Die Polizei hat das Handy des Thringer CDU-Chefs ... "IndyWatch Feed National"

Was genau soll das heien?

South African group sues government for Covid-19 vaccines contract details "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

28 July, 2023: Despite widespread calls for transparency, to this day, nearly all publicly funded Covid-19 vaccine procurement contracts remain confidential. This lack of transparency has been criticised as one of the most significant barriers to vaccine equity, a violation of international human rights standards and, often, a breach of domestic transparency regulation.

A 2019 report by Transparency International found that only 7% of Covid contracts have been made publicly available, of those that have been released, most of the crucial information has been redacted.

Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) have prevented governments from releasing details of their Covid-19 vaccine deals. This protects the interests of vaccine companies and means that the details of high prices of vaccines and rules that give these companies monopoly rights to keep charging these prices for 20 years. While NDAs are relatively common practice in medical contracts, the level of secrecy required for Covid-19 deals is unprecedented. Pharmaceutical companies conditioned release of vaccines on signing NDAs, leaving even powerful nation blocs like the European Union with little choice but to sign.

In response to the multiple reports of corruption in health procurement and misuse of pandemic response funds, South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has promised greater transparency. However, non-profit group, Health Justice Initiative is arguing that this has yet to be delivered. It is taking the government to court to find out the details of South Africas procurement of publicly funded Covid-19 vaccines.

Health Justice Initiative joined the criticism of Covid-19 procurement NDAs for enabling pharmaceutical companies to set prices. AstraZeneca reportedly sold vaccines to South Africa at 2.5 times the price per dose that European governments paid.

NDAs can also include secret indemnity for any health risks that arise from the vaccine injections, including possibly against negligence, and redact delivery schedules, protecting big pharmaceutical companies from liability. With no transparency about exactly what the NDAs include, it is hard to assess the reasonableness of the terms.

Retail sector is cooked; homebuilding inflationary pressures falling "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Producer price pressures plunge

Not a big surprise, given what's been reported by card trackers, but retail turnover fell -0.8 per cent in June, and remains lower than it was last year (in spite of high population growth).

Clothing and footwear retail fell -2.2 per cent, food retailing was down marginally, and department store turnover fell by a savage -5 per cent.

It's not looking great out there in retail land, with consumers suddenly snapping their wallets shut.

The retail volumes figures aren't out yet, but it looks like a significant contraction of around -0.5 per cent for the June quarter.

Australia might dodge a recession, with the Q1 national accounts showing a very narrow growth in GDP of 0.2 per cent.

But in per capita terms, of course, we already are in recession.

In another soft data release, producer prices increased only +0.5 per cent in Q2, the lowest increase since March 2021.

Bride kidnapping a terrifying violation of human rights "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Bride kidnapping a terrifying violation of human rights

Bride kidnapping, the horrific practice of abducting women into marriage, still takes place in regions of the world and is an affront to human rights, writes Johanna Higgs.

THE SMALL and very dusty town of Murghab, Tajikistan, is snuggled inside the Pamir Mountains where the Pamir Highway crosses the Bartang river. Its remote, dusty and cold. Most of the local population are ethnic Kyrgyzs and live mostly in houses made of mud-brick and whitewash. Remnants of its Soviet past remain and the surroundings are barren and windswept, with yaks and sheep grazing along the river banks. The climate is harsh and unpredictable.

As a woman travelling alone through the region, I was astoundingly uncomfortable. The men were lecherous and rude and each time I stepped out into public felt like running a gauntlet of sleaze. I felt the harshness of life for women and the difficulties that they must endure living in this part of the world. I was only passing through and it felt unbearable.

Indeed, violence and discrimination against women is a hidden epidemic in Tajikistan, a country where many women live in fear of their husbands and relatives. From beatings and rapes to forced marriages, women face a range of abuses that violate their human rights and dignity.

Yet, like in far too much of the world, many women remain silent and suffer in isolation, as the society and the state fail to protect them and hold the perpetrators accountable.

It was for this reason that I had come to Tajikistan, to learn more about the situation of violence against women within the country as part of my global quest to generate more attention to violence and discrimination against women and girls.

In Tajikistan, while it was clear that the situation for women and girls was far from perfect, one of the more unique horrors in this part of the world is bride kidnapping...

With the hole in the bucket man going AWOL this day, the pond thought it might take the chance to do a detour and a pleasant distraction.

Usually the pond only approaches former politicians via the simpering and pandering reptiles, but a friend sent the pond a link to a Graudian story ...Australia must confront four megatrends that are causing rapid global disruption.

Uh huh. Perforce the pond had to read it, if only to pretend that the pond was paying attention and waddya know:

Today we face four megatrends that are driving rapid and disruptive changes, and which will greatly affect our nation, the region and the world.
These pre-date Covid and are likely to continue well after the pandemic. They are technological advances, shifts in geopolitical and economic power, backlash against globalisation and climate change.

Do tell, at least on the matter of climate change ...

...My fourth and final megatrend is climate change. This is the drive for carbon emissions reduction and renewable energy and a transition away from fossil fuels.
Australia has already experienced the extremes of climate-related challenges, but it is a nation historically dependent upon plentiful supplies of cheap fossil fuels to provide baseload power. As researchers from The Australian National University remind us, we have the tools to meet this challenge but we must act with more urgency.
I am confident Australia can play a useful role in shaping responses to the negative effects of each of these four megatrends.

Julie Bishop is Chancellor of The Australian National University and was Australias first female foreign minister. This is an edited extract of her speech delivered at the National Press Club.

The pond confesses it had no idea that Bishop still carried on carrying on, but was pleased she'd found a nice sinecure in academia and can suck up to the splendid profs and researchers at ANU ...

As for the rest, the pond drifted back in time, as you can if you look to Trove or to the Wayback Machine ...

Democracy takes poll position in Timor-Leste "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Democracy takes poll position in Timor-Leste

When it comes to elections, Timor-Leste and its system of voting has given its citizens a reason to feel excited about democracy, writes GJ Burchall.

THE FIRST OF MANY things that strike you at polling places in Timor-Leste is the total lack of assaults on voters by how-to-vote card boosters  the sort that swarm all over Australian voters like demented, malaria-lugging mosquitos.

Party flags, banners and shills must keep at a respectful 25-metre distance. Ditto the automatic weapons.

It was different in the weeks leading up to election day. Rival flags were flown outside houses and shops, adorned cars, mikrolets and motorbikes (some pillion riders even wore large flags as capes, which made them look like party superheroes as they shot past).

Parties were assigned rally days on a clogged campaign calendar and allocated streets over which they could string their pennons. All day and into the early evening, traffic on main thoroughfares was blocked by trundling trucks, whose open trays carried mobs of chanting, flag-flapping youths.

In Australia, not only is truck-bed travelling banned, but youd struggle to find this level of election enthusiasm.

This is, no doubt, due to its compulsory, chore-like, non-democratic, fine-threat essence. Timor-Leste, in contrast, unable to vote for 500 years, has warmly embraced the activity. Voting is not compulsory, yet they can boast regular turnouts of over 80 per cent from 860,000 registered voters, even if some must travel great distances to do so.

Your mission is to observe the election, iterated the agent at the official briefing:

Youve all studied the protocol manual, so you know how things are supposed to run. If you do see any breaches by electoral officers, under no circumstances engage: do not interfere or try to correct them. Just make a note, stick it in your report.

Elon Musk: The mad megarich Twitter owner: FLASHBACK 2022 "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Elon Musk: The mad megarich Twitter owner: FLASHBACK 2022

Ever since purchasing Twitter late last year, Elon Musk has puzzled the world with increasingly insane behaviour. Now that he's rebranding the social media platform simply as 'X', it's time to revisit this article by David Donovan, who analysed the madness of Musk.

IN THE PANTHEON of megarich weirdos Zuckerberg, Trump et al one wacky oddball towers above all the rest. His name is Elon Musk and, in case you just woke up from a long coma, he recently bought social media platform Twitter for the tidy sum of US$44 billion (AU$65.7 billion).

