Listings remain low, but... "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Listings remain low

Property for sale remained relatively tight across each of the major capital cities, and significantly lower than a year earlier in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth.

Listings have increased notably in Canberra and Hobart, after some stellar price performance in recent years.

Asking prices are higher over the year in most cities, but there has been some weakness in regional markets of late, including in 'lifestyle' locations such as the Sunshine Coast (which I can attest to personally) and the Mornington Peninsula (which I can't).

Dutton's defence of Berejiklian oozes Liberal contempt for women "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Dutton's defence of Berejiklian oozes Liberal contempt for women

Just when you thought the Liberals might be running out of new ways to demean women, along comes Opposition Leader Peter Dutton with his defence of disgraced former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Berejiklian was last week found by the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) to have engaged in serious corrupt conduct. This included failing to disclose her close personal relationship with former disgraced Liberal MP for Wagga, Daryl Maguire, and failing to report her knowledge of his involvement in corrupt dealings.

Dutton found himself caught between a rock and a hard place on the Berejiklian matter. He couldnt accept the ICAC findings without raising the spectre of pork barrelling by the previous Federal Government, for example, the sports rorts fiasco, the regional rorts, the pool rorts and the road rorts. As Ms Berejiklian herself observed  everybody rorts. Its not illegal, however, it is corrupt.

Dutton launched a novel defence of Berejiklians actions. Shed fallen in love with a dud, he declared. Shes not corrupt she just made a...

Race Riots and Culture Wars "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

What was it like?

What?

Parisduring the riots.

Were there riots?

Every country has its railroad tracks. And some people are inevitably on the other side of them. In Paris, poor people tend to live in the suburbs. One of them got killed by police last week. Those of us in the centre of town barely noticed.

Nationwide, the French seem to be having their own George Floyd moment.

Heres CNN:

Chaos, destruction and confrontations have led to curfews in some towns around the capital. Bus and tram services faced disruptions with a nationwide shutdown ordered for 9:00pm on Friday to try to stem another night of violence.

Areas within some of Frances major cities have erupted in violence for several successive nights after a teenager named Nahel Merzouk, reportedly of Algerian descent, was fatally shot by police  an incident caught on video.

More than 800 people were arrested the night of 29 June, as outrage continued to intensify. Merzouks death appears to have become a flashpoint for anger about racial inequality in France and claims of police discrimination.

Culture warriors

Meanwhile, racism is a big deal in the US too. There is a whole brigade of culture warriors ready to call it outstamp it outand duke it out. They see racism everywhere.

The Daily Beast: White Professor Disgusts Women Historians Conference:

A conference for female historians this weekend was plunged into turmoil when a prominent white academic speaking at the main event said her professional life would have been easier if she were black.

She was immediately called out for her blatantly racist remarks, and refused to apologise, let alone listen, to the reason why her remarks were horrifyingly wrong

And heres another click-baiting headline from something called BuzzLoving:

White men are a danger to society, says a member of San Franciscos reparations committee.

This past weekend, the US press reeled and railed over the Supreme Courts latest decision on universities race-based admissions programs. In brief, the court recognised that you cant discriminate in favour of one group (blacks, for example) without discriminating against another (Asians, for instance).

This anti-racist decision was immediately attacked asyesracism!

Fox News:

How Do You Hold onto a Bird in the Hand? "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

One of the best pieces of advice I received early in my financial advisory career came from a seasoned investment professional.

His words still ring in my ears

Vern, whenever you hear this five-word preface you cant go wrong buying, thats the moment when everything can go wrong.

Why?

Because once every man and his dog thinks something is a sure bet, cant fail, one-way trip to assured wealth, it means that all risk has been discounted out of the investment equationand thats when an investment contains its most risk.

The only thing thats guaranteed in this business is there are no guarantees.

There are two components to an investmentincome and capital gain.

Neither is assured.

For example, in April 2020, during the COVID meltdown, APRA Chairman, Wayne Byres, penned a letter to the banks, stating:

APRA expects ADIs [Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions] and insurers to limit discretionary capital distributions in the months ahead, to ensure that they instead use buffers and maintain capacity to continue to lend and underwrite insurance

As reported by IG Capital at the time

In response to APRAs letter; Macquarie analysts today said that the big four banks may be forced to either reduce or suspend their next wave of dividends completely.

Looking at a stressed scenario; Macquarie posits that bank losses could run as high as $2527 billion per bank. In this possible world, the banks ability to pay dividends (without raising equity) materially diminishes, it was noted.

Recent history has taught us that other sources of income are not set in stone either.

In 2010, with the RBA cash rate around 5%, who would ever have thought a decade later, money in the bank would earn next-to-nothing?

Who could have anticipated how work-from-home would upset the commercial property applecart?

With higher vacancy levels, per-square-metre rent rates have come under pressure.
Landlords have suffered a double whammyfalling rental income and lower property values.

