Shady charity goes ahead under Governor-General's name

A charity approved by the Morrison Government has been launched after receiving millions in donations, but a closer look at the fine print reveals cause for suspicion. Anthony Klan reports.

THE GOVERNOR-GENERALS Australian Future Leaders Foundation which was to receive $18 million from taxpayers despite having no office, website or staff, before the Albanese Government snapped the plan has been launched after attracting $2.2 million in donations.

It can be revealed the Gurkhas charity used by businessman Chris Hartley as a springboard  which claims to have international operations in Australia and Nepal and purports to serve victims of disaster has reported deficits every one of the past five years and had negative assets since at least June 2019.

Documents filed with the charities regulator state the Governor-General's Australian Future Leaders Program has raised $2.17 million in donations and bequests of unstated origin, of which $445,855 has gone to unspecified pre-establishment costs.

On the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC) website, the Australian Future Leaders Foundation, run by Hartley, states its objective to help build a nation that leaves no one behind.

Inflation slows to 0.8pc "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Inflation drops sharply

Some very good news on inflation for Aussie policymakers today, with quarterly inflation slowing to just 0.8 per cent, the lowest level since September 2021.

That's an annualised quarterly pace of only 3.2 per cent, so it's little wonder that there was a big shift in OIS pricing, with a 4.3 per cent terminal cash rate now priced in, well down from nearer 4.5 per cent.

Trimmed mean inflation was 0.89 per cent for the quarter, also much better than expected.

Inflation in Australia peaked 6 months later than in the US and Canada due to border closures, but it's evidently following the same pattern: lower.

The monthly CPI indicator for Australia also came in lower than expected, slowing to 5.4 per cent over the year.

After half a decade of inflation being too low, we've now a significant overshoot...but it does seem to be heading back in the right direction now.

Member's Day "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Today is a Member's Day, and after a long period of later stages, we should finally be seeing some first readings. First up is the second reading of the Annie Oxborough Birth Parents Registration Bill, a private bill to undo the effects of an old adoption on someone's birth records. That's unlikely to take long - no-one objects to it - so then its on to the committee stage of Camilla Belich's Companies (Directors Duties) Amendment Bill. After that, it's first readings: the last ten minutes or so of Eugenie Sage's Crown Minerals (Prohibition of Mining) Amendment Bill (which chickenshit Labour will vote down, raising the price of any future coalition), Karen Chhour's racist Oranga Tamariki (Repeal of Section 7AA) Amendment Bill, and Helen White's Employment Relations (Restraint of Trade) Amendment Bill. If the House moves quickly it should make a start on Stuart Smith's Sale and Supply of Alcohol (Cellar Door Tasting) Amendment Bill. There should be a ballot for at least two bills tomorrow.

Table tennis: One of the world's best brain sports "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Table tennis: One of the world's best brain sports

Table tennis is one of the world's most popular sports and has many little-known health benefits that can assist longevity in the body and mind, writes Dean Frenkel.

WHAT SPORT would you recommend your child play?

If its football, most footballers have to retire by age 30, some having acquired injuries for life. If its competitive tennis, most players overdevelop one side of their bodies and suffer shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist and, of course, tennis elbow injuries.

If you like soccer, regularly heading soccer balls for decades can leave you with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and lets not talk netball and knees and ankles, or rugby which is associated with John Hopoate and neck braces. If you love cricket, few cricketers have bodies that allow them to play beyond the age of 38.

In short, table tennis should top the list of recommended sports for anyone from age 4 to beyond 90. It can even be medicinal.

Competitive table tennis is a low-injury, intensive fitness workout and a highly intelligent game. Physician and brain imaging expert Dr Daniel Amen calls it the best brain sport. It is even gender-irrelevant one of those rare sports where women and men compete against each other on an even keel.

I never beat 83-year-old George Chen in seven years of table tennis (TT) competition but playing him was like playing against kung fu itself. His charisma and skill literally made his opponents games fall apart. There are other George Chens who take more than 70 years of experience into their matches, and...

Telstra cuts hundreds of jobs amid growing challenges

Facing stagnant revenue growth, telco giant Telstra has axed almost 500 jobs in an effort to cut costs. Paul Budde reports.

TELSTRA HAS once again made headlines with its announcement of a significant workforce reduction. The company revealed plans to cut approximately 500 jobs as part of its cost-cutting initiative, marking the first major round of redundancies under the leadership of CEO Vicki Brady.

These measures are aligned with Telstra's T25 strategy, aimed at streamlining operations, enhancing efficiency and positioning the company for sustained competitiveness while achieving its customer-centric goals.

The telecommunications industry, both in Australia and globally, has been facing numerous challenges over the last few decades. The rapid advancement of new technologies, such as 3G, 4G, 5G and Low Earth Orbit satellites, has indeed provided telcos with more efficient ways to offer better services at lower costs. While these advancements have brought benefits to consumers and the industry, they have also triggered a shift in workforce requirements.

Many incumbents in the telecommunications sector, including Telstra, have been struggling to maintain profitability in the face of stagnant revenue growth. Prominent announcements about the potential revenue opportunities brought by the next generation of technologies have not materialised as expected. It has become evident that the introduction of new products, such as 5G, is not the ultimate solution to bolster telcos' profits.

As the industry continues to grapple with these challenges, telcos have recognised the need to focus on cost-saving measures to ensure financial viability. Automation and technological efficiencies have proven to be vital tools in achieving this goal. However, it is important to note that while...

Cover up: The Australian Governments Secret List of U.S. Bases "IndyWatch Feed National"

By Richard Tanter, Pearls and Irritations, July25, 2023

What do the governments of other US allies, including Hungary, Norway, the Philippines, and the former puppet government of Afghanistan, possess that Australian governments do not? The answer is a conception of genuine sovereignty, and obligations to transparency that are foreign to Australian governments, particularly the incumbent Albanese government.

In November 2011, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and President Barack Obama announced plans for annual deployment of a US Marine Rotational Force to Darwin and US Air Force aircraft to Australian bases in the Northern Territory, commencing in April 2012.

The United States Australia Force Posture Agreement signed on 12 August 2014 formalised a much larger strategic upgrade of alliance arrangements initiated by the two leaders. Over the past decade both governments have made very large budgetary commitments to infrastructure developments at Australian defence facilities in northern Australia under various headings, including the Australian Defence Departments continually evolving United States Force Posture Initiative.

A key feature of the Force Posture Agreement is the concept of Agreed Facilities and Areas, defined in Article I of the Agreement as follows:

Agreed Facilities and Areas means the facilities and areas in the territory of Australia provided by Australia which may be listed in Annex A appended to this Agreement, and such other facilities and areas in the territory of Australia as may be provided by Australia in the future, to which United States Forces, United States Contractors, dependants, and other United States Government personnel as mutually agreed, shall have the right to access and use pursuant to this Agreement.

Blinkens Visit Supporting FIFA Threatens New Zealands Peaceful Reputation "IndyWatch Feed National"

By World BEYOND War Aotearoa, July 25, 2023

A global peace network has called out the U.S. Secretary of States visit to New Zealand  as a threat to our peaceful reputation and not good old-fashioned sports diplomacy, as described by our Foreign Minister.

If Secretary Blinken was coming to New Zealand solely to support the peaceful U.S. womens FIFA soccer team, then Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta could justifiably welcome him as a close friend and partner, says World BEYOND War Aotearoa spokesman, Hon. Matt Robson, former Minister of Disarmament.

But he says the actual purpose of Blinkens trip is to drag New Zealand further into aggressive plans for the containment of Americas economic competitor, China.

Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta, representing New Zealands  peace and diplomacy policies, needs to advise Mr Blinken that New Zealand, a signatory to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, does not support NATOs condemnation of that treaty.

Furthermore it does not agree with using the 400-plus US military bases from Japan to Australia, many of which are nuclear-armed, to threaten China, our largest trading partner.

Failure to do this, and agreeing to nuclear armed NATOs provocations against China, undermines the nuclear free status of New Zealand, and the antiwar policies that New Zealanders have developed, for which New Zealand has been praised, says Mr Robson.

The New Zealand public deserves to be made aware, not least by the media, of the implications of Blinkens visit and the costs and dangers of unthinking subordination of New Zealand interests to US strategy against China, says Mr Robson.

How dangerous is the European far-right ? "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

As is usual with trends of all kinds, some recent electoral successes for far-right parties in Europe have been extrapolated into a narrative in which the rise of the far-right is just about unstoppable.

That narrative took a blow with the recent Spanish elections in which the far-right Vox party performed poorly and its coalition with the traditional conservative Popular Party failed to secure a majority. Possibly as a result, the leader of the German CDU backed away from a suggestion that his party might go into a similar coalition with the AfD. And a similar coalition government in Finland appears to be on the verge of collapse.

From the other side of the world, its hard to know what to make of all this, but important to try to understand it. So, Ill toss out some thoughts and invite readers closer to the action to set me straight.

