Not quite 20 years ago, I got an invitation to spend a week as a visiting blogger at an exciting new group blog called Crooked Timber. In the manner of the most catastrophic house guests, I managed to turn that into permanent residence.

Looking back at posts from that time, its startling how active we were; with multiple posts most days. Thats ebbed away to one or two posts per week, but we are still here to celebrate our 20th anniversary, unlike most of the people who were blogging back then.

Its easy enough to see why this was so. Back then, although the term social media wasnt in widespread use, social media was blogs and not much else. There was no Facebook or Twitter and mainstream media maintained an air of snooty disdain.

Once these commercial platforms arrived, and began attracting millions, then billions of users, the writing was on the wall for traditional blogging. Their features made them accessible to lots of people for whom blogging was just too difficult and, at least initially, their reliance on advertising seemed like a small price to pay. Blogs carried on, but as bloggers moved on or passed on, or just got tired, they mostly werent replaced by new entrants.

The deal for users got worse and worse over time, in the process Cory Doctorow calls ensh*ttification. But network effects worked powerfully to keep us all locked into the platforms where our families/friends/interlocutors remained.

Until recently, there was no end in sight to this process. But, as Steins Law has it If something cannot go on forever, it will stop. In the last couple years, weve seen disastrous mis-steps from both Facebook and Twitter, as well as a sharp decline in public opinion of the tech giants and their products.

Thats allowed the emergence of alternatives to advertising-driven networks where algorithms (theyre really just models) determine what you see and what you dont. The most important examples, for me, at any rate, have been Mastodon (non-commercial Twitter alternative) along with the larger Fediverse, and Substack, a platform for subscription-supported newsletters.

We dont yet know what will become of all this. But we built by academics was strictly non-commercial. The introduction of the .com domain produced an explosion of commercial offerings and a speculative mania unsurpassed in scale and silliness, at least until the advent of Bitcoin. A crucial part of this was the attempt by portals like Yahoo and AOL to created walled gardens, where uses would remain while they were online, rather than wandering the wilds of the Internet....

Lane's New Australia "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

In the 1890s a charismatic Australian journalist named William Lane attempted to establish a socialist utopia in Paraguay. A book published about this enterprise in 1912 has been republished by Bonfire Books (None but the Crocodiles by Stewart Grahame).

What is so interesting about New Australia Movement is that it had so much in its favour....and yet it nonetheless rapidly failed.

The socialist experiment in Paraguay had every reason to prosper. Paraguay had recently experienced a war and had lost much of its adult male population. Its government was therefore keen to attract new settlers and so offered William Lane a large amount of quality land. At the same time, some bitter labour disputes in Australia led to a large number of skilled and experienced workers joining the movement. Lane himself was genuinely idealistic and principled and an inspiring leader. Nor was the experiment overly radical; for instance, members were allowed to continue to live in families.

The idea of the new society was a socialist one: what was produced would be held in common and then distributed equally to each member.

I won't go into the details about how this unfolded, as it is described so well in the book (which you can purchase here). It is curious, though, that the reason for failure was predicted some 600 years earlier by the medieval theologian St Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas justified the holding of private property as follows:

Firstly, because everyone is more solicitous about procuring what belongs to himself alone than that which is common to all or many, since each shunning labour leaves to another what is the common burden of all, as happens with a multitude of servants. Secondly, because human affairs are conducted in a more orderly fashion if each has his own duty of procuring a certain thing, while there would be confusion if each should procure things haphazard. Thirdly, because in this way the peace of men is better preserved, for each is content with his own.

Dutton will make the comments on Friday at an event organised by the Institute of Public Affairs, a Liberal-aligned thinktank that has publicly opposed curbs on coal-fired power and has lobbied against the net zero by 2050 policy.

Ukraine has accused Russia of planning to carry out a sabotage attack at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant that it has controlled since it seized it by force in March 2022. Although it reports this morning that this current threat is decreasing, the situation is fluid and the plant remains vulnerable to both accidents and attacks. While this ongoing crisis should not lead to panic, there is no cause for complacency either.

Unfortunately, the American Nuclear Society (ANS) and other commenters have been busy attempting to dismiss the risks that either an accident or a deliberate attack could lead to a significant radiological release with far-reaching consequences. Simply put, the ANS is dead wrong here, and by minimizing the potential risk it is endangering Ukrainians and others who may be affected by lulling them into a false sense of security and undermining any motivation to prepare for the worst. Effective emergency preparedness requires a clear-eyed understanding of the actual threat.

As I have pointed out previously, the fact that the six reactors have been in shutdown mode for many months (with one in hot, as opposed to cold, shutdown) does reduce the risk somewhat compared to a situation where reactors are operating or have only recently shut down. The decay heat in the reactors cores decreases significantly over time, although the rate of decrease slows down quite a bit after a few months. However, this does not mean, as ANS misleadingly implies, that there is no risk of a major radiological release that could disperse over a wide area. What it does mean is that if cooling were disrupted to one or more of the reactors, then there would be a longer period of timedays instead of hoursfor operators to fix the problem before the cooling water in the reactor cores would start to boil away and drop below the tops of the fuel assemblies, causing the fuel to overheat and degrade.

Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) largely chosen because it was cheaper than treating it with the more expensive systems offered outside of TEPCO, on the international market.

TEPCO considered implementing a reverse osmosis system to remove radioactive contaminants from the water. RO is a widely used technology for desalination and purification. But the process was far too expensive given the volumes of water that needed processing, completely removing various radionuclides, including cesium, strontium, and cobalt, from the contaminated water.

CONCRETE ENCAPSULATION

Solidifying the wastewater in concrete has multiple benefits over ocean dumping, would allow all the water to be processed and removed from the tanks in as little as 5 years, considerably faster than the 30+ year timeframe for ocean disposal.

The tritium (which along with carbon-14 is not removed from the water) would remain trapped inside the concrete with negligible dose outside or on its surface since tritium betas cannot penetrate the skin.

Japan consumes approximately 40 million tons of cement annually, according to the Japanese Cement Association. If cement usage patterns in Japan are comparable to those in the United States, roughly one third of that amount, or 13 million tons, is likely used for making concrete for applications with minimal human contact or exposure.

Given this, a significant portion of the ALPS-treated wastewater could potentially be utilized for concrete required for various purposes at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant site itself.

This could include concrete for barrier walls, storage containers, stabilizing radioactive soil piles, and other similar applications.

Therefore, using concrete for low human contact is not without precedent as Japan plans to recycle far more radioactive soil for civil works projects which is another controversial topic domestically.

THE (NATIONAL) economy at the macroeconomic level is treated by central bankers and most academics as a thing in itself. Its essence is characterised by aggregate indicators gross domestic product, aggregate unemployment rate, inflation rate, etcetera.

