Labour says "fuck transparency" "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Last month, the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee reported back on the Inspector-General of Defence Bill making numerous changes which significantly improved the transparency and credibility of the Inspector-General. When I posted about this, I said that NZDF was likely to be unhappy with this, and that

the danger now is that the Minister will listen to them and abuse Labour's majority to undo the committee's recommendations and restore the coverup regime.
Unfortunately, this seems to be exactly what has happened. Defence Minister Andrew Little has introduced a supplementary order paper which unpicks key amendments made by the committee. The SOP will:
  • Allow the Minister to censor the Inspector-General's reports;
  • Reverse the presumption of transparency and make investigations private by default;
  • Remove the IGD's investigations from the coverage of the OIA.

The result will be an "inspector" which is effectively a stooge of the Minister, which exists to cover up rather than bring to light NZDF wrongdoing. And the Inspector-General will lack credibility as a result.

If this passes, I'd hope that a pro-transparency party will put an "Inspector-General of Defence (Transparency and Credibility) Amendment Bill" in the ballot. Meanwhile, the sooner we get back to "normal" MMP politics and coalition government, so governments have to actually listen to Parliament rather than over-ruling it by the whip, the better.

NZDF will not be happy with this "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Back in October, the government introduced its new bill for an Inspector-General of Defence to the House. The bill was written by and for NZDF, and it showed - it was basicly designed to enable coverups, with secrecy clauses, OIA exemptions, a new withholding ground of "making NZDF feel bad", gag orders, NZDF control of investigations, and a limitation on scope which would have prevented the new Inspector-General from investigating practically any of the many, many, many awful things and failures NZDF has done over the years. As a result, it was roundly condemned by civil society groups, who made submissions demanding transparency, independence, and a body which could actually hold NZDF accountable.

...and for once, the select committee scrutinising the bill actually listened. They reported back on it today, and the report is a resounding defeat for NZDF. The most significant changes:

  • The entire idea of "scope" - designed by NZDF to keep the IGD from investigating anything - has been discarded. The Inspector-General will now be able to investigate anything NZDF does;
  • The requirement to avoid "duplication of scrutiny", intended to prevent investigations, has been replaced by a cooperation clause, letting the IGD work with other agencies and run parallel investigations;
  • Investigations must now be conducted in public unless there is good reason not to;
  • The IGD will be fully subject to the OIA, with no exemption for investigations. The select committee was quite explicit in finding that existing OIA withholding grounds were sufficient to protect the interests involved. The definition of "sensitive information" has also been aligned with the OIA, meaning that information can no longer be withheld simply because it makes NZDF feel bad.

This is basicly everything I asked for in my submission. The only thing I didn't get was a fix to the protected disclosures regime (though that is arguably handled by the removal of the concept of "cope" and enabling cooperation with other agencies - meaning that protected disclosures about NZDF will actually be able to be investigated).

Unfortunately the departmental advice and responses to queries are not yet online, so we can't see how NZDF responded to submissions. But I doubt they're happy. And the danger now is that the Minister will listen to them and abuse Labour's majority to undo the committee's recommendations and restore the coverup regime.

Bank of England breathes a sigh of relief "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

UK disinflation FINALLY underway

I watched the cable (GBP/USD) markets with bated breath this morning.

After so many bad inflation prints in a row, I could barely bring myself to look at the UK consumer price figures figures...the coming UK recession was seemingly threatening to leave a smouldering crater where consumers used to be.

Maybe that will still happen, but at least the news was considerably more positive today.

As it turned out, for the first time in seemingly an age, the inflation news surprised to the downside.

UK inflation was expected by financial markets to fall from 8.7 per cent to 8.2 per cent in June, but in the event the release wasn't as bad as feared, and annual inflation fell to 7.9 per cent.

The core figures were also lower than expected.

The reason I though this merited a blog post in its own right is that...

Concerns over slow progress of Global Pandemic Agreement amid splintering of discussions "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

July 19, 2023: Global Pandemic Agreement discussions aimed at ensuring equitable access to medicines in the case of a future global health emergency have resumed this week at the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The agreement aims to avoid a repeat of the "catastrophic moral failure" of the Covid pandemic, when delaying tactics by a few high-income countries meant it took 20 months for members of the WTO to agree to a change to patent rules for COVID vaccines to allow for more equitable vaccine distribution. A watered-down agreement was only reached in June 2022, by which time research shows that over a million lives may have been lost through lack of access to vaccines.

An early draft of the Global Pandemic Agreement included a commitment to reserve up to 20% of any tests, vaccines or treatments for low-income countries in a future global health emergency but negotiations so far have been slow and fraught. Tensions between low-income countries, arguing for more equitable medicine access, and high-income countries seeking to protect the interests of their pharmaceutical companies have continued.

Efforts by the negotiators to create a more concise initial draft has been met with backlash over the perceived influence of high income countries in the weakening of initial commitments to health equity.

AFTINET, civil society groups and public health experts have called for the Global Pandemic Agreement to include:

  • Temporary waivers of WTO rules on patent and other intellectual property rights to enable global medicines production at affordable prices for low-income countries;
  • The incentivisation of transfer of manufacturing technology for pandemic-related products in low and middle-income countries;
  • Public funding for research and development of pandemic-related products to be made conditional on open licensing and sharing of intellectual property, technology and know-how, and include terms and conditions in contracts related to prices of products.

Incarceration even more cruel to the neurodivergent "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Incarceration even more cruel to the neurodivergent

While imprisonment is a barbaric form of punishment, it's far more cruel to those suffering from mental disorders or intellectual impairment, writes Gerry Georgatos.

Prisons and secure mental health hospitals are crammed with people with various cognitive and neurodiverse conditions.

Many are indefinitely detained. All the while, they are not supported. To the Australian nation, these souls are invisible. But to those of us tormented by close witness of the grim reality, the affected are discriminated against, condemned and locked up.

There is no public register for these indefinite detainments. There are likely thousands of Australians trapped indefinitely in harrow.

Their hearts broke, struggling to understand whats going on, of strange commands, of dense and violent dreams savaging the mind. Theres no expert support in the prisons and inadequate support in forensic hospitals which mimic prisons or Dickensian lunatic asylums. In the mad blasphemous squat that is a cell, lifes brief light can be extinguished. Dead on the inside and a paupers burial.

Prisons are ungodly beasts, hard for the average incarcerated soul to understand and impossible for other types of neurodiverse people who do not understand the world as the majority do.

It is my experience, in general, that people come out of prisons in worse conditions than when they commenced the situational trauma of incarceration.

Be patient with things of this world, it is all too often said, as if to quell rebellion. The wait makes the affected old before their time. We incarcerate like never before, demanding quiet in the darkness. As if its their fault they live and breathe. For certain types of neurodiversity, prison is a perpetual torment.

There are those among the incarcerated whose emotional and intellectual quotients are childlike-akin, who do not offend by malintent. The intellectually impaired Marlon Noble was an incarcerated soul who, with the incumbent West Australian Attorney-Generals support John Quigley was freed on the grounds of his comparatively diminished intellectuality.

I remind of...

Enrolment growth forces NT redistribution back to the drawing board "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The Northern Territory Electoral Commission published its draft boundaries for the 2024 Legislative Assembly election back in May, but that process will now have to start over due to tremendous enrolment growth in some parts of the Territory in recent months in the lead up to the Voice referendum.

The NTEC announced two weeks ago that there had been a substantial amount of enrolment growth concentrated in some parts of the Territory from mid-April 2023 (when the quota for the redistribution was struck) until the end of June 2023.

Overall the size of the electoral roll grew by 4,631 voters, which was 3.1% growth across the Territory. The average electorate has an enrolment of roughly 6,000 voters, so that is quite a substantial increase.