As I wrote a few years ago, the rise of a Trump-style far right has been driven by the collapse of the neoliberal consensus that dominated politics throughout the capitalist world from the 1970s, with power alternating between hard neoliberalism (represented by traditional conservative parties) and soft neoliberalism (represented by formerly socialist and social democratic parties). As the failures of neoliberalism became undeniable, there was no longer enough support to sustain two neoliberal parties, and alternatives began to emerge on both left and right.

The most dramatic manifestation of this process on the right has been Donald Trumps takeover of the US Republican party, which is now well to the right of any of the European far-right parties (with the possible exception of Fidesz in Hungary), and still commands around 50 per cent electoral support.

In Europe, though the more common party has been the rise of a far-right party commanding around 20 per cent of the vote. In most cases, this doesnt look to me like an upsurge in the popularity of rightwing ideas. Rather, this 20 per cent has always been there, waiting for the circumstances in which views that are normally unacceptable can gain political expression.

In my own home state of Queensland, for example, the racist One Nation party scored more than 20 per cent of the votes in a state election in 1998, before fading back into single digits.

A 20 per cent vote for the far-right enough to make it difficult for traditional conservatives to win government in their own right, but usually not enough for the far-right to lead a government of their own. Hence, the contortions mentioned above.

A lot of attention has been focused on the neo-fascist origins of some of the fa...

Climate Change: Unfucking the ETS "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Earlier in the month Lawyers for Climate Action won a historic victory, overturning labour's 2022 ETS settings decision, which had crashed the carbon market. The courts told the government to go back to the drawing board and do it again and come up with ETS settings that complied with the law. Today, the government released its response. The full settings are here, and they have largely followed the Climate Commission's advice. On price, they've adopted the Commission's advice completely, so from December we'll have a CCR trigger price of $173, and from next year we'll have a two-tier CCR triggering at $184 and $230. Which is high enough that it should never happen, meaning those units will never be released. On volume - the measure which matters - they've differed a little from the Commission advice, likely because they're trying to mash two sets of Commission advice together. But the court-granted ability to adjust this year's settings means they've ripped 2.9 million tons out of 2023, giving a number even lower than that originally recommended by the Commission. The table below shows auction volumes without the CCR, to make them easy to compare (the 2023 Commission figures are adjusted to account for the fact that there has been no CCR release in 2023):

Year Current settings New settings CC 2022 (p45) CC 2023 (p 42, ignoring step 7a)
2023 17.9 15.0 16.3 -
2024 17.1 14.2 15.6 13.6
2025 15.3 12.6 14.0 12.0

Total (2023-7) 75.5 61.6 68.5 -
Total (2024-8) - 53.5 - 51.1

Woodside Energy [ASX:WDS] Up as Crude Over 52-Week High "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Oil and gas giant Woodside Energy Group [ASX:WDS] shares are up by 1% today, trading at $37.62 per share as commodity prices continue to rise.

LNG and oil are up today, with Brent crude and WTI oil above the 52-week moving average price. Signs of tighter supplies and pledges from Chinas leaders are the primary drivers as oil continues its fourth week of gains.

The timing could not be better for Woodside, who faced downward pressure last week after releasing its second-quarter report, which showed production and revenue were down from Q123.

Despite bumps in Q2 performance, Woodsides share price is still up by 22.46% in the past 12 months as more investors move into the supply-constrained sector and realise the limitations of the promised energy transition.

Woodsides quarterly update

Woodside shares are up 1% today, reversing any losses in share price after a shaky second-quarter report released last week.

Despite delivering fairly reliable production and sales volume, both experienced declines compared to the previous quarter due to planned turnaround and maintenance activities.

The company delivered quarterly production of 44.5 MMboe (489 Mboe/day), down by 5% from Q123.

As a result, revenues decreased by 29% from the first quarter with an average of $63/boe.

Woodside CEO Med ONeil commented on the Q2 update, saying:

Strong underlying operational performance in the second quarter was impacted by planned turnaround and maintenance activities, particularly at the onshore Pluto LNG facility and associated offshore facilities in WA.

Congressional Concerns: Stalling Nuclear Submarines for Australia "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Australian Independent Media July 23, 2023,  Dr Binoy Kampmark

Any security arrangement with too many variables and multiple contingencies, risks stuttering and keeling over. Critical delays might be suffered, attributable to a number of factors beyond the parties concerned. Disputes and disagreements may surface. Such an arrangement is AUKUS, where the number of cooks risk spoiling any meal they promise to cook.

The main dish here comprises the nuclear-powered submarines that are meant to make their way to Australian shores, both in terms of purchase and construction. It marks what the US, UK and Australia describe as the first pillar of the agreement. Ostensibly, they are intended for the island continents self-defence, declared as wholesomely and even desperately necessary in these dangerous times. Factually, they are intended as expensive toys for willing vassals, possibly operated by Australian personnel, at the beckon call of US naval and military forces, monitoring Chinese forces and any mischief they might cause.

While the agreement envisages the creation of specific AUKUS submarines using a British design, supplemented by US technology and Australian logistics, up to three Virgini...

Duttons Nuclear Folly: Small Modular Reactors a political mirage "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

by Rex Patrick | Jul 23, 2023  https://michaelwest.com.au/duttons-nuclear-folly-small-modular-reactors-a-political-mirage/

As Peter Dutton talks up nuclear power, it is not surprising to see Andrew Liveris shifting his pitch from a gas led recovery to a call for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to be considered for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Dutton is engaged in politics, Liveris in fantasy. Rex Patrick reports on the nuclear distraction.

Whats a Small Modular Reactor?

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are nuclear powered reactors with an electrical power output of less than 300 megawatts (MW).

Wireless technology poses credible risk on wildlife

Research has exposed the risks posed by electromagnetic radiation from Wi-Fi and cell towers to birds, mammals, insects and even plants, writes Reynard Loki.

THERE IS GROWING evidence that our addiction to cell phones could be impacting brain functionality and be the cause of stress, anxiety, insomnia, and a lack of attention and focus.

A 2017 report found that human beings are not the only living things to be affected by societys increasing dependence on wireless technology. Mammals, birds, insects and even plants are likely being harmed by the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emanating from Wi-Fi, cell phone towers, broadcast transmitters and power lines, according to an analysis of 97 peer-reviewed studies conducted by EKLIPSE, a biodiversity and ecosystem project funded by the European Union.

Impact on birds

The researchers said that evidence is accumulating that mammals (e.g. bats and mice) have a magnetic sense that is affected by radio-frequency-modulated electromagnetic fields (RF-EMR). Birds in particular may be highly susceptible. The researchers found that even weak magnetic fields in the radio frequency range can disrupt birds magnetoreception, their ability to use the Earths magnetic fields to orient themselves and find their way home.

Homing pigeons are well-known for their magnetoreception, but this sense has also been detected in other animals like red foxes. There is evidence that even large mammals like deer use the planets magnetic fields to sense direction. A number of invertebrates, including worms, molluscs and fruit flies also use this ability.

The Big Switch "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Our neighbour came over for an apero yesterday. She told us about her poor father:

Hes 96 years old. He and my mother have been married more than 70 years. But he pointed to her last week and asked me: Whos that woman?

Its sad. Hes lived in that house for 50 yearsbut he cant remember where the bathroom is.

When he got the COVID virus, we all thought he was going to die. But he just lost his mind.

What has to happen will happen, sooner or later. Often, it takes longer than you expect.

The Fed has increased its key lending rate faster and more than any Fed ever did. But the stock market hasnt crashed. Unemployment is still low. And were still waiting for the recession.

How come?

The big switch

Last week, we were exploring the issue. The secret, we believe, is that the federales have lost their minds. The Trump Team went bonkers in the COVID Hysteria with a deficit of US$4.2 trillion in 2020then the Biden Bunch followed up with another US$1.4 trillion deficit in 2021.

In the meantime

Its still inflate or die. But now, consumer prices are coming downand the economy still lives. The reason, we believe, is that the source of inflation has largely switched from the monetary front (the Feds interest rates) to the fiscal front (federal deficits). The Fed is still lending at around zero cost in real terms. But now, in addition, the federal government is running the biggest budget deficits in history.

Inflation refers, technically, to an increase in the money supplywhich typically leads to an increase in prices. In todays global economy, you dont even have to spike your own punchbowl; about half of the worlds central banks are still lending money below the inflation ratesome as low as 6% below consumer price increases. Some of it is likely to leak in your direction.

But there are other ways to enliven a party. Turn up the music. Bring in a stripper. Pass out the hard drugs.

For the last 12 months, the US Government has been throwing the biggest shindig in history spending about $130 billion per week or nearly 14% more than the year beforeand 40% more than before the COVID era blowout.

Bank bailoutsthe slaughter in Ukrainea boondoggle for the silicon chip industry it adds up. And now, Government spending is headed toward 39% of the US economy (see below). Not since the Second World War has so much of US output been squandered by the Government.

Two long term trends on a collision course

In last Tuesdays Daily Reckoning Australia, we looked at the powerful drivers that propelled the S&P 500 to an extraordinary 48-fold gain over the past four decades.