Macroeconomic fetishism

Inside the macroeconomy is a black box. Analysis of the "microeconomy" is monopolised by the paradigm of Neoclassical Economics, enthroned in the (English language) economics "discipline" since the late Nineteenth Century.

Neoclassical Economics is not rooted in the empirics of economic structures but in a priorism. It is a fairy story. The black box of macroeconomic theory is facilitated by the absence of an adequate microeconomic (structural) analysis.

The much-revered J M Keynes played a part in this unfortunate scenario. In confronting Britains 1930s Depression (with large-scale ongoing unemployment), Keynes stylised analysis was purely at the macroeconomic level with inattention to empirical detail.

This was even at the time that Britains relation to the global economy was changing and its internal economic structure undergoing significant transformation. Within that analytical constraint, Keynes highlighted that mass unemployment could be sustained, that a dearth of aggregate demand was the source and that decisive public action was necessary to counter that dearth. And fair enough as a short-term fix.

But after Keynes premature death at 62 in 1946 came the "Keynesians".

Megan Jane de Paulo rolls out her tribute to the humble scone a tea-time accompaniment firmly 'en-scon-ced' in our culinary history. Cuppa, anyone?

IT HAS NO yeast, so it is not bread. Not a cake. Nor a biscuit. Not pastry but most closely related to it.

It is the humble scone.

A nostalgic baked nibble, snack sized, usually slathered with jam and cream... in my case, shoved into one hand, with a tepid Milo in the other, upon being sent away to play while adults chat over cups of tea.

An assemblage of crumbs coaxed together with care, flour, milk and cream/butter, and some baking powder for lightness and rise. This time-tested recipe can be created with a series of modifications and perversions for fun along the way, skirting the boundaries of sweet and savoury at the whim of the baker.

The definitive origin of the scone remains in some dispute, but it seems to have derived from the Scottish bannock or the Dutch schoonbrood. The Oxford English Dictionary records its first mention in English literature from 1513.

The addition of scones to "High Tea" was initiated in 1840 by Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford, where it was served with jam and clotted cream although the working class break-time from where the concept of High Tea is derived probably almost certainly served scones.

Do you say scone (as in gone) or scone (as in tone)? It seems to be more regional than class-based; the majority of people rhyme scone with gone. Astonishingly Australians have never managed to create a diminutive or nickname for scones there are no sconnos to have at smoko, or jammy rocks. We actually stick to its correct name.

Shoved aside by upstart break-time snacks such as the muffin, cruffin and excessively accessorised doughnut, scones have rolled back into focus recently with a resurgence of a long-term unresolvable...

Thats five bank failures or rescues in 11 days, including Credit Suisse, one of the largest banks in the world and the second largest in Switzerland.

Combined losses of stockholders and creditors of these institutions exceed US$200 billion. Market losses in the banking sector are much greater.

Walter Wriston, the greatest banker of the 20^th century after Pierpont Morgan, personally tutored me on this topic 40 years ago.

In a bank run, you can pull your money out of banks and invest in gold, silver, land, or anything else. But you give the money to the seller, and she puts it back in the bank.

The point is the money always ends up in the bank. The system is a closed circuit.

Of course, it could go to a different bank, but all banks can borrow from each other through the fed funds market and the Eurodollar market. Again, the money always ends up in the bank.

Putting cash in a coffee can (or mattress) is one exception, but if you try to withdraw more than US$10,000, your bank will file a Currency Transaction Report (CTR) with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), and youll end up in a file next to Osama bin Laden. And the IRS gets a heads-up.

So, thats not a practical solution.

These failures and rescues were accompanied by extraordinary regulatory actions.

These actions have thrown the US banking system and bank depositors into utter confusion. Are all bank deposits now insured or just the ones Janet Yellen decides are systemically important? Whats the basis for that decision?

The most important question is: Is the crisis over? Has the Fed done enough to reassure depositors that the system is sound? Has the panic subsided?

The answer is no.

The panic is just getting started

We base that answer on the history of the two acute financial crises in recent decades 1998 and 2008.

The 1998 crisis reached the acute stage on 28 September 1998, just before the rescue of LTCM. We were hours away from the sequential shutdown of every stock and bond exchange in the world.

But that crisis began in June 1997 with the devaluation of the Thai baht and massive capital flight from Asia and then Russia. It took 15 months to go from a serious crisis to an existential threat.

Likewise, the 2008 crisis reached the acute stage on 15 September 2008 with the bankruptcy filing of Lehman Brothers.

Its Time to Get a Second Opinion on Inflation and Use Some Home Remedies to Escape it "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

What would you do if you knew your doctor has made an incorrect diagnosis before prescribing you some medicine? Would you just sit there and take it?

Because right now, PhD bearing central bankers are completely misunderstanding the source of inflation. And so, their response has been dangerously misguided. But investors dont seem to be acting in response to the threat.

Today, we explore whats really going on, and what you can do about it

As the modern macroeconomists who run our monetary policy see things, inflation is caused by aggregate demand shifts. If people buy more stuff, it raises prices. If theyre buying less, prices fall.

Closely tied to this is employment, which has an impact on the amount people can buy. But its a secondary factor.

A central bankers job is to manage the economy so that demand is growing moderately. If it grows too fast and prices start rising, higher interest rates are used to slow it down. If the economy is struggling and prices dont go up, or even fall, the economy needs stimulus with lower interest rates.

The fact that this doesnt really consider the supply side of things is the first big flaw in the theory. Especially in the wake of a pandemic that disrupted the supply sector of the economy badly.

What weve seen over the past two years is a spike in producer costs. Resources and energy prices surged first, well before consumer prices. Yes, this eventually led to a shift in consumer prices too. But the causation is obvious because of the temporal relationship producer prices moved and then consumer prices followed.

In 2020 and 2021, I tracked this through producer price indices (PPIs) and purchasing manager indices (PMIs). These are also known as factory gate prices, meaning the prices that factories pay for their inputs. They surged rapidly long before consumer prices did, allowing me to predict the consumer price inflation weve seen since.

The misdiagnosis on the part of central bankers confusing the inflationary spike for a demand-based issue rather than a supply issue is the source of what happens next in financial markets.

You see, interest rates are not just important to demand, but to supply too. Raising interest rates doesnt just slow demand. It also raises costs for producers, including those that supply energy and resources, the lack of which caused the PPI spike in the first place.

In other words, central bankers have made producer price spikes worse by adding costs to struggling factories, energy producers, miners, and other producers. Theyve added to the cause of inflation.

