The Hope Co-op providing support for asylum seeker youth in Australia "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

An initiative run by and for people from asylum-seeking backgrounds is providing young asylum seekers living in Australia with essential access to education and employment opportunities.

There are more than 25 million asylum seekers world-wide and around 30,000 people who fled their homes for safety and arrived by boat in Australia during 20122013. Most of these have remained in limbo despite ten years of living in Australia. These individuals have become known as the legacy caseload, and face significant barriers from policies aimed at deterring further asylum seekers. As a result, their access to social, economic and educational participation is severely restricted.

In response to these challenges, an initiative has been established by a group of asylum-seeking students in Australia, in collaboration with several citizens.

Speaking with The Wires Aryana Mohmood about this initiative was Secretary and Project Manager with the Hope Co-operative and PHD Candidate from Monash Faculty of Education, Sally Morgan.

Using the arts to support communities in transition away from coal "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

On the journey to net zero, communities around the world are coming to terms with their inevitable transition away from coal.

This was the case in Coshocton, Ohio, where a coal-burning power plant was once the backbone of the local community. The plant was demolished in 2020, but in May of this year, the community gathered to pay their respects a funeral in the form of a play. The project was started by Ohio State Universitys School of Environment and Natural Resources, combining social science and fine arts to better understand the significant community impacts of moving away from coal.

The Wires Mary-Kate Hannagan spoke to Dr Jeffrey Jacquet, Associate Professor of Rural, Environmental and Natural Resource Sociology at Ohio State University to learn more about the project.

Deep hope resides where we see life thrive "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

Australia has had a complicated history with Indian Ocean territories, with such territories becoming areas for quarantine and detainment of asylum seekers.

Some detainees, as we learn through harrowing accounts in Rene Pettitt-Schipps new book The Archipelago of Us, are held in centers for years, where they are mistreated, underfed and distressed.

RTRFMs Danae Gibson chats with award-winning author Rene Pettitt Schipp about the release, her experiences on Christmas Island and the injustice of mandatory detention.

Pettitt-Schipp remains optimistic for a fairer future.

Worlds leading mining experts gather at this years World Mining Congress "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

Mining experts say the world needs vast quantities of lithium, cobalt, copper, sand and other minerals for a sustainable net-zero world. At the same time, mining companies need to decarbonise their operations. But how can we ensure the demands for these minerals do not translate to environmental damage and negative impact on local communities?

These are some of the many questions and topics of conversation at the World Mining Congress, held for the first time in Australia from today, Monday 26 June until this Thursday 29 June.

Over 3,000 mining leaders, technologists, and researchers from 70 countries are meeting at the Congress, in a bid to share knowledge and provide insight on topics including mine closure and land repurposing in different contexts.

Speaking with The Wires Aryana Mohmood about this Congress is Dr Mike Hood, Emeritus Professor at the University of Queensland and member of the Australian National Organising Committee that led the development of the program of speakers from around the world.

Upbeat, energetic and brimming with pop nostalgia, new album Big Star is quintessentially Katy Steele "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Considering the name that Katy Steele made for herself as the lead presence of Little Birdy, her debut solo album Human should have received more attention than it did.

Released in 2016, Human marked itself as a transformative album for Steele, offering soulful disco grooves and synth-heavy ambience as a stark replacement for the melancholic post-grunge stylings of her work in Little Birdy.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

But while it was an album that saw Steele experimenting with her sound in exciting new ways, it was a release that fell flat with its shelf-life largely struggling to maintain prominence past a short run on triple js Whats New rotation.

The same wont be said about her second studio album Big Star.

Sure, it continues to propel the anthemic pop stylings that some Little Birdy fans struggled to connect with on Human, but this time around it feels much more memorable, with Big Star delivering a powerful blend of Steeles iconic vocals alongside the greatest elements of pop music, both modern and nostalgic.