The period of gain which has been almost, but not quite, all my adult life is why we expect the share market to be our retirement benefactor for the remainder of our adult lives.

It has gone on for so long that we simply expect itll continue in a business as usual fashion. But thats not how long-term cycles work.

As potential corruption revealed, Albanese Government must urgently evacuate the survivors of offshore detention "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Albanese Government must immediately evacuate the 75 remaining survivors of offshore detention from Papua New Guinea and shut down its detention centres on Nauru, as it accounts for the multi-million-dollar secret payments that have propped up offshore detention over the past decade.

Investigative reports this week have revealed multi-million-dollar payments by government contractors to politicians in Papua New Guinea and Nauru. Reports suggest that these payments were made with the knowledge of the Department of Home Affairs, and even senior government figures in Australia.

It has also been revealed that the former Morrison government entered a secret deal with the Papua New Guinean Government to continue payments to provide for the 75 people left behind in PNG. This came after PNGs Supreme Court shut down formal regional processing arrangements and the Australian Government claimed to have no ongoing involvement.

Together, these reports reveal the corruption and duplicity at the heart of offshore detention. They also raise serious questions around the Albanese Governments continued expenditure on regional processing operations in both Nauru and PNG.

In light of these reports, the Human Rights Law Centre is calling on the Albanese Government to immediately bring the 75 people still remaining in Papua New Guinea to Australia and provide permanent safety, as a first step to ending the long-running and systematic abuse.

Farhad Bandesh, an artist and musician who was previously detained on Manus Island, said:

In Manus Island, we saw everyday acts of corruption, exploitation and censorship that were designed to keep us detained and keep the detention camp operating. Now, we hear that this kind of corruption was likely widespread, and could have involved senior politicians and officials on both sides. This is what happens when a government creates opportunities for people to profit from the torture of other people. This is the reality of a system designed to create suffering. The only solution now is to bring all the people remaining in Papua New Guinea to safety, and shut down this system once and for all.

Mehrdad, an engineer who was previously detained on Manus Island, said:

I was detained for years on Manus, attacked in the riots that cost Reza Berati his life. Australian-funded contractors were allowed to attack and kill us Australian tax dollars paid for what was done to me. I have friends from that time who are still stuck in PNG. Before a Royal Commission or any investigation, the governments first responsibility is to bring everyone to safety.

Climate Change: Turning the supertanker around "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Newsroom reports on StatsNZ's latest estimate of greenhouse gas emissions, and the news is hopeful: gross emissions have dropped, and are now at their lowest level in at least nine years:

A drop in greenhouse gas emissions due to Covid-19 measures was sustained well beyond the end of movement restrictions and lockdowns, new data shows.

In fact, climate pollution continued to fall through all of 2022, with the December 2022 quarter delivering the lowest figure in at least nine years barring the period covering the first lockdown, Statistics New Zealand reported on Thursday. While the pace of the decline isn't yet sufficient to meet New Zealand's climate goals, it suggests we have well and truly bent the emissions curve and are on our (slow but steady) way to a net-zero economy.

Digging into the detail, the biggest drops were in electricity generation, manufacturing, and agriculture and forestry. Part of this is weather-related - its been a good year for hydro, so a bad year for coal and gas. But manufacturing emissions have dropped because major polluters have closed down (e.g. Marsden Point) or are cleaning up in response to (then-)high carbon prices. As for agriculture and forestry, in December 2022 we had had years of rising carbon prices, and so years of dirty inefficient farming being replaced by clean, efficient trees. Unfortunately transport emissions are still rising, but there's a clear policy path which should turn that around as well. And we're still well behind other developed countries, which have reduced their emissions significantly while ours have risen.

...which leaves us with the giant cow in the room. While agricultural emissions have dropped slightly, its not nearly by enough. we need real policy in this area, and the government's he waka eke noa bullshit won't cut it. Either we need to price agricultural emissions by including them in the ETS at the processor level, or we need to use a regulatory scheme of using the NAIT database to cap cow numbers and manage them down directly. The alternative is an unmanaged decline, as Fonterra destroys its own markets and the cyclones they cause destroy their production. Having actual policy seems less cruel.

Demanding IPEF timeline threatens to undermine open and inclusive process of negotiations "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

25 July, 2023: There has been increasing criticism of the process for negotiating the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) with the recent conclusion of the fourth round IPEF negotiations in Busan, South Korea which reported incremental progress.

The Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) is a regional forum initiated by the US that proponents say will strengthen economic cooperation between its 14 participants and divert supply chains away from China. IPEF, unlike traditional trade agreements, does not include market access commitments like lower tariffs. Instead, the main incentives are increased investment and capacity building projects in addition to commitments to improve human rights, labour rights and environmental standards in the region.

The US has set an ambitious timeline to conclude IPEF negotiations before the US-held Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November. However, there are concerns that US pressure to quickly conclude IPEF is harming the transparency of the process, even for negotiators.

Increasingly limited stakeholder consultation

IPEF promised to be a new model of progressive trade arrangements which prioritises high labour, environmental and human rights standards. The rhetoric of IPEF has centred heavily on inclusivity and engagement during negotiations.

However, from the start of discussions, the US has prevented IPEF countries from revealing the negotiating texts until 5 years after the negotiations are completed. This is a year longer than for The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, a previous trade agreement widely criticised as opaque and corporate-dominated.

Despite the announcement of the substantial conclusion of pillar 2 supply chain negotiations in Detroit in May, the text of the completed agreement has still not been released. IPEF governments have not responded to calls from AFTINET and other civil society groups to release the text.

This marks a step back for both the negotiating text and concluded text. In 2016, negotiators did release the concluded text of the TPP at this stage to the public, showing that the...

Call for a super profit tax to create affordable housing is on the mark "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Joe Montero

One of Australias biggest unions. The Construction Forestry Mining Maritime and Energy Union (CFMMEU) is launching a push for a major rise in government investment on affordable housing. The unions national secretary Zach smith says this is necessary to take on the housing crisis that so many are facing in his country.

The union had commissioned Oxford Economics to analyse of the impact of a super profits tax on the biggest corporations to fund the construction of new affordable homes. The resulting proposal is a permanent 40 percent tax on super profits for companies with a turnover of over $100 million a year. This would apply to only 0.3 percent of companies and would raise around $29 billion a year and go a long way towards meeting the need for 750,000 new dwellings.

Photo from The Australian: CFMMEU National Construction Division secretary Zach Smith

Proposing a super profits tax might seem like quite a radical move. It isnt. Its the least of what is needed for Australia to meet its obligation as a signatory to the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which codified and mandated housing as essential to human right.

Even if this convention didnt exist, adequate housing for all would be taken up by a society that values the principle that dignity and a standard of living in line with community expectations should be available to all.

Australia has a responsibility to ensure this becomes a reality.

Advocates of social housing have long been pushing for far more action to meet the need. Programs to date, including the current Housing Austral...

Google guilty of ad-fraud againsts its customers including NYTimes, Reuters, Wired, Mashable and Gizmodo "IndyWatch Feed National"

Did Google mislead advertisers about TrueView skippable in-stream ads for the past three years?

This report finds that advertisers including Fortune 500 brands, the US federal government, and many small businesses may have been misled for years about Googles proprietary TrueView skippable in-stream video ads. This misalignment may have cost media buyers up to billions of digital ad dollars, which were ultimately spent on small, muted, out-stream, auto-playing or interstitial video ad units running on independent websites and mobile apps.

TrueView is Google's proprietary cost-per-view, choice-based ad format that serves on YouTube, millions of apps, and across the web. With TrueView, advertisers only pay for actual views of their ads, rather than impressions. TrueView asks users if they want to skip the video ad after 5 seconds with a visual prompt. Googles policies state that TrueView ads must be skippable, audible, and playing of the video (and ad) cannot be solely initiated by passive user scrolling.

However, this research report finds that for years, significant quantities of TrueView skippable in-stream ads, purchased by many different brands and media agencies, appear to have been served on hundreds of thousands of websites and apps in which the consumer experience did not meet Googles stated quality standards. For example, many TrueView in-stream ads were served muted and auto-playing as out-stream video or as obscured video players on independent sites. Often, there was little to no organic video media content between ads, the video units simply played ads only.

Voting 'Yes' to the Voice is about more than just politics "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Voting 'Yes' to the Voice is about more than just politics

Despite the limitations and shortcomings of the proposed Voice to Parliament, the 'Yes' campaign remains the favourable outcome, writes John Card.

IT'S NO SECRET that the many various groups and personalities on the activist Left in this country don't all see completely eye-to-eye on the impending Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum. While the far-Right gets to be unanimous in its frothing hatred of the Voice and its intent to vote No, most of us progressives have been forced to take a much more nuanced position.

The push for a Voice to Parliament started back in 2017, when the Uluru Statement from the Heart petitioned the Coalition Government for some sort of Indigenous representation to be enshrined in the Australian Constitution. The Uluru Statement was the culmination of years of meetings between hundreds of Indigenous leaders from all over the country, but despite not asking for more than a seat at the table in Canberra, then-PM Malcolm Turnbull called the Statement's proposed Voice not desirable and flatly rejected the idea.