The royal commission report into the robodebt scheme paints a grim picture of a minister keen to use more friendly media to counter reporting on the scheme, and a particularly mean-spirited strategy to attempt to silence victims speaking out that was labelled as an abuse of the power of his office.
In early 2017, victims of the robodebt scheme began speaking to media, including Guardian Australia, about the debt notices they were receiving and the devastating impact it was having on their lives.
The commissioner, Catherine Holmes, said in her report that Tudges then media adviser, Rachelle Miller, developed a media strategy to introduce a counter narrative in more friendly media that was focused on cracking down on welfare cheats.
The strategy included finding case studies of legitimate debts detected by the robodebt system and placing stories about convicted welfare fraudsters.
A media officer in the Department of Human Services noted in an email in January 2017 that News Corp isnt interested in the line being run by left-leaning media but is keen on the alternative view. As such, the focus will be on working with News to achieve this.
The ministers office then requested information on cases that had appeared in the media, as well as cases supposedly demonstrating the success of the system.
The report found Tudge had personally involved himself in responding to media.
Tudge told the commission in his evidence his focus was on addressing the implementation issues with the scheme, rather than engaging in a strategy of deflection.
The report found Tudge had approved the release of information about case studies sent to the national affairs editor of the Australian, Simon Benson, in early January 2017.
Benson went on to write an exclusive that appeared on the front page of the paper on 26 January 2017, claiming Labor had made an embarrassing blunder and referring to people who had spoken publicly about their experiences with robodebt as so-called victims.

Data out during the week showed a potential surge in employment for the US, but fears that the economy may be significantly overheating again were somewhat allayed when the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly update.

The allure of magic "IndyWatch Feed National"

I am a sucker of magic, mentalist tricks, and illusions. Here is a video of Harry Milas doing some of his stuff on an Australian TV show.

So good is Milas at his job that he now specialises in a unique line of work: hes enlisted by casinos around the world, from Las Vegas to the Middle East, to catch people cheating. It is this work that inspired his latest show, The Unfair Advantage, in which he goes against convention and shows his audience how to cheat in any way they want while also demonstrating all the ways they will be caught.

Milas calls the show a pretty frank warning, though many people still think theyll be able to get away with it.

Milas is known as a mechanical expert, or someone who knows all the ways to get an unfair advantage in cards. When he offers to demonstrate dealing seconds for me, I try desperately not to look too excited until he casually shuffles his deck in a spectacular way, which provokes an odd, happy noise out of me. Kindly, he doesnt make fun of it. Magic is a very optimistic art form, hell tell me later. It brings out the inner child. Its a gentle reminder that youre never going to know everything.

He shows me the ace of spades on top of the deck then starts dealing, discreetly keeping the ace on top with his thumb as he fluidly deals out the cards underneath it. This is probably the most prevalent card cheating move, he explains. It should look like nothing at all. And it does.

Truth is, its incredibly common for people to try to cheat, he says. Most of my work in casinos is confirming suspicions. And most of the time, its the dealer. Sometimes, it is someone who is winning really well and consistently it doesnt matter how fair your play is, the casinos are going to be interested in you.

A lot of the work involves studying video footage to see if he can spot a mechanic, watching the movement of their thumbs, the bevel of the deck in their hand. Most people are really fucking bad at these moves and its very obvious, he says. You can only start even thinking about trying to cheat once there is no question about being able to deliver 100% of the time. If its any less than that, you are going to be caught.

On Wednesday Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny announced an Interim Design and Development Overlay which included mandatory height limits of 3 storeys on the section of land between Kananook Creek Boulevard and Nepean Highway. This area has a very sensitive creek interface and is adjacent to the Frankston foreshore. Despite its importance, until now it has had no protection from overdevelopment. Developers have lodged plans for 14, 15, and 16 storey towers! Of course their plan is to build luxury apartments - no risk of any dwellings that a young person on a basic income could live in.

The Stop the Great Wall of Frankston Campaign Committee has done a mighty job in campaigning against high rise development in Frankston's waterfront precinct. It included a Blues Concert last weekend, and a rally back on 13 May at which I was one of the speakers. The rally had an audience of hundreds, and their Petition to stop the Great Wall has attracted over 4000 signatures. Planning Democracy, and the Protectors of Public Lands, as well as many local groups and residents, have supported this campaign.

Of course this battle has a long way to go yet, but the Minister has done the right thing, and her intervention deserves our support.

It gives us hope that there is still room for community opinion and action to influence our decision makers.

Fighting the legacy of colonisation with innovation "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

First Nations communities are being encouraged to share their knowledge with STEM researchers in a new initiative aimed at addressing underrepresented issues.

The National Indigenous Innovation Challenge, hosted by Monash University, aims to support traditional Indigenous knowledge with STEM research to identify issues in First Nations communities and find sustainable solutions.

Program lead and proud Wadjak/Ballardong Noongar man, Associate Dean Professor Christopher Lawrence, says First Nations communities have knowledge which crucial to addressing long-standing issues.

The problem were talking about is the legacy of colonisation that has impacted on our community, and what we want our indigenous people to tell us, is what they think the problems are and what they think the innovative solution can be to help solve those problems.

Part of my role at the faculty of IT at Monash is to actually change that narrative around how we perceive indigenous knowledge I think they were doing amazing things that were only now starting to discover how extraordinary their work was and is and how that actually informs a lot of the work that we do now. The machines that they created, like the flying machine, the boomerangthese are the sorts of tools that were around way before Da Vinci, way before Galileo, our people were astronomers as well.

Associate Dean Professor Lawrence encouraged all those who want to be involved to reach out to him or the Monash University National Indigenous Innovation Challenge.

On June 20, the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) released its 2023 Canadas Energy Future report, developing scenarios for a path to net zero by 2050. These scenarios project roughly a tripling of nuclear energy generation capacity in Canada by 2050, seemingly reinforcing then-natural resources minister Seamus ORegans statement in 2020 that there is no path to net zero without nuclear.

However, underlying both the scenarios and ORegans contention is wishful thinking about the economics of nuclear energy, and how fast nuclear power can be scaled up.

The new nuclear capacity the report envisions consists of so-called small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), which have so far not been built in Canada. Aside from refurbishing existing CANDU reactors, the CER does not think any more standard sized nuclear reactors will be built in Canada. Most of this buildup is to happen between 2035-2050, meaning that nuclear power will not help meet the governments stated goal of decarbonizing the electricity grid by 2035.

But can SMRs be built rapidly after 2035? Only two Crown companies in the business of generating electricity for the grid have proposed to build SMRs: NB Power in New Brunswick, and Ontario Power Generation (OPG).

A document has surfaced in Japan that raises suspicions that the Japanese government is paying IAEA officials large sums of money to work with each other and collude in the dumping of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water into the ocean.

According to the document, which was obtained by citizen journalist Mindle on Nov. 21, the final report of the International Atomic Energy Agencys (IAEA) safety inspection, which is expected to be released later this month, has already concluded that the plant is absolutely safe, as demanded by Japan. To this end, the Japanese government has paid more than 1 million euros in political contributions to IAEA officials, so there is no need to worry about opposition from South Korea and China to the dumping of contaminated water into the ocean, which will begin as early as mid to late July, according to Foreign Ministry official A in the document.