Nothing is ever absolutely guaranteed

Things happen that can change market dynamics.

And what was once placed in the category of you cant go wrong buying, suddenly shifts to how did we get this so wrong?

Of the two types of investment returns, income is perceived as the bird in the hand, while growth is the two in the bush.

So, how do you increase the odds of holding onto that bird in your hand?

With the guidance of someone who has been there and done that.

This is an unashamed plug for my good mate, Greg Canavan

Ive been in this business for 37 years and have seen a lot of investment professionals.....

POEM: An Ode to Senator Thorpe "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

POEM: An Ode to Senator Thorpe

This poem is an *IA Writing Competition (fiction category) entry.

AN ODE TO SENATOR THORPE

It's a new generation and pronouns are the rage,
Plus a new batch of pollies have taken the stage.
Of all of them though, there is who stands out,
And it's Senator Thorpe, without a shadow of doubt.

On the coattails of the Greens, she came by Harley to town,
Championing minorities and sticking it to the Crown.
Some people are asking, Is she barking mad?
In fairness it was Bolt and Sky News who elected to give a platform to her dad.

Now widely criticised for making a fuss,
But imagine your own father throwing you under the bus!
Evicted from a strip club with verbal abuse her great crime,
Some may just argue she's ahead of her time.

But how was Barnaby Joyce, commenting with presumption,
About someone else's alcoholic consumption!
Man-handled by police  I've been there myself,
If politics was about realness, she'd be top shelf.

Everyone seems to have had a go at ripping her down.
But she's not one to mess with how about that Van clown?
On the Parliament's stage she told Pauline where to go,
But there are just so few who haven't wanted to, though.

To their discredit, no sisters have paused the great goad,
Easier to paint her crazy it serves their cause so.
Condemned by so many and told to go take a hike,
In fairness, with chance, I'd ride a great Martin bike!

Neither poised nor polished, but should she need be?
A woman after my own heart you get what you see.
She is not fit for parliament, says Van like white Sir.
Or could it be the great halls, aren't ready for her?

Running scared and desperate to stop her calling them out.
Perhaps running scared of the fact she is gaining some clout.
Who would actually write this, I hear the hacks say,
It's not even fiction  burn the rulebook, she'd say.

A controversial poem, perhaps, but let it be known,
Senator Thorpe  this is an ode.
Let all young girls take a sip from her cup,
If only we were all a bit more Lidia as we grew up.

The EU risks repeating another vaccine apartheid with new deals with vaccine companies "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

July 4, 2023: Reuters reports that the European Commission has contracted several European vaccine production companies, such as Pfizer, to reserve capacity to make the EU up to 325 million vaccines a year in case of another future global health emergency. The contracts also obligate the companies to be adequately responsive to crises, including by stockpiling supplies where necessary.

The announcement of these contracts has been met with backlash from members of the Peoples Vaccine Alliance advocating for equitable access to medicines who claim they threaten to repeat the vaccine inequity experienced during Covid-19. As of June 2023, only 35% of people in low countries have received a Covid vaccination compared to 73% in high income countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO) dubbed this inequity a vaccine apartheid which led to large-scale, preventable deaths in the global South.

The EUs announcement of its vaccine contracts comes alongside discussions of a Global Pandemic Agreement by the WHO. The agreement aims to avoid a repeat of the "catastrophic failure" of the Covid pandemic and includes a commitment to reserve up to 20% of any tests, vaccines or treatments for low-income countries in a future global health emergency. However, there are concerns that inward-looking measures to protect supply lines, such as the EUs, threaten the Global Pandemic Agreement and undermine initiatives to ensure equitable access to medicine.

News Corp condemns ICAC and stands for corruption

With the release of NSW ICACs findings on Gladys Berejiklian, an editorial in The Australian has condemned the Commission and made a bold stand for corruption, writes David McIlveen.

LAST WEEK saw the official opening of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the release of the long-awaited findings from the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) on former Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Quite a week.

It makes for a useful occasion to reflect on corruption in Australian politics and the media, and to point out the people politicians, publications and hacks that line up to side with the guilty, attack the accountability body, and provide every lame excuse to downplay or dismiss the findings of corruption. Presumably in hopes of weakening the public unity in condemning something so clearly against its interests.

The few senior current and former Liberals that provided comment on the findings were as predictable as they were vacuous and unprincipled in their responses, and dont deserve any serious treatment. Their contempt for evidence and ICACs hard work and careful deliberation is fitting with the Liberal brand. Just let us use the Treasury as our own private bank account, you can hear them thinking.

The funambulist nature of the Murdoch press is always a little more interesting, however, as its forever obliged to try to present itself as for the people to its limited readership, while simultaneously promoting the interests of the Liberal Party and its associates.

Lets look at The Australians editorial position on the NSW ICAC findings, for...