And then, with all the grace and good manners of a mentally deranged octopus falling out of a tree, proceeded to attack the value of his asset in a variety of new and unexpected ways. Advertisers and users have been deserting in floods, while regulators and creditors circle this apparently sinking ship.

Meanwhile, Musk has been continuing to make far-reaching decisions about the platform on a daily basis, only to reverse most of them the very next day. And all the while tweeting and tweeting, and tweeting and tweeting increasingly absurd and inane idiocies.

Is he on drugs? Has he entirely lost his mind? Or is he just king of the super wealthy weirdos, doing whatever the hell he wants, as he has always done, as he has always felt entitled to do?

Read on to discover the truth behind this rather strange fellow and his unseemly new dalliance with social media.

WHO IS ELON MUSK?

The first thing to note about Elon Musk is that he is an entirely self-made man...

Just kidding!

Musk, in fact, was born into a super-wealthy Afrikaans/Pennsylvania Dutch/Canadian family in South Africa in 1971 and since then has just gotten richer! He is listed by Forbes magazine and...

Freedom of Information Act - Moderna, Pfizer "IndyWatch Feed National"

As a result of Defending the Republics (DTR) successful Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) litigation against the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), we are excited to announce that we are releasing nearly 15,000 pages of documents relating to testing and adverse events associated with Modernas COVID-19 vaccine Spikevax.

DTR filed its FOIA lawsuit after the FDA denied the expedited production of Moderna COVID-19 records, stating there was no compelling need or urgency for the public to review this information. This spring, DTR reached an agreement with the FDA for the production of approximately 24,000 pages of some of the most important records submitted by Moderna in support of its Biologics License Application (BLA). This is the first part of that production. Later this year the FDA will produce approximately 8,000 more pages of Moderna documents.

These documents are the first significant release of data from Modernas COVID-19 clinical trials. They reveal the causes of deaths, serious adverse events, and instances of neurological disorders (such as Bells Palsy and Shingles) potentially associated with Modernas COVID-19 vaccine.

Importantly, these records also demonstrate the utter lack of thoroughness of these studies. Many of those who died after receiving the Moderna vaccine were not given an autopsy. According to one study, 16 individuals died after being administered the Moderna vaccine.  The studys authors indicated that out of those 16 deaths, only two autopsies were performed, five of the dead were not autopsied, and the autopsy status of nine of the dead was unknown.

One country at a time "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Ghana has abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes:

Ghana has become the 29th country in Africa to abolish the death penalty in a move hailed by human rights activists.

The decision means that the 176 people currently on death row, including six women, are likely to have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.

On Tuesday, Ghanas parliament voted to amend the countrys criminal offences act, removing the use of capital punishment for crimes including murder, genocide, piracy and smuggling.

The death sentence can still be given for acts of high treason, and campaigners cautioned that the countrys constitution would have to change for a complete removal of the penalty.

And hopefully that will happen soon. But this takes capital punishment off the table in almost all circumstances, and it is something to be welcomed.

More wealth tax trouble for Labour "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Last month the Greens released their tax policy, pushing for a wealth tax to end poverty. Today, Te Pti Mori followed suit, releasing an even more progressive proposal:

Te Pti Mori released its tax policy on Thursday, going into Octobers election. It joined the Green Partys call for a tax-free income threshold and a wealth tax but Te Pti Mori went a step further.

Te Pti Mori pushed for a range of new taxes, targeting landowners, the rich and the profits of foreign corporates. And, as Stuff revealed earlier, it included an income tax-free bracket up to $30,000, offset by higher taxes on higher incomes.

Waititi positioned the policy as a Robinhood-style reimagining of the tax system.

There's some magical thinking in Te Pti Mori's proposal, in the line about getting $7 billion in tax by funding the SFO to crack down on fraud. Its not that there's nothing there to be gained, or that massively increased SFO or IRD funding won't help cut criminal evasion, but it just sounds awfully like the infinite money the right thinks it can get from "reducing waste".

This is clearly going to mean coalition pain for Labour if they're in a position to form a government post-election. They're going to have to accept some form of wealth taxation and an increase in progressivity, or else try and form a coalition with National or ACT. Though as both of those parties seem closer to Labour's preferred position ATM, maybe they'll do that rather than work with their allies.

Gear Up for a Hot August! "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

If you think the worlds chaotic already, wait till next month.

It mightnt feel like it here in Australia. Maybe the unseasonably cold winter is keeping things under the lid.

Yes, therere increasing tensions here with The Voice campaigns.

But by global standards, its been quite civil. Its a sharp contrast to the open conflict in Ukraine, France, the Netherlands and other parts of the world.

For our sake, I hope things here wont get worse. It feels like society is hanging by a thread everywhere. It only takes something small to plunge everything into disarray.

Anger simmers and dissatisfaction boils over

Theres no denying the quickening pace at which events are developing.

I cant say it enough to hone in on the point.

Think about the latest civil unrest in France and the Netherlands over their Governments policies to impose further hardship upon their people.

In the case of France, it was about raising the retirement age.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands, it was about limiting the use of fertilisers that would threaten the livelihood of farmers. And disagreement between the parties in the coalition government over immigration limits became the final straw that caused its collapse.

Tensions boiled over in these countries, to the point where its made the headlines. Similar things are happening in the US, UK, Germany, Italy, and elsewhere. Its clear that the people are divided, and both proponents and opponents are willing to march and show their disapproval.

For many years, most Western governments have run massive budget deficits. This is driven by an ageing population, a service-based economy rather than one based on manufacturing, more government handouts (especially during the Wuhan virus outbreak), and politicians promising more benefits to secure the peoples votes. Consequently, the government increased taxes on businesses and households to make ends meet.

A hot-button issue has been the impact of man-made activities on the environment and climate. Proponents argue that certain choices we make as a society could devastate future generations. This has led to proposals to alter our lifestyle, some of which include significant spending to develop new technologies like renewable energy, battery technology and smart meters. And as youd expect, these are often subsidised by governments with taxpayers bearing the burden.

From a philosophical perspective, these policies sound reasonable, as its for the greater good. Everyone should theoretically do their part to make the world a better place.

So why the pushback from the people?

Drawn "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

A ballot for three Member's Bills was held today, and the following bills were drawn:

  • Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) (Provision of Breast Cancer Screening Services) Amendment Bill (Shane Reti)
  • New Zealand Bill of Rights (Right to Lawfully Acquired Property) Amendment Bill (Barbara Kuriger)
  • District Court (Protecting Judgment Debtors on Main Benefit) Amendment Bill (Anahila Kanongataa)

So it looks like ACT's propertarian radicalism is back, now being pushed by National. Which shows you how far right they've come in the last decade. And unfortunately the bill will be voted on by the next Parliament, which might have an ACT-National majority. Ugh.

There were 70 bills in the ballot, which is a pretty healthy number.

As climate crisis costs rise, who will pay? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Amy Goodman the host of Democracy now and Dennis Moynihan a bestselling author write (Common Dreams 24 July 2023) about the Important question of how the global burden of shifting away from fossil fuels should be shared., and that those countries that have historically contributed the most to putting carbon in the atmosphere should pay more and provide help to [poorer nations. Instead of doing this, they are still trying to push the cost onto others. They say global transition to renewable energy is going to be costly, but the cost of doing nothing would be far greater.

Record-shattering temperatures are baking the Northern Hemisphere, causing death, injury, and displacement. From China to Europe to the United States, regions are breaking not only high temperature records, but are also surpassing the record number of consecutive days of life-threatening heat. Phoenix, Arizona, passed 20 days with high temperatures above 110F. Massive rainstorms and typhoons are flooding cities and towns from India to southern China to New England. Raging Canadian wildfires are blanketing the eastern United States with thick smoke that can cause long-term respiratory damage.

The extreme weatheran increasingly frequent occurrence in our warming climateis having a major impact on human health, ecosystems, economies, agriculture, energy, and water supplies, World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Petteri Taalas commented on Wednesday, adding, We have to step up efforts to help society adapt to what is unfortunately becoming the new normal.

When Taalas says help society he isnt referring to any particular country; he means human society, globally. A truly effective solution to the climate crisis must be global, based on the rapid transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This transition is going to be costly, but the cost of doing nothing would be far greater. The question is, who is going to pay?