FUTABA, Japan (AP) The head of the U.N. atomic agency toured Japans tsunami-wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant on Wednesday and said he is satisfied with still-contentious plans to release treated radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean

The wastewater release still faces opposition in and outside Japan.

Earlier Wednesday, Grossi met with local mayors and fishing association leaders and stressed that the IAEA will be present throughout the water discharge, which is expected to last decades, to ensure safety and address residents concerns. He said he inaugurated a permanent IAEA office at the plant, showing its long-term commitment.

The water discharge is not some strange plan that has been devised only to be applied here, and sold to you, Grossi said at the meeting in Iwaki, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the plant. He said the method is certified by the IAEA and is followed around the world.

Local fishing organizations have rejected the plan because they worry their reputation will be damaged even if their catch isnt contaminated. It is also opposed by groups in South Korea, China and some Pacific Island nations due to safety concerns and political reasons.

ROBERT TAYLOR is dying. He has months to live. His family of six children and 11 grandchildren want him to come home and spend what time is left with them.

Robert is slated for deportation to the United Kingdom, his birth country. He has been in immigration custody for 16 months. He was born in England in 1973 but as a 10-month-old baby, arrived in Australia with his parents in February 1974.

In the nearly 50 years since, he has never left Western Australia. He has grown up Australian, bred here. He has no family in the UK. Unlike his parents, he never thought too much about pursuing Australian citizenship. He was fine on a permanent residency status.

But a carceral conviction late in life for a burglary brought him to the attention of the Department of Immigration. The Prisoners Review Board validated him with parole granted but the Department of Immigration waited for him as he was to be released and they transferred Robert from Bunbury Regional Prison to Northams Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre.

His Australian-born and bred family was devastated.

Robert made mistakes and did gaol time. After 50 years in this country, his whole life, he does not deserve deportation. In the last ten years, more than 5,000 residents have been deported.

Geelong train line disruptions "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Commuters should prepare for rail disruptions while travelling between Warrnambool, Geelong, Wyndham Vale, Tarneit and Melbourne due to work progressing on Victorias Big Build.

Dynon Road over the regional rail lines in West Melbourne is closed as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project to strengthen and widen the bridge, meaning trains must be kept off the tracks below.

The works will help connect the twin tunnels to the city to make it easier and quicker to get into the city from the west will cause disruptions to the Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat lines in July.

West Gate Tunnel Project executive director Peter Lellyett said the works would help slash travel times from Geelong to Melbourne once complete in 2025.

With projects like the West Gate Tunnel and Metro Tunnel really taking shape to transform the way Victorians travel, he said.

Were working hard to ensure commuters are informed and prepared for these disruptions, we thank commuters for their patience.

All Warrnambool line services will terminate at the Geelong station from July 8 to 23 and from July 29 to August 13, with passengers changing to a Geelong Line train to and from Southern Cross Station on weekdays.

Coaches will also replace trains on some nights between Southern Cross and Waurn Ponds in July and August.

Weekday trains to the city and afternoon trains from the city will not stop at Wyndham Vale or Tarneit from July 10 to 21 and July 31 to August 11, with alternative services provided during these times.

Trains will run normally on the weekends and outside these hours, and a temporary timetable will be available for passengers to plan their journey.

Firefighter Graham bids farewell "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Belmont has bid farewell to one of its long-serving firefighters, who enjoyed working his last shift with his daughter.

Graham Lane started his firefighting career in July 1988 and celebrated close to 35 years of service at the Belmont Fire Station during his last working shift on Wednesday, July 5.

Mr Lane said he took up firefighting as a lifetime career and loved working with a great group of people who could rely on each other.

One of the guys at the footy club was a firefighter, and he started talking about it, and I thought, wow, that sounds like a good career, and it has been.

My favourite part of the job is the camaraderie of knowing each persons looking after everyone and the interesting type of work that we do.

Mr Lane said it was the right time for him to retire from firefighting, and he looked forward to having more time on his hands to play golf, go camping, fish, and look after the grandkids.

Its pretty demanding shift work for 35 years, he said.

You get to a point in your career where youre putting a breathing apparatus on during every call, which isnt so bad when youre 25, but gets harder as you get older.

Daughter Becky Finke followed in her dads firefighting footsteps and said she was honoured to work with him during his last shift.

The more people you speak to that do the job, theyll say its the best job in the world, so it didnt take too much convincing, she said.

You dont know what youre going to get each day which keeps it interesting, and the bond with our teammates is like having another family away from home.

This State was called Queensland after Queen Victoria in 1859, and this was in the south-west corner. But really it is where Maxs people come from. Justice for robodebt "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Between 2016 and 2020, the Australian government inflicted nearly $2 billion of imaginary "debts" on welfare recipients, courtesy of an illegal automated overpayment calculation system. The policy led to suicides as people struggled to pay debts they didn't owe. The scheme was scrapped in 2020, and the illegal "debts" were later forgiven and repaid. And today, a royal commission into the fiasco has recommended prosecuting its architects:

The architects of Robodebt will be referred for criminal and civil prosecution after a royal commission handed down its report into the unlawful scheme today.
Commissioner Catherine Holmes has branded the former coalition government's debt-raising scheme an "extraordinary saga" of "venality, incompetence and cowardice".

"The report paints a picture of how the Robodebt [scheme] ... was put together on an ill-conceived, embryonic idea," Commissioner Holmes wrote.

"It is remarkable how little interest there seems to have been in ensuring the scheme's legality, how rushed its implementation was, how little thought was given to how it would affect welfare recipients and the lengths to which public servants were prepared to go to oblige ministers on a quest for savings."

It also finds that former PM Scott Morrison (who was social services minister at the time robodebt was created) misled Cabinet by failing to provide all relevant information about the scheme and its lawfulness. To prevent this happening in future, it recommends repealing Australia's blanket exemption of cabinet documents from the Freedom of Information Act. Its still secret who should be prosecuted, and what for. But the onus is now on Australian federal agencies to follow the recommendation. The problem is that they have a track-record of perverting the course of justice to protect those in power. Hopefully that won't happen in this case.

Prologue

Victor Tribute wanted to be a hermit.

Not that he wanted to live in a mountain cave and take a vow of silence. He didnt want to be an eremite. He wasnt sure what an eremite was, but he pictured a religious nut, living in skins, having taken a vow of silence and perhaps a strict regimen of dawn chanting. He shuddered at the thought. Victor wasnt the least bit religious, was not fond of chanting and certainly did not want to rough it in the wild or in any other way, indeed.

Victor Tribute sighed. For while living as a total recluse had its attractions, he did appreciate his creature comforts. Moreover, he was a graphic designer who worked on short-term contracts from a rather luxurious highrise beachfront apartment and enjoyed his work. Didnt want to give it up. So for Victor, unless his cave had access to good quality streaming broadband and a reliable power supply, he would need to change careers.