Building pipeline struggles

Building approvals bounced +20.6 per cent in May to 15,032, possibly clearing off an Easter backlog.

House approvals were fairly flat for the month, and at -15 per cent lower than a year earlier continue to trend lower.

The bounce was overwhelmingly due to an increase in unit approvals in Sydney in this lumpy data series, with most other capital cities still trending lower.

This was a welcome monthly increase, although around 15,000 building approvals in a month is still a relatively weak figure overall.

Stock for sale falls further "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Dearth of stock continues

Rental vacancies remained generally low in June according to CoreLogic, with several industry participants noting a recent demographic shift back towards the inner cities.

Capital city vacancy rates remained at a record low of 1.1 per cent.

The number of properties listed for sale also continued to decline across the combined capital cities, to now sit some -26.4 per cent below the 5-year average.

This has clearly underpinned the market, with home values increasing by +1.1 per cent in June and +2.8 per cent for the June quarter.

The quarterly increase was driven by a +4.9 per cent increase in Sydney, and a +3 per cent increase in Brisbane, though recent sentiment suggests something of a cooling in these markets.

Australian Vintage [ASX:AVG] Shares Jump 10% as It Undertakes Strategic Review "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Australian Vintage [ASX:AVG], the company behind popular wine brands Tempus Two, McGuigan, and Nepenthe, has announced the initiation of a strategic review to explore options to unlock shareholder value.

Investors were relieved at the news, with the share price jumping by 10% today, trading at 43 cents per share.

The decision comes in light of the challenging business environment faced by AVG, including inflationary impacts, pressure from consumer trends, and tough market dynamics affecting pricing.

The market has reacted to these challenges, with AVGs shares declining by nearly 40 % over the past year. While the company experienced a surge in demand during the pandemic as consumers shifted to at-home consumption, reaching a 13-year high of 89 cents between March 2020 and June 2021 it remains a far cry from the highs witnessed in the early 2000s.

Australian Vintage announced today the beginning of a strategic review by corporate advisory firm E&P to explore options to unlock shareholder value in a challenging environment.

A Brief Guide to Product Marketing "IndyWatch Feed National"

Effective product marketing is crucial for the success of any company in todays competitive business landscape. Whether youre looking to sell digital products or provide services, the principles of product marketing can greatly assist you in increasing sales, establishing a trustworthy brand, and developing customer loyalty.

Regardless if youre running a small business or a large corporation, its important to have a solid understanding of product marketing.

In this blog post, we will be diving into the world of product marketing. Well discuss what it involves, how its different from general marketing, the important tasks product marketers handle, and some effective strategies to boost your products success.

How is Product Marketing Different from General Marketing?

Simply put, product marketing is about specificity. Unlike general marketing, which focuses on building broader brand awareness and customer acquisition, product marketing zooms in on a specific product or service. It aims to effectively communicate the value proposition, features, and benefits of a product to the target audience. This is done with the hopes of influencing customer behaviour and increasing product sales.

Here are the key differences between product marketing and general marketing as a whole:

  • Focused audience targeting

Product marketing zeroes in on a specific group of consumers with the aim of understanding their needs, preferences, and pain points. This enables product marketers to create tailored product campaigns that resonate with their target demographic.

  • Product-specific marketing

Through product marketing, you can craft compelling narratives that highlight the unique features, benefits, and value proposition of a specific product. Product-specific marketing aims to differentiate the product from competitors and showcase its particular advantages to the target audience.

What Does a Product Marketer Do?

Product marketers often wear multiple hats and have to work with several other departments within a company.

Here are some of the key responsibilities of product marketers:

  • Market research and cross-functional collaboration

Product marketers conduct thorough market research to understand the target audience, industry trends, and competitive landscape. They gather valuable customer insights, analyse market data, and identify opportunities for product differentiation.

To create a comprehensive go-to-market strategy, product marketers also collaborate with cross-functional teams, including the product management and sales teams. An effective go-to-market strategy might involve defining target segments, setting pricing strategies, identifying distribution channels, and planning promotional activities.

  • Developing product positioning and......

Gladys Berejiklian and Daryl Maguire a latter-day Bonnie and Clyde "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Gladys Berejiklian and Daryl Maguire a latter-day Bonnie and Clyde

The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption determined that former Premier Gladys Berejiklian had engaged in serious corruption along with her lover, Daryl Maguire. Michael Galvin explores the partnership of NSW's infamous corrupt couple.

THERE SHOULD BE a special place in Australian history for Daryl Maguire, Gladys Berejiklians Hokis. The nation owes a debt of thanks to the NSW ICAC for preserving so many recordings of Dodgy Dazza speaking on the phone to his lover, former Premier Berejiklian.

But first, a couple of thoughts about the disgraced former NSW Premier herself.

