Tourism set to recapture record highs "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Down Under back in favour

Tourism services exports hit the highest level in 41 months in May, and tourism to Australia is on track to hit record highs by as soon as this coming summer.

It's also adding to demand for Airbnb stock and other accommodation.

Exports increased 5 per cent in May, driven by gold and services exports.

It's been an awesome boom for the value of Australia's exports, though this is probably on its last legs as key commodity prices such as coal, iron ore, and gas are either now declining or well off their highs.

Malinauskas Government facing backlash over costly university merger

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has gone back on an election promise and approved the merger of two major universities with zero transparency to taxpayers. Dr Binoy Kampmark reports.

NEVER TRUST the musings of university management, with their uplifting visions of sunlit glory, their honey-laced promises of healthy workplaces, staff and students. Being several steps removed from the trench, the field and the library, they are the last to be asked about anything of any consequence in the fields of teaching and research.

But that never stops these servitors of the bottom line from imposing, dictating and ruining things for others actually keen on the pedagogical craft and acquiring knowledge.

When such musings are paired with those of politicians, an unhealthy compact emerges. In South Australia, the government and two major universities have decided that a merger will go ahead. The land, in this regard, is a trodden one. Merger talks between South Australias universities have already failed twice in 2012 and 2018.

For some reason or rather, the current Labor Premier, Peter Malinauskas, when in opposition, resurrected the beast stillborn, proposing a University Merger Commission as part of his electoral platform. The policy said little about the value of teaching, focusing instead on one primary obsession: university rankings. Such a merger was needed to ensure that a South Australian university would cling to a top 100 placement in the rankings in order to ensure the highest quality research is funded in this state to drive economic growth.

Whatever the merits of university rankings and they are to be taken as s...

The Fossil Fuel Proliferation Threat "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Climate change negotiations and debates are characterised by some curious features. For one, there are interminable stretches of discussion that never seem to feature the agents of cause. NAB data accounting for bank closures not the full quid "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

NAB data accounting for bank closures not the full quid

The National Australia Bank (NAB) has been pulling a swifty on customers who have lost branches since September last year, using incomplete visitation data to justify its decisions.

NAB has been blaming a drop in foot traffic for the branch closures in documents now required under revisions to the (ABA) Australian Banking Association's branch closure protocol to explain why a decision to close a branch has been made.

As the reason for the closures of 59 branches providing visitation figures for each branch as gathered from the previous year  NAB has said:

'Fewer customers are coming into branches to do their banking and foot traffic has lessened.'

A NAB spokesman revealed to this author recently, however, that the figures are only for over-the-counter transactions and business bag deposits, meaning customers coming into branches for general business are not captured in the foot traffic count.

General business is anything that does not involve a transaction, such as customers who have had to come into a branch to sort out IT issues, provide proof-of-identity documents, remove or add names to accounts, keep appointments for term deposit changes or speak to staff about loans, meetings with managers or any other activity that is not a deposit or withdrawal.

The deception was revealed when the use of the phrase over-the-counter interactions on NABs West Lakes' branch closure fact sheet was questioned, with information sought on what activities were being counted as foot traffic.

It is the only one of the 59 fact sheets that have carried this clarification.

The spokesman explained:

We dont use the term over-the-counter interaction, but personal banking/business banking transactions referenced in the fact sheets come from over-the-counter transactions in the branch and...

The problem with Peter Dutton is that, right or wrong, we feel we know him. We might have missed noticing the human side to the man, but that is because he spent so much time showing us how tough and no-nonsense he is. He fits the stereotype of the Queensland Liberal, an old fashioned head-kicker.

Meanwhile, this is probably a good time to explain why were so gloomy and doomy

Wheres the recession?

Wheres the stock market crash?

Has the bear market turned into a bull market? Has the coming recession been upstaged by an approaching boom?

Whats the problem? Why spoil a good party by mentioning that the curtains are on fire and the police are at the door?

If you listen to the popular press, you might think the US finances are delightfully robust. Heres Dan:

The NASDAQ just closed out its best first half of a year ever, with $QQQ up nearly 40%.

A US$3 trillion apple

The financial writers are awe-struck. 2023 started out as one of the worst years ever. But instead of getting worse as everyone (including us!) expectedthe year is half gone, and its still not half bad.

The broad stock market has still not recovered from its 2022 sell off. The Dow, now over 34,000, is still more than 1,000 points below the high set at the beginning of last year. But the bounce from last years lows has been impressive. The S&P 500 is up 14% so far this year. But the aforementioned NASDAQ gets top billing.

Fortune:

The rally in tech megacaps gained further traction, with the Nasdaq 100 notching its best ever first-half of a year and Apple hitting the US$3 trillion milestone.

Nearly US$5 trillion has been added to the value of companies in the Nasdaq 100 since the start of the year, with the tech-heavy gauge defying bubble warnings and jumping almost 40%gains have been even more pronounced when narrowed down to the megacap space which has soared 74%.

In the economy, too, the press sees only pink cheeks and robust health.

Business Insider: Rolling recession turns to rolling expansion, says top Wall Street economist:

stocks could be set to see a 2023 rally continue and broaden out beyond megacap tech shares in the second half of the year, according to a closely followed Wall Street economist.

Look Alive! Beware the French Chaotic Descent "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

History may not always repeat, but it sure does rhyme.

For several years, discontentment among the working class in France has been simmering. It started in mid-November 2018 with the Mouvement des gilets jaunes or The Yellow Vests Movement gathering every weekend in Paris to protest over a newly imposed fuel tax.

This movement grew over time as others joined in voicing their discontentment over socioeconomic policies and the impact of globalism depriving them of individual rights and liberties.

There was a pause in 2020 as the world locked down over the outbreak of the Wuhan virus. However, it resumed afterwards and gained momentum.

In 2021, the French Government sought to exclude those refusing to get vaccinated by denying them the right to dine in a restaurant, enter shopping malls, or even maintain their current occupation.

Defiant French citizens pulled out their picnic rugs and ate in the streets, braving the mid-summer heat. Some barricaded supermarkets that were refusing unvaccinated individuals entry to their premises.

Tensions continued to simmer in 2022 as the French election in April saw the incumbent party retain power, though cutting them down to a minority Government. Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine conflict raged on, leading to energy shortages and inflation ravaging households struggling to make ends meet.

Youd think a fire burning for several years would run out of fuel. Not in the case of the French nationals! Theyve saved their best for 2023.

Earlier this year, the government enacted pension reform, raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. Citizens would have to work for at least 43 years to be eligible for retirement. It was signed into law in mid-April.

As many as 1 million workers came out to protest as the government floated the bill in January, kicking off months of strikes and protests. Many of these demonstrations resulted in violence and destruction of public and private property.

Things might be coming to a head right now. There is news footage of riots across the nation, sparked by the police killing a 17-year-old youth of North African descent in a Parisian suburb.

The many years of neglect, indifference and outright abuse against the people by their rulers are now starting to come home to roost. The country is burning with the rage of a thousand suns.

A warning

This poem is an *IA Writing Competition (fiction category) entry.

A WARNING

in Australia, when the birds hang upside-down
are they really right-side-up?
those larrikins swinging from the washing line
yellow-crested, beady-eyed
brawling on top of the traffic lights
swearing and shitting as people walk by
and screaming in manic delight

in Australia, where the endless white beaches hide
cute cephalopods with googly eyes
who turn violently blue in the blink of an eye

do not put your hands in the water
do not put your fingers under the lid of a wheelie bin
do not leave your shoes out overnight
or you will probably die

in Australia, where for only a very brief time
between the hot and cold seasons
can a human venture safely outside
where even the trees are pyromaniacs by design
filling their arms with gifts for the fire

it is hard to believe that the natural world

needs our delicate care if it is to survive
we must focus our upside-down national pride
on our stubborn ability to stay alive

Human Rights Law Centre joins Whistleblowing International Network "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Human Rights Law Centre has become a member of the Whistleblowing International Network (WIN), the global peak body for whistleblower protection organisations.

The Human Rights Law Centre has a long history advocating for stronger whistleblower protections in Australia, and is recognised as a leading source of policy expertise in the field. In August, the Centre is launching the Whistleblower Project a landmark, Australia-first legal service to protect and empower whistleblowers.

Established in 2018, WIN is the global membership network and information hub for the whistleblower protection community, with members in more than 25 countries. WINs membership includes non-profit organisations that provide access to free legal advice and support to whistleblowers. WINs members share expertise and collaborate with those working to protect whistleblowers.

In early July, WINs membership committee unanimously endorsed the Human Rights Law Centres membership application.

Kieran Pender, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, said:

By exposing human rights abuses, government wrongdoing and corporate misconduct, whistleblowers make Australia a better place. The Human Rights Law Centres Whistleblower Project will enable us to protect and empower whistleblowers and we have benefited immensely from the global expertise of the Whistleblowing International Network in preparing the project.

Anna Myers, Executive Director of the Whistleblowing International Network, said:

Protecting whistleblowers helps ensure the free flow of information for the responsible exercise of authority. Yet global experience has shown that even the best whistleblowing laws on paper do not work in practice without sustained effort from civil society. We are delighted to welcome the Human Rights Law Centre to our membership and are proud to have assisted the Centre in the formation of their Whistleblower Project which will be a huge boost for Australias whistleblowers.

A tyrannical move in France "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The internet is how people communicate now, and social media has become a natural platform for sharing dissent and organising protests. As a result, one of the first things tyrants do when facing mass opposition is shut it down, with blocks on specific platforms, or just a system-wide blackout. We've seen such attacks on the public's right to free expression in places like Iran, Egypt, Myanmar, and India. And now, faced with widespread protests against police murder and institutional racism, Emmanuel Macron is suggesting that France follow suit:

Emmanuel Macron is facing a backlash after threatening to cut off social media networks as a means of stopping the spread of violence during periods of unrest.

lyse officials and government ministers responded on Wednesday by insisting the president was not threatening a general blackout but instead the occasional and temporary suspension of platforms.