Come And See Me ties in 80s synth-pop ambience with shimmery Fleetwood Mac-inspired earworm melodies, Falling Apart melds lo-fi techno sensibilities alongside sparkly alt-pop rhythms while title track Big Star sees Steele experiment with elements of gospel in her vocal cadence.

While its evident that Big Star was written from a much happier perspective than Steeles work in Little Birdy, it does feel like it has less to say. But with grand arrangements, synth-heavy tonal qualities and shimmering pop-rooted guitars...

From Disused Tennis Court to a Productive Vegie Garden "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

We explore a productive vegie garden that once played host to family tennis tournaments. For Jaclyn Crupi and her partner Andrew Stewardson, transforming a disused tennis court into a productive vegie garden was about finding a design that balanced history, happiness and health.  In 2019, Jaclyn and Andrew acquired half an acre on the Mornington Peninsula, less than 100 kilometres southeast of Melbourne. On it stands a mid-century home that remains practically unchanged from what would have been regarded a quite forward-thinking build in its day, right down to the pantrys cold cupboard next to the small original kitchen at

I cannot believe I am saying these wordsMy debut album is finally coming out. This record has been the therapy session I never realised I needed. Ive hurt, Ive broken, Ive grown, and Ive healed. The journey of making this album was something I could hold onto, something to keep me safe, to get through the turmoil, to speak my truth. Ive held on to it for quite some time and now its time to let it go.

The news arrives hot off the heels of her moving performances this morning on triple js Like A Version. With her band in tow, Eliott pulled out all stops for two very soul-stirring performances; a cover of Jojis Glimpse Of Us and her current single, Control.

On the 12-track debut LP, Eliotts prodigious talent is on full display. At times explosive, at times searingly introspective, just calling to tell you Im ok is a compelling journey of fracturing relationships, self-discovery, and gentle, hopeful rebirth. For the listener, it will take them on a full journey, looking ahead instead of reflecting on the past.

While some of the tracks were penned in her hometown of Cobram in regional Victoria, most were written after a formative period in 2020, including spending two months in Paris alongside writer and producer Jack Grace. In the City of Lights, with no pressure to write an album or produce a hit on her back, the songs for just calling to tell you Im okay appeared.

The albums production is helmed by Gab Strum (Japanese Wallpaper) additional work is done by Jack Grace, Hauskey, Simon Lam, and Dylan Nash with Eliott working with a range of co-writers across the 12 tracks, including Hauskey, Nick Acquroff (NYCK), Vancouver Sleep Clinic, Xavier Dunn, Nash, Angie McMahon, Alexander Biggs, and Mlanie Pereira.

Metabolic Overshoot "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Anyone lurking on this humble blog will have noticed that Ive become rather passionate about the state of the food industry and its impact on the global health system. All of the doctors and scientists Ive featured here in the past six months all say get off the seed oils and switch to olive or coconut oil. Which I did twenty years ago already. This got me thinking, is it even possible?

Global oilseed production is projected to reach 632 million tons on record plantings. Soybean production is forecast to rise 23 million tons to 386 million, a 6-percent increase. Production of all oilseeds is forecast to increase, with all but cottonseed and rapeseed reaching at least 10-year records.12 May 2021

On average, during the period 2016 to 2021, world production of olive oil was 3.1 million metric tons (3.4 million short tons). Spain produced 44% of world production. The next largest producers were Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Turkey and Morocco. I now refuse to buy anything but Australian olive oil after being warned by a Sicilian wwoofer who worked here that most European olive oil is cut with seed oil.

Simple maths therefore shows that theres 210 times more unhealthy oil produced globally than healthy olive oil..

Coconut oil is just as bad at 3.6 million tonnes. Worse, a quick google discovered this :

As I suspected, the whole metabolic syndrome epidemic is not a problem, its just another predicament. In fact its so much like lets switch from fossil fuels to renewables, its not funny. This ones outcome, however, is that it will kill millions, if not, eventually billions of people.. And when youre in serious overshoot, population collapse is the only outcome.