Whether or not Berejiklian was as corrupt as Maguire is an open question. But when it comes to his many illegal schemes to make money on the back of his position as a NSW MP, it is the view of this writer that Berejiklian cannot claim total innocence.

Why not? Because she had motive. It was in the former Premier's interests for Maguire to make as much money as he could. It is clear from her own words on the phone to him that she wanted and was looking forward to enjoying overseas holidays and other expensive lifestyle choices with him. Yet Maguire kept telling her how poor he was, how much he was in debt, how much his children were costing him and on and on.

Yes, Berejiklian told Maguire that she was quite capable of covering her own travel and other expenses. From the text messages, it appears Maguires ego was fragile and insecure and, therefore, Gladys knew he had to make money in order to have the life together to which they aspired.

So, Berijiklian had motive and she was not stupid...

Why doesnt she just leave? Why did you stay? "IndyWatch Feed National"

We hear it said often, especially when there is a high profile domestic violence case in the media.

When  high profile cases of violence against women are in the media, the  air waves fill with outrage, calls to action, compassion, political responses  and inevitably someone somewhere will say: Why didnt she leave? and Why did she go back?.

Those of us who work in  womens domestic  and family violence shelters hear her stories and witness her tears and sometimes are asked to be her voice at a time when just taking the next breath takes a huge amount of energy.

This poem is dedicated to  those women  who are living in domestic violence or have come through it and have had those words asked of them :

Why didnt you just leave?

Im sorry I cant hear you

what did you say?

My ears are blocked and heavy

From  vicious words that have been  hurled my way

There used to be sweet words and promises

and whispered romance in my ears

I now I find myself wondering

Can ears become blocked with all those tears?

Escaping the ScapeGoat trap "IndyWatch Feed National"

Being a family scapegoat refers to a role or dynamic within a family system where one person is consistently blamed, criticised, or targeted for the familys problems and dysfunctions. The one who receives the eye rolls, plaintive sighs, admonishments and fault finding. The scapegoat can serve to unite a non-communicative family as they highlight the flawed member and extrapolate on their faults whilst not examining their own.

The scapegoat is often seen as the troublemaker or the overly sensitive, too emotional or unreliable one responsible for all the familys issues, while other family members are idealised or considered unflawed and non-problematic by comparison.

This unhealthy family dynamic can have a profound impact on the scapegoats well-being and self-esteem as the scapegoat is frequently the target of unfair accusations, verbal abuse, or emotional manipulation within the family.

They may be blamed for things that are not their fault, held responsible for the actions of other family members, or constantly singled out for their perceived flaws or shortcomings.

For example if the scapegoat speaks out about fa...

Honduras risks losing $11 billion in ISDS case after repealing laws created by authoritarian government "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

June 30, 2023: US company Prspera has launched a $11 billion dollars Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) claim against Honduras for repealing a controversial law.

ISDS is a mechanism within some trade agreements which enables foreign (but not local) investors to sue governments for millions and even billions of dollars of compensation if they can argue, among other reasons, that a change in domestic law or policy has reduced the value of their investment.

Honduras law, passed by corrupt officials of the post-coup Honduras government, allowed foreign investors to establish Economic Development and Employment Zones (ZEDE). ZEDEs are essentially private cities outside of the jurisdiction of the government which grant investors the power to create their own security forces, governance systems, regulations and separate courts.

The recently elected democratic government has repealed the ZEDE law to ensure that democratic governance applies to these zones. Despite strong public support for the repeal, and the concern over the threat of ZEDEs to democratic protections, Honduras risks losing nearly two-thirds of its national budget if Prsperas case is successful and will have to spend millions defending the case.

You can read more about this case here, or about the dangers of ISDS in AFTINETs updated briefing here.

The obsession with surpluses "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

The Federal Government has posted the first actual surplus for 15 years as distinct from a projected surplus with celebratory coffee mugs just before covid struck.

The essential lesson is not to get stuck on the mantra of surplus good, deficit bad and that that is the be-all and end-all of budgetary (or fiscal) policy. Governments are not like households. They do not have to keep spending within the bounds of income or go bankrupt.

And besides, as every mortgage holder knows, some debt is a good because it generates wealth in the long term.

The Government should not be congratulated on delivering a surplus (of $19 billion). Rather it should be congratulated on doing fairly well the other important elements of budgetary policy: tweaking according to whether the economy is inflationary, on one hand, or sliding into recession on the other; redistributing wealth in measured ways; promoting good economic activity and discouraging bad activity by applying taxes or tax breaks; and delivering services that people might otherwise not be able to afford.

A surplus right now is good, not because surpluses are good per se, but because the economy is in an inflationary mode which needs braking. It is better that the sledge-hammer of high interest rates does not do that alone.