The presidents comments came as ministers blamed young people using social media such as Snapchat and TikTok for organising and encouraging rioting and violence after the shooting dead of a teenager during a police traffic stop in a Paris suburb last week.

We need to think about how young people use social networks, in the family, at school, the interdictions there should be and when things get out of hand we may have to regulate them or cut them off, Macron told a meeting of more than 250 mayors, whose municipalities were hit by the violence, on Tuesday.

Because obviously, only "young people" - non-pensioners? - use the internet nowdays...

This is simply not what democracies do. Instead, it is the action of a tyranny. Sadly, it seems like France is following Britain towards authoritarianism. The problem for Macron is that a government which walks away from democracy forfeits its legitimacy; if he behaves like a tyrant, there's no basis for complaint if he suffers a tyrant's fate.

Its only right if it's done by the Right otherwise its just not cricket "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Its only right if it's done by the Right otherwise its just not cricket

For those who move in elite circles, there is really only one rule: its never wrong if its done by the Right.

This rule has been borne out throughout the upper echelons of British society and filtered out to the far corners of its Empire since the beginning of the current and very established class system.

In the colony of Australia, despite the fact that we are still a colony under British rule, we like to think we are egalitarian. And in some ways, at least when compared with the mother country, we are. However, this one rule, or more accurately, belief system, of the Right always being right, has certainly endured.

This week, it was played out in full and vowel-enunciating focus when Australia won the second Ashes test against England. Stay with me as this is interesting, even for a non-cricket fan like me and for most other "right-thinking" people, not because Australia won, which is all very nice, of course, but because the Poms, at least those who belong to the English Establishment, are so affronted with their loss they can hardly contain their indignation and in fact, did not.

In the comical fracas that ensued, the lords at Lords booed their collective lungs out and even tried to trip up the Aussie players back in the Long Room the dining room of the "gentlemen's club" established back in 1737, which didnt even allow women entry until 1998 (its Australian counterpart, the Melbourne Cricket Club, was only 15 years ahead in the gender stakes) but lets not get stumped by the many elitist details.

Even the British Prime Minister has weighed in on the topic. Outraged, PM Suna...

In which - stray readers be warned - the pond eventually explores a paranoid persecution complex, and it's not a pretty sight, more Orwellian petulant than socialist George perceptive ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

What to lead with? What to guess might be top of the lizard Oz this day?

Could it be how Israel knows a lot about collective guilt and collective punishment? Might that not lead to collective hatred and contempt?

Nah, not a likely Oz story. That's been disappeared.

What about some light relief? Sorry, for that the pond must turn to Kate Briquelet's DeSantis, Furries, and Trump Merch: I Went to the Moms for Liberty Summit for a laugh. It's quite a read and would be hugely funny if it wasn't so downright weird and paranoid. Luckily it can be found outside the Beast paywall here

The pond is always hanging out for news of the great furry conspiracy:

...The New Jersey woman chimed in that at a high school just 40 minutes away, teachers have to honor the furries and kids who say theyre cats, and they have to let them bring litter boxes to school. She was referring to the subculture of people who invent alter-egos as anthropomorphized animals and which the GOP has seized on to generate moral panic. (Claims of litter boxes in schools, it should be noted, are widely and repeatedly discredited.)
The North Dakota mother said her sons high school had furries, too. He's taken pictures of them, she said. There was a kid that was wearing a tail and the principal, we talked to him about, you know, the dress code . Like, these are the kids. But they just let him be, let him wear this tail everywhere he went.

It reminded the pond of that ancient Oz film where Miranda Otto thought she was a horse. It turns out that a bunch of deviants had conspired to get behind the scenes, leading to this moment ...

...Late Saturday night, the atheist infiltrators joined me for a debrief at a hotel bar.
One, whom well call Tina, was inspired to attend the summit after she saw the M4L protest lineup. She thought, Someone should be on the inside reporting back on whats going on in there.
Once she arrived, she ran into a registered Republican whom she knew from atheist circles. He asked not to be identified for this article as he mulls running for office and instead preferred the pseudonym Hollingsworth. Sometimes if you can keep your meal down, Hollingsworth said, extremist politics can be entertaining maybe in the same way that a severe accident on the roadway might be
Titillating, Tina offered.
So, how badly am I going to regret this language? Hollingsworth asked me.

Lies, Lies, and the Cause of Autism, Part 1: Wonderful Smackdown by RFK, Jr, on Vaccine Safety "IndyWatch Feed National"

by Mary W Maxwell, LLB

Dear Australians, You may be assuming that a man who is the nephew of the slain JFK and the son of the slain RFK is getting good media coverage in his bid for 2024 presidential nomination.

Wrong.  The MSM are doing their best to make him look stupid and dangerous.  In the above interview, he makes the US government look more stupid and dangerous than we could have imagined.

I have now gone to the two offending websites, HHS and CDC, to fetch for you some material by those two quasi-governmental organizations. (Thats Dept of Health and Human Services, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two wholly unconstitutional.) Kennedy accuses them of lying.

The day on which I retrieved the following statements about the safety of vaccines, and the non-relation of vaccines to autism. is July 4, 2023.  In a fortnight I will re-fetch, to see if he HHS and CDC will bother to back down.

By the way, RFK, Jr has been going at this for 18 years.  His famous interview at Salon.com took place on June 20, 2006. Salon soon scrubbed it, however.

In my 2011 book, Prosecution for Treason, I stated:

The author is David Blackbourn, and the subtitle is A Global History 1500-2000.  The focus is on Germanys global influence abroad and no I dont mean the Battle of Stalingrad, though that era is covered.  Here is one excerpt:

There was global demand for German scientists of every kind.  The Southern Hemisphere offers two striking examples.  One is Latin america, thanks partly to Humboldts legacy.  There were hundreds of Germans scientists in Argentina alone by the early twentieth century, and many others in Chile, Peru, and elsewhere.  German scientists also played an equally outsized role in Australia.  We have already seen the impact made by the botanist Richard Schomburgk and his circle of 49ers in South Australia.  Among the many German scientists who arrived after midcentury and shaped Australias scientific landscape were several who were well connected internationally.  The geophysicist Georg von Neumayer is a perfect specimen of the type.  Neumayer enjoyed support in British scientific circles and was a disciple of the American astronomer and oceanographer Matthew Maury, who had himself been inspired by Humboldt.  In Australia Neumayer established an observatory in Melbourne, before returning to Germany, where he chaired the International Polar Commission in 1879.

Neumayer is a reminder that German remained, as they had been in the era of Forster and Pallas, inveterate scientific travelers.

Recommended, this is quite a good book.

Berejiklian escapes prosecution despite ICAC corruption verdict

The conclusion of the NSW ICAC determined former Premier Gladys Berejiklian had engaged in serious corruption, yet she has escaped criminal charges. Anthony Klan reports.

FORMER NSW PREMIER Gladys Berejiklian has been found to have engaged in serious corrupt conduct after a multi-year probe by the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

In findings released on Thursday 29 June, the ICAC found Berejiklian engaged in serious corrupt conduct in relation to a $5.5 million grant to the Australian Clay Target Association (ACTA) in Wagga Wagga NSW.

It found Berejiklian had engaged in serious corrupt conduct for not reporting her concerns or corrupt conduct, or improper conduct, of former MP Daryl Maguire, who the ICAC also found had engaged in corrupt conduct over a series of private business dealings.

Berejiklian and Maguire had been in a secret relationship from about 2015 to 2020, which Berejiklian had not disclosed, despite presiding over millions of dollars of grants to projects in Maguires then electorate of Wagga Wagga, central NSW.

The ICAC also found Berejiklian had breached the public trust over funding for the Riverina Conservatorium of Music, also in Wagga Wagga.

The ACTA gun club was given a $5.5 million grant for a new clubhouse and function centre despite it failing to meet the required criteria and strong objections from departmental officials after an intervention by Berejiklian.

The ICAC said Maguire had been a strong proponent of both the ACTA project an...

A second McDonnell-Douglas UAP study in the 1970's? - A preliminary article "IndyWatch Feed National"

Introduction

I am continuing my steady re-reading of Jacques Vallee's "Forbidden Science: Volume 5." There are a wealth of interesting little pieces of information to be digested slowly; just like the French food which Vallee frequently refers to in his diary entries.

It is now common knowledge that the McDonnell-Douglas company conducted an in-house study of UAP between 1967-1969. The leader of this internal company study was Robert M. Wood. Wood published a few details of the project in the July/August 1993 issue of the "International UFO Reporter" in an article "A Little Physics....A Little Friction: A Close Encounter with the Condon Committee" and in much more detail in the October 2008 "MUFON Journal" in an article titled "McDonnell Douglas Studied UFOs in 1960's." There are a number of websites where you can read around 275 pages of documentation of this 1967-1969 study. I posted an article about the project and the contents of some of this documentation on 22 September 2020.

A second McDonnell Douglas study in the 70's?

Now, when reading "Forbidden Science: Volume 5" I came across references to what appears to have been a separate, and second McDonnell-Douglas UAP study. Below, I extract a number of sections of Vallee's diary entries, from "Forbidden Science: Volume 2,3 and 5" concerning McDonnell-Douglas.

If we stuff up this one, it could be game over for humanity at worst, or a descent into an anarchic Hobbesian war of all against all, at best. Unfortunately, writes Professor Mark Beeson, no-one seems to have told the worlds plutocrats, who are literally taking conspicuous consumption to new heights.