Arriving in Australian cinemas on 29 June, Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, The White Lotus) plays an American veteran turned yoga teacher who would become the first whistleblower of the Trump era, in this tense Berlinale-premiering docudrama Reality.

When a 25-year-old named Reality Winner (Sweeney) pulls into the driveway of her Augusta, Georgia, rental on a Saturday afternoon in June 2017, she is met by two FBI agents in possession of a search warrant.

The Voice referendum could be a major step towards constitutional and electoral renewal "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

New South Wales co-ordinator for the Yes campaign, Charline Emzin-Boyd. Photo Tree Faerie.

The referendum proposal became law on 19 June when it was passed in the Senate: 52 for, 19 against.

In the 1967 referendum, Section 51 of the 1901 Australian Constitution was altered so that Indigenous people were, for the first time, recognised as people of any race for whom is deemed necessary to make special laws by deleting other than the aboriginal race in any State.

Section 127 was removed altogether. It stated that Aborigines not to be counted in reckoning population. Over 90 per cent supported the amendment. There wasnt a No option.

Although then regarded as fully fledged citizens Indigenous representation in our parliaments did not follow.

Simon Crean, Former Labor Leader, Dies Overseas On Trade Mission "IndyWatch Feed Tas"

Simon Crean, a former leader of the federal Labor Party and a minister in the Hawke, Keating, Rudd and Gillard governments, has died suddenly over the weekend, during a trip to Europe promoting trade. He was 74 years of age.

Crean led the Labor Party from November 2001 to December 2003, replacing Kim Beazley after the disastrous Tampa election, before resigning the leadership which was subsequently won narrowly by Mark Latham, a man Crean would feud with for years.

As Opposition leader in 2003, Crean opposed Australias involvement in the Iraq War. And despite being wedged by the Howard government on the issue of refugees, he also advocated for a gentler approach to refugees.

It was also Crean who, in 2002, convinced the ALP to increase the quota of women preselected to winnable seats from 35 per cent to 40 per cent. The move was bitterly contested at the annual conference, and Crean would pay more broadly for attempts at party reform, with his seat of Hotham targetted in the lead-up to the 2007 election. But today, across the country, Labor has 218 men in federal, state and territory governments, compared to 217 women (Labor women actually outstrip the number of men in federal parliament (55 to 49), and theyre also over-represented in four other parliaments Victoria (38-33); Western Australia (38-36); Tasmania (seven to six); and the ACT (six to four). By contrast, the Liberal-Nationals have 195 men and 89 women, a rate of less than one-third).

Crean was the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) from 1985 to 1990, before being elected to Federal Parliament, just like his father Frank Crean, who served as Gough Whitlams treasurer from 1972 to 1974.

President of the ACTU, Michele ONeil said the labour movement had lost a giant in the passing of Simon Crean.

He was a great believer in and fighter for fairness and justice for working people in Australia and around the world, ONeil said.

He was a leader of conviction and courage and was generous and supportive to young unionists and all those who sought his support and advice.

His legacy has made a lasting impact on the wages, entitlements, safety and retirement dignity of working people.

His loss will be keenly and deeply felt across our movement and we send out sincere condolences to his wife Carole and his whole family.

The end of an era: After 47 years, Opsys Leopold fish and chip institution hands over ownership "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

In the heart of the Leopold community, a cherished institution bids farewell. After years of serving up crispy golden fish, perfectly cooked chips and mouthwatering burgers, Opsys Leopold Drive thru Fish N Chips is handing over the keys.

A warm and welcoming haven, where families gathered, friends caught up, and generations shared stories over shared platters of delectable seafood and where friendly staff always greeted you with a smile for the past 47 years, the owners of the small family business, Peter and Helen Opsimoulis, announced the sale of Opsys Leopold on social media this week.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

It is with bittersweet feelings to inform you on the sale of our small family-owned business Opsys Leopold, the post read.