Similarly, when then Treasurer Josh Frydenbergs black surplus coffee mugs turned red with embarrassment after covid struck he should not have been condemned for running a deficit because deficits are bad per se. Rather, he should have been applauded for tipping money into households when it was needed.

If there had been no covid and Frydenbergs surplus had eventuated, there still would have been good grounds for saying his fiscal policy was deeply flawed. Taking the wrecking ball the government service and vast hand-outs to mates and marginal seats for projects of dubious economic merit are no way to run fiscal policy. It was the equivalent of a household borrowing to finance holidays rather than a house.

From the 1990s, the Coalition successfully convinced much of the broader community that its obsession with surpluses was warranted. However, that obsession disguised a more passionate, but flawed, agenda: that of reducing government spending and thereby...

Britain's SAS hosted a serial killer "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

In 2020, the Brereton report found that the Australian SAS had murdered 39 Afghan civilians and committed war crimes. The British government is finally reviewing the actions of its own special forces in Afghanistan, and it looks like the death toll is at least twice as high:

Eighty Afghans may have been victim of summary killings by three separate British SAS units operating in the country between 2010 and 2013, lawyers representing the bereaved families have told a public inquiry.

[...]

Afghans were often killed after allegedly producing weapons when separated from their wider family by SAS soldiers, but there were five incidents where the number shot dead exceeded the number of weapons found.

The fresh claims are cited in a document submitted by the law firm Leigh Day, based on previous Ministry of Defence court disclosures, to a new public inquiry into allegations of war crimes committed by SAS soldiers in Afghanistan.

And these are the murders they have admitted to. There'll be a lot more they've covered up and kept secret.

Appallingly, nearly half the admitted death toll is due to a single soldier, who had a policy of murdering all "fighting-age males", regardless of whether they posed any threat. Which seems both genocidal, and the actions of a straight-up serial killer.

In Australia, the Brereton report got to the truth, and led to consequences. An entire SAS unit was disbanded for its crimes, and criminal trials are imminent. In the UK, with its long history of official coverups, and with politicians trying to "draw a line" under historic crimes to prevent embarrassment to the power structure, I don't think we can have any confidence that anything will be done. Britain will not provide justice for its crimes. Instead, these war criminals and their political accessories and co-conspirators will have to be sent to The Hague.

"Lets lynch the landlord" as policy "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Last month the Greens released their tax policy, was was basicly eat the rich. Over the weekend they followed it up with their rental policy. The short version? lets lynch the landlord:

Rents controls would limit how much landlords could increase the rent by each year. The cap would never be higher than 3 percent, which is the upper limit of the Reserve Bank's inflation target.

Landlords would not be allowed to raise rents beyond this limit unless they have made substantial improvements to the property.

The controls would also be property based rather than tenancy to prevent landlords putting up the rent between tenants.

A Rental Warrant of Fitness would guarantee all rental homes were safe, warm and healthy to live in.

A national register of all landlords and property managers would keep track of how many properties were rented, ownership, how much rent was charged over time, and compliance with the Rental Warrant of Fitness.

Less headliney, but also important: relaxing Labour's austerity limits on Kainga Ora, allowing them to build even more state houses. Which would restore some balance to the rental sector.

Naturally, landlords hate it, making their usual threat to sell up. Which is a feature, not a bug, because unless they turn arsonist, the houses will still be there. They'll just be parasite free. Economists also hate it, but given that their "discipline" is basicly making excuses for the rich, they would. And as with MMP, the Wal Footrot principle applies: want a reason to vote for it? Just look at the people telling you not to.

The Eastern Star. "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The Eastern Star.

I call that star in the early morning sky,

The Eastern Star..for know not I,

The names given to stars of the night,

Save those sung in songs of delight.

I confess I know not, so many things,

Like the names of public holidays,

Peoples names, and sundry things,

Of deep regret I have to sling..

But I do know the difference,

Between what is intoned,

As a lonely life against a life alone.

Myself, if I can but quote;

Married with children, not to gloat,

But to example a situation done,

Yet to me, I live in this life alone.

For there is one part of my soul,

I would not like to have others know,

Of thoughts I think nor ideas I sow,

Not for want of any scant disgust,

But rather because I have so little trust,

Or faith that the public mob (scuse my scorn),

Would not banter and laugh to so forlorn,

At my silly dreams and colourful plans I lay,

Should ever such come to the light of day..

So best I live in this life alone,

With all my angels, demons and dreams convolved,

Rather than see myself be publicly scold,

And let what is personal, not obscure personality,

Be the measure of my worth in social equity,

And so leave The Eastern Star shine down on me.

Northern Territory government steps up support fracking industry "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Contributed by Adam Carlton

A new law in the northern Territory which allows fracking companies exploring for gas to start selling before they go through the project approval process is designed to turn this process into a rubber stamp. This law was introduced into the NT parliament in October last year. The state government hopes that this will give rise to the growth of the industry.

