Taiwan solution is diplomacy rather than nuclear hell "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Pearls and Irritations, By Bob CarrJul 15, 2023

I have yet to meet an Australian voter willing to go to war over Taiwan. Further, I havent heard of any Australian military leader with a clear idea of Australias role in a showdown between China and the US.

Earlier this year, NASAs survey satellite discovered an Earth-sized world within the habitable zone of a distant star. If it hosts life, its creatures may be listening to our conversations. They are likely amazed that earthlings seem to be sleepwalking towards their first war between nuclear powers.

At the heart of the conflict is the political system that prevails on an island of 23.5 million people because of sovereignty issues left over from two Sino-Japanese wars. These far-off observers might be even more curious if they knew about the availability of a tested formula that for 50 years kept peace in one part of the small blue planet.

I have yet to meet an Australian voter willing to go to war over Taiwan. Further, I havent heard of any Australian military leader with a clear idea of Australias role in a showdown between China and the US. On the contrary, Im told their consensus is that our naval assets would be unprotected against ocean-hugging hypersonic missiles.

One former Defence Department official told me if we sent submarines, wed better make sure that our submariners had their wills made out. Im told one now-deceased former general was fond of saying about our role in the Taiwan Strait: Wed last three minutes.

..The loose war talk over Taiwan led the former US secretary of state , Henry Kissinger to make a solemn warning back in May that we are facing great-power conflict like that which preceded World War I. He used the noun catastrophe.

Kissinger had negotiated the 1972 Shanghai Communique, which offers the diplomatic formula that preserved the peace and can go on preserving it until overtaken by any new political and economic reality 100 years off. The communique allows the world to acknowledge the Chinese claim that Taiwan is its province without endorsing the Chinese claim. And, quickly following, is the principle that reunification would not involve an act of war.

For its part, Taiwan steers away from a declaration of independence. Only 13 of the worlds nations see Taiwan as independent. But it has enjoyed self-government with a contestable political system and a prosperous economy. This strategic ambiguity has served us.

A Taiwan that resembles Hong Kong is not desirable. I said in my recent interview with Mark Bouris, it would be p...

30 Jun 2023  https://www.merri-bek.vic.gov.au/my-council/news-and-publications/news/merri-bek-city-council-is-a-nuclear-free-zone/

Council stands against the use of nuclear power and weapons and has declared Merri-bek as a Nuclear-Free Zone. Nuclear weapons pose a significant threat to our world. This decision reflects our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our community, and our support for global peace and security.

As part of our Nuclear-Free Zone declaration:

  1. We oppose the storage and transportation of uranium, nuclear waste, or any other materials connected to the nuclear industry in Merri-bek, including nuclear submarines. This excludes the use of radio-isotopes in hospitals.
  2. We oppose the establishment of nuclear facilities or nuclear submarine repair facilities in Merri-bek.
  3. We will display signage at the entrances to our municipality declaring our nuclear-free position.

In addition to this declaration, Merri-bek is one of 43 Australian councils that support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and call on the Australian Government to take this action.

Merri-bek has also joined the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Cities Appeal. The Cities Appeal includes cities and towns across the world in support of the treaty.

Australia on track for exemption to accelerate AUKUS nuclear subs deal "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

SMH, By Farrah Tomazin, July 15, 2023

Washington: Australia will be given an exemption from strict US export control laws to help accelerate the delivery of its $368 billion AUKUS submarine deal, under a bipartisan proposal making its way through Congress.

In a boost for the Albanese government, the plan to bolster Australias defences in the Indo-Pacific moved a step closer to reality on Friday (AEST) after a powerful US Senate committee approved draft legislation designed to turbocharge the ambitious three-way military pact with the US and UK.

If approved, the proposal, which was given the green light by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is expected to be debated more broadly next week, will help facilitate the transfer of Virginia-class ships under the AUKUS agreement and strengthen the submarine industrial base of the three nations involved.

But while AUKUS has received broad bipartisan support, questions remain about the lengthy time frame of AUKUS, the extraordinary cost to taxpayers, and the myriad of rules governing the deal. Among them is the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which could delay for years the transfer of crucial

technologies unless the system is reformed or a special waiver is granted.

To that end, the approval by the Foreign Relations Committee, which has jurisdiction over armed export controls and ship transfers, was an important boost for AUKUS, however there is still a long way to go before all the relevant

AUKUS legislation makes it through Congress.

Some US politicians have also raised concerns that AUKUS could stretch Americas industrial base to breaking point, given the industry was already struggling to meet its target to build two attack submarines a year.  https://www.smh.com.au/world/north-america/australia-on-track-for-exemption-to-accelerate-aukus-nuclear-subs-deal-20230715-p5dofd.html

Nato isnt defending Ukraine. Its stabbing it in the back "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

So far, Ukraines much-vaunted spring counter-offensive has turned into a damp squib, despite western media spin about slow progress. Moscow is holding on to the Ukrainian territories it annexed.

More than 110 states not including the US, of course have ratified a 2008 international convention outlawing cluster munitions. Many are in Nato.

Middle East Eye, Jonathan Cook. 14 July 2023

The US and its allies are sustaining the very war they now cite as grounds for disqualifying Kyiv from Nato membership .

he Nato summit in Lithuania this week served only to underscore the utter hypocrisy of western leaders in pursuing their proxy war in Ukraine to weaken Russia and oust its president, Vladimir Putin.

Both the US and Germany had made clear before the summit that they would block Ukraines admission to Nato while it was in the midst of a war with Russia. That message was formally announced by Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday.

War Effort In Shambles As Hawks Turn On Each Other At NATO Summit "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Zeo Hedge, BY TYLER DURDEN, THURSDAY, JUL 13, 2023

Bloomberg is just out with a devastating behind-the-scenes account of a hot-headed Zelensky at the NATO summit in Vilnius, and the growing Western backlash in the face of his obvious frustration and whats being seen as ingratitude for the steady flow of billions of dollars in arms to Kiev.

Apparently even the mainstream media agrees with our own assessment of the Ukrainian leader having thrown a tantrum as he complained about the weak and absurd NATO stance on Ukraines membership. The blistering tweet he issued in English while en route to Lithuania exposed cracks in the alliance, as Bloomberg highlights in the opening of its very revealing Wednesday piece

Volodymyr Zelenskiy was running hot ahead of his sit-down with NATO leaders on Tuesday evening. The Ukrainian president had been angered earlier in the day by what he said was an absurd reluctance to give his country a clear timeline on membership.

That outburst in turn riled the partners who have funneled billions of dollars of weaponry and aid into Ukraines defense against the Russian invasion  the US had been given no warning before Zelenskiy unleashed his attack on social media.

As Bloomberg writes: Over dinner in Vilnius, with US President Joe Biden back at his hotel, the other leaders delivered a clear message to Zelenskiy, according to one person who was present. You have to cool down and look at the full package, Zelenskiy was told.

While its not quite yet a full on hero to zero story things are certainly sliding in that direction, given its unprecedented that the Ukrainian president who previously enjoyed rockstar status in Western capitals since the start of the invasion could be told to basically cool it!

Bloomberg continues in reference to Zelensky: He had, after all, been given a renewed commitment to eventual membership and new security guarantees from the Group of Seven nations. By the next day, the message appeared to be sinking in. The publication was privy to some key Western leaders exact words, presenting the rare dressing down ...

France detonated nearly 200 nuclear tests in French Polynesia now this activist is calling for accountability "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

By Bobby MacumberDan Smith and Alice Matthews for Stories from the Pacific, 14 July 23  https://news.google.com/articles/CBMiVGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmFiYy5uZXQuYXUvcGFjaWZpYy9udWNsZWFyLXRlc3RpbmctZnJlbmNoLXBvbHluZXNpYS1oaW5hLWNyb3NzLzEwMjU4NTkzMNIBAA?hl=en-AU&gl=AU&ceid=AU%3Aen

Hinamoeura Cross was seven years old when France tested its last nuclear bomb in 1996 in French Polynesia.

It was detonated deep underground on the atoll of Fangataufa, in a deep shaft drilled into volcanic rock, and sent a white shockwave into the air, visible on grainy television cameras at the time.

I dont have any memory of it, Hina told Stories from the Pacific.

I was growing up. I never learned about the consequences of nuclear bombs at school. I didnt even know there had been so many.

Three to five was the figure Hina had in mind when she was younger.

But in fact, by the time France finished its testing program on the atolls of Fangataufa and Moruroa, around 190 nuclear tests had been conducted.

Nuclear explosions had been conducted in lagoons, dropped from planes and suspended from helium balloons. After international pressure, testing moved underground.

The largest was codenamed Canopus, which was a two-stage thermonuclear test that exploded in 1968 while suspended from a balloon.

It was around 200 times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The combined effect of the testing was equivalent to a Hiroshima-sized nuclear bomb exploding in French Polynesia every week for 14 years, Hina said

Today, our ocean is totally contaminated. Its like a poison, she said.

I really feel that in my blood I have been poisoned because of those nuclear tests and we have so many thousands of Tahitian people who are sick you cant find a family without cancer.

And its really hard because they dont understand the consequences of the nuclear tests because theyre not aware today.

Subjects in school touched on the nuclear bombs dropped in Japan, but Hina said nothing was taugh...

Fadden by-election live "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

11:31 Im finished for the night. We are still waiting for the two-party-preferred figures from Helensvale pre-poll centre and otherwise have all the results wed expect tonight. The 2PP swing is sitting on 1.7% at the moment. Really quite modest.

I probably wont be preparing any more content on Fadden but stay tuned for more election coverage soon. Ive got another podcast lined up two weeks from now, and will be posting the first part of my federal election guide in the next few weeks. And Ill be sure to update my federal by-election dataset to include Aston and Fadden once the Fadden results are finalised.

Thanks for tuning in.

10:53 We might get slightly more results tonight but were getting close to the end so I thought I would wrap up the race.

At the moment, the swing to the LNP is sitting on 1.6%, but that may well change as the remaining votes are counted.