Countries like the United States and those of western Europe grew rich by burning fossil fuels with abandon for over a century, while poorer countries in the Global South, many now facing the worst impacts of climate change, have contributed negligibly to carbon levels in the atmosphere.

It has long been acknowledged inside the annual United Nations climate negotiations th...

In which it's a full to overflowing day with Killer, the grave Sexton, and the Bro, but first an apology ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Quick rewind.

Yesterday the pond ducked, weaved, dodged and refused to go there with Dame Slap.

At the time the pond felt a little guilty. Somebody's got to get down into the reptile cesspit and muck out. The pond was then mortified to discover that Charlie Lewis had done just that in Crikey, with Chewing on John Howards preferred cultural diet, (paywall) and the lede saying it all: "The Australian continues its grand tradition of portraying John Howard as the human expression of mainstream Australia's pre-political soul."

Gaily bedight, this gallant knight, in sunshine and in shadow, journeyed long to seek out the Dame Slap song ...

Opinion columnist Janet Albrechtsen marked John Howards 84th birthday today by talking of Australias cultural diet appropriately via the following word salad, which runs for 75 exhausting words without a break.
Even now, nearly 16 years after he lost office, Howards ability to take the national temperature may have something to do with an enduring divide in this country between a small but loud group of cultural dieticians on the one hand, and a much larger group of Australians who dont want to be lectured to by a group of elites who have fashioned themselves as moral guardians force-feeding ordinary folk their preferred cultural diet.
This continues The Australians grand tradition of portraying the former prime minister as the human expression of mainstream Australias pre-political soul. In so doing, the paper offers Howard, and Howard offers the paper, another chance to slam the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
Shouldnt we just be sitting down talking to each other? Not about the Voice, not about reparations, not about treaties, but just talking about how to lift up Aboriginal people, and put them in the mainstream of the community, finding out ways of doing it, he says, having arguably just listed three possible ways of lifting up Aboriginal people.
What really stood out to us in the Crikey bunker was the characterisation of Howard in opposition to those who have fashioned themselves as moral guardians force-feeding ordinary folk their preferred cultural diet. Youd never see Howard doing that. Except, of course
Charlie proceeded to offer some examples, a modest selection from a vast range provided by this ancient relic, now full blown irrelevant detritus, kicked out of his seat as well as being kicked out of government because everybody was well past being over him. The pond won't quote them all - those who can bypass the paywall can read the full piece, but at least a taster ...

...In 2004, Howard decided that his preferred cultural die...

Retrofit now for looming heat waves "IndyWatch Feed National"

Suggested retrofitting ideas include sealing around doors, windows and walls; improving or adding ceiling, wall and underfloor insulation. Photo Wikimedia

With the warmest week being recorded globally, RMITs Dr Trivess Moore is encouraging home owners to prepare.

Dr Moore said in a press release on Monday, Data from the past few weeks has highlighted we are at a critical and vulnerable point in time.

When it is cold, people dont think of preparing their homes for summer. But now is the time to act before we feel the effects of El Nio, which increases the risks of drought, heatwaves and bushfires.

The longer we delay delivering the type of housing required for a changing climatic future, the more costly it will be to retrofit poor quality and under-performing housing in the future.

Suggested retrofitting ideas include sealing up gaps and cracks around doors, windows and walls; improving or adding ceiling, wall and underfloor insulation.

Safety issues

Dr Moore adds, For those with a few practical skills, you can DIY but there are some safety issues to watch out for.

Investing in good quality blinds or curtains is also advised, for thermal comfort.

Red Hotel a historic example of the war on journalistic truth

Details of the disinformation war conducted by Joseph Stalin mirror the modern-day stifling of press freedom in times of war. Jim Kable reviews a fascinating new book by journalist and Russia expert Alan Philps.

WHILE READING The Red Hotel (The Untold Story of Stalins Disinformation War), I was travelling through Viet Nam and Cambodia, pondering over the lies and disinformation fed to a much younger and nave me and everyone else during the American War of the 1960s and 1970s, from jingoistic U.S. propaganda until My Lai and other aspects of the true nature of the U.S. war there began to filter through.

No plucky little South Viet Nam fighting a separate and big bad North, but an imperial U.S., bombing into neighbouring Cambodia and Laos. And Agent Orange, the effects of which are now passed down to third generations.

The War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels and in Cambodia, the mine clearance programs still ongoing across the country - the Killing Fields of the Pol Pot regime; S-21; and the Tuol Sleng Genocide/Torture Centre in Phnom Penh were all directly made possible by the U.S. bombing signed off for by Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon and written most movingly and recently about by Nick Turse.

Housing crisis brutal says social housing advocate "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

More than four in five renters are in housing stress, with homelessness the leading impact of the housing crisis, a report by national housing campaign Everybodys Home has revealed.

According to the advocacy group, based on surveys of almost 750 people, its Brutal Reality Report found that two thirds (67 per cent) of people are in housing stress; four in five (82 per cent) renters are in rental stress; three quarters (75 per cent) of people are scared about their financial security because of the housing crisis; and two thirds (66 per cent) of people are worried about their mental health and wellbeing.

An Everybodys Home spokesperson said, The report also surveyed housing and welfare organisations across Australia. Nine in ten (89 per cent) reported bigger and more complex workloads, while three in five (61 per cent) said their staff were experiencing burnout or leaving their roles due to the crisis.

Spokesperson, Maiy Azize, says they are calling for more social and affordable housing for people in extreme rental stress.

Our shortfall is so big that some people in our survey have been waiting for over a decade.

Social housing is the best way to free up cheaper rentals and boost the supply of affordable homes. The federal government must create 25,000 new homes each year to meet the social housing shortfall.

Our national, state and territory leaders must work to create a better deal for renters. Its time to end unfair rent increases and no-cause evictions for good.

The federal government has to also phase out unfair tax breaks for investors. People told us they want the government to fund homes for people in need, not investment vehicles that push prices up for everyone.

Meanwhile, public submissions into a federal Senate inquiry into the worsening rental crisis in Australia will be extended till August 4.

Inflation trending down

The ABS produces a handy chart, which helps to show the recent trends in inflation.

In March 2022, inflation increased by 2.2 per cent over a quarter, the largest increase in many a year.

But in the most recent quarters inflation has fallen from 1.9 per cent in December 2022, to 1.4 per cent in March 2023, to 0.8 per cent in June 2023.

Source: ABS

Next quarter a big quarter of inflation for September 2022 (1.8 per cent) will drop out of the annual figures, so we'll see another large drop in the inflation figures from 6 per cent to under 5 per cent.

Clearly policy settings are contractionary, and year on year consumer spending now appears to be in freefall.

Hence markets think that interest rate hikes are all but done in Australia.

Housing prices rose sharply in the June quarter on low stock numbers.

Price increase were led by a +5.3 per cent quarterly increase for houses in Sydney.

'We have never seen this': scientists baffled by behaviour of pilot whales before Western Australia mass stranding "IndyWatch Feed National"

Officials are baffled by the remarkable behaviour of a large pod of pilot whales that grouped together in a heart shape before stranding themselves on a remote Western Australian beach. Drone footage captured the moment the pod of almost 100 long-finned pilot whales moved tightly together before stranding themselves at Cheynes beach about 60km east of Albany on Tuesday evening. By Wednesday morning, more than 50 whales lay dead on the shore, with volunteers, government workers and scientists fighting to save 46 more. WA's environment minister, Reece Whitby, said researchers from across Australia were baffled by the never-before-seen behaviour of the whales in the hours leading up to the stranding.

ACTION ALERT ~ 20 Tons per Day Medical Waste Processing Set for Ravenswood Area "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Jackson County is hills and valleys including the Ohio River valley

Tell WV DAQ: Dont let out-of-state companies pollute hazardous waste in our communities!

Action Alert from the West Virginia Rivers Coalition, July 24, 2023

Thunder Mountain Environmental Services, an out-of-state company, is seeking an air permit to release emissions from a medical waste incinerator near Ravenswood, WV in Jackson County.