Turnbull's successor, Scott Morrison, spent his time in office frequently and...

Zelensky's 'cannon fodder': The strange lives and pointless deaths of foreign mercenaries fighting in Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed National"

"My mates have died, and are dying. I've seen things out here that, from a military perspective, are beyond unacceptable," says one Australian fighter From the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine, thousands of foreign mercenaries have joined Ukraine's Armed Forces. They came to Ukraine from all over the world, but mostly from Poland, the US, and Canada. Recently, however, it seems that their interest in fighting for Kiev has significantly faded. This is evident both from estimates provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense and from foreign media reports. Mercenaries are losing interest Since February 24, 2022, a projected 11,675 foreign mercenaries from 84 countries have joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was stated by the Russian Ministry of Defense on July 10. Geopolitical competition and Solomon Islands: navigating the middle ground "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Geopolitical competition can have adverse impact on third-party countries. We are seeing this in Solomon Islands, where domestic political discourses at least in Honiara and on social media are dominated by the countrys relationships with China and the US and its allies. These are characterised by divergent opinions that have caused divisions that could have long-term negative effects on Solomon Islands.

On one side are those who perceive China (and its flotilla of state officials, companies, citizens and investors) as a saviour of Solomon Islands, and its intentions as purely benevolent and infallible. They highlight the role of the Chinese state and Chinese companies in infrastructure developments, such as the newly built national stadium, Munda airport terminal, Solomon Islands National Universitys Panatina office and classroom complex, and the Mongga Bridge in East Central Guadalcanal. But they often do not mention that while most of these projects were built by Chinese contractors, they were financed by other funding agencies such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the Solomon Islands government. The China proponents decry the US and its allies, and ignore Australias 13-year and $2.6 billion investment in RAMSI (Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands), or dismiss it as largely beneficial to Australia through boomerang aid. They present themselves as defenders of China in Solomon Islands.

On the other side of the debate are those who dislike China because they see it as a one-party communist dictatorship. They highlight its suppression of minorities such as Uyghurs, and the corruptive influence of Chinese entrepreneurs, and they accuse Beijing of being anti-Christian. They contrast this to the US and other Western countries that they consider as hallmarks of liberal democracy, which Solomon Islands should emulate. They present China as a monolithic entity with total control by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This is despite the complex web of Chinese actors with sometimes differing interests, and the fact that the CCP might not necessarily have control over all of them. This group is generally uncritical of Western countries colonial histories, including the US, Great Britain and Frances nuclear weapons testing in the region. They are vehemently anti-China and wear it as a badge of honour.

These groups with differing opinions shout at each other, mostly on social media. This has caused divisions, for example between the national government and the Daniel Suidani-led Malaita provincial government. Such divisions are socially corrosive and could degenerate into violence, as seen in the November 2021 riots in Honiara.

However, there is a middle ground for constructive conversation. This should emphasise how the Solomon Islands government could manage its engagements w...

Australia fact of the day "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Health officials have virtually eliminated HIV transmission in parts of Sydney that were once the centre of the Australian Aids epidemic, raising hopes of conquering a disease that has killed more than 40mn people.

HIV diagnoses in inner Sydney plunged 88 per cent from the 2008-12 average to just 11 cases last year, a decline on a scale never before recorded in a former Aids hotspot.

The results add to evidence that existing prevention strategies, including testing and pre-exposure drugs, are highly effective when implemented correctly.

Rapid progress towards ending Aids is possible. If trends continue, several countries in several global regions will reach the [UN] goal of a 90 per cent HIV incidence reduction by 2030, researchers said.

Here is the full FT story.  As I have been saying people, you are living in a new age of biomedical miracles.

Celebrate Plastic Free July With These 23 Easy Ways to Cut Back on Single-Use Plastics "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Its just a plastic fork, just a takeout container, just one water bottle.

Not exactly.

Indulging in the modern convenience of single-use plastics seems harmless, but the consequences to our health, wildlife, and oceans will be with us for a long time to come. Globally, we produce 300 million tons of plastic annually, about half of which is single-use items and 8 million tons of that plastic reaches oceans every year. By 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the sea.

One reason for plastics well-deserved bad reputation is that it never truly breaks down rather, it breaks apart into increasingly tinier pieces through the forces of light, heat, and other environmental factors until it becomes microplastics. These microscopic pieces have reached virtually every corner of the Earth: the deepest oceans, highest mountains, the tissues of the fish and animals that we consume, and even our own blood and lungs.

Sure, recycling is one important solution to our plastic crisis, but only 9% of plastic actually gets recycled. Therefore, its crucial that we curb our production and consumption of plastic, and fast.

Thats where Plastic Free July comes in: a global challenge to reduce single-use plastics. The project was begun by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz in Australia in 2011, and is now a part of the nonprofit Plastic Free Foundation, formed in 2017. On the organizations website, people can take the pledge to reduce their plastic waste at any level: for a day, a week, a month; to avoid single-use packaging exclusively, or go completely plastic free.

But how do you get started? Use this simple guide to consider areas of your life and home in which you can easily reduce plastic waste with a few swaps to reusables, or different methods that sidestep plastic altogether. Remember: Plastic Free July isnt about being perfect. Its very difficult to completely remove plastic from your life especially given accessibility and economic barriers to some elements of sustainable living  but about reducing your consumption wherever you are able.

Voice Referendum Polling: No Leads / Indigenous Support Levels "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

TWO-ANSWER TREND ESTIMATE YES 47.8 (-2.8 in four weeks)

Aggregated polls have Yes losing in five states and trailing the national average in three (two narrowly)

(Above estimates may be updated if new polls are added in next few weeks)

----

Greetings.  I was going to call this article "Welcome to No" but thought of some wrong ways that that could be taken.

Four weeks ago my last Voice update still had Yes very slightly ahead but the lead was not long for this world.  Unsurprisingly in this edition Yes is still going downhill rapidly and is now clearly behind in my aggregated estimate.  The most recently added polls are Newspoll with a 46-54 result and Resolve with 48-52 (and an even worse 36-42-22 prior to the forced-choice question).

A Yes campaign that started deeply underwater by historic referendum standards is sinking further by the same standards with virtually every poll but many Yes supporters are still hoping that as the campaign ramps up, football final season breeds enthusiasm (I'm not really sure how that works) and greater Yes resources are deployed things will turn around.  That would be a new thing in the history of referendums if it happened, but this is an unusual referendum and one conducted in a very different campaigning environment to those in the past.

I've been surprised at quite the speed Yes has declined at since I started writing about Voice polling in April.  At first it was not clear that the decline was accelerating.

With no signs of anything stopping the trend so far, there is increasing speculation about what a No vote would mean.  One thing that is for sure is that if the Voice does not get up a vast amount of money and energy will have been expended on a campaign for an advisory body that was supposed to encourage Parliament on how to "close the gap" - resources that could have been spent doing so, if anyone spending the money knew how.

There's even been some talk of calling the whole thing off or delaying it til next year because of the perceived consequences of failure but one can only imagine the ridicule that would be poured on a PM who started a referendum believing it would win then ran away because of skanky pollz.   What is this, the Commonwealth Games?

Anyway here's the graph again:

The music industry pressures of stardom and life on the road make it hard for marriages and relationships to last. So youd expect musical spouses would not choose to work together.

A surprising number of them do work together, creating successful and enduring musical and personal partnerships. One of the most successful happened here in Australia.

In the 1940s, a young singer called Slim Dusty was on tour, where he met Joy, one half of the McKean Sisters. Joy and Heather were big radio stars then, while Slim was relatively unknown.

Joy and Slim got married, and Joy was Slims manager for 50 years, writing many of his most popular songs. Together, they made more than 100 albums, won awards aplenty, and toured like no other act.

Court rules Ed did not steal Marvins song "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Songs often sound similar. Theres a limited number of notes and chords, and a huge number of hit songs have been been built with the popular 1-5-6-4 chord progression. In the key of C, thats CGA minorF. Its a phenomenon lovingly parodied by Aussie band Axis of Awesome in their marvellous Four Chord Song

Similar songs often end up in court, where judges and juries are asked to decide whether one writer has copied another. Its sometimes impossible, and worse, its often ridiculous, and opportunistic. Theres only so many notes and chord progressions, so inevitably theres going to be similarities. Could a writer sue another for using some of the same words?

Ed Sheeran is the latest to be sued, by the heirs of someone who wrote Marvin Gayes marvellous Whats Going On. The jury says Ed did not infringe.

Its hard to imagine a world without Tina Turner "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Tina Turner was a very big star twice in the same lifetime. First time round, she was the real talent in the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, a high-energy touring funk and soul phenomenon. Tina could sing, dance, move, put on a show, better than anyone in the business. This made her husband wealthy, and jealous. Tina endured years of violence and misery, finally leaving him on tour in Texas.