I dont think the result is particularly remarkable, although I expect there will be attempts to swing it in both directions. Governments generally dont do well in opposition by-elections, and a modest swing in the other direction is nothing to write home about.

The other story of interest is the Legalise Cannabis result. They are currently sitting on 7.88%, with the Greens down 4.1% to 6.4%.

That has been largely interpreted as Legalise Cannabis taking votes off the Greens, and Im sure thats partly true but Im sure there are votes moving all over the place. Legalise Cannabis did not run for Fadden in 2022, but the party didnt do this well in the seat for the Senate in 2022, so it does seem like a good result.

It seems like another chapter in the story of the emergence of minor parties of the left in general and Legalise Cannabis in particular challenging territory that the Greens once had to themselves.

Legalise Cannabis has already won seats to upper houses in three states and were the best-polling parties to not win a seat at the 2022 federal election.

I think there may be a story about seats like Fadden being better suited to a different type of left minor party than the Greens. I dont think the Greens need to worry much about these other minor parties in their heartland areas, but I dont think the competition is about to go away.

10:21 The results for tonight are petering out, but Ive got a map here showing the two-candidate-preferred swing and percentage. It shows really clearly where the swing was most heavily concentrated.

Commonwealth Bank: Shifting goalposts and shutting doors

Banks are closing, despite an assurance given to the Senate Inquiry by the Commonwealth Bank that it would not close regional branches until the Inquiry concludes at the end of the year. Dale Webster reports.

THE COMMONWEALTH BANK is at it again.

While to be congratulated on its decision to put a three-year moratorium on regional branch closures in place, the Commonwealth Bank has dragged its co-publisher of the quarterly Regional Movers Index report into an embarrassing situation again by refusing to count its top destinations for regional migration as regional.

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) uses Commonwealth Bank data to compile the report, which has listed the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Geelong as some of its most popular destinations for people choosing to leave city life behind in preference for a regional location.

But the Commonwealth Bank confirmed that when it comes to branch closures, it is choosing to follow a Bureau of Statistics classification that conflicts with the classification it uses with the RAI in the Regional Movers Index.

The decision leaves Australias three biggest regional cities Geelong, Wollongong and Newcastle as well as the Gold and Sunshine coasts and places such as Bateau Bay, Gosford, Maitland, Murwillumbah, Raymond Terrace, Katoomba, Bacchus Marsh and Mandurah, still vulnerable to the loss of their Commonwealth banks until 2026.

They are among 490 branches the Commonwealth Bank could choose to close at any time (see map below)

Where is the Political Saturation Point? "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

The level of government intervention in our economy and society is rapidly approaching its saturation point. It is now no longer possible to do much of anything without political considerations dominating the decision to act.

Whether you risk being in breach of a long list of obscure laws, face a vast compliance burden that makes the activity pointless to pursue, face politically favoured competition, are subject to selective enforcement of rules, or have to grease the wheels in order to get anything done, the government now has so many of its fingers in so many pies that there is no pie left to eat.

This has terrible implications for our prosperity in the future. But I better explain what I mean

Alternatively, if youre not in the mood for a long-winded explanation, try helping a child open a lemonade stand on your street corner. Then you can learn the hard way what Im on about

For those of us who have an inkling of whatll happen to children attempting to be entrepreneurial and decide to stay safely on computer screens instead, here are some examples of what I mean from around the world.

Australias new gas code, which had halted new gas developments out of fear, is now likely to find support from producersafter certain exemptions for certain gas developersbut not others.

Did you get your exemption from such government policies which make business unworkable?

The car company Ford recently received a US$9.2 billion loan from the US Government to help it develop EV manufacturing plants. Others competing with Ford went without.

Did you get your government loan to support you?

Here in Australia, but I presume elsewhere too, businesses cant start up unless theyre in the right development zone for their chosen industry, whether its aquaculture or wind farms. Not necessarily by law, but by inconvenience and costs, which are only relaxed in the permitted areas, making those industries only viable there.

Of course, the government makes such favoured zones seem like a benefit. But theyre really an imposed cost on the rest of the country.

Are you in the right development zone for the work you do? Or are you disadvantaged by being subject to the full flight of the law and regulation?

While new nuclear energy remains banned in many places around the world, burning Canadian wood is a popular form of environmentally friendly energy in Europe.

But burn your own local wood in your own house to keep warm, and youre in deep trouble with the government

Not satisfied with promoting EV manufacturing with loans and subsidising EV sales, governments are now imposing petrol and diesel car sales bans in the future.

But will there be enough EVs for all of us? Or will some have to go without them as copper, cobalt and lithium spike in price? No doubt governments wont have trouble securing car fleets

Bank failures are a political decision now too....

The Green Fraud: How Climate Alarmists Are Scamming You (Part One) "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Thats what we will detail in this series of articles as we explore one of the most fraught and contentious issues of our time.

Of course, we are not the Journal of Climatology. Yet, the linkage between climate change and markets could not be more direct.

What the greenies want

Those yelling the loudest about climate change want to destroy the oil and natural gas industry, destroy nuclear power plant construction, shut-down coal-fired plants, end coal mining, mandate electric vehicles (EVs) on very short deadlines, eliminate gas stoves in your kitchen, fireplaces, and even outdoor barbecues.

They also want to build wind turbine arrays offshore and on deserts, plains, and even mountains near you. They want to install solar module fields on every rooftop and open space near a population centre.

The climate change radicals want to increase the mining of lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, rare earths, and other dangerous chemicals to feed their obsession with EV batteries.

Theyre spending hundreds of billions of tax dollars to subsidise the EVs, battery manufacturing, and a coast-to-coast network of charging stations to keep the EVs moving (even if they do have to stop for a charge every 200 kilometres).

The greenies want to mandate 15-minute cities where you can walk everywhere in town within 15 minutes, which means you wont need your car to visit a doctor, dry cleaner, grocery store, pharmacy, or any of the other locations we routinely visit for errands and necessities.

That may sound attractive if you choose it voluntarily. Thats not what the greenies have in mind.

They want 15-minute cities as Trojan horses to eliminate automobiles entirely and force you to ride bicycles or use public transportation.

In the end, youll need a permit to fly to another city. The permits will be rationed, and youll have to put yourself on a waiting list until your turn.

You can pay for your ticket with the new central bank digital currency (CBDC), assuming your social credit score is high enough and you didnt vote for the wrong candidate in the last election.

In short, the climate change agenda is not about climate change. Its about total political and economic control of the population.

So-called climate change is an elite scare tactic to get you to fall into line and obey government orders (as most people do).

Fear prompts obedience

The recent pandemic was a trial run to see if citizens would follow orders that made no sense based on fear. It worked.

Practically everything the government said about the pandemic was a lie. Yet, people obediently followed orders from frauds like Dr Anthony Fauci, who helped to finance the creation of the virus in a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan.

Children suffered worst of all becaus...

John Hewson asserts that Scott Morrison should resign "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Scott Morrison should resign

The Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme has identified appalling dishonesty and lapses in government processes that had serious consequences for the innocent, and their families, who were hounded for non-payment of fictitious debts. The final report clearly documented the poor performance of several government ministers and senior public servants, who quite frankly should have known better than to embrace what the Federal Court concluded to be an illegal and shameful scheme to the detriment of nearly 500,000 Australians, leading to tragedy with the loss of at least two lives.

A combination of key elements made this scandal possible. The first is a Coalition culture, an ideology almost, that leads them to so easily assert that welfare recipients cheat, and that unemployment benefit recipients are dole bludgers. The Human Services minister at the time, Alan Tudge, was saying exactly this when he appeared on A Current Affair in 2016 with a message to anyone who owed Centrelink money: Well find you, well track you down and you will have to repay those debts and you may end up in prison. This general attitude reflects a complete lack of understanding of and empathy for low-income earners, the disadvantaged and those in need. It is perceptible in the Coalitions strategy to oppose the Voice a most derogatory view of First Australians.

Second, a group of public servants lost sight of their basic job, namely to give full, frank and fearless advice, to assist ministers in delivering their policy platforms and good government. Some have argued that, in the end, they must do as instructed by government. But there is an important qualifier here: only if what they are asked to do is legal. This poses the obvious question as to why all players were not focused on legality right from the outset....

Coles and Woolies have you on camera: Say 'cheese'! "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Coles and Woolies have you on camera: Say 'cheese'!

Coles and Woolworths supermarkets have increased security technology in self-checkout areas, leaving many customers feeling undervalued and untrustworthy, writes Tom Tanuki.

THE SELF-SERVICE checkout at the local Coles was showing me a video of myself buying a lemon and a Lebanese cucumber. The video was a true and correct interpretation of events. I really did buy a lemon and a Lebanese cucumber.

While observing this footage made me aware my purchasing decision was being viewed, I wasnt its intended audience. It was mostly being played for the Coles self-service machine attendant whose job it was to use it to assess my honesty.

Cameras at self-service checkouts were first introduced in 2019 to stop us Australians from stealing from our duopolistic supermarket giant overlords: Coles and Woolworths, the two-headed beast bleeding the life out of local competition, town by town, year by year.

Were more broke than ever, with the consumer price index rising much faster than our wages. A lot of that increase comes in the form of food price bumps with food prices at the supermarket giants alone increasing by 9.6 per cent in the past year. That primarily seems to be so that the two-headed beast can deliver record profits, though, with Woolworth's banking over $900 million net profit in 2022-2023.

So if we're broke but want to eat the same amount as usual, we'll just have to steal more food. Right? The supermarket giants have realised this increased risk. And their solution is to start employing more workers to staff their stores again, reversing the self-service trend. Just joking! Their solution is...

Our political swamp will not be cleansed by the disgracing of Morrison

There is a danger in the ongoing humiliation of Scott Morrison that he becomes a convenient fall guy for a wider system failure.