While few details are known about the impacts of waste-to-fuel operations, the draft permit indicates carcinogens will be released into the air if this waste-to-fuel incinerator is allowed to operate.

Moreover, there are many unanswered questions regarding how waste will be accepted, processed, and disposed of, leaving us in the dark about the full extent of its impacts.

The WVDEP Division of Air Quality is about to decide on the air permit. We encourage you to voice your about potential environmental impacts and health concerns for surrounding communities before the comment period closes on Thursday, July 27.

Join us in telling the WVDEP Division of Air Quality that we do not want an out-of-state company profiting from hauling in tons of toxic trash to pollute and dispose of in our communities.

In the town of Follansbee, West Virginians have already taken a stand against toxic facilities like this. We must follow their lead in Ravenswood, and anywhere our land, water, and environment are threatened.

Together, we can create a cleaner, safer, and healthier future for all.

July 26, 2023, House UAP Hearing Archive Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Implications on National Security, Public Safety, and Government Transparency "IndyWatch Feed National"

Background

This page is setup on The Black Vault to archive details about the July 26, 2023, subcommittee hearing about Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAP. It was held by the National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs subcommittee.

Archived here will be all information released, including additional information added by The Black Vault. This page will be updated through the day on July 26, then later archived to maintain the information.

Original Press Release of July 20, 2023

WASHINGTONThe Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs will hold a hearing titled Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Implications on National Security, Public Safety, and Government Transparency. The subcommittee hearing will explore firsthand accounts of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) and assess the federal governments transparency and accountability regarding UAPs possible threats to U.S. national security. This hearing will also highlight legislative efforts to bring transparency to UAPs and require the federal government to provide the American people with information about potential risks to public safety and national security.

The Pentagon and Washington bureaucrats have kept this information hidden for decades, and were finally going to shed some light on it. Were bringing in credible witnesses who can provide public testimony because the American people deserve the truth. Were done with the cover-ups, said Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.).

In 2022, at the direction of Congress, the Department of Defense created the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) to investigate UAP reports. The federal government spends millions of dollars examining UAPs yet refuses to be forthcoming with the American people as it continues to declassify certain videos and studies on various UAP incidents with little clarity on the subjects origins.

The status quo on the part of the U.S. government has been to leave the American public in the dark regarding information about UAPs, refuse to answer questions posed by whistleblowers, avoid the concerns Americans have about the possible threats UAPs pose to our national security and public safety, and default to extreme and unnecessary over-classification. If the last few months have taught me anything, it is that this is an issue that matters to Americans. It also impacts the transparency and accountability our government is supposed to grant to the pe...

The International in Support the Troops "IndyWatch Feed National"

The second commentary in our ongoing symposium on Katharine Millars Support the Troops: Military Obligation, Gender, and the Making of Political Community. Pinar Bilgin is a professor of International Relations at Bilkent University, Ankara. She is the author of The International in Security, Security in the International (Routledge, 2016) and Regional Security in the Middle East: A Critical Perspective, 2nd ed. (Routledge, 2019). www.pinarbilgin.me

Support has emerged as the new service following a moment of disconnect with the troops in the UK and the US, we learn from Kate Millars book, Support the Troops. How about other parts of the world that apparently experienced no such disconnect? Support the Troops makes no claim to explain what happens outside the US and UK cases. But I wonder if, by missing aspects of the international, were missing a part of the condition of possibility of all this? In what follows, I will consider the international that has allowed for support to emerge as the new service in some parts of the world, even as others continue to serve and support in some other parts of the world.

Millar acknowledges that StT discoursesalmost uniformlyfail to engage with the international in that Iraqi, Pakistani, and Afghan civilians killed by the wars are rarely mentioned (175). But then, inter-state wars do not exhaust the international. The author also considers the colonial background. These states the US, UK, and others with pervasive support the troops practices, notably Canada and Australiaare also unified by their status as colonial states, she notes (177). Indeed, following Tarak Barkawis argument in Soldiers of Empire, colonial military relations have shaped post-colonial military relations. Yet again, post-/colonial relations do not exhaust the international.

The international in Support the Troops can also be located in post-World War II relations between Europe and non-Europe. When I write Europe, I refer to Western Europe and North America as the geographies that are put at the centre by those who are carriers of this particular w...

6 Bathroom Tile Trends "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Whether youre in the market for a full bathroom makeover or a simple touch-up, there are plenty of bathroom tile trends that can kick-start your transformation. Tiles are a fantastic way to add colour, patterns and visual flair to your bathroom and make an impact. Today, well discuss 6 bathroom tile trends that will help you update your bathroom and create something modern, stylish and impactful.

  1. Mixed Matte and Gloss Tiles

While combining tiles with different finishes might sound odd, the reality is that its a great way to enhance the visuals of your bathroom and create an aesthetic thats modern and cutting-edge. We recommend combining matte and gloss tiles of different shades of the same colour, as it creates a bold yet understated design. What makes it so visually appealing is that the glossy tiles catch the light, opening up the space and creating a contrast with the matte tiles that catch your eye for all the right reasons.

  1. Experimenting With Patterns

Patterned tiles remain a staple of modern bathrooms around the world, immediately injecting personality anywhere they go. One thing to consider when selecting patterned tiles is their size, especially in relation to the dimensions of your bathroom.

You dont want to create something too busy or overwhelming, so consider selecting a soft pattern that will complement the rest of the interior rather than distract from it. If you do want to select a pattern thats more dramatic, balance it out with simple walls and fixtures so that your eyes know where to look and dont cause a sensory overload.

  1. Metallics

Whether its copper, gold or brass, metallic-effect tiles are a surefire way to create an industrial-style bathroom thats sleek and modern. With their rich tones, metallic tiles are unexpectedly warm and come in an impressive variety of finishes, sizes and colours.

Tile Shop Geelong

If you do decide to go with metallic tiles, stay away from choosing any clashing tapware in your sink, shower or bathtub. Matte black can be a great alternative, allowing your matt tiles to be the focal point of the room and stand out in the best way possible.

Dont think it, just feel it: Folklore weaver Fanny Lumsden returns with new album Hey Dawn "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

With a profound dedication to storytelling and an innate ability to weave emotions into her songs, Australian artist Fanny Lumsden is on the cusp of releasing her much-anticipated album, Hey Dawn.

A labour of love and passion, Lumsden worked intensively to find the world, themes, and messages of this album. Due out on 4 August, it promises to be a captivating exploration of human experiences and emotions through the lens of Lumsdens unparalleled storytelling.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Essentially its exploring how the stories we are told, the ones we tell and the ones we tell ourselves shape us and change colour over time, Lumsden says of her new release.

Sonically I wanted each story to feel right (emphasis on the feel). The theme song, opening track/front cover song Hey Dawn was a moment I had in the recording process where it all came together, I got up one morning whilst recording and as the sun slipped over the horizon I literally said to it hey dawn and from that moment on I was a lot more present and accepting that the place I was in, the person I am right now and the stories I have to tell are the right ones for this moment, dont think it. Just feel it.

Described as her most sonically diverse offering yet, Lumsdens approach to incorporating different musical elements while staying true to her acoustic songwriting style is rooted in her gut feelings and intuition. I am excited to explore, she says, and I dont feel like instrumentation should be limited due to what genre you have been put in. Independent Artist of the Week: Freezer "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

  • :: Freezer on Arvos with Grace and Al

Freezers music is best described as calm for the revved-up caffeine generation. Their energetic, dissonant 1990s, fitted against an experimental DIY sound to make for a head-banging, feet-stomping, hands-pumping listen.

Freezer is our latest Independent Artist of the Week, and they joined Ruby and Al on Friday Arvos for a chat about their live shows, their new EP ...i do my part by not killing spiders, and the community theyve built within the scene.

Having met in high school in Batemans Bay, Freezer initially built their idiosyncratic sound during lunchtime rehearsals. Coming from a rural area, they struggled to find venues to play at, and their first shows at unexpected scenes: a steak restaurant, a concrete yoga studio, barns, and, finally, the muddy underground basement of a house. Throughout it all, Freezer worked hard to build community with similar-sounding bands across Australia.

