Mission Impossible: Creative Risk "IndyWatch Feed Seq.art"

I liked this long Twitter thread by Arash Amel, who Im pretty sure is a striking movie writer with time to think the big thoughts at the moment.

With MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING (Part 1) looking very shaky at the B.O. this week, it looks like we are seeing a disastrous summer Box Office. Where did it go wrong? The answer is pretty simple. (A THREAD on creative risk.)

of movie studios as off-shoots of media monoliths, the reduction of the role of the creative movie executive to corporate brand manager, and the need to go bigger to please Wall Street. Because you see...

... tired sequels of sequels of sequels with aging stars, and tired formats is a result of a constant chase for growth and size; it's how we ended up with $300m budgets and stale IP. No other business survives this level of negligence in R&D, Hollywood is no exception.

With the need to grow, comes big budgets and fear of the new. We have no younger generation of bankable movie stars because we haven't invested in the type of theatrical movies that typically built them; because studios abandoned lower budget original (or fresh IP) genre movies.

The refrain that people won't go to smaller movies because of streaming is a cop-out, a lie, and pure fear because it would involve a level of risk and creativity at studios that has long been wrung out of its ranks by Wall Street and upper management.

I've seen great -- incredible -- creative execs struggle, I've seen some of the best laid off, and the best of those who remain handcuffed to the same overblown, overpriced, and tired formats.

Everywhere, the larder of creative properties have been exhausted. With that comes Indy 5, Fast 10, MI 7 etc parts 1 2 3 and onwards. Yet once upon a time there was a Mission 1, Fast 1, Raiders etc -- all made for budgets well below $100mil starring young movie stars.

And that truly is the underlying malaise, part of the new phenomenon of America's leaders aging out. Hollywood is no exception. We are in a death spiral. We have to win young audiences back. The only way out is to go back to the creativity and first principles.

We need to get back into the kitchen, and kickstart our R&D again. Drop budgets, take risks on new stars, build new directors, original projects, make 6 at $50mil, or 3 at $100mil if you must, instead of 1 at $300mil.

It won't support Wall Street, but it will support a new cycle of growth, and maybe you end up becoming competitive again and getting that 16-34 crowd back in the theaters. And if anyone says it can't be done, it's simply because they're afraid of doing the creative work.

Money won't fix this problem. An MBA won't fix it either. Only creative risk will. But who's to blame? The same people who got us into the mess of a double actors and writers strike are the same ones responsible for the dire state of H...

Pioneering a new era in music since their formation in 1977, The Human League were one of the first bands to use computers and sequencers to create rhythm and music paving the way for the decades of electronic music that were to follow. In 1982, the Sydney Morning Herald was already describing them as one of the first futurist bands.

United by a shared vision of pushing the boundaries of avant-garde electronic music, The Human League captivated audiences with their cutting-edge visuals and mind-blowing light displays, taking their performances to a whole new level. Their early singles like Being Boiled drew in dedicated fans, but it was the release of the chart-topping hit Dont You Want Me that catapulted them to international stardom, initiating the second wave of the British Invasion in the United States and sparking a revolution in the electronic, avant-garde music scene.

With an impressive discography boasting nine studio albums since 1979, The Human League proved their staying power, with five top 20 hits in the UK and two top 40 hits in the US. Dare, their 1981 masterpiece, stole the hearts of millions, reaching number one on charts in the UK, Sweden, New Zealand, and Canada, while peaking at an impressive number three on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album featured not only the platinum-selling anthem Dont You Want Me but also other timeless tracks like Open Your Heart and Love Action (I Believe In Love).

Their influence is undeniable, having sold over 20 million records worldwide and leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. Mike Talisman basks in love on the warm, acoustic new single Table For One "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Love takes centre stage on Mike Talismans brand new single Table For One, as the Melbourne-based singer/songwriter sifts through the all-encompassing feeling of finding that special someone.

Capturing an artist coming into his skin, Talisman leaves a lasting and memorable mark, fusing together elements of Country, Pop, and Alternative to create an earnest brand of music that will tug at your heartstrings.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Table for One is a masterpiece of sonic warmth and raw, unfiltered emotion. Intimate, stripped-back and full of romantic wonder, Talisman sings:

We found each other, in a world full of billions, so lets lie forever till the world turns black.

Tender and enchanting, if the lyrics arent enough to have a calming effect on you, the musingly slow tempo and Talismans honest, swoonful singing certainly should. Crafting a style that is country at its heart, yet still accessible to the masses, the subtle acoustic folk-pop tinged tune captures the magic, the wonder and timelessness of true love.

This one is for the lovers out there. I wanted to create a track that would give the feeling of holding your soulmate close under the covers whilst an ominous storm erupts all around, Talisman says.

An artist-to-watch, Mike Talisman has been writing and performing music since a very young age, joining his first band at age 12 after being inspired by his fathers outstanding record collection.

Growing up in the countryside at the base of the Grampians Mountain Ranges had a profound impact on Talisman and his writing. The troubadour eventually moved to Melbourne at age 18 to pursue his musical career.