Morrisons conduct in office, and his subsequent refusal to accept the conclusions of a library shelf of damning reports into his misuse of power, is an extreme example of a political culture that created and enabled him. He reflects the worst instincts of an entitled generation of politicians, both Liberal and Labor, who believe that an election victory affirms their right to rule. It confers no such right. It gives them the privilege to represent the Australian people, and the responsibility to protect our democratic institutions.

In which the pond becomes increasingly desperate, and neither the dog botherer or the Angelic one are much help ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

In recent times, pundits have had much fun noting Clarence Thomas's inability to fill out forms correctly or conduct himself with the slightest sign of integrity, while at the same time purporting to offer deep and meaningful originalist interpretations of the law of the land. There's been much hand-wringing WaPo style ... (paywall)

A judicial ethics expert said the pattern was troubling.
Any presumption in favor of Thomass integrity and commitment to comply with the law is gone. His assurances and promises cannot be trusted. Is there more? Whats the whole story? The nation needs to know, said Stephen Gillers, a legal ethics expert at New York University.

But SCOTUS in its current form is a joke and a disregard for forms and ethics is a standard ploy.

Even so, and despite this careful training, the pond was knocked down to discover that an alleged prof and top commentator for the lizard Oz, the oscillating fan, didn't bother to read contracts... (Graudian away)

...Zooming into his hearing last month from the Amalfi coast in Italy, Van Onselen said he had not read the non-disparagement clause in his redundancy contract after being reassured by the Paramount human resources executive Anthony McDonald that he could disparage Ten in various circumstances.
I used the phrase, If the CEO was caught fucking a goat and the rest of the media was piling on then surely I would not be precluded from doing the same, Van Onselen told the court.
I remember Mr McDonald being reassuring and saying something to the effect of, Of course, hopefully it wont come to that.
McDonald told the court there had been no such conversation.
Tens counsel, Arthur Moses SC, questioned the commentator about the phone call, saying he was using a fabricated memory to get away from the impact of the non-disparagement clause.
When Moses asked if he had read the final redundancy document before signing it, Van Onselen replied: No, I did not.
He earlier claimed his legitimacy as a journalist and media commentator was at risk by the media companys contract rules.

If there was any justice in the world, the oscillating fan's legitimacy should be at risk for proudly and defiantly revealing he's a blithering idiot.

Not only did he not read the contract he signed, he also apparently had an imaginary conversation, a kind of recovered memory from the murky recesses of a fetid swamp mind.

The pond was reminded why it rarely paid any attention to the oscillating fan in the lizard Oz, and lo, there he was again today ...

Producer Prices ease

There was some further good news on the inflation front overnight, with US annual producer price inflation falling from an alarming 11.2 per cent a year ago, to just 0.1 per cent over the year to June 2023.

The declines have been seen very consistently over each of the past 12 months.

Producer prices for are goods are now outright declining.

This is something to watch out for in Australia: falling goods prices ahead, but services prices may be stickier.

Import and exports prices have both declined significantly, while the consumer price and producer price indices are at their lowest levels since May and August 2020 respectively.

US could stop Ukraine conflict instantly Hungary "IndyWatch Feed National"

RT | July 14, 2023

The US wants the conflict in Ukraine to continue and has failed to explain its reasons to NATO allies, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said.

Orban told national broadcaster Kossuth Radio that if Washington wished, it could stop the fighting at a moments notice, as Kiev is fully dependent on the West in the fight against Russia.

The Hungarian leader was speaking on Friday morning, after returning from the NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. During the event, the US-led military bloc declined to extend to Kiev a roadmap for membership. Hungary has stood out among members of the alliance by consistently criticizing Western policies on the Ukraine crisis.

If the Americans wanted it, peace would come the next morning. Why Americans dont want that is a question that puzzles the entire world, Orban said. We didnt get an answer at the NATO summit.

At this point, Ukraine has lost any real sovereignty, Orban claimed, citing Kievs devastated economy, and heavy depende...

Cassy O'Connor Resignation, Recount And Run For Hobart "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Clark recount for seat of Cassy O'Connor (Green)
Recount will be won by Vica Bayley (Green)

There's a lot going on in Tasmanian politics at the moment.  I hardly had time to deal with the news of Dorset Mayor Greg Howard's resignation from the Liberal Party before something requiring more urgent attention came along - Tasmanian Greens Leader Cassy O'Connor is resigning from parliament mid-term and, in an extra twist, will run for the Legislative Council seat of Hobart in May next year.  This is the fifth resignation from the Lower House this term, equalling the number in the 2018-21 term.

O'Connor was herself elected on a mid-term recount in 2008 when Peg Putt resigned.  She was re-elected comfortably four times in the state's Greenest division, narrowly topping the poll among individual candidates in both 2010 and 2021.  She served as a Minister (Human Services, Community Development, Climate Change, Aboriginal Affairs) in the 2010-2014 Labor-Greens government and then became party leader in 2015 on the resignation of Kim Booth.

Recount

O'Connor's recount, to be held on July 31, will elect former Wilderness Society campaign manager Vica Bayley, who has stated he will nominate.  Tasmanian Hare-Clark recounts are based solely on the votes that the vacating member had when they were elected, and how candidates fared overall in the original count is irrelevant.  The vote-values that will make up O'Connor's recount are as follows:

89.1% 1 O'Connor (Green)
5.1% Preferences arriving from minor Greens candidates Taylor (2.5%), Smith (2.2%) and Volf (0.4%)
2.0% Preferences arriving from Westcott (Animal Justice)
3.8% Preferences arriving from other candidates, mostly minor left-wing independents

Vica Bayley was the Greens' most promoted support candidate and was by far the highest polling minor Green (though the latter is not directly relevant to this recount, only the former).  He doesn't get any of his own primary votes back in this recount but it will not matter because the share that other candidates get back will be so small.  It's likely more than half of the 1 O'Connor votes will be 2 Bayley, or even if it is somewhat less than half he will still lead by enough to win the countback easily no matter who else contests.

Run for Hobart

The news that O'Connor is to run for Hobart adds interest to what was already an intriguing contest.  Hobart is the most conspicuously left-leaning of the state's 15 Legislative Council seats, and one of the greenest...

The Other Side of Eternity. "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The other side of eternity.

There is an eternity on the other side of sleep,

Where reason has no measure and time cannot be kept,

And the shunting of responsibility is left to desire.

Here lies an eternity that heeds no governing law.

Obeys no geography, nor toes any line we draw.

*

We wonder what the ancients did before time was measured,

Before clocks and sundials, before lucre was treasured,

What they did in a leisure hour after food was eat,

Perhaps pleasure most valued then was to have a damn good sleep?

To sleep and let the day go by and wander into a dream,

Perhaps THAT was the boredom stopper most valued and esteemed.

*

What sort of world is created where we yet have no option,

But to bend our necks to a yoke to become anothers yoked oxen,

All our waking hours delivered to never-ending obligation,

Of earning keep, paying debt, poor and homeless, ever the motivation.

An endless treadmill of unceasing work to earn our daily bread,

Time managed to infinity till we suddenly discover we are dead!

*

So whatever happened to our dreamtime, that we all once had,

The mythology, characters from stories, heroic or just plain mad,

Must our dreams turn into those nightmares of reality TV,

Or can we take a moment to reflect on how it may be?

Perhaps first resurrect our poetry from cynical repartee,

Is Your Carpet Secretly Polluting Your Air? Discover the Surprising Solution "IndyWatch Feed National"

You may think your home is a safe haven from outdoor air pollution. But the truth is, hidden dangers are lurking in your home.

One of the surprising culprits? Your carpets.

Respiratory problems, allergies, and other health issues, especially in pets and children, are often caused by the off-gassing of dust, dirt, and other pollutants trapped in your carpets.

But dont worry theres a surprising solution to this problem: air-purifying plants.

Air Purifying Plants

Air-purifying plants work by removing pollutants from the air through the process of photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen while filtering harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene.

Some air-purifying plants are especially effective at tackling carpet pollutants, such as spider plants and peace lilies.

Researchers have found spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) are particularly effective in removing carpet pollutants. They are capable of absorbing and destroying toxins commonly found in carpets, such as formaldehyde, which is often released from adhesives and synthetic materials.

Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum spp.) are another popular choice for improving indoor air quality. These elegant plants are known for their ability to remove harmful substances like benzene, a chemical often found in cleaning products, paints, and furniture. Studies have shown that peace lilies can reduce benzene levels and increase air quality.

How to Improve Indoor Air Quality by Adding Air-purifying Plants

  • Choose the right plants: Its important to select indoor plants to remove pollutants from the air effectively. Spider plants, peace lilies, and bamboo palms are all excellent choices that can help tackle carpet pollutants.
  • Place plants strategically: Place them near your carpeted areas, such as living rooms or bedrooms, to benefit most from your plants. You can also place them near sources of indoor air pollution, such as furniture or electronics, to further enhance their effectiveness.
  • Keep plants healthy: Make sure your plants get enough light, water, and nutrients to stay healthy and effectively remove pollutants from the air. By doing so, they will continue to remove air pollutants effectively and contribute to a healthier indoor environment.

While air-purifying plants are an excellent addition to improving indoor air quality, they alone may not be sufficient in addressing all the sources of pollution.

Therefore, adopting a multi-faceted approach to maintaining clean and healthy indoor air is essential....

Bridge leads club to better times "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Ocean Grove Golf Club has a new bridge making it easier for golfers to travel around the course thanks to funding from the state government.

The bridge at the seaside club replaced the original old wooden decking with secure concrete and was unveiled on Wednesday morning, July 12.

Club president Sandy Cresswell said the new bridge links the middle fairways and makes it easier for people of all abilities to access both sites of the course.

Its been six years in the making, he said.

It will also enable a greater use of carts going forwards too.

Mr Cresswell said it felt sensational to have the bridge ready to use and thanked everyone for coming to its opening ceremony.

It was a reasonable turnout and there was probably close to 30 people there, he said.

The engineering has exceeded all the limitations and the bridge will be there for 100 plus years that we believe the golf course will be in existence.

Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said the bridge was made possible through the $38,000 state governments Golf Infrastructure Fund and would help more people get involved in the sport.