Back in 1976 our family business began with an empty shop and a drive to give. Five fish and chip shops later, our family grew and we started our 6th but 1st drive-through shop Opsys Leopold where after 11 years, three generations have thrived working all together.

Serving the Bellarine Peninsula for the last 47 years of nothing less than hard work and endless amounts of time, we have decided to give ourselves a small break before we move on to the next phase of our lives.

Antony Loewenstein has brought a book to a gunfight "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

My new book, The Palestine Laboratory, was positively reviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age on the weekend in a piece written by Michael Ruffles:

Antony Loewenstein has brought a book to a gunfight, taking on Israels enormous and expanding military-industrial complex and invasive cyber spy operations with the low-tech tool of words on paper.

In the right hands, theres nothing more powerful or incendiary than words and Loewenstein mounts a full-scale attack. He accuses Israel of not only running an apartheid state but profiting from the tools used to oppress millions, and selling them to some of the worlds more murderous despots and least scrupulous governments.

Why a Germ Expert Is Begging You To Remove the Foil or Plastic Seal Under the Lid of Your Containers After Opening "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

If you frequent Reddit or engage in household debates on food storage, youve likely encountered the controversy surrounding foil or plastic seals on food products like yogurt and sour cream. Should these seals be removed or retained for additional coverage after opening? One couple debated this question for an impressive ten years before a directive from the very product in question solved their quandary. The husband found the unexpected resolution under the contentious disposable seal, which was imprinted with a manufacturers instruction: To prolong freshness, completely remove and discard this foil seal.

This straightforward message from the product manufacturer may solve the debate, but it still leaves us wondering about the original purpose of the seals. Moreover, how can leaving these seals on an opened container compromise the freshness of its contents? In pursuit of these answers, we consulted two renowned germ experts.

Understanding the Purpose of Foil or Plastic Seals on Food Containers

According to Jason Tetro, a respected microbiologist and author of the book The Germ Files, there are two primary reasons for the existence of these seals. Firstly, it helps to increase shelf lifethe container is usually flushed with nitrogen before sealing, which reduces the amount of oxygen inside, he explains. Nitrogen flushing is a common technique used by food manufacturers to prolong the shelf-life of their products. The reduction of oxygen inside the container is intended to suppress the growth of aerobic bacteria and fungi, which can cause food to spoil.

Secondly, these seals serve as a protective barrier for the containers contents. It helps to prevent the introduction of chemicals and microbes that could spoil the products and/or cause illnesses, states Tetro.

Adding further clarity to this matter, microbial ecologist Jack A. Gilbert, Ph.D., a professor at the University of California San Diego, elaborates on the importance of the seal. He describes it as a safety and quality mechanism. It works by creating a barrier between the product and the external environment while also providing assurance to consumers that the product has not been tampered with prior to purchase.

Deforestation: Onuesoke  Calls For Establishment Of  Forestry And Conservation Commission In Delta "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

ONUESOKE 13

LAGOS JUNE 25TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain and former  gubernatorial aspirant, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has appealed to Delta State Government to set up Forestry and Conservation Commission to tackle deforestation, forest degradation and develop the forest assets.

Onuesoke who decried the effects the  loss and degradation of forest  is having on the people pointed out that the Commission if inaugurated  will reverse the trend, harness the forest wildlife resources to promote conservation of the ecosystem and take charge of the ungoverned spaces in the forest.

The PDP Chieftain who made the call when some loyalists paid him a visit in his office at Oto-Udu in Udu local government area of Delta State  expressed worries over the devastating impacts of poachers, illegal logging activities and arsonists, especially herdsmen, who allegedly set fire in the forest to allow for fresh pasturing grasses.

According to him, Deforestation and forest degradation is happening at an alarming rate, resulting in many wildlife habitats being destroyed, farmlands opened to flooding, loss of biodiversity, greenhouse gases accumulation and loss of forest ecosystem, among others. Delta State  is a low-lying coastal state that is vulnerable to climate change. The trees in the forest are very important for the sequestration of carbon, so we need to conserve the forest.