It wasnt until 2022 that Mike Talisman truly found himself and his voice through his debut single, Due Time. The heartbreaking single tells the story of the day Talisman lost his father. The single was aired on over 300 radio stations worldwide and quickly garnered over 10k streams. It has since received coverage via AAA Backstage, Countrytown, Australian Music Scene and many more, whilst gaining traction on dozens of Spotify playlists.

Talisman recently headed back into the studio with ARIA award winning producer Troy Brady (Amity Affliction) to record his new single.

New single Table For One from Mike Talisman is available on all major online streaming services.

Explore the Barry Humphries iconic costumes at new Arts Centre Melbourne display "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

A time capsule of items exploring the career of iconic Australian comedian Barry Humphries will be on display at Arts Centre Melbournes Smorgon Family Plaza until 30 August 2023.

The free display curated from the Australian Performing Arts Collection includes garments worn by Dame Edna Everage at the peak of fame, as well as programmes, screenplays and artefacts from Humphries meteoric rise.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Arts Centre Melbournes Head of Curatorial Margot Anderson hits nostalgic notes with the display, exploring the journey of the star.

It is challenging to sample Ednas expansive wardrobe, but we chose three costumes that have been favourites with visitors in the past. Barry Humphries donated a rich selection of Ednas costumes over many years creating a lively record of her rise from humble beginnings in 1950s Moonee Ponds to international megastardom in the 1990s, she said.

Dame Edna star Barry Humphries has died aged 89

With more than one thousand individual items of Humphries career in the Collection, Anderson and the team channelled the vibrancy and uniqueness of Dame Edna for curatorial inspiration.

These costumes all have Ednas trademark pizzazz and a three-dimensional quality that would have made her performance on stage even funnier. In addition to the costumes, weve selected items from Barrys extensive collection including programmes, photographs and correspondence that capture the many facets of his career, she said.

The Australian Performing Arts Collection was founded in 1975 and is the largest specialised performing arts collection in the country holding close to 800,000 unique items relating to the history of circus, dance, music, opera, and theatre in Australia.

This display is located in Smorgon Plaza, Level 5 of the Theatres Building in front of the entry to the Fairfax Theatre. Visit the display before your show, to remember Barry Humphries iconic career.

Open daily, until Wednesday 30 August. Find out more here...

Botanical sketches and tree rubbings. "IndyWatch Feed Seq.art"

These drawings were done in my home studio while the rubbings were done in stunning virgin scrub in Gumburra [ SE Queensland] during a weekend rite of passage retreat for my eldest grandson. For the rubbings I used Japanese paper and charcoal easily carried to the camp site and for the other drawings I continue to experiment with graphite, ink, gesso and charcoal on old dictionary and/or encyclopaedia pages [ 1950s printing] I occasionally use standard visual diary paper [300gsm.] The green and black ink drawings are of a majestic succulent plant at the door of my studio given to us by my late mother, Myrtle Breen. Following Ketnridges lead, I have added red pencil to the smaller gesso and ink drawings. There are 12 drawings in each set except for the black and sepia ones.

The tree rubbings on the retreat were brought about because my usual go-to is to use my iPhone camera to capture images and it was a no-phone weekend event! Brilliant! It forced the issue to hold a non-digital memory and to consider other means of mark making. It was an extremely satisfying activity.

It contained four hit singles, none more iconic than the timeless anthem Dont You Want Me, which remains a radio favourite to this day.

Interestingly, the bands frontman Philip Oakey originally considered Dont You Want Me to be the weakest track on Dare!, but time proved him wrong.

Games scrapped "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Regional Victoria will not host the 2026 Commonwealth Games with premier Daniel Andrews this morning announcing the cost associating with the event was too high.

An initial budget of $2.6 billion was pledged, but Premier Andrews said the cost had blown out to more than $6 billion.

Thats well and truly too much for a 12-day sporting event, he said.

I think all Victorians would agree that more than $6 billion is just too much. Ive made a lot of difficult decisions in this job. This is not one of them. Were simply not going to invest that money.

The state government will push ahead with legacy projects such as the construction of gymnastics and aquatics centres in Waurn Ponds and Armstrong Creek.

The Games were expected to bring 100,000 people to the region according to Minister for Commonwealth Games delivery Jacinta Allan.

In April Minister for Commonwealth Games legacy Harriet Shing said the 2026 Games would host nine sports in Geelong and is estimated to contribute more than $3 billion to Victorias economy.

The Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games have officially been cancelled with the premier today (18 July) confirming Victoria will no longer host the games due to financial issues.

Andrews revealed that the 2026 Commonwealth Games could cost as high as $7bn.

The games will not proceed in Victoria in 2026, Andrews said.

Stay up to date with whats happening in and around the region here.

Whats become clear is that the cost of hosting these games in 2026 is not the $2.6bn which was budgeted and allocated it is in fact at least $6bn and could be as high as $7bn.

I will not take money out of hospitals and schools in order to fund an event that is three times the cost estimated and budgeted for last year.