Lean years followed, but Tina found an ally in Australian music promoter Roger Davies, who signed her up in 1980, getting her well paid Las Vegas gigs, steering her on the way to multi-platinum albums through the 80s. Borrowings: La Trobe Uni and the lessons for UTAS "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

La Trobe University (LU) today announced its intention to raise funds via a Green Bond issue following in the footsteps of UTAS Green Bond raising of $350 million in the 2022 year.

The amount to be raised is not known at this stage and is irrelevant for the purpose of this note which is to have a quick look at the requirements/restrictions for LU to raise money in this manner and provide the current Leg Co Committee looking into UTAS with information which may assist their deliberations.

What lessons are there for UTAS?

The term Green Bond is essentially a term from a marketing department designed to pique interest, possibly in the hope that an investor may accept a slightly lower rate of interest as a trade off to saving the planet. A Green Bond is a security just like any other bond. Bonds are alternatives to loans and other borrowing like arrangements.

LU is an entity created by the La Trobe University Act 2009, a Victorian Act. Borrowing powers are covered by Sec 45:

45           Borrowing powers

 (1) Subject to this Act, for the purpose of carrying out or performing any of its powers, authorities, duties or functions, the University may

(a) borrow money at interest by way of mortgage, overdraft with an ADI or otherwise; or

(b) without limiting paragraph (a)

(i) obtain financial accommodation within the meaning of section 3 of the Borrowing and Investment Powers Act 1987; or

(ii) enter into and perform financial arrangements within the meaning of that section of that Act.

(2) Subsection (1) applies within the limits and upon the conditions...

US, Australia launch largest-ever joint military exercise, claim it should serve as a 'message to China' "IndyWatch Feed National"

The US and Australia on Friday launched the largest-ever iteration of their Talisman Sabre exercise as the US is increasingly focused on building alliances in the Asia Pacific against China. The Talisman Sabre started in 2005 as a biennial exercise between the US and Australia. This year's iteration involves participants from 11 other countries and over 30,000 military personnel. US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro spoke at the opening ceremony on Friday and said the massive drills served as a warning to China. "The most important message that China can take from this exercise and anything that our allies and partners do together is that we are extremely tied by the core values that exist among our many nations together," he said at a naval base in Sydney. Comment: It seems that not all of the allies are so comfortable with sacrificing their nations on behalf of the ailing US empire: 'Most dangerous moment in world politics': US, China heading for conflict, and it's not clear whether...

Nevil Shutes On the Beach warned us of nuclear annihilation. Its still a hot-button issue with a new play at the Sydney Theatre Company "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

ABC News The Conversation / By Alexander Howard, 23 Jul 23

.. the nuclear threat is still very much at the top of our collective mind.

The Sydney Theatre Company is staging the very first stage adaptation of Shutes novel On the Beach. And Oppenheimer, one of 2023s two most-hyped films, tells the story of the man referred to as the father of the atomic bomb.

British-born Shute emigrated in 1950 to Australia, where he lived outside Melbourne. As well as writing novels, he worked as an aeronautical engineer.

AUKUS nuclear waste dump is the secret no-one talks about. So whatll it cost? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

The $360 billion cost of AUKUS might be startling, but on top of that is another undiscussed figure: the cost of building storage for nuclear waste.

Crikey, DAVID HARDAKER, JUL 24, 2023

In late 2021, it came as a shock when Australia woke up to find that its government, under then-prime minister Scott Morrison, had secretly agreed to join the nuclear submarine club with old friends, the US and the UK.

The secret within that secret was that Australia would be responsible for the radioactive waste generated by its involvement in the AUKUS program. For the first time, Australia had signed up to construct a storage facility for high-grade nuclear waste, robust enough to last 1000 years.

Australia had never done it. Nor the US. Nor the UK. Was the iron-clad commitment to building a waste dump part of the deal struck by Morrison when he announced the AUKUS partnership? If so, he didnt mention it at the time. Nor was it mentioned by US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak or Australia...

Aboriginal and veteran delegates tell Australian parliament the horrors of nuclear testing

By Gem Romuld, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Australia

In mid-June, four special people who know intimately the personal impacts of nuclear weapons testing, on physical health, mental health, and on the land, travelled to Parliament House in Canberra, Australias capital city.

The four were:

Karina Lester: Yankunytjatjara Anangu woman, senior Aboriginal language worker, ICAN Ambassador. Karinas late father was blinded by the Totem 1 nuclear test at Emu Field.

June Lennon: Yankunytjatjara, Antikarinya and Pitjantjatjara woman who survived the Totem 1 nuclear test as a baby. Her mother, Lallie, and brother Bruce, were recipients of compensation due to their ill-health, caused by radioactive contamination.

Douglas Brooks: was stationed at Monte Bello Islands as a serving member of the Royal Australian Navy in 1956. He was aboard HMS Alert when a 98 kiloton nuclear bomb was detonated just ten miles away, exposing him and the rest of the crew to the full blast of the explosion.

Maxine Goodwin: is the daughter of an Australian nuclear veteran, who became ill as a result of his involvement in the first atomic test in Western Australia. He passed away at 49, leading Maxine to a lifelong search for the truth on how the tests have affected veterans and their families.

The delegates brought their expertise and personal testimonies to speak with parliamentarians about recognition, respect, and repair, and to urge Australia to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

They spoke about the shock of witnessing a n...

The Empire Knows Its Pouring Ukrainian Blood Into An Unwinnable Proxy War "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Thats right kids! Were turning Ukraine into an uninhabitable wasteland of death and dismemberment to save the Ukrainians

.

Caitlins Newsletter CAITLIN JOHNSTONE, JUL 24, 2023

In a new article titled Ukraines Lack of Weaponry and Training Risks Stalemate in Fight With Russia, The Wall Street Journals Daniel Michaels reports that western officials knew Ukrainian forces didnt have the weapons and training necessary to succeed in their highly touted counteroffensive which was launched last month.

Michaels writes:

The claim that western officials had sincerely believed Ukrainian forces might be able to overcome their glaring deficits through sheer pluck and ticker is undermined later in the same article by a war pundit who says the US would never attempt such a counteroffensive without first controlling the skies, which Ukraine doesnt have the ability to do:

America would never attempt to defeat a prepared defense without air superiority, but they [Ukrainians] dont have air superiority, the U.S. Army War Colleges John Nagl told WSJ. Its impossible to overstate how important air superiority is for fighting a ground fight at a reasonable cost in casualties.

Antiwars Dave DeCamp writes the following on the latest WSJ revelation:

Leading up to the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which was launched in June, the Discord leaks and media reports revealed that the US did not believe Ukraine could regain much territory from Russia. But the Biden administration pushed for the assault anyway, as it rejected the idea of a pause in fighting.

So the empire is still knowingly throwing Ukrainian lives into the meat grinder of an unwinnable proxy war, even as western officials tell the public that this war is about saving Ukrainian lives and handi...

If Everybodys Going to Join NATO, Then Why Have the United Nations? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Slowly, NATO is positioning itself as a substitute for the UN, suggesting that it and not the actual international community is the arbiter and guardian of the worlds interests, security, and values.

Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. by VJ Prashad, 20 July 23

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) held its annual summit on 1112 July in Vilnius, Lithuania. The communiqu released after the first days proceedings claimed that NATO is a defensive alliance, a statement that encapsulates why many struggle to grasp its true essence. A look at the latest military spending figures shows, to the contrary, that NATO countries, and countries closely allied to NATO, account for nearly three-quarters of the total annual global expenditure on weapons.

untries closely allied to NATO, account for nearly three-quarters of the total annual global expenditure on weapons. Many of these countries possess state-of-the-art weapons systems, which are qualitatively more destructive than those held by the militaries of most non-NATO countries. Over the past quarter century, NATO has used its military might to destroy several states, such as Afghanistan (2001) and Libya (2011), shattering societies with the raw muscle of its aggressive alliance, and end the status of Yugoslavia (1999) as a unified state. It is difficult, given this record, to sustain the view that NATO is a defensive alliance.

. NATOs increasing membership has doubled down on its ambition to use its military power, through Article 5, to subdue anyone who challenges the Atlantic Alliance.

The Atlantic Alliance, a phrase that is part of NATOs name, was part of a wider network of military treaties secured by the US against the USSR and, after October 1949, against the Peoples Republic of China.

This network included the Manila Pact of September 1954, which created the Southeast Asian Treaty Organisation (SEATO), and the Baghdad Pact of February 1955, which created the Central Treaty Organisation (CENTO). Turkey and Pakistan signed a military agreement in April 1954 which brought them together in an alliance against the USSR and anchored this network through NATOs southernmost member (Turkey) and SEATOs westernmost member (Pakistan). The US signed a military deal with eac...

Ukraines Lack of Weaponry and Training Risks Stalemate in Fight With Russia "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

U.S. and Kyiv knew of shortfalls but Kyiv still launched offensive

WSJ, By Daniel Michaels, July 22, 2023

BRUSSELSWhen Ukraine launched its big counteroffensive this spring, Western military officials knew Kyiv didnt have all the training or weaponsfrom shells to warplanesthat it needed to dislodge Russian forces. But they hoped Ukrainian courage and resourcefulness would carry the day.