Victorians love their golf, and we want them to keep enjoying the sport and thats why projects like this are so important, she said.

Were building the sporting facilities our communities deserve, so everyone has the opportunity to get out there and get active.

Ocean Grove Golf Club is one of 18 golf infrastructure projects to receive funding support, with golf generating $883 million for the states economy and supporting 6900 jobs.

Barnaby bites back after sandwich-board encounter in Fadden

Stuart Robert MP's Robodebt legacy writs large on the ground of the Fadden By-election, such that glad-handing from Australia's "best retail politician", Barnaby Joyce, was required. Investigations editor Ross Jones reports.

BARNABY JOYCE seems a very sensitive man. Touchy even.

Not surprising  hes had a tough couple of years, with new mouths to feed and the rug so recently rudely pulled from the gravy train.

But hes a tough old nut and soldiering on is what you do.

A bit like Fermis Paradox  which asks, If there are aliens where the bloody hell are they?  the Fadden By-election has been very thin on the ground for Coalition MPs. Seems Opposition Leader Peter Dutton turned up once, but thats about it.

Stuart "Robodebt" Robert darent show his face because of the public derision that would ensue, so Barnaby stepped up to the mark, glad-handing in support of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tates favourite, Gold Coast Councillor and LNP candidate for Fadden, Cameron Caldwell.

There are few places more desperate than polling booths when the date closes in. Volunteers, many as mad as cut snakes, mill in search of action, thrusting leaflets at passers-by and waving at cars.

Into this fray barged Barnaby.

He and Cameron embarked on a minder-organised walk especially for TV only to be photo-bombed by a volunteer wearing a very minor party-logo...

Chicago Suburb To Pay Reparations "IndyWatch Feed National"

Chicago is crumbling to the ground. What do the politicians plan to do to fix the problem? Buy votes! The Chicago upper-middle-class suburb of Evanston, Illinois, approved a $10 million reparation package in 2019. The city will now hand out $25,000 to 140 black residents over the age of 18 who lived in the area between 1919-1969. I see it as like a test run for the whole country, stated Justin Hansford, head of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center at Howard University.

Of course, they have not properly funded the trial program. Initially, the committee agreed to use taxes from marijuana sales. When that wasnt enough, they took funding from real estate taxes. They have less than $1.2 million after years of searching for funding and will be hunting down the public for additional taxes. Lets do the math here $25K for 140 people is only $3.5 million. Do they need the extra $6.5 million to fund the committee and politicians? The greed from every angle is unbelievable.

Some activists are already complaining that the generous $25,000 free handout is not enough. One woman who received her free check during the initial trial told the New York Post that it is only a good start. She blew the entire thing on home renovations and it certainly didnt heal her ancestral wounds that she needed money to heal. Give an inch, and people will take a mile. Reparations are not economically feasible by any means and creating further inflationary conditions will hurt the dollar in general.

They are creating a racial divide between a small percentage of the country and everyone else. Only a small portion of Americans had ancestors that were slave owners, and even then, the law does not expect future generations to pay for the misdoings of the past. The nation is crumbling because we are divided on everything from race, religion, sexuality, and politics. We use every term to define ourselves other than Americans. The average person is struggling to make ends meet as living prices have become unsustainable. There will be a civil war if people are expected to give others their hard-earned mo...

Birth trauma awareness event coming to Lennox "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Birth Trauma Awareness Event coming to Lennox Head.

Over 450 Northern Rivers locals are coming together next week to support the conversation and raise awareness around perinatal trauma, with a free event at Lennox Head Cultural Centre on Tuesday 18 July at 10am.

During Birth Trauma Awareness week (running 16-22 July) national charity Hygieia Health Ltd has partnered with the local Lismore hospital team and birth community experts from all over Australia to create a community event designed to raise awareness about birth trauma, and importantly, discuss ways to prevent it.

Birth trauma is gaining a lot of focus at the moment with the NSW state-wide enquiry being established on 21 June 2023 (chaired by the Hon. Emma Hurst). Registrations to this event filled in record time, attesting to the seriousness of the issue, enabling those involved to strive for better care, better practices and better birth experiences for all birthing women.

The three hour live event at Lennox Head Cultural Centre on Tuesday has been pulled together in collaboration with Dr Tane Luna, Head of Obstetrics at Lismore Base Hospital, who is dedicated to supporting staff and birthing families to have positive birth experiences.

Incredible opportunity

The event will be focused on compassion, self-awareness, prevention and treatment of birth-related and perinatal trauma. This is a great opportunity for the community to gather together to share their stories, support birthing families who have experienced perinatal trauma, and raise awareness about the issues and the effect birth trauma has on mothers, babies and the wider community.

Participants will look at what needs to be done in the Northern NSW Health District, and beyond, to prevent birth-related trauma.

This is an opportunity for maternity consumers to have a voice and ask for chang...

A Tweed Coast and Estuaries Coastal Management Program will be progressed over the next 18 months, based on research and consultation with experts, stakeholders and community members.

The challenges faced by coast and estuaries

The management program aims to address the challenges faced by our coast and estuaries and will outline a framework to guide actions to help preserve the area for generations to come.

Councils Manager Sustainability and Environment Jane Lofthouse said coastal management was the planned, strategic management of coastal areas which takes into account social, economic and ecological systems and values.

We are at the early stages of developing a Coastal Management Program (CMP) for the Tweed Coast and estuaries, said Ms Lofthouse. This means we are building our understanding of what our community loves about the coast, what they would change and their ideas for the future.

Wildlife hospital in financial tailspin "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A couple of native marsupials get some care at the Byron Wildlife Hospital. Image supplied

The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital (BBWH) faces possible closure, after a NSW government panel recently deemed the facility did not demonstrate value for money in its funding application.

The rejection was supported by NSW Environment Minister, Penny Sharpe (Labor), with her office telling The Echo the decision was at arms length from the panel.

This is despite BBWHs proven expertise and experience in providing veterinary and rehabilitation services for native animals in the region, something that was also acknowledged by the government in its rejection letter to BBWH founder and CEO, Dr Stephen Van Mil.

Dr Van Mil said in a statement, We are extremely disappointed and surprised at the announcement, but native animals are the biggest losers in this decision.

Since operations began in January 2021, the hospital says over 4,000 animals have been treated, and over 1,000 in 2023 so far.

A BBWH spokesperson said, On February 6, 2023, the then NSW coalition government announced it had reserved funding of $6 million over four years for BBWH to continue its vital work.

At the time, Northern Rivers-based MLC, Ben Franklin (Nationals), said he believed it was nation-leading, and an exemplar of what can be done across the country.

A BBWH spokesperson said, In January 2023, the NSW Governments Expenditure Review Committee approved funding to be reserved for BBWH, based on a strategic business case.

Single-member council wards rolling out in Victoria "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Victoria is continuing the process of reviewing its local council wards, and since my last update in May, we have started to see proposed ward boundaries for those councils that are being forced to switch to single-member wards following legislative change in 2020 which mandated single-member wards for most urban councils and some regional cities.

Unsurprisingly, some of these single-member wards look completely ridiculous.

Some of these wards cover tiny areas, and the VEC has unsurprisingly had difficulty drawing wards of similar sizes, which will probably force more frequent redistributions over time. For some regional cities, maps have been proposed that involve wedges that dont represent any real community of interest within the council area.

In theory, the review process is meant to provide multiple options, but for the second wave of councils, every option involves single member wards. The independent process doesnt give participants any real choice.

For the first wave, 12 regional councils were reviewed. For each council, an option of electing all councillors at large was proposed, along with a model with 2-4 wards electing 2-4 councillors each, with all wards electing the same number of councils. In some of the councils, a single-member ward structure was also proposed. That review process has concluded, and the final report has been submitted to the Minister, but we dont know which options were chosen.

The second wave involves 16 councils, with the proposed ward boundaries being released for four councils a week over a four-week period. The first twelve are now out, with the last four due out next week.

In theory, theres some choice about which model is chosen. Seven of these councils have three different ward maps proposed. Four others have two options. For some reason Yarra only has a single ward map.

The council wards are meant to fall within 10% of the average enrolment per ward, but thats not much of a range when youre drawing such a small ward.

Unsurprisingly, in small councils you need to draw quite small wards. Most of the councils in the second wave have been regional cities, but proposed wards have been published for the Melbourne councils of Yarra and Frankston. The Yarra map is a glaring example of the absurdity of the system.

Ocean Grove is one of a kind "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Guest columnist Paul Gleeson moved to Ocean Grove 25 years ago and every day he is thankful for it. Read on to see why Paul thinks this place is so special.

Ocean Grove is a rare family find.

Im not trying to take anything away from its closest neighbours, such as the sea change of Barwon Heads or the acreage of Wallington. Both are fine if you have the cash. However, after living here for the last 25 years, OG has provided me with an exorbitant amount of good times. Way back,

American Methodists predicted the same.

In the 1880s, the Methodists, having already successfully set up a camp in New Jersey and calling it Ocean Grove, wanted to take the Lord abroad.

They found a charming seaside resort, on the eastern side of the Barwon River mouth along the Bellarine Peninsula. Here, they secured 222 hectares at 5 to 20 per lot, with a steadfast proviso and a ban on, the Manufacture or Sale of Malted Spirituous or in local lingo, no brew with your burger. This went on for, surprisingly, 140 years.

Traders tried to gain a liquor licence, but they lost the Supreme Court battles. Finally, the Victorian Civil Administration Tribunal intervened in 2014, and it was quashed.

I knew nothing of this when, in the winter of 1998, we decided to move here. To be honest, Ocean Grove was an easy pick with an affordable beach lifestyle. Even back then, $91,000 seemed like Id missed somethingthis is for the land and the house, right?

My friends and family werent sold though because this entailed leaving behind my childhood roots, the leafy Geelong suburb of Highton, and a long haul to work that would now be over 30 minutes. But off we went, buying and renovating a three-bedroom house. Within five months, the renovations were over, and it was summertime.