The main reason we agreed to host the Games was to create a big lasting benefit for our regions with more housing, boosts to tourism and sporting infrastructure upgrades.

To make up for the loss, the premier has announced a $2 billion spending package for regional Victoria, which was to act as a boost for facilities in the host centres.

That money includes a $1 billion Regional Housing Fund to build 1,300 new homes across regional Victoria.

The government also revealed it is committed to improving sporting facilities across regional Victoria and says the planned upgrades that were to accompany the Games will still go ahead, including the likes of Eureka Stadium in Ballarat and upgrades to Bendigo Stadium.

The premier also confirmed the games would not be moved to a city like Melbourne, with costs still too high.

We have looked at every conceivable option. All of them are far in excess of the $2.6 billion thats been budgeted, so all of them represent more cost than there is benefit, and on that basis none of those options stack up and were not going to be hosting the games in 2026.

The Commonwealth Games were originally scheduled to be held between 17-29 March 2026, beginning with the Opening Ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where athletes and visitors from around Australia and the world would gather to celebrate the start of the...

Riding for SIDS awareness "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Bellarine cyclists are encouraged to jump on their bikes to raise money for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) through the Red Nose support service.

The Ride the Month of August for SIDS encourages cyclists of all ages and abilities to ride their bikes on the road, gym, or in their homes to raise money for grieving families and SIDS research.

The event coincides with August 5s Ride the Bellarine for SIDS, where 30 cyclists travel 110km of the Bellarine Peninsula, and director Peter Herrick said it was the first time riders could join online.

Were thrilled to roll out the Ride the Month of August for SIDS online in 2023, he said.

Were excited to welcome not only Victorians but riders from across the country to join us for this important cause.

You can clock up your kilometres in the comfort of your own home, at the gym or your favourite riding spot, its all up to you. The best part is that every cent raised goes directly to Red Nose.

Mr Herrick said the 2023 event had already raised more than $12,000 and that cyclists that joined the fundraiser event online could ride as many kilometres as they like throughout August.

We are blown away by the communitys continued support and generous donations, he said.

However, theres still plenty of time to sign up, jump on the bike and raise funds to be part of this wonderful cause.

You can also donate directly to the ride, so please dig deep this winter for Red Nose.

The 2023 Ride the Month of August for SIDS follows last years Ride the Bellarine for SIDS event success that raised $26,500 for Red Nose.

More information on how to participate and donate is available at www.rideforsids.com.

Seagulls back to their best "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Barwon Heads regained top form in a thumping 56-point win against Drysdale in round 14 of Bellarine Football League on Saturday July 15.

In a high-standard game in trying conditions, the Seagulls had too many avenues in attack with co-coach Mitch Herbison, young star Ollie Wiltshire and livewire small forward Luca Vella all booting four goals.

It was Vellas best game for the club while Michael Philp was a standout.

The Hawks didnt play badly, but just ran into a side that was hell bent on ironing out some creases in its game.

Ben Fennell booted five goals while Ben Henderson played one of his best games of the season.

Undefeated Torquay eventually shrugged off a determined Ocean Grove by 12 points.

Ocean Groves past two weeks have been losses, but by a combined 26 points to the leagues two best teams.

Ben McNamara and Nathan Mifsud were the Tigers best while ruckman Ed Dayman stood tall for the Grubbers.

Anglesea scooted a game and a half clear in fourth spot with an important win against fellow finals contender Geelong Amateur.

Ammos led by 17 points at the first break, but Anglesea was in front by three at half time.

But with Jarod Bacon (three goals) in fine form, the Roos prevailed by seven points despite the best efforts of Riley Ferguson, who booted three for Ammos.

Ammos are in fifth spot, equal on points with sixth-placed Modewarre.

Modda pretty much ended Queenscliffs finals hopes with a 25-point win.

Modda should win against Portarlington this week while Ammos face a tough one against Drysdale. If results go their way, the Warriors will be in the five by the end of round 15.

Morgan Fenton and Troy Anderson were Modewarres best while Jordy McIvor-Clarke continued his stellar season for the Coutas.

Newcomb won its second game of the season and it seems Portarlington will have to wait until 2024 to taste victory again.

The 52-point margin was much more than many were predicting with the Demons restricted to just one goal and 11 behinds.

Gyrgy Ligeti, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and bold red typography the sentient sound of CORINs Lux Aeterna. "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

  • :: CORIN on The Playlist with Darren Lesaguis

Melbourne producer CORINs second album Lux Aeterna is made of musical lightbeams. Try to follow the path of any one sound and youll quickly become entangled, as each shimmers and glides before doubling over, looping back in on itself, and scattering to trail patterns of beautifully indiscernible self-reflexivity. Underneath this layer of breathless light shifts a restless, formless being, a sentient sound slowly floating like an amoeba through time. Its really damn cool.

CORIN joined Darren Lesaguis on The Playlist to chat all about the new record, which is our Album of the Week this week at FBi.