Its really nice after a long time of looking and searching to have actually found those bands and that sound. And they found us likewise. Its a real mutual respect and care.
Its so interstate, with people from Newcastle, Adelaide, even people from Brisbane that like our stuff and vice-versa. They are very far apart but we still found each other.

As a band, theyve learnt to reflect and grow as they reach their second birthday, a change you can hear in their sound, style and also in their approach to their more recent live shows.

Ideally theres a projector we have this particular documentary we project onto the background. Its a snow monkey documentary an old 80s snow...

  • Angie McMahon :: interview with Ben Hansen

Melbourne singer/songwriter Angie McMahons new single Letting Go is a big-hearted rock song about embracing the lessons that can come from making mistakes. Through both its lyrics and soaring crescendos, the song feels like a big release. And maybe also a warm hug. All at once.

A lot has happened in the four years since Angie McMahon broke out with her stunning debut album Salt. The album wormed its way into many a sensitive souls hearts, the world was hit with a global pandemic, Angies voice was sampled by man of the moment Fred again.. who would go on to play it to roaring crowds around the world (see: Fred closing out his now-viral Boiler Room set with the song), and in between all of this, she wrote a new album.

Angie came into FBi Radio and sat down with Ben Hansen on Mornings to discuss her new album Light, Dark, Light Again (slated for October), and the the first two singles from the release, the ethereal Saturn Returning and th...

Last minute logging still possible at Mt Stirling? "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The announcement that native forest logging will end in eastern Victoria on January 1, 2024 is great news for the forests of the high country.

We wrote a brief piece explaining the implications of the announcement here.

As we noted in that story, this means the state will be spared another six years of intensive logging and allow us to start the generations long work of restoring a landscape that has been deeply impacted by intensive logging and repeat fires in recent decades.

However, significant areas of the high country are still included in an updated Timber Release Plan (TRP) which could be logged before the January 1 cutoff date.

We are watching a number of key areas, including Mt Stirling, the headwaters of the Little Dargo, and Mt Wills area to ensure that no last minute cut and run logging occurs.

It is good to note that Alpine Resorts Victoria is saying that proposed logging at Mt Stirling may not proceed given the cessation of logging by January 1, 2024.

Western media as cheerleaders for war "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Carried away by the logic of one-upmanship that they impose on the world of politics, the media are co-producing Western countries progressive entry into the war against Russia. US, Australia Launch Largest-Ever Joint Military Exercise "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

This years Talisman Sabre exercise involved 11 other nations and over 30,000 military personnelby Dave DeCamp Posted on  https://news.antiwar.com/2023/07/23/us-australia-launch-largest-ever-joint-military-exercise/

The US and Australia on Friday launched the largest-ever iteration of their Talisman Sabre exercise as the US is increasingly focused on building alliances in the Asia Pacific against China.

The Talisman Sabre started in 2005 as a biennial exercise between the US and Australia. This years iteration involves participants from 11 other countries and over 30,000 military personnel.

US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro spoke at the opening ceremony on Friday and said the massive drills served as a warning to China. The most important message that China can take from this exercise and anything that our allies and partners do together is that we are extremely tied by the core values that exist among our many nations together, he said at a naval base in Sydney.

In a symbolic gesture to demonstrate the growing military ties between the US and Australia, the US on Saturday commissioned a naval vessel in Sydney, the USS Canberra, an Independence-class littoral combat ship. It marked the first time the US ever commissioned a US Navy ship was commissioned in a foreign port.

Del Toro has previously said that the US Navy envisions turning Australia into a full-service submarine hub for the US and its allies in the region under the AUKUS military pact that was signed between the US, Britain, and Australia in 2021 that will result in...

UPDATE The Zaporozhiya Nuclear Plant: Zelenskiys Next Simulacra? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Russian and Eurasian Politics, by GORDONHAHNJuly 22, 2023

To update my original article The Zaporozhiya Nuclear Power Plant: Zelenskiys Next Simulacara it is worth noting the following points:

(1) There has been no incident, obviously, at the plant either of Russian origin, as Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelenskiy claimed was being planned, or of Ukrainian origin, as I argued was possible and the Russians claimed was almost certain in response to the Ukrainian claims. However, there was, as I suspected, clearly another Ukrainian fake, another Zelenskiy simulacra, since there was not Russian nuclear terrorist attack and since the IAEA came out and refuted the Ukrainians claims that the Russians had planted explosives at the Zaporozhiya plant.

Second, it appears that this particular Zelenskiy simulacra was an effort to push the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive out of the headlines on the eve of NATOs Vilnius summit. It may be that, as some sources report, that European leaders intervened to prevent the Ukrainians from following through on their supposedly planned false flag.

Third, it is astonishing how the Western media and Wstern governments, which was heavy breathing in its hard work of repeating the Kiev Maidan regimes talking point about the imminent Russian nuclear terrorism, has shoved the entire episode of Zelenskiys Russian nuclear terrorist attack into the bottomless memory whole that serves this war.

This follows the same pattern of moving on quickly after the numerous controversial and false claims that have come out of Kiev both before and during the war. Regarding the latter, there s already a long list: the Kakhovskii damn attack, the Nord Stream pipeline attack, the Russian massacre at Bucha (where is the list of names of those killed and the detailed forensics reports on how and when precisely they died?), the hero Ukrainian pilot The Ghost who never existed, the heroic defense of Snake Island that never occurred, the bombing of the Mariupol maternity hospital, among others.

This is part of a larger Western pattern of memory-wholing.. The point is not that the West and Ukraine always lie or that lie more than Moscow, which it seems they do, however. The point is that Zelenskiy and his government comprise a serial fake artist, the West is their microphone, and Russia has work to do to compete with its opponents in the sphere of public diplomacy.

The original article reads as follows:

It appears almost certain that Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy and his generals, rather than Russian President Vladimir Putin and his, are considering and preparing a false flag nuclear provocation at the Z...

Japan Doesnt Want to Fight for Taiwan and Neither Do Other US Allies "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

if Japan fought alongside the US in a hypothetical conflict with China over Taiwan, the Japanese civilians and economy would suffer greatly. Whats more, in a conflict between two nuclear powers, China and the US, Japan may itself become a nuclear target,

90 Seconds to Midnight nuclear weapons are still a threat, not a lesson in history "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

After a weekend in which Chris Nolans new film Oppenheimer opened in UK cinemas to great acclaim, it would be easy to think that nuclear weapons are now a thing of the past but the UK/Ireland Nuclear Free Local Authorities are all too aware that todays weapons are infinitely more powerful that the rudimentary gadgets dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and that chillingly many remain on hair-trigger alert ready to be fired on warning, targeted at the millions of civilians who live in our cities.

Robert Oppenheimer himself had doubts about the future of humanity should more powerful devices be developed after the war. He called for international control of atomic weapons and for the United States to refrain from developing far more destructive hydrogen bombs; ultimately these actions, contrary to received wisdom in foreign policy and military doctrine, took him from being the darling of the scientific and political elite to its pariah, earning him dismissal from high office and the revocation of his security clearance.

Although the thawing of US-Soviet relations during the Reagan-Gorbachev era and the ending of the Cold War led to a significant reduction in the number of nuclear warheads held by the two superpowers, from a high of around 70,000, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reports in its latest Yearbook that there are still an estimated 12,512 warheads in January 2023, with about 9,576 in military stockpiles for potential use. Of these, an estimated 3,844 warheads are deployed on missiles and aircraft, and around 2,000nearly all of which belong to Russia or the USAare kept in a state of high operational alert ready to fire at short notice.

In 2023 we have nine nuclear-armed states (the USA, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel). The United States also currently stores air-dropped nuclear bombs in four European nations and in Turkey under a hosting agreement to fit them to the nuclear-capable military aircraft of those NATO nations in the event of war, and, with ongoing war in Ukraine and the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus, there is a real possibility that US nuclear weapons will soon again be redeployed to USAF / RAF Lakenheath taking us back to Cold War days.