The new law, in the form of an amendment to the Petroleum Act, was approved by the parliament last year. Now the claim that the recommendations that the Pepper inquiry has been met is used to encourage companies to make use of the new law. This is a lie. Even though the inquiry had been meant to be a rubber stamp, it did raise a list of needs before a go ahead can be considered. These needs have not been covered, and the green light was given in May.

NT Environment Centre director Kirsty Howie said allowing the sale of exploratory gas before the recommendations were fully completed appeared to weaken the governments commitment to the recommendations of its own Pepper inquiry. Appeared, In this context using the word appeared is a polite way that it has.

Photo by Tristan Hooft/ABC News: Kirsty Howie

Wed been promised by the Northern Territory government that the industry would not move to production until numerous safeguards were in place, she said.

That includes things like offsetting all life cycle emissions produced in Australia from fracking and declaring water allocation plans in the regions to be affected.

Locals opposed to fracking and First Nation communities are not accepting this and gearing up to step up a battle that has already been going on for years. This is especially true for the Beetaloo Basin. Its big underground aquifer is threatened. A dozen test wells have already ben build here. Local community and first Nation opponents, intent of reversing this, have been joined by Northern Territory and across Australia pro-environment organisations.

In which the pond continues the Monday tradition of Caterist blather and the Major out for his usual march ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

In these troubled times, the pond often finds itself in the company of apostates, dissenters, heretics, deserters, traitors and nonconformists who've abandoned their old ways ...

So the pond was reading a rant by former Republican Mike Lofgren, There's no such thing as a conservative intellectual only apologists for right-wing power.

It's a long rant, but the thesis was simple enough, and summarised what the pond had learned over the years is what the reptiles at the lizard Oz yearn for day after day, month after month, year after year ...

1. A desire for hierarchy and human inequality.
2. The only acceptable society is based on Christianity.
3. We must obey tradition.
Along the way there were some bon mots ...

Modern conservatives are hag-ridden by demons the fallen state of man, the hopeless decadence of secular humanism, the imminent collapse of Western Civilization (a term always capitalized).

And - spoiler alert - if the pond might cut to the chase and the conclusion ...

...It is not too much to say that conservative apologetics is a vast rhetorical structure that purports to say one thing when it means another. Economic freedom means the right to exploit one's natural inferiors; religious freedom equates to imposing religion on sinful unbelievers; defense of tradition means censoring and rewriting history, the better to make the present seem like the culmination of conservative ideas.
Ideas those may be, but the product of genuine intellectuals those who employ critical reasoning and approach facts honestly they are not. Ever since the Enlightenment, there has been a perpetual battle, a war of words, between those who would make the world a little freer, a little healthier, a little fairer and a little saner, and those who are viscerally repelled by such markers of secular progress. We see the practical consequences of this conflict everywhere, from the ruined cities of Ukraine to our own barbarously retrograde state legislatures. It is necessary for each of us to know which side we are on in the intellectual struggle of this chaotic century.

In much the same way as a Catholic turned atheist, or vice versa, there's nothing like an apostate, and of course the whole of The Bulwark is full of reformed apostates of the Tim Miller kind, busy offering up tracts such as DeSantis Video Brags That His Policies Literally Threaten Trans Existence.

A Pacific Mobility Index to strategically guide the Pacific Engagement Visa "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

In this blog, we introduce the Pacific Mobility Index (PMI) as a tool to guide the implementation of the revolutionary Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV) under its proposed annual 3,000 visa lottery ballot system.

Whilst the PMI we are proposing is currently only a concept, it promotes the strategic allocation of visas and aligns its rationale to the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. It recognises the sensitive competing priorities in the region, and promotes regional agreement that aims to avoid tension. The PMI incorporates Australias own priorities for considerations of climate vulnerability and low access, and aims to strengthen the delivery of these highly prized visas.

The PEV is a first for Australia. It is a new visa that targets increased access to permanent migration pathways specifically for citizens of the Blue Pacific. In the interest of advancing and strengthening Australias ties, relationships and people-people connections to the Pacific, wider collective consultation in the region should foreground the successful delivery of the PEV.

Should the PEV roll out as initially announced by the Albanese government, citizens of 12 eligible Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste, who have access to the internet or have family members that are technology savvy, will be able to make an online pre-application for a PEV. Four members (aside from Australia and New Zealand) from the apex regional body the Pacific Islands Forum the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Niue are not included. Eligible citizens will have the opportunity to enter a ballot, at a nominal non-refundable fee of A$25, to be randomly selected and then invited to apply for the visa. This is a tested and proven system that New Zealands Pacific Access Category Resident Visa has successfully delivered exclusively to citizens of Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tonga and Fiji.

When Labor first announced the PEV in opposition, it said that the 3,000 visas would be distributed on a pro rata basis. More recently, the government has said that visas would consider several factors including population size, di...