Lux Aeterna was made mostly in 2020 and 2021, and was finished by the beginning of 2022. It borrows its title, a latin phrase meaning eternal light, from a choral work written by Hungarian-Austrian modernist composer Gyrgy Ligeti. Ligeti and his 20th century counterparts were a formative influence for CORIN, who was classically trained in piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Over the past couple of years Ive been practising music and sort of finding a way to merge all of those different interests and styles in a way thats authentic to myself.

The resultant celestial space opera is at once futuristic, bygone, and eternal, like a sci-fi novel from the 1800s, or the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The 1968 film is an influence CORIN cited explicitly, and also implicitly in her record Kubrick included several Ligeti...

After eight years of good old-fashioned yum cha, Geelongs Golden Dragon Yum Cha has closed its doors "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

For the past eight years in a historic former bank in the heart of Geelong, sat one of the best destinations for the glorious feasting ritual of yum cha Golden Dragon Yum Cha Restaurant.

Taking over the 1888 Boom Classicism style two-storey brick bank, the dining destination (co-owned by Bryan Mu the restaurateur behind Shinra Ramen and Toki) earned itself a solid reputation among yum cha enthusiasts since opening back in 2015 for their take on the traditional Cantonese brunch, involving Chinese tea and dim sum small plates of steam, pan-fried and deep-fried dishes to be shared.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Boasting a menu full of classics with a slight twist to them, the restaurant officially announced its closure to social media back in June, citing post-covid trading and financial challenges.

After eight years, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Golden Dragon Yumcha. It has been an incredible journey serving our esteemed patrons and being part of your dining experiences, the post said.

Due to after covid tough trading and financial challenge, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations. While this was not an easy choice, we believe it is the right one for the long-term sustainability of our business.

With its prime position in the CBD, Golden Dragons yum cha was one of the best excuses to get together with friends with a tonne of food, a few teas and a bottle of soft drink or two.

The business expressed its appreciation to its customers over the years for allowing them to be part of the citys hospitality story for almost a decade.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has dined with us throughout the years. Your loyalty and support have been instrumental in making Golden Dragon Yumcha a beloved dining destination within our community. It has been our pleasure to serve you and share our passion for exquisite Chinese cuisine.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all our customers, staff members, and community for your incredible support and patronage throughout the years. We will always remember the laughter...

Dolphins teaching each other to beg a concern "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

University of Queensland researchers have discovered dolphins in the Moreton Bay Area, teaching fellow dolphins to beg for food from recreational fishers.

This sophisticated behaviour was first noticed in a study into the social structures of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins.

Since fishing is popular in the region, dolphins have now begun to take advantage of the feeds. But researchers warn this adaptive strategy may pose long term risks, and spread throughout wider dolphin populations.

Researchers also state better policing and awareness of illegal dolphin feeding is essential in avoiding harmful effects on these marine mammals.

Hindutva Goes to Washington: Narendra Modis US Visit "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Again, he was at it, that charming show on two legs, playful and coy.  Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been burning the charismatic fuel of late, making the necessary emissions in visiting friendly countries.  Each time, he seems to be getting away with more and more, currying (pun intended) favour with his hosts and landing the necessary deals.

For all the excitement of going to a fellow cricket loving state such as Australia, no one was under any illusion about the prize.  Easy gains there on matters of commerce, education and security: a pliant PM, a pliant Cabinet, a political and business class hungering for access to a country which recently passed China as the most populous on the planet.  In all of this, Modi had the audacity to urge Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to do something about reported acts of vandalism against Hindu temples in Melbourne.

In scale, nothing was going to compare to courting the superpower that, for all its might, teeters.  On his June visit to the United States, Modi was building on earlier efforts to show India as a viable partner in a number of areas.

The Modi visit exemplified the calculations of the moment.  The US has been rather clumsy of late, engaging in a foreign policy described by former US Secretary of the Treasury, Lawrence Summers, as a bit lonely.  US foreign policy makers have tended to miss a bit or two, not least understanding the value Indian officials place on their military relationship with Moscow.  The Indian political establishment is also mindful about how useful New Delhi is seen in Washington, the traditional counter to Beijing. That counter, however, is seen as subordinate to maintaining US supremacy under the lecturing guise of the rules-based order.

Such poses are simply not acceptable in either the Modi worldview or those of Indian policy makers.  As Indias External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has opined with a tart frankness, Washingtons power can be described as a transient moment of American unipolarity.  To assume, arrogantly, that history was at its end at the conclusion of the Cold War was a Eurocentric analysis jettisoned by nationalism. It is exactly such nationalism that Modi brims with.

The joint statement from the two countries made familiar, and predictable assumptions.  Much of it was frothy.  Both Biden and Modi affirmed a vision of the United States and India as among the closest partners in the world a partnership of democracies looking into the 21st century with hope, ambition, and confidence.  Naturally, there is no mention of Modis nationalistic....

Institutional cruelty exposed by three royal commissions "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Institutional cruelty exposed by three royal commissions

Recent inquiries have brought to light the lack of accountability from government institutions engaging in cruelty and human rights abuses, writes Max Costello.