Virgin Galactic has just inaugurated a form of space tourism that will take three or four passengers for a 90-minute joyride 50 miles above the surface of the Earth, where they can experience weightlessness and enjoy what one assumes is a pretty impressive view. The cost? About $450,000, plus a suitably super-sized contribution to the worlds ever-increasing CO2 emissions, of course.

Back on Planet A things arent much better. On the same day Virgin was entering what can only be called the space space, it was revealed that a microscopic Louis Vuitton bag sold for more than $60,000. The phrase more money than sense comes to mind, but this hardly does justice to the compassionless self-absorption necessary to do this at any time, let alone when so many face existential crises that they risk their lives to escape.

The jarring difference in the worlds response to the deaths of an estimated 600 or so people who drowned recently while trying to cross from Libya to Italy on an overcrowded 30-meter fishing vessel, and the five explorers who died on a sight-seeing trip to the wreck of the Titanic, is another telling illustration of lifes enduring inequities on Planet A.

The Titan, which was recently destroyed on a trip to visit the wreck of the Titanic.

Whatever your view of Titanic tourism, the reality is that not many of us have the necessary $300,000 odd to pay for the ticket even if we wanted to. The us in this case, of course, is the relatively wealthy population of the north, the developed world, or wha...

Okay We Get It. The Poms Are Whingers, Aussies Are Cheaters. In Other News. "IndyWatch Feed National"

Before we head off down that path again you know, the one where we all wake up a week from now with ranters regret after engaging in lengthy debates about things that mean absolutely nothing maybe we all should stop, take a breath, and ponder whether cricket is really that important after all, writes Chris Graham.

Last week, Australia was transfixed with the story of a missing submersible containing a rich buffoon and four unfortunate passengers, who were drifting around the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean trying to catch a glimpse of the Titanic.

Alas, their dodgy craft imploded before it could be located and pulled from the water by an armada of planes and ships, who were apparently far less interested in the sinking of a boat in the Mediterranean which claimed the lives of hundreds of asylum seekers.

Now this week, we have the Ashes scandal, or Stump-gate as media have inevitably taken to calling it. You have to wonder just how much fluff a nation can embrace.

This is, Im told, a sporting tale of extreme importance. National importance, even. One which involves a man in silly white pants rolling a red ball at a set of stumps, while another man in silly white pants walks a few feet away from the stumps when he really shouldnt have. Apparently, that was because another man (in black pants with a silly white hat) had not yet said the word Over, thus he was subsequently forced to raise one finger into the air and instead proclaim the word Out.

All of which sparked an international incident. Or in cricketing parlance, a Pom walked out of his crease and was run out by the wicketkeeper.

Thankfully, this bizarre but thoroughly fascinating and crucially important debate can be resolved in two simple paragraphs.

Paragraph one: Generally speaking, England is crap at sport, especially any sport they claim to have invented, especially cricket. Thus, more often than not they lose to Australia. So its not at all surprising theyre crying foul now, even though what happened was common-place, entirely within the rule...

AFTINET joins civil society in calling for the release of IPEF pillar 2 agreement and current texts "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

July 5, 2023: The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) is a new regional forum initiated by the US  that proponents say will strengthen economic cooperation between its 14 participants and divert supply chains away from China. IPEF, unlike traditional trade agreements, does not include market access commitments like lower tariffs. Instead, the main incentives are increased investment and capacity building projects (you can read more about the 'Four Pillars' negotiating objectives of IPEF here).

IPEF recently announced the substantial conclusion of negotiations for pillar 2, which aims to increase the resilience and sustainability of supply chains amongst the 14 members, following a Ministers meeting in Detroit in May. However, the text of the agreement has not been released and civil society is now calling for greater transparency from trade ministers ahead of the next round of IPEF negotiations from July 8 in Busan, South Korea.

IPEF is being promoted as a new model of trade arrangements with greater consultation with civil society. Yet the secrecy of the text means that civil society is unable to assess the agreement or ensure those benefits are real, and not a repeat of the trade agreements designed to benefit powerful states and transnational corporations.

By failing to release the texts and ensure the transparency of negotiations, IPEF negotiators not only deny the public and civil society meaningful input to ensure that the self-defined IPEF outcomes of fairness, collaboration and inclusivity are met, but also risk repeating the problematic approaches to free trade agreements that has led to their deep unpopularity.

AFTINET has joined with 16 civil society groups from IPEF countries in signing a letter to leaders and ministers participating in the IPEF negotiations in Busan to release the Pillar 2 agreement and other negotiating texts. You can read the full letter here.

Which NSW councils need ward redistributions? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Prior to the 2021 NSW council elections, I analysed the population trends in another of Sydney councils which have been shouldering the bulk of Sydneys population growth. I wrote about Camden, Blacktown, a number of other councils, and an overall post.

Now as we get closer to the September 2024 elections, I have started paying attention to which NSW councils might be redrawing their ward boundaries.

Unfortunately there is no central record of the redistribution process, unlike in Victoria and Queensland. Each council handles redistributions through their regular decision-making process, usually involving a round of public consultation.

There are still some rules that apply to this process. Councils must make a final decision by 5 October 2023. Wards in New South Wales must elect the same number of councillors across a council area, and must be drawn so no ward varies from any other ward by more than 10% of enrolment. This process cant change the structure of the council the number of wards and number of councillors can only be changed with a referendum.

Some councils are obliged to redraw their ward boundaries, if wards deviated by each other by more than 10% over a specified time period. Councils can also choose to redraw outside of this situation, but this deviation obliges a council to make a change.

Its worth noting that I originally interpreted the legislation as requiring wards to fall within 10% of the average enrolment, which would have been much less strict in terms of forcing redistributions. Once realising this I had to re-run my calculations and update this blog post.

In todays post, Ill be looking at enrolment data to identify councils which are obliged to redraw their map, and those that have narrowly escaped.

When I was first looking into this issue, I downloaded the latest enrolment data for the 48 councils in the state which used wards in 2021 (at the time they were April 2023 data) to look for wards that were 10% higher than other wards in their council. But when I read the legislation, I realised that the trigger is based on a much earlier point in time.

Section 211 of the Local Government Act requires a redistribution if the council becomes aware that a ward deviates by more than 10% during a councils term of office, and if that difference remains at the end of the first year of the following term.

This means that a deviation would only force a redistribution if it had appeared during the previous council term. If a new deviation was to appear now, it would only trigger a redistri...

Reserve Bank has gone mad "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Reserve Bank has gone mad

The successive rises in the cash rate to March 2023 by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) leave one doubting the intelligence of its Governor, Philip Lowe, and his senior staff.

The further rise in the cash rate to 3.85% on 2 May 2023 confirms ones doubts.

The cash rate began its most recent descent in November 2011, lowered from 4.75% to 4.50%. The rate was pushed down successively to 0.10% in November 2020, where it stayed until May 2022. In March 2021, Lowe claimed that the cash rate would stay low for another three years to 2024. The rate was then raised during ten successive months to 3.60% in March 2023. Many would-be mortgagors apparently took Lowe at this word.

Philip Lowe speaks like an automaton, delivering the conventional wisdom in myriad re-phrasings but which remain opaque. Yet Lowe is earning over $1 million a year (the U.S. Feds Jerome Powells salary is around US$200,000 (AU$295,842)). His deputies are on a good earner as well. Salaries are supposedly set to acquire and reward expertise.

Moreover, the formal reason for affording central banks independence is that the detached expertise of central bankers must be given free rein for analysis and implementation without the interference of ill-informed and opportunistic politicians. But where is the expertise?

The RBA employs over 1,300 staff, a huge total and growing over the last decade. Why are so many formally well-educated brains not filtering intelligence to the peak of the pyramid?

Lowe has a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the very to...

Saltbushes Bloom As Our Next Big El Nino Lurks "IndyWatch Feed National"

Sheep and cattle farmers across Australias south east have begun planting an elite variety of Old Man Saltbush this winter, to supplement feed during dryer conditions in anticipation of a potential El Nino predicted to cause widespread droughts in Australia in the coming years.

Anameka Saltbush is a specially selected variety of the drought-tolerant native shrub, developed over 15 years by the CSIRO, with partners in government and industry. Its unique for its higher nutritional value and improved palatability for livestock and its potential to regenerate the topsoil of land that is too saline or infertile. Its fast-growing, and occurs naturally in WA, SA, NT, Vic, NSW and Queensland.

Saltbush is generally not the first choice of feed for livestock, but its a genuine supplement when pastures have dried up. Even humans can eat it the seeds and leaves of Old Man Saltbush have long been a staple in bush tucker circles. It can be used like a leafy vegetable or salad, blanched or sauted, wrapped around meat or fish, or used as a stuffing for poultry. You can even dry it, for use as an herb. It has, as you might expect, a salty flavour, and is rich in protein, antioxidants and minerals.

Dr Hayley Norman selected Anameka Saltbush from 60,000 plants. (IMAGE: Damien Smith Photography, Supplied)

CSIRO agricultural scientist, Dr Hayley Norman, says that during dry years when there is a shortage of available feed, Anameka saltbush can provide key nutrients that improve livestock productivity and health.

Anameka Saltbush is a moderate-energy, high crude protein and sulphur feed source that is full of essential minerals and antioxidants, Dr Norman said. It grows well on most landscapes, and once established, Anameka Saltbush can become a living haystack for grazing livestock for more than 20 years if managed correctly.

CSIROs Drought Resilience Mission is driving wider adoption of Anameka Saltbush in drought-prone regions across southeast A...

In which the pond is triggered, and takes some time to get around to "Ned", some two party ningnong and the bromancer's war with China ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Apropos of a note regarding the pond's work not yet being done, yesterday the pond visited the RPA and was shocked and disturbed to discover everyone was still required to wear masks on entry ...

To what avail? And another thing, when will the medical profession get over this bizarre fetish for wearing masks during operating procedures? Where's the harm if a few germs drop on an open wound?

