Search for robins proves successful "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Winter is well and truly in full swing, but there have been some sunny days that have been perfect for being out and about, although its rather soggy underfoot.

I was fortunate to conduct a winter birds on farms survey in Wallington. I was particularly interested in seeing robins, as these birds move from mountainous areas to warmer coastal areas in the winter months, and they have not been seen in as big numbers over the past few years around the Bellarine.

I did not see any robins until the end of the survey, and in the end, there were eight flame robins hanging around a newly ploughed paddock.

There was also the usual small flock of weebills in the yellow gum habitats. Weebills are tiny birds of around 8cm to 9cm in length and are not commonly seen around the Bellarine Peninsula, so its always lovely to spot them.

There were also a few honeyeater species on the farm, as the yellow gums were flowering. The red wattlebirds and New Holland honeyeaters are always present in the area, in all seasons.

I saw a few yellow-faced honeyeaters, which are migratory and make movements to and from south-eastern Australia, mostly flying north in autumn and south in spring. These birds can be seen in large flocks when migrating and in smaller groups when feeding.

I also spotted a few white-naped honeyeaters that are also partially migratory. This species breeds in mountainous areas in the summer months and in autumn some birds migrate north and east in flocks with yellow-faced honeyeaters.

One day on my way to work I called in to the Geelong Botanic Gardens, also on the lookout for robins.

I didnt see any robins but did spot a small flock of eastern spinebills that are also another honeyeater that has seasonal movements from high altitudes to lower regions in autumn and winter.

There was also a flock of silvereyes in a garden near the Botanic Gardens and these birds looked like the Tasmanian subspecies of these birds, as they had grey throats, chestnut flanks and yellow on the undertail. Silvereyes are also highly migratory and move north in the autumn months, returning to breed in southern regions in late winter.

On the way to the Botanic Gardens I drove through Leopold and had the closest encounter with a pair of brown falcons that I have ever had. They were perched in a tree and I drove past, and then did a safe u-turn and said hello. One of the falcons flew away but the other hung around for a photo and a chat.

I could have reached out and shook its wing, I was so close, and the bird was so lovely.

I received a message from Doug, who was walking early in the morning on the beach in Ocean Grove when he spotted an eastern barn owl sitting on top of a sign pole near the steps to the beach.

There are occasional sightings of barn owls on the Bellarine Peninsula, and its always wonderful to know that they are around.

Trek crosses into familiar territory "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Havent we met somewhere before? sprung to mind on my first encounter with the Subaru Crosstrek, for there is a lot in common here with the companys XV sport utility vehicle.

In fact, says Subaru, the newly named compact is the latest iteration of the popular XV, including two petrol / electric hybrid models, aimed at anyone who wants a versatile, reliable, and stylish small SUV.

Priced from $34,990, the all-wheel drive Crosstrek comes in five variants AWD 2.0L, AWD 2.0R, AWD 2.0S, AWD Hybrid L and AWD Hybrid S offering those with an active lifestyle a versatile, reliable, and stylish small SUV.

However, there is a major point of difference between the Crosstrek and its antecedent. The Crosstrek has benefitted greatly from a visit to the doctor a whole team of medics, in fact. Subaru collaborated with a medical school to study the structure of the human body and what causes driver discomfort, fatigue and lower back pain behind the wheel.

Results found ride comfort is not solely affected by the vibration of the vehicle, but also by sounds and changes in visual information because of jerking and head swaying during driving.

Hence seats have been redesigned to reduce shaking of the head and roof damping has been improved to help reduce sound pressure fluctuations in the cabin.

Meanwhile, vehicle health is in the hands of Subarus standard five-year / unlimited kilometre warranty and 12 months complimentary Subaru Roadside Assistance.

The mid-range Crosstrek AWD 2.0R, selling for $38,490, plus on-road costs, was the test vehicle for a week and confidently took on widely varied road and weather conditions well during that time.

STYLING

Once the domain of predominantly white or silver exteriors, or in this case Subaru blue, these days, subtle shades of colour are taking to streets around the world. Take for example the test Crosstrek with its Magnetite Grey Metallic paint job and dark machine finished 18-inch wheels. Who would have thought dull could look so classy?

While the all-round appearance of the Crosstrek is generally a carry-over from the XV, the bonnet and radiator grille come in for a complete redesign, the latter maintaining the signature hexagonal shape, but in a larger more aggressively styled honeycomb.

Use of lightweight aluminium enables a newly designed bonnet to contribute to improved pedestrian protection with a softer head impact zone and a saving of two kilograms in front fenders optimises weight distribution all round.

LED headlamps, plus cornering lights, improve visibility at night and add to power savings, while LED rear combination lamps feature a sharp 3-D C-shape. Rear-view mirrors are smaller, improving aerodynamics and presenting a less obstructive view.

Q&A with Indigo Aurora on Climate Action "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

Republished from the Bass Coast Post*

On Tuesday, local students took time off school to protest at the NABs financing of the coal industry. The Bass Coast Post asked Indigo Aurora why she attended.

Post: Why did you get involved with School Strike for Climate (SS4C)?

Indigo: I only got properly involved with SS4C this year, but Ive been passionate about fighting for climate justice for years. When I joined Newhaven College at the start of 2023, my amazing friend and activist Joey Thompson introduced me to a local climate action group, and Ive been helping to organise and attend local actions ever since. It makes me feel so empowered to get out there and fight for our environment, alongside other passionate individuals. Although we live rurally, its important that we join this national movement, as we can still achieve great things that will make an impact.

Post: Climate change makes me feel

Indigo: Trapped, like my generations future is hopeless. Its sometimes hard to maintain a positive mental attitude when it feels like the world is slowly crumbling around us.

Post: Do you talk to your friends and family about climate change and climate action?

Indigo: I talk about climate change with my friends and family very frequently, as its on my mind so often. My family are more than supportive of me, and my friends seem to care when I discuss it with them.

Post: Is this your first climate action or have you been involved in direct action before?

Indigo: This is not my first direct action, I have attended over five in total, and helped to organise three.

Post: You should be in class! Whats your response?

Indigo: The SS4C movement is not at all disregarding the importance of our education, its simply asserting that it is so crucial to fight for our dying climate, that we will sacrifice an important part of our lives for it. Students and young people often get treated like we have no power, so we use one of the only things we do have the ability to strike from school and disrupt the daily order of things, to force the government and other people in power to take the climate crisis seriously.