But Victor had no intention of changing careers. He just wanted people most people, not quite all people to just keep well the fuck away from him.

Because Victor Tribute was decidedly misanthropic. He hadnt always been this way. He wasnt really a bad person. He paid his taxes. He said Please and Thank you. He stood up on buses when the elderly, pregnant and other similarly inconvenienced required a seat. But it had come to pass, over the course of his almost 39 years on Earth, that anthropoids had eroded him, like endless drips on granite. And now he was nothing more than a sliver. Nearly worn through.

He was heartily sick of people and their banal small talk; their tedious little dinner parties, where they discussed other peoples tawdry iniquities, revealing more in the process of their own. He was tired of petty gameplaying; of spending a lot of time with someone only to find out they just wanted to be friends. And so on. Ad infinitum. He wanted no more to do with all that. With all of them.

And so Victor Tribute wanted to be a hermit. Or was it a recluse? Whatever, as Victor Tribute sat in the apartment, looking down at the stick figures bustling around 19 storeys below, he began to devise a plan in his very unusual mind.

Newly-elected Windermere Ward representative Councillor Sarah Hathway will replace former councillor Kylie Grzybek. She spoke to Matt Hewson about what she hopes to achieve over the next 18 months.

Geelongs newest councillor Sarah Hathway will represent the residents of Windermere Ward following a countback by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) on Wednesday, June 28.

Cr Hathway was widely considered the favourite having received the third highest number of primary votes in the 2020 council election behind former councillor Grzybek and current deputy mayor Anthony Aitken.

An active Socialist Alliance member, Cr Hathway said she was genuinely excited when the countback confirmed she had been elected to the role.

I had the third highest primary vote from the 2020 election, so I thought I was maybe 80 per cent of the way there, but because that election was held during COVID we didnt have scrutineers in the room to see how the preferences were flowing, she said.

So even the night before (the countback) Id started talking myself out of it; if the preferences didnt go to me it would be someone else.

A resident of Geelong since early childhood, Cr Hathway has lived in Corio and Norlane for the better part of five years and currently works four days a week in Corio-based community mental health service as a social work graduate.

She has been an active participant in community groups involved in climate change awareness and other social issues, including the recent library and pool closure protests.

Cr Hathway said her professional, personal and municipal lives were all centred on the Corio and Norlane community.

Im not going to be ignoring any parts of Windermere Ward, but my heart really lies with Norlane and Corio, thats the area Im familiar with, she said.

Obviously there are a lot of barriers and areas of disadvantage in that community, but I think there are a lot of really amazing strengths as well.

So this is a really good opportunity to have this platform to go back to residents and say how do we use this platform as a community for the next less than 18 months until the next election.

It gives an opportunity to be a voice that otherwise Norlane and Corio perhaps wouldnt have.

Cr Hathway said her focus would be on supporting and re-enfranchise those experiencing disadvantage and working to increase civic education in her ward.

There are a lot of people out there who have issues or grievances who dont know where to go, or how to get any of that addressed, she said.

As much as possible (Ill) do what I can to link them with the right support, knock some of those barriers down, and where people dont have the confidence or capacity to be their own voice (I need to) go, right, Ive got this position, Ill make sure I use it.

Every effort made to save Seven Mile Beach whale "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Whale strandings, like the one that occurred at Seven Mile Beach last weekend, are likely to become more common because of the growth in the east coast humpback population, a rescue and research organisation says.

The stranding and subsequent death of the 30-tonne mammal produced widespread distress and concern within the local community, including questions about why the stranding occurred, and what was done to try and save it.

In an interview with ABC North Coast on Monday morning, Skippy Love from the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA), said there were likely to be more such incidents in the future.

As youre seeing the increasing numbers, which is fantastic to see as part of the [populations] recovery, youre going to see increased cases of strandings, Ms Love said....

Vallee's "Forbidden Science: Volume 5" - items re the DIA and BAASS "IndyWatch Feed National"

I am continuing my re-reading of Jacques Vallee's book "Forbidden Science: Volume 5" and find small items of information which I have not read about anywhere else. They may well be small items of limited interest to others, but I document them here for future reference.

Item 1: A DIA UFO Collection Project?

Vallee, in a diary entry dated 26 March 2004, speaking of Dr. Eric W. Davis writes:

"Eric developed other sources, notably a former DIA senior officer who confirmed that DIA had a UFO collection project at one time. He promised to provide more information but died before they could meet again. His secretary found an envelope inside his desk sealed and addressed to Eric. It contained the man's notes about the project, and the real source of the fake MJ-12papers, with which the field of ufology remains fascinated. The story I was told is this: In 1961 the UFO Project inside the government, was taken over by DIA. By the early 1980's Rear Admiral E. A. Burkhalter, Jr. who was Chief of Staff and acting assistant vice director in the Directorate for Collection Management and his deputy Col. Roy K. Jonkers, USAF, were in charge of the project. They are shown in these positions on an org chart dated March 1981. The same document shows Dr. Jack Vorona as assistant vice-director for Scientific and Technical intelligence.

Burkhalter, calling himself 'Mister X' and a man named Polko, introduced as 'Falcon' decided to spread disinformation about UFOs. Apparently, Dale Graff, who monitored Hal's project on behalf of DIA, wasn't in the know. The remake of the Sandler-Emenegger documentary in which I participated was he correct platform, with the Norton episode, but when Pentagon P.R. man Colonel Coleman told us to 'go out on a limb' to draw out controversial revelations, I fortunately convinced Hynek we shouldn't take the bait.

Tuohy to break Irish record "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Zach Tuohy just wanted to play one game of AFL football when he arrived from Ireland in 2009.

Initially picked up by Carlton in the 2010 rookie draft, Tuohy went on to play 120 games with the Blues before requesting a trade to Geelong.

On Sunday, Tuohy will rack up his 145th game with the Cats and his 265th overall, overtaking the great Jim Stynes for the record for most VFL/AFL games played by an Irish-born footballer.

Stynes played for Melbourne from 1987 to 1998, became club president and co-founded the youth charity The Reach Foundation, and was given a Victorian state funeral after dying of cancer in 2012, aged just 45.

Tuohy said he almost felt guilty at breaking Stynes record.

I dont think I appreciated the significant impact he had on the game or his legacy post-career, he said.

I only got to appreciate that when I came out (to Australia). The good thing is, with more and more Irish guys and girls coming out, his legacy is getting much more publicity back home.

I must admit, I was blown away to see how significant a character he was.

I think its probably mostly because I dont really feel like I belong in Jims category as a player and obviously not in terms of legacy so its a strange one to feel that Im now kind of on par with him in games.