Nuclear weapons are infinitely more powerful and more accurate than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, and the consequences of their use are too dreadful to contemplate. Brilliant scientist and anti-bomb campaigner Albert Einstein famously said of the impact of any nuclear war that, in addition to the appalling human casualties and the complete destruction of our natural and built environment, human development would be so set back that any Fourth World War would be fought with sticks and stones!

Even the Trinity test itself, played out in a seemingly empty desert, had consequences...

Small Australian Penguins Saved By Large White Dogs "IndyWatch Feed National"

BBC

Just off the picturesque coast of Warrnambool city in Australia, lies a hidden gem called Middle Island. This unassuming island is not only a breathtaking natural wonder, but it is also home to some very small and special residents who have become the center of a remarkable achievement.

Meet the adorable little penguin, affectionately known as the fairy penguin. As their name suggests, these charming creatures are the smallest penguins in the world, standing at a mere 35 centimeters tall. Despite their petite size, they possess a unique spirit that captures the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

However, the tranquility of Middle Island was once disrupted by a grave threat to the little penguin population. Starting in 1991, sedimentation and tidal patterns created a temporary pathway, a tidal causeway, between the island and the mainland. Unfortunately, this newfound connection proved to be a gateway for foxes, who swiftly seized the opportunity to wreak havoc on the vulnerable ground-nesting birds.

In the face of this crisis, an unexpected hero emerged. Swampy Marsh, a humble chicken farmer residing nearby, possessed a wealth of knowledge on outsmarting and protecting...

Two UAVs crashed into buildings in the Russian capital, with fragments reportedly found not far from the Defense Ministry

The attempted Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow early Monday morning, which damaged several non-residential buildings, is an act of international terrorism, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

The spokeswoman condemned the attack on Monday morning while speaking to RTVI TV. Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine attempted to stage a terrorist attack against Moscow using two drones, which were suppressed by electronic warfare systems

Kiev applauded the raid, with Mikhail Fedorov, Ukraines minister for digital transformation, promising that there will be more of these incidents.

Amid the conflict with Russia, Kiev has previously tried to launch drone raids on Moscow and its suburbs. Earlier this month, the Russian Defense Ministry said that air defenses downed four drones in the southeastern districts of the capital, and another UAV was neutralized by electronic warfare systems west of Moscow more https://www.rt.com/russia/580185-ukrainian-drone-attack-moscow-international-terrorism/

CIA-Linked Security Company Targeted Former Ecuador President Who Granted Assange Asylum "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

By Kevin Gosztola / The Dissenter

In addition to targeting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, a CIA-linked private security company based in Spain allegedly spied on former Ecuador president Rafael Correa.

Spanish newspaper El Pas reported that UC Global director David Morales instructed his employees to collect information from Correas 2018 meetings with Latin American leaders that included the former presidents of Argentina, Brazil and UruguayCristina Fernndez de Kirchner, Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, Dilma Rousseff, and Jos Mujica...

News media that partnered with Assange and WikiLeaks on the publication of documents at issue in the U.S. casethe New York Times, the Guardian, Der Spiegel, and Le Mondehave ignored what has been learned about UC Global and the CIA.

But the uncovered evidence is important and relevant to the U.S. Justice Departments unprecedented effort to pursue an Espionage Act trial against a journalist and publisher.

Dr Colossus returns for one show only "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Australias best-loved (and possibly only) Simpsons-themed doom metal band, Dr Colossus, will return to Geelong for one show only to celebrate the second anniversary of their latest album.

The seven-track album, Im a Stupid Moron With an Ugly Face and a Big Butt and My Butt Smells and I Like to Kiss My Own Butt, is named after a Bart Simpson prank call.

While not as long as the Guiness World Record-holding 156-word title of Chumbawumbas 2008 album, it may well be the longest titled album to reach the top five of the ARIA Australian album charts, which it did in May 2021.

Dr Colossus music fuses deep metal grooves with deep cuts from Simpsons dialogue and storylines, permeating their tunes with a definite comedic element.

They also tend to start their sets walking through the crowd to the stage in full Stonecutters regalia (Homer the Great, s6 ep12 for the uninitiated), setting the tone for their performances.

Lead singer and guitarist Jono Colliver said he loved that the band could bring together metal heads, Simpsons fans and people who were simply curious.

The beauty of our show is that theres a lot of people that are going for the comedic element, who may not have ever been to a show like that, he said.

They probably have expectations of (a metal show) being quite exclusive, gate-kept, or kind of machoistic.

The joy I get out of it is seeing people that have never been to a heavy show who end up coming away being like, wow, Im going to go and check out a lot of other heavy bands and start going to more heavy shows because its not what I expected.

Theres something they might have missed out on unless theyd been coaxed in by the lols. Melody is pretty much universal; in essence, (metal is) riff-based pop music.

Dr Colossus will perform at the Barwon Club on August 5 and, unusually for a headline act, open the show soon after doors open at 6pm.

(Bassist) Mike (Findlay), hes like our ambassador at the Barwon Club, its his home ground; he wanted to make it so we would play first and we could enjoy the show afterwards, Colliver said.

So were going to play first and then were going to watch our favourite bands in our favourite venue and hang out with everybody rather than missing the social atmosphere of it.

Dr Colossus will be supported by Planet of the 8s, Two Headed Dog, Spawn and Full Tone Generator.

Daniel Duggans imprisonment is a denial of justice and an affront to Australias sovereignty "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Contributed from Victoria

Too many Australians still dont know who Daniel Duggan is, even if his case has significant repercussions and says a lot about how legal process is Australia is being transformed into something that we should all be worried about. Everyone should know more about what is happening to this man.

Daniel is a former American and now Australian citizen and a family. He was once a US marine, and since coming to Australia, built a pilot training business. This led him to a contract to for commercial pilot training in South Africa, with a company that goes by the name of the Test Flying Academy of South Africa (TFASA).

It happened that he had some of the students were Chinese citizens. Theis led authorities in Washington to accuse TFASA and Duggen of working with the Chinese to undermine United States policy. It led to action to capture Duggan, and it appears, with the assistance of the Australia Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), which is immersed in the United States led confrontation with China.

Through this agency Daniel Duggen was called and offered a job in Australia. He went for it, was arrested by federal police and imprisoned, wasnt offered bail and has been kept in solitary confinement. Daniel has now been locked up in this way for more than 9 months, without an ending in sight.  He next faces court on 24 November.

The cover was the issuing of an Interpol red notice that provides for extradition on certain grounds. It excludes extradition in cases that are political. Australia also has an extradition treaty with the United States, and this too spells out that it does not allow extradition for any alleged political offence.

All of this is being violated.

Urgent care service to ease pressure Far North Coast emergency departments "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Minister for Regional Health, Ryan Park. Photo supplied

A new Rapid Outreach Service (ROS) will become available throughout the Tweed and Byron Shires from late-2023 offering in-home care seven days a week.

According to Minister for Regional Health, Ryan Park today Patients, their families and carers living in Tweed, Byron and Murwillumbah communities will have more options for timely, tailored healthcare with a new urgent care service in the region.

The new Rapid Outreach Service will reduce unnecessary trips to the emergency department, said Mr Park.

We know many people who visit our emergency departments (EDs) could receive more timely and better tailored care within a community setting. The Rapid Outreach Service will enable patients to be treated in the comfort of their own homes, which will make a big difference.

This model is designed to create better links between the hospital and primary care systems providing an additional option for people to receive urgent care for injuries and illnesses when a GP is unavailable.

Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin said the service would boost access to health care in the region.

By providing care and support in person in the patients own home or aged care facility, as well as through virtual care platforms, it removes the burden of having to travel to hospital or the GP for healthcare, Ms Saffin said.

Dotty Domains: The Pentagons Mali Typo Leak Affair "IndyWatch Feed National"

Fleet-footed agility and sharp thinking rarely characterise the plodding bureaucrat.  An argument can be made that different attributes are prized: cherished incompetence, spells of inattentiveness, and dedication to keeping things secret with severity.  What matters is not what you did, but what you pretended to do.

Even with maintaining secrecy, the plodding desk-job hack can face problems, all falling under the umbrella term of human error.  Papers and files can stray.  The occasional USB stick can find its way into unwanted hands. And then there is that damnable business about the cloud and who can access it.

