Just feel it.

Described as her most sonically diverse offering yet, Lumsdens approach to incorporating different musical elements while staying true to her acoustic songwriting style is rooted in her gut feelings and intuition. I am excited to explore, she says, and I dont feel like instrumentation should be limited due to what genre you have been put in. Too many Australians still dont know who Daniel Duggan is, even if his case has significant repercussions and says a lot about how legal process is Australia is being transformed into something that we should all be worried about. Everyone should know more about what is happening to this man.

Daniel is a former American and now Australian citizen and a family. He was once a US marine, and since coming to Australia, built a pilot training business. This led him to a contract to for commercial pilot training in South Africa, with a company that goes by the name of the Test Flying Academy of South Africa (TFASA).

It happened that he had some of the students were Chinese citizens. Theis led authorities in Washington to accuse TFASA and Duggen of working with the Chinese to undermine United States policy. It led to action to capture Duggan, and it appears, with the assistance of the Australia Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), which is immersed in the United States led confrontation with China.

Through this agency Daniel Duggen was called and offered a job in Australia. He went for it, was arrested by federal police and imprisoned, wasnt offered bail and has been kept in solitary confinement. Daniel has now been locked up in this way for more than 9 months, without an ending in sight.  He next faces court on 24 November.

The cover was the issuing of an Interpol red notice that provides for extradition on certain grounds. It excludes extradition in cases that are political. Australia also has an extradition treaty with the United States, and this too spells out that it does not allow extradition for any alleged political offence.

All of this is being violated.

In a quirky twist of legal developments, the humble thumbs-up emoji has been officially recognised as a valid representation of contract agreement by a Canadian Judge.

This fascinating ruling has implications for how Australians respond to official documents, according to Andrew Rich, Head of National Industrial and Employment Law at Slater and Gordon.

The case in question involved a farmer who was ordered to pay $61,442 AUD for not fulfilling a contract, with the defence arguing that the thumbs-up emoji merely indicated he would review the contract later. However, Justice Keene emphasised that courts must adapt to the new reality of communication methods in the digital age.

This court readily acknowledges that a emoji is a non-traditional means to sign a document, but nevertheless, under these circumstances, this was a valid way to convey the two purposes of a signature,' wrote Justice Keene.

While the ruling was made overseas, it may hold persuasive value in Australian courts. Rich explained that while not a binding precedent, the law is evolving to reflect modern realities, and other courts may consider this decision in similar scenarios.

An Australian court can consider this legal decision when making a ruling, it can be thought of as a suggestion or advice from another court, Rich explains.

While it isnt a binding precedent, the law is increasingly modernising to accurately reflect the realities of our day-to-day lives; there are many common scenarios that would be similar circumstances to this.

For instance, imagine your boss sends you a new contract, and you respond with a thumbs-up emoji, intending to confirm receipt. But later, upon reading the terms, you disagree. Should the matter go to court, a Judge could refer to this decision.

The Canadian case raised concerns about accepting other emojis like the fist bump or handshake as indications of agreement, but Justice Keene dismissed these fears. According to Rich, this suggests other courts may not accept those emojis as commonly understood representations of agreement.

This ruling means that by just sending a simple thumbs up, people may be locking themselves into a contract without necessarily intending to.

I dont think people need to be afraid, but they just need to be aware of the new realities and the challenges that the use of emojis and other new forms of communication create and just be careful.

Coming fresh off their 20-date European tour after dropping their celebrated album Anywhere But Here via Domino, Sorry has emerged from Brixtons Windmill scene, sharing stages with Shame, Goat Girl, and Black Midi. Their music blends lo-fi sounds of grunge, trap, and shoegaze, creating a unique and captivating musical world thats impossible to resist. NME raved about their latest album, saying it frequently takes sudden turns that you dont see coming, adding to the excitement of their upcoming tour.

The band, composed of Asha Lorenz (vox/guitar), Louis OBryen (vox/guitar), Lincoln Barrett (drums), Campbell Baum (bass), and Marco Pini (electronics), started as a duo with high school friends Asha and Louis, each releasing solo projects on Soundcloud before joining forces.

Since signing with Domino in 2020, alongside musical giants like Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand, Sorry released their debut studio album 925, produced by Lana Del Rey and Gorillaz producer, Jamie Dring. A team of researchers just got a $600,000 grant from Australias Office of National Intelligence to study ways of merging human brain cells with artificial intelligence.

