australia with his parents in February 1974.

In the nearly 50 years since, he has never left Western Australia. He has grown up Australian, bred here. He has no family in the UK. Unlike his parents, he never thought too much about pursuing Australian citizenship. He was fine on a permanent residency status.

But a carceral conviction late in life for a burglary brought him to the attention of the Department of Immigration. The Prisoners Review Board validated him with parole granted but the Department of Immigration waited for him as he was to be released and they transferred Robert from Bunbury Regional Prison to Northams Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre.

His Australian-born and bred family was devastated.

Robert made mistakes and did gaol time. After 50 years in this country, his whole life, he does not deserve deportation. In the last ten years, more than 5,000 residents have been deported.

I have come to know Robert. He is a good person. He has served his court-ordered penance. The slate should be considered clean. We must allow for the re...

Justice for robodebt "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Between 2016 and 2020, the Australian government inflicted nearly $2 billion of imaginary "debts" on welfare recipients, courtesy of an illegal automated overpayment calculation system. The policy led to suicides as people struggled to pay debts they didn't owe. The scheme was scrapped in 2020, and the illegal "debts" were later forgiven and repaid. And today, a royal commission into the fiasco has recommended prosecuting its architects:

The architects of Robodebt will be referred for criminal and civil prosecution after a royal commission handed down its report into the unlawful scheme today.

Commissioner Catherine Holmes has branded the former coalition government's debt-raising scheme an "extraordinary saga" of "venality, incompetence and cowardice".

"The report paints a picture of how the Robodebt [scheme] ... was put together on an ill-conceived, embryonic idea," Commissioner Holmes wrote.

"It is remarkable how little interest there seems to have been in ensuring the scheme's legality, how rushed its implementation was, how little thought was given to how it would affect welfare recipients and the lengths to which public servants were prepared to go to oblige ministers on a quest for savings."

It also finds that former PM Scott Morrison (who was social services minister at the time robodebt was created) misled Cabinet by failing to provide all relevant information about the scheme and its lawfulness. To prevent this happening in future, it recommends repealing Australia's blanket exemption of cabinet documents from the Freedom of Information Act. Its still secret who should be prosecuted, and what for. But the onus is now on Australian federal agencies to follow the recommendation. The problem is that they have a track-record of perverting the course of justice to protect those in power. Hopefully that won't happen in this case.

Victor Tribute the rudest man in the world "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Victor Tribute the rudest man in the world

Prologue

Victor Tribute wanted to be a hermit.

Not that he wanted to live in a mountain cave and take a vow of silence. He didnt want to be an eremite. He wasnt sure what an eremite was, but he pictured a religious nut, living in skins, having taken a vow of silence and perhaps a strict regimen of dawn chanting. He shuddered at the thought. Victor wasnt the least bit religious, was not fond of chanting and certainly did not want to rough it in the wild or in any other way, indeed.

Victor Tribute sighed. For while living as a total recluse had its attractions, he did appreciate his creature comforts. Moreover, he was a graphic designer who worked on short-term contracts from a rather luxurious highrise beachfront apartment and enjoyed his work. Didnt want to give it up. So for Victor, unless his cave had access to good quality streaming broadband and a reliable power supply, he would need to change careers.

But Victor had no intention of changing careers. He just wanted people most people, not quite all people to just keep well the fuck away from him.

Because Victor Tribute was decidedly misanthropic. He hadnt always been this way. He wasnt really a bad person. He paid his taxes. He said Please and Thank you. He stood up on buses when the elderly, pregnant and other similarly inconvenienced required a seat. But it had come to pass, over the course of his almost 39 years on Earth, that anthropoids had eroded him, like endless drips on granite. And now he was nothing more than a sliver. Nearly worn through.

He was heartily sick of people and their banal small talk; their tedious little dinner parties, where they discussed other peoples tawdry iniquities, revealing more in the process of their own. He was tired of petty gameplaying; of spending a lot of time with someone only to find out they just wanted to be friends. And so on. Ad infinitum. He wanted no more to do with all that. With all of them.

And so Victor Tribute wanted to be a hermit. Or was it a recluse? Whatever, as Victor Tribute sat in the apartment, looking down at the stick figures bustling around 19 storeys below, he began to devise a plan in his very unusual mind.

Victor Tribute planned to try out stage one of his plan at his family Christmas lunch. It seemed a sensible place to start, since family get-togethers were high up on Vic...

Construction insolvencies at decade highs "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Building bust

There were 519 more construction insolvencies in the June quarter, with Victoria and Queensland notably higher than the prior year comparative figure.

Over the financial year there were 2,117 construction insolvencies, up by 75 per cent from an artificially low 1,284 last year.

Annual construction solvencies are now at decade highs, and they haven't peaked yet.

The heaps of pressures on builders and developers continue, despite the growing housing shortage.

The off thing is the demand for accommodation has never been higher, but it's just not profitable to build at today's prices.

Student visa applications continue to accelerate.

Th Boarders.

I have come to the conclusion,

(Let us suffer NO illusions!),

That this house I have built,

At great expense to complete,

Is being used as habitat for others than me!

*

For ensconced here, is this plump cat,

A scattering of mice and a soft mat,

On my favourite chair near the fire..

A pantry well stocked (to say, I am loath) ,

That supplies easy living comfort for them both!

*

I can chastise the cat for hogging my seat,

But all I get is ignored, a licked paw and curled lip,

While the mouse makes relaxed play with my foot

Honestly.. its really a bit crook,

And just as an aside..makes for a bad look.

*

When a bloke must go begging to feline beast,

To please, please desist this luxurious feast,

Of lounging about idle near the fire,

While the mice make my living quite dire!

But such pleas, of course fall on deaf ears.

*

Tho I confess a Buddhist love for th dears,

That prevents me applying harsh punishment,

But by the living Jesus, therell be violence rent,

When Christian perdition falls on their contempt,

If the little bastards dont remove their bone-idle carcasses from my tent!!

Reserve Bank ignorant to truth behind Australia's inflation "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Reserve Bank ignorant to truth behind Australia's inflation

The Reserve Bank is blaming our soaring inflation on wage pressure, whereas economists argue the real reason is excess corporate profits. Dr Evan Jones reports.

IN LATE FEBRUARY 2023, Jim Stanford, director of the Centre for Future Work (within the Australia Institute), published a study on the evolution of factor incomes in Australia since December 2019. Stanford published a summary here.

During this latter period, corporate profits arising from discretionary price markups have surged, far greater than can be associated with real economic growth and not a product of productivity rises. Thus, Stanford claims, inflation in Australia since the pandemic reflects a profit-price dynamic, rather than a wage-price dynamic. Stanford notes that the Reserve Bank of Australias (RBA) February 2023 Statement on Monetary Policy mentions wages 75 times and profits once.

The RBA responded by claiming that significant price increases were confined to the resources sector, whose prices are determined by impersonal forces (supply and demand) in global markets. Nothing to see here, as this huge presence in the Australian economy is apparently outside the authorities concern or control.

Except it has been a conscious policy decision to not implement a national domestic gas reservation policy that would have restrained prices. Western Australia has had a formal gas reservation policy since 2006, recently ardently defended by ex-Premier...

In which the pond does a few detours before settling down with the hole in the bucket man to gibber about Gibbon, with cackling Claire offering indulgences as a bonus ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Sorry, the Robodebt saga will happen later in the day, and that thread is a thread for another time, and the pond doubts it will ever get is threads on, just as it rarely seeks out the company of twits ...

Meanwhile, every so often the pond is reminded by Crikey that there's a whole world out there that the pond misses out on because it spends its time with the fluff-gathering performed by the navel gazing reptiles at the lizard Oz.

Not the serious stuff of the Maeve McGregor kind, The pernicious long shadow of Scott Morrison (paywall), despite the tempting hook, The political reaction to Gladys Berejiklians fall from grace reveals something sinister about Morrisons enduring legacy.

Sure it's good to read, but the pond always knew there was something deeply sinister and weird about the clap happy, Hillsong-started-by-a-pedophile-loving SloMo.

No, the pond was thinking of a lighter offering of the kind offered by Charlie Lewis in Peak AFR: in a single day paper launches prestige watch fair and argues CEOs arent paid enough.

Of course Charlie went to print a little too early to catch the latest news about the AFR, which featured a racist cartoon, which the keen Matt Kean dubbed a throwback to the Jim Crow era of the deep south. (Graudian away).

Naturally Warren Mundine lined up to defend it, but he should have checked first with the onion muncher, who quickly rowed off into the distance. (The pond doesn't intend to show the ad, but for those who missed it, the ABC ran it here)

Always phone home to the mothership Warren, and find out your marching orders.

The pond only ever visits the AFR to check on the latest Rowe, necessary now that Twitter is a strange land - himself in trouble back in June 2020 - but Lewis reminded the pond of what it was missing with this opening:

The Australian Financial Review occasionally wears the reputation of being a paper for people with names like Plutus P Moneyfellows, who wouldnt feed what your family eats at Christmas to the hounds on their estate, who are so infuriated by the thought of baristas getting weekend penalty rates that their top hat simply flies off their head, landing in the caviar holder and comically splattering their dinner guests. There are days when this seems unfair. And then there are days like yesterday ...

We want the forest but fear the spirits: labour mobility predicaments in Samoa, part one "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

This three-part Professor Meleisea at the 2023 Pacific Update, on 15 June.

Since 2007, Samoans have become aware that those returning from seasonal work often have the means to build modern houses, to buy cars and furniture and home appliances, and to give large donations to their churches. Having money for these things raises the social and economic status of their families in a hierarchical society.

Evidence of the desperation to earn money from seasonal work was demonstrated in 2021, when thousands of anxious Samoan men and women tried to crowd into a church hall where registration was being held, accidently breaking its windows and doors.