What makes this particularly difficult is that the enrolment growth is concentrated in some areas, although it is a good news story as it suggests an improvement in the dismal enrolment rate in the federal seat of Lingiari.

The growth in urban areas (Alice Springs, Darwin and Palmerston) was quite modest, at just 1.4%, while the remaining nine seats grew by 6.3%.

Indeed if you exclude Goyder and Katherine, which experienced only modest growth, the remaining seven seats increased their enrolment by 7.7%.

68% of the growth during those two and a half months has been concentrated in those seven seats. Those seven seats have gone from 27.8% of the territory total enrolment to 29% in just ten weeks.

This growth has apparently been caused by a major push in the Federal Direct Enrolment Update (FDEU) program from the AEC. We dont yet have the AECs data on enrolment by division in June, so I havent been able to see if there are broader trends. Up to the end of May, Lingiari appeared to be one of the few seats to have a shrinking roll.

At an individual level, this will definitely cause some of the newly drawn seats to no longer fit within the quota. The NTEC has published the updated enrolment statistics based on the old 2020 boundaries, not their previous draft 2024 boundaries, but we know that the seat of Mulka, which was previously 9.2% above the average and was left untouched by the redistribution, is now 15% above the average and will definitely require a redraw.

Individual electorates can be above or below quota without causing broader issues, if that population deviation can be balanced out by the neighbouring seat. But when whole regions are collectively under or over quota that forces bigger changes.

For this next chart, Ive grouped electorates in the same categories I used when analysing the older enrolment data in March.

Haptic technology allows us to feel the future "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Haptic technology allows us to feel the future

The growth of haptic technology in various applications is creating a more immersive experience in fields such as gaming, science and prosthetics. Paul Budde reports.

OVER THE LAST few months, I have written articles about 5G, 6G (2030s) and even 7G (2040s). In my research of these articles, I increasingly have come across the use of haptic technologies. So I started to look into the relationship between haptic technology and new mobile technologies.

Already 5G and even more so, 6G and 7G, offer higher data rates and lower latency than previous generations of wireless technology. This makes them ideal for applications that require real-time communication, such as haptic feedback.

Haptic feedback is the use of touch to create a more immersive experience. It can be used in a variety of applications such as gaming, virtual reality and telepresence. 5G and 6G can provide the high data rates and low latency that are required for haptic feedback to be used in these applications.

There are a number of different haptic technologies available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Some of the most common haptic technologies include:

  • Vibration motors: These motors vibrate to create a sense of touch. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to use, but they can be limited in terms of the range of sensations they can provide.
  • Linear actuators: These actuators move back and forth to create a sense of force. They are more expensive than vibration motors, but they can provide a wider range of sensations.
  • Haptic gloves: These gloves u...

Labor must hear Indigenous voice against Kimba nuclear site "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Jim Green and Michele Madigan, https://indaily.com.au/opinion/2023/07/17/labor-must-hear-indigenous-voice-against-kimba-nuclear-site/

Ahead of tomorrows expected federal court decision on a Barngarla Traditional Owners challenge to the planned Kimba nuclear waste site, Jim Green and Michele Madigan say federal Labor must be consistent on listening to Indigenous concerns.

If the Albanese Labor government wants to restore confidence in its plan for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, it needs to walk the talk and respect Aboriginal voices.

Currently, the government is ignoring the Barngarla Traditional Owners who are unanimous in their opposition to the governments plan for a national nuclear waste dump (or facility) near Kimba on South Australias Eyre Peninsula.

Labor inherited the Kimba dump plan from the Morrison Coalition government. Barngarla Traditional Owners were excluded from a so-called community ballot by the Morrison government. The results of an independent, professional survey of Barngarla Traditional Owners which found absolutely no support for the proposed dump were also ignored.

Jason Bilney, Chair of the Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation, said: It is a simple truth that had we, as the First People for the area, been included in the Kimba community ballot rather than unfairly denied the right to vote, then the community ballot would never have returned a yes vote.

Federal parliaments Joint Committee on Human Rights Committee unanimously concluded in an April 2020 report that the Morrison government was violating the human rights of Barngarla people. Even the Coalition members of the committee endorsed the report.

But the Morrison government continued to ignore the human rights of the Barngarla people.

The Morrison government also tried but failed to pass legislation which would deny Barngarla Traditional Owners the right to a judicial review of the nomination of the Kimba dump site. The draft legislation was blocked by Labor, minor parties and independent Senators.

It took 21 years for the Barngarla people to secure N...

The Barngarla people of South Australias Eyre Peninsula are rejoicing as the Federal Court has overturned the decision to construct a nuclear waste facility on their land in Kimba.

The proposed facility was to store radioactive waste categorised as low and intermediate level.

The Barngarla traditional owners took the matter to the Federal Court, seeking a judicial review. They argued that the facility would disrupt a site of great significance and claimed that they were not adequately consulted before the plan received approval in 2021.

It was important to stop this dump because the Seven Sisters Dreaming goes through there, said Barngarla Elder Aunty Dawn Taylor, who was born at Kimba.

Having a waste dump out there would have just destroyed everything.

The Barngarla native title area covers more than 34,000 square kilometres on Eyre Peninsula, including the town of Kimba.

Borrow, Print, Repeat "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Previously, weve looked too at what the feds have to push with carrots and sticks and the way the two political parties have come together to get more of them.

But the carrots are running out. The US has added US$27 trillion to its debt so far this centuryUS$1 trillion in the last five weeks. Thats money it spentbut didnt have.

And now the Fed is trapped between inflate or die. It must now continue to inflate its economyor its bubble economy will die.

But waitthe headlines tell us that inflation is beaten.

CNN: Inflation fever is finally breaking. The Feds soft landing may be in sight:

If Fed Chair Jerome Powell were any less buttoned up, hed be well within his rights to call a press conference, stride up to the lectern in a t-shirt and board shorts and say three words soft landing, jerks! before dropping the mic and walking out.

For context, a year ago the CPI peaked at 9.1% the worst inflation in more than 40 years. [Now, its half that level.]

That is, to be clear, fan-freakin-tastic.

(For the record, the Fed has a 2% target for inflation. And while the CPI gets more headlines, central bank officials favour a different inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index. The most recent core PCE index reading was 4.6% in May.)

For the record, in other words, it isnt so fan-freakin-tastic after all.

Up, up and away

Inflation is 130% above the Feds target. Prices are far higher than they were two years agoand theyre still going up.

Inflation is always and everywhere a political phenomenon. And if the Feds continue to spend trillions of dollars more than they receive in taxesthey will have to get the money somewhere. Either borrowing or printing. Borrowing pushes up interest rates and crimps the economy leading to lower tax receipts and the need to borrow even more. That leaves only two real choicescutting back on spending or inflating the currency.

But budget cuts run into the brick wall of the US late, degenerate political system. Everybody wants more. Nobody wants less. Republicans no longer oppose the carrots. Democrats no longer abhor the sticks. Instead, the elite of both parties want more of both.

So, inflation is not going away. The Feds will print. And the money will lose value almost as fast as it is created. That is the lesson from countless experiments with overspending and printing press money. There is no reason to expect a different outcome this time.

The road to ruin

But its not just the money. There are two major ways to destroy a great nation inflation and war. Thats where the sticks become deadly. And last week, the US showed up in Vilnius with...

Australias government is wrong to attack the Solomon Islands "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Jim Hayes

The attack on the Solomon Islands for singing a cooperation agreement with China is wrong. Worse, it is an uncalled for intervention in the internal affairs of another nations. Its the deliberate bullying by a local big power of a small neighbour.

Nations that value democracy will hold that a nation belongs to its people and that the course the nation takes is up to them, not for someone from outside wanting to impose their will.