Everyone knows that the efficacy of masks is disputed on almost a daily basis in the lizard Oz as an idle superstition.

Sure doctors waste time spending seven years or more studying medicine and doing internships and maybe 24-7 service in an emergency ward, but a little learning is a dangerous thing. There's nothing they couldn't learn by dropping in on a Joe Rogan podcast for five minutes or spending ten listening to the deepest thoughts of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (They might even discover mass shootings are linked to prescription drugs and that vaccines can cause autism and assorted other conspiracy theories).

Oh they'll quibble and cavil, as if they know anything. When in doubt regarding your medical knowledge, trust an environmental lawyer. Better still, trust Killer Creighton or the Caterist, with a deep medical understanding honed over years of writing columns. Weigh up a third rate sociology degree against wasted time at university studying medicine, and there's only one conclusion. Better still, Killer has degrees in economics, so he's entirely suited to explaining how masks are a very expensive con job. He's full of sage advice.

Another thing: the pond is convinced that mask-wearing is somehow related to the prevalence of assorted tough-to-fight staph forms in hospitals. Settle. Of course the pond has no evidence, but isn't that the scientific way? Advance a theory, just ask questions, and soon enough the proof will come along. Or not, as the case may be, but what fun asking the questions.

Sorry, that little outburst came from the pond being made to wear a mask, going against years of reptile warnings. Sure it kept the face warm on a cold day, but it also fogged the pond's glasses, and that might have led to a fatal injury, not to mention the harm done by fatal ingestion of carbon dioxide, which is good for the planet and plants, but can be tricky for the metabolism.

What else triggered the pond at the start of this day? Well the pond took a look at the top of the lizard Oz digital page and threw a hissy fit and decided its work was pretty much baked to the point of burning ...

Top tech trends to boost your business "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Top tech trends to boost your business

Key areas in which companies can succeed in the digital business world have been identified by a leading tech firm, writes Paul Budde.

TECH CONSULTING FIRM Gartner's identified trends for cloud, data centre and edge infrastructure in 2023 underline the importance of optimising existing infrastructure, embracing new architectures, adopting cloud principles on-premises, and prioritising sustainability. By staying abreast of these trends and effectively navigating economic and geopolitical challenges, organisations can position themselves for success in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Optimisation and refactoring of cloud infrastructure

Gartner emphasises the need for organisations to revisit their cloud infrastructure in 2023. Many companies hastily assembled or poorly architected their cloud infrastructure in the past, resulting in inefficiencies and increased costs.

This year presents an opportunity to optimise and refactor existing cloud infrastructure to enhance efficiency, resilience, and cost-effectiveness. The focus should be on eliminating redundancy, overbuilt or unused infrastructure, building business resilience, mitigating supply chain disruptions, and modernising infrastructure.

Embracing new application architectures

As new application architectures emerge, organisations will need to consider alternative infrastructure options. Gartner suggests that non-x86 architectures, such as Advanced RISC Machines (A.R.M.)-based processors, will be in demand for specialised workloads. A.R.M.-based processors are gaining popularity due to their energy-efficient nature, particularly in the mobile device industry.

By adopting alternative architectures, organisations can harness energy efficiency and optimise their infrastructure for specific workload requirements.

Adoption of cloud principles on-premises

Data centre teams will increasingly adopt cloud principles on-premises to deliver more agil...

Chris Hedges: They lied about Afghanistan. They lied about Iraq. And they are lying about Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed National"

Chris Hedges, American war correspondent, investigative journalist, and winner of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, has created a storm for his revelations about the war in Ukraine. In this article (Scheerpost 2 July 2023), Hedges writes about the lies and misrepresentation used by Washington to prosecute wars in the past are being used over Ukraine. This is another war to serve US interests. The armaments industry, serviced by the pimps of war.

The playbook the pimps of war use to lure us into one military fiasco after another, including Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and now Ukraine, does not change. Freedom and democracy are threatened. Evil must be vanquished. Human rights must be protected. The fate of Europe and NATO, along with a rules based international order is at stake. Victory is assured.

The Ukraine flag is the present mascot to cover the lies for justifying war

The results are also the same. The justifications and narratives are exposed as lies. The cheery prognosis is false. Those on whose behalf we are supposedly fighting are as venal as those we are fighting against.

Die Debatte um Sicherheitsgarantien "IndyWatch Feed National"

Russland demilitarisieren

The Pacific Engagement Visa needs to be delivered "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Labors announcement that it would introduce a Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV) to provide Pacific Island citizens with 3,000 permanent resident visas annually has been warmly welcomed in the region. Good progress was made with the new visa, with crucial details released at the start of the year, but it is now clear that the target starting date of 1 July has been missed.

The legislation to enable the PEV passed through the House of Representatives in March, and was tabled for consideration in the Senate in June. However, it never made it to the Senate floor.

While all parties have expressed support for the PEV in principle, the sticking point has become the lottery behind the visa. Labor has modelled the PEV on equivalent New Zealand lottery-based Pacific visas (the Samoa Quota and Pacific Access Category visas). The Coalition has opposed the introduction of a lottery into Australias migration system, meaning that the prospects for the actual introduction of the PEV are now in the hands of the Senate crossbench.

The Greens and the Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN) have indicated their support for the PEV. The Greens have proposed (in the report of the Senate committee established to scrutinise the bill) an amendment explicitly limiting the lottery to the PEV, and the JLN has proposed a motion supporting the PEV but also indicating support for developing permanent pathways for temporary Pacific workers. Both proposals seem reasonable, meaning that the government should have the numbers to pass the PEV enabling legislation. If so, then it must just have been a matter of a crowded legislative agenda that prevented this legislation being passed in June, and the PEV legislation should be tabled and passed when the Senate next meets at the end of July.

We certainly hope so. Having raised the expectations of the Pacific, and of Australias Pacific diasporas, it would be not only tragic but deeply damaging for Australias reputation were it now to walk away from the PEV.

The best scenario would be passage with bipartisan support. The Opposition has indicated that they support the PEV in principle, but not the lottery. They have instead called for PEV eligibility to be restricted to temporary Pacific migrants in Aus...

Down Under High: Australia Is the First Country To Use MDMA and Psilocybin To Treat Severe Psychiatric Conditions "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Lately, it has become difficult to detect exactly where the cure ends and where the poison begins. The rationale behind many decisions in Big Pharma and regulatory agencies around the world is getting increasingly difficult to support.

Ecstasy and Magic Mushrooms for psychologically unstable people? Sure, why not? What could possibly go wrong? Sounds like a joke, but now its a reality in Australia.

Sputnik reported:

Australias controversial move to become the worlds first country to allow the clinical prescription of MDMA, better known as part of the drug ecstasy, and psilocybin the main ingredient in magic mushrooms for a raft of psychiatric conditions has left many clinicians and researchers concerned.

The therapy would provide an options for people with mental illnesses  not responding to other treatments. Some hail it as a game changer, but others fear that the was decision rushed.

3,4-Methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy, and psilocybin are both Schedule 9 (prohibited substances) in Australia. The drugs in question are still being tested in clinical trials.

The decision to approve their being prescribed for the treatments in question is very early as compared with the usual process of developing and rolling out new treatments, clinical psychiatrist Dr. Colleen Loo, a professor of psychiatry at the University of New South Wales [] in Sydney told the media.

There is also no data on the long-term results of the treatments, or about how permanent are the promising positive effects.

Professor Richard Bryant, School of Psychology, University of NSW: The science is at a point where we can say it is too early to be prescribing MDMA for PTSD patients. Instead, we should be investing in research to understand how MDMA can be used in relation to proven treatments.

The cost of psychedelic-assisted therapy is estimated to be around $25,000.

The new regulations allows approved psychiatrists to prescribe MDMA for post-traumat...

Listings remain low

Property for sale remained relatively tight across each of the major capital cities, and significantly lower than a year earlier in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.

GBR Snorkelling tours for adults "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Probably been asked a bunch of times but just want to know what the best snorkelling tour is from Cairns (we will be staying at Trinity Beach, but also willing to travel and do the tour from Port Douglas). I've had a look online and quite frankly all the different options are overwhelming.

A few things to factor in: - We don't have a budget (happy to spend $$$ for the best experience) - we are not divers and only interested in snorkelling - would prefer a smaller group so it's more personalised and hopefully not too many small kids

-i'm going with my dad so not interested in romantic tours etc - will be going in mid to late August

IAEA hypocrisy, and the little Fukushima nuclear radiation mill "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Do you remember the old Norwegian folk story? In this, the little salt mill is thrown into the sea, because it wont stop producing salt. Thats why the sea is salty.

Well, the not-so-little damaged Fukushima nuclear reactor will soon be releasing radioactively-contaminated water (equivalent in volume to about 500 Olympic-size swimming pools) into the sea and thats just the start.

The International Atomic Energy Agencys Director General Rafael Grossi will visit Japan from Tuesday to deliver a final report on the safety of the process.

That is just a formality. Despite the perilous situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Rafael Grossi and the rest of the well-paid IAEA troop, and Japans political big-wigs, and TEPCO -all are happy to release irradiated water ad infinitum into the worlds oceans.

This really should be a wake-up call for the world. The International Atomic Energy Agency doesnt give a damn about your health, your childrens health, your grandchildrens health, your great-grandchildrens health and so on ad infinitum.

The religious belief that nuclear reactors, and especially small nuclear reactors will save the world from global heating that is a load of codswallop, and the IAEA knows this.

There are safer alternatives for dealing with the Fukushima nuclear wastewater, and with wastes from other nuclear reactors.

This permission from the ultimate authority whose real job is saving the nuclear industry, this permission should be a wake-up call to the world.

Sinking billions: undergunned and overpriced "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Missing records, billions in over-runs, conflicts of interest, and flawed ships. How the Defence Departments new frigates project is a boondoggle for a British weapons-maker.