Post: Do you expect the June 20 rally to influence the banks? Or do you see other benefits to the rally?

Indigo: Of course our main goal is to influence th...

005 Artificial Intelligence, Thought and Thinking "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

This episode is on Cartesian Theatre, Socrates Elenchus, GAN and tokens, alcohol and the Divine Masculine. Bit of a ramble really.

How artificial intelligence And human intelligence converge. Or do not. I wanted to start to tackle artificial intelligence, thought and thinking. We humans are not convinced we understand how we think and have spent philosophical lifetimes debating and cogitating. (Rene Descartes Cogito ergo sum, or Dennetts draft mode or quantum consciousness?)
While AI may one day move from a sequential process to a concurrent one, the Divine Masculine will lurch toward a prompt-output approach while the Divine Feminine swims in deep waters. Both exist, both can be right.
GAN (adversarial networks) are similar to Socrates Elenchus only by debating what we know and understand do we truly KNOW. The GAN approach will try and fool the AI into thinking the image is not AI generated. It will build muscle by going back to the drawing board and trying again. A Pros and Cons list.
Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, Camus and Baudelaire, Aldous Huxley, Carlos Castaneda and others took the view that Bacchanalia, Dionysian that alcohol can clarify thinking. Or at least mean a good time while philosophising!

Scarlet Robins establishing territories "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

Birds were scarce during a visit to the Rise and Shine mid-week.

Spotted Pardalotes, Weebills and White-naped Honeyeaters could be heard calling, along with a pair of Scarlet Robins  sweet notes piercing the cool air.

At this time of year they are establishing territories, so if you find a pair in late winter there is a fair chance theyll remain in the same area to breed as soon as the spring warmth arrives.

Scarlet Robins are mostly perch and pounce foragers, often alighting sideways on a tree trunk as they scan the woodland floor for insects. Their calls can vary in volume, in this case the male was singing softly, uttering an occasional single note contact call between snatches of song.

Commonwealth Bank: Shifting goalposts and shutting doors

Banks are closing, despite an assurance given to the Senate Inquiry by the Commonwealth Bank that it would not close regional branches until the Inquiry concludes at the end of the year. Dale Webster reports.

THE COMMONWEALTH BANK is at it again.

While to be congratulated on its decision to put a three-year moratorium on regional branch closures in place, the Commonwealth Bank has dragged its co-publisher of the quarterly Regional Movers Index report into an embarrassing situation again by refusing to count its top destinations for regional migration as regional.

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) uses Commonwealth Bank data to compile the report, which has listed the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Geelong as some of its most popular destinations for people choosing to leave city life behind in preference for a regional location.

But the Commonwealth Bank confirmed that when it comes to branch closures, it is choosing to follow a Bureau of Statistics classification that conflicts with the classification it uses with the RAI in the Regional Movers Index.

The decision leaves Australias three biggest regional cities Geelong, Wollongong and Newcastle as well as the Gold and Sunshine coasts and places such as Bateau Bay, Gosford, Maitland, Murwillumbah, Raymond Terrace, Katoomba, Bacchus Marsh and Mandurah, still vulnerable to the loss of their Commonwealth banks until 2026.

They are among 490 branches the Commonwealth Bank could choose to close at any time (see map below)

Funding helps marine care group "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Queenscliffs Southern Ocean Environmental Link (SOEL) will share more than $350,000 in state government funding from the Coastcare Community Grants Program.

SOEL founder James (Murph) Murphy said it was fantastic to receive the funding for a Marine Coastal Citizen Science Program and Plastic Recycling Workshop.

Were really excited to be able to offer this, he said.

Were looking to bring people into the environment to showcase the world of volunteering through the amazing biodiversity and the impacts that our regions are facing.

Its a big thanks to Coastcare for backing us because its confirmation for us that were on the right track and the work weve been doing is absolutely worth it.

Mr Murphy said the coastal citizen program looked to engage the young, disadvantaged, indigenous, elderly and local groups to get them interested in volunteering.

They are going to get the opportunity to go through, collect, sort, and learn about the different types of plastics, he said.

The volunteers will also learn how plastics can be recycled and then turn some of the waste collected here in the Bellarine back into usable products.

Mr Murphy said the group was always looking for more volunteers to look after the surrounding oceans marine health and encouraged anyone interested in helping to reach out to SOEL.

Were all in this together, he said.

Ive been incredibly proud of the team and really pleased with where its going, I think were on step four of a massive staircase.

The goal is to help improve the health of our ocean, and I think if we can come and put our minds together, then theres a good shot of leaving the place better for our kids.

POW highlights threat to climate data "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

Anyone who is paying attention to the state of our winters knows that they are getting more erratic. Often they start later (its now a rare thing to ski on natural snow on opening weekend) and winter snow is subject to more rain events, with big impacts on snow pack. While our climatic patterns go through natural wetter and drier cycles, climate science tells us that these patterns will become more extreme, with less overall snow and shorter seasons over time.

While all resorts track snowfall, the benchmark of snowfall in Australia over time comes from Spencers Creek, at a site at 1,800 metres above sea level, in the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains.

The area is midway between Perisher Valley and Thredbo, and has been visited by weather observers every week during winter since the mid-1950s, when the Snowy Hydro scheme was being constructed. The information collected by Snowy Hydro provides our best snapshot of snow pack over time. Sadly the data shows that snowpack has been in decline since 1957.

Now Protect our Winters (POW) has discovered that the frequency of data collection at Spencers Creek has decreased in recent years.

They say:

Data collected in 2022 was sparse in comparison to previous years, with only four records collected from 1st of May to 31st of July. This is a reduction of over 60% compared to the average of the previous decade (2012-2021).

Snowy Hydro explained their reduction in data collection in 2021 as a means to avoid sending staff to remote locations in poor weather conditions.

However, this poses a pressing challenge. Snowy Hydros data is the longest running and most consistent, and without it, tracking and comparing the impact of climate change on our winters becomes increasingly difficult.

Small Business Fest inspires "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Every year I am inspired by the people I meet and speak to at the Geelong Small Business Festival.

This wonderful event is now in its 13th year, and it has served as a great reminder of the amazing work being done in our community by people who are often competing with major corporate organisations and larger entities.