The dilemma of labour mobility was expressed at a welcome home event for seasonal workers in Samoa last year. Our Prime Minister Fiam Naomi Mataafa told the assembled young men and women and their families, I want Samoa to be a place where our people want to live.

If you will excuse my clich, the government can be said to be between a rock and a hard place. In other words, Samoa wants prosperity without losing its most capable people, but at the same time it wants prosperity that cannot be afforded by working in Samoa. Or, as the Samoan proverbial expressions put it, we want the trees in the forest but are afraid of their spirits (E manao I le vao ae o loo mamalu mai le aitu I le aoa), or we want yams but we are afraid of the work of digging up stones so we can plant them (E manao e le ufi ae fefe I le papa). The government is concerned about the increasing expectation among Samoan people that labour migration is the only means of achieving a better life.

As of early 2023, Samoa had five labour mobility schemes under government supervision and regulation. The schemes have been framed by both the receiving and sending governments from a win-win perspective, intended to assist the sectors in New Zealand and Australia experiencing labour shortages, and at the same time assist unemployed Samoans and other Pacific Islanders to earn money, acquire job skills, and accumulate savings to send home to improve standards of living and economic development.

Of these schemes, one supplied a small number of semi-skilled workers for construction work through the New Zealand Canterbury Trade Employment Initiative; another supplied meat workers to a New Zealand meat packing company. But far larger were the schemes on which many thousands of Samoans have gone aboard to work.

The Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme in New Zealand commenced in 2007, to supply seasonal labour from selected Pacific Island countries to th...

Fukushima: Anxiety and anger over Japans nuclear waste water plan "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

By Tessa Wong, Asia Digital Reporter, BBC News, 6 July 23

A controversial plan by Japan to release treated waste water from the Fukushima nuclear plant has sparked anxiety and anger at home and abroad.

Since the 2011 tsunami which severely damaged the plant, more than a million tonnes of treated waste water has accumulated there. Japan now wants to start discharging it into the Pacific Ocean.

The UN nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has published a report endorsing Japans plan.

But since it was announced two years ago, the plan has been deeply controversial in Japan with local communities expressing concerns about contamination.

Fishing and seafood industry groups in Japan and the wider region have also voiced concerns about their livelihoods, as they fear consumers will avoid buying seafood.

And Tokyos neighbours are not happy either. China has been the most vocal, accusing Japan of treating the ocean as its private sewer. On Tuesday it criticised the IAEA report, saying its conclusions were one-sided.

So what is Japans plan and how exactly has it churned the waters?

What does Japan plan to do with the nuclear waste?

Since the disaster, power plant company Tepco has been pumping in water to cool down the Fukushima nuclear reactors fuel rods. This means every day the plant produces contaminated water, which is stored in massive tanks.

More than 1,000 tanks have been filled, and Japan says this is not a sustainable long-term solution. It wants to gradually release this water into the Pacific Ocean over the next 30 years, insisting it is safe to be discharged.

Releasing treated waste water into the ocean is a routine practice for nuclear plants but given that this is the by-product of an accident, this is no ordinary nuclear waste.

Tepco filters the Fukushima water through its Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS), which reduces most radioactive substances to acceptable safety standards, apart from tritium and carbon-14.

What do critics say?

Report Shows How Military Industrial Complex Sets Media Narrative on Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

by EDITOR, July 3, 2023, By Bryce Greene / Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) https://scheerpost.com/2023/07/03/report-shows-how-military-industrial-complex-sets-media-narrative-on-ukraine/

Wealthy donors have long funded think tanks with official-sounding names that produce research that reflects the interests of those funders (Extra!7/13). The weapons industry is a major contributor to these idea factories; a recent report from the Quincy Institute (6/1/23) demonstrates just how much influence war profiteers have on the national discourse.

The Quincy Institutewhose own start-up funding came mainly from George Soros and Charles Kochlooked at 11 months of Ukraine War coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, from March 1, 2022, through January 31, 2023, and counted each time one of 33 leading think tanks was mentioned. Quincys analysis found that the media were seven times more likely to cite think tanks with war industry ties than they were to cite think tanks without war industry ties.

With 157 mentions each, the top two think tanks were the Atlantic Council and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Both of these think tanks receive millions from the war industry. The Atlantic Council has long been the brain trust of NATO, the military organi...

Germanys power mix boasts more renewables, lower spot market prices despite nuclear exit "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Germanys shutdown of nuclear power plants in April did not result in a
ramp-up of lignite-fired power plants, despite concerns. Instead, there has
been a significant increase in the share of renewables in the electricity
mix, and the proportion of coal-generated electricity has fallen by more
than 20%.

Electricity in Germany has become cheaper and cleaner since its
last three nuclear power plants were shut down, according to new data from
the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. Net electricity
production from lignite and hard coal has decreased by more than 20%, while
natural gas has experienced a minor decline.

In contrast, renewables have
reached a record share of 57.7% of net electricity generation. According to
Fraunhofer ISE, the German energy system successfully managed the nuclear
phase-out. The decommissioned reactors reduced output was offset by lower
consumption, decreased exports, and increased imports.

Malinauskas Government facing backlash over costly university merger

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has gone back on an election promise and approved the merger of two major universities with zero transparency to taxpayers. Dr Binoy Kampmark reports.

NEVER TRUST the musings of university management, with their uplifting visions of sunlit glory, their honey-laced promises of healthy workplaces, staff and students. Being several steps removed from the trench, the field and the library, they are the last to be asked about anything of any consequence in the fields of teaching and research.

But that never stops these servitors of the bottom line from imposing, dictating and ruining things for others actually keen on the pedagogical craft and acquiring knowledge.

When such musings are paired with those of politicians, an unhealthy compact emerges. In South Australia, the government and two major universities have decided that a merger will go ahead. The land, in this regard, is a trodden one. Merger talks between South Australias universities have already failed twice in 2012 and 2018.

For some reason or rather, the current Labor Premier, Peter Malinauskas, when in opposition, resurrected the beast stillborn, proposing a University Merger Commission as part of his electoral platform. The policy said little about the value of teaching, focusing instead on one primary obsession: university rankings. Such a merger was needed to ensure that a South Australian university would cling to a top 100 placement in the rankings in order to ensure the highest quality research is funded in this state to drive economic growth.

Whatever the merits of university rankings and they are to be taken as s...

NAB data accounting for bank closures not the full quid

The National Australia Bank (NAB) has been pulling a swifty on customers who have lost branches since September last year, using incomplete visitation data to justify its decisions.

NAB has been blaming a drop in foot traffic for the branch closures in documents now required under revisions to the (ABA) Australian Banking Association's branch closure protocol to explain why a decision to close a branch has been made.

As the reason for the closures of 59 branches providing visitation figures for each branch as gathered from the previous year  NAB has said:

'Fewer customers are coming into branches to do their banking and foot traffic has lessened.'

A NAB spokesman revealed to this author recently, however, that the figures are only for over-the-counter transactions and business bag deposits, meaning customers coming into branches for general business are not captured in the foot traffic count.

General business is anything that does not involve a transaction, such as customers who have had to come into a branch to sort out IT issues, provide proof-of-identity documents, remove or add names to accounts, keep appointments for term deposit changes or speak to staff about loans, meetings with managers or any other activity that is not a deposit or withdrawal.

The deception was revealed when the use of the phrase over-the-counter interactions on NABs West Lakes' branch closure fact sheet was questioned, with information sought on what activities were being counted as foot traffic.

It is the only one of the 59 fact sheets that have carried this clarification.

The spokesman explained:

We dont use the term over-the-counter interaction, but personal banking/business banking transactions referenced in the fact sheets come from over-the-counter transactions in the branch and...

Vallee's "Forbidden Science: Volume 5" - items re the DIA and BAASS "IndyWatch Feed National"

I am continuing my re-reading of Jacques Vallee's book "Forbidden Science: Volume 5" and find small items of information which I have not read about anywhere else. They may well be small items of limited interest to others, but I document them here for future reference.

Item 1: A DIA UFO Collection Project?

Vallee, in a diary entry dated 26 March 2004, speaking of Dr. Eric W. Davis writes:

"Eric developed other sources, notably a former DIA senior officer who confirmed that DIA had a UFO collection project at one time. He promised to provide more information but died before they could meet again. His secretary found an envelope inside his desk sealed and addressed to Eric. It contained the man's notes about the project, and the real source of the fake MJ-12papers, with which the field of ufology remains fascinated. The story I was told is this: In 1961 the UFO Project inside the government, was taken over by DIA. By the early 1980's Rear Admiral E. A. Burkhalter, Jr. who was Chief of Staff and acting assistant vice director in the Directorate for Collection Management and his deputy Col. Roy K. Jonkers, USAF, were in charge of the project. They are shown in these positions on an org chart dated March 1981. The same document shows Dr. Jack Vorona as assistant vice-director for Scientific and Technical intelligence.
Burkhalter, calling himself 'Mister X' and a man named Polko, introduced as 'Falcon' decided to spread disinformation about UFOs. Apparently, Dale Graff, who monitored Hal's project on behalf of DIA, wasn't in the know. The remake of the Sandler-Emenegger documentary in which I participated was he correct platform, with the Norton episode, but when Pentagon P.R. man Colonel Coleman told us to 'go out on a limb' to draw out controversial revelations, I fortunately convinced Hynek we shouldn't take the bait.

Garden of Eden- the First Recorded WitchHunt "IndyWatch Feed National"

The following article is almost 30 years old and is as relevant today as it would be at any time in history when discussing the patriarchy, demonising of women and mens propensity to link women to the devil.

Jung would refer to this as men projecting their shadow upon women.

The article is by Joel Achenbach and exposes the Garden of Eden story as the first time that women are directly associated with the Devil in Christianitys misogynistic propaganda and the devastating implications that the demonising of women had then and continues to have today.

Garden of Eden the earliest linking of women to the devil:

From the article:

Question: Why are women historically considered the willing agents of Satan?