Ocean Grove beach has the perfect waves for learning how to surf. When the winds are northerly its a squeal fest. Theres freedom in failing and falling off the waves.

Dont worry, theres no judgement here, as the surfers that are all about the performance are around the corner at the Titanic 13th Beach.

Before, or preferably after the beach, the main street is a must. Recently, I overheard a young couple saying it had vibes. On the main street, youll walk past wetsuits, suits, beanies, bell-bottom jeans, and of course dripping boardies. All shopping needs are catered for, with eateries and coffee shops galore. See for yourself as you meander down one way and back up the other, or cruise through in your car.

Just dont enter the traffic from Orton Street (I saw a guy in a Chevy do this, that day his antics morphed locals into seagulls, and they jumped out as if in a musical, flapping in front of his rig).

As mentioned I have so many of my own Ocean Grove beach memories, heres one of them.

My son, who was eight at the time, went out on his G Board with me as his surfing sherpa in mid-Janua...

Friday, May 3:  Metro Theatre, Sydney Lic AA
Saturday, May 4: Croxton Bandroom, Melbourne 18+
Tuesday, May 7: Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide Lic AA
Thursday, May 9: Magnet House, Perth 18+

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Five years since the release of Sonder, TesseracT return with their new album War Of Being, released on September 15 via Kscope, showcasing perfectly why they remain pioneering leaders of the ever-evolving metal scene.

Drawing upon their previous albums strengths, War Of Being seamlessly combines the aggressive intensity of their debut masterpiece, One, the intricate song structures of Altered State, the songwriting prowess of Polaris, and the mind-boggling technicality of Sonder. The result is destined to be whispered about in hallowed progressive circles for years to come. It sets an impossibly high benchmark that few will ever surpass.

A concept album with AI generated cover art, War Of Being tells the gripping tale of ex and el, two souls stranded in The Strangeland after a catastrophic shipwreck. Here, they encounter a mysterious entity known as Fear, sparking a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. As you embark on your own individual journey through the album, prepare to unlock the deepest recesses of your own being.

War Of Being has been all encompassing for us since late 2019.  After I returned home  from filming P O R T A L S I found myself in such a deeply introspective headspace. The scale of work and reward from that project kind of set this up to be inevitable, says TesseracT bassist Amos Williams.

We simply had to try and see how far we could take a concept album with TesseracT.  Within these songs the band has given life to the themes and ideas that are personified within the characters of The Strangeland story. Its certainly been a catharsis and a way for me to explore the internal dissonance.

TesseracT stand firmly at the vanguard of the progressive movement that they themselves help shape. Their signature polyrhythmic grooves continue to push boundaries...

Grove home in one-goal thriller "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Ocean Grove held on for a thrilling one-goal win against fierce rivals Barwon Heads in round 13 on Saturday July 8.

The win kept Ocean Grove in second spot on the ladder while the loss saw Barwon Heads slip out of the top five, albeit only by a small amount of percentage.

The Grubbers jumped out to a seven-goal lead at quarter time and increased that by one at the half.

The Seagulls then launched a serious comeback with a 13 goal to eight third term to cut the deficit back to three, but Ocean Grove held on in the dying stages to run out 45 to 44 winners.

I think we just lost our way a little bit in the second half, we just werent playing our game, co-coach Candice Parker said.

We probably got sucked in a little bit to their style of game that they were playing and that ultimately cost us errors during the game.

While we did have plenty of turnovers, we just werent converting off those turnovers either.

Captain Emily Moroney was best at wing attack while Gemma Bell relished her promotion to A Grade with a fine game in defence. Goal attack Ashton OBrien was also a standout player.

Shes (Bell) been playing really well in B Grade so weve given her a couple of opportunities to come up and help out in A and she did a really good job and started a bit of drive coming out of defence, Parker said.

The Grubbers have been slow starters this season before eventually overpowering most opponents in the second half, but last Saturday was the opposite.

Weve been trying some combinations so while it might look like were not having great starts, that just might be the combinations were putting out there and making sure everyone gets experience on the court within the starting line up, Parker said.

But then also coming off the bench and starting too, so just trying to get experience into people and seeing how they respond.

Were a pretty versatile team so just trying to work out the best combinations is tricky as well.

Ocean Grove faces a tough run home before the finals starting with Torquay (3rd) tomorrow, then Geelong Amateur (1st), Modewarre (10th), Anglesea (5th) and Queenscliff (4th).

Youre going to have to play these teams in the finals so to be playing them in the lead up, if youre not winning you can then go back to the drawing board and go well do we need to do to improve to make sure we beat them in the finals, Parker said.

ROUND 13

A Grade: Ocean Grove 45 def Barwon Heads 44. Best: Emily Moroney, Ashton OBrien, Gemma Bell.

B Grade: Ocean Grove 52 def Barwon Heads 27. Best: Amelia Cunningham, Shelby Hackett, Dannie Hoiles.

Treeline rising in the alpine zones due to climate change "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

If you are a regular reader of Mountain Journal, you will know that I bang on endlessly about climate change impacts on the mountains: more intense fire regimes impacting snow gums and alpine ash forests, declining snow pack, longer droughts and all the rest of it. I probably dont spend enough time looking at what is happening in the true alpine zones above the tree line.

New research from Griffith University researchers outlines how alpine habitat is responding to climate change and bushfires.

Griffith Environmental Futures Institute Research Fellow Dr Brodie Verrall said the alpine area in the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains was mapped to observe and analyse the changes resulting from the warming climate between 1990 to 2000, 2010, and 2020.

Ultimately, warmer temperatures, longer growing seasons, declining snow cover and variable precipitation regimes have resulted in the rapid expansion of the woody vegetation, Dr Verrall said.

A key finding is that shrublines are advancing upslope. This indicates that new climatic habitat is becoming available with climate change and this is the first documented example of this phenomenon in the southern hemisphere. It means that, over time, we are losing the true alpine zone above the treeline where woody vegetation like trees and shrubs dominate.

This process may lead to the decline of relatively diverse alpine grasslands that currently occupy higher elevation areas.

The study found a slight treeline recession as a response to wildfire, which stunts the expansion of subalpine woodland cover and suppresses the upslope advancement of shrublines.

Wildfire may play an important role in regulating the encroachment of woody vegetation into alpine areas in the future, which would be an entirely new ecological process for this unique area

As Brodie notes: The changes are likely to have broad ranging consequences for fire risk management, carbon sequestration, water supply and biodiversity.

It was assumed subalpine vegetation would expand upwards into cooler alpine areas as the temperature rises but our data showed the snow gums expanded within the subalpine into the once treeless patches of the subalpine heathlands after the 2003 fires.

It is extremely important to understand what is happening in these alpine areas so we can prepare and predict how the warming climate and associated bushfires will impact these unique ecosystems in the future.

The good news:

A key surprising discovery is that subalpine woodlands are more resilient to bushfires than previously thought and they are expanding, however the results also showed this is increasing the amount of biomass which could exacerbate future fires.

The not so good news:

We found the cover of woody vegetation is increasing in the alpine, and we know th...

Nuclear power too expensive and slow to be part of Australias plans to reach net zero, study finds "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Guardian, Lisa Cox 12 July 23

Nuclear power should not form part of Australias plans to reach net zero emissions because it is too expensive and slow, according to the final report of a project that models how Australia might meet its 2050 climate target.

The Net Zero Australia report, a partnership between major academic institutions and the management consultancy Nous Group, says the federal government has a major role to play in accelerating all options that could make a material contribution to achieving net zero.

The release of the report comes days after the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, ramped up calls for nuclear power in Australia and a debate about removing the legislative ban on nuclear power in Australia.

The report includes major investment in batteries, solar, onshore wind, pumped hydro and transmission. Among renewable options, offshore wind was found to have the most uncertain pipeline, with the report concluding first power from offshore wind projects needed to occur in 2030.

But the report concludes nuclear power should not be factored in to net zero plans and states that to reduce renewable targets in the belief that nuclear will be deployed later at scale would create a material risk of not achieving net zero, or doing so at an excessive cost.

Richard Bolt, principal at Nous Group, said: Nuclear power should not be in our plans, because its too expensive and slow. .

The report was produced by the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland, Princeton Universitys Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, as well as Nous Group https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/jul/11/nuclear-power-too-expensive-and-slow-to-be-part-of-australias-plans-to-reach-net-zero-study-finds

Dutton wants Australia to join the nuclear renaissance  but this dream has failed before. "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

What stopped the nuclear noughties was a bigger problem: economics. Governments looking at nuclear saw the cost and time over-runs and decided it wasnt worth it.

in Australia, promises to create a nuclear power industry from scratch based on as yet unproven technologies and in competition with cheap renewables is simply delusional.

The Conversation John Quiggin 11 July 23

Last week, opposition leader Peter Dutton called for Australia to join what he dubbed the international nuclear energy renaissance.

The same phrase was used 20 years ago to describe plans for a massive expansion of nuclear. New Generation III plants would be safer and more efficient than the Generation II plants built in the 1970s and 1980s. But the ...

Exposing the lying claims of pro nuclear shill Zion Lights "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

2 Response to a July 2023 article by Zion Lights:  https://nuclear.foe.org.au/zion-lights/

In Australia, for the same investment we can get three times more firmed renewable power (generation, not capacity) in one-third of the time compared to nuclear. The cost difference between nuclear and renewables is so vast that renewables are still cheaper even when transmission and storage are costed in. Perhaps the comparison is more nuclear-friendly in the UK, but I strongly suspect renewables+storage+transmission is still cheaper given the obscene costs of Hinkley Point (approx. A$50 billion for two reactors).

Specifically in Lights latest article:

* Lights claims about the IPCC supporting nuclear power are dishonest, the IPCC maps out countless scenarios (including scenarios with nuclear reducing to zero) and its analysis of pros and cons is generally reduced to dot-points.

* Lights claims about a scientific consensus in support of nuclear power are dishonest, e.g. the Climate Council, comprising Australias leading climate scientists, states that nuclear power reactors are not appropriate for Australia and probably never will be.