Through afforestation, there would be more plants or trees to help absorb carbon dioxide and reduce its content in the air or in the atmosphere. As carbon dioxide is being reduced through the help of trees, then the problems of climate change and global warming will be answered, even in the smallest way. More than the trees, the soil that is being developed as a forest also absorbs the CO2 from the atmosphere three times more than the trees.

The soil used for the afforestation also gets to be healthy again, and helps in the natural water filtration system. Moreover, afforestation also helps the environment by providing shade for people, habitat for wildlife, and providing food for both human and herbivores.

He argued that  it is sad  that a state like Delta that is blessed with natural forest  to allow the extinction of peculiar animals and giants African trees enriched with interlocking canopies from the forests, which are pot...

POEM: War games "IndyWatch Feed Tas"

POEM: War games

This short story is an *IA Writing Competition (fiction category) entry.

WAR GAMES

will sanctions do the trick

or are the rumours true, dyou think?

is Putin possibly now too sick

with a mind that clearly seems displaced

and a moral compass quite disgraced

there he sits in isolation

and claims to run the Russian nation

from an empty palace room

with meetings that are held on Zoom

he plays roulette with youthful lives

(who cares if they have kids or wives)

Vlad's crazy endgame is to win

never mind that it's a sin

that lives are lost

that there will be a heavy cost

that day by day the stakes are raised

yet hes impassive, quite unfazed

but beyond his bunker and Russias border

theres outrage at such senseless slaughter

as well as widespread admiration

for the Ukrainian peoples determination

to stay the course, and fight for freedom

to keep their optimism and remain unbowed

even though their future probably lies

beneath a blue and yellow shroud

The iconic Barwon Edge Boathouse is being transformed by the experienced team at ALMA and Felix "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Wherever Jesse Hughes, Sarah Horsburgh, and Matt and Amelia Baird go, good times seem to follow. ALMA, a contemporary South American shared-style restaurant, came first in 2017, gifting Geelong a decadent dining experience.

In 2021, the team opened Felix a remarkable and elegant new restaurant building on their winning formula of a distinguished menu, edgy styling and exceptional service.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

In short, the team understands hospitality and the importance of quality experiences very, very well. Together theyre hoping to bring plenty of both to Geelongs iconic Barwon Edge Boathouse, a gorgeous hidden treasure on the river banks of the Barwon River that they and pretty much every other local have an affinity with.

Loved by many, the community was rocked back in May when the owners of the Barwon Edge Boathouse announced they were closing its doors, 17 and a half years after opening.

Little did we know, the Felix and ALMA team had other (huge and exciting) plans, now officially announcing they have taken the reins of the much loved and iconic site at Barwon Edge.

After admiring the beauty of the site at Barwon Edge for many years, we feel incredibly privileged to have a chance to operate there and call it our new home, the team shared.

Rights Groups Denounce Spain and Moroccos Lack of Justice as Melilla Tragedy Anniversary Nears

By JENNIFER O'MAHONY

MADRID (AP) Rights groups on Friday denounced a lack of justice and transparency over the deaths of at least 37 migrants last year during a mass attempt to cross the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave city of Melilla.

Ahead of the tragedys first anniversary on Saturday, Amnesty International said the Spanish and Moroccan authorities were preventing attempts to find the truth of what happened when up to 2,000 African migrants tried to climb a border wall and dozens were crushed, beaten and denied medical attention by security forces at the Barrio Chino border crossing.

The independent Spanish Commission for Refugees, also known by its Spanish acronym CEAR, ordered authorities to clarify what happened that day for truth, justice and reparations, and demanded the launch of an independent investigation after prosecutors shelved the only state probe into the deaths in December.