The Cats face North Melbourne on Sunday at GMHBA Stadium and while they are currently ninth on the ladder, Tuohy said they could still do some damage in September.

Weve had some challenges with personnel, weve got some new guys into the side and weve just underperformed at different stages, he said.

Fortunately for us it feels a little bit like weve been here before where we havent played our best footy for the first half or first two-thirds of the season and come home pretty strong.

I think if you look across the competition right now, theres obviously a few strong teams but it does feel like if you just get there this year you could really cause a big shake up.

Reserve Bank ignorant to truth behind Australia's inflation "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The Reserve Bank is blaming our soaring inflation on wage pressure, whereas economists argue the real reason is excess corporate profits. Dr Evan Jones reports.

IN LATE FEBRUARY 2023, Jim Stanford, director of the Centre for Future Work (within the Australia Institute), published a study on the evolution of factor incomes in Australia since December 2019. Stanford published a summary here.

During this latter period, corporate profits arising from discretionary price markups have surged, far greater than can be associated with real economic growth and not a product of productivity rises. Thus, Stanford claims, inflation in Australia since the pandemic reflects a profit-price dynamic, rather than a wage-price dynamic. Stanford notes that the Reserve Bank of Australias (RBA) February 2023 Statement on Monetary Policy mentions wages 75 times and profits once.

The RBA responded by claiming that significant price increases were confined to the resources sector, whose prices are determined by impersonal forces (supply and demand) in global markets. Nothing to see here, as this huge presence in the Australian economy is apparently outside the authorities concern or control.

Except it has been a conscious policy decision to not implement a national domestic gas reservation policy that would have restrained prices. Western Australia has had a formal gas reservation policy since 2006, recently ardently defended by ex-Premier...

Antidepressants Can Cause Chemical Castration "IndyWatch Feed National"

From Maryanne Demasi Reports: Antidepressants can cause severe, sometimes irreversible, sexual dysfunction that persists even after discontinuing the medication. Sufferers have described it as chemical castration a type of genital mutilation caused by antidepressants, mainly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The condition is known as post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD), a condition largely unrecognised, and the true incidence of which is unknown.

David Healy, psychiatrist and founder of RxISK.org said, I saw my first patient with PSSD in 2000, a 35-year-old lady who told me that three months after stopping treatment, she could rub a hard-bristled brush across her genitals and feel nothing. Josef Witt-Doerring, psychiatrist and former FDA medical officer said, This condition is so devastating that it will cause serious changes to your life and to those around you.

It happened to Rosie

In 2020, during protracted Covid lockdowns in Melbourne, 23-year-old Rosie Tilli felt an increasing sense of anxiety and depression. Her psychiatrist prescribed a low dose of Lexapro (escitalopram), an SSRI to help Rosie calm down, assuring her that if she experienced side effects, theyd go away once she stopped the medication. Soon after taking the medication Rosie felt emotionally blunted, but took it as a positive sign. At first, I thought it was great because it felt like the medication was working. But then I couldnt feel my emotions, I couldnt cry, I had no sexual desire, and my genitals went numb.

After four months, Rosie decided to slowly wean herself off the medication. Some of her symptoms improved and the fog lifted, but over the next two years her libido faded to nothing. It has been two years of hell. Now, I have no sexual function. Im numb down there. I cant have an orgasm. It feels like my soul has just been vacuumed out of my body. I feel completely asexual, said Rosie. She sought help from various professionals, but none believed it could be the antidepressant because the drug had already left her system. They concluded it was all in her mind.

Rosie went to a local youth centre for help, but they ended up sectioning her under the Mental Health Act with an Involuntary Treatment Order, insisting she take antipsychotic medication. I refused to take an antipsychotic because I knew I wasnt psychotic. Instead, they forced me to take another antidepressant against my will in order to leave the facility, said Rosie. The following update is now a month old, but it does show how the offensive that Kyiv s supposed to have launched went into reverse, proving it a monumental failure, despite newly supplied armour and weapons from NATO.

Failure on the battlefield caused huge losses in human life and equipment. KIev is reputed to have lost about three battalions of soldiers.

The Russians appear to have had significant losses as well, though not on the scale of Kyiv, and they have successfully repelled the offensive.

Those who want to know the truth must see the claimed evidence coming from both sides and draw conclusions from this. This video is worth watching for an insight into what is going on.

More voices are calling for peace. This is a recognition that the only way to stop the war is through negotiation.

News in the west insists that the offensive is still on, although reporting on events is muted.

The fighting soon shifted away front the dividing line between the two armies. It is not over yet. Skirmishes continue in some pockets, although the main battle form from the Kyiv side is the launching of missiles and some attacks on civilians in Russian territory.

Kyiv still has capacity to continue for some time, although not enough to turn this so-called offensive around.

Nor does NATO have the ability to supply Ukraine with the equipment and ammunition to sustain operations for any length of time or to hold gained territory against a Russian counter-offensive.

Goldman Sachs has stated that Western countries may need over $25 billion in investments to match Chinas supply of rare earths. The concern arises from Beijings export restrictions on minor metals, leading to fears that rare earths could be the next target. Currently, China accounts for 90% of global refined output of rare earths, and Europe and the U.S. are eager to reduce their dependence on Chinese supply. Chinas recent decision to impose export restrictions on two minor metals used in semiconductors and electric vehicles has further intensified concerns about the availability of rare earths. China dominates the production of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr), with over 70% of global mining and over 90% of downstream metal and magnet production. This year, Chinas NdPr output is expected to reach around 50,000 tons, up from 34,000 tons in 2021. As a result, the market has moved into surplus, prompting Goldman Sachs to lower price forecasts for NdPr. According to the banks estimates, it would cost the West between $15 billion and $30 billion to replicate Chinas annual output of 50,000 tons of ND PR.

Yesterday saw the first day of the 2023 Skullcandy Oz Grom Open at Lennox Head with what organisers says was a stellar day of competition, as surfers in the age divisions got the opportunity to revel in clean and playful three-foot surf.

Fresh off a recent victory at the Occy Grom Comp on the Gold Coast, Hunter Anderson (Palm Beach, Qld) carried his same momentum into his opening Under-16 Boys heat at Lennox Head, smashing an array of gigantic backside snaps in the punchy surf to seal himself a position into the third round. Anderson showed seamless flow in his heat to post a giant 15.53 two-wave heat total (out of a possible 20 points) to move through the heat alongside Josh Kelly (Noosa Heads, Qld) who finished in the runner-up spot.

Jesse Fergusson (Noosa, Qld) also showed he would be one to watch in the Under-16 Boys, nailing a solid 15.60 two-wave heat total to earn his position straight into the third round, bypassing the do-or-die second-round requalification.

We want the forest but fear the spirits: labour mobility predicaments in Samoa, part one "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

This three-part Professor Meleisea at the 2023 Pacific Update, on 15 June.