Answer: This goes back to the biblical story of the Garden of Eden. The Devil wants Adam and Eve to disobey Gods order not to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge (we heard recently that scholars think it was a tomato, though wed like to see the footnotes before we sign off on that). So what does old Beelzebub do? Disguised as a snake, he tempts Eve. The woman is the conduit to the man.

Eve succumbs, then seduces Adam into eating the fruit as well. Chaos erupts: They realise theyre as naked as a couple of jaybirds, they get booted from the garden, and eventually the federal deficit reaches $400 billion a year.

The mythical prejudice had horrifying results in real life: The vast majority of people executed in the Salem witchcraft trials 300 years ago were women; the men were, in most cases, relatives or associates of women suspected of witchcraft. The same pattern held true in the even bloodier witch hunts of Europe. To blame this on misogyny seems too simplistic.

Carol Karlsen, a professor of history and womens studies at the University of Michigan and author of The Devil in the Shape of a Woman, says there may also have been an economic motive. Many of the women accused of being witches at Salem had no sons or brothers, meaning that they were in line to inherit family wealth, Karlsen says.

There is a real fear of female power thats increasing in the 16th century in Europe, says Tom Robisheaux, a professor of history at Duke University. He said that priests feared female sexual power and the way women cou...

If you listen to the popular press, you might think the US finances are delightfully robust. Heres Dan:

The NASDAQ just closed out its best first half of a year ever, with $QQQ up nearly 40%.

A US$3 trillion apple

The financial writers are awe-struck. 2023 started out as one of the worst years ever. But instead of getting worse as everyone (including us!) expectedthe year is half gone, and its still not half bad.

The broad stock market has still not recovered from its 2022 sell off. The Dow, now over 34,000, is still more than 1,000 points below the high set at the beginning of last year. But the bounce from last years lows has been impressive. The S&P 500 is up 14% so far this year. But the aforementioned NASDAQ gets top billing.

Fortune:

The rally in tech megacaps gained further traction, with the Nasdaq 100 notching its best ever first-half of a year and Apple hitting the US$3 trillion milestone.

Nearly US$5 trillion has been added to the value of companies in the Nasdaq 100 since the start of the year, with the tech-heavy gauge defying bubble warnings and jumping almost 40%gains have been even more pronounced when narrowed down to the megacap space which has soared 74%.

In the economy, too, the press sees only pink cheeks and robust health.

Business Insider: Rolling recession turns to rolling expansion, says top Wall Street economist:

stocks could be set to see a 2023 rally continue and broaden out beyond megacap tech shares in the second half of the year, according to a closely followed Wall Street economist.

Look Alive! Beware the French Chaotic Descent "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

History may not always repeat, but it sure does rhyme.

For several years, discontentment among the working class in France has been simmering. It started in mid-November 2018 with the Mouvement des gilets jaunes or The Yellow Vests Movement gathering every weekend in Paris to protest over a newly imposed fuel tax.

This movement grew over time as others joined in voicing their discontentment over socioeconomic policies and the impact of globalism depriving them of individual rights and liberties.

There was a pause in 2020 as the world locked down over the outbreak of the Wuhan virus. However, it resumed afterwards and gained momentum.

In 2021, the French Government sought to exclude those refusing to get vaccinated by denying them the right to dine in a restaurant, enter shopping malls, or even maintain their current occupation.

Defiant French citizens pulled out their picnic rugs and ate in the streets, braving the mid-summer heat. Some barricaded supermarkets that were refusing unvaccinated individuals entry to their premises.

Tensions continued to simmer in 2022 as the French election in April saw the incumbent party retain power, though cutting them down to a minority Government. Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine conflict raged on, leading to energy shortages and inflation ravaging households struggling to make ends meet.

Youd think a fire burning for several years would run out of fuel. Not in the case of the French nationals! Theyve saved their best for 2023.

Earlier this year, the government enacted pension reform, raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. Citizens would have to work for at least 43 years to be eligible for retirement. It was signed into law in mid-April.

As many as 1 million workers came out to protest as the government floated the bill in January, kicking off months of strikes and protests. Many of these demonstrations resulted in violence and destruction of public and private property.

Things might be coming to a head right now. There is news footage of riots across the nation, sparked by the police killing a 17-year-old youth of North African descent in a Parisian suburb.

The many years of neglect, indifference and outright abuse against the people by their rulers are now starting to come home to roost. The country is burning with the rage of a thousand suns.

A warning

This poem is an *IA Writing Competition (fiction category) entry.

A WARNING

in Australia, when the birds hang upside-down
are they really right-side-up?
those larrikins swinging from the washing line
yellow-crested, beady-eyed
brawling on top of the traffic lights
swearing and shitting as people walk by
and screaming in manic delight

in Australia, where the endless white beaches hide
cute cephalopods with googly eyes
who turn violently blue in the blink of an eye

do not put your hands in the water
do not put your fingers under the lid of a wheelie bin
do not leave your shoes out overnight
or you will probably die

in Australia, where for only a very brief time
between the hot and cold seasons
can a human venture safely outside
where even the trees are pyromaniacs by design
filling their arms with gifts for the fire

it is hard to believe that the natural world

needs our delicate care if it is to survive
we must focus our upside-down national pride
on our stubborn ability to stay alive

Australian Charter of Human Rights will be a powerful tool to protect human rights "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Albanese Government must seize the moment to introduce an Australian Charter of Human Rights to guide government decision making, prevent breaches of human rights and provide access to justice, the Charter campaign today told a parliamentary inquiry.

In a submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Australias Human Rights Framework, the campaign, made up of over 90 organisations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with a disability, women, children, older persons, LGBTIQ+ people, and people from migrant and refugee communities, provided evidence that a Charter will benefit the whole community by:

  • preventing human rights violations

  • providing a powerful tool to challenge injustice; and

  • fostering understanding and respect for human rights

Australia is the only western liberal democracy without a Charter of Human Rights or similar in our laws. A Charter would mean governments must consider peoples human rights when creating new laws and policies, and delivering services like aged care, Medicare, disability services, and education funding. People could also take action and seek justice if their rights are violated.

The inquiry is due to report back on 31 March 2024.

Quotes attributed to Dr Cassandra Goldie, Australian Council of Social Services:

"People on low incomes are at increased risk of experiencing human rights violations. We urge the Government to introduce a Charter of Human Rights that recognises the interdependence of human rights and income inequality and strengthens social and economic rights."

Quotes attributed to Helen Dalley-Fisher, Convenor of the Equality Rights Alliance:

From Robodebt to ParentsNext, women have been disproportionately impacted by human rights violations enacted from government policies in Australia. A Charter of Human Rights would protect everyones human rights, and ensure government decisions and policies must consider womens rights. When governments think seriously  about womens human rights we get better policy, which means whole communities benefit.

Quotes attributed to Nicole Lee, President of People with Disability Australia:

Every disabled person should have equal access to human rights just like everyone else in our society, such as an inclusive education alongside our peers, quality health and mental health care, and dignified treatment that involves upholding our choices. Yet we have a Royal Commissions worth of stories of systemic human rights failures endured by disabled people. Thats why we need enforceable human rights protections at the heart of our laws through a Charter of Human Rights so that disabled people can participate equally in all aspects...

Whistleblower calls on government to act on KPMG and the rest of the consultancy industry "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed from Victoria

A whistleblower and former partner at multinational consulting firm KPMG has called on the Australian government to establish a Royal Commission into the industry, Back in 2021, Brendan Lyon, informed a parliamentary inquiry in NSW that he had been pressured by KPMG to alter records, to change the figures in the States budget. More specifically, on the NSW governments Transport Asset Holding Entity (TAHE).

He alleged that senior figures in the firm had conflicts of interest in relation to this.

Photo by Kate Geraghty: Brendan Lyon appears before the Senate parliamentary inquiry

KPMG responded by admitting it had contributed to complicating the situation and promised better practices in the future. But there has never been an admittance of deliberate wrongdoing. There was no proper investigation in NSW, even though the Australian division of KPMG had been fined $AU165,000 by the United Sates watchdog for cheating on online tests designed to improve professional safety requirements and ensure partners and staff act with integrity.

Brendan Lyon has now told the Senate inquiry that there is a need for a much more thorough investigation of the industry.

This comes in the wake of the PwC scandal. KPMG and PwC are two of the big four consulting US based multinationals dominating the industry. Together, they Carry out audits for the big corporations and government. This places them in an advantageous position to build extensive network that provide the grounds for conflicts of interest and corrupt practices to flourish.

Information is worth a great deal of money, and it is clear information has been passed on in breach of confidentiality requirements.

An investigation into their practices will contribute to uncovering the extend of it in Australia. The regulator has already found cases involving all the four. The big question is why hasnt this been acted on already?

Lyon called on the federal government to implement a default five-year ban on big four accounting firms found in serious breach of professional ethics by the new commonwealth regulator.

He also called for a ban on political donations.

In respect of its own procurement and management of consultants, the commonwealth should implement similar restrictions and obligations on public sector consultants to those bindi...

Keeping it fake: the legal and ethical implications of synthetic data "IndyWatch Feed National"

It may seem counter-intuitive, but even synthetic data can have privacy impacts.

Companies and governments alike demand masses of data for operational, policy and research uses, but between large scale data breaches and the re-identification of published datasets, privacy risks abound.

Is synthetic data the solution?

There are a number of use cases for which synthetic data might be proposed as safer than real data.  These include:

  • training new staff how to use a CRM system before letting them loose with a login
  • developing new patient management software
  • demonstrating how a data analytics program could work to map or analyse customer journeys
  • testing whether protected taxation data will be useful for a research project before going to the effort of applying to access the real data, or
  • generating fake student records at scale for an education-themed hackathon.

However as we discovered on a deep dive into this topic for a client recently, there can still be privacy impacts arising from synthetic data, such that both legal and ethical risks need to be carefully managed.

What is synthetic data?