This year the City of Greater Geelong has announced a new partnership with the Geelong Chamber of Commerce for the Geelong Small Business Festival.

The partnership will see the Chamber take the lead in delivering the event which runs throughout all of August and will help support the continued growth and evolution of the festival.

This years program has more than 70 low-cost and free events on offer for community members looking to start, grow or improve their small business.

The local small business community makes up around 97 per cent of all businesses in the region.

Whether you are coming from a place of experience or are in the early stages of developing your business, the festival offers plenty of valuable opportunities to hear from industry experts, make new connections and learn new skills.

It covers every stage of the small business world for existing business owners, budding entrepreneurs or those unsure about how to get started.

You can learn business essentials such as accounting and finance, and leading and managing your team.

Modern principles of health and wellbeing, social media marketing, digital technology, and sustainability and social responsibility are also covered.

The Geelong Small Business Festival will be launched at a special Gala Dinner sponsored by The Gordon on Thursday 3 August at GMHBA Stadium.

Those interested in attending this dinner, or any of the workshops, presentations and networking opportunities designed to support and empower small businesses throughout the month-long festival, can visit www.gsbf.com.au.

I encourage you all to get along and see why this is such a popular event among our local business community.

Its always a great feeling to win a premiership, and to do it with these boys is special, captain Lachy Edgar said.

They threw it at us tonight, and we knew that we had to bring our best.

In Section 2, All Saints came to Grovedale having just lost in the last regular season round to Groveys Bogsy and the New Blokes. They were not to be denied, winning 5-1 31-20.

All Saints started off the match on the right note, with number one player Riley Warren and captain Zane Garbellini winning the first doubles rubber 6-0. They followed by winning all three singles sets in close matches, proving the difference.

St Marys Table 29 Tennis Association finished top of the ladder and came into a home grand final against Hightons Out of Towners. The teams split the two season matches, and the decider turned out to be worthy of a grand final.

The teams split the first two sets, but Highton asserted themselves winning the third and fourth sets 6-2 6-4 to go up 3-1 and by eight games. Needing to win

the last two sets convincingly, St Marys captain Thomas Crosbie won 6-1 in singles to give his team a chance.

However, it was not meant to be as Hightons Corey Hird and Guillermo Andy won 6-3 in the last doubles to seal a 4-2 30-24 victory.

Grovedales Hall of Framers were looking for their first ever flag, getting a home grand final against the Highton Flyers in Section 4. The first two sets looked like the match would be a battle, with a 6-5 doubles result going to Highton and a 6-3 singles going to Grovedale.

Grovedale took command with a 6-0 doubles set going the way of Rodney Driessen and captain Jeff Andrews.

Grovedales Jay Jackson also won 6-4 in singles, setting up a commanding lead going into the last two sets. The last two sets were split 6-5 for each team, with Grovedale walking away a 4-2 34-24 winner on the night.

Jez says no to gambling "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Geelong Cats star and new dad Jeremy Cameron this week reaffirmed his commitment as an ambassador for the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundations Love the Game program.

As part of the program, Bellarine Peninsula residents are encouraged to participate in a challenge to show they love the game, not the odds by finding ways to talk about sport without referring to the betting odds and starting a conversation about the risks associated with gambling.

Fatherhood has given me an even greater awareness of the importance of ensuring children grow up in safe, positive environments, Cameron said.

Gambling ads are everywhere these days and Im concerned about the message theyre sending to young people about the value of playing and watching sport.

I have never considered the odds of winning a match or how my performance might be pivotal to the outcome of a multi, and I dont want my daughter to grow up in an environment where betting on sport is accepted as normal.

More than 700 clubs, including Ocean Grove, Ocean Grove Cobras and Barwon Heads, are Love the Game partners, including Victorias 10 AFL clubs.

They reject sponsorships from gambling providers, raise community awareness about the risks associated with gambling and teach kids to think critically about their choices.

Im fortunate to be part of such a family friendly club where teaching kids to love the game, not the odds, is a priority, Cameron said.

Im also proud Geelong says no to gambling sponsorships and that there are no sports betting ads at the Cattery during home games.

Anyone negatively affected by their own or someone elses gambling can access free and confidential advice, support and referral by calling the 24/7 Gamblers Help line on 1800 858 858.

Fadden uncovers LNP plans for Queensland crime forum

Queenslands largest legal organised crime syndicate, the Liberal National Party, heads to the mattresses this Saturday to defend its territory in Fadden. Darren Crawford reports on the LNP's latest plans to further normalise political corruption.

Let's take a deep dive into what some of the candidates had to say and have a look at just what is really in play in what should be a soft win for the next man up.

The next man up

I arrive at the Paradise Point Community Centre just ahead of time and line up with the rest of the oldies.

A bloke in a wheelchair rolls up and starts telling the bloke in front of me that gubberment overreach is killin Straylia. He offers me a pamphlet, which I decline. Vis By-election will cost us $150,000, he says, they should refund that money. He doesnt say who they are nor does he say who the money should be given to. If this cooker reflects what is happening inside, I decide, this is going to get interesting.

Once inside, I hide up the back and I can see that the crowd of about 100 people is mostly Liberal National Party of Queensland (LNP) blue, with a smattering of Australian Labor Party (ALP) fans, Pauline Hanson's One Nation supporters (PHON) and a handful of cookers, like old mate outside. There are plenty of franking credits to be found in here, and regardless of colour, LNP candidate, and current local City of Gold Coast Councillor for this area (Division 4), Cameron Caldwell is their man.

Bridge leads club to better times "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Ocean Grove Golf Club has a new bridge making it easier for golfers to travel around the course thanks to funding from the state government.

The bridge at the seaside club replaced the original old wooden decking with secure concrete and was unveiled on Wednesday morning, July 12.

Club president Sandy Cresswell said the new bridge links the middle fairways and makes it easier for people of all abilities to access both sites of the course.

Its been six years in the making, he said.

It will also enable a greater use of carts going forwards too.

Mr Cresswell said it felt sensational to have the bridge ready to use and thanked everyone for coming to its opening ceremony.

It was a reasonable turnout and there was probably close to 30 people there, he said.

The engineering has exceeded all the limitations and the bridge will be there for 100 plus years that we believe the golf course will be in existence.

Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said the bridge was made possible through the $38,000 state governments Golf Infrastructure Fund and would help more people get involved in the sport.