MICHELLE FAHY, JUL 3, 2023,  https://undueinfluence.substack.com/p/sinking-billions-undergunned-and?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=297295&post_id=132705738&isFreemail=true&utm_medium=email

Part one of a two-part series.

In this two-part investigation, Declassified Australia examines the flawed contracting process that led to a $46 billion naval ship-building deal that has been found to be suffering what an investigative audit described as corruption vulnerabilities.

The company at the centre of the scandal, UK arms giant BAE Systems, is revealed to have lied to Australias Defence Department about the planned ships design.

Crucial departmental records of key decision-making meetings have gone missing, while no overall assessment of whether the selected BAE design was value for money was ever made.

The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) reported in May its findings on the multi-billion dollar contract Australia signed in December 2018 with BAE Systems to build nine Hunter-class frigates.

The ANAO found that BAE had overstated bureaucratic language for lied the level of development of the frigates design, which meant cost inflation and schedule slippage were severely under-estimated.

BAE exaggerated the maturity of its design to get around a key government objective requiring the ship to be based on an existing military-off-the-shelf design with a minimum level of change.

Defence selected the BAE Systems frigate even though the two other ships on its shortlist were considered the two most viable designs.

Business as usual

Conflicts of interest, secret consulting deals, and revolving door appointments all undermine democracy, yet this is business-as-usual at the Defence Department, the nations biggest procurement agency.

Former senior BAE executives have been placed at the heart of Australias naval procurement. They have helped write government shipbuilding policy, overseen the navys largest tende...

Chris Hedges: They Lied About Afghanistan. They Lied About Iraq. And They Are Lying About Ukraine. "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

The U.S. public has been conned, once again, into pouring billions into another endless war.

The results are also the same. The justifications and narratives are exposed as lies. The cheery prognosis is false. Those on whose behalf we are supposedly fighting are as venal as those we are fighting against.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a war crime, although one that was provoked by NATO expansion and by the United States backing of the 2014 Maidan coup which ousted the democratically elected Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Yanukovych wanted economic integration with the European Union, but not at the expense of economic and political ties with Russia. The war will only be solved through negotiations that allow ethnic Russians in Ukraine to have autonomy and Moscows protection, as well as Ukrainian neutrality, which means the country cannot join NATO. The longer these negotiations are delayed the more Ukrainians will suffer and die. Their cities and infrastructure will continue to be pounded into rubble.

But this proxy war in Ukraine is designed to serve U.S. interests. It enriches the weapons manufacturers, weakens the Russian military and isolates Russia from Europe. What happens to Ukraine is irrelevant.

First, equipping our friends on the front lines to defend themselves is a far cheaper way in both dollars and American lives to degrade Russias ability to threaten the United States, admitted Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

Second, Ukraines effective defense of its territory is teaching us lessons about how to improve the defenses of partners who are threatened by China. It is no surprise that senior officials from Taiwan are so supportive of efforts to help U...

American, Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians gather in Vienna to call for peace "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

By Medea Benjamin, https://beyondnuclearinternational.org/2023/07/02/coming-together-for-peace/

During the weekend of June 10-11 in Vienna, Austria, over 300 people representing peace organizations from 32 countries came together for the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine to demand an end to the fighting. In a formal conference declaration, participants declared, We are a broad and politically diverse coalition that represents peace movements and civil society. We are firmly united in our belief that war is a crime against humanity and there is no military solution to the current crisis.

To amplify their call for a ceasefire, Summit participants committed themselves to organizing Global Weeks of Actionprotests, street vigils and political lobbyingduring the days of September 30-October 8.

Summit organizers chose Austria as the location of the peace conference because Austria is one of only a few neutral non-NATO states left in Europe. Ireland, Switzerland and Malta are a mere handful of neutral European states, now that previously neutral states Finland has joined NATO and Sweden is next in line. Austrias capital, Vienna, is known as UN City, and is also home to the Secretariat of the OSCE (the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), which monitored the ceasefire in the Donbas from the signing of the Minsk II agreement in 2015 until the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Surprisingly, neutral Austria turned out to be quite hostile to the Peace Summit. The union federation caved in to pressure from the Ukrainian Ambassador to Austria and other detractors, who smeared the events as a fifth column for the Russian invaders. The ambassador had objected to some of the speakers, including world-renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs and European Union Parliament member Clare Daly.

Even the press club, where the final press conference was scheduled, was canceled at the last minute. The Austrian liberal/left newspaper Der Standard piled on, panning the conference both beforehand, during and afterwards, alleging that the speakers were too pro-Russian. Undaunted, local organizers quickly found other locations. The conference took place in a lovely concert center, and the press conference in a local cafe.

The most moving panel of the conference was the one with representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, who risked...

ATO urges patience with tax returns "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

As the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) gears up for tax time, they are urging taxpayers not to rush their annual income return.

Early lodgement without complete information may lead to processing delays and follow-up question from the ATO.

ATO Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh advises waiting until late July when pre-filled information becomes available to ensure a smoother and more accurate tax return process.

Harry Liang partner from Captune Partners says tax returns in Australia are anticipated to be smaller or fewer compared to the previous year, as per the expectations of the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

People know whats going on but vaccine pushers arent giving up "IndyWatch Feed National"

I do not think that they dare back off even when the science is comletely clear.  It was a fraud program top to bottom with actual scvience been hijacked out of any informed debate.  Those that knew better were at best shouted down and never given a podium.

It is exactly like been forced into an exam and having to answer a question affirming the flat earth idea.

Truth is, if they quit, they will hang and it is telling just how many wiser voices did step out of the way.

I do think that present noise is about reconditioning the market to suppress blowback over the Covid scam.  I wonder if they were expecting an accelerating death rate by now?

Dutton's defence of Berejiklian oozes Liberal contempt for women

Just when you thought the Liberals might be running out of new ways to demean women, along comes Opposition Leader Peter Dutton with his defence of disgraced former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Berejiklian was last week found by the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) to have engaged in serious corrupt conduct. This included failing to disclose her close personal relationship with former disgraced Liberal MP for Wagga, Daryl Maguire, and failing to report her knowledge of his involvement in corrupt dealings.

Dutton found himself caught between a rock and a hard place on the Berejiklian matter. He couldnt accept the ICAC findings without raising the spectre of pork barrelling by the previous Federal Government, for example, the sports rorts fiasco, the regional rorts, the pool rorts and the road rorts. As Ms Berejiklian herself observed  everybody rorts. Its not illegal, however, it is corrupt.

Dutton launched a novel defence of Berejiklians actions. Shed fallen in love with a dud, he declared. Shes not corrupt she just made a...

Australian King Parrots feeding in mistletoe, Newstead, 30th June 2023

While a common sight in forested areas along the east coast of the continent it is rarely seen west of Melbourne the Dandenong Ranges are a stronghold.

In recent times there have been some records from Castlemaine and Daylesford areas, but none to my knowledge around Newstead. Ive not recorded the species in my time in the district.

This pair (possibly a female and juvenile) were sighted by Catherine Noone, a local resident and experienced birder, feeding in mistletoe near Rotunda Park on 30th June. They were observed later feeding in a conifer.

Id be keen to learn of any other local observations.

Race Riots and Culture Wars "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

What was it like?

What?

Parisduring the riots.

Were there riots?

Every country has its railroad tracks. And some people are inevitably on the other side of them. In Paris, poor people tend to live in the suburbs. One of them got killed by police last week. Those of us in the centre of town barely noticed.

Nationwide, the French seem to be having their own George Floyd moment.

Heres CNN:

Chaos, destruction and confrontations have led to curfews in some towns around the capital. Bus and tram services faced disruptions with a nationwide shutdown ordered for 9:00pm on Friday to try to stem another night of violence.

Areas within some of Frances major cities have erupted in violence for several successive nights after a teenager named Nahel Merzouk, reportedly of Algerian descent, was fatally shot by police  an incident caught on video.

More than 800 people were arrested the night of 29 June, as outrage continued to intensify. Merzouks death appears to have become a flashpoint for anger about racial inequality in France and claims of police discrimination.

Culture warriors

Meanwhile, racism is a big deal in the US too. There is a whole brigade of culture warriors ready to call it outstamp it outand duke it out. They see racism everywhere.

The Daily Beast: White Professor Disgusts Women Historians Conference:

A conference for female historians this weekend was plunged into turmoil when a prominent white academic speaking at the main event said her professional life would have been easier if she were black.

She was immediately called out for her blatantly racist remarks, and refused to apologise, let alone listen, to the reason why her remarks were horrifyingly wrong

And heres another click-baiting headline from something called BuzzLoving:

White men are a danger to society, says a member of San Franciscos reparations committee.

This past weekend, the US press reeled and railed over the Supreme Courts latest decision on universities race-based admissions programs. In brief, the court recognised that you cant discriminate in favour of one group (blacks, for example) without discriminating against another (Asians, for instance).

This anti-racist decision was immediately attacked asyesracism!

Fox News:

Jemele Hill accuses Asians of carrying the water for white supremacy for backing affirmative action decision.

Harvard pledged to go forth and sin no moreat least not openly. It said, however, that it would continue to take other circumstances, beyond test scores and academic achievements, into account.

How Do You Hold onto a Bird in the Hand? "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

One of the best pieces of advice I received early in my financial advisory career came from a seasoned investment professional.

His words still ring in my ears

Vern, whenever you hear this five-word preface you cant go wrong buying, thats the moment when everything can go wrong.

Why?

Because once every man and his dog thinks something is a sure bet, cant fail, one-way trip to assured wealth, it means that all risk has been discounted out of the investment equationand thats when an investment contains its most risk.

The only thing thats guaranteed in this business is there are no guarantees.

There are two components to an investmentincome and capital gain.

Neither is assured.