They havent. Deep and deadly minefields, extensive fortifications and Russian air power have combined to largely block significant advances by Ukrainian troops. Instead, the campaign risks descending into a stalemate with the potential to burn through lives and equipment without a major shift in momentum.

As the likelihood of any large-scale breakthrough by the Ukrainians this year dims, it raises the unsettling prospect for Washington and its allies of a longer warone that would require a huge new infusion of sophisticated armaments and more training to give Kyiv a chance at victory.

The political calculus for the Biden administration is complicated. President Biden is up for re-election in the fall of 2024 and many in Washington believe concerns in the White House about the wars impact on the campaign are prompting growing caution on the amount of support to offer Kyiv.

The American hesitation contrasts with shifting views in Europe, where more leaders over recent months have come to believe that Ukraine must prevail in the conflictand Russia must loseto ensure the continents security.

But European militaries lack sufficient resources to supply Ukraine with all it needs to eject Moscows armies from the roughly 20% of the country that they control. European leaders are also unlikely to significantly increase su...

Backgrounder on health consequences of nuclear radiation fallout and the Anthropocene "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Mary Olson July 21, 2023

Since fatal cancer and some catastrophic impacts to pregnancy originate from damage to a single living cell, there is no amount of ionizing radiation that is safe. It is therefore extremely appropriate in terms of human and environmental health, that particles of plutonium from nuclear weapons fallout has been chosen as the marker for the new geologic epoch in which the dominant force acting on this planet is us.

The Anthropocene is, so far, a time of imbalance and disease, including destabilization of our climate, destruction of natural habitat sending extinction rates up and biodiversity down, made worse by dumping new toxic chemicals widely, polluting air, water and food. Radiation from nuclear fission adds the additional scrambling of genes and genomes.

Fallout warrants an update from the health perspective. The disproportionate impact of bomb radiation on women and girls is established, and particularly troubling given the global distribution of fallout particles. However, a new paper from Dr Alfred Krblein is the first to find the correlation of very large numbers of lives lost and fallout. Krblein reports the death rate of infants (live-birt...

Shoegaze Legends Slowdive on Arvos "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Slowdive members Neil and Simon stand next in the FBi CD library room, with presetner Al Grigg in between them. All three are facing the camera for a photo.

  • :: Slowdive on Arvos with Ruby and Al

Vocalist and guitarist Neil Halstead and drummer Simon Scott of the legendary British shoegaze band Slowdive dropped by Arvos with Ruby and Al ahead of their sold out show at the Enmore Theatre last Friday night. They spoke about their upcoming album everything is alive, whether their status as one of THE shoegaze bands affected the process behind recording it, and how the chaos of the pandemic drove them to create something hopeful.

Slowdive, alongside groups like the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, are world-renowned as belonging to the first wave pioneering 1990s shoegaze bands. Upholding their lofty status wasnt, however, a concern for the five-piece when crafting their new album.

I think we have enough trouble agreeing as a band what sounds good without worrying too much about what other people are going to think.

The group began writing everything is alive, which is their fifth studio album since they began in 1989, on the minimal foundations of a series of repurposed electronic demos Neil had made for a side-project.

Once everyone gets involved it takes on its own sort of life. Thats the fun part I suppose, seeing where your ideas go. And trying not to edit too much too early, so that you can allow things to kind of go in their own direction.

Over three years at home and in the studio (the same s...

The Fascination with Jeffrey Dahmer Autopsy Photos Prison Reddit "IndyWatch Feed National"

Jeffrey Dahmer Autopsy Photos Prison Reddit

When I first stumbled upon a thread discussing Jeffrey Dahmers autopsy photos on Reddit, I was taken aback by the sheer amount of interest. Yet, its evident that theres a significant fascination with these images and their related discussions in online communities.

Why are we drawn to such dark aspects of human history? Psychologists suggest it might be due to our innate curiosity about mortality and the darker side of human nature. It could also stem from an attempt to understand what drives a person like Dahmer to commit such heinous acts. It cant be denied that Jeffrey Dahmer is an infamous figure in American true crime history. His gruesome acts while alive, and even the details surrounding his death in prison, have continually fed public curiosity. The autopsy photos serve as tangible evidence of his existence they provide a finality to his story that people find intriguing.

If youve ever ventured into any true crime subreddit, youll notice theyre filled with posts offering new perspectives or sharing information about well-known cases like Dahmers. This constant analysis reflects our collective desire for understanding and closure. Here are some elements that contribute to this fascination:

  • The macabre: Humans have always been attracted to things we consider strange or frightening.
  • The need for answers: We seek explanations for things we dont understand.
  • The thrill: Some find excitement in exploring the unknown or taboo subjects.

In conclusion (without starting my sentence off in conclusion,), as much as Jeffery Dahmers autopsy photos may seem unsettling at first glance theyre more than just grizzly keepsakes for true crime enthusiasts on Reddit; they represent our complex relationship with fear, understanding evil deeds and confronting our own mortality.

How Prison Life Factored into Dahmers Demise

Jeffrey Dahmer, often dubbed The Milwaukee Cannibal, was one of Americas most notorious serial killers. Now, Im not here to...

The journey begins in a serene and ethereal light forest, though as the narrative unfolds, the atmosphere gradually morphs into a hauntingly dark and gloomy forest. Evoking the disillusionment and uncertainty that often accompany the realisation of being deceived by someone we thought we knew, this evocative and moody visual representation enhances the impact of the songs lyrics.

Check it out below.

Known for her unique blend of electro-pop beats and melodic storytelling, Sharl quickly rose to prominence with her debut album, City Lights. Garnering attention from Australian radio, press outlets, and international music blogs, Sharl solidified her position as a rising star in the indie pop scene.

Originally from the UK, where she spent her formative years engrossed in music, songwriting, and pursuing a medical career, Sharls therapeutic music brings a unique perspective to pop.

Demonstrating sheer talent and unwavering growth, Sharl has blossomed over the past year as an independent artist, unveiling a series of singles, an ethereal and introspective debut album that explores the nuances of coming-of-age, and a collection of visually stunning music videos that showcase her at the peak of her artistryrejuvenated, confident, and wholly authentic.

Post fire recovery of Pencil Pines at Lake Mackenzie "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Back in 2016, lightning storms ignited a number of fires in central and western lutruwita/ Tasmania, which turned into large scale events that threatened the core refugia of Gondwanan vegetation, particularly the largest stands of the endemic conifer Athrotaxis cupressoides (Pencil Pines). Pencil Pines are already limited to very small areas of Tasmania. Burnt Pencil Pines are unlikely to recover given their slow growth, limited seedling establishment and projections of increased fire weather and lightning ignitions associated with drier soils.

Although the climate of western Tasmania has not changed very much, as yet, as a result of global warming, the incidence of dry lightning strikes has increased markedly from last century to the present. Therefore these type of lightning caused fires are expected to increase. This could put the very survival of Pencil Pine communities at risk.

One of the fires that created greatest concern started near Lake Mackenzie, on the north western end of the Central Plateau. Significant areas of Pencil Pines were burnt.

With scattered groves of Pines burnt, and unlikely to recover without some form of intervention, what are our options?

Seven years on from the fires, research from the University of Tasmania, shows what is being done to assist recovery.

Called Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) Bushfire Recovery: Lake Mackenzie Rehabilitation Trials Data Post-fire restoration of Pencil Pines, the primary goal of this trial was to identify best-practice methods (interventions) for restoring burnt pencil pine ( ) stands. Five study sites were selected around the Lake (three of which were burnt in 2016). Monitoring was carried out from 2018 until 2022.

Three types of intervention were undertaken to consider how recovery could be supported: direct sowing of seed, planting seedlings and protecting natural seedling growth.

Thirty-five plots were established in March 2019, to assess the practicality and effectiveness of restoring pencil pines by protecting naturally germinated seedlings from herbivores. Such seedlings were only found near living adult pencil pines, and mostly on Sphagnum.

Plots were situated where a seedling, or group of seedlings, could be enclosed within tree guard in situ. For half of these plots, tailored tree guards were constructed using stainless-steel mesh and aluminium tubes to create a perimeter impervious to vertebrate herbivores. Remaining plots were left as open controls

300 plots were established in March 2019, in which seeds were sown directly into the field. These plots were treated in...

Fire escape plan a must "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Victorias fire services are calling on households to develop or review their Home Fire Escape Plans.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and CFA respond to more than 3000 residential fire incidents across the state each year, many of which are preventable.

House fires move fast and can fill your home with smoke in a matter of minutes. They can be devastating and fatal. While the dangers of fire are very real, there is a lot you can do to protect your family and your home.

Fire Rescue Commissioner Gavin Freeman, AFSM said that families and households spending time at home this weekend should take the opportunity to make a plan together, practice it, and ensure they are well prepared.

During winter, we spend much more time inside, out of the cold, so its important to establish or revisit your Home Fire Escape Plan, Commissioner Freeman said.

Nobody wants to think about a fire in the home, but sadly in Victoria every year, on average 18 lives are lost in preventable house fires.