Since 2007, Samoans have become aware that those returning from seasonal work often have the means to build modern houses, to buy cars and furniture and home appliances, and to give large donations to their churches. Having money for these things raises the social and economic status of their families in a hierarchical society.

Evidence of the desperation to earn money from seasonal work was demonstrated in 2021, when thousands of anxious Samoan men and women tried to crowd into a church hall where registration was being held, accidently breaking its windows and doors.

The dilemma of labour mobility was expressed at a welcome home event for seasonal workers in Samoa last year. Our Prime Minister Fiam Naomi Mataafa told the assembled young men and women and their families, I want Samoa to be a place where our people want to live.

If you will excuse my clich, the government can be said to be between a rock and a hard place. In other words, Samoa wants prosperity without losing its most capable people, but at the same time it wants prosperity that cannot be afforded by working in Samoa. Or, as the Samoan proverbial expressions put it, we want the trees in the forest but are afraid of their spirits (E manao I le vao ae o loo mamalu mai le aitu I le aoa), or we want yams but we are afraid of the work of digging up stones so we can plant them (E manao e le ufi ae fefe I le papa). The government is concerned about the increasing expectation among Samoan people that labour migration is the only means of achieving a better life.

As of early 2023, Samoa had five labour mobility schemes under government supervision and regulation. The schemes have been framed by both the receiving and sending governments from a win-win perspective, intended to assist the sectors in New Zealand and Australia experiencing labour shortages, and at the same time assist unemployed Samoans and other Pacific Islanders to earn money, acquire job skills, and accumulate savings to send home to improve standards of living and economic development.

Of these schemes, one supplied a small number of semi-skilled workers for construction work through the New Zealand Canterbury Trade Employment Initiative; another supplied meat workers to a New Zealand meat packing company. But far larger were the schemes on which many thousands of Samoans have gone aboard to work.

Leading US think tank admits Russia unlikely to ever run out of missiles "IndyWatch Feed National"

For approximately a year and a half, we have been listening to tall tales about Russia running out of munitions of various kinds due to its supposed inability to produce advanced weapons, particularly long-range missiles and other sorts of PGMs (precision-guided munitions). According to mainstream propaganda, Moscow is allegedly so desperate that it had to arm its soldiers with shovels and resort to the expropriation of washing machines, smartphones, laptops and other devices that contain microchips in order to maintain production. Such ludicrous claims would never be accepted by anyone remotely familiar with how advanced military technologies work.

However, they are an important segment of the rabidly Russophobic infowar that aims to present the Eurasian giant as supposedly technologically backward. And yet, after Moscows long-range and tactical aviation, as well as naval and ground-based units, spent the entire special military operation (SMO) launching high-precision strikes by using advanced PGMs that quite literally nobody else has (the United States included), the mainstream propaganda machine simply had to admit something was seriously off with their assessment of Russias technological and industrial capacity. The latter should have been destroyed by Western sanctions close to a year and a half ago.

And yet, its still standing. The answer as to why this is the case was recently given by CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies), a Washington DC-based think tank that is among the most prominent ones in the US. According to their assessment, Moscow is extremely unlikely to run out of PGMs and other long-range high-precision weapons, either for itself or its numerous export customers. Somewhat surprisingly, with no ambiguity or sugarcoating, Ian Williams, a Fellow of the International Security Program and Deputy Director of the Missile Defense Project at CSIS, has made it perfectly clear that it would be unrealistic to expect Russia to ever run out of missiles.

However, opinions around such cultural events in the workplace are mixed, with some First Nations academics saying Indigenous people are expected to bear the brunt of planning and educating non-indigenous people during these events and culture relations and often without added pay.

A recent survey further highlights 39% of First Nations participants said they carry the burden of additional cultural load in the form of extra work demands.

When the Reptilian Brain Drives the Political Bus "IndyWatch Feed National"

The constant obsessing with Hunter Biden as if this man matters, given the very real threats our society faces what is that actually about? Well, more than mere tribalism or confirmation bias on the right. Its symptomatic of a deeper and broader illness.

To be sure, those who condemn Hunter Bidens behavior (and allege special treatment) seem to ignore the financial corruption, debauchery, and far worse by a legion of right-wing leaders, movement heroes, pastors, etc. where no accountability is typically the rule, not the exception. Including the children of the immediate past president, to say nothing of the former guy himself. As someone tweeted in response to a posting I did on Hunter derangement:

Hunter has never been in politics. Ivanka and Jared made 300+ million in salary as advisors not to mention 2 billion from the Saudis and why no one is investigating that is beyond me.

So, why make so much of Hunters offenses, which are really inconsequential in the greater scheme of things, and ever so slight in comparison with the monumental outrages of so many right-wingers?

What Lies Beneath

To find the answer to this mystery, we need to lift the lid on the human skull and have a look at the wiring inside. By wiring I refer to a specific feature of anatomy that may provide at least part of the explanation: the reptilian brain. Carl Sagan described it well:

Deep inside the skull of every one of us there is something like a brain of a crocodile which evolved tens of millions of years ago. It is a major source of our moods and emotions. Is Fast Fashion Making Us Sick? "IndyWatch Feed National"

On a recent spring afternoon, journalist Alden Wicker was examining a neon orange purse at H&M. The price tag read $14.99, but instead of listing materials, it simply said vegan. She raised an eyebrow. At Wickers request, a store clerk looked up the materials: polyurethane and polyester. Plastics.

For the last decade, Wicker has been covering the dirty side of fast fashion from its contribution to the climate crisis and greenwashing to multi-level marketing schemes. She founded the popular blog EcoCult in 2013 and has become an authority on sustainable fashion.

Wickers new book, To Dye For: How Toxic Fashion Is Making Us Sick, examines the public health impacts of chemically-treated fabrics and synthetic fibers. She spent two years interviewing.

She found that fashion is rife with toxic chemicals, like formaldehyde and chromium, which are both carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting polyfluoroalkyl substances (also known as PFAS, or forever chemicals), linked to infertility and other health issues. And despite the potential harm, she discovered that the US has done little to protect consumers from the clothes they wear.

RAAF Search and Rescue (CHC Helicopters) Agusta AW139 Helicopter VH-SYV "Choppa 42" Arrives into Rockhampton Airport - Plus More! "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

On Wednesday 5 July, CHC Helicopters Australia / Lloyd Helicopters Agusta AW139 helicopter VH-SYV was noted arriving into Rockhampton Airport from Townsville.

The normally Northern Territory-based rescue helicopter arrived as "Choppa 42" and has been in Townsville since mid-June operating in a support role for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Exercise High Sierra 23-1 which has wrapped up this week.

UPDATE! On Thursday 6 July, VH-SYV "Choppa 42" continued from Rockhampton Airport to RAAF Base Amberley.