Entirely fake data could be generated from scratch, but to do so is time-consuming, difficult to do at scale, and the result would likely not look real.  Unless the same statistical properties have been carried across from real data, fake data will likely not be useful for anything.  Hence the market for synthetic data.

The Canadian Privacy Commissioner defines synthetic data as fake data produced by an algorithm whose goal is to retain the same statistical properties as some real data, but with no one-to-one mapping between records in the synthetic data and the real data.  The UKs ICO has a similar definition.

The idea is to produce fake data that looks real, because it retains the same structure and level of granularity as the original.  But without including any links back to the real data,  synthetic data should in theory resolve the privacy risks found when using the original data.

How is synthetic data made?

To develop synthetic records at scale, in a way which generates data that is realistic enough to be useful, but without any one-to-one mapping which could led to ready identification of real people, requires a source dataset containing the real records, and a generative model.

The source dataset

This is the original dataset containing records about a gro...

Human Rights Law Centre joins Whistleblowing International Network "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Human Rights Law Centre has become a member of the Whistleblowing International Network (WIN), the global peak body for whistleblower protection organisations.

The Human Rights Law Centre has a long history advocating for stronger whistleblower protections in Australia, and is recognised as a leading source of policy expertise in the field. In August, the Centre is launching the Whistleblower Project a landmark, Australia-first legal service to protect and empower whistleblowers.

Established in 2018, WIN is the global membership network and information hub for the whistleblower protection community, with members in more than 25 countries. WINs membership includes non-profit organisations that provide access to free legal advice and support to whistleblowers. WINs members share expertise and collaborate with those working to protect whistleblowers.

In early July, WINs membership committee unanimously endorsed the Human Rights Law Centres membership application.

Kieran Pender, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, said:

By exposing human rights abuses, government wrongdoing and corporate misconduct, whistleblowers make Australia a better place. The Human Rights Law Centres Whistleblower Project will enable us to protect and empower whistleblowers and we have benefited immensely from the global expertise of the Whistleblowing International Network in preparing the project.

Anna Myers, Executive Director of the Whistleblowing International Network, said:

Protecting whistleblowers helps ensure the free flow of information for the responsible exercise of authority. Yet global experience has shown that even the best whistleblowing laws on paper do not work in practice without sustained effort from civil society. We are delighted to welcome the Human Rights Law Centre to our membership and are proud to have assisted the Centre in the formation of their Whistleblower Project which will be a huge boost for Australias whistleblowers.

A tyrannical move in France "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The internet is how people communicate now, and social media has become a natural platform for sharing dissent and organising protests. As a result, one of the first things tyrants do when facing mass opposition is shut it down, with blocks on specific platforms, or just a system-wide blackout. We've seen such attacks on the public's right to free expression in places like Iran, Egypt, Myanmar, and India. And now, faced with widespread protests against police murder and institutional racism, Emmanuel Macron is suggesting that France follow suit:

Emmanuel Macron is facing a backlash after threatening to cut off social media networks as a means of stopping the spread of violence during periods of unrest.

lyse officials and government ministers responded on Wednesday by insisting the president was not threatening a general blackout but instead the occasional and temporary suspension of platforms.

The presidents comments came as ministers blamed young people using social media such as Snapchat and TikTok for organising and encouraging rioting and violence after the shooting dead of a teenager during a police traffic stop in a Paris suburb last week.

We need to think about how young people use social networks, in the family, at school, the interdictions there should be and when things get out of hand we may have to regulate them or cut them off, Macron told a meeting of more than 250 mayors, whose municipalities were hit by the violence, on Tuesday.

Because obviously, only "young people" - non-pensioners? - use the internet nowdays...

This is simply not what democracies do. Instead, it is the action of a tyranny. Sadly, it seems like France is following Britain towards authoritarianism. The problem for Macron is that a government which walks away from democracy forfeits its legitimacy; if he behaves like a tyrant, there's no basis for complaint if he suffers a tyrant's fate.

Its only right if it's done by the Right otherwise its just not cricket "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Its only right if it's done by the Right otherwise its just not cricket

For those who move in elite circles, there is really only one rule: its never wrong if its done by the Right.

This rule has been borne out throughout the upper echelons of British society and filtered out to the far corners of its Empire since the beginning of the current and very established class system.

In the colony of Australia, despite the fact that we are still a colony under British rule, we like to think we are egalitarian. And in some ways, at least when compared with the mother country, we are. However, this one rule, or more accurately, belief system, of the Right always being right, has certainly endured.

This week, it was played out in full and vowel-enunciating focus when Australia won the second Ashes test against England. Stay with me as this is interesting, even for a non-cricket fan like me and for most other "right-thinking" people, not because Australia won, which is all very nice, of course, but because the Poms, at least those who belong to the English Establishment, are so affronted with their loss they can hardly contain their indignation and in fact, did not.

In the comical fracas that ensued, the lords at Lords booed their collective lungs out and even tried to trip up the Aussie players back in the Long Room the dining room of the "gentlemen's club" established back in 1737, which didnt even allow women entry until 1998 (its Australian counterpart, the Melbourne Cricket Club, was only 15 years ahead in the gender stakes) but lets not get stumped by the many elitist details.

Even the British Prime Minister has weighed in on the topic. Outraged, PM Suna...

(Claims of litter boxes in schools, it should be noted, are widely and repeatedly discredited.)
The North Dakota mother said her sons high school had furries, too. He's taken pictures of them, she said. There was a kid that was wearing a tail and the principal, we talked to him about, you know, the dress code . Like, these are the kids. But they just let him be, let him wear this tail everywhere he went.

It reminded the pond of that ancient Oz film where Miranda Otto thought she was a horse. It turns out that a bunch of deviants had conspired to get behind the scenes, leading to this moment ...

Maximising the impact of Australias scarce water and sanitation aid "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

New analysis undertaken by WaterAid shows funding to water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is at its lowest levels since the SDGs began. Focusing on OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) donors, in 2021 WASH funding represented only 2.7% of all official development assistance (ODA). This is despite the Global Multidimensional Poverty index concluding that across 111 countries, the greatest causes of deprivation relate to clean water and sanitation.

Since 2018, global ODA to the water supply and sanitation sector has declined by 28%. If current trends continue, it will be over US$2 billion per year lower in real terms in 2023 than the most recent high point in 2018. These reductions in WASH ODA coincide with the triple crises of COVID-19, rising costs of living and climate change despite WASH being essential to strong health systems, good nutrition, infection prevention and control, economic development and climate change adaptation.

Globally, the lack of ODA funding to water and sanitation is replicated when health funding and climate finance are analysed, with only 0.6% of aid for health having a strong WASH component in 2015-21, and only 0.1% of the worlds annual total climate finance going to basic water, sanitation and hygiene. Yet WASH climate adaptation measures alone require an additional US$83.7 billion funding per year globally.

WaterAids analysis shows that Australia consistently provides a lower share of ODA to WASH compared to the average of all other donors (Figure 1). If Australia had provided the same share of ODA as other donors averaged between 2015 and 2021, an additional US$150 million would have been allocated for WASH.

Most of Australias ODA financing for water supply and sanitation does not reach the poorest and least developed countries. Only one-fifth of Australias WASH ODA between 2015 and 2021 went to least developed countries. Over half of Australias country-specific ODA for WASH infrastructure went to 16 countries that are on track to meet their SDG 6 (water and sanitation) targets, and less than 10% went to countries in the Pacific, where coverage of basic water and/or sanitation serv...

The Fake China Threat, Then and Now "IndyWatch Feed National"

By Joseph Solis-Mullen | The Libertarian Institute | July 5, 2023

Republicans are terrible on China. Examples abound, but perhaps the most instructive illustration of this long-term handicap comes from the following quotation:

We must be prepared to go it alone in China if our allies desert us. We must not fool ourselves into thinking we can avoid taking up arms with the Chinese Reds. If we dont fight them in China and Formosa [Taiwan] well be fighting them in San Francisco, in Seattle, in Kansas City.1

This wasnt excerpted from a recent speech by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK). Rather, it was by then-Senate Majority Leader William Knowland (R-CA), in the January 1954 edition of Colliers Magazine. While perhaps particularly rabid in his Sinophobia, President Dwight D. Eisenhower privately opined that Knowland has no foreign policy, except to develop high blood pressure whenever he mentions Red ChinaIn his case, there seems to be no final answer to the question, How stupid can you get?2 The parallels between Knowlands time and our own are significant. Representing the respective nadirs of Sino-American relations, they are worth considering in depth.

First, a necessary bit of high-level background.

In 1949 Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party defeated the nominally republican forces of Chiang Kai-shek. Despite internal warnings that this was likely to happen, Chiang and his nationalist cronies being thieves, every last one of themcorrupt as they come according to President Harry Truman, this kicked off a firestorm in Washington3. Who lost China? subsequently became a driving force of the Second Red Scare that consumed American politics, distorting perceptions and constraining the ability of even the most powerful figures, such as Eisenhower or Secretary of State Dean Acheson, to act towards China in the more rational manner they would have liked.

The Intriguing Science Behind Rains Aroma: Can You Smell When The Rain Is Coming? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Have you ever found yourself standing at the threshold of your home on a sizzling summer day, or on a crisp, bone-chilling winter afternoon, convinced you could smell the rain coming? As it turns out, this phenomenon isnt universally experienced, leading many to question if its rooted in scientific fact or if it merely exists as a whimsical myth.

If youve browsed through social media on a particularly cloudy day, you might have noticed a polarizing debate: there are those who assertively proclaim their unique ability to predict rainfall through olfactory cues, while others appear notably doubtful. However, regardless of which camp youre in, theres some fascinating evidence that supports the concept of pre-rain odors. Numerous factors contribute to this olfactory phenomenon, with a primary component being the enchanting scent known as petrichor.