Victorians love their golf, and we want them to keep enjoying the sport and thats why projects like this are so important, she said.

Were building the sporting facilities our communities deserve, so everyone has the opportunity to get out there and get active.

Ocean Grove Golf Club is one of 18 golf infrastructure projects to receive funding support, with golf generating $883 million for the states economy and supporting 6900 jobs.

Birth trauma awareness event coming to Lennox "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Birth Trauma Awareness Event coming to Lennox Head.

Over 450 Northern Rivers locals are coming together next week to support the conversation and raise awareness around perinatal trauma, with a free event at Lennox Head Cultural Centre on Tuesday 18 July at 10am.

During Birth Trauma Awareness week (running 16-22 July) national charity Hygieia Health Ltd has partnered with the local Lismore hospital team and birth community experts from all over Australia to create a community event designed to raise awareness about birth trauma, and importantly, discuss ways to prevent it.

Birth trauma is gaining a lot of focus at the moment with the NSW state-wide enquiry being established on 21 June 2023 (chaired by the Hon. Emma Hurst). Registrations to this event filled in record time, attesting to the seriousness of the issue, enabling those involved to strive for better care, better practices and better birth experiences for all birthing women.

The three hour live event at Lennox Head Cultural Centre on Tuesday has been pulled together in collaboration with Dr Tane Luna, Head of Obstetrics at Lismore Base Hospital, who is dedicated to supporting staff and birthing families to have positive birth experiences.

Incredible opportunity

The event will be focused on compassion, self-awareness, prevention and treatment of birth-related and perinatal trauma. This is a great opportunity for the community to gather together to share their stories, support birthing families who have experienced perinatal trauma, and raise awareness about the issues and the effect birth trauma has on mothers, babies and the wider community.

Participants will look at what needs to be done in the Northern NSW Health District, and beyond, to prevent birth-related trauma.

Looking at Tweed coast and estuaries "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Cudgen Creek at Kingscliff. Photo supplied.

In their latest quest to find out what the community wants for the Tweed Shire, Council is seeking feedback to help inform the development of a new coastal management program to help preserve and protect the much-loved Tweed Coast and its estuaries.

A Tweed Coast and Estuaries Coastal Management Program will be progressed over the next 18 months, based on research and consultation with experts, stakeholders and community members.

The challenges faced by coast and estuaries

The management program aims to address the challenges faced by our coast and estuaries and will outline a framework to guide actions to help preserve the area for generations to come.

Councils Manager Sustainability and Environment Jane Lofthouse said coastal management was the planned, strategic management of coastal areas which takes into account social, economic and ecological systems and values.

We are at the early stages of developing a Coastal Management Program (CMP) for the Tweed Coast and estuaries, said Ms Lofthouse. This means we are building our understanding of what our community loves about the coast, what they would change and their ideas for the future.

In 2019, a scoping study was undertaken and was the first of five stages in the CMP process. The scoping study reviewed the history of managing...

Wildlife hospital in financial tailspin "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

A couple of native marsupials get some care at the Byron Wildlife Hospital. Image supplied

The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital (BBWH) faces possible closure, after a NSW government panel recently deemed the facility did not demonstrate value for money in its funding application.

The rejection was supported by NSW Environment Minister, Penny Sharpe (Labor), with her office telling The Echo the decision was at arms length from the panel.

This is despite BBWHs proven expertise and experience in providing veterinary and rehabilitation services for native animals in the region, something that was also acknowledged by the government in its rejection letter to BBWH founder and CEO, Dr Stephen Van Mil.

Dr Van Mil said in a statement, We are extremely disappointed and surprised at the announcement, but native animals are the biggest losers in this decision.

Since operations began in January 2021, the hospital says over 4,000 animals have been treated, and over 1,000 in 2023 so far.

A BBWH spokesperson said, On February 6, 2023, the then NSW coalition government announced it had reserved funding of $6 million over four years for BBWH to continue its vital work.

At the time, Northern Rivers-based MLC, Ben Franklin (Nationals), said he believed it was nation-leading, and an exemplar of what can be done across the country.

A BBWH spokesperson said, In January 2023, the NSW Governments Expenditure Review Committee approved funding to be reserved for BBWH, based on a strategic business case.

Single-member council wards rolling out in Victoria "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Victoria is continuing the process of reviewing its local council wards, and since my last update in May, we have started to see proposed ward boundaries for those councils that are being forced to switch to single-member wards following legislative change in 2020 which mandated single-member wards for most urban councils and some regional cities.

Unsurprisingly, some of these single-member wards look completely ridiculous.

Some of these wards cover tiny areas, and the VEC has unsurprisingly had difficulty drawing wards of similar sizes, which will probably force more frequent redistributions over time. For some regional cities, maps have been proposed that involve wedges that dont represent any real community of interest within the council area.

In theory, the review process is meant to provide multiple options, but for the second wave of councils, every option involves single member wards. The independent process doesnt give participants any real choice.

For the first wave, 12 regional councils were reviewed. For each council, an option of electing all councillors at large was proposed, along with a model with 2-4 wards electing 2-4 councillors each, with all wards electing the same number of councils. In some of the councils, a single-member ward structure was also proposed. That review process has concluded, and the final report has been submitted to the Minister, but we dont know which options were chosen.

The second wave involves 16 councils, with the proposed ward boundaries being released for four councils a week over a four-week period. The first twelve are now out, with the last four due out next week.

In theory, theres some choice about which model is chosen. Seven of these councils have three different ward maps proposed. Four others have two options. For some reason Yarra only has a single ward map.

The council wards are meant to fall within 10% of the average enrolment per ward, but thats not much of a range when youre drawing such a small ward.

Unsurprisingly, in small councils you need to draw quite small wards. Most of the councils in the second wave have been regional cities, but proposed wards have been published for the Melbourne councils of Yarra and Frankston. The Yarra map is a glaring example of the absurdity of the system.

Ocean Grove is one of a kind "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Guest columnist Paul Gleeson moved to Ocean Grove 25 years ago and every day he is thankful for it. Read on to see why Paul thinks this place is so special.

Ocean Grove is a rare family find.

Im not trying to take anything away from its closest neighbours, such as the sea change of Barwon Heads or the acreage of Wallington. Both are fine if you have the cash. However, after living here for the last 25 years, OG has provided me with an exorbitant amount of good times. Way back,

American Methodists predicted the same.