Comments from leading Australian politicians indicate they have a somewhat different view of the world. In his case, it involves trying to block any deal our neighbours might make with China. The reason? The Australian government is locked into the geopolitical ambition of the United States to maintain its dominance in the region.

Australias history in this part of the world has often not been a good one and given to a propensity to play a kind of colonialist role, denying the right of local peoples to be masters of their own destiny. In other words, Australia stood against democracy. We need only consider the roles played in Papua new Guinea, Timor-Leste, and the current backing of the Indonesian occupation of West Papua.

When the Solomon Islands prime minister Manasseh Sogavare insists that Australia is meddling in his nations internal affairs, he makes an exceptionally good point.

Photo from the Australian: Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogavare

The current controversy concerns the deal with China, which seems to have been prompted by Australian moves to renege on its own prior agreement. We dont know the details of this because the matter has been going on behind closed doors. What we do know is that the Solomon Islands are unhappy with the way they see they have been treated. The bottom line is that the Australian government insists that the Solon Islands should be denied this right. This isnt said openly, of course....

New Drug Shows Promise In Slowing Alzheimers Progression, Says Dementia Australia "IndyWatch Feed National"

In a significant breakthrough, Dementia Australia has hailed the release of trial findings unveiling the efficacy of Donanemab, a promising new drug that slows the progression of early Alzheimers symptoms.

Developed by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, the drug functions by stimulating antibodies designed to target and eliminate amyloid plaques from the brain.

A decade ago, in 2011, the leading cause of death for non-Indigenous men and women in Australia was coronary heart disease. This remains the case for men in 2021, but dementia, including Alzheimers disease, claimed the number one ranking for women. (For Indigenous Australians, the leading cause of death remains coronary heart disease, followed by diabetes).

(Source: AIHW)

Maree McCabe, CEO of Dementia Australia, expressed her enthusiasm for this groundbreaking development, hailing it as a critical advancement in diversifying dementia treatment options.

These results instil much-needed hope for those experiencing symptoms, mild cognitive impairment, or early-stage Alzheimers, Ms McCabe said.

The research also underscores the vital significance of early diagnosis, ensuring timely access to treatment and support.

Increasing dementia awareness and understanding will help reduce discrimination and stigma, thus encouraging individuals with cognitive concerns to seek information and support at the earliest opportunity, she said.

Timely support and services have demonstrated superior health, care, and lifestyle outcomes for those affected.

Dementia Australia has urged cautious optimism as Donanemab awaits approval from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for its use in Australia.

Professor Blossom Stephan, Chair of Dementia Curtin University and Dementia Australia, lauded the trials results as encouraging, noting the study revealed that participants with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia experienced a reduction of up to 35 per cent in cognitive decline through Donanemab treatment.

This research also highlights the need to ensure that healthcare services are equipped to deliver the intervention as well as make sure that access to treatment is equitable and available to everyone,...

Frances Macron got caught with his souffl undercooked, with French Shadowstorm/SCALP long-range missiles already found in Ukraine. Meanwhile, public unrest in France builds. All this and more. This weeks nuclear news, but climate is a bigger story "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Some bits of good news:  Positive tipping points could save the climate this man is showing us how.   Deforestation rates plummeted in Brazil.

Last week it was a watershed week.   And it seems that this one is also, though for a largely different reason.  The Ukraine-NATO thing is a mess.  The Western media continues to religiously recite the story of Ukraines successful counter-offensive. But theres whisper of dissension in NATO, and even some whispered criticism of  Volodymyr Zelensky .

But really   the big watershed thing is global heating. At last, the media seems to be abandoning the pretense that global heating effects happen to hit one country, then another   sort of separately. It is becoming obvious that global heating is a global event    at least now enveloping the Northern part of the globe. The War on Journalism: the Case of Julian Assange "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Real Change Is Impossible While Our World Is Shrouded In Secrecy, Caitlin Johnstone, 15 Jul 23

I saw a video clip of Julian Assange speaking in London in 2010 where he made an important observation while explaining the philosophy behind his work with WikiLeaks. He said that all our political theories are to some extent bankrupt in our current situation, because our institutions are so shrouded in secrecy that we cant even know whats really going on in the world.

We can all write about our political issues, we can all push for particular things we believe in, we can all have particular brands of politics, but I say actually its all bankrupt, Assange said. And the reason its all bankrupt, and all current political theories are bankrupt and particular lines of political thought, is because actually we dont know what the hell is going on. And until we know the basic structures of our institutions how they operate in practice, these titanic organizations, how they behave inside, not just through stories but through vast amounts of internal documentations until we know that, how can we possibly make a diagnosis? How can we set the direction to go until we know where we are? We dont even have a map of where we are. So our first task is to build up a sort of intellectual heritage that describes where we are. And once we know where we are, then we have a hope of setting course for a different direction. Until then, I think all political theories to greater and lesser extents of course are bankrupt.

.The fact that all the most important aspects of our civilizations operation are hidden, manipulated and obfuscated by the powerful makes a joke of the very idea of democracy, because how can people know what government policies to vote for if they can...

Reserve Banks loses leverage "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Spare a thought for the new Governor of the Reserve Bank, Michelle Bullock. In the past few days many have reflected on the mistakes of out-going Governor Philip Lowe, sometimes comparing him to earlier Governors who seemed to use the interest-rate lever with more finesse.

But the more likely explanation is not that Lowe made mistakes by holding rates too high for too long to meet a non-existent wage spiral; holding rates too low for too long fearing an economic crash that did not happen; and then jacking them up too high too quickly.

Rather it is that Lowes governorship coincided with changes in the Australian economy that made the interest-rate lever a much less predictable tool. And it will not be any different for Bullock.

Treasurer and later Prime Minister Paul Keating frequently referred to the economic levers. Pull or push a lever and the train would speed or slow. You could hand the train over to an independent Reserve Bank to push or pull that lever so the train would not derail but stay on the track.

But the Australian economy is now much less like a train on a fairly predictable track and more like, say, an aircraft requiring a lot more levers controlling not just speed but also sideways and vertical motion.

It is a more complex and different economy. You cannot, as in the past, just increase interest rates and expect household demand to tighten and for firms to respond by decreasing prices to continue to attract custom with a concomitant reduction in inflation.

Several big differences between the 2020s and earlier decades come to mind: Covid; different corporate behaviour; new household sources of money; different consumer responses; and employment arrangements.

Covid taught households to stock up; to save for rainy days; to spend more wisely. But only up to a point, and in erratic and unpredictable ways. The corporate response to Covid was to take advantage of the panic engendered by the fear of not having the full array of goods available immediately. Demand was inelastic: we must have toilet paper; we must have our 4WD; or whatever goods we need and we will pay whatever is necessary.

So, prices did not fall in a depressed market, dampening inflation. Rather, savings and other assets...

The future of the global energy sector is in the hands of Artificial Intelligence. ..

Cuba condemns US deployment of nuclear submarine in its waters "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

 https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/w/cuba-condemns-us-deployment-nuclear-submarine-its-waters

BEN CHACKO, SUNDAY, JULY 16, 2023

CUBA protested at the weekend over the US deployment of a nuclear-armed submarine to its waters.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry said a nuclear submarine equipped with Trident II ballistic missiles had entered waters around Guantanamo Bay, the illegal US military base imposed on occupied Cuban territory from 1903, at the start of July.

The presence of a nuclear submarine forces one to question the military reason for its presence in this peaceful region of the world, against what objective it is directed, and what strategic purpose it is pursuing.

The submarines presence in its waters for at least a week constitutes a provocative escalation by the United States, whose political or strategic motives are unknown, it added.

But US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller retorted that the United States will continue to fly and sail as well as move its military forces where it deems appropriate.