The Mesmerizing Mystique of Petrichor

Petrichor, a term rooted in Greek with petros meaning stone and ichor standing for the ethereal fluid coursing through the veins of ancient gods, represents the intoxicating, earthy aroma that pervades the atmosphere post rainfall, especially following a prolonged dry spell. Mineralogists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas first introduced this term to the world in 1964, unwittingly kindling widespread fascination with this mysterious smell.

Though petrichor consistently ranks among favorite natural fragrances for many people, the reason behind its appealing allure wasnt understood until recently. In an enlightening 2020 study, researchers discovered the tantalizing scent of petrichor wasnt just enticing to humans but proved irresistible to a variety of other animals as well.

Asian NATO: another failed plan by Washington "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

By Viktor Mikhin New Eastern Outlook 05.07.2023

There are increasing reports in the world media that the US-led NATO military alliance is planning to expand into the Asia-Pacific region. The idea was originally introduced by US President Joe Biden at the East Asia Summit on October 27, 2021, where he said: We envision an Indo-Pacific region that is open, interconnected, prosperous, resilient and secure and we are ready to work together with each of you to achieve this. The White House later issued a report titled Indo-Pacific Strategy of the United States on February 11, 2022, outlining President Joe Bidens strategy to reestablish American leadership in the Indo-Pacific region.

Among the remarks in the so-called newsletter that stood out was the declared necessity for the US to strengthen ties with Asian countries in order to tackle the urgent task of competing with China. But, according to its authors, NATO, which was formed to defend Europe against a fabricated Soviet threat, is allegedly a peace-loving alliance. In reality, it has evolved into a militarily aggressive bloc with a dominant presence in the North Atlantic region. This peace-loving coalition has militarized the continent to the point where war has broken out in Europe for the first time since World War II.

The question arises, do the countries of the Asia-Pacific region want to see their region also heavily militarized under the strict guardianship not only of the United States, but also of European peace-loving NATO? Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of this peace-loving bloc, insists on increasing the military alliances activities in Asia, as he stated publicly earlier this year during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The peacemaker from Europe said: What happens in Asia matters for Europe and what happens in Europe matters for Asia, and therefore it is even more important that NATO Allies are strengthening our partnership with our Indo Pacific partners.

According to Japans Nikkei newspaper, NATO will establish a liaison office in Tokyo in 2024 and use it as a center for cooperation with Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Geographically, these four countries are close to China and other states in the region. It should be emphasized that they are all strategically placed in the Asia-Pacific region and have common interests with the US and NATO, or serve them faithfully.

It doesnt take a genius to figure out that their target in this situation is China. Speaking at a May 26 press briefing, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson rightly noted that NATOs attempt to intervene in the Asia-Pacific region eastward would inevitably undermine regional peace and stability...

I Hope To God I Am Wrong: Climate Change Going Through The Roof "IndyWatch Feed National"

Why are we at Media Lens utterly terrified by climate collapse while other people we know are mildly concerned, blithely indifferent or cockily contrarian?

The simple answer is that we are doing this full-time and doing this includes reading the unfiltered reports and thoughts of top climate scientists on social media all day, every day.

Whenever we take a break from social media, the tendrils of the corporate body-snatchers again start to insinuate themselves. We are soothed by entertainment, by infotainment, by presstitute prestidigitation normalising the unthinkable. Despite a mountain of evidence, we are assured that the crisis is under the management of fundamentally decent, rational leaders. Yes, dear reader, our sense of crisis also abates.

There are two key responses to news of the latest climate disasters:

Its bad, but not that bad. Its manageable and we can carry on pretty much as normal.

An alternative take:

No, it is that bad. This is just the ball starting to roll it will gather more and more and more momentum, and it wont stop. We need drastic change now!

The second of these is inarguably correct. The first is the underlying message delivered by state-corporate media that have an existential vested interest in the status quo, in discouraging us from seeking serious change. And this is exactly why the level of public alarm does not yet reflect the terrifying, rollercoaster reality depicted in the soaring and crashing graphs measuring temperatures and ice coverage.

Professor Bill McGuire, Emeritus Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at University College London, tweeted last month:

I hope to God I am wrong, but to me, it is looking increasingly as if we have reached some sort of tipping point, with the global temperature, sea-surface temperature, ice loss, and other parameters, all going through the roof.

McGuire was responding to reports...

Asparagus as a Hangover Cure? "IndyWatch Feed National"

<p><p>Recently, a claim has been making its rounds on the popular social media platform TikTok, suggesting that asparagus holds the secret to preventing the effects of a hangover. Several videos promoting this idea have amassed millions of views, with TikTokers lauding the green vegetable as a miracle hangover stopper. But does the science support this claim? Can asparagus genuinely shield you from the unpleasant aftermath of excessive alcohol consumption? The answer, it appears, is not quite as straightforward.</p> <p> </p> <blockquote cite= "https://www.tiktok.com/@louislevanti/video/6968555624934165766" class="tiktok-embed"> <section><a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@louislevanti?refer=embed" rel="noopener" target="_blank" title= "@louislevanti">@louislevanti</a> *chases shot of tequila with asparagus* <a href= "https://www.tiktok.com/tag/learnontiktok?refer=embed" rel= "noopener" target="_blank" title="learnontiktok">#learnontiktok</a> <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/hangovercure?refer=embed" rel= "noopener" target="_blank" title="hangovercure">#hangovercure</a> <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/tiktokhacks?refer=embed" rel= "noopener" target="_blank" title="tiktokhacks">#tiktokhacks</a> <a href= "https://www.tiktok.com/music/Monkeys-Spinning-Monkeys-6746993352891189249?refer=embed" rel="noopener" target="_blank" title= " Monkeys Spinning Monkeys - Kevin MacLeod & Kevin The Monkey"> Monkeys Spinning Monkeys Kevin MacLeod & Kevin The Monkey

With Nix, Bitcoin Projects Can Accelerate Contributions And Deployment "IndyWatch Feed National"

This is an opinion editorial by niftynei, a developer educator who runs the Base58 Bitcoin protocol academy and an organizer of the upcoming, Nix-focused Bitcoin++ conference.

When you want to install a new app on your computer, where do you get it from?

Deciding which source to use is a problem that's surprisingly difficult to solve, but it's one that every computing platform struggles with.

Before the internet was widespread, new software packages were distributed on hard media, like CDs or Core, for example, you'd need to buy it physically at the store or have it mailed to you. You'd then load the disk or USB stick into your computer, and make a copy of the new software onto your local disk.

As a developer writing code, you'd have to physically hand out copies of your programs to friends and family. Or you'd work for a large corporation that had relationships with companies and computer stores, which would figure out how to get the software you wrote distributed to their clients and customers.

With the advent of always-connected computers, the landscape of software distribution forever changed. Now, instead of having to physically pick up a copy of the bits in a program, you can easily download a copy of it from the internet.

This made it much easier for new developers to write apps that anyone can download. The problem now, however, is answering the question: Where on the internet should users download the new software from?

The Hacker's App Store

The way that mobile phone ecosystems solve the problem of new application distribution is through a program on your phone called the "App Store" (or the "Google Play store" on Android).

Developers upload the latest copy of their apps to either Apple's or Google's servers. Those companies then send out a silent notification to all of the phones that have the app installed, and the app gets updated in the background on users' phones, without the users involvement.

If you're a user and you want to add a new app to your phone, in most cases you'll be able to find it in the App Store, and download it from there.

But not all software is available as a mobile phone app. Some software projects are desktop apps or tools that developers use to write new pieces of software. These applications need a distribution channel too. On desktop operating systems, we tend to call the "App Store" software by the term "package managers." They manage the packages of software that you download onto your computer.

Modern package managers consist of a central server, sometimes the app, and a client-side application which runs on the package user's computer.

If you're a developer, you've probably run into homebrew or...

Lies, Lies, and the Cause of Autism, Part 1: Wonderful Smackdown by RFK, Jr, on Vaccine Safety "IndyWatch Feed National"

by Mary W Maxwell, LLB

Dear Australians, You may be assuming that a man who is the nephew of the slain JFK and the son of the slain RFK is getting good media coverage in his bid for 2024 presidential nomination.

Wrong.  The MSM are doing their best to make him look stupid and dangerous.  In the above interview, he makes the US government look more stupid and dangerous than we could have imagined.

I have now gone to the two offending websites, HHS and CDC, to fetch for you some material by those two quasi-governmental organizations. (Thats Dept of Health and Human Services, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two wholly unconstitutional.) Kennedy accuses them of lying.

The day on which I retrieved the following statements about the safety of vaccines, and the non-relation of vaccines to autism. is July 4, 2023.  In a fortnight I will re-fetch, to see if he HHS and CDC will bother to back down.

By the way, RFK, Jr has been going at this for 18 years.  His famous interview at Salon.com took place on June 20, 2006. Salon soon scrubbed it, however.

In my 2011 book, Prosecution for Treason, I stated:

I  speculate  autism  was  loosed  on  the  population  deliberately. This may have been for the purpose of studying the workings of the normal mind, obliquely.   Or perhaps to cause distress in families. Causing distress is part of Tavistockian strategy of tension.

Now please watch the Kennedy video above, and then read this:

Jordan's response to questions about the disappeared Turkish-Emirati dual national Khalaf al-Romaithi have only raised further queries, say the MP who posed the questions, Romaithi's lawyer and rights groups.

Romaithi, 58, was detained in Amman on 7 May after an iris scan at Queen Alia Airport revealed an Emirati warrant for his arrest. He was initially released on bail, but then later arrested by plainclothed police officers, and was due to have his case heard in court on 16 May.

After an initial court hearing on 9 May, Romaithi has not been seen by his lawyers and family.

A week later, Emirati state media reported that he had been "received" in the UAE. A Turkish official told interested parties that Romaithi was taken by a private plane to the UAE on 12 May.

But neither his exact whereabouts, nor how he ended up in the UAE have been clarified publicly by the UAE, Jordan or Turkey, who have remained silent on the topic - until the release this week of answers to parliamentary questions raised by Jordanian MP Adnan Mashuqa in May.