In the 1880s, the Methodists, having already successfully set up a camp in New Jersey and calling it Ocean Grove, wanted to take the Lord abroad.

They found a charming seaside resort, on the eastern side of the Barwon River mouth along the Bellarine Peninsula. Here, they secured 222 hectares at 5 to 20 per lot, with a steadfast proviso and a ban on, the Manufacture or Sale of Malted Spirituous or in local lingo, no brew with your burger. This went on for, surprisingly, 140 years.

Traders tried to gain a liquor licence, but they lost the Supreme Court battles. Finally, the Victorian Civil Administration Tribunal intervened in 2014, and it was quashed.

I knew nothing of this when, in the winter of 1998, we decided to move here. To be honest, Ocean Grove was an easy pick with an affordable beach lifestyle. Even back then, $91,000 seemed like Id missed somethingthis is for the land and the house, right?

My friends and family werent sold though because this entailed leaving behind my childhood roots, the leafy Geelong suburb of Highton, and a long haul to work that would now be over 30 minutes. But off we went, buying and renovating a three-bedroom house. Within five months, the renovations were over, and it was summertime.

Ocean Grove beach has the perfect waves for learning how to surf. When the winds are northerly its a squeal fest. Theres freedom in failing and falling off the waves.

Dont worry, theres no judgement here, as the surfers that are all about the performance are around the corner at the Titanic 13th Beach.

Before, or preferably after the beach, the main street is a must. Recently, I overheard a young couple saying it had vibes. On the main street, youll walk past wetsuits, suits, beanies, bell-bottom jeans, and of course dripping boardies. All shopping needs are catered for, with eateries and coffee shops galore. See for yourself as you meander down one way and back up the other, or cruise through in your car.

Just dont enter the traffic from Orton Street (I saw a guy in a Chevy do this, that day his antics morphed locals into seagulls, and they jumped out as if in a musical, flapping in front of his rig).

As mentioned I have so many of my own Ocean Grove beach memories, heres one of them.

My son, who was eight at the time, went out on his G Board with me as his surfing sherpa in mid-Janua...

UK progressive metal masters TesseracT announce 2024 Australian tour "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Tuesday, May 7: Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide Lic AA
Thursday, May 9: Magnet House, Perth 18+

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Five years since the release of Sonder, TesseracT return with their new album War Of Being, released on September 15 via Kscope, showcasing perfectly why they remain pioneering leaders of the ever-evolving metal scene.

Drawing upon their previous albums strengths, War Of Being seamlessly combines the aggressive intensity of their debut masterpiece, One, the intricate song structures of Altered State, the songwriting prowess of Polaris, and the mind-boggling technicality of Sonder. The result is destined to be whispered about in hallowed progressive circles for years to come. It sets an impossibly high benchmark that few will ever surpass.

A concept album with AI generated cover art, War Of Being tells the gripping tale of ex and el, two souls stranded in The Strangeland after a catastrophic shipwreck. Here, they encounter a mysterious entity known as Fear, sparking a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. As you embark on your own individual journey through the album, prepare to unlock the deepest recesses of your own being.

War Of Being has been all encompassing for us since late 2019.  After I returned home  from filming P O R T A L S I found myself in such a deeply introspective headspace. The scale of work and reward from that project kind of set this up to be inevitable, says TesseracT bassist Amos Williams.

We simply had to try and see how far we could take a concept album with TesseracT.  Within these songs the band has given life to the themes and ideas that are personified within the characters of The Strangeland story. Its certainly been a catharsis and a way for me to explore the internal dissonance.

TesseracT stand firmly at the vanguard of the progressive movement that they themselves help shape. Their signature polyrhythmic grooves continue to push boundaries...

Grove home in one-goal thriller "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Ocean Grove held on for a thrilling one-goal win against fierce rivals Barwon Heads in round 13 on Saturday July 8.

The win kept Ocean Grove in second spot on the ladder while the loss saw Barwon Heads slip out of the top five, albeit only by a small amount of percentage.

The Grubbers jumped out to a seven-goal lead at quarter time and increased that by one at the half.

The Seagulls then launched a serious comeback with a 13 goal to eight third term to cut the deficit back to three, but Ocean Grove held on in the dying stages to run out 45 to 44 winners.

I think we just lost our way a little bit in the second half, we just werent playing our game, co-coach Candice Parker said.

We probably got sucked in a little bit to their style of game that they were playing and that ultimately cost us errors during the game.

While we did have plenty of turnovers, we just werent converting off those turnovers either.

Captain Emily Moroney was best at wing attack while Gemma Bell relished her promotion to A Grade with a fine game in defence. Goal attack Ashton OBrien was also a standout player.

Shes (Bell) been playing really well in B Grade so weve given her a couple of opportunities to come up and help out in A and she did a really good job and started a bit of drive coming out of defence, Parker said.

The Grubbers have been slow starters this season before eventually overpowering most opponents in the second half, but last Saturday was the opposite.

Weve been trying some combinations so while it might look like were not having great starts, that just might be the combinations were putting out there and making sure everyone gets experience on the court within the starting line up, Parker said.

But then also coming off the bench and starting too, so just trying to get experience into people and seeing how they respond.

Were a pretty versatile team so just trying to work out the best combinations is tricky as well.

Ocean Grove faces a tough run home before the finals starting with Torquay (3rd) tomorrow, then Geelong Amateur (1st), Modewarre (10th), Anglesea (5th) and Queenscliff (4th).

Youre going to have to play these teams in the finals so to be playing them in the lead up, if youre not winning you can then go back to the drawing board and go well do we need to do to improve to make sure we beat them in the finals, Parker said.

ROUND 13

A Grade: Ocean Grove 45 def Barwon Heads 44. Best: Emily Moroney, Ashton OBrien, Gemma Bell.

B Grade: Ocean Grove 52 def Barwon Heads 27. Best: Amelia Cunningham, Shelby Hackett, Dannie Hoiles.

Treeline rising in the alpine zones due to climate change "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

If you are a regular reader of Mountain Journal, you will know that I bang on endlessly about climate change impacts on the mountains: more intense fire regimes impacting snow gums and alpine ash forests, declining snow pack, longer droughts and all the rest of it. I probably dont spend enough time looking at what is happening in the true alpine zones above the tree line.