TWO PRESIDING officers Federal Court Justice Bernard Murphy in the case of Mostafa Moz Azimitabar, and Robodebt Royal Commissioner Catherine Holmes recently said damning things about the ethics of major Australian institutions and their senior office holders. Similar words were said in 2018 by Banking Royal Commissioner Kenneth Hayne and in 2017 by Justice Peter McClellan, chair of the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Royal Commission.

So, how to prevent, punish (and thus deter) such embedded cruelty in the behaviour of both government and non-government institutions? In pub test terms, it seems amazing that no institutions have been prosecuted and no senior officers gaoled.

On Thursday 6 July, Justice Murphy found against a civil claim, lodged by Kurdish refugee Moz, that his detention in two hotel APODs (alternative places of detention) was unlawful. Yes, it was lawful, Murphy decided. But, he added in post-decision remarks, that did not imply his approval of Mozs treatment by the Government.

Murphy said:

I can only wonder of the lack of thought, indeed the lack of care and humanity, in detaining a person with psychiatric and psychological problems in the hotels [for] 14 months.

Last Friday, the report of Robodebt Royal Commissioner Hol...

Ruthless Cats in Bomber blitz "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Geelongs premiership defence is finally gathering steam after crushing Essendon by 77 points in an ominous performance at GMHBA Stadium.

As they often do at Kardinia Park, the Cats ended the contest early after slamming through the opening seven goals of the match to lead by 46 points at quarter-time on Saturday.

Shell-shocked Essendon was able to steady during the second term but it was already too late as the Cats inflicted further pain during the 18.14 (122) to 7.3 (45) triumph.

The result lifts Geelong up to fifth the highest position it has sat in all season after dropping the opening three matches of its flag defence.

The sight of a rampaging Cats unit will strike fear into the rest of the AFL, after coach Chris Scott during the week declared they are the danger.

Scott said it was probably Geelongs best performance of the season.

I think, were in general, getting closer to our best footy, and even from a personal perspe ctive, we were confident going into this week, he said.

It feels like were getting close to our best footy which were pretty confident thats going to be hard to beat.

Geelong could still pinch a top-four spot and a double finals chance as they sit just a game-and-a-half behind Melbourne.

It is no coincidence one of the Cats most powerful performances came in a match when star forward Jeremy Cameron, Norm Smith medallist Isaac Smith and premiership defender Jake Kolodjashni returned from injury.

Cameron, who missed the previous two games through concussion, spent periods off the ground after being involved in multiple collisions.

The 30-year-old played out the match and waited until the dying stages to kick his first and only goal of the match.

But fellow star Cats forward Tom Hawkins picked up the slack with five goals, four of them in the second-half.

Speedy midfielder Max Holmes had one of the best games of his young career, gathering a career-high 33 disposals 21 in the first half.

Geelong forward Gryan Miers, in his 100th game, booted the first goal of the match and delivered a memorable celebration after being at the centre of a meme comparing him to soccer legend Lionel Messi this week.

While the Cats pulled out party tricks, Essendon was on the end of their heaviest defeat since losing to Port Adelaide by 84 points in round 22 last season the match that ended Ben Ruttens stint as coach.

The Bombers entered the match on a high after smashing Adelaide last week in a performance captain Zach Merrett labelled as the Bombers best in his 10 years at the club.

Clearly we were really disappointed after a good performance last week but its just more evidence to me that its a really tough competition, Essendon coach Brad Scott said.

The long walk: creek valleys, category 1 climbs "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

A hardy group of five set out in brilliant frosty weather yesterday for FOBIFs June long walk. Walk conditions were perfect, as was the length of the walk, estimated as between 12 and 24 kilometres. We suspect the second estimate was a little subjective.

Middleton Creek, July 16: check last weeks post to see how the water levels have dropped..but the creek is still running strongly.

The walk covered the wonderfully various country at the south end of the Diggings Park: substantial moss covered rock walls, wide green valleys, rocky ascents, unusually impressive giant eucalypts. The south point was the strongly running Middleton Creek. Fungi were in abundance, and the recent wet weather had given the bush a particularly lush appearance.

Our thanks  to Jeremy Holland for as usual providing an intriguing route through little known corners.

Next months walk is in the wildflower hotspot of the Maldon Historic Reserve. Check the website for details.

A downbeat note: the destruction goes on "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

A downbeat note for FOBIFs walkers along Wewak track yesterday was the sight of yet more evidence of timber theft along this track.

Wewak Track, July 16: FOBIF has regularly reported destruction of this kind along the track.

Wewak track seems to be a favourite spot for timber thieves, and their efforts are threatening to strip this picturesque track of its better trees. Parks Victoria seems to be powerless to stop the destruction. Thieves operate comfortably, sure in the belief that the last person they can expect to see in this bush is a ranger: readers of this site will be familiar with our observations on the under resourcing of our parks.

Weve been assured by Parks in the past that the problem is being tackled at the distribution end. The method doesnt seem to be working: and of course things are not helped by the explosion in the cost of home heating.