In collaboration with Melbourne-based startup Cortical Labs, the team has already successfully demonstrated how a cluster of roughly 800,000 brain cells in a Petri dish is capable of playing a game of Pong.

The basic idea is to merge biology with AI, something that could forge new frontiers for machine learning tech for self-driving cars, autonomous drones, or delivery robots or at least thats what the government is hoping to accomplish with its investment.

Its been a few years between albums for Lismore rockers Grinspoon, so its only fitting that almost three decades into their career recent happenings have been focused around album retrospectives.

While 2019 saw the release of their Chemical Hearts compilation album, the group first broke a few years of silence in 2017 when they looked back on their debut album, Guide To Better Living, for its 20th anniversary.

The highly anticipated Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre precinct development is a step closer to reality,  with the selection of the preferred bidder to deliver the much-anticipated project, along with the unveiling of proposed (and truly incredible) designs.

Flagged to open in 2026, Plenary Conventions has been appointed to develop the project and will soon start on the transformation of a 1.6-hectare waterfront site to deliver a world-class facility and precinct to Geelong.

The precinct will include a purpose-built convention and exhibition space featuring a 1000-seat venue, two large exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, conference facilities and flexible event spaces.

Utilising a full orchestra, crazy electronics and unbelievable turntable scratching techniques amongst a million other things, it is so technically complex I never thought wed ever be able to actually reproduce it in a live concert, but somehow, we have, said Pemberton on the project.

The original Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman and written by Phil Lord and Rothman, wowed critics and audiences alike with its innovative visual style, captivating story, and standout voice acting. And now, with the highly anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, having hit theatres in June 2023, the Spider-Verse phenomenon continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

First the PwC scandal and its fraudulent relationship to government. Now Deloitte is taking a hit as its similar toxic relationship with government is made public, thanks yet again, to whistlebower leaked documents.

The new scandal makes it clear that there is something wrong with the ways the consultancy giants operate and that this is systemic to the way they do business. The problem cant be written off as merely a case of a few bad apples. It demands an appropriate response from the government, and when this isnt coming, the rest of us gets to pay the price.

Consider the Deloitte case. Access to confidential defence documents was given, and they were used to help Deloitte line up lucrative government contracts.  Deloitte was previously involved in the creation of the Robodebt scheme that is now recognised to have been illegal. Get the picture?

A third of the big four, EY or Ernst and Young as it used to be known, was the advisor to the Victorian government on the Commonwealth Games and central to the cost blowout from around $2.5 billion to almost $7 billion.

Fourth on the list is KPMG. This one might not have been caught out yet. But consider this. Its Australian division was fined $US450,000 in a United States court in 2022 for violations by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) over several years, in connection with its internal training program. They were found to have shared confidential information with their clients. Two casino centred businesses will have to come up with a collective total of $450 million  in penalty payments over two years after AUSTRAC launched civil penalty proceedings against them for breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act).

The Court also ordered Crown to pay AUSTRACs costs.

Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth (Crown) have been ordered to pay up by the Federal Court of Australia.

The order comes after Crown and AUSTRAC (the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) filed joint submissions with the Federal Court of Australia in May 2023 for the payment of $450 million in instalments over two years.

Detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse

AUSTRAC is the Australian Government agency responsible for detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse of the financial system to protect the community from serious and organised crime.

Through regulation, and enhanced intelligence capabilities, AUSTRAC collects and analyses financial reports and information to generate financial intelligence.

As part of the settlement, Crown admitted that it operated in contravention of the AML/CTF Act, including that Crown Melbourne and Crown Perths AML/CTF programs were not based on appropriate risk assessments, did not have appropriate systems and controls to manage their risks, and were not subject to appropriate oversight by their Boards and senior management.

The serious nature of the breaches

The serious nature of the breaches meant that Crown allowed high-risk activities to take place in its casinos, without intervention, on an ongoing basis. For example:

• Crown continued a business relationship with a major casino junket operator until 2021, although being aware of allegations the operator was connected to organised crime.
• Crown failed to appropriately monitor billions of dollars in transactions (including international payment flows) which impacted its ability to identify and disrupt possible suspicious activity, and to report suspicious matters to AUSTRAC and law enforcement.
• From March 2016 to December 2018, there were at least 75 suspicious incidents involving a total of around $23 million in cash, in a private gaming room which Crown Melbourne gave one casino junket operator exclusive access to.

Substantial and ongoing efforts

However, in settling these proceedings, AUSTRAC took into account the substantial and ongoing efforts undertaken by Crown to address the AML/CTF failings which were the subject of these proceedings.