All 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean had signed the declaration of the region as a zone of peace in Havana in 2014, Cuba pointed out: but despite this the United States has established more than 70 military bases in the region.

The US has nine military bases in Panama, 12 in Puerto Rico, nine in Colombia and eight in Peru.

The countrys Congress which overthrew elected socialist president Pedro Castillo in December and has waged a crackdown that has killed scores of democracy protesters since authorised the entry of naval units and foreign military personnel with weapons of war in January. Earlier this month, US congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced an amendment to the countrys military budget seeking to suspend funds for operations in Peru given their potential role in helping suppress the democracy movement.

The US claims to lease Guantanamo Bay from Cuba for a token rent of $4,085 (3,120) a year, but Cuba has rejected the agreement since the revolution of 1959 and does not cash the cheques, which are still made out to the pre-revolutionary, now nonexistent post of treasurer-general of the republic. Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro once showed journalists a desk in his office stuffed with the uncashed cheques.

How much water do French nuclear plants use? "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Figures showing that the cooling of reactors could capture 30% of water resources have been removed from the site of the Ministry of Environment.

Le Monde ,By Perrine Mouterde, March 26, 2023,

How much do nuclear power plants contribute to total water consumption in France? This simple question no longer seems to have a clear answer. At the root of the confusion lies the Ministry of Environmental Transitions removal of a background paper on the resourcing and use of water in France on around March 10. According to this fact sheet from the statistical service, power plant cooling represented the second most water-consuming activity in the country (31%), behind agriculture (45%) and ahead of drinking water (21%) and industrial use (4%). The annual volume of water consumed in mainland France, over the period 2008-2018, was estimated at 5.3 billion cubic meters.

In the midst of the review of the parliamentary bill to accelerate the construction of new reactors, the figure of 31% was being used by opponents of atomic energy to demonstrate that this energy source was not adapted to climate change. Once and for all, lets say it, simply and firmly: at this rate, there will soon not be enough water in our rivers to cool the nuclear power plants!, stated Marine Tondelier the national secretary of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV, Greens) on March 7, based on this data.

Gyrgy Ligeti, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and bold red typography the sentient sound of CORINs Lux Aeterna. "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

  • :: CORIN on The Playlist with Darren Lesaguis

Melbourne producer CORINs second album Lux Aeterna is made of musical lightbeams. Try to follow the path of any one sound and youll quickly become entangled, as each shimmers and glides before doubling over, looping back in on itself, and scattering to trail patterns of beautifully indiscernible self-reflexivity. Underneath this layer of breathless light shifts a restless, formless being, a sentient sound slowly floating like an amoeba through time. Its really damn cool.

CORIN joined Darren Lesaguis on The Playlist to chat all about the new record, which is our Album of the Week this week at FBi.

Lux Aeterna was made mostly in 2020 and 2021, and was finished by the beginning of 2022. It borrows its title, a latin phrase meaning eternal light, from a choral work written by Hungarian-Austrian modernist composer Gyrgy Ligeti. Ligeti and his 20th century counterparts were a formative influence for CORIN, who was classically trained in piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Over the past couple of years Ive been practising music and sort of finding a way to merge all of those different interests and styles in a way thats authentic to myself.

The resultant celestial space opera is at once futuristic, bygone, and eternal, like a sci-fi novel from the 1800s, or the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The 1968 film is an influence CORIN cited explicitly, and also implicitly in her record Kubrick included several Ligeti...

After eight years of good old-fashioned yum cha, Geelongs Golden Dragon Yum Cha has closed its doors "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

For the past eight years in a historic former bank in the heart of Geelong, sat one of the best destinations for the glorious feasting ritual of yum cha Golden Dragon Yum Cha Restaurant.

Taking over the 1888 Boom Classicism style two-storey brick bank, the dining destination (co-owned by Bryan Mu the restaurateur behind Shinra Ramen and Toki) earned itself a solid reputation among yum cha enthusiasts since opening back in 2015 for their take on the traditional Cantonese brunch, involving Chinese tea and dim sum small plates of steam, pan-fried and deep-fried dishes to be shared.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Boasting a menu full of classics with a slight twist to them, the restaurant officially announced its closure to social media back in June, citing post-covid trading and financial challenges.

After eight years, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Golden Dragon Yumcha. It has been an incredible journey serving our esteemed patrons and being part of your dining experiences, the post said.

Due to after covid tough trading and financial challenge, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations. While this was not an easy choice, we believe it is the right one for the long-term sustainability of our business.

With its prime position in the CBD, Golden Dragons yum cha was one of the best excuses to get together with friends with a tonne of food, a few teas and a bottle of soft drink or two.

The business expressed its appreciation to its customers over the years for allowing them to be part of the citys hospitality story for almost a decade.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has dined with us throughout the years. Your loyalty and support have been instrumental in making Golden Dragon Yumcha a beloved dining destination within our community. It has been our pleasure to serve you and share our passion for exquisite Chinese cuisine.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all our customers, staff members, and community for your incredible support and patronage throughout the years. We will always remember the laughter...

A large group came to Mount Alexander last Sunday. The walk began at Dog Rocks then travelled south along Whisky Gully on the eastern side of the mount. On reaching the Leanganook Picnic Area the group headed north along the Goldfields Track to Dog Rocks. The winter sunshine was perfect for meandering along the gully. Fungi expert Joy Clusker provided expert help with identification backed up by Liz Martin who navigated the route. Unfortunately we had missed the best fungi months in May and June but there were still plenty around as well as abundant moss displays. Liz Martin sent us the following photos.

Entries are now open for The UpStart Award, offering a $10,000 grant to emerging Victorian songwriters "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The annual award is funded by a music-loving family in Melbourne and the winner will be decided by a panel of local artists and music experts.

You might still be busking, you may have recorded a few tracks, or you might be playing pub gigs; but youre not on the map yet. Well, then this could be the award for you.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The award will be adjudicated by a panel consisting of Victorian artists Angie McMahon and Shane Howard, and a range of industry experts from community radio, retail, and streaming services.

Applications opened on Friday July 14 and close at midnight August 31. The winner will be announced in mid-November.

Entrants for the UpStart Award must be individual songwriters; no bands. If you are in a band, the application may be submitted (and therefore awarded to) the bands songwriter.

Their definition of an emerging artist means you are not signed to a major record company and you have not played major venues regularly. You are in the development stage of your music career.

Plus, you need to live in Victoria and have lived here for the last two years.

Previous winners include:

  • 2017 Jade Imagine
  • 2018 Ryan Downey
  • 2019 Gena Rose Bruce
  • 2020 Chitra Ridwan
  • 2021 Georgia Delves (Georgia State Line)

News Corps blurring of news and views damaging society "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

News Corps blurring of news and views damaging society

Failing to distinguish journalism from commentary and opinion is making News Corp a danger to our society, writes Dr Victoria Fielding.

IN NOVEMBER 2020, former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull berated The Australians editor-at-large, Paul Kelly, for the newspapers record of promoting climate denial.

Despite Rupert Murdoch having previously denied his news outlets deny climate science and action, Kelly implied his newspaper did hold an opinion on climate change when he responded:

We have many publications that are dedicated to promoting the cause of climate change and radical action on climate change, so that's okay, is it? It's okay to be a propagandist for one side, but if one is a critic or sceptic about some of these issues, that's not okay.

Kelly admitted that News Corp presents news about issues like climate change in a style that more closely resembles commentary and opinion rather than factual analysis.

When journalists become commentators and commentators call themselves journalists, the public loses trust in the authority of real journalists to tell it what is happening in the world. News Corps melding of facts with opinion is not only degrading the cultural authority and strength of the news media industry but is also degrading Australian democracy.

The medias differentiation between facts and opinion used to be like a wall between church and state. Printed newspapers made clear where the news pages ended and where the opinion pages began so that readers knew when...