For example, in April 2020, during the COVID meltdown, APRA Chairman, Wayne Byres, penned a letter to the banks, stating:

APRA expects ADIs [Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions] and insurers to limit discretionary capital distributions in the months ahead, to ensure that they instead use buffers and maintain capacity to continue to lend and underwrite insurance

As reported by IG Capital at the time

In response to APRAs letter; Macquarie analysts today said that the big four banks may be forced to either reduce or suspend their next wave of dividends completely.

Looking at a stressed scenario; Macquarie posits that bank losses could run as high as $2527 billion per bank. In this possible world, the banks ability to pay dividends (without raising equity) materially diminishes, it was noted.

Recent history has taught us that other sources of income are not set in stone either.

In 2010, with the RBA cash rate around 5%, who would ever have thought a decade later, money in the bank would earn next-to-nothing?

Who could have anticipated how work-from-home would upset the commercial property applecart?

With higher vacancy levels, per-square-metre rent rates have come under pressure.
Landlords have suffered a double whammyfalling rental income and lower property values.

Nothing is ever absolutely guaranteed

Things happen that can change market dynamics.

And what was once placed in the category of you cant go wrong buying, suddenly shifts to how did we get this so wrong?

Of the two types of investment returns, income is perceived as the bird in the hand, while growth is the two in the bush.

So, how do you increase the odds of holding onto that bird in your hand?

With the guidance of someone who has been there and done that.

This is an unashamed plug for my good mate, Greg Canavan

Ive been in this business for 37 years and have seen a lot of investment professionals.....

Locals with type-2 diabetes invited to take part in new Olive Leaf extract trial "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Researchers are looking for locals to take part in the trial  seeking adults living in the Northern Rivers with a diagnosis of type-2 diabetes, who have lived with diabetes for more than 12 months and are not receiving insulin therapy.

Participants will be required to take OLE or placebo capsules once a day for 24 weeks, and to attend Southern Cross Universitys Lismore campus on three separate occasions.

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterised by poor blood glucose control which, left unchecked, can contribute to serious complications. However, it is estimated that only one-half of people with diabetes are able to maintain their target blood glucose ranges.

Lead researcher Associate Professor Matthew Leach from Southern Cross Universitys National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine said that Olive Leaf Extract presented a relatively safe and low-cost treatment option for those who cannot maintain good blood glucose control.

There are a significant number of people who do not maintain good blood glucose control. This can be for many reasons such as limited access to suitable treatments an...

Recognised experts agree on that the Australian economy is in trouble "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Joe Montero

The latest survey by the Conversation should be of interest to everyone. It involved contributions from of leading forecasters in 25 Australian universities, thinktanks and financial institutions among them economic modellers, former Treasury, International Monetary Fund and Reserve Bank officials, and a former member of the Reserve Bank board.

It is the unified view of the state of the Australian economy hat is the most noteworthy part. In short, the probability of a recession high.

The focus of the universities, think tanks, financial institutions, and the rest is on inflation and interest rates. No surprise here. Everyone knows they are a problem. We are all feel the impact on our lives.

But the forecast of a probable recession is about much more. It means a recognition that the economy is not growing and may even be shrinking. Predictions are that even if there is a small growth, it will be less than the increase in population.

Consideration should be given to the reality that official statistics are not accurate and tend to underestimate what is really going on. The reasons are that the methods used tend to be those that paint the best picture for the government.

Take inflation. A price index is used. It contains a basket of essential items for a household and their prices. What is included and whatever weight is given to each of these items matters. The cost of housing is underestimated, and high tech items like computers, mobile phones are excluded. These are just two examples that indicate the Index underestimates the real rate of inflation.

Economic growth is generally measured either by means of the money value of sales. This is called gross Domestic Product (GPD). But there is a problem with this. Financial transactions are considered parts of growth, when all they are is changing ownership of what already exists. There are also certain costs, like those resulting from environmental and social damage that arent included.

If these factors are brought into the calculation, the GDP measurement would show less economic growth.

This gives us a clue as to what is really going on. Finance in proportion to the rest of the economy has become far too big, and the largest part of this takes the form of debt. In turn, this debt takes two forms. Debt used to finance business and household debt.

When the first...

POEM: An Ode to Senator Thorpe "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

POEM: An Ode to Senator Thorpe

This poem is an *IA Writing Competition (fiction category) entry.

AN ODE TO SENATOR THORPE

It's a new generation and pronouns are the rage
Plus a new batch of pollies have taken the stage
Of all of them though, there is who stands out
And it's Senator Thorpe, without a shadow of doubt.

On the coattails of the Greens, she came by Harley to town
Championing minorities and sticking it to the Crown
Some people are asking, Is she barking mad?
In fairness, it was Bolt and Sky News who elected to give a platform to her dad.

Now widely criticised for making a fuss
But imagine your own father throwing you under the bus!
Evicted from a strip club with verbal abuse her great crime
Some may just argue she's ahead of her time.

But how was Barnaby Joyce, commenting with presumption
About someone else's alcoholic consumption!
Man-handled by police  I've been there myself
If politics was about realness, she'd be top shelf.

Everyone seems to have had a go at ripping her down
But she's not one to mess with how about that Van clown?
On the Parliament's stage, she told Pauline where to go
But there are just so few who haven't wanted to, though.

To their discredit, no sisters have paused the great goad
Easier to paint her crazy it serves their cause so
Condemned by so many and told to go take a hike
In fairness, with chance, I'd ride a great Martin bike!

Neither poised nor polished, but should she need be?
A woman after my own heart you get what you see
She is not fit for parliament, says Van like white Sir
Or could it be the great halls, aren't ready for her?

Running scared and desperate to stop her calling them out
Perhaps running scared of the fact she is gaining some clout
Who would actually write this, I hear the hacks say
It's not even fiction  burn the rulebook, she'd say.

A controversial poem, perhaps, but let it be known
Senator Thorpe  this is an ode
Let all young girls take a sip from her cup
If only we were all a bit more Lidia as we grew up.

FixedIt: Rape is not a date "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Cairns Post is back after erasing an alleged violent rape and replacing it with date goes horribly wrong.

The date went wrong? Really? Thats how they choose to describe 21 charges of rape, sexual assault, physical assault, robbery, and enter with intent?

A date goes wrong when youre wearing white jeans and you sit in a puddle of spilled coffee. A date goes wrong when your date tips soup in your lap or sneers at Swifties or brings their parents with them.

Rape, assault and robbery charges are not a date, theyre crimes to be tried in court.

Erasing an alleged rape like this is not an accident or a mistake. Its a choice. That choice tells me a lot about the person who wrote it and they audience they think theyre writing for.

An unfinished political obituary for Stuart Robert, a flat circle

Some politicians rise and fall. The scandals of others are simply never done.

As the explosive Synergy 360 controversy shows, one can never truly take comfort in the idea the worst has already come to pass with Stuart Robert.

The man is a flat circle, evangelically unburdened by the weight and sting of conscience. His ensuing and almost preternatural ability to spread scandal thin and wide is not unlike that of a toxic weed: the scandal lingers for years, defacing the trust that sits at the heart of our democracy.

But absent a full panorama of Roberts 15-year scandal-distinguished political career, it would be too easy to cast doubt on or downplay the significance of his legacy.

After all, he belonged to a government marked by unrivalled and unconcealed contempt for those conventions designed to ensure propriety where lies were habitually brandished against not just facts but reality itself, government made...

For over 30 years now, everything weve tried has failed to even slow the juggernaut of runaway economic growth thats driving climate collapse.

Since the Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero in 1992, where the leaders of the world pledged, hand-on-heart, to drastically reduce the use of Fossil Fuels, we have burnt more than all the rest of history put together!

In 1990 fossil fuels were 87% of global energy use. By 2022 that had dropped to 83%.

A mere 4% in 30 years, despite an enormous increase in renewables. Thats because world GDP has increased a massive 4 fold since 1990.

Up from $25trillion to $100trillion.

By 2030 our GDP is expected to double again!

Every dollar we make also makes around 700gms of

CO2 emissions, on average.

Thats a staggering 70 tons per person per year for every soul that calls this planet home.

(not including Elon Musk. He is moving to Mars)

So all the gains we make in renewables are wiped out by the gains in GDP. We are chasing our tails!

Paradoxically, if we double our efforts to make renewables, ever dollar we spend doing that would produce 600gms of CO2 emissions. All that CO2 pumped into the skywould take us over the tipping points that we are already on the verge of reaching.

So, we could find ourselves achieving Zero Net Emissions, but living in a world or run-away global heating. Ironic isnt it?

Rain doesnt stop NAIDOC Celebration Walk in Ballina "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

All smiles after 2023 NAIDOC Celebration Walk in Ballina. Photo David Lowe.

Yesterday morning saw the temporary closure of River Street in Ballina for the annual NAIDOC Week Celebration Walk. The theme of NAIDOC this year is For Our Elders.

Despite the rain, which grew heavier, hundreds of people walked from the park near the RSL Club to the Visitors Centre, for a flag-raising and short ceremony, before morning tea and a BBQ. The route took the reverse direction of the ANZAC March, and had some parallels with that event, including the mixture of joy and sorrow and a minutes silence before the raising of the flags.

Many jarjums joined the march this year, along with their elders, some of whom travelled in buses at the front, led by a police escort.

Wadawurrung art accompanies road users "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Motorists travelling along the Barwon Heads Road at Marshall will notice Wadawurrung cultural heritage art and design on their journey.

Wadawurrung contributions feature prominently around the road upgrades Marshall railway line bridge, 4km shared-use path and retaining wall near Settlement Road.

Its approach ramps feature 810 wall panels patterned to represent vertically broken boomerang flanks. BKK Architects collaborated with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation on the panel design.