New research from Griffith University researchers outlines how alpine habitat is responding to climate change and bushfires.

Griffith Environmental Futures Institute Research Fellow Dr Brodie Verrall said the alpine area in the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains was mapped to observe and analyse the changes resulting from the warming climate between 1990 to 2000, 2010, and 2020.

Ultimately, warmer temperatures, longer growing seasons, declining snow cover and variable precipitation regimes have resulted in the rapid expansion of the woody vegetation, Dr Verrall said.

A key finding is that shrublines are advancing upslope. This indicates that new climatic habitat is becoming available with climate change and this is the first documented example of this phenomenon in the southern hemisphere. It means that, over time, we are losing the true alpine zone above the treeline where woody vegetation like trees and shrubs dominate.

This process may lead to the decline of relatively diverse alpine grasslands that currently occupy higher elevation areas.

The study found a slight treeline recession as a response to wildfire, which stunts the expansion of subalpine woodland cover and suppresses the upslope advancement of shrublines.

Wildfire may play an important role in regulating the encroachment of woody vegetation into alpine areas in the future, which would be an entirely new ecological process for this unique area

As Brodie notes: The changes are likely to have broad ranging consequences for fire risk management, carbon sequestration, water supply and biodiversity.

It was assumed subalpine vegetation would expand upwards into cooler alpine areas as the temperature rises but our data showed the snow gums expanded within the subalpine into the once treeless patches of the subalpine heathlands after the 2003 fires.

It is extremely important to understand what is happening in these alpine areas so we can prepare and predict how the warming climate and associated bushfires will impact these unique ecosystems in the future.

The good news:

A key surprising discovery is that subalpine woodlands are more resilient to bushfires than previously thought and they are expanding, however the results also showed this is increasing the amount of biomass which could exacerbate future fires.

The not so good news:

We found the cover of woody vegetation is increasing in the alpine, and we know th...

Nuclear power too expensive and slow to be part of Australias plans to reach net zero, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Guardian, Lisa Cox 12 July 23

Nuclear power should not form part of Australias plans to reach net zero emissions because it is too expensive and slow, according to the final report of a project that models how Australia might meet its 2050 climate target.

The Net Zero Australia report, a partnership between major academic institutions and the management consultancy Nous Group, says the federal government has a major role to play in accelerating all options that could make a material contribution to achieving net zero.

The release of the report comes days after the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, ramped up calls for nuclear power in Australia and a debate about removing the legislative ban on nuclear power in Australia.

The report includes major investment in batteries, solar, onshore wind, pumped hydro and transmission. Among renewable options, offshore wind was found to have the most uncertain pipeline, with the report concluding first power from offshore wind projects needed to occur in 2030.

But the report concludes nuclear power should not be factored in to net zero plans and states that to reduce renewable targets in the belief that nuclear will be deployed later at scale would create a material risk of not achieving net zero, or doing so at an excessive cost.

Richard Bolt, principal at Nous Group, said: Nuclear power should not be in our plans, because its too expensive and slow. .

The report was produced by the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland, Princeton Universitys Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, as well as Nous Group https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/jul/11/nuclear-power-too-expensive-and-slow-to-be-part-of-australias-plans-to-reach-net-zero-study-finds

Borrow, play, return "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Ocean Grove Primary School Year 6 student Sadie Dallman has started up a dog toy library in her home town.

The library, at Blue Waters Lake park in Ocean Grove, is stocked with toys that pooches can play with and are returned so that other canines have fun.

The idea came about through 11-year-old Sadies Rotary Community Project and the toys, such as balls, tug toys, frisbees and throw sticks, were donated by Petstock Ocean Grove.

The mantra of the dog toy library is Borrow, play, return.

I came up with this idea because as a dog owner myself I know the struggles of forgetting to bring a toy or ball to the park, Sadie said.

My dog Goldie always wants to play ball, now we can go there anytime and she loves it. This library is full of fun toys that both you and your dog can play with together.

Id seen one down at the beach and I know that lots of dog owners come down to Blue Waters Park.

The dog toy library has had a fantastic response with locals flooding social media with compliments for the resourceful youngster.

I did not expect that, I thought Id put it up on Facebook and then it would just be up there for people to see, Sadie said.

I saw a girl go grab a toy and play with it with her dog and the the toys have been used, theres a bit of mud on them and stuff

It makes me feel really good because its quite hidden away so its good that people have noticed it.

Even Goldie gets to play with the toys.

Weve taken her there basically every day and she knows where were going and shes very excited about it, Sadie said.

Queenscliff fire sparks investigation "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Police are appealing for information about a suspicious fire at a historic Queenscliff shed.

Victoria Police said they were investigating after a fire started in Queenscliff on Friday, July 7.

Investigators believe that a historic shed on Queenscliff Pier caught fire sometime after midnight, a spokesperson told the Voice.

No one was inside at the time, and the shed received minor damage. At this stage, the fire is being treated as suspicious.

Parks Victoria acting regional director Jodi Heath said the damage had occurred at the historic Waiting Shed on the Queenscliff Pier.

Weve been very disappointed to find vandalism damage to the historic Waiting Shed and Queenscliff Pier twice in the last three weeks and have reported the incidents to the police, she said.

Some decking boards have been burnt, sections of seating removed, holes kicked in timber lining of the Waiting Shed, and some smaller damage to the gate.

We estimate the cost of repair will be around $10,000. Wed really appreciate the local community staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious behaviour around the pier to the police.

A concerned local, who did not want their name published, said they hoped those responsible for the damage would eventually be named and shamed.

It should be called vandalism as that is what it is, they said.

The shed had some of its cladding removed and ripped up, and saw the destruction and removal of its seating, with a fair amount thrown off into the bay.

They also said the alleged vandalism had spread from Queenscliff to Point Lonsdale and that they were concerned about the regions safety.

Why dont the authorities put some form of security out at the sites of heritage buildings, they said.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dash cam footage of the Queenscliff fire is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Crown to pay $450 million after Federal Court ruling "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Two casino centred businesses will have to come up with a collective total of $450 million  in penalty payments over two years after AUSTRAC launched civil penalty proceedings against them for breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act).

The Court also ordered Crown to pay AUSTRACs costs.

Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth (Crown) have been ordered to pay up by the Federal Court of Australia.