Knowing how to quickly exit your home in case of an emergency could mean the difference between life and death, and it is crucial that all members of the household, including children, know what to do in the event of a house fire.

CFA Chief Fire Officer Jason Heffernan said winter is a good time for Victorian residents to re-educate themselves on their Home Fire Escape Plan.

Whether you are a homeowner or renting, you should have a plan in place and practice it regularly, deciding on a safe place to meet, like the letterbox, should an emergency arise, CO Heffernan said.

To keep your loved ones safe, it is essential smoke alarms are installed in all bedrooms, living areas and hallways so everyone in the property is alerted to a fire.

The safest plan is to get down low to stay out of the smoke, close nearby doors to slow down the spread of the fire, and call triple zero once youre safely outside.

For more information on how to make a Home Fire Escape Plan, visit frv.vic.gov.au or cfa.vic.gov.au.

When making your Home Fire Escape Plan, remember:

Know what to do if a fire occurs. Whether you are a homeowner or renter, you should have a home fire escape plan in place.

Practice your plan for when there is an emergency with your whole household.

You cant escape if you have deadlocked your doors.

Tips for when there is a fire:

Get out and stay out or get down low and stay out of the smoke.

If it is safe, close doors to slow down the spread of fire and smoke.

Alert other people on your way out.

Meet at a safe place, such as the letterbox out the front of your home.

Call triple zero from a mobile phone or a neighbours phone.

How the Palestine laboratory impacted Chile "IndyWatch Feed National"

My new book, The Palestine Laboratory, opens with a personal story about the horrific Pinochet regime in Chile in the 1970s and Israels support for it.

Im therefore happy to see my book getting traction in Chile with this story in the local media:

On the 50th anniversary of the coup dtat [in Chile in 1973], the massacre that restored the oligarchic usurpation of Chile, it is decisive to hold Israel accountable for its participation in the Pinochet dictatorship and in the prolongation of its industry during the period of democracy. What involvement did Israel have in the dictatorship? We know that the coup was forged in the United States, which had the necessary support from Brazil, but it remains to elucidate the place that Israel had in this equation.

Supermarkets meet Clean-up Notices obligations "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The Clean-up Notices required the supermarkets to address the potential fire and pollution risk posed by 15 soft plastic stockpiles accumulated during the REDcycle soft plastics collection program. Photo supplied

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) say that Coles and Woolworths have met their immediate obligations under the Clean-up Notices issued by the Authority, with more than 5,000 tonnes of soft plastics moved to safe storage.

The notices required the supermarkets to address the potential fire and pollution risk posed by 15 soft plastic stockpiles accumulated during the REDcycle soft plastics collection program.

EPA Executive Director Steve Beaman said having the retailers move these stockpiles to a safe and lawful location has been a priority. Our inspections confirmed waste from 15 sites has been removed, with the majority going to a waste facility in Orchard Hills for storage.

We will continue to monitor the progress of the supermarkets under the Clean-up Notices as they consider options for recycling and reprocessing the material.

An important role to play

Mr Beaman said the largest retailers have an important role to play in how we reduce plastic waste in NSW. We want to see them taking proactive steps.

Say No to alcohol "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Geelong community groups and young people are helping parents say no to alcohol for people under 18.

Meli, Communities That Care (CTC), Barwon Health, and the Youth Advisory Group of nine young people collaborated on the campaign, which featured a video with the I Need You to Say No message.

Meli chief executive Grant Boyd said the campaign used the video, posters, social media, and educational resources to reduce the consumption of alcohol by young people under 18.

This campaign has been driven by young people urging parents and other trusted adults to step up to the challenge of saying no, which is not always easy in our society, he said.

Every day at Meli, we see the impacts of alcohol on young people and families, which is why this campaign is so important.

Parents can play a big role in influencing young peoples attitudes to drinking as well as their access to alcohol.

Barwon Healths Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol Services clinical director Professor Steve Moylan said young people were more at risk of alcohol-related harm as their brains developed.

Under-age drinking can lead to risky behaviour and injuries, mental ill-health and lead to harmful alcohol use later in life, he said.

We hope this campaign will encourage parents to re-think providing young people with alcohol. The video is a great conversation starter for families.

CTC co-ordinator Louise McDonald said reducing alcohol at a young age and encouraging parents not to supply their children with alcohol was a priority area for the not-for-profit training company.

Getting information to parents is hard, she said.

We thought that if the messages came from the young people themselves, it would be more powerful and have more of an impact.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Live in Concert is swinging into Melbourne this year "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Direct from Brooklyn and for the first time in Australia, the Academy Award-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is swinging into Melbourne for an electrifying Live in Concert experience this October.

Taking place on 21st October 2023 at The Plenary, Convention Centre, youll be able to witness the epic film soundtrack brought to life in an incredible fusion of orchestral, turntables, and electronic music, performed live alongside the big-screen action.

Keep up with the latest in local news and entertainment here.

This one-of-a-kind show premiered in New York in March 2023, leaving the audience in awe with its unique blend of live orchestra, DJ prowess, and electrifying visuals. Imagine watching the action-packed animation on a massive HD screen while a 32-piece orchestra, led by conductor Vanessa Scamell, and DJ Total Eclipse from the legendary hip-hop collective, the X-Ecutioners, perform the iconic film score, fusing elements of orchestral with turntables and live DJ, and electronics for a rare and bold live experience.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced us to Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, who discovers the boundless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where anyone can be a hero. The films thrilling score, composed by the acclaimed Daniel Pemberton, blends heroism and resilience with an infusion of hip-hop vibes. The soundtrack includes incredible contributions from industry heavyweights like Post Malone, Lil Wayne, Jaden Smith, and Nicki Minaj, making it a true auditory feast.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of my favourite scores Ive ever written. Utilising a full orchestra, crazy electronics and unbelievable turntable scratching techniques amongst a million other things, it is so technically complex I never thought wed ever be able to actually reproduce it in a live concert, but somehow, we have, said Pemberton on the project.

The original Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman and written by Phil Lord and Rothman, wowed critics and audiences alike with its innovative visual style, captivating story, and standout voice acting. And now, with the highly anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, having hit theatres in June 2023, the Spider-Verse phenomenon continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

When Bias And Barngarla Clash With The Law Of The Land "IndyWatch Feed National"

Generally speaking, theres good reasons and bad reasons to oppose government projects, whatever they may be. And then sometimes, the reason itself lacks reason. Geoff Russell weighs in on the recent decision to block the construction of a nuclear waste dump in South Australia.

I recently emailed the Federal Court asking for a link to the registry of cases so I could find out the relevant details of the Kimba Nuclear Waste Repository legal case which got coverage in most kinds of media a few days ago.

Someone with one of those oxymoron job titles, a Client Services Officer, replied: Please provide a file number of your matter so the registry may further assist.

If I had the bloody file number, I wouldnt need to see the register.

Ive dealt with the legal system before in my life, and promised myself to strenuously avoid it in future. I come out in a rash within 100 metres of a courtroom. But bugger it, sometimes you really need to read the actual decision rather than rely on reports.

Happily, a second client services officer responded to my second request for information with a link to the judgement; a good place to start.

The non-reasons for the decision

The ABC report was ambitiously titled: Heres what we know about the Kimba nuclear storage facility decision. It reported that the area concerned had no native title but was a dryland wheat farm.

Its not clear if the Barngarla people understand why they won the case. The ABC reported:

The Barngarla people have a sacred site for women near Kimba, which they fear a facility would destroy.

The Seven Sisters Dreaming is through that area, Barngarla woman Dawn Taylor said.

The Guardian reported:

Its about listening to the First Nations people, the corporations chair, Jason Bilney, said after the ruling.

The lesson is about truth-telling. You can go on about the Voice, but its about listening to the First Nations people and here we are today and we prevailed and we won.

This case definitely wasnt about truth-telling. The truth is that radioactive minerals litter the Barngarla lands and this waste repository poses no risk whatsoever to any mythical beings or stories; both being impervious to radiation. And of course, all of the above gratuitous quotes were irrelevant to the actual legal case. You can read the full judgement here.

New video celebrates alpine peatland protection "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

North East Victoria is home to more than 2,000 hectares of Alpine Peatlands, an endangered ecological community listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999).

Alpine Peatlands, or Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and Associated Fens, are a priority ecological community for the North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA) supported through a five-year project to protect and enhance these unique environments.

This five-year, cross-regional project is coordinated by the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Project Coordinating Committee (VAPCC) and delivered in collaboration across three CMA regions (North East, East Gippsland and West Gippsland) with Parks Victoria. This project is funded by the Australian Governments National Landcare Program.

Now a new video has been released at https://youtu.be/QmyxVs7lXHA, developed by North East CMA to mark completion of the Cross Regional Victorian Alpine Peatlands Protection Project. Partners in the video are Parks Victoria, East Gippsland CMA, West Gippsland CMA and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation.

Alpine Peatlands are crucial for providing habitat and for modulating water-flow and maintaining hydrology of surrounding environments. The health of alpine peatlands influence the health of water further down the catchment and are therefore important for the whole community.