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday 5 July, the visiting Helicorp (Toll) Leonardo S.P.A. Helicopters (Agusta) AW139 helicopter VH-XIU was noted completing a flight from Rockhampton Airport to Townsend Island as "Rescue 903" (due to a clerical error!) and then back via a circuit of the Rockhampton Base Hospital as "Rescue 902" (as it should be!).

Townsville Airlines Cessna 208 Caravan VH-NXU First Visit into CQ at the Labona Station Airstrip - Plus More! "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

On Tuesday 4 July, it was interesting to note that Townsville Airlines Cessna 208 Caravan VH-NXU has (possibly?) made its first ever visit into Central Queensland, flying into the Labona Station Airstrip within Adani Australia's (Bravus Mining & Resources) Carmichael Coal Mine site from Cairns and then Townsville. It then returned to those places.

VH-NXU was delivered and registered to Townsville Airlines in September 2022. It was previously registered as N406CR. VH-NXU seems to mostly operate out of Cairns Airport so if this is indeed its first visit to the region, it is a welcome sight!

Meanwhile, also on Tuesday 4 July, some of the 'usual' FIFO charter flights included Southern Air Beech 1900 VH-YSO visiting Moranbah Airport once again. It arrived from Latrobe Valley and Bourke Dubbo and then departed back to Latrobe Valley and then eventually to Melbourne (Moorabbin).

DeGunst Transport P/L Textron (Cessna) 208 Caravan VH-NPZ operated from Bundaberg Airport and looked to fly in and out of Mackay Airport. I presume the inclement weather in the area prevented it from landing at Nebo Aerodrome.

While Hinterland Aviation Cessna 208 Caravan VH-TFS also encountered bad weather and was unable to land at Mackay Airport while flying down from Townsville as HND2290. It returned to Townsville without landing and obviously was unable to complete its usual run out to Labona.

The Queensland Police Service (Airwing) (State of Queensland) Raytheon B1900D VH-PSK flew down from Cairns and Townsville to Rockhampton Airport. It then continued to Brisbane before later returning to Rockhampton Airport and then back to Cairns direct.

Man charged over shots fired in South Murwillumbah "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

New South Wales Police say a man will appear in court tomorrow charged following an investigation into an alleged public-place shooting.

At about 12.30am today (Thursday, 6 July), emergency services were called to an address on Prospero Street, South Murwillumbah, following reports of gun shots.

Police say officers attached to Tweed-Byron Police District attended and established a number of shots had been discharged into a property. There were no reports of injuries.

Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, a 35-year-old man was arrested at a home on Hall Drive, Murwillumbah, about 12pm today.

He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with possess shortened firearm without authority, armed with intent commit indictable offence, fire firearm at dwelling-house with disregard for safety, use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, and stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Tweed Heads Local Court tomorrow (Friday, 7 July).

Fukushima: Anxiety and anger over Japans nuclear waste water plan "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

A controversial plan by Japan to release treated waste water from the Fukushima nuclear plant has sparked anxiety and anger at home and abroad.

Since the 2011 tsunami which severely damaged the plant, more than a million tonnes of treated waste water has accumulated there. Japan now wants to start discharging it into the Pacific Ocean.

The UN nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has published a report endorsing Japans plan.

But since it was announced two years ago, the plan has been deeply controversial in Japan with local communities expressing concerns about contamination.

Fishing and seafood industry groups in Japan and the wider region have also voiced concerns about their livelihoods, as they fear consumers will avoid buying seafood.

And Tokyos neighbours are not happy either. China has been the most vocal, accusing Japan of treating the ocean as its private sewer. On Tuesday it criticised the IAEA report, saying its conclusions were one-sided.

So what is Japans plan and how exactly has it churned the waters?

What does Japan plan to do with the nuclear waste?

Since the disaster, power plant company Tepco has been pumping in water to cool down the Fukushima nuclear reactors fuel rods. This means every day the plant produces contaminated water, which is stored in massive tanks.

More than 1,000 tanks have been filled, and Japan says this is not a sustainable long-term solution. It wants to gradually release this water into the Pacific Ocean over the next 30 years, insisting it is safe to be discharged.

Releasing treated waste water into the ocean is a routine practice for nuclear plants but given that this is the by-product of an accident, this is no ordinary nuclear waste.

Tepco filters the Fukushima water through its Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS), which reduces most radioactive substances to acceptable safety standards, apart from tritium and carbon-14.

The weapons industry is a major contributor to these idea factories; a recent report from the Quincy Institute (6/1/23) demonstrates just how much influence war profiteers have on the national discourse.

The Quincy Institutewhose own start-up funding came mainly from George Soros and Charles Kochlooked at 11 months of Ukraine War coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, from March 1, 2022, through January 31, 2023, and counted each time one of 33 leading think tanks was mentioned. Germanys shutdown of nuclear power plants in April did not result in a
ramp-up of lignite-fired power plants, despite concerns. Instead, there has
been a significant increase in the share of renewables in the electricity
mix, and the proportion of coal-generated electricity has fallen by more
than 20%.

Electricity in Germany has become cheaper and cleaner since its
last three nuclear power plants were shut down, according to new data from
the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. Net electricity
production from lignite and hard coal has decreased by more than 20%, while
natural gas has experienced a minor decline.

In contrast, renewables have
reached a record share of 57.7% of net electricity generation. According to
Fraunhofer ISE, the German energy system successfully managed the nuclear
phase-out. The decommissioned reactors reduced output was offset by lower
consumption, decreased exports, and increased imports.

A Chinese Mining Company Has Opened a Giant Lithium Processing Plant in Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) A Chinese mining company formally opened a $300 million lithium processing plant Wednesday in Zimbabwe, which has one of the worlds largest reserves of the metal as demand surges globally because of its use in electric car batteries.

Zimbabwe has the largest lithium reserves in Africa and has in recent years drawn investors in battery minerals from Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, although China is the dominant player.

The plant opened by Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, an arm of Chinese company Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, has a capacity to process 4.5 million metric tons of hard rock lithium into concentrate for export per year, Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa said.

Mnangagwa was present for the official opening of the sprawling plant in Goromonzi, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of Zimbabwes capital, Harare.

Lithium is the mineral of the present and the future ... and value addition will position our country as an emerging and competitive player in the global lithium value chain, Mnangagwa said. He urged the company to beef up expertise that would help Zimbabwe and other southern African countries eventually manufacture lithium batteries and other components locally.

Lithium is a key component for electric vehicle batteries. To cash in on demand, Zimbabwe last year banned the export of raw lithium ore. In doing so, it joined countries like Indonesia and Chile that are trying to maximize their return on deposits of lithium, cobalt and nickel by requiring miners to invest locally in refining and processing before they can export.

Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe deputy general manager Trevor Barnard said that the firm aims to start by processing 450,000 tons of concentrate every year. The concentrate will be further processed into battery-grade lithium outside Zimbabwe.