* Ignores profound impacts of catastrophic accidents.

* Ignores the repeatedly-demonstrated connections between nuclear power and weapons (in the UK and elsewhere).

* Lights millions of lives saved meme is dishonest because it assumes nuclear displaces nothing other than coal.

* Nonsense about warm water around nuclear plants providing a haven for sea-life is dishonest, she surely knows that water intake pipes kill fish by the thousands. (And she should know something about Irish opposition to radioactive discharges from Sellafield.)

* Glib, ignorant and/or dishonest claims about high-level nuclear waste: spent fuel can be easily transported to another location, and even recycled. The UK has given up on reprocessing (a polluting, multi-billion-dollar disaster) and has made near-zero progress on a deep underground repository and has wasted billions of pounds of taxpayers mone...

Borrow, play, return "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Ocean Grove Primary School Year 6 student Sadie Dallman has started up a dog toy library in her home town.

The library, at Blue Waters Lake park in Ocean Grove, is stocked with toys that pooches can play with and are returned so that other canines have fun.

The idea came about through 11-year-old Sadies Rotary Community Project and the toys, such as balls, tug toys, frisbees and throw sticks, were donated by Petstock Ocean Grove.

The mantra of the dog toy library is Borrow, play, return.

I came up with this idea because as a dog owner myself I know the struggles of forgetting to bring a toy or ball to the park, Sadie said.

My dog Goldie always wants to play ball, now we can go there anytime and she loves it. This library is full of fun toys that both you and your dog can play with together.

Id seen one down at the beach and I know that lots of dog owners come down to Blue Waters Park.

The dog toy library has had a fantastic response with locals flooding social media with compliments for the resourceful youngster.

I did not expect that, I thought Id put it up on Facebook and then it would just be up there for people to see, Sadie said.

I saw a girl go grab a toy and play with it with her dog and the the toys have been used, theres a bit of mud on them and stuff

It makes me feel really good because its quite hidden away so its good that people have noticed it.

Even Goldie gets to play with the toys.

Weve taken her there basically every day and she knows where were going and shes very excited about it, Sadie said.

Queenscliff fire sparks investigation "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Police are appealing for information about a suspicious fire at a historic Queenscliff shed.

Victoria Police said they were investigating after a fire started in Queenscliff on Friday, July 7.

Investigators believe that a historic shed on Queenscliff Pier caught fire sometime after midnight, a spokesperson told the Voice.

No one was inside at the time, and the shed received minor damage. At this stage, the fire is being treated as suspicious.

Parks Victoria acting regional director Jodi Heath said the damage had occurred at the historic Waiting Shed on the Queenscliff Pier.

Weve been very disappointed to find vandalism damage to the historic Waiting Shed and Queenscliff Pier twice in the last three weeks and have reported the incidents to the police, she said.

Some decking boards have been burnt, sections of seating removed, holes kicked in timber lining of the Waiting Shed, and some smaller damage to the gate.

We estimate the cost of repair will be around $10,000. Wed really appreciate the local community staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious behaviour around the pier to the police.

A concerned local, who did not want their name published, said they hoped those responsible for the damage would eventually be named and shamed.

It should be called vandalism as that is what it is, they said.

The shed had some of its cladding removed and ripped up, and saw the destruction and removal of its seating, with a fair amount thrown off into the bay.

They also said the alleged vandalism had spread from Queenscliff to Point Lonsdale and that they were concerned about the regions safety.

Why dont the authorities put some form of security out at the sites of heritage buildings, they said.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dash cam footage of the Queenscliff fire is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Crown to pay $450 million after Federal Court ruling "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Two casino centred businesses will have to come up with a collective total of $450 million  in penalty payments over two years after AUSTRAC launched civil penalty proceedings against them for breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act).

The Court also ordered Crown to pay AUSTRACs costs.

Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth (Crown) have been ordered to pay up by the Federal Court of Australia.

The order comes after Crown and AUSTRAC (the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) filed joint submissions with the Federal Court of Australia in May 2023 for the payment of $450 million in instalments over two years.

Detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse

AUSTRAC is the Australian Government agency responsible for detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse of the financial system to protect the community from serious and organised crime.

Through regulation, and enhanced intelligence capabilities, AUSTRAC collects and analyses financial reports and information to generate financial intelligence.

As part of the settlement, Crown admitted that it operated in contravention of the AML/CTF Act, including that Crown Melbourne and Crown Perths AML/CTF programs were not based on appropriate risk assessments, did not have appropriate systems and controls to manage their risks, and were not subject to appropriate oversight by their Boards and senior management.

The serious nature of the breaches

The serious nature of the breaches meant that Crown allowed high-risk activities to take place in its casinos, without intervention, on an ongoing basis. For example:

  • Crown continued a business relationship with a major casino junket operator until 2021, although being aware of allegations the operator was connected to organised crime.
  • Crown failed to appropriately monitor billions of dollars in transactions (including international payment flows) which impacted its ability to identify and disrupt possible suspicious activity, and to report suspicious matters to AUSTRAC and law enforcement.
  • From March 2016 to December 2018, there were at least 75 suspicious incidents involving a total of around $23 million in cash, in a private gaming room which Crown Melbourne gave one casino junket operator exclusive access to.

Substantial and ongoing efforts

However, in settling these proceedings, AUSTRAC took into account the substantial and ongoing efforts undertaken by Crown to address the AML/CTF failings which were the subject of these proceedings.

Acting AUSTRAC CEO Peter Soros noted that AUSTRAC continues to work collaboratively with Crown. Our regulated businesses are supporting them in meeting their obligations to ensure they are equipped to help to protect Australias financial system fr...

Women in small business supported by $185,310 grant "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The NSW Farmers Association Government has been awarded $185,310 to support a program empowering women in the Lismore electorate to start and run successful small businesses through the Women in Business Networks (WIBN) grant.

This funding, granted by the NSW Government, will support the Empowering Women in Farming Businesses program to host up to 10 events across regional NSW to provide support to regional, rural and remote women in businesses.

The valuable contribution of women to agriculture

The program recognises the valuable contribution of women to the agriculture sector and aims to provide focused networking and skill development opportunities to further develop their confidence and support systems.

Other communities set to benefit from this project include Armidale, Lake Macquarie, Upper Hunter, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Newcastle, Central Coast, Eurobodalla, Orange, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga.

Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin MP said the WIBN grant would provide more economic opportunities to enterprising women in the Northern Rivers region.

Delivering more opportunities

Women make an outstanding contribution to the Lismore community and we are backing the NSW Farmers Association to deliver more opportunities for women to advance their agriculture business prospects.

More women in business means more innovation, new ideas and greater employment opportunities for people in the Lismore region.

The Minns Government is committed to closing the gender pay gap in New South Wales and this will only be possible if we have more women leading and owning businesses across this state, she said.

Despite the prevalence of small businesses in New South Wales, only one-third of these businesses are owned by women. The WIBN grant bolsters the NSW Governments commitment to support women in small business and entrepreneurs, as outlined in the 2022-23 Womens Opportunity Statement.

Making connections

The programs will help connect women in small business or those who are looking to start a small business with the right resources and support. They will include training, workshops, networking, peer support and industry mentoring.

Rebecca Reardon, Vice President of the NSW Farmers Association, said that women perform a critical function in many farm businesses and deve...

Blister pack recycling pilot begins "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A new pilot program to recycle medical blister packs kicks off today at pharmacies around the Geelong area.

Spearheaded by Rotary in partnership with Australian company Pharmacycle and local pharmacists, the pilot will place bins in 10 pharmacies in Geelong, Portarlington, Ocean Grove and elsewhere around the region.

Each pharmacy has received six bins, which are available for the public to drop in used blister packs.

Rotary district chair of environment and pharmacist Barb Sheehan, who conceived the idea for the program and has seen it come to fruition, said she was hopeful the community would get behind the initiative.

Im thrilled, absolutely thrilled; the pharmacies have all been really keen to participate and hopefully the public are really enthusiastic and will get plenty of packs back, she said.

The waste (from blister packs) is enormous, I know how much of it goes out from the pharmacies I work in, let alone whats sold in supermarkets and health food stores, and at the moment it all goes to landfill.

Its a big issue (but) theres a solution. There are people who want to recycle them but its the funding, whos going to pay for it, thats the issue, so hopefully well get enough data that we can seek further funding.

The pilot program is being funded by the City of Greater Geelong through a $10,000 environmental sustainability grant.

Id like to thank the City of Greater Geelong for supporting programs like this with their grants, Ms Sheehan said.

I think its wonderful. Its all about stopping plastic pollution going into landfill, getting something out of the plastic and foil that can contribute to a circular economy and make it a better place for us all to live.

Votes against the Voice will return us to White Australia

Voting against the Voice to Parliament is a promotion of racism and a revival of the White Australia policy of the past, writes Henry Johnston.

IM NOT SURE what shocked me the most: the cockroaches scurrying out of my dead mothers spare room, or finding an unframed oil painting hidden amidst the musty clutter of a rickety old cupboard.

There are nights when I wake at 3:00 A.M. in a funk, startled by the memories of that sad afternoon rummaging through bundles of frail and faded goods. But I slip back into a doze by thinking of the painting, which shimmers with light as effervescent as when delicate strokes first touched the small canvas, guided by the hand of an amateur artist, those decades ago.

The scene is sweet and simple. To the left of the frame, the fronds of three healthy coconut palms sway in the afternoon sea breeze. Dense foreshore scrub girdles the lower portion of their trunks, as cycad quatrefoils struggle through impenetrable undergrowth, seeking the sun. A sward edges toward a warm tropical white-capped blue, ruffled by the offshore wind. I can almost smell the rotting seaweed on the beach and recall a primal caution to look out for oyster shell clustered rocks underfoot.

I am drawn to four seabirds, hovering on the updraft, eyeing those rocks, scattered along a glimpse of sandy beach. The frigate birds, or man-o-war, soar above the bay in search of prey. Five smaller mates are suspended to the right of my sight and draw my gaze to a two-masted yacht, which completes the paintings foreground.