Alpine Peatlands occur across alpine, sub-alpine and montane landscapes of Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the ACT in permanently wet areas, such as along streams, drainage lines, valley edges and valley floors. The key to peatland or bog formation is a good supply of groundwater and an impeded drainage system that keeps the water table at or near the surface. Under these conditions, the decomposition of organic materials is incomplete, eventually forming the peat that typically underlies the ecological community.

Throughout the project, the North East CMA has been joined by Parks Victoria and Alpine Resorts Victoria in implementing key actions across the region from the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Spatial Action Plan (2015), guided by the 2015 National Recovery Plan and the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Project Coordinating Committee.

Project activities include:

(i) Weed control, targeting high threat weeds of willows, soft rush and other introduced exotic grass species

(ii) Deer control and a deer control trial investigating the impact of different deer management approaches on peatland condition.

Earlier this year, Parks Victoria facilitated the gathering in the Victorian Alps, extending invites to members of the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Project Coordinating Committee (VAPPCC), Traditional Owner groups, and others workin...

Laneway bristles with art "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The work of local photographers is on show at an outdoor art gallery in Dennys Place off Little Malop Street.

Geelong photographer Jane Fitzgeralds Laneway Photography Gallery exhibit features works from local artists, supported by a City of Greater Geelong COVID-19 Arts, Culture and Heritage Recovery Grant of $7000.

This exhibition showcases 12 local photographic artists, including a mix of emerging and established photographers.

The exhibition was organised and curated by Jane Fitzgerald and printed by Aeterna Lab Geelong and on UV and weather resistant, non-toxic PVC free, heavy metal free and phthalate free fabric. Local photographers Jonathan Dredge and Josh De Hoog have installed the prints.

I approached some of the local photographers on Instagram because I saw images of theirs that fitted with the look and theme I wanted for this exhibition, Ms Fitzgerald said.

I encouraged some of the photographers to exhibit work outside their usual genre and the shadows seem to be a natural theme across some of the images.

Im so enjoying watching people wander the laneway looking at art, as they go about everyday life, this makes me happy.

Music photographer Lucinda Goodwins edgy still life piece, amazing black and white street images from Michael Chambers and fine art printer Michael De Beens images from his Japan travels are among the artworks on display.

Creativity and Culture chair councillor Melissa Cadwell said the local arts scene is experiencing a revitalisation.

By bringing photography outdoors, Laneway Photography Gallery is for all newcomers to photographic art, local residents including people who might not otherwise get the chance to see this kind of art and tourists alike, she said.

I encourage visitors to find out more each of these skilled artists through the information QR codes below their work.

Exposures are revealing the systemic and corrupt behaviour of the big four "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Contributed by Joe Montero

First the PwC scandal and its fraudulent relationship to government. Now Deloitte is taking a hit as its similar toxic relationship with government is made public, thanks yet again, to whistlebower leaked documents.

The new scandal makes it clear that there is something wrong with the ways the consultancy giants operate and that this is systemic to the way they do business. The problem cant be written off as merely a case of a few bad apples. It demands an appropriate response from the government, and when this isnt coming, the rest of us gets to pay the price.

Consider the Deloitte case. Access to confidential defence documents was given, and they were used to help Deloitte line up lucrative government contracts.  Deloitte was previously involved in the creation of the Robodebt scheme that is now recognised to have been illegal. Get the picture?

A third of the big four, EY or Ernst and Young as it used to be known, was the advisor to the Victorian government on the Commonwealth Games and central to the cost blowout from around $2.5 billion to almost $7 billion.

Fourth on the list is KPMG. This one might not have been caught out yet. But consider this. Its Australian division was fined $US450,000 in a United States court in 2022 for violations by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) over several years, in connection with its internal training program. They were found to have shared confidential information with their clients. Some of the other countries where KPMG has been found to have acted improperly are South Africa, Bangladesh, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and the Philippi...

Federal Labor tightens procurement regs on consultancy firms, as PwC scandal deepens "IndyWatch Feed National"

With the revelations that large consultancy firm, PwC, had misused government information for commercial gain, The Echo asked local federal MP, Justine Elliot, whether she supports a royal commission into the consulting industry and to formally ban firms that breach legal and ethical standards?

According to www.theguardian.com, a former KPMG partner is asking for just that.

Misuse of government information

Another large consultancy, Deloitte, has also admitted misuse of government information.

Mrs Elliot told The Echo The Albanese government is horrified about the PwC revelations. Treasury has referred the matter to the AFP and it is currently under investigation.

As way of background, she says The Department of Finance has already taken a number of actions under the Commonwealth Procurement Framework to strengthen our systems following the disclosure of the PwC emails

Secretaries have been reminded that ethical behaviour must be taken into account as part of the value for money assessments which underpin decisions under the procurement framework.

PwC has been directed to stand down employees who were involved in, or had knowledge of, the tax matters from government contracts, until the Switkowski investigation is completed, and the department is satisfied that the direction can be lifted.

New clauses

New clauses will be included into the standard government procurement contracts to further strengthen the ability of the government to cancel these contracts in response to such behaviour in the future.

Is Cairnes a good place for business? "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Im not very seriously looking into moving yet but I have a window washing/pressure cleaning/car detailing business that I have here in the US. Florida specifically. It does very well and I like it here, but I want to experience other places in the world. Would I be able to support a family if I start a business like that in Cairns? Is there a niche market for that type of work in this particular region? TIA

In which the Caterist turns caring environmentalist and indigenous activist, the bro stays loyal to the far right, and a both siderist Major comes up with nada ... "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

So the poor old sodden English lost the Ashes because of climate change?

Oh wait, they've always been sodden and so this morning in Sydney, but lo, there among the 'leets of Holt street, a new vision arises from the ashes.

Behold, the Caterist turned caring environmentalist and concerned indigenous activist, giving a voice to the downtrodden. Not that Voice, but a voice of sorts, and the transformation is as wondrous and as transfixing as the late, barely remembered Lloyie of the Amazon... (last heard from on 19th April 2023).

Shade the eyes, because the transformation is likely to dazzle ...

To aid the Caterist in his deep environmental concern, the reptiles loaded up the piece with a set of huge photos. The pond is deeply bored by this gimmick from the reptiles' wreck of a graphics department and decided to get them out of the way in one go ...

Pressure washing prices "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Hi, Im searching for what everyone is paying for pressure washing homes in Cairns. I had my large driveway and surrounding concrete done for $100 p/h. It took him 6 hrs and he sprayed it with chlorine to keep further mould away longer.. beautiful no worries. Now Ive been looking for a package quote to do my roof and gutters and have been quoted $1975.00 for what he believes to be another 6 hrs work. So over $200 p/hr rate to pressure wash?? Youve got to be joking! You arent a specialist tradesman ffs

I just want someone who does roofs for the very reasonable rate of $100 p/hr.

Vale Peter McCawley "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Australia and the Asia-Pacific region more broadly has just lost one of its most gifted development economists. Dr Peter McCawley, AO, died peacefully in Canberra, Australia, on 18 July, having had cancer for some time.

A person is obviously much more than their CV, but Peters CV is worth noting. Even just reading the first six items in his CV all written in Peters characteristic short, sharp, clear style tells us he was a person committed to international development and policymaking at the most senior levels, right from the beginning. His CV starts:

1972-1974 Lecturer, Faculty of Economics, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta 1974-1975 Economic Adviser to (then) Mr Bill Hayden, MP, Minister for Social Security and later Treasurer of Australia 1976-1985 Research Fellow (1976-80) and Senior Research Fellow and Head, Indonesia Project (1981-85), Dept of Economics, Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University 1986-1991 Deputy Director General, AIDAB; (1) Policy Planning and Management Division (1986-89); (2) Community, Commercial and International Programs Division (1989-91) 1991 Economic Adviser to Mr John Kerin, MP, Treasurer of Australia 1992-1996 Executive Director, Asian Development Bank, Manila (representing Australia, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Is., and Tuvalu)

And that is just a truncated version. Peters CV also includes being Dean of the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo; a visiting fellow in the Arndt-Corden Economics Division at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific; a member of the Jackson Committee on the Review of the Australian Overseas Aid Program; economic adviser to the Indonesian Planning Agency, Bappenas; an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland; and a member of the board of The Asia Foundation. And so on.

He published seven books, including a history of the first 50 years of the Asian Development Bank which was translated into both Japanese and Chinese. Several of his economic books were written or co-authored in Bahasa Indonesia. He published over 30 articles in newspapers on development issues, and over 30 book reviews. He published 63 articles in journals and books, often in Bahasa Indonesia. The articles covered a wide range of topics, all with brisk, concise titles. To name just a few: The price of electricity in the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies; Aid and poverty: how Australias aid program helps the poor; and Forty years of Australian-Indonesian relations: what have we learned?

But Peter was much more than a bureaucrat or academic author. He was a bridge-builder between Australia and the countries in our region. To illustrate, he once drew up a table on how rich countries and developing countries can view the same development challenge from almost totally...