Dolphins teaching each other to beg a concern "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

University of Queensland researchers have discovered dolphins in the Moreton Bay Area, teaching fellow dolphins to beg for food from recreational fishers.

This sophisticated behaviour was first noticed in a study into the social structures of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins.

Since fishing is popular in the region, dolphins have now begun to take advantage of the feeds. But researchers warn this adaptive strategy may pose long term risks, and spread throughout wider dolphin populations.

Researchers also state better policing and awareness of illegal dolphin feeding is essential in avoiding harmful effects on these marine mammals.

ACT Bill to Raise the Age falls short for 12 and 13 year olds "IndyWatch Feed National"

Australias first jurisdiction set to pass legislation to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 will fall short of its obligations to protect the human rights of children.

A report from ACT parliaments Standing Committee on Justice and Community Safety, tabled on Friday, failed to recommend necessary changes to proposed legislation to raise the age. Advocates have been unequivocal in calling for the Barr Government to raise the age to at least 14 with no carve-outs.

The Committees report ignored advice from medical experts and Aboriginal, legal and human right advocates by failing to recommend the removal of carve outs for children aged 12 and 13, who will remain criminally responsible for some behaviour, from the Bill.

Medical evidence is abundantly clear that children under the age of 14 do not have the capacity for criminal responsibility. Instead the ACT government will continue to criminalise behaviours that are best understood as responses to trauma.

Despite hearing evidence on the significant harm and trauma children in prisons are subjected to, the Committee failed to make recommendations that could stop children aged 12 and 13 from being locked away in the coming years, opting to support the governments decision to delay raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14 until 2025.

Recommendations for stronger oversight of intensive therapy places under the Optional Protocol on the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) are welcomed, as well as the inclusion of Elders on the therapeutic support panel for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.

Quotes Attributed to Maggie Munn, National Director, Change the Record:

While we commend the ACT government for raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14 it is disappointing that this will be delayed until 2025 and will include carve outs for 12 and 13 year olds.

"The government seems set on incarcerating children who don't understand the gravity of their behaviour, and then wondering why that behaviour doesn't change. Children belong in schools and playgrounds and need to be supported to learn from their mistakes, not locked in cages."

Quotes Attributed to Amala Ramarathinam, Acting Managing Lawyer, Human Rights Law Centre:

The Committees report represents a missed opportunity to recommend crucial changes to the Bill. Children will continue to experience significant harm and trauma while the ACT Government delays raising the age to 14 and continues to criminalise 12 and 13 year olds for certain behaviours.

Police should not have the power to arrest and lock up children under the age of criminal responsibility. 10 year olds still have their baby teeth and 12 year olds are still in primary school. The Bill must be urgently amende...

The government of doing nothing "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Last week, Labour chickenshitted out on a wealth tax, with Prime Minister (for now) Chris Hipkins ruling it out as long as he holds office (which sortof suggests a solution, doesn't it?) But taxing wealth to build a more equal Aotearoa wasn't the only thing they chickenshitted out on - they also refused to break up the rapacious supermarket duopoly which is robbing us blind. Why? Largely it seems because they'd get the blame if it went wrong, and so they'd rather let Foodstuffs and Progressive keep screwing us than do anything about it. And today, there's the icing on the cake: a consultants report advising that the government's current half-measures are ineffective and will condemn us to another 20 years of supermarket robbery:

The Governments much-touted reforms of the supermarket industry are unlikely to result in a material improvement in competition, according to its own advisers.

Instead, without additional action, consumers can expect little to change for the better over the next 20 years, with a risk that the variety of products stocked by the supermarkets will continue to reduce and that supermarkets gross profit margins will continue to rise, ministers have been told.

Crushing the supermarket duopoly and limiting its excess profits is something that would have a huge effect on the cost of living, and on poverty. But Labour just won't do it, because they're chickenshits afraid of upsetting the status quo. "In it for you"? You be the judge...

New South Wales activist group Pride in Protest and drag performers have called out local councils for cancelling Drag Storytime events targeted by right-wing groups. During Pride Month in June, far-right protesters made headlines by targeting numerous drag events, particularly family-friendly Drag Storytimes, across Victoria. Councils cancelled many over safety concerns. New South Wales performers ...

Hindutva Goes to Washington: Narendra Modis US Visit "IndyWatch Feed National"

Again, he was at it, that charming show on two legs, playful and coy.  Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been burning the charismatic fuel of late, making the necessary emissions in visiting friendly countries.  Each time, he seems to be getting away with more and more, currying (pun intended) favour with his hosts and landing the necessary deals.

For all the excitement of going to a fellow cricket loving state such as Australia, no one was under any illusion about the prize.  Easy gains there on matters of commerce, education and security: a pliant PM, a pliant Cabinet, a political and business class hungering for access to a country which recently passed China as the most populous on the planet.  In all of this, Modi had the audacity to urge Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to do something about reported acts of vandalism against Hindu temples in Melbourne.

In scale, nothing was going to compare to courting the superpower that, for all its might, teeters.  On his June visit to the United States, Modi was building on earlier efforts to show India as a viable partner in a number of areas.

The Modi visit exemplified the calculations of the moment.  The US has been rather clumsy of late, engaging in a foreign policy described by former US Secretary of the Treasury, Lawrence Summers, as a bit lonely.  US foreign policy makers have tended to miss a bit or two, not least understanding the value Indian officials place on their military relationship with Moscow.  The Indian political establishment is also mindful about how useful New Delhi is seen in Washington, the traditional counter to Beijing. That counter, however, is seen as subordinate to maintaining US supremacy under the lecturing guise of the rules-based order.

Such poses are simply not acceptable in either the Modi worldview or those of Indian policy makers.  As Indias External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has opined with a tart frankness, Washingtons power can be described as a transient moment of American unipolarity.  To assume, arrogantly, that history was at its end at the conclusion of the Cold War was a Eurocentric analysis jettisoned by nationalism. It is exactly such nationalism that Modi brims with.

The joint statement from the two countries made familiar, and predictable assumptions.  Much of it was frothy.  Both Biden and Modi affirmed a vision of the United States and India as among the closest partners in the world a partnership of democracies looking into the 21st century with hope, ambition, and confidence.  Naturally, there is no mention of Modis nationalistic....

What happens in Wall is activity at the level of language, its rhythms and repetitions, rather than through the mechanism of plot. Australia-EU FTA talks stalled over agricultural exports and GIs, may resume in August "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

July 17, 2023: Trade Minister Farrell  and Prime minster Albanese announced last week that EU concessions in negotiating the Australia-EU FTA were not good enough and that Australia would not sign a deal unless it had real commercial benefits for Australia.

Australia wants more access for Australian lamb, beef and other agricultural exports and rejects the EUs refusal to allow Australian producers to use names like prosecco and feta cheese (Geographical Indications).

EUs market of over 400 million people gives it greater bargaining power, but the EU also wants access to Australias critical mineral deposits, which are needed for production of batteries and other products for the transition to clean energy. EU representatives have also said more work was required to address these key outstanding issues. Minister Farrell commented that there was possibility of further talks next month.

The DFAT website reports that talks have concluded on other key areas of concern to AFTINET. We do not yet know if earlier EU proposals for longer monopolies on medicines have been removed, and whether the commitments on labour rights and environmental standards, including commitments on reduction of carbon emissions, are fully enforceable in the same way as other commitments in the agreement.

However, the details of these commitments will not be revealed until after the deal is concluded. The EU has a policy of releasing and publishing independent evaluations of the texts of trade agreements after they are concluded but before they are signed. The Albanese Labor government has a policy for a more open process, including independent evaluation of agreements before they are signed. The EU agreement will be their first chance to put this policy into practice.