This leaves the door wide open for such a tragedy to happen again, endangering the lives of thousands of people seeking refuge, said Estrella Galn, CEARs general director.

Amnesty noted that the families of 76 people who remain missing after the tragedy were still waiting for answers, and that Spain and Morocco both had failed to provide a full list of victims names, or any footage of the tragedy.

Bodies are still lying in a morgue and in graves and efforts to identify the dead and inform their relatives have been blocked, said Amnesty International Secretary General Agns Callamard.

Spains interior ministry has repeatedly denied that any deaths occurred on...

Former Labor cabinet minister condemns $368b AUKUS deal "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

By Mibenge Nsenduluka June 23 2023  https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8245773/former-labor-cabinet-minister-condemns-368b-aukus-deal/

Midnight Oil frontman and former Labor cabinet minister Peter Garrett has again condemned Australias security deal with the United States and United Kingdom, calling the $368 billion agreement costly and risky.

Mr Garrett said the decision to purchase a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines was a huge gamble and should not be allowed to proceed, while speaking at a public forum in Melbourne.

Its the biggest, its the most costly and its the riskiest decision ever taken by any Australian government short of governments committing us to war and should not be allowed, he said on Friday.

He applauded recent backlash from some Labor party members and unions, saying a slew of academic and foreign policy experts also backed the push against AUKUS.

So we are not alone, a basic and a major objection to AUKUS lies in the aspects of the arrangement which see us reversing our foreign policy and defence posture thats been generally in place since World War II, Mr Garrett said.

Were going from a focus of direct defence as it is currently constituted to a concentration on forward defence.

Mr Garrett in March said AUKUS would produce increasing volumes of high-level radioactive waste that would be stored for tens of thousands of years in the Australian environment.

It follows stinging remarks by former Labor prime minister Paul Keating earlier this year.

Mr Keating said the new security deal was the worst international decision since conscription during WWI.

Under the deal, which is part of the AUKUS security arrangement, Australia will command a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines within the next three decades.

A number of Labor branches have been agitating for the government to dump its support for nuclear-powered submarines and AUKUS.

But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government remains committed.

The view of my government is very, very clear and is unwavering in its support for AUKUS, in its support for issues about our national security and about our interests in the defence of this nation, he told reporters on Thursday.

11th July: The date set by Victoria Nuland for WWIII "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Ansh Pandey TFIGlobal.com May 31, 2023

The war in Ukraine has been a constant source of tension, with moments of fleeting calm shattered by alarming escalations. And lurking in the shadows is the notorious deep state, an enigmatic web of power that allegedly shapes American foreign policy from behind closed doors.

Nuland has just dropped a revelation of seismic proportions. In a video conference with Kyiv, she boldly declared that World War III could ignite on July 11th. Thats right, folks, the countdown to catastrophe has officially begun

WW3 on July 11th

Reportedly, at a deleted video conference with Kyiv officials, Nuland stated that WWIII will effectively begin on July 11th stating that the US and its partners will fight as long as it takes 16 years or more The scheduled date was chosen to coincide with the NATO Summit, a one-day meeting in Lithuania.

The boldness of Nulands assertion makes one shudder. She considers the United States and its allies locked in a 16-year clash that never ends. And if thats not enough to make you anxious, take into account the fact that this timeline of Nuland falls on the same day as the NATO Summit. It appears as if she wanted to give the proceedings a little theatrical flair.

As the Summit approaches, one cant help but wonder what will be on the agenda. Is it going to be the protection of Europe from the inevitable backlash of this impending war or how many fighter jets will make it to Ukraine unscathed, defying the odds and avoiding mid-air disasters?

Who is Nuland?

At the center of this geopolitical storm. A question may arise, who is Victoria Nuland? A very straight-faced answer could be, a figure who is apparently more powerful than Biden. A lady as divisive as they come and known for her unwavering support for democratic reforms and closer ties between Ukraine and the West, Nuland has fearlessly challenged the actions of Putin...