What are PFAS, and why are these forever chemicals showing up in drinking water? An environmental health scientist explains "IndyWatch Feed National"

Youve probably been hearing the term PFAS in the news lately as states and the U.S. government consider rules and guidelines for managing these forever chemicals.

Even if the term is new to you, chances are good that youre familiar with what PFAS do. Thats because theyre found in everything from nonstick cookware to carpets to ski wax.

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are a large group of human-made chemicals currently estimated to be around 9,000 individual chemical compounds that are used widely in consumer products and industry. They can make products resistant to water, grease and stains and protect against fire.

Waterproof outdoor apparel and cosmetics, stain-resistant upholstery and carpets, food packaging that is designed to prevent liquid or grease from leaking through, and certain firefighting equipment often contain PFAS. In fact, one recent study found that most products labeled stain- or water-resistant contained PFAS, and another study found that this is even true among products labeled as nontoxic or green. PFAS are also found in unexpected places like high-performance ski and snowboard waxes, floor waxes and medical devices.

At first glance, PFAS sound pretty useful, so you might be wondering whats the big deal?

The short answer is that PFAS are harmful to human health and the environment.

Some of the very same chemical properties that make PFAS attractive in products also mean these chemicals will persist in the environment for generations. Because of the widespread use of PFAS, these chemicals are now present in water, soil and living organisms and can be found across almost every part of the planet, including Arctic glaciers, marine mammals, remote communities living on subsistence diets, and in 98% of the American public.

The Environmental Protection Agency issued a health advisory in 2022, warning about their risk in drinking water even at very low levels. PFAS maker 3M, facing lawsuits, announced a...

Alexis Tsipras resigns: lessons for progressives "IndyWatch Feed National"

Following Greeces latest election, after which Alexis Tsipras announced his resignation, a journalist asked me: What conclusion do you draw from this situation? Here is my answer:

The crucial conclusion to be drawn is that radicals are never welcomed for long into the club of the powerful, even if they are willing to betray their principles to serve the powerful well. Tsipras has every reason to feel badly treated by the establishment.

Having imposed on the people of Greece, efficiently and some would add ruthlessly, the policies that he was elected to oppose, he succeeded in stabilising Greece (at the expense, of course, of the majority of Greeks) on behalf of the international oligarchy. To do so, he embraced (in the name of the radical left!) oligarchic policies that even the most fervent political representatives of the oligarchy, when in government, had baulked at introducing. And what did he get for it?

While in government, doing the oligarchys dirty bidding, the establishment accommodated him, throwing his way the odd compliment. But, once the dirty deed was done, the powers-that-be abandoned him going all out in their support of their traditional political representatives the New Democracy party led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the ramp PASOK party. Without a shred of gratitude to their true saviour, Tsipras, they ditched him in an electoral environment where as a result of his own choices he stood no chance of garnering support from the people whom he had subjected to the troikas oligarchic torture.

In short, leftists dallying with betrayal beware: It does not pay!

Meanwhile in Other News Ukraine Proxy War Is an Unmitigated Disaster for U.S./NATO "IndyWatch Feed National"

Strategic Culture.org June 30, 2023

The Ukraine proxy war against Russia can be increasingly seen as a disastrous defeat for the United States and NATO. That stunning outcome should be making world headlines. Instead, the Western media spin machine is in overdrive about a failed mutiny in Russia, which on an objective scale of important events is relatively minor compared with the colossal U.S./NATO scandal.

A month-long Ukrainian counteroffensive has failed to make any dent in Russias defenses despite billions of dollars and euros in weaponry funnelled to the Kiev regime by the NATO bloc. That is a veritably astounding calamity and scandal. The completely unnecessary death and destruction are obscene akin to World War One slaughtering by callous armchair generals and politicians.

Even Western officials and the corrupt money-grubbing Kiev regime are coyly admitting that the much-vaunted counteroffensive that had been hailed for months as an expected hammer blow against Russian forces is a failure. Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers as well as NATO special forces covertly on the ground have been killed. Hundreds of tanks and infantry vehicles have been pulverized by superior Russian firepower.

It is a slaughter and orgy of war racketeering that American and European political elites, along with their media servants, have endlessly promoted.

There will be hell to pay for the American and European rulers who have staked everything on their nefarious ambition for the strategic defeat of Russia (under the specious guise of defending democracy in a Nazi regime!)

The political consequences for U.S. President Joe Biden will make his Afghanistan withdrawal debacle in 2021 look like a picnic as presidential elections loom next year.

As for the European Union, whose leaders have slavishly followed Washingtons folly in Ukraine, the repercussions of economic and political chaos will fatally undermine this already teetering entity.

Ultimately, theres no getting away from the impending seismic geopolitical crisis, no matter how much the Western elitist mis-rulers twist and squirm to avoid accountability.