Acrylic screens atop the bridge depict a kunuwarra (black swan) flying like movie reel slides as drivers pass. The kunuwarra images are the work of Wadawurrung artist Stephanie (Anie) Skinner.

The retaining wall coloured to reflect the regions soil is also lined with fins designed so the word Jerringot appears as drivers pass in either direction. Wadawurrung for water all around or place of billabongs, Jerringot is the name given to adjacent wetlands that are habitat for species including migratory wading birds, including Lathams snipe.

Its wonderful to think that as you cross over the bridge as a traveller, whether as a pedestrian or in a vehicle, youre travelling alongside kunuwarra, Ms Skinner said.

Kunuwarra is a significant creature to Wadawurrung, and to walk beside her as you move through the landscape honours her story and the importance of the living things that live in and surround the Barwon.

The path also includes etched tracks of native bird species including kunawarra, porronggitj (brolga), ibis, pelican and egret. Traditional owner BJ OToole designed the footprints, which appear in the vicinity of the relevant species habitat.

Along the path, two interpretive signage structures will provide information about the area, its native flora, fauna and Wadawurrung cultural significance. One signage structure will be built near Settlement Road, the other near the rail line bridge.

Living locally and with Lake Connewarre wetlands just down the road, I see these birds regularly flying over me when Im working on Country, Mr OToole said.

It was a real honour to create their footprints and to share my story. I have three children, so for them to be able to go where their fathers artwork appears will be special and theyll hold that connection for the rest of their lives.

100,000 trees planted for local koalas "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A Geelong-based koala conservation organisation has planted its 100,000th tree beside a creek in Teesdale.

Koala Clancy Foundation president Janine Duffy said that its a huge milestone for the small charity, which started by planting just 300 trees in 2016. They planted over 9000 trees in 2020, despite difficulties with lockdowns restricting volunteers, then reached 25,000 in 2021 and 27,000 in 2022, with the bonus of several wet winter seasons in a row.

Weve pressed on, growing and growing every year, because our local koalas need these trees urgently, Duffy said.

Climate change is threatening our regions koalas, but a tree can grow large enough to feed a koala in just four years.

Action taken now could mean the difference between life or death for Geelong koalas, and theres never been a better time to plant koala trees the years of good rainfall means that growth will be rapid.

Even with flooding to contend with, our tree survival rate is massive. On one farm at Little River, tree survival is 93 percent after four years, and on another near Mount Rothwell, tree survival is 87 percent after three years.

The foundation has plans to plant 300,000 koala trees by 2030. Dozens of landowners and farmers from all across the region have offered their fertile riverside habitat for revegetation, in the valleys of the Barwon, Moorabool and Little River.

Koala Clancy Foundation planted on our property in 2021, they were so organised and great to work with, and even returned to collect all the tree guards for recycling two years later, Mark and Heike Dunn from Stonehaven said.

Some of the trees they planted are already four metres high, Heike said.

Koala Clancy Foundation planted 5500 trees on my property in 2022, and are planting another 10,500 this year, Teesdales Brian OShannassy said.

Im impressed by their knowledge, determination and work ethic.

We love watching the wildlife return to these properties as the native vegetation is replaced, Duffy said.

Property owners with fertile river flats, creeks or drainage lines who are keen to revegetate are encouraged to register interest at koalaclancyfoundation.org.au/landowners/

Gunaikurnai to jointly manage Baw Baw, Alpine and other high country parks "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

On 26 October 2018 the Victorian Government, the Taungurung Land and Waters Council Aboriginal Corporation (TLaWCAC), and the Taungurung Traditional Owner group signed a number of agreements under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic), which means that ownership of nine Victorian parks and reserves, including Mt Buffalo National Park and a section of the Alpine National Park, and up to five surplus public land parcels have been transferred to the Taungurung Traditional Owner Group.

It should be noted that there is an ongoing territorial dispute between the Taungurung people and clans that identify as Ngurai Illum Wurrung, Waywurru and Dhudhuroa, and has the potential to affect the states treaty negotiations. This impacts the agreement in the east of the area, which includes Mt Buffalo and the Alpine national park.

It has now been announced that Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) has been re-negotiat(ing) the Gunaikurnai Recognition Settlement Agreement with the State of Victoria, and were excited by the addition of four new joint managed parks as part of our Early Outcomes package.

From early July 2023, the Avon Wilderness Park, Baw Baw National Park, Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park and the Alpine National Park on Gunaikurnai Country will now be joint managed by GLaWAC and Parks Victoria.

Country and Culture are significant pillars of the spiritual and lived strength that our members need and strive for.

We recognise the knowledge, strength and resilience of our Ancestors, Elders, and Community the driving force behind our decision making and our cultural lore.

We continue the long and hard fought path toward self-determination, realising the goals of the Gunaikurnai Whole Of Country Plan, in honour of those who have come before and those who continue to make the aspirations of the Gunaikurnai heard.

GMOs Revealed "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Editor's Note: This article is a reprint. It was originally published March 17, 2018.

While genetically modified organisms (GMOS), and the pesticides that go along with them, are touted as the solution to feed the world, the reality is a far cry from this industry-spread ideal. In reality, 86% of the value of U.S. agricultural exports in 2015 went to 20 destinations with low numbers of hungry people and high rates of human development scores.1 The top recipient? Canada.

In 2013 as well, U.S. farms contributed only 2.3% of the food supply to the countries with the most starving people.2 Such countries, unbeknownst to many Americans, actually produce most of their own food already. What they need is not for the U.S. to step up its production of genetically engineered (GE) corn and soy, but to be given resources to distribute and increase access to food while helping local farmers to earn a good living.

If we took GMOs off the market today, we would still be feeding the world with the same inefficacy that we are today. We have starvation. We have the biggest famine in human history happening over in sub-Saharan Africa right now. However, the problem with GMOs is one much larger than failed promises or misguided expectations.

Instead, it's a form of technology that threatens human health, the environment and the very food supply we depend on. At the foundation, "GMOs Revealed" seeks to answer a question that's relevant to all of us:

"What if the desire to use technology to enhance our world and save lives has evolved into a lust that, when paired with corporate greed and politics, becomes a catastrophic mass experiment that harms you and your family? Genetically modified foods, also known as GMOs, represent one of the most controversial issues in the world today. What is more vital to humanity, to each of us, than our food supply?"

The Not-so-Green Revolution

As Zach Bush explains, many of the problems with industrialized agriculture began with the Green Revolution, which is not at all "green" as its name suggests. It's easy to forget that at one point, not so long ago, all food was organically grown in a way that supported the ecosystem and environment as a whole. This all changed in the 1940s when the Green Revolution took hold and industrial, chemical-dependent farming techniques quickly spread to become the norm.

When WWII ended, there was a glut of petroleum, and in pet...

The EU risks repeating another vaccine apartheid with new deals with vaccine companies "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

July 4, 2023: Reuters reports that the European Commission has contracted several European vaccine production companies, such as Pfizer, to reserve capacity to make the EU up to 325 million vaccines a year in case of another future global health emergency. The contracts also obligate the companies to be adequately responsive to crises, including by stockpiling supplies where necessary.

The announcement of these contracts has been met with backlash from members of the Peoples Vaccine Alliance advocating for equitable access to medicines who claim they threaten to repeat the vaccine inequity experienced during Covid-19. As of June 2023, only 35% of people in low countries have received a Covid vaccination compared to 73% in high income countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO) dubbed this inequity a vaccine apartheid which led to large-scale, preventable deaths in the global South.

The EUs announcement of its vaccine contracts comes alongside discussions of a Global Pandemic Agreement by the WHO. The agreement aims to avoid a repeat of the "catastrophic failure" of the Covid pandemic and includes a commitment to reserve up to 20% of any tests, vaccines or treatments for low-income countries in a future global health emergency. However, there are concerns that inward-looking measures to protect supply lines, such as the EUs, threaten the Global Pandemic Agreement and undermine initiatives to ensure equitable access to medicine.

The decline of the humanities "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A couple of days ago the Sydney Morning Herald published an article on falling enrolments in university humanities subjects, with a focus on history and English.

Ive converted the data into an index to make it easier to see the trends in fields with different absolute numbers of full-time equivalent enrolments. In the late 2000s and early 2010s the humanities shared in general enrolment growth, but after that went into decline. Historys growth and decline were greater than the humanities in general.

Any theories about why the humanities enrolments declined are speculative. We rarely ask prospective or actual students how they choose between post-school options. But there are theories, which I am quoted on in the article. The theories are not mutually exclusive and so combined effects are possible.

Short attention spans?

English literature and history both involve time-consuming reading, which counts against them in the smart phone and social media era. I...

All Hail King Charles Now That Alan Partridge Has Made Him Almost Bearable "IndyWatch Feed National"

Couldnt sit through the 14-hour live coronation ceremony of King Charles III last month, because, you know, watching paint dry had more appeal? Well, theres good news. Weve had to wait more than a month, but you can now experience the real reason the British Empire collapsed (amid the unbearable weight of its own pomp and ceremony) without vomiting back up some of your lunch, courtesy of an 18-minute segment of the coronation featuring the commentary of Alan Partridge, Englands consummate media personality and premiere Royal Watcher.

If youre not sure who Partridge is, he makes even the most British of moments tolerable. The creation of British comedian and satirist Steve Coogan (along with writer Armando Iannucci, the brains behind, among other things, In The Spin), Partridge is described on his Wikipedia page thusly: A parody of British television personalities, Partridge is a tactless and inept broadcaster with an inflated sense of celebrity.

Without wishing to spoil any of the punchlines, this is a random line from Partridges commentary of Charlies coronation: Today a chance to look back and to cherish the many happy memories we have of the former Prince Charles. Of course, the investiture of a rather awkward 21-year-old with big ears and a plum in his mouth. But he was to blossom from what many would openly admit was an ugly duckling. He has grown into, perhaps not a swan, but certainly a very fine goose.