Four banks of whitish-grey clouds tower above the works dramatic locus,  a distant long island, offset by a curved rise that could be an extinct volcanic peak and dominating the low, distant horizon. And it is this faraway land that locates the artist on the mainland foreshore, painting his homeland.

Though small and almost unseen, the yacht is the artists conduit to the object of his longing  his country. If only he could be aboard, sailing toward the land almost hidden beneath pearly clouds. But his yearning is not to be fulfilled.

How do I know this? Because the painting was a gift to my mother for her kindness. And I remember the artists name, or nickname.

He was called Elvis. Young, good-looking, with longish bla...

Australian Sea Dumping Bill facilitates fossil fuel mining "IndyWatch Feed National"

Dr David Shearman is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide and a co-founder of Doctors for the Environment Australia. Here he comments the Australian governments consideration of legislation purported to safely capture carbon at the bottom of the sea but is really a cover to help the gas industry export more gas.

Governments around the world are promoting and subsidising carbon capture and storage (CCUS) to facilitate an increase in fossil gas mining. This will dash any hope of controlling world emissions at a time when there are deep concerns for climate change becoming uncontrollable.

Yet the Australian government and the fossil gas industry are driving huge new developments about which they perpetrate misinformation. Let us examine the Sea Dumping Bill.

Submissions to The Environment Protection (Sea Dumping) Amendment (Using New Technologies to Fight Climate Change) Bill 2023 (the Bill) are now being considered by the Department of the Environment and Water.

One section of the complex Explanatory Memorandum states the Bill would seek to promote the right to health by reducing the impact on human and environmental health of wastes and other matter, especially in regard to the export of carbon dioxide streams and the placement of such matter into the sea for marine geo-engineering activities.

The Bill acts by enabling a permit to be granted for the export of carbon dioxide streams from carbon dioxide capture processes for the purpose of sequestration into a sub-seabed geological formation.

Photo from Reuters: Bill will lead to more gas exports

Therefore, the Bill promotes the right to health under Article 12 of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) It positively engages this right by ensuring that activities allowed by the permits are regulated to minimise their impacts on human and environmental health, especially to the marine e...

How to address escalating violence in PNG "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

There is currently a serious problem with tribal fighting and gang violence in some of the Highland provinces of Papua New Guinea. In many areas, the violence surrounding the July 2022 election has essentially continued as a series of rolling fights. The most recent violent event to hit the news is a kidnapping of women and girls in Hela Province. They were brutally raped and subjected to other unnamed horrors before being released.

The problem seems so intractable, widespread and repeated that it is hard to know where to begin. The dominant outcome is impunity for perpetrators. Impunity is justified by reference to difficulties of access and transport, of communication, scarcity of government resources, and the considerable firepower of the feuding parties and gang members. All these are truly difficult logistical obstacles.

But, they are less insurmountable obstacles if we stop viewing the incidents as isolated events, and start seeing them as repeated patterns of behaviour. Paying attention to the systemic and cyclical nature of intergroup fighting highlights two much underused resources in the intervention armoury: timing of interventions, and networks with local communities.

In regard to timing, we use as an illustration a tragic recent case in Enga Province that personally affected one of us. Williams father was murdered, along with three other men, when he attended a peace mediation talk between two clans. This gave rise to immense pressure for payback from Williams clan, but there were many level heads within the clan of the deceased who realised that this could trigger an ever-increasing cycle of violence. They put enormous efforts into containing the forces crying out for revenge channelling their own resources, oratory skills and charisma towards this objective. Against all odds, clan and community leaders managed to stop the violence for 14 days while the haus krai and burial occurred. The immensity of this feat should not be underestimated.

The leaders knew that this temporary peace had an end date; they alone were not strong enough to permanently stop the violence. So they actively sought out the states police force to help them and, they hoped, take the burden from their shoulders by arresting the perpetrators of the original four murders. Unfortunately, the police did not intervene as hoped.

The force of those speaking for peace was eventually overwhelmed by those thirsting for war, and cycle after cycle of attack and revenge occurred, drawing in old conflicts from two or three decades ago. It turned out to be one clan who spoke for peace, against 18 others who mobilised for violence. At the height of the conflict, the state finally sent police and military personnel who were on the ground. They were quickly overwhelmed, as by that stage the violence had escalated...

BEST OF THE WEB: Cheats do prosper at the nation's expense "IndyWatch Feed National"

If higher education is about signaling academic attainment, then it helps no-one when the signal is scrambled. During the second half of high school, I learnt the phrase "affirmative action" and what it meant. I was in the US with my father he was in the country for work reasons and met some of his American colleagues' children. The system outlined to me did my head in. They recounted how personal essays plus things like volunteering, sport, and church played a large role in admission to one of the nation's better universities. I could no more imagine writing an essay telling the University of Queensland why I wanted to study law than I could imagine milking a bull. The reason was simplicity itself: I got straight As and couldn't stand the sight of blood, so medicine was out. At various points in multiple conversations, I attempted to describe the Australian system:

Can ChatGPT Defend the Long-term Use of Antipsychotics? "IndyWatch Feed National"

Last week, I asked ChatGPT to write an essay about the Mad in America website. That was a prelude to the questions I wanted to ask about the long-term effects of psychiatric drugs and the merits of DSM diagnoses. I do believe this is an inquiry, if AI is properly pressed, that can help highlight the evidence base related to antipsychotics, and the validity of psychiatric diagnoses.

This week I am focusing on antipsychotics. Here is how I am envisioning this chat: Imagine this exercise as a simulation of questions that could be asked of a prominent biological psychiatrist at a debate. Given that ChatGPT scours the internet and written texts for its replies, I presume that its answers will reflect, at least in large part, a discussion that is a reflection of mainstream beliefs (and thoughts.)

Or to put it another way, I want to see if I can make ChatGPT squirm.

Why Is This Freeway So Expensive? (Hint: Because Its Too Damn Wide!) "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

This article was originally published in City Observatory. It is shared here with permission. All images for this piece were provided by the author unless otherwise indicated.

The fundamental problem with the Oregon Department of Transportations (ODOTs) I-5 Rose Quarter project, and the reason why it has blown through its budget, is that it is really a massive freeway-widening project. The agency claims its just adding a couple of auxiliary lanes, but in reality, its doubling the width of Interstate 5 in a complex urban environment, and its plans for a much wider roadway are the principal reason the project, and its covers, are so expensive.

A Too-Wide Freeway

What no one seems willing to do is ask basic questions about the Rose Quarter. Is the project worth $1.9 billion? Does it even need to be that big and expensive? Isnt the skyrocketing cost and ODOTs growing fiscal crisis a signal that we should consider some other options?

The high cost and prodigious cost overruns of the Rose Quarter are directly related to the excessive width of the project, something that ODOT has gone to great lengths to conceal, characterizing the project as merely adding a single auxiliary lane in each direction. In reality, the project would essentially double the width of I-5 through the Rose Quarter, from its current 82-foot width to 160 feet (and in some places as much as 200 feet).

A brief chronology shows how ODOT staff have repeatedly concealed or obscured the width of the I-5 Rose Quarter project. Their initial 2019 Environmental Assessment presented a misleading and cartoonish freeway cross section that appeared to show that the freeway would be widened to about 126 feet.

City Observatory challenged these claims about the width of the freeway to the Oregon Transportation Commission in December 2020, and the commission directed the staff to meet with us to discuss the issue. The staff refused to answer any questions during this meeting, and instead later issued a written report obfuscating the actual width of the freeway.

In March 2021, No More Freeways obtained three different ...

Scott Ritter Investigation: Agent Zelensky Part 1 "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Part 1 of a highly revealing investigative series exploring the unlikely rise to power of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, by American author, military analyst, former US Marine Corps intelligence officer, and former United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) weapons inspector, Scott Ritter.

Scott Ritter says

As a former intelligence officer, Ive been wondering why has no one done an investigation about Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine? His rise to power, in my opinion, represents an incredible manipulation of world opinion that will go down in history as a classic case study in social psychological engineering: an ordinary comedian who came to power because he promised a long-awaited peace, who then dragged his fellow citizens into a bloody war that can only be described as a massacre. With the help of colleagues and experts with first-hand insights into Zelensky, I have poured over documents and video to produce a film that captures this investigation. This story has so many twists and turns that I had to break it into two parts. In the first episode, presented here, I will answer the question about Zelenskys improbable rise to power, and how the Ukrainian President accumulated his vast wealth, a sum that has only become larger since the war with Russia began. And, perhaps most importantly, why I decided to call this film Agent Zelensky. Watch:

More grumbling from Zelensky because NATO doesnt want direct war with Russia "IndyWatch Feed National"

By Drago Bosnic | July 13, 2023

In early October last year, Kiev regime frontman Volodymyr Zelensky called on NATO to launch a preemptive nuclear strike on Russia in order to rule out the possibility of using nuclear weapons. At the time, the mainstream propaganda machine tried everything in its power to present his words as allegedly misinterpreted, but since there is actual footage of it, well let you decide if he genuinely said so:

What should NATO do? Eliminate the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons. But what is important, I once again appeal to the international community, as it was before February 24: pre-emptive strikes, so that they know what will happen to them if used. And not vice versa wait for Russias nuclear strikes, then to say: Oh, you are so, well, keep it from us! Reconsider the application of their pressure, the procedure for applying, Zelensky said during a video conference with the Australian Lowy Institute.

While the aforementioned propaganda narrative tried to whitewash (a standard practice for virtually anything the Neo-Nazi junta does) his statement about these preemptive strikes by claiming these supposedly wouldnt be nuclear, this is openly implied in the comment itself. How else would it be possible to launch strikes against a nuclear power, much less the one with the worlds most powerful thermonuclear arsenal?