Pedestrians urged to Stop. Look. Live "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Pedestrians are being urged to Stop. Look. Live. as part of a new Crime Stoppers Victoria campaign delivered in partnership with Victoria Police.

The campaign will focus on reducing the number of pedestrians seriously injured or killed while crossing the road in built up areas, where there is a speed limit of 60km/h.

Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith said the campaign would use a variety of techniques to educate vulnerable pedestrians on how they can stay safe using Victorian roads.

Every Victorian deserves to get home safely and the easiest way to achieve this is to identify risks and follow the road rules, Ms Smith said.

No matter whether you are a pedestrian, driver or cyclist on the road, we challenge everyone to stop and think, is this safe?

According to Victoria Police and TAC data, 70 percent of all pedestrian deaths in Victoria occur in metropolitan Melbourne.

The most vulnerable people are primary school children aged 4-12, intoxicated pedestrians aged 30-39 and elderly pedestrians aged over 70.

Ms Smith said 36 pedestrians had been killed on Victorian roads over the past 12 months a figure she hoped would decrease with more education.

We all play a role in keeping our roads safe and Crime Stoppers Victoria is offering vulnerable pedestrians the tools they need to use our roads safely, she said

We have seen 175 pedestrians killed on our roads over the last five years, and a significant number of those have been in 60 km/h zones.

We hope with more education and awareness we can reduce the number of injuries and most importantly, deaths on our roads.

As part of the campaign, Crime Stoppers Victoria will hit the streets to actively engage with high-risk pedestrians to educate them on how they can help keep our roads incident free.

Crime Stoppers will also visit locations across Melbourne which have the highest number of pedestrian fatalities, focusing particularly on community hubs and primary schools.

Victoria Police Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin OBrien said police were focused on protecting the most vulnerable road users.

Too many vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, are being killed or seriously injured and its all too preventable.

We are grateful to have Crime Stoppers Victoria launching this campaign, along with the many councils, schools and businesses that will support this initiative to improve road safety, he said.

Everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads safe, and we urge everyone to think not only about their own safety but how their behaviour can impact the safety of others.

Helping little anglers get hooked on fishing "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Victorias next generation of recreational fishers are getting the opportunity to get hooked on fishing, with free Little Angler Kits for kids across Victoria.

Outdoor Recreation Minister Sonya Kilkenny announced 60,000 kits will be made available to grade five primary students in more than 1900 Victorian schools later this year.

The kits will set families up with everything they need to wet a line including a fishing rod and reel, line, tackle box, some tackle and a Kids Guide to Fishing that includes information and links to educational resources to learn the basics such as fishing safety, knots and rigs.

The kits will help youngsters get active, learn about the aquatic environment and have fun in the great outdoors whether they be down the coast, on Port Phillip Bay or by a river in regional Victoria.

The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) is leading the roll out and has released a tender today for the supply of kits, with schools encouraged to register early interest.

The Little Angler Kits complements several other initiatives led by the VFA to encourage youngsters to connect with nature and enjoy Victorias spectacular waterways. This includes the stocking of almost 10 million fish last season, more than any other state in the country.

For the September school holidays, 80 family fishing lakes across the state share in more than 60,000 catchable-size rainbow trout to provide children the chance to catch their first fish.

Every year, free VicFishKids events provide kids with the opportunity to try fishing with help from experts and Fishcare volunteers. All fishing gear is supplied and every child heads home with a free rod to continue their fishing journey on their next holiday with family and friends.

We want more young people getting into fishing because we know it brings people together in the great outdoors, boosts local businesses and encourages Victorians to discover new parts of this great state, Ms Kilkenny said.

Offering free Little Angler Kits through schools helps the next generation of fishers reel in a hobby they can enjoy for a lifetime.

The ceremony was attended by many of this years finalists who travelled from across the country to join in the celebrations.

Davies Replica was selected as the winning portrait from a field of 72 finalists, including emerging and established photographers from around Australia. Davies is the 12th artist to win the Award, which was first presented in 2005.

The announcements were made in an official opening and presentation ceremony at Tweed Regional Gallery, Murwillumbah on Saturday 15 July. The event was also live-streamed for those who could not attend.

The Award was judged by artist, curator and critic Dr Daniel Mudie Cunningham. Dr Mudie Cunningham visited the Gallery on Friday 14 July to view all works installed before making his final decision.

Dr Mudie Cunningham said hiding is not something we associate with portraiture. A conventional portrait requires a subjects presence and disclosure to connect with the world.

Conquering my bogey bird "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

In recent years Ive been quietly pursuing this bird, the Eastern Barn Owl.

Often regarded as a boom and bust species the Eastern Barn Owl is relatively common in the district and can be found across the Moolort Plains and in wooded farmland areas. Its numbers fluctuate with those of its major prey, rodents.

Why then has it been my bogey bird?

Ive observed it on a number of occasions, usually at night in the car headlights or sadly deceased on a country road it hunts low to the ground and vehicle strike is a major threat to this beautiful owl. A few times a bird has departed from its roost before I could raise the camera.