Institutional cruelty exposed by three royal commissions

Recent inquiries have brought to light the lack of accountability from government institutions engaging in cruelty and human rights abuses, writes Max Costello.

TWO PRESIDING officers Federal Court Justice Bernard Murphy in the case of Mostafa Moz Azimitabar, and Robodebt Royal Commissioner Catherine Holmes recently said damning things about the ethics of major Australian institutions and their senior office holders. Similar words were said in 2018 by Banking Royal Commissioner Kenneth Hayne and in 2017 by Justice Peter McClellan, chair of the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Royal Commission.

So, how to prevent, punish (and thus deter) such embedded cruelty in the behaviour of both government and non-government institutions? In pub test terms, it seems amazing that no institutions have been prosecuted and no senior officers gaoled.

On Thursday 6 July, Justice Murphy found against a civil claim, lodged by Kurdish refugee Moz, that his detention in two hotel APODs (alternative places of detention) was unlawful. Yes, it was lawful, Murphy decided. But, he added in post-decision remarks, that did not imply his approval of Mozs treatment by the Government.

Murphy said:

I can only wonder of the lack of thought, indeed the lack of care and humanity, in detaining a person with psychiatric and psychological problems in the hotels [for] 14 months.

Ruthless Cats in Bomber blitz "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Geelongs premiership defence is finally gathering steam after crushing Essendon by 77 points in an ominous performance at GMHBA Stadium.

As they often do at Kardinia Park, the Cats ended the contest early after slamming through the opening seven goals of the match to lead by 46 points at quarter-time on Saturday.

Shell-shocked Essendon was able to steady during the second term but it was already too late as the Cats inflicted further pain during the 18.14 (122) to 7.3 (45) triumph.

The result lifts Geelong up to fifth the highest position it has sat in all season after dropping the opening three matches of its flag defence.

The sight of a rampaging Cats unit will strike fear into the rest of the AFL, after coach Chris Scott during the week declared they are the danger.

Scott said it was probably Geelongs best performance of the season.

I think, were in general, getting closer to our best footy, and even from a personal perspe ctive, we were confident going into this week, he said.

It feels like were getting close to our best footy which were pretty confident thats going to be hard to beat.

Geelong could still pinch a top-four spot and a double finals chance as they sit just a game-and-a-half behind Melbourne.

It is no coincidence one of the Cats most powerful performances came in a match when star forward Jeremy Cameron, Norm Smith medallist Isaac Smith and premiership defender Jake Kolodjashni returned from injury.

Cameron, who missed the previous two games through concussion, spent periods off the ground after being involved in multiple collisions.

The 30-year-old played out the match and waited until the dying stages to kick his first and only goal of the match.

But fellow star Cats forward Tom Hawkins picked up the slack with five goals, four of them in the second-half.

Speedy midfielder Max Holmes had one of the best games of his young career, gathering a career-high 33 disposals 21 in the first half.

Geelong forward Gryan Miers, in his 100th game, booted the first goal of the match and delivered a memorable celebration after being at the centre of a meme comparing him to soccer legend Lionel Messi this week.

While the Cats pulled out party tricks, Essendon was on the end of their heaviest defeat since losing to Port Adelaide by 84 points in round 22 last season the match that ended Ben Ruttens stint as coach.

The Bombers entered the match on a high after smashing Adelaide last week in a performance captain Zach Merrett labelled as the Bombers best in his 10 years at the club.

Clearly we were really disappointed after a good performance last week but its just more evidence to me that its a really tough competition, Essendon coach Brad Scott said.

The long walk: creek valleys, category 1 climbs "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A hardy group of five set out in brilliant frosty weather yesterday for FOBIFs June long walk. Walk conditions were perfect, as was the length of the walk, estimated as between 12 and 24 kilometres. We suspect the second estimate was a little subjective.

Middleton Creek, July 16: check last weeks post to see how the water levels have dropped..but the creek is still running strongly.

The walk covered the wonderfully various country at the south end of the Diggings Park: substantial moss covered rock walls, wide green valleys, rocky ascents, unusually impressive giant eucalypts. The south point was the strongly running Middleton Creek. Fungi were in abundance, and the recent wet weather had given the bush a particularly lush appearance.

Our thanks  to Jeremy Holland for as usual providing an intriguing route through little known corners.

Next months walk is in the wildflower hotspot of the Maldon Historic Reserve. Check the website for details.

A downbeat note: the destruction goes on "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A downbeat note for FOBIFs walkers along Wewak track yesterday was the sight of yet more evidence of timber theft along this track.

Wewak Track, July 16: FOBIF has regularly reported destruction of this kind along the track.

Wewak track seems to be a favourite spot for timber thieves, and their efforts are threatening to strip this picturesque track of its better trees. Parks Victoria seems to be powerless to stop the destruction. Thieves operate comfortably, sure in the belief that the last person they can expect to see in this bush is a ranger: readers of this site will be familiar with our observations on the under resourcing of our parks.

Weve been assured by Parks in the past that the problem is being tackled at the distribution end. The method doesnt seem to be working: and of course things are not helped by the explosion in the cost of home heating.

Pedestrians urged to Stop. Look. Live "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Pedestrians are being urged to Stop. Look. Live. as part of a new Crime Stoppers Victoria campaign delivered in partnership with Victoria Police.

The campaign will focus on reducing the number of pedestrians seriously injured or killed while crossing the road in built up areas, where there is a speed limit of 60km/h.

Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith said the campaign would use a variety of techniques to educate vulnerable pedestrians on how they can stay safe using Victorian roads.

Every Victorian deserves to get home safely and the easiest way to achieve this is to identify risks and follow the road rules, Ms Smith said.

No matter whether you are a pedestrian, driver or cyclist on the road, we challenge everyone to stop and think, is this safe?

According to Victoria Police and TAC data, 70 percent of all pedestrian deaths in Victoria occur in metropolitan Melbourne.

The most vulnerable people are primary school children aged 4-12, intoxicated pedestrians aged 30-39 and elderly pedestrians aged over 70.

Ms Smith said 36 pedestrians had been killed on Victorian roads over the past 12 months a figure she hoped would decrease with more education.

We all play a role in keeping our roads safe and Crime Stoppers Victoria is offering vulnerable pedestrians the tools they need to use our roads safely, she said

We have seen 175 pedestrians killed on our roads over the last five years, and a significant number of those have been in 60 km/h zones.

We hope with more education and awareness we can reduce the number of injuries and most importantly, deaths on our roads.

As part of the campaign, Crime Stoppers Victoria will hit the streets to actively engage with high-risk pedestrians to educate them on how they can help keep our roads incident free.

Crime Stoppers will also visit locations across Melbourne which have the highest number of pedestrian fatalities, focusing particularly on community hubs and primary schools.

Victoria Police Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin OBrien said police were focused on protecting the most vulnerable road users.

Too many vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, are being killed or seriously injured and its all too preventable.

We are grateful to have Crime Stoppers Victoria launching this campaign, along with the many councils, schools and businesses that will support this initiative to improve road safety, he said.

Everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads safe, and we urge everyone to think not only about their own safety but how their behaviour can impact the safety of others.

Helping little anglers get hooked on fishing "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Victorias next generation of recreational fishers are getting the opportunity to get hooked on fishing, with free Little Angler Kits for kids across Victoria.

Outdoor Recreation Minister Sonya Kilkenny announced 60,000 kits will be made available to grade five primary students in more than 1900 Victorian schools later this year.

The kits will set families up with everything they need to wet a line including a fishing rod and reel, line, tackle box, some tackle and a Kids Guide to Fishing that includes information and links to educational resources to learn the basics such as fishing safety, knots and rigs.

The kits will help youngsters get active, learn about the aquatic environment and have fun in the great outdoors whether they be down the coast, on Port Phillip Bay or by a river in regional Victoria.