Why is this relevant now, approximately ten months later? Zelenskys unhinged commentary is deeply dividing for virtually all NATO members, as none of them wants to be destroyed in minutes for the sake of a corrupt Neo-Nazi regime. The ongoing NATO summit in Vilnius makes Zelensky look no less delusional, as he threw yet another tantrum, complaining that the political West is not doing enough because it doesnt want to make a firm promise to let the Kiev regime into NATO. Apparently, he is deeply frustrated with the regular pattern of the belligerent alliance making pledges, giving billions in so-called aid (over $170 billion, to be exact), promising to deliver F-16 fighter jets, while also expanding its military infrastructure in Eastern Europe.

Although NATO promised it will remove the Membership Action Plan (MAP) requirement for the Neo-Nazi junta, an...

Flawed IPEF Wont Solve Global Supply Chain Issues "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Ever since May 2023, when the 14-member Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) reached an agreement on strengthening the resilience of supply chains a crucial aspect of the frameworks second pillar an intense debate has been ignited within academia and media regarding its feasibility. For obvious reasons, scholars and commentators have delved into the potential ramifications and explored various perspectives on the matter. Some have scrutinized the practicality of implementing the agreement, while others have examined the potential economic and geopolitical implications it may entail. While the final text of the IPEF Supply Chain Agreement is yet to be unveiled to the media, initial indications have partially revealed its main features, suggesting the creation of comprehensive regulations and institutional mechanisms. The success of this agreement hinges on its implementation, with a particular focus on delineating tangible measures and possibly establishing specialized projects to propel further advancements.

Launched by US President Joe Biden in May 2022 during a Quad Summit in Tokyo, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) is a coalition of 14 member countries including India, Australia, Brunei, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The IPEFs declared objective is to establish a shared framework based on four key pillars: connectivity and digital trade, resilient supply chains, clean energy, and corruption-free fair trade. But the IPEF is generally viewed as the United States strategic response to its perceived retreat from the Asia-Pacific region during the Trump era, symbolized by the withdrawal from the ambitious Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), now known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Evidently, the IPEF is an assertive move by the Biden administration to counter Chinas increasing sway in the Indo-Pacific region. With the IPEF, the United States aims to expand its economic leadership in the region while advancing its foreign policy and economic interests. Through strategic partnerships with member countries, Washington seeks to enhance the development of supply chains and promote regional connectivity in both physical and digital realms. In doing so, the United States hopes to solidify its position as a dominant economic force in the Indo-Pacific region, asserting its influence and securing its long-term economic and strategic objectives.

As per media reports, the proposed agreement has suggested the establishment of three bodies: a Supply Chain Council, a Supply Chain Crisis Response Network, and a Labor Rights Advisory Board. Additionally, the United States has pledged to initiate technical assistance and capacity-building programs, such as digital shipping pilot projects and an IPEF STEM Exchange Program. Nevertheless, the global response from th...

TODAY. Zelensky mania ! But are cracks appearing in NATO? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Volodymyr Zelensky gave a stirring address to thousands of adoring fans in Vilnius, Lithuania.

He was at the top of his game which is whipping up enthusiasm for the coming grand military defeat of Russia.

The NATO summit, though full of adoration for the sainted Zelensky, was just a little less unified in its holy purpose.

Perhaps hole -ey purpose would be more accurate

You see while it is holy dogma now, that Ukraine must become part of NATO, -the hole in this dogma is becoming apparent. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg spelled it out: Ukraine can join NATO only when Ukraine wins the war against Russia because unless Ukraine prevails, there is no membership to be discussed at all.

But of course no problem!

But wait there is a problem Ukraine is not winning this war. That is a realisation that is slowly dawning on some European leaders.

There probably never has been such a media magician as Volodymyr Zelensky. He has put it over politicians, journalists, people world-wide, and especially the suffering people of Ukraine.

But will Biden, Macron, Sunak and the rest just dump Zelensky, when his magic bubble bursts, when its all over in Ukraine, and they are forced to accept a negotiated peace with Russia?

That eventual negotiation is better than the other alternative World War 3.

Indonesia Warns Nuclear Weapons Put Southeast Asia a Miscalculation Away From Disaster "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Indonesias Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi urged nuclear weapons states to join ASEANs regional nuclear-free zone.

The Diplomat, By Edna Tarigan and Niniek Karmini, July 12, 2023

Indonesias top diplomat warned Tuesday of the threat posed by nuclear weapons, saying that Southeast Asia is one miscalculation away from apocalypse and pressing for world powers to sign a treaty to keep the region free from such arms.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi raised the alarm ahead of a two-day summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which started later Tuesday in Jakarta. The agenda would spotlight Myanmars deadly civil strife, continuing tensions in the South China Sea, and efforts to fortify regional economies amid the global headwinds set off by Russias invasion of Ukraine.

Later in the week, the 10-nation bloc will meet Asian and Western counterparts, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and Chinese foreign policy overseer Wang Yi.

The U.S.-China rivalry is not formally on ASEANs agenda but looms large over the meetings of the bloc, an often-unwieldy collective of democracies, autocracies, and monarchies, with some members split over allegiances either to Washington or Beijing.

We cannot be truly safe with nuclear weapons in our region, Marsudi told fellow ASEAN ministers. With nuclear weapons, we are only one miscalculation away from apocalypse and global catastrophe.

In 1995, ASEAN states signed a treaty that declared Southeast Asias commitment to be a nuclear weapon-free zone, one of five in the world. However, Marsudi lamented that none of the worlds leading nuclear powers have signed on to the pact and called for renewed efforts to convince those states to sign up. The threat is imminent, so we can no longer play a waiting game, she said.more https://thediplomat.com/2023/07/indonesia-warns-nuclear-weapons-put-southeast-asia-a-miscalculation-away-from-disaster/

SCOTT RITTER: NATO Summit, a Theater of the Absurd "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

The scope and scale of the Ukrainian military defeat is such that the focus of many NATO members appears to be shifting from the unrealistic goal of strategically defeating Russia to a more realistic objective of bringing about a cessation to the conflict that preserves Ukraine as a viable nation state.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend the NATO summit. However, his demands for NATO membership will not be met.

Normalizing failure might best describe the best that NATO can accomplish in Vilnius.

By Scott Ritter, Consortium News, July 10, 2023

The unfulfilled goals and objectives from last years meeting in Madrid loom over the Atlantic military alliance. When the membership meets in Vilnius this week, normalizing failure might best describe the most that can be accomplished.

The leaders of NATOs 31 constituent member states have begun to assemble in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, for the alliances 33rd summit, an event that has come to symbolize the military organizations increasingly difficult task of transforming political will into tangible reality.

Since the Wales Summit of 2014, when NATO made Russia a top priority in the aftermath of the Russian annexation of Crimea, and the Warsaw Summit of 2016, when NATO agreed to deploy battlegroups on the soil of four NATO members (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland) in response to perceived Russian aggression in the region, Russia has dominated the NATO agenda and, by extension, its identity.

The Vilnius summit promises to be no different in this regard.

One of the major issues confronting the NATO leadership is that the Vilnius summit operates under the shadow of last years Madrid summit, convened in late June in the aftermath of Russias initiation of military operations against Ukraine.

Open letter urges the Federal Government to target university sexual violence "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Over 40 groups and individuals Australia-wide have signed an open letter urgently calling on the federal government for immediate action to address sexual violence in university spaces, in the face of escalating rates.

Good news on nukes: US cant sell Australia nuclear subs, Pearls an Irritations, By Brian Toohey Jul 12, 2023

The good news is the US cant sell Australia the three to five used Virginia class nuclear subs that the Albanese government has announced it will buy. Nor will it sell us any new ones.

The chief of US Naval operations Admiral Michael Gilday was recently reported from Washington as saying the US shipyards are only producing subs at a rate of about 1.2 a year. He says a minimum of two a year is needed to fill the Navys own requirements. Until then, he said, Were not going to be in a position to sell any to the Australians. When the Police Arrive! "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

When the police arrive at your door, it can be a stressful and intimidating situation. However, it is important to remain calm and handle the situation appropriately. Here are some steps to consider:

  1. Determine who is at the door: Before opening the door, it is a good safety habit to determine who is there. You can do this by looking out the window, using a peephole, or asking "Who is it?".
  2. Assess the situation: If you see that it is the police at your door, take a moment to assess the situation. Consider why they might be there, such as a wellness check, responding to a noise complaint, or conducting a neighbourhood survey. Understanding the reason for their visit can help you respond appropriately.
  3. Know your rights: It is important to understand your rights when dealing with the police. If the police have a warrant, you are required to open the door. However, if they do not have a warrant, you have the right to not open the door and can choose not to speak to them. It is important to note that if the police have a warrant, they can legally enter your home if you refuse to open the door.

Kicking off on 13 July and running until 17 August, the free rides program is expected to provide a boost to DiDis driver partners as well. With increased trip volumes, these dedicated drivers can seize greater earning opportunities, solidifying their financial foothold.

DiDi, having recently celebrated its fifth anniversary of operation in Australia, hopes that this groundbreaking initiative will alleviate the burden on numerous Melburnians. Many residents have found themselves exploring unconventional methods to cut costs, even contemplating side hustles such as rideshare driving to make ends meet.

Following the triumph of a similar promotion in Sydney, where users enjoyed a free weekly ride for 12 consecutive weeks, the spotlight now shines on Melbourne as DiDi rolls out this impressive campaign.

Were really excited to launch one of the largest giveaways that we have ever done in Melbourne. Our recent free rides campaign in Sydney was a huge hit giving away free rides across the city and helping customers save hundreds in the process, says DiDi Spokesperson Dan Jordan.

With the recent increase in public transport costs in Melbourne and ongoing cost of living crisis, this initiative is another opportunity for us to provide further value to both our riders and driver partners.

Weve seen demand grow significantly in recent months and were hoping this initiative can provide Melburnians with an alternative mode of transport that is financially viable. We also fully expect that this will benefit our drivers and help them by providing more trips on the platform and consequently increasing their earning potential, he says.

To redeem their free ride, riders simply need to enter the code FREERIDEM...