Late yesterday afternoon, acting on a tip-off, I finally managed to photograph an Eastern Barn Owl. High up in a veteran Yellow Gum the bird emerged cautiously from a large hollow and basked for a few minutes in the fading winter sunshine. What a thrill!

Barn Owls are a cosmopolitan species, for a long time most forms were classified as Tyto alba, with separate races regarded as subspecies. Recent taxonomic studies have placed the Australian form as a distinct species, Tyto delicatula. Unlike the majority of Australian owls Barn Owls can breed continuously as long as food is abundant. The spot where I observed this bird was typical of an ideal breeding site, possibly one that has been in use for many years.

New school for controversial site in Lennox "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Super Lot 5, corner of Snapper and Montwood Drives, Lennox Head. Photo David Lowe.

Clarence Property, the developer of Lennox Heads Epiq estate, has announced the sale of Super Lot 5, on the corner of Montwood and Snapper Drive, to the NSW Department of Education.

The 4.2ha site will now become the site of the new Lennox Head Primary School, having previously been mooted by the developer as the location of a retirement facility and then a medium-density integrated housing development of over 100 dwellings.

Having run into problems with Ballina Shire Council advancing that idea, Clarence Property appealed to the NSW Department of Planning to change the planned use of the land, but that has now been set aside by the new announcement.

Ballina Cr Kiri Dicker, a critic of the housing development plan, has enthusiastically welcomed the latest news, describing it as an enormous win for the community and a perfect site for the Lennox Head Public School.

On social media, Cr Dicker said, I still cant stop smiling at the news that our new school will be located right in the heart of the Epiq Estate, which is home to so many young families.

All birds are special but some more so than others. In Australia the second smallest kingfisher in the world looms large for many. Small wonder as it is indeed a small wonder. Wonderful to watch in action. Wonderful to watch at rest. So, lots of my latest session (yesterday, 15/07/23) with a Little Kingfisher. A few do it some justice, others less so. Enjoy them all anyway. Little wonders don't come along every day, even in my happy place, the Townsville Town Common Conservation Park.

Search for robins proves successful "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Winter is well and truly in full swing, but there have been some sunny days that have been perfect for being out and about, although its rather soggy underfoot.

I was fortunate to conduct a winter birds on farms survey in Wallington. I was particularly interested in seeing robins, as these birds move from mountainous areas to warmer coastal areas in the winter months, and they have not been seen in as big numbers over the past few years around the Bellarine.

I did not see any robins until the end of the survey, and in the end, there were eight flame robins hanging around a newly ploughed paddock.

There was also the usual small flock of weebills in the yellow gum habitats. Weebills are tiny birds of around 8cm to 9cm in length and are not commonly seen around the Bellarine Peninsula, so its always lovely to spot them.

There were also a few honeyeater species on the farm, as the yellow gums were flowering. The red wattlebirds and New Holland honeyeaters are always present in the area, in all seasons.

I saw a few yellow-faced honeyeaters, which are migratory and make movements to and from south-eastern Australia, mostly flying north in autumn and south in spring. These birds can be seen in large flocks when migrating and in smaller groups when feeding.

I also spotted a few white-naped honeyeaters that are also partially migratory. This species breeds in mountainous areas in the summer months and in autumn some birds migrate north and east in flocks with yellow-faced honeyeaters.

One day on my way to work I called in to the Geelong Botanic Gardens, also on the lookout for robins.

I didnt see any robins but did spot a small flock of eastern spinebills that are also another honeyeater that has seasonal movements from high altitudes to lower regions in autumn and winter.

There was also a flock of silvereyes in a garden near the Botanic Gardens and these birds looked like the Tasmanian subspecies of these birds, as they had grey throats, chestnut flanks and yellow on the undertail. Silvereyes are also highly migratory and move north in the autumn months, returning to breed in southern regions in late winter.

On the way to the Botanic Gardens I drove through Leopold and had the closest encounter with a pair of brown falcons that I have ever had. They were perched in a tree and I drove past, and then did a safe u-turn and said hello. One of the falcons flew away but the other hung around for a photo and a chat.

I could have reached out and shook its wing, I was so close, and the bird was so lovely.

I received a message from Doug, who was walking early in the morning on the beach in Ocean Grove when he spotted an eastern barn owl sitting on top of a sign pole near the steps to the beach.

There are occasional sightings of barn owls on the Bellarine Peninsula, and its always wonderful to know that they are around.

Trek crosses into familiar territory "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Havent we met somewhere before? sprung to mind on my first encounter with the Subaru Crosstrek, for there is a lot in common here with the companys XV sport utility vehicle.

In fact, says Subaru, the newly named compact is the latest iteration of the popular XV, including two petrol / electric hybrid models, aimed at anyone who wants a versatile, reliable, and stylish small SUV.

Priced from $34,990, the all-wheel drive Crosstrek comes in five variants AWD 2.0L, AWD 2.0R, AWD 2.0S, AWD Hybrid L and AWD Hybrid S offering those with an active lifestyle a versatile, reliable, and stylish small SUV.