Exposed, the multi-billion-dollar illusion of HIV: Part 2 "IndyWatch Feed National"

Readers of TCW will be familiar with Neville Hodgkinsons critical reporting of the Covid crisis since December 2020, notably his expert, science-based informed alarm about the mass vaccine rollout, so absent from mainstream coverage. What they may be less aware of is the international storm this former Sunday Times medical and science correspondent created in the 1990s by reporting a scientific challenge to the HIV theory of Aids, presaging the hostile response to science critics of Covid today. In this series he details findings that form the substance of his newly updated and expanded book, How HIV/Aids Set the Stage for the Covid Crisis, on the controversy. It is available here. You can read the first part of this series here.

By Neville Hodgkinson | TCW Defending Freedom | July 4, 2023

When an idea is fervently adopted by most of the worlds doctors, scientists and politicians and supported by millions of people, it is a tall order to make the case for a rethink. Such was the experience of biophysicist Eleni Papadopulos-Eleopulos, who 40 years ago developed a detailed theory about Aids that contradicts the generally accepted belief that a deadly virus, HIV, is the cause. Decades of unremitting censorship and rejection preceded her death from heart failure in March 2022, aged 85.

Her story has important, and disturbing, implications for our understanding of what has been happening with the Covid crisis.

Born in Greek Macedonia, she and her brother Dmitris were part of a kinder diaspora sent to Eastern Europe to escape the Greek civil war of 1946-49. She was cared for well, and graduated with a Masters degree in nuclear physics from the University of Bucharest, Romania.

In 1965, at the age of 29, she was reunited with her family in Perth, Western Australia, where they had emigrated. She learned English and joined the staff of the medical physics department at the Royal Perth Hospital, remaining on the books there for more than half a century.

In September 1976 she married Kosta Eleopulos, also a child sent to Romania who eventually found his way to Australia. She blamed herself for his death, five years later, from gastric cancer, believing she should have been able to save him with the knowledge she had acquired.

Her jo...

*Germany in the World* "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

The author is David Blackbourn, and the subtitle is A Global History 1500-2000.  The focus is on Germanys global influence abroad and no I dont mean the Battle of Stalingrad, though that era is covered.  Here is one excerpt:

There was global demand for German scientists of every kind.  The Southern Hemisphere offers two striking examples.  One is Latin america, thanks partly to Humboldts legacy.  There were hundreds of Germans scientists in Argentina alone by the early twentieth century, and many others in Chile, Peru, and elsewhere.  German scientists also played an equally outsized role in Australia.  We have already seen the impact made by the botanist Richard Schomburgk and his circle of 49ers in South Australia.  Among the many German scientists who arrived after midcentury and shaped Australias scientific landscape were several who were well connected internationally.  The geophysicist Georg von Neumayer is a perfect specimen of the type.  Neumayer enjoyed support in British scientific circles and was a disciple of the American astronomer and oceanographer Matthew Maury, who had himself been inspired by Humboldt.  In Australia Neumayer established an observatory in Melbourne, before returning to Germany, where he chaired the International Polar Commission in 1879.

Neumayer is a reminder that German remained, as they had been in the era of Forster and Pallas, inveterate scientific travelers.

Recommended, this is quite a good book.

While Rich Eye Off Imaginary Planet B, Theres Still Life On Planet A "IndyWatch Feed National"

Environmentalists have long pointed out that there is no Planet B. If we stuff up this one, it could be game over for humanity at worst, or a descent into an anarchic Hobbesian war of all against all, at best. Unfortunately, writes Professor Mark Beeson, no-one seems to have told the worlds plutocrats, who are literally taking conspicuous consumption to new heights.

Virgin Galactic has just inaugurated a form of space tourism that will take three or four passengers for a 90-minute joyride 50 miles above the surface of the Earth, where they can experience weightlessness and enjoy what one assumes is a pretty impressive view. The cost? About $450,000, plus a suitably super-sized contribution to the worlds ever-increasing CO2 emissions, of course.

Back on Planet A things arent much better. On the same day Virgin was entering what can only be called the space space, it was revealed that a microscopic Louis Vuitton bag sold for more than $60,000. The phrase more money than sense comes to mind, but this hardly does justice to the compassionless self-absorption necessary to do this at any time, let alone when so many face existential crises that they risk their lives to escape.

The jarring difference in the worlds response to the deaths of an estimated 600 or so people who drowned recently while trying to cross from Libya to Italy on an overcrowded 30-meter fishing vessel, and the five explorers who died on a sight-seeing trip to the wreck of the Titanic, is another telling illustration of lifes enduring inequities on Planet A.

The Titan, which was recently destroyed on a trip to visit the wreck of the Titanic.

Whatever your view of Titanic tourism, the reality is that not many of us have the necessary $300,000 odd to pay for the ticket even if we wanted to. The us in this case, of course, is the relatively wealthy population of the north, the developed world, or wha...

Okay We Get It. The Poms Are Whingers, Aussies Are Cheaters. In Other News. "IndyWatch Feed National"

Before we head off down that path again you know, the one where we all wake up a week from now with ranters regret after engaging in lengthy debates about things that mean absolutely nothing maybe we all should stop, take a breath, and ponder whether cricket is really that important after all, writes Chris Graham.

Last week, Australia was transfixed with the story of a missing submersible containing a rich buffoon and four unfortunate passengers, who were drifting around the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean trying to catch a glimpse of the Titanic.

Alas, their dodgy craft imploded before it could be located and pulled from the water by an armada of planes and ships, who were apparently far less interested in the sinking of a boat in the Mediterranean which claimed the lives of hundreds of asylum seekers.

Now this week, we have the Ashes scandal, or Stump-gate as media have inevitably taken to calling it. You have to wonder just how much fluff a nation can embrace.

This is, Im told, a sporting tale of extreme importance. National importance, even. One which involves a man in silly white pants rolling a red ball at a set of stumps, while another man in silly white pants walks a few feet away from the stumps when he really shouldnt have. Apparently, that was because another man (in black pants with a silly white hat) had not yet said the word Over, thus he was subsequently forced to raise one finger into the air and instead proclaim the word Out.

All of which sparked an international incident. Or in cricketing parlance, a Pom walked out of his crease and was run out by the wicketkeeper.

Thankfully, this bizarre but thoroughly fascinating and crucially important debate can be resolved in two simple paragraphs.

Paragraph one: Generally speaking, England is crap at sport, especially any sport they claim to have invented, especially cricket. Thus, more often than not they lose to Australia. So its not at all surprising theyre crying foul now, even though what happened was common-place, entirely within the rule...

William Crighton: Marysville Music Weekend headliner on bush psych and the healing power of music "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

As one of the headliners of Marysville Music Weekend which is set to take over the town from November 24 to 26 William Crightons brand of music is a unique sound that few have produced before, blending an Australiana soundscape with psychedelic elements to create the bush psych genre. We caught up with William to talk about his music, his experience and his story.

William Crighton: Redefining Australiana with bush psych

I wanted to create the sound that you hear in the bush, as well as the turmoil in your mind or the joy in your mind. That intersection between the inside of your mind and outside. I wanted to create that soundscape of place, where Im from and try to get that across in the music.

A theme often associated with William Crightons music is a heavy focus on country and place. There is a depth of relationship that you can have with this country regardless of your background, he explains.

I remember sitting around the fire with a fella and he said to me, we all bleed red. That really stuck with me because were human and its the human story, were all here now. Connecting with this place is something thats pretty important to me, staying in that mode and trying not to disconnect from the power of this country.

While the latest album Water and Dust is raw and gritty, and plays obviously to the bush psych genre, his debut self-titled album, was more of a crisp and delicate folk album that served as a discovery project and acted successfully as an entry point to William Crightons sound.

You grow and evolve as an artist as you learn more and observe differently. Empire, my second album is a pretty considered bridge from [William Crighton], then to [Water and Dust]. There are definitely some of those elements on Empire that go pretty deep on [Water and Dust].

On the evolution from his self-titled debut to Water and Dust, William says, I love the quieter stuff just sitting there with a guitar but I also love a full band sound and nothing quite gets me going like the full band. For him, writing with a full band is like the tapestry of sound working together to create an emotion that lets its story travel.

I had more people involved on the latest album but more of a vision for what I wanted. [My wife] Jules was a big part of everything we do. William states how he doesnt like to stylise his music. I like to mix everything up and see what the most interesting sound is...

Ella Hooper goes Way Out West: Eat the cake, buy the shoes, buy the tickets, lets do it! "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Ella Hooper is the latter after releasing her second solo album Small Town Temple, topping the ARIA Charts, touring her album, and setting off on the Way Out West Tour with James Reyne. We spoke with Ella about COVID-19, healing and feeling through music, and of course her second tour of the year.

First of all, we wanted to know what her secret was. Surely, she has some kind of superpower helping her achieve so many great things in one six-month period. Alas, there is no secret Ella tells us she is making up for lost time.

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Does it look like somebody post-COVID trying to make up for lost time? Everyones just scrambling. Every musician I know is working so hard to regain ground or build something new. Its a crazy time for us but it just has to be that way. You know what? I love it! So yes, its been a huge year, but I kind of dont really want to be doing anything else either, so Im cool with it.

I think everyones in a similar mood to just sort of live in the moment and buy the shoes, so to speak. You know, eat the cake, buy the shoes, buy the tickets, lets do it.

Ella started working on her new record before COVID-19, not yet knowing that it would be Small Town Temple. She said she was too busy to get into the flow and had trouble finishing her songs. COVID-19 afforded her the time to slow down and put pen to paper. Within 6 months Small Town Temple was a fully realised vision waiting for lockdown to end.

Ella describes the album as her healing process. Small Town Temple is a love letter to her hometown Violet Town, as well as a profoundly personal expression of family, friendship and her younger self. Ella took us through why she found writing this album so freeing.