The order comes after Crown and AUSTRAC (the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) filed joint submissions with the Federal Court of Australia in May 2023 for the payment of $450 million in instalments over two years.

Detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse

AUSTRAC is the Australian Government agency responsible for detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse of the financial system to protect the community from serious and organised crime.

Through regulation, and enhanced intelligence capabilities, AUSTRAC collects and analyses financial reports and information to generate financial intelligence.

As part of the settlement, Crown admitted that it operated in contravention of the AML/CTF Act, including that Crown Melbourne and Crown Perths AML/CTF programs were not based on appropriate risk assessments, did not have appropriate systems and controls to manage their risks, and were not subject to appropriate oversight by their Boards and senior management.

The serious nature of the breaches

The serious nature of the breaches meant that Crown allowed high-risk activities to take place in its casinos, without intervention, on an ongoing basis. For example:

  • Crown continued a business relationship with a major casino junket operator until 2021, although being aware of allegations the operator was connected to organised crime.
  • Crown failed to appropriately monitor billions of dollars in transactions (including international payment flows) which impacted its ability to identify and disrupt possible suspicious activity, and to report suspicious matters to AUSTRAC and law enforcement.
  • From March 2016 to December 2018, there were at least 75 suspicious incidents involving a total of around $23 million in cash, in a private gaming room which Crown Melbourne gave one casino junket operator exclusive access to.

Substantial and ongoing efforts

However, in settling these proceedings, AUSTRAC took into account the substantial and ongoing efforts undertaken by Crown to address the AML/CTF failings which were the subject of these proceedings.

Acting AUSTRAC CEO Peter Soros noted that AUSTRAC continues to work collaboratively with Crown. Our regulated businesses are supporting them in meeting their obligations to ensure they are equipped to help to protect Australias financial system fr...

Women in small business supported by $185,310 grant "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

The NSW Farmers Association Government has been awarded $185,310 to support a program empowering women in the Lismore electorate to start and run successful small businesses through the Women in Business Networks (WIBN) grant.

This funding, granted by the NSW Government, will support the Empowering Women in Farming Businesses program to host up to 10 events across regional NSW to provide support to regional, rural and remote women in businesses.

The valuable contribution of women to agriculture

The program recognises the valuable contribution of women to the agriculture sector and aims to provide focused networking and skill development opportunities to further develop their confidence and support systems.

Other communities set to benefit from this project include Armidale, Lake Macquarie, Upper Hunter, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Newcastle, Central Coast, Eurobodalla, Orange, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga.

Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin MP said the WIBN grant would provide more economic opportunities to enterprising women in the Northern Rivers region.

Delivering more opportunities

Women make an outstanding contribution to the Lismore community and we are backing the NSW Farmers Association to deliver more opportunities for women to advance their agriculture business prospects.

More women in business means more innovation, new ideas and greater employment opportunities for people in the Lismore region.

The Minns Government is committed to closing the gender pay gap in New South Wales and this will only be possible if we have more women leading and owning businesses across this state, she said.

Despite the prevalence of small businesses in New South Wales, only one-third of these businesses are owned by women. The WIBN grant bolsters the NSW Governments commitment to support women in small business and entrepreneurs, as outlined in the 2022-23 Womens Opportunity Statement.

Making connections

Blister pack recycling pilot begins "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

A new pilot program to recycle medical blister packs kicks off today at pharmacies around the Geelong area.

Spearheaded by Rotary in partnership with Australian company Pharmacycle and local pharmacists, the pilot will place bins in 10 pharmacies in Geelong, Portarlington, Ocean Grove and elsewhere around the region.

Each pharmacy has received six bins, which are available for the public to drop in used blister packs.

Rotary district chair of environment and pharmacist Barb Sheehan, who conceived the idea for the program and has seen it come to fruition, said she was hopeful the community would get behind the initiative.

Im thrilled, absolutely thrilled; the pharmacies have all been really keen to participate and hopefully the public are really enthusiastic and will get plenty of packs back, she said.

The waste (from blister packs) is enormous, I know how much of it goes out from the pharmacies I work in, let alone whats sold in supermarkets and health food stores, and at the moment it all goes to landfill.

Its a big issue (but) theres a solution. There are people who want to recycle them but its the funding, whos going to pay for it, thats the issue, so hopefully well get enough data that we can seek further funding.

The pilot program is being funded by the City of Greater Geelong through a $10,000 environmental sustainability grant.

Id like to thank the City of Greater Geelong for supporting programs like this with their grants, Ms Sheehan said.

I think its wonderful. Its all about stopping plastic pollution going into landfill, getting something out of the plastic and foil that can contribute to a circular economy and make it a better place for us all to live.

In her work at the Byron Youth Service (BYS), youth worker, Deb Pearse, began to notice that many young people are really concerned about the plight of the environment and its wildlife.

The Young and Wild project

Ms Pearse told The Echo the girls groups at the BYS Cottage in Mullumbimby started having conversations, and began a process of creating images; and the Young and Wild project began.

Each participant picked a wild creature that they were interested in, and we began drawing each week, Ms Pearse says. I was amazed to see the work the girls did, and when I showed my manager, Christian Tancred, and other people, they were amazed too.

Global Ripple

The next step was working out how to get the images seen in the community, and after a meeting with Jacqui from Global Ripple, she agreed to place two large murals at the shop, one insi...

A  deeper look into the incredible story of brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate, and the likelihood of powerful foreign actors applying pressure on Romania to keep them on ice.

In this episode of the Patrick Henningsen Show on TNT Radio which aired on July 10, 2023, Patrick talks with UK-based investigative journalist and judicial pundit, Sulaiman Ahmed, for a deeper look into the incredible story of Andrew and Tristan Tate, and their controversial legal case currently making its way, albeit painfully, through the Romanian judicial system. Are there powerful foreign actors applying pressure on Romania to keep the Tates on ice? Is there a political, or geopolitical dimension to this case? The case also draws some eery comparisons to specious sex charges levelled against Julian Assange and others. All this and more. Listen:

"IndyWatch Feed Vic" "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Smith and Co. Foods began as a passion project in Melbourne whilst owner Camilla was still working in the media industry. She noticed that there were no delicious, healthy options for corporate lunches and private catering in her area and so she began cooking for friends and family from her small apartment.