However, there is a major point of difference between the Crosstrek and its antecedent. The Crosstrek has benefitted greatly from a visit to the doctor a whole team of medics, in fact. Subaru collaborated with a medical school to study the structure of the human body and what causes driver discomfort, fatigue and lower back pain behind the wheel.

Results found ride comfort is not solely affected by the vibration of the vehicle, but also by sounds and changes in visual information because of jerking and head swaying during driving.

Hence seats have been redesigned to reduce shaking of the head and roof damping has been improved to help reduce sound pressure fluctuations in the cabin.

Meanwhile, vehicle health is in the hands of Subarus standard five-year / unlimited kilometre warranty and 12 months complimentary Subaru Roadside Assistance.

The mid-range Crosstrek AWD 2.0R, selling for $38,490, plus on-road costs, was the test vehicle for a week and confidently took on widely varied road and weather conditions well during that time.

STYLING

Once the domain of predominantly white or silver exteriors, or in this case Subaru blue, these days, subtle shades of colour are taking to streets around the world. Take for example the test Crosstrek with its Magnetite Grey Metallic paint job and dark machine finished 18-inch wheels. Who would have thought dull could look so classy?

While the all-round appearance of the Crosstrek is generally a carry-over from the XV, the bonnet and radiator grille come in for a complete redesign, the latter maintaining the signature hexagonal shape, but in a larger more aggressively styled honeycomb.

Use of lightweight aluminium enables a newly designed bonnet to contribute to improved pedestrian protection with a softer head impact zone and a saving of two kilograms in front fenders optimises weight distribution all round.

LED headlamps, plus cornering lights, improve visibility at night and add to power savings, while LED rear combination lamps feature a sharp 3-D C-shape. Rear-view mirrors are smaller, improving aerodynamics and presenting a less obstructive view.

INTERIOR

Q&A with Indigo Aurora on Climate Action "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

Republished from the Bass Coast Post*

On Tuesday, local students took time off school to protest at the NABs financing of the coal industry. The Bass Coast Post asked Indigo Aurora why she attended.

Post: Why did you get involved with School Strike for Climate (SS4C)?

Indigo: I only got properly involved with SS4C this year, but Ive been passionate about fighting for climate justice for years. When I joined Newhaven College at the start of 2023, my amazing friend and activist Joey Thompson introduced me to a local climate action group, and Ive been helping to organise and attend local actions ever since. It makes me feel so empowered to get out there and fight for our environment, alongside other passionate individuals. Although we live rurally, its important that we join this national movement, as we can still achieve great things that will make an impact.

Post: Climate change makes me feel

Indigo: Trapped, like my generations future is hopeless. Its sometimes hard to maintain a positive mental attitude when it feels like the world is slowly crumbling around us.

Post: Do you talk to your friends and family about climate change and climate action?

Indigo: I talk about climate change with my friends and family very frequently, as its on my mind so often. My family are more than supportive of me, and my friends seem to care when I discuss it with them.

Post: Is this your first climate action or have you been involved in direct action before?

Indigo: This is not my first direct action, I have attended over five in total, and helped to organise three.

Post: You should be in class! Whats your response?

Indigo: The SS4C movement is not at all disregarding the importance of our education, its simply asserting that it is so crucial to fight for our dying climate, that we will sacrifice an important part of our lives for it. Students and young people often get treated like we have no power, so we use one of the only things we do have the ability to strike from school and disrupt the daily order of things, to force the government and other people in power to take the climate crisis seriously.

Post: Do you expect the June 20 rally to influence the banks? Or do you see other benefits to the rally?

Indigo: Of course our main goal is to influence th...

005 Artificial Intelligence, Thought and Thinking "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

This episode is on Cartesian Theatre, Socrates Elenchus, GAN and tokens, alcohol and the Divine Masculine. Bit of a ramble really.

How artificial intelligence And human intelligence converge. Or do not. I wanted to start to tackle artificial intelligence, thought and thinking. We humans are not convinced we understand how we think and have spent philosophical lifetimes debating and cogitating. (Rene Descartes Cogito ergo sum, or Dennetts draft mode or quantum consciousness?)
While AI may one day move from a sequential process to a concurrent one, the Divine Masculine will lurch toward a prompt-output approach while the Divine Feminine swims in deep waters. Both exist, both can be right.
GAN (adversarial networks) are similar to Socrates Elenchus only by debating what we know and understand do we truly KNOW. The GAN approach will try and fool the AI into thinking the image is not AI generated. It will build muscle by going back to the drawing board and trying again. A Pros and Cons list.
Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, Camus and Baudelaire, Aldous Huxley, Carlos Castaneda and others took the view that Bacchanalia, Dionysian that alcohol can clarify thinking. Or at least mean a good time while philosophising!
Resources on my website laurelpapworth.com/alchemy as well as my AI Is My CoPilot course (in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Virtual) please go to the Australian Institute of Management website if interested
This is a stream of consciousness recording. It has errors as my brain attempts to compete with generative AI and suffers catastrophic failures (not enough tokens) and hallucinations (outside of ingested dataset) Hey ho.