I think its like a form of self-therapy when you write it down and you sing it and you commit to sort of analysing your feelings it really helps. A psychologist told me to let the subconscious know that youre listening to it, whether thats through journaling or meditation, or writing down your dreams. For me its songwriting. It lets your inner, inner person thats deep, stuck in there that doesnt always show its face day-to-day. know that you are aware of it, know that youre listening and that you sort of care.

AFTINET joins civil society in calling for the release of IPEF pillar 2 agreement and current texts "IndyWatch Feed National"

July 5, 2023: The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) is a new regional forum initiated by the US  that proponents say will strengthen economic cooperation between its 14 participants and divert supply chains away from China. IPEF, unlike traditional trade agreements, does not include market access commitments like lower tariffs. Instead, the main incentives are increased investment and capacity building projects (you can read more about the 'Four Pillars' negotiating objectives of IPEF here).

IPEF recently announced the substantial conclusion of negotiations for pillar 2, which aims to increase the resilience and sustainability of supply chains amongst the 14 members, following a Ministers meeting in Detroit in May. However, the text of the agreement has not been released and civil society is now calling for greater transparency from trade ministers ahead of the next round of IPEF negotiations from July 8 in Busan, South Korea.

IPEF is being promoted as a new model of trade arrangements with greater consultation with civil society. Yet the secrecy of the text means that civil society is unable to assess the agreement or ensure those benefits are real, and not a repeat of the trade agreements designed to benefit powerful states and transnational corporations.

By failing to release the texts and ensure the transparency of negotiations, IPEF negotiators not only deny the public and civil society meaningful input to ensure that the self-defined IPEF outcomes of fairness, collaboration and inclusivity are met, but also risk repeating the problematic approaches to free trade agreements that has led to their deep unpopularity.

AFTINET has joined with 16 civil society groups from IPEF countries in signing a letter to leaders and ministers participating in the IPEF negotiations in Busan to release the Pillar 2 agreement and other negotiating texts. You can read the full letter here.

Which NSW councils need ward redistributions? "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Prior to the 2021 NSW council elections, I analysed the population trends in another of Sydney councils which have been shouldering the bulk of Sydneys population growth. I wrote about Camden, Blacktown, a number of other councils, and an overall post.

Now as we get closer to the September 2024 elections, I have started paying attention to which NSW councils might be redrawing their ward boundaries.

Unfortunately there is no central record of the redistribution process, unlike in Victoria and Queensland. Each council handles redistributions through their regular decision-making process, usually involving a round of public consultation.

There are still some rules that apply to this process. Councils must make a final decision by 5 October 2023. Wards in New South Wales must elect the same number of councillors across a council area, and must be drawn so no ward varies from any other ward by more than 10% of enrolment. This process cant change the structure of the council the number of wards and number of councillors can only be changed with a referendum.

Some councils are obliged to redraw their ward boundaries, if wards deviated by each other by more than 10% over a specified time period. Councils can also choose to redraw outside of this situation, but this deviation obliges a council to make a change.

Its worth noting that I originally interpreted the legislation as requiring wards to fall within 10% of the average enrolment, which would have been much less strict in terms of forcing redistributions. Once realising this I had to re-run my calculations and update this blog post.

In todays post, Ill be looking at enrolment data to identify councils which are obliged to redraw their map, and those that have narrowly escaped.

When I was first looking into this issue, I downloaded the latest enrolment data for the 48 councils in the state which used wards in 2021 (at the time they were April 2023 data) to look for wards that were 10% higher than other wards in their council. But when I read the legislation, I realised that the trigger is based on a much earlier point in time.

Section 211 of the Local Government Act requires a redistribution if the council becomes aware that a ward deviates by more than 10% during a councils term of office, and if that difference remains at the end of the first year of the following term.

This means that a deviation would only force a redistribution if it had appeared during the previous council term. If a new deviation was to appear now, it would only trigger a redistri...

The final episode was aired on Tuesday night July 4, but Grace knew the result beforehand.

I actually already knew the outcome before the airing of the episode, Id been told yesterday morning, she said.

But I didnt realise how nervous I was until Helmo (coach Simon Helmot) called me to let me know the result.

Playing for Geelong Cricket Club and Armstrong Creek Cricket Club (Mens) in Victorian Premier Cricket and the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association, respectively, Grace takes great pride in looking to outsmart her opponents and taking key wickets.

Im hoping that it is another opportunity to challenge myself, and look at how the squad prepares and conducts themselves, Grace said.

Im definitely really excited, so Im sure it (training) will be on my mind until I can get stuck into it.

Id like to thank and shout out, everyone at (Armstrong Creek Cricket Club) ACCC, Geelong CC, my immediate and extended family. And also, most importantly, my specialist coaches Neil Gray and Scott Lindsey, for all their support in my cricket journey up to this point.

The recent approval of a new coalmine by the Federal Government appears absurd, considering the urgent climate crisis we are facing. However, this coalmine is essential for steel production as it produces metallurgical coal. Although some aspects of steel production can be made environmentally friendly, we still rely on mining for metallurgical coal throughout the steel production process.

Environmental groups understandably express concerns about the impact on the environment, climate change consequences, and harm to wildlife and water ecosystems. However, its important to note that metallurgical...

Many economists are also warning that we could tip into recession if accumulated rate hikes push too many people over the edge.

Is peppers port douglas worth it? "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

We are a family of 5 coming from Melbourne and looking for the quintessential tropical getaway. So ideally would like a resort with nice pools for the kids and so parents can relax with a cocktail. I also like the idea of being able to walk into town freely and walk back to hotel from dinner at night. Rather not hire a car. Seems like peppers is one of the only nice resorts that is walkable. But is quite a lot more expensive than other accommodation I've looked at. I'm trying to justify it by the savings we'd have from not hiring a car but not sure... I've read mixed reviews.

Any advice?

Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said Council wants to champion active and healthy communities, and one of the ways to achieve that is by supporting local sporting institutions. Councils Sports Grants will be awarded to projects that align with its Sports Strategy priorities which are:

Cats grilled by eager students "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Geelong Cats Mitch Duncan, Sam De Koning and Mark Blicavs werent too sure what they were in for when they found themselves in front of a junior media conference at Armstrong Mount Duneed this week.

A throng of tyro reporters tackled them high and low during a school hols visit to Club Armstrong, peppering them with a barrage of queries about their performance, their teammates, skills tips, diet and self-assessment and thats before they warmed up.

Mark, whats it like being the second-best athlete in your family? quizzed one, delivering a solid hip and shoulder to the star all-rounder before following up with:

Mark, do you think you should have stuck with athletics instead of footy?

Blicavs fended the knocks off bravely, citing his sister Saras Olympic selection and his parents Olympic and world-level basketball legacy. Hed be happy to be number two, he says.

Mitch, whos your most annoying teammate? prompted another youngster, to which Duncan smartly felled tall timber Sam De Koning with a gleeful spray about his uber-enthusiasm and non-stop energy.

Whats something we dont know about you? another youngster quizzed Sam, learning the backman is one of a 10-kid family. And yeah, they scrap occasionally.

The questions kept rolling and smarting.

Sam, what was it like growing up in your brothers shadow?

Sam, is there any chance Geelong could do a player swap for your brother Tom next year?

Ouch!

Mitch, do you think it would have been a better decision to retire on a high after the grand final?

More ducking and weaving.

Which teammate has the funniest nickname? What is it?

The boys quickly turned their attention to Zach Touhy, aka Reg, after the Harry Potter character Reginald Cattermole with his drooping moustache.

Evidently, Zach didnt like the name at first but its grown on him and hes taken full ownership of it, his teammates laughed, breathing a sigh of relief the focus was finally off them.

He even calls himself Reg now, Blicavs said.

Saltbushes Bloom As Our Next Big El Nino Lurks "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Sheep and cattle farmers across Australias south east have begun planting an elite variety of Old Man Saltbush this winter, to supplement feed during dryer conditions in anticipation of a potential El Nino predicted to cause widespread droughts in Australia in the coming years.

Anameka Saltbush is a specially selected variety of the drought-tolerant native shrub, developed over 15 years by the CSIRO, with partners in government and industry. Its unique for its higher nutritional value and improved palatability for livestock and its potential to regenerate the topsoil of land that is too saline or infertile. Its fast-growing, and occurs naturally in WA, SA, NT, Vic, NSW and Queensland.

Saltbush is generally not the first choice of feed for livestock, but its a genuine supplement when pastures have dried up. Even humans can eat it the seeds and leaves of Old Man Saltbush have long been a staple in bush tucker circles. It can be used like a leafy vegetable or salad, blanched or sauted, wrapped around meat or fish, or used as a stuffing for poultry. You can even dry it, for use as an herb. It has, as you might expect, a salty flavour, and is rich in protein, antioxidants and minerals.

Dr Hayley Norman selected Anameka Saltbush from 60,000 plants. (IMAGE: Damien Smith Photography, Supplied)

CSIRO agricultural scientist, Dr Hayley Norman, says that during dry years when there is a shortage of available feed, Anameka saltbush can provide key nutrients that improve livestock productivity and health.

Anameka Saltbush is a moderate-energy, high crude protein and sulphur feed source that is full of essential minerals and antioxidants, Dr Norman said. It grows well on most landscapes, and once established, Anameka Saltbush can become a living haystack for grazing livestock for more than 20 years if managed correctly.

CSIROs Drought Resilience Mission is driving wider adoption of Anameka Saltbush in drought-prone regions across southeast A...

Gobota take care of our elders "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Gobata means take care in the Wadawurrung language and its there for all to see along the Surf Coast Highway.

Gobota is the NAIDOC Week message posted at Mount Duneed by Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC).

WTOAC joined forces with Armstrongs Villawood Properties on Wadawurrung Country to highlight the annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples history, culture and achievements.