Definitely in the upper echelons of Best Things On The Internet. If you want mroe Alan Partridge, then Baby Cow Productions is his home on Youtube.

Multi-generation protest halts Coffs Coast logging "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

All rise! Local artist ready to hold court in Byron "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A basketball court near the centre of Byron Bay would be turned into a giant original artwork under a proposal being considered by Byron Council.

Council has received a proposal from local contemporary artist, Laith McGregor, to transform the little-used court, which lies in the Byron recreation grounds on Tennyson Street.

This art court in Melbourne has been popular with locals. Image: Byron Council

Under the plan, McGregor, a former winner of the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize, would work with Art Courts Australia to create a dynamic artwork on the surface of the court that is integrated with the existing line markings.

Local youth would be included in the creation of the work, at both the design and implementation phases.

The benefits of reinvigorating the court include increased community use, opportunity for engagement with youth in creation of the work and creating an iconic artwork by a leading contemporary artist at scale in the heart of Byron Bay, Councils Arts and Culture Officer, Melitta Firth, said in a report on the proposal to Councils Arts and Creative Industries Committee.

Council is also currently investigating upgrades to this area, considering the proximity to the newly opened Sandhills Estate Skate Park, Jarjumirr Park.

This project could complement planned upgrades and improve amenity of the area.

The artist proposes developing three concept designs based on the history of the site for approval by the Committee, allowing local youth to be involved in the design trajectory, and potentially in the outer margins of the court painting.

Council would need to allocate an estimated $36,280 from its public art and arts and culture budgets to fund the project.

News Corp condemns ICAC and stands for corruption

With the release of NSW ICACs findings on Gladys Berejiklian, an editorial in The Australian has condemned the Commission and made a bold stand for corruption, writes David McIlveen.

LAST WEEK saw the official opening of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the release of the long-awaited findings from the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) on former Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Quite a week.

It makes for a useful occasion to reflect on corruption in Australian politics and the media, and to point out the people politicians, publications and hacks that line up to side with the guilty, attack the accountability body, and provide every lame excuse to downplay or dismiss the findings of corruption. Presumably in hopes of weakening the public unity in condemning something so clearly against its interests.

The few senior current and former Liberals that provided comment on the findings were as predictable as they were vacuous and unprincipled in their responses, and dont deserve any serious treatment. Their contempt for evidence and ICACs hard work and careful deliberation is fitting with the Liberal brand. Just let us use the Treasury as our own private bank account, you can hear them thinking.

The funambulist nature of the Murdoch press is always a little more interesting, however, as its forever obliged to try to present itself as for the people to its limited readership, while simultaneously promoting the interests of the Liberal Party and its associates.

Lets look at The Australians editorial position on the NSW ICAC findings, for...

1.5C Breached for First Time During Northern Hemisphere Summer "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

The Paris Agreement goal of keeping global surface air temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average is starting to fade into the background, climate experts say, as Reuters reported.

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), in the beginning of June, average temperatures worldwide climbed above 1.5 degrees Celsius for several days.

The world has just experienced its warmest early June on record, following a month of May that was less than 0.1C cooler than the warmest May on record. Monitoring our climate is more important than ever to determine how often and for how long global temperatures are exceeding the 1.5 degrees threshold. Every single fraction of a degree matters to avoid even more severe consequences of the climate crisis, said Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Deputy Director Samantha Burgess, according to C3S.

Global average temperatures had gone above 1.5 degrees Celsius before, but not in the northern hemisphere summer, which began on June 1, reported Reuters.

Weve run out of time because change takes time, said Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climatologist at Australias University of New South Wales, as Reuters reported.

Heat waves have been bringing dangerous temperatures to the United States and Mexico, as the Canadian wildfires continue to produce hazardous smoke and diminish air quality in Canada and the U.S.

As a climate scientist I feel like I am watching a global train wreck in slow motion, said Andrew Weaver of the University of Victoria, as reported by the PBS Newshour. 1) Government urges caution in efforts to free hostage pilot in Papua
2 hours ago
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Moeldoko, has stated that efforts to free Susi Air pilot Mark Mehrtens, who is being held hostage by Papuan separatists, must be handled with caution.

He mentioned that the government will also monitor the on-site conditions.

"If the officers act recklessly and a victim is harmed, we would face serious consequences. We need to carefully calculate our actions; there is no room for reckless behavior," Moeldoko said during a press conference on Monday.

He emphasized that the military, police, and Foreign Affairs Ministry have understood their respective roles and functions in the rescue operation of the New Zealander pilot.

Moeldoko further highlighted that the Indonesian government is employing a soft approach based on diplomacy and negotiation to secure the release of Mehrtens.

Market Talk July 3, 2023 "IndyWatch Feed National"

ASIA:

A private sector survey in China revealed that factory activity growth slowed in June due to concerns about sluggish market conditions. The Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) dropped from 50.9 in May to 50.5 in June, indicating a marginal expansion. The index mark of 50 separates growth from contraction. The survey focuses on around 650 private and state-owned manufacturers, with a particular emphasis on export-oriented firms in coastal regions. This data, along with a separate official survey showing a decline in factory activity, suggests that Chinas economy lost momentum in the second quarter as demand weakened. The survey also indicated a softening in manufacturing output and new orders during June.

Newly Released JFK Documents Raise an Important Question: Whats Left? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Its a good thing that the US government keeps releasing documents related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Last week, for example, another batch of 1,103 records was made public, which brings the total of documents unveiled by the Biden administration to more than 16,000.

But what about the rest?

The White House noted that 99 percent of JFK records have now been released. However, when taking into account that the total number of documents made public is more than 70,000, that means that hundreds of records are still locked away somewhere almost 60 years after that tragic day in Dallas.

Why?

To get an answer, we must first turn to Dr. Colleen Shogan, the current Archivist of the United States, who said the rules for disclosure are simple.

At the National Archives, we believe in the importance of government transparency and the accessibility of information, she said, adding that the goal of the National Archives is to ensure that the maximum amount of information is made available to the American people, while we protect what we must.

Thats not very specific.

A memorandum from President Joe Biden sheds a bit more light on why some documents have not yet been released.

[President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992] permits the continued postponement of public disclosure of information in records concerning President Kennedys assassination only when postponement remains necessary to protect against an identifiable harm to the military defense, intelligence operations, law enforcement, or the conduct of foreign relations that is of such gravity that it outweighs the public interest in disclosure, the June 30 memorandum states.

That is a bit more useful.

However, to get a more detailed answer as to which documents are still being withheld and why, one has to dig a little bit deeper. Specifically, this information c...

Building pipeline continues to decline "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Building pipeline struggles

Building approvals bounced +20.6 per cent in May to 15,032, possibly clearing off an Easter backlog.

House approvals were fairly flat for the month, and at -15 per cent lower than a year earlier continue to trend lower.

The bounce was overwhelmingly due to an increase in unit approvals in Sydney in this lumpy data series, with most other capital cities still trending lower.

This was a welcome monthly increase, although around 15,000 building approvals in a month is still a relatively weak figure overall.

A Schwab prophecy come true? Atlanta Airport employs digital facial recognition IDs "IndyWatch Feed National"

World Economic Forum founder and executive director Klaus Schwab heaped praise on the Chinese Communist Party this week for adopting "new COVID control measures" while boosting "social dynamism" at the WEF's Annual Meeting of the New Champions. We will break down in this article what Schwab means by "social dynamism." This is important, why? Because Schwab, a globalist, a futurist and a transhumanist, holds immense sway over many of our Western politicians in Canada, the U.S., Australia, etc., at both the state and federal levels. Heads of state and governors of all political stripes, from Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia, flock to his meetings in Davos each year. Kemp told the corporate media he was going to Davos in January 2023 to "sell Georgia." He no sooner returned and we found out that Georgia became one of the first handful of states to launch a new drivers' license with biometric digital identities using facial recognition...

Scream if you wanna fall faster... "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

ISM gauge plunges

The closely-followed US ISM gauge was released today and it slowed from a reading of 46.9 in May to just 46.0 in June (a print of below 50 denotes contraction).

Source: Institute for Supply Management

This was the weakest monthly reading since the shuttered economy of all the way back in May 2020.

The prices component contracted faster still, dropping from 44.2 in May to 41.8 in June.

It's a clear indication that the battle against inflation is being won, with the balance of risks tilting somewhat further towards a recession.

Cape Tribulation Self Drive "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

My partner and I are heading to Cairns in less than 2 weeks and were looking at doing a self-drive tour up to Cape Tribulation (single day).

Having never been there before, I just wanted to check this itinerary looks okay? I know it's missing a few key stops (such as Mossman Gorge) but we're hoping to check this place out another day/trip.

Cairns --- Port Douglas --- Daintree River Cruise (near the ferry) --- Catch ferry across --- Mt Alexandra Lookout --- Daintree Discovery Centre --- Daintree Ice Cream --- Dubuji Boardwalk/Cape Tribulation --- Back to Cairns

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Additionally if anyone can offer must-see places to check out on a self-drive through the Tablelands that would also be much appreciated.

Edit: Sorry for the jumbled format. This was the best "list view" I could manage whilst using my phone.

Stock for sale falls further "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Dearth of stock continues

Rental vacancies remained generally low in June according to CoreLogic, with several industry participants noting a recent demographic shift back towards the inner cities.

Capital city vacancy rates remained at a record low of 1.1 per cent.

The number of properties listed for sale also continued to decline across the combined capital cities, to now sit some -26.4 per cent below the 5-year average.

This has clearly underpinned the market, with home values increasing by +1.1 per cent in June and +2.8 per cent for the June quarter.

The quarterly increase was driven by a +4.9 per cent increase in Sydney, and a +3 per cent increase in Brisbane, though recent sentiment suggests something of a cooling in these markets.