Despite repeated warnings over a decade by the Amsterdam-based Mali Dili, contracted to manage email accounts of the West African state, traffic from the US military continued to find its way to the .ml domain, the country identifier of Mali.  (For all we know, this may still be happening.)  This arose because of a typing error, with .mil being the suffix for US military email addresses.

Other countries also seemed caught up in the domain confusion.  Over a dozen emails intended for the Dutch military also found their way into the Johannes Zuurbier with .ml being confused with .nl.  Eight emails from the Australian Department of Defence, intended for US military consumption, also met the same fate.  These include problems about corrosion in Australias F-35 and an artillery manual carried by command post officers for each battery.

The man most bemused by this is not, it would seem, in the Pentagon, but a certain Dutch entrepreneur who was given the task of managing the domain.  Johannes Zuurbier has found himself inconvenienced by the whole matter for some years.  In 2023, he decided to gather the misdirected messages.  He currently holds 117,000 of them, though he has received anywhere up to 1,000 messages a day.  He has been good enough to badger individuals in the US national cyber security service, the White House, and the local defence attach in Mali.

The Financial Times reports that the contents of such messages vary.  Much of it is spam; a degree of it comprises X-Rays, medical data, identity documents, crew lists for ships, staffing names at bases, mapping on installations, base photos, naval inspection reports, contracts, criminal complaints against various personnel, internal investigations on bullying claims, official travel itineraries, bookings, tax and financial records.

While not earth shaking, one of the misdirected emails featured the travel itinerary of General James McConville, the US Armys Chief of Staff, whose visit to Indonesia was noted, alongsid...

Reviewing current and proposed sexual consent laws "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Blue Seat Studios

Affirmative consent for sexual interactions became law in NSW on 1 June, 2022, but not all states and territories in Australia have affirmative consent laws. On 29 November, 2022 the Australian Senate referred an Inquiry into current and proposed sexual consent laws in Australia. Today at the Senate Hearing into current and proposed sexual consent laws across Australia, No to Violence CEO Jacqui Watt called for an affirmative consent model for any case that comes before the court.

Other recommendations that have been made include harmonising Australias consent laws across all jurisdictions to ensure consistency of both laws and understanding of sexual consent which were recommended by both Full Stop Australia and ANROWS (Australias National Research Organisation for Womens Safety) who both provided submissions to the Inquiry.

The Law Council recognised the inconsistencies in consent laws across various jurisdictions on the experience of victim-survivors in their submission and supported a national evaluation of sexual consent laws. They also recognised that women and girls are more likely than males to have experienced sexual violence and that the incidence of sexual harm often overlaps with other patterns of violence, including family and domestic violence and child abuse, and disproportionately affects already marginalised groups in society.

Sexual violence is widespread but underreported. Most reports of sexual violence do not make it to court, pointed out the Law Council.

Inaugural Climate Conversations Project Mending and Tending: Art that works for Nature launches "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The inaugural Climate Conversations Project, Mending and Tending: Art that works for Nature, produced by local artists Samantha Moss, Jess Poulsen and Shona Wilson, will open at Lone Goat Gallery on Saturday 29 July.

An event on Friday 28 July from 5pm will officially open the project, which will run for one month.

There are many ways the community can engage with this interactive project at two locations. Lone Goat Gallery will be transformed into an exhibition and making space and host artist talks and workshops. While at Torakina Nature Reserve in Brunswick Heads there will be two unique events.

We are really excited to launch this new project that empowers artists to engage the community in important conversations about climate adaptation. We hope it is something we can continue as a biennial program, Byron Shire Councils Sustainability Team Leader, Julia Adams, said.

Samantha, Jess, and Shona all share a deep connection and appreciation for the environment, as well as an established art practice working with nature, she said.

The full program is as follows. All events are free and do not require a booking:

  • Launch event at Lone Goat Gallery on Friday 28 July from 5pm until 7pm.
  • Exhibition at Lone Goat Gallery from Saturday 29 July until Saturday 26 August.
  • Art Making Workshops at Torakina Nature Reserve on Sunday 30 July from 10am until 4pm.
  • Moonlit Nature Walk and Sound Meditation at Torakina Nature Reserve on Wednesday 2 August from 5pm.
  • Artist Talk and Workshop with Shona Wilson at Lone Goat Gallery on Saturday 5 August from 1pm.
  • Artist Talk and Workshop with Samantha Moss at Lone Goat Gallery on Saturday 12 August from 1pm.
  • Artist Talk and Workshop with Jess Poulsen at Lone Goat Gallery on Saturday 19 August from 1pm.

Climate Conversations is a new creative initiative that invites Northern Rivers artists to collaborate with community and explore ways we can adapt, reorganise, and evolve in the face of climate change through the arts. The theme this year is adaptation.

Ammos hang on in thriller "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Geelong Amateur held onto fifth spot on the Bellarine Football League with a thrilling three-point win against a spirited Ocean Grove on July 22.

Ocean Grove led by a point at the main break, but Ammos, despite some inaccurate kicking, held on to win in a nailbiter.

Star forward Aaron Willitts was Ammos best with two goals while skipper Harry Kershaw was his usual busy self around the ball.

Ocean Grove coach Dave Farrell said his young side had improved as the season has progressed and they were now staying in games much longer.

A 14-point loss to second placed Barwon Heads, a 12-point defeat to unbeaten Torquay and now a three-point loss to Ammos says the Grubbers are heading in the right direction.

On the surface it doesnt seem the players confidences have been done any harm over the last few weeks, Farrell said.

Each week weve had a number of changes forced through injury and unavailability which has confirmed the depth of our list is developing, theres a number of players prepared to come in and play their role and trust what the coaching group have put in place.

Torquay confirmed its premiership credentials with a 41-point win against Barwon Heads.

The Tigers pulled away in the last term with Lucas Anderson taking his seasons tally of goals to 62 with six while Will Montebello and Nick OFarrell each booted four.

The Seagulls will be without Luca Vella and Tom Swift this week with both players being concussed during the game.

Drysdale ensured it will finish in the top three with a 17-point win against Anglesea.

Ben Fennell followed up from last weeks haul of five goals with another four while Jack Baker was a standout for Anglesea with five.

Anglesea is in fourth spot, just half a game clear of Ammos and Modewarre.

Newcomb stunned Queenscliff with its best performance of the season.

Jude Poyser booted five goals for the Power in the 53-point win while key defender Thomas Webster was terrific.

Modewarre defeated Portarlington by 46-points to stay in the finals race.

Connor Joseph booted seven for the Warriors while Portarlington would be buoyed by perhaps its best performance of the season with Jesse Jay King and Nathan Pigott playing well.

An Aussie tale of spirit and humour "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Geelong Arts Centre (GAC) will host the world premiere of the Space Companys Hells Gates, a theatrical retelling of Australias worst ever whale stranding event near Strahan, Tasmania in 2020.

The show will features well-loved actors Louise Siversen (House Husbands, Prisoner), Natalie ODonnell (Come From Away, Next to Normal) and Matu Ngaropo (Hamilton), as well as live musical accompaniment by celebrated violinist Xani Kolak.

Creative producer Joel Carnegie, who founded the award-winning Geelong-based production studio, and writer James Jackson engaged in hundreds of hours of face-to-face interviews with people connected to the event, mostly west coast Tasmanian locals, to gather the raw material for Hells Gates.

Carnegie said the resulting blend of poignant drama and poetic comedy resulted in a narrative that was quintessentially Australian.

Its really been infused with the character of the west coast of Tasmania; the people we met, how they interacted with us, the way in which they described the events that unfolded, how they felt about it, he said.

Its the story of a community who, in the face of the impossible, decided to turn up and deal with an ecological disaster that was unfolding in front of them.

But its also very funny. There are genuine laugh out loud moments, and I think thats sort of a coping mechanism for the people who were telling us these stories. Dealing with trauma through camaraderie, through sharing those experiences together and having a laugh about it.

Carnegie said he was thrilled to premiere the work at GAC as the redeveloped venue reopened to the public.