When life took a turn and her boyfriend said they were moving to regional Victoria for work, she decided to give Smith and Co. Foods a red hot go. What started as small food deliveries, soon turned into weddings and private events. Overnight, Smith and Co. Foods went from a one-woman business to a flourishing company with a strong team catering events for up to 1400 people and counting.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

In April 2023, Smith and Co. Foods took a leap of faith and moved to Mercer St in Geelong. Moving just felt right for Camilla; with her incredibly talented and amazing chefs based in Geelong and a noticeable rise in a younger demographic heading to the area. And with that brings a new clientele who want beautiful canapes and events with a Melbourne feel but in a regional city the best of both worlds.

Cricket teams tour lives on in memorial museum "IndyWatch Feed Sydney"

IN 1868, the first team of Australian Aboriginal cricketers toured England. Then 120 years later another Aboriginal team followed in their footsteps. The story of these two teams is now on display at a special museum in Edenhope, Victoria.

The story began on November 2, 1967, when a group of Indigenous men from Western Victoria gathered on the Queenscliff shoreline under the cover of darkness to go fishing.

Their real objective, however, was not to fish, but to avoid the Victorian Aboriginal Protection Board.

The men successfully boarded the steamship Rangatira for passage to Sydney, and eventually landed in the United Kingdom. They were the first Australian Cricket side to ever tour England.

Once in England, they took to the field 99 days out of a possible 126, playing 47 matches in 40 centres. Its a feat not matched by any team since.

In 1988, a decision was made to recreate the original team from modern Indigenous players to celebrate and honour the legacy of the original tour.

Thirty-five First Nations men were selected from cricket teams across the country, many of whom were playing at the highest levels of state cricket.

This select group were bundled off to the Australian Institute of Sport and were put through their paces with a final selection of 11 men to train and prepare for a tour of England.

Those 11 men spent time in Edenhope, Victoria, getting to know each other and immersing themselves in the history

To Save CO2, Australia Opts To Upcycle Tallest Skyscraper "IndyWatch Feed Sydney"

Youtube

In 2014, AMP Capital, an Australian firm, issued a remarkable and unconventional challenge to the architectural community of Sydney: transform their skyscraper headquarters into a new structure without demolishing it.

The goal was to upcycle the AMP Center, formerly the tallest building in Sydney, into the worlds first upcycled skyscraper, resulting in a truly awe-inspiring outcome.

Instead of tearing down the existing AMP Center, the innovative approach involved adding a second tower to its core. This approach proved to be highly beneficial, saving approximately 12,000 tons of CO2 that would have been emitted through the use of heavy machinery and the release of carbon trapped in the cement. To put this in perspective, 12,000 tons of CO2 is equivalent to the maximum energy consumption of the 49-story tower over a period of three years.

Although the AMP Center, constructed in the 1970s, was not in a state of disrepair, it was no longer a suitable option for the company. Rather than committing to the enormous costs associated with demolition and construction from scratch, the firm chose to explore alternative possibilities.

Russias Lavrov: Ukraine conflict will not end until West drops plans to defeat Moscow "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Reuters July 12, 2023

The armed confrontation in Ukraine will continue until the West gives up plans to dominate and defeat Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with an Indonesian newspaper published on Wednesday.

The goal of the US-led collective West is to strengthen its global hegemony, Lavrov told the Kompas newspaper. Lavrov is due to attend the East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum in Jakarta this week, as is U.S. Secretary of State

Why doesnt the armed confrontation in Ukraine come to an end? The answer is very simple it will continue until the West gives up its plans to preserve its domination and overcome its obsessive desire to inflict on Russia a strategic defeat at the hands of its Kiev puppets, according to a transcript of the interview published on Russias foreign ministry website.

For the time being, there are no signs of change in this position.

Russia waged a full-scale invasion in Ukraine in February 2022, calling it a special military operation to denazify its neighbour. Kyiv and its allies call the war, now in its 17th month, an aggression to grab land.

On Wednesday, Russia launched a wave of kamikaze drone attacks on Kyiv for a second night in row and hours before President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was due to meet NATO leaders at a summit in Vilnius.

The West says it wants to help Ukraine win its conflict with Russia, and Western powers have supplied large amounts of modern arms and ammunition to Kyiv.

Lavrov also accused Kyiv of ignoring Indonesias peace plan and instead promoting its own package of ultimatums.

Ukraine dismissed the Indonesian plan, a multi-point formula which had included a call for the establishment of a demilitarised zone, reiterating Kyivs position that Russia should withdraw its troops from Ukraine.

Commenting on the internal strife in Myanmar since a military coup in 2021, Lavrov urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to resolve issues with close cooperation with the junta and without interfering in Myanmars domestic affairs.

ASEAN foreign ministers meeting on Tuesday were expected to address the growing violence in Myanmar. The regional bloc has barred the junta from its summits for failing to implement an agreed peace plan.

Nowhere and everywhere: Wanderer Festivals second year is a big one "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

Last year, Wanderer Festival was a welcome beacon for those tired of the overbearing joy the pandemic gave us all (jks, obvs). It was a festival for all, conveniently located halfway between Sydney and Melbourne while also being a three-hour road trip from Canberra. Set in the scenic coastal town of Pambula Beach, the three-day festival was a huge success, so much so that it was able to grow and return.

Yet another festival-brainchild from Simon Daly, who has given us Falls and The Lost Lands, Wanderer offered a diverse program, wrapped up in an event that aimed to be as green as possible. This year, these same ideas are taken even further, and we caught up with Daly to learn more about what to expect.

BSA Visual Arts Foundation Course students Exhibition Tuesdays "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Tuesdays

An exhibition of work from Term 2 by Byron School of Art first year students working with Michelle Dawson.

The joy of a class can be the communal support of the group and the vortex that is created by everyone being engaged. Sometimes you can feel it swirling above the class. It is there to call on.

This was a big term. We looked at colour theory, complementary colours, composition, colour mixing, and a variety painting techniques.

Each week there was new information and explorations of new territories that could be both confronting and challenging.

We had nine Tuesdays and nine challenges that 16 students met wholeheartedly.

Here is a celebration of that work.

Exhibition runs: Wednesday 12 July Thursday 27 July
Opening hours: Monday Friday, 10am 3pm
BSA Project Space: 112 Dalley Street, Mullumbimby, NSW 2482