NAIDOC, the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, is driving the theme For Our Elders in its 2023 showcase, blending neatly with the Wadawurrung gobata message.

Our Elders shape and guide each generation, passing on cultural knowledge to ensure we all understand our cultural obligation to take care of Wadawurrung Country, Wadawurrung woman and WTOAC recognition and negotiations general manager Rebekah Devlin said.

In Wadawurrung language, we do not have a word for goodbye as we hope to see you again, we say gobata instead.

Gobata means take care, but it can be used in many contexts: take care of each other, of yourself, of Country but it is up to all of us to take care of our Elders.

This is something we can all aspire to, not just during NAIDOC Week, but every week ensuring our Elders are cared for and treated with the respect they so dearly deserve.

WTOAC CEO Liam Murphy thanked Villawood Properties for its support in giving more visibility to Wadawurrung language on the Surf Coast Highway, adding that hed love to see a permanent installation of Wadawurrung Country letters in the region one day.

Villawood executive director Rory Costelloe said the Gobata signage, in giant corten steel lettering, was an important message by the community for the community.

NAIDOC Week is a great time for people to learn about First Nations cultures and histories, he said.

The gobata message is a warm and welcoming message, an invitation to acknowledge one of the oldest, continuous living cultures on the planet. Our First Nations are an integral part of Australia a part we can share and celebrate.

Marine Le Pen likely to be next French President "IndyWatch Feed National"

Alexander Mercouris of the Duran makes a good summary of what is happening in French politics at the moment in this short embedded video. Inside I make some comments.

Alexander Mercouris's statement that France has a lot of independent media strikes me as generous, since the mainstream has been dominated by a US-syndicated newsmedia for years now, with state channels that sound just like ABC Australia.  But French populations are far more localised than most other 'modern' states, retaining a more clan-based population distribution , thus able to transmit political and other knowledge through generations in other ways. Le Pen's representatives gained ground initially in regional elections. (See my new book, Sheila Newman, , (2023)). France is still slightly protected by having its own language, thus suffering less censorship from youtube etc, and it retains public intellectuals who seem just now to be waking from a kind of coma induced by Anglosphere-EU-influenced political correctness.

This awakening is probably the result of not being able to stand the crazy EU narrative accompanying the Ukraine-Russia war, along with the economic fall out and the massive wave of Ukrainian refugees. The revolts of the urban lower classes may also be partly influenced, especially where they have Muslim demographics, by disgust with France-NATO's conduct in Africa and the Middle East, which the rise of BRICs and its own news-services has brought into relief.  The use of VPNs to get round France's EU-dictated censorship of non-NATO-vetted news would be particularly high in this diaspora and among French intellectuals.  We can only hope that some of Australia's immigrant populations may be similarly well-informed, enough to affect the sickening drone of public propaganda that dominates Australia felix.

(Alexander Mercouris is, by the way, from a famous Greek political family. His father was a Greek partisan and he was nephew of the politically influent...

Far North Coast water strategy released "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The NSW Labor government released its Far North Coast Regional Water Strategy on Tuesday, in which it describes a clear vision for the future of sustainable water from Tweed Heads to Evans Head, Kyogle to Casino, Lismore to Byron Bay and everywhere in between.

The press release by Minister for Water and the North Coast, Rose Jackson, claims the framework was developed through extensive planning and consultation and the strategys key priorities over the next 20 years and beyond were safeguarding town water supplies, boosting the resilience of natural systems, improving river connectivity and delivering better First Nations outcomes.

According to the document, available at water.dpie.nsw.gov.au, 25 actions were developed  to help to improve the Far North Coasts readiness to adapt to a more variable climate.

Chris Hedges: They lied about Afghanistan. They lied about Iraq. And they are lying about Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed National"

Chris Hedges, American war correspondent, investigative journalist, and winner of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, has created a storm for his revelations about the war in Ukraine. In this article (Scheerpost 2 July 2023), Hedges writes about the lies and misrepresentation used by Washington to prosecute wars in the past are being used over Ukraine. This is another war to serve US interests. The armaments industry, serviced by the pimps of war.

The playbook the pimps of war use to lure us into one military fiasco after another, including Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and now Ukraine, does not change. Freedom and democracy are threatened. Evil must be vanquished. Human rights must be protected. The fate of Europe and NATO, along with a rules based international order is at stake. Victory is assured.

The Ukraine flag is the present mascot to cover the lies for justifying war

The results are also the same. The justifications and narratives are exposed as lies. The cheery prognosis is false. Those on whose behalf we are supposedly fighting are as venal as those we are fighting against.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a war crime, although one that was provoked by NATO expansion and by the United States backing of the 2014 Maidan coup which ousted the democratically elected Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Yanukovych wanted eco...

Worst book tours ever. "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

John Banville has a delightful piece in British Esquire about cursed books events. It made my bowels shake in recognition, especially the smiling oldster in golf shirt and baggy shorts

One day in 1990, I was flown first class from Dublin to Phoenix, Arizona, to read at the Irish Cultural Centre there. Five people turned up to listen to me. None of them had read my books, and it was clear that none of them had the slightest intention of doing so. They were the sons and daughter of Irish immigrants, and were there simply to see a real, live son the Oul Sod.

It was in New York, though, in one of that citys sprawling emporia, Rizzoli, perhaps, or Barnes & Noble, that I was properly put in my place. My reading was at an end, and I was signing for a half dozen or so devotees such enthusiasm! such dauntless loyalty! when an alarmingly large and glossily grinning plutocrat elbowed his way forward and, ignoring the stack of my as yet unbought books, thrust a great furred paw at me and boomed: "Sir, let me shake the hand that shook the hand of Seamus Heaney!" The hand that shook the hand of Heaney sadly shook his, and he was gone.

Then there was Florida. Ah, Florida, most beautifully named of all the states, according to Elizabeth Bishop. I was in Miami for the Book Fair. The reading took place in a vast, glass and steel store. My partner for the occasion had the day before been presented with the Pulitzer Prize, so I had the benefit of his audience.

Afterwards, there was a book signing in a courtyard in front of the store. Two tables side by side, one piled with his books, one with mine. Two queues formed. His stretched off into the sunlit Floridan distance. I had three people. One was the inevitable madman, this one in a raincoat. The second was a student who was writing a paper on the work. The third was a smiling oldster in golf shirt and baggy shorts, who leaned down to me and murmured, "Im not going to buy your book, but you looked so lonely I had to come and say a word to you."

Die Debatte um Sicherheitsgarantien "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Russland demilitarisieren

Return to portals "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

This is one of those Saturn Returns stories and begins with a dream in 2016

I had begun work as a curator and fell into a swine flu fever.

There was one sleep where I was walking among River Red Gums and saw human-shaped scars on the trunks, then realised people had gone through these doorways.

About a month later I saw this painting by Veronica Collins at Griffith Regional Art Gallery called 'Through the Port Holes' and spoke with Ray Wholohan about inviting her to be part of an exhibition.

We spoke about the theme of relationships to the Riverina and she sent a letter of support.

When I told her about my dream, she laughed and said "You've been visiting my world."

It was thrilling to see her painting hanging in the Ngurambang exhibition and I hope it's the first thing you'll see when you enter the Gallery, from Wednesdays to Sundays until 20 August.

The Pacific Engagement Visa needs to be delivered "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Labors announcement that it would introduce a Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV) to provide Pacific Island citizens with 3,000 permanent resident visas annually has been warmly welcomed in the region. Good progress was made with the new visa, with crucial details released at the start of the year, but it is now clear that the target starting date of 1 July has been missed.

The legislation to enable the PEV passed through the House of Representatives in March, and was tabled for consideration in the Senate in June. However, it never made it to the Senate floor.

While all parties have expressed support for the PEV in principle, the sticking point has become the lottery behind the visa. Labor has modelled the PEV on equivalent New Zealand lottery-based Pacific visas (the Samoa Quota and Pacific Access Category visas). The Coalition has opposed the introduction of a lottery into Australias migration system, meaning that the prospects for the actual introduction of the PEV are now in the hands of the Senate crossbench.

The Greens and the Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN) have indicated their support for the PEV. The Greens have proposed (in the report of the Senate committee established to scrutinise the bill) an amendment explicitly limiting the lottery to the PEV, and the JLN has proposed a motion supporting the PEV but also indicating support for developing permanent pathways for temporary Pacific workers. Both proposals seem reasonable, meaning that the government should have the numbers to pass the PEV enabling legislation. If so, then it must just have been a matter of a crowded legislative agenda that prevented this legislation being passed in June, and the PEV legislation should be tabled and passed when the Senate next meets at the end of July.

We certainly hope so. Having raised the expectations of the Pacific, and of Australias Pacific diasporas, it would be not only tragic but deeply damaging for Australias reputation were it now to walk away from the PEV.

The best scenario would be passage with bipartisan support. The Opposition has indicated that they support the PEV in principle, but not the lottery. They have instead called for PEV eligibility to be restricted to temporary Pacific migrants in Aus...

Working in a Team: Scuba diving is all about teamwork! Underwater, communication and collaboration are essential for a safe and enjoyable dive. By working together with their dive buddies, teens learn to trust and support one another, honing their teamwork skills and creating a sense of camaraderie.

Self-confidence: Scuba diving pushes teens out of their comfort zones and challenges them to overcome fears. As they conquer underwater environments and master new skills, teens develop resilience and a sense of accomplishment, boosting their self-confidence and belief in their abilities.

Physical Fitness: Scuba diving is a fantastic way to stay in good physical health. The act of swimming against water resistance strengthens muscles, improves cardiovascular health, and enhances overall fitness.

Additionally, the weightlessness experienced underwater reduces strain on joints, making it a low-impact exercise suitable for teens of varying fitness levels.

Mental Well-being: Submerging into the underwater world provides a unique escape from the stresses of everyday life. The tranquillity of the ocean promotes relaxation and mindfulness, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of peace.