The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) is leading the roll out and has released a tender today for the supply of kits, with schools encouraged to register early interest.

The Little Angler Kits complements several other initiatives led by the VFA to encourage youngsters to connect with nature and enjoy Victorias spectacular waterways. This includes the stocking of almost 10 million fish last season, more than any other state in the country.

For the September school holidays, 80 family fishing lakes across the state share in more than 60,000 catchable-size rainbow trout to provide children the chance to catch their first fish.

Every year, free VicFishKids events provide kids with the opportunity to try fishing with help from experts and Fishcare volunteers. All fishing gear is supplied and every child heads home with a free rod to continue their fishing journey on their next holiday with family and friends.

We want more young people getting into fishing because we know it brings people together in the great outdoors, boosts local businesses and encourages Victorians to discover new parts of this great state, Ms Kilkenny said.

Offering free Little Angler Kits through schools helps the next generation of fishers reel in a hobby they can enjoy for a lifetime.

Conquering my bogey bird "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

In recent years Ive been quietly pursuing this bird, the Eastern Barn Owl.

Often regarded as a boom and bust species the Eastern Barn Owl is relatively common in the district and can be found across the Moolort Plains and in wooded farmland areas. Its numbers fluctuate with those of its major prey, rodents.

Why then has it been my bogey bird?

Ive observed it on a number of occasions, usually at night in the car headlights or sadly deceased on a country road it hunts low to the ground and vehicle strike is a major threat to this beautiful owl. A few times a bird has departed from its roost before I could raise the camera.

Late yesterday afternoon, acting on a tip-off, I finally managed to photograph an Eastern Barn Owl. High up in a veteran Yellow Gum the bird emerged cautiously from a large hollow and basked for a few minutes in the fading winter sunshine. What a thrill!

Barn Owls are a cosmopolitan species, for a long time most forms were classified as Tyto alba, with separate races regarded as subspecies. Recent taxonomic studies have placed the Australian form as a distinct species, Tyto delicatula. Unlike the majority of Australian owls Barn Owls can breed continuously as long as food is abundant. The spot where I observed this bird was typical of an ideal breeding site, possibly one that has been in use for many years.

A Traded-off Life. "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

A traded-off life.

Would it be wiser to act the fool,

And be graced with effusive public bravos!,

Than to be a keeper of inherent knowledge,

And be shunned, scorned in the shadows?

For what benefits an actor who diligently practices his lines,

To be upstaged by a pretentious mummer ad-libbing atrocious strine?

The same for the exacting pedant, research wise,

Entangled by a buffoon practised in compromise.

And why mock the woman, choosing to stay in the home,

Seeking no confected career, but as mother to her bairns,

More than the unskilled female, labouring ,

Wasting her life in dreary, low-paid slaving,

To prove a point of managed social-equality in the making?

Or the young person choosing a skilled trade,

Over facile delusion of E-Commerce; a beggar-man made?

Perhaps we all have been taken for a ride,

By some low-brow, middle-class philosophic pap,

With that promise of healthy, wealthy and happy,

When all the while turning us into parasited patsies,

Thrown onto THEIR dole when they close THEIR factories.

Perhaps there IS only one final solution,

That is to enact a Chairman Mao-style cultural revolution,

Expel from governance all middle-class non-producing schemers,

To be replaced with skilled-trades educated workers,

And be rid of those opportunist, entrepreneurial fools,

To recreate a life full-lived by more equitable social rules!

Capitalism a death knell for democracy "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Capitalism a death knell for democracy

Neoliberalism and corporate greed are destroying the idea of a fair and equal society, dividing classes into 'us versus them', writes Dermot Daley.

ECONOMISTS SUCH AS Reserve Bank (RBA) governor Philip Lowe think that economics is almost a science, but in effect, there is no more correlation between economics and science than there is between astrology and astronomy.

The following is an opinion and as such, it carries no more weight than any other opinion. Although it probably has greater validity than when Lowe opined that interest rates would not change for several years and then progressively increased the rate to address inflation without evidence that his actions were having the desired effect.

Mr Lowe has since moved on. One might hope that the new governor of the RBA will more closely examine the inflationary effects of unearned benefits, such as executive salaries and middle-class welfare, on the markets compulsion to gouge the cost of household goods and services.

Modern economists believe that their career path was founded by Adam Smith in his seminal work, The Wealth of Nations; however, Smith was a sociologist before the word economist was coined and his thinking referred to the need for sound fiscal management to nurture the whole of society. He was, after all, living in the Age of Reason.

By the third quarter of the 20th Century, socialism and democracy, the two prevailing ideologies, had lost their way. Socialism linked itself to communism (whereby some are more equal than others, which proved dysfunctional except where practised in arcane religious orders). Simultaneously, democracy, with its sibling free enterprise, had been hijacked by capitalism.

The death of democracy was sea...

New school for controversial site in Lennox "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Super Lot 5, corner of Snapper and Montwood Drives, Lennox Head. Photo David Lowe.

Clarence Property, the developer of Lennox Heads Epiq estate, has announced the sale of Super Lot 5, on the corner of Montwood and Snapper Drive, to the NSW Department of Education.

The 4.2ha site will now become the site of the new Lennox Head Primary School, having previously been mooted by the developer as the location of a retirement facility and then a medium-density integrated housing development of over 100 dwellings.

Having run into problems with Ballina Shire Council advancing that idea, Clarence Property appealed to the NSW Department of Planning to change the planned use of the land, but that has now been set aside by the new announcement.

Ballina Cr Kiri Dicker, a critic of the housing development plan, has enthusiastically welcomed the latest news, describing it as an enormous win for the community and a perfect site for the Lennox Head Public School.

On social media, Cr Dicker said, I still cant stop smiling at the news that our new school will be located right in the heart of the Epiq Estate, which is home to so many young families.

Super charged weather is warning that much more climate action is necessary "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed by Joe Montero

Once again, the world is being warned by nature of the disaster climate warming is causing. This year has seen record heatwaves in Europe and devastating floods in other parts of the world. The planet is now paused on the eve of  an El Nio on a scale never seen before.

These sort of weather events are not new. Records have been breaking year after year. Ice cap melts, raising sea levels, and a slowing down of the Atlantic conveyor are major causes of worsening weather patterns. 3 July saw the hottest day for the planet ever recorded. The evidence is indisputable.

Massive  cyclone activity in the Indian Ocean, sinkholes appearing in California, unbearable heat in Spain, the spread of bushfires in Canada, record ocean water temperatures, are the reality. Records are being smashed. Species eh]extinction is accelerating, and ultimately, our own extinction is a real possibility.

Yet many governments, including that of Australia, dont seem to notice. They remain in a denial zone, too busy pleasing their big money backers to bother. This is a new wakeup call. We must call out our governments or their failure to act.  We must not just get angry. Its important to divert our anger into constructive action.

What does this mean? It means becoming active in our communities, joining pour organisations, being loud, and taking our demand for change to those who hold the power.  Our survival depends on winning this war. And it is a war. Those who stand in the way of the necessary climate action must be vanquished.

Its just as important to move beyond protest, towards being pro-active in building the future, by being involved in projects that cut emissions. When governments dont do it, its communities that must act. There is some of this already. But there must be...