To be on stage at the dawn of this new era of the performing arts scene in Geelong, to be a Geelong-based company and share this story at this new venue is an incredible opportunity, he said.

This is a really special show that we know audiences are going to love. Its a real emotional rollercoaster ride.

Hells Gates will have four shows from Aug 10 to 12 at the GACs Story House. For information and tickets visit geelongartscentre.org.au

Bruns van dwellers move around the corner "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Byron council estimates up to 160 camper vans are parked illegally each night. (file pic)

Byron Shire Council has carried out its promise to close a public carpark in Brunswick Heads, where a group of van dwellers were reportedly engaging in anti-social behaviour.

But with no alternative site provided, and talk of setting up hot showers and other facilities in the town so far coming to nothing, some are questioning whether the issue has received anything more than a band-aid solution.

A majority of councillors voted to close the South Beach Lane carpark at its May meeting, after home owners on the lane complained that the campers were slamming their doors and playing loud music at all hours, polluting the site with rubbish and human waste, and verbally abusing residents.

Staff followed through earlier this month, moving the campers on, and installing a row of large concrete barriers in the lane to prevent their return.

The move appears to have appeased most of the home owners.

However, with no alternative parking area available, some of the van dwellers appear to have simply moved around the corner to South Beach Road.

To some degree, its just moving the situation to another spot, said Sarah-Jane McGrath, a local woman experiencing homelessness who advocates for others in a similar situation.

I supported the closure of that space, even though Ive been homeless and living in my van for three years, because I felt the people who created the disharmony needed to be moved on.

But nothing has really changed in terms of the overall issue.

1977: Quentin Crisp, stately homo of England "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Destiny Rogers

In 1977, the Canberra Times reviewed Quentin Crisps The Naked Civil Servant, the outrageous memoir of a stately homo of England. Published in 1968, the witty, joyous, and unapologetic celebration of Quentin Crisps unusual and highly homosexual life did not enjoy an auspicious beginning. As the Canberra Times said: Too wholesomely comic about sexual abnormality ...

Deep-sea mining rules delayed two more years; mining start remains unclear "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

KINGSTON, Jamaica On July 22, nations reached an agreement that will make it more difficult for deep-sea mining to start immediately in international waters, while not fully halting the industrys progress. For the past two weeks, council members of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), the UN-affiliated deep-sea mining regulator, have been meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, to negotiate a set of rules that would govern seabed mining in international waters. This proposed activity would excavate the ocean floor for commercially valuable minerals, which proponents say are needed for renewable technologies, such as electric-vehicle batteries. Yet, critics say deep-sea mining is unnecessary for mineral procurement and would cause widespread and far-reaching damage to marine ecosystems that sustain life on Earth. While deep-sea mining has not begun anywhere in the world, mining companies have invested large sums of money into technology development and launched mining exploration missions into the deep sea.  These meetings were highly anticipated because they coincided with the expiration of a so-called two-year rule that had the potential to jump-start deep-sea mining on the high seas, the vast tracts of ocean beyond national jurisdictions. In 2021, the tiny Pacific island of Nauru activated this rule embedded in the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea to encourage the ISA to adopt mining regulations by July 9, 2023, or to allow mining to begin with whatever rules were in place at the time. News Desk - Wamena Case
25 July 2023

Jayapura, Jubi On Monday, July 24, 2023, the local administration of Jayawijaya Regency, Mountainous Papua, along with the Jayawijaya Peoples Council (DPRD) and Regional Leaders Coordination Forum, conducted a meeting with the victims and families affected by the Wamena human rights violations that occurred on April 4, 2003.

However, the victims have previously expressed their rejection of any initiatives from the central government, whether it be compensation or non-judicial settlements.

Linus Hiluka, a victim of the 2003 Wamena incident, reiterated this stance, speaking on behalf of the other victims families. In the most recent meeting, Linus Hiluka restated their position and urged the Indonesian government to allow the UN Human Rights Commission to conduct a direct investigation into various human rights...

Scores of parliamentarians renew opposition to deep-sea mining at international meeting (commentary) "IndyWatch Feed National"

Without oceans, no life on earth. The statement is clear. As we, parliamentarians from all around the world, write these words, States are meeting in Kingston for the International Seabed Authority Assembly, where they could decide to prevent the launch of new, massive, oceans-destroying gear used in deep-sea mining. This is the newest project of the mining industry: opening mines at the bottom of the oceans. Even if the seabed is even less known than the surface of the moon. Even if deep sea mining would irreversibly affect sensitive ecosystems, liberate huge quantities of carbon, and risk harming marine animals such as whales, due to the noise pollution that will be generated. Energy transition cannot justify such environmental destruction. If we strengthen energy sobriety, efficiency and recycling, we will not have to exploit the deep seabed for our batteries and technology. The Metals Company and others plan to drop mining equipment like this to the bottom of the deep seas to prospect for minerals useful for the renewable energy transition. Image via The Metals Company. This is clearly not the opinion of The Metals Company. Led by the lure of profit, this company has triggered, through the State of Nauru, a two-year rule that could open up the deep seabed to the mining industry, as early as this summer. Since the beginning of July, they could apply for a mining permit at any time. Since then, the mobilization calling for a moratorium to prevent this madness is growing. Reflecting on the 20th anniversary of RAMSI in Solomon Islands "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

A significant milestone in the history of Solomon Islands and the South Pacific was marked this week, on 24 July 2023. It was the 20th anniversary of the start of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), a mission that aimed to restore peace, stability and normalcy in a country torn apart by devastating ethnic tensions. As we commemorate this milestone, it is crucial to reflect on the successes, challenges and ongoing struggles that characterise the post-RAMSI era in Solomon Islands.

RAMSI was established in 2003 in response to the ethnic violence that gripped Solomon Islands, disrupting social order and impeding economic growth. The mission, a coalition of Pacific Island states with Australia and New Zealand at the helm, played a significant role in restoring stability and rebuilding damaged infrastructure. RAMSI assisted in reconstituting the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, disarming rival ethnic groups, and restoring a semblance of law and order.

However, as we remember the achievements of RAMSI, we must also acknowledge its limitations and the subsequent challenges faced by Solomon Islands. Despite the relative peace that has been achieved, issues related to governance, social services and economic prospects remain significant challenges. RAMSIs efforts were primarily focused on immediate peacekeeping and stabilising tasks, and less on the deep-rooted governance issues that continue to undermine the countrys development.

In the wake of RAMSIs departure in 2017, the country has grappled with a range of persistent challenges, primarily poor health services, a lack of adequate infrastructure, and limited economic prospects. Despite the health and development initiatives introduced during the RAMSI era, the Solomon Islands health sector struggles with inadequate funding, understaffing, and a lack of essential health services, especially in remote areas. The COVID-19 pandemic has only magnified these weaknesses, further underscoring the urgent need for reform and investment.

Infrastructural development, too, remains a significant issue. Limited road connectivity, unreliable power supply, and inadequate water and sanitation services are common, particularly in rural regions, hampering economic activities and undermining living conditions.

In terms of economic prospects, while RAMSI brought some stability, Solomon Islands remains largely dependent on traditional sources of income like logging, which is environmentally unsustainable. Diversifying the economy and attracting investment are still major challenges, given the countrys remote location, limited infrastructure, and underdeveloped business environment.

These challenges are further compounded by the geopolitical tensions between China and the United States, with Solomon Islands caught in the crossfire.........

Will the small states of Oceania be able to maintain their independence in the face of a new Sino-American Cold War? "IndyWatch Feed National"

The 'friends to all, enemies to none' strategy is living its last days as the US and China press the island nations to take sides... Papua New Guinea is a gateway between continents. The island, being effectively cut in half, demarcates an artificial boundary between Asia and Oceania. In the past several centuries, the broader island has been carved upon between almost every colonial power going, having been ruled at various points by the Dutch, Spanish, German, Japanese and British empires. Even after gaining its formal independence from Australia in 1975, these legacies continue to scar the island, with half of it still belonging to Indonesia, known as West Papua, which is now a source of unrest and insurgency.