PMID: 36901143 Abstract Title:  The Global Association between Egg Intake and the Incidence and Mortality of Ischemic Heart Disease-An Ecological Study. Abstract:  The relationship between egg consumption and ischemic heart disease (IHD) remains controversial as there is still no clear answer regarding the relationship, with research limited to a few geographical regions. In the current study, we conducted a longitudinal analysis of the association between egg intake and IHD incidence (IHDi) and mortality (IHDd) using 28 years of international data from 1990 to 2018. Egg intake (g/day/capita) by country was obtained from the Global Dietary Database. Age-standard IHDi and IHDd rates per 100,000 subjects in each country were obtained from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease database. The analysis included a total of 142 countries with populations of at least one million, for which all data were available from 1990 to 2018. Eggs are consumed worldwide, and regional differences in consumption are also shown. Utilizing IHDi and IHDd as objective variables and egg intake as an explanatory variable, the analysis was conducted using linear mixed models, which controlled for inter- and intra-country variation from year to year. The results showed a significant negative association between egg intake, and IHDi (-0.2530.117,

TUC Accused of Frustrating Formation of Organized Labour Structure

By GNA

July 16, 2023

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has accused the Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC) of frustrating the conclusion of the process and the adoption of the draft of the committee to put in place proper organized labour structures.

GFL noted that instead of building proper structures to constitute Organized Labour, the TUC instead adopted a knee-jerk and ad hoc approach to dealing with labour issues.

TUC is not the same as Organized Labour, Mr. Abraham Koomson, the Secretary General of the GFL, told newsmen in Tema, stressing that the power of the TUC to legally represent all workers in Ghana was revoked with the amendment of the Industrial Relations Act (1960), Act 299.

Mr. Koomson added that the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) replaced the TUC with Organized Labour, adding that it did not mention the structure and organogram of Organized Labour, a lacuna that, the TUC had been taking advantage of.

This, the Federation said, would enable labour to legitimately exercise its mandate to holistically address the concerns of the rank and file.

Organized Labour, which is a term (name) provided under the laws of Ghana, represents a body of recognized and independent labour unions, federations, and associations working in concert to pursue the common interest of working people in and of Ghana, he explained.

He recalled that to cure this problem, GFL resorted to the High Court for some answers, adding, however, that the court advised that they go for a settlement, out of which TUC and GFL agreed on three things.

The terms of settlement dated April 25, 2010, indicated that TUC and GFL were to work together to get a working definition of the term organized labour, an organogram for decision making within organized labour, and a timetable for the adoption by all labour unions of the working document and operationalizing the same.

He indicated that following this, a nine-member committee with representatives of labour unions such as ICU, TUC, CLOGSAG, GFL, and others came out with a...

Harnessing the Healing Power of Smart Stem Cells Derived From Human Fat "IndyWatch Feed National"

<p><p>Recent research has uncovered a new type of smart stem cell known as Induced Multipotent Stem Cells (iMS), marking a significant step forward in the field of regenerative medicine. These iMS cells, derived from readily accessible human fat cells, have shown an impressive ability to adapt and transform in animal studies, thus demonstrating their potential for tissue repair<a href= "https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/health/scientists-are-step-closer-developing-smart-stem-cells-%E2%80%93-and-theyre-made-human-fat" id="user-content-fnref-1%5E" rel="noopener" target="_new" name= "user-content-fnref-1%5E">1</a>.</p> <p>John Pimanda, a professor at UNSW Medicine & Health, explains that iMS cells are unique in their ability to respond to their environment. The idea that stem cells can respond and adapt to their surroundings to repair various types of damaged tissue is novel, and could lead to a paradigm shift in stem cell research and treatment strategies1.

<h2>The Generation of Smart Stem Cells</h2> <p>Scientists created iMS cells by exposing human fat cells to a compound mixture, which triggered a process that resulted in the cells losing their original identity and behaving like smart stem cells. Interestingly, these reprogrammed cells remained dormant when injected into mice, until an injury occurred. Following an injury, the cells adapted and transformed into the required tissue for repair.</p> <h2>iMS Cells: Adaptive Chameleons of Regenerative Medicine</h2> <p>Heres how these iMS cells are transformative in the field of regenerative medicine:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Responsive to Surroundings</strong>: iMS cells behave like chameleons, responding to local cues and seamlessly blending into the tissue that needs healing.</li> <li><strong>Unprecedented Abilities</strong>: Unlike other stem cell technologies, iMS cells arent limited in their regenerative abilities and do not carry risks such as tumor development.</li> <li><strong>Patient-specific</strong>: Since iMS cells are derived from the patients own tissue, they significantly reduce the risk of rejection.</li> <li><strong>Wide Adaptation</strong>: iMS cells derived from adult tissue have shown the ability to adapt to a wide range of tissue types in mice, making them a kind of smart stem cell....</li> </ul>

Fadden Live: Who Gets The Swing? "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Summary

Fadden (LNP 10.6%), vacancy for resignation of Stuart Robert

CALLED (7:26 pm) Cameron Caldwell (LNP) retain

Small 2PP swing to LNP (c. 2.5%), slightly above average for contested opposition vacancy

Poor result for Greens, One Nation and obscure independents, strong result for Legalise Cannabis

Live Comments (scrolls to top)

5:40 Minor changes; Democrats now last by four.

4:15 I've added One Nation to the loser list in the summary above even though they have a small primary vote swing to them.  The reason for this is they should have done much better in the absence of the UAP, but seem to have been unable to compete with a Dutton-led LNP (which could spell trouble for Malcolm Roberts' Senate seat in 2025 if Dutton is still leader then).  The UAP and One Nation fish to a large degree in the same pond and this was something that was especially striking in the 2022 results nationwide.  Compared to the 2022 four-candidate-preferred result, One Nation's by-election primary is down 6%, the Greens are down 6.7, Labor are down 2.8 and the LNP are up 1.6.  Some of the votes One Nation has "lost" here will be to Legalise Cannabis and others and will come back to them at the 4CP stage if the Greens manage to make the final four (which is doubtful), but it looks a lot like there has been a swing on the four-candidate vote from One Nation to LNP, which is masked by the UAP not running.   Votes coming from UAP at this stage (not all theirs) split 63.6% to One Nation but only 15.1% to the LNP, so all else being equal One Nation would have a bigger primary swing and LNP a smaller one.

PS Federation Party now last by one vote.

2:40 Another 2000-ish postals added and the swing is now 2.5% while the Federation Party is back in last by 3 votes (Citizens only 14 off last now).

Here is a graph of Opposition swings in Opposition vacancy by-elections relative to their polling (compared to the previous election) at the time.  Fadden comes out as an above-average result for the Coalition by this standard, and similar to the by-elections in Bob Hawke's first term.  Aston by comparison was a shocker.

Robert Bigelow was looking for a second sponsor for the BAASS/AAWSAP "IndyWatch Feed National"

<p style="text-align: center;"><b>Introduction</b></p> <p>Long-term readers of this blog will be aware that most of my blog articles are based on what interests me, rather than what is currently popular on Twitter, YouTube or other social media platforms. Like most UAP researchers and commentators, I have been following with great interest, the David Grusch story and the efforts of the US Congress.</p> <p>However, you can read about these topics on multiple media outlets, including, increasingly, mainstream media. So, I don't feel a need to report them here too. Having said that, I continue to mine small pieces of information, from Jacques Vallee's book <i>"Forbidden Science: Volume 5."</i> Today, I learnt about the involvement of a Canadian engineer in the AAWSAP. I was surprised to learn of his role, as I have never read or heard anything about his work for AAWSAP. A second surprise item was that Bigelow was looking for another sponsor for BAASS/AAWSAP above and beyond the Defense Intelligence Agency. Who was that potential co-sponsor? Budgerigar (1), Little Woodswallow (10) at Barolin Nature Reserve, Mon Repos reported by Simon and Judy Smith on 16-07-2023 "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Birds have been reported recently by other birders, but today (9am) were present at the same location, at a minor creek crossing maybe 650m along the walking track to Mon Repos from the northern end of Davidson St, Bargara. The Budgerigar was actively foraging with Chestnut-breasted Mannikins, and its behaviour did not suggest it was an escaped cage bird.