The tumult from the Prigozhin affair in Russia over the last week, which saw a mutiny attempt by the chief of the Wagner private military company, came at a convenient time for the U.S. and EU. It momentarily distracted from the unmitigated disaster that Washington and its NATO allies have created in Ukraine. But as the Prigozhin charade dissipates, the focus will rightly turn to the far bigger scandal of Western-led defeat in Ukraine.

Who will answer for the countless lives lost, the millions of displaced, and the American and European economies and livelihoods thrown into disarray? All of the Western so-called leaders, as well as the shameless war-propagandizing media outlets, are a rogues gallery that will face searing scrutiny...

Who are members of BMRSG? Michael Howorth "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

An occasional series on some of the very many people who work or have worked with BMRSG over the 22 years we have been going.

Michael Howorth tells his story.

I first visited Villawood IDC on 26/01/2012 with the BMRSG. At the time it was with Graeme Swincer, his wife and daughter.  They were very active members of the BMRSG.  The connection, because i live in Seaforth, was that another of Graemes daughters and her husband attended the same church as where my wife was the social justice pastor.  They wanted the church (Seaforth Baptist) to get involved with asylum seekers and refugees.

So our friends organised via Graeme and the BMRSG for myself, my wife, our 3 children and one boyfriend to visit Villawood that day almost 11.5 years ago.

In the end I kept visiting and joined the BMRSG as the coastal branch as there was not much point in opening a refugee support group on the northern beaches at that time.

People like Noeline Nagle will know me from those early years. I attended all the meetings in the Blue Mountains, staying with Grant Medaris and his wife.  I was a big part of starting up the employment stuff, organising the training from STARTTS for detention centre visitors and a key instigator in getting legal representation (via the then PILCH) for the ASIO refugees for the Margaret Stone review.  I also did a fundraiser for the ASIO refugees families in 2014. I visited Villawood right up to December 2019 (my last visit) and I first started working in the community in March 2012 when one of the asylum seekers I had met was released on a PPV. So I have always had one foot in both camps community visitor and detention centre visitor. I used to visit the Villawood housing section as well as the general section.

At the time (2012), the ASIO refugees were kinda forgotten as nothing could be done for them so I kinda adopted them.

I still work with all the ASIO refugees I met and many others.  Apart from one Iranian, all my clients are Tamil.  In the early years I did work with other nationalities but just drifted to the Tamils.  I do try to come to the quarterly meetings but it is not always possible due to family commitments (4 grandchildren).

I tend to fly under the radar as a) I am not in the Blue Mountains and b) I am not a great team player. I prefer to just get things done. That is my single biggest skill I get things done.

I have done partner visa applications, citizenship applications, disability support pension claims, numerous Centrelink dispute resolutions and much much more.  I also provide a fair bit of business advice as the Tamils are entrepreneurs but tend to miss the details like have they got public li...

Morning Star assesses The Palestine Laboratory "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

The British newspaper Morning Star positively reviews my new book, The Palestine Laboratory, in an article written by Bob Newland:

This book, dedicated in solidarity with the Palestinians and Israelis fighting for a just future is a very effective contribution to that cause.

An outstanding work of investigative journalism, it exposes the close links between Israel, the US and repressive regimes throughout the world.

It catalogues extensively how Israel has developed its arms industry through the occupation of Palestinian lands and promoted it through decades of suppression of Palestinian rights.

Loewenstein grew up in Australia, the child of refugees from Nazi Germany. As he studied Israel he came to believe that the policies of the state of Israel represent a threat to its Jewish population rather than offering a safe haven.

He became an avid supporter of Palestinian rights and an opponent of apartheid Israel.

After four years (2016-20) living in East Jerusalem, he is convinced that a two-state solution is no longer viable that the security of the Jewish people in Israel can only be served by a one-state solution where all its citizens can live equally.

Loewenstein focuses on the commercialisation of an extreme form of nationalism. This is powerfully represented by Benjamin Netanyahus right-wing zionist coalition which protects corruption, exports repression and seeks to establish Israel as an exclusively Jewish state by expelling the remaining Palestinians and colonising their lands.

Word-Salads, their use and Coercive Control "IndyWatch Feed National"

The spotlight that is now shining on the Pentecostal Church alongside of a growing understanding about religious coercive control, and the psychological and emotional manipulation in high demand religious groups, cults and personal development groups is very timely. At no other time in history have unsuspecting people become a target for recruitment through digital devices, on line forums and e-marketing whilst sitting at home on the computer, unaware that the interesting group / person /community they have started to follow maybe a cult.

The term word salad is often used by researchers and educators to describe one of the psychological tactics that charismatic leaders used to draw people in, and then to keep them engaged and mesmerised.

The following list describes the definition of word salad and its implications for unsuspecting recruits and followers of the church /cult leader:

Positives come from budget "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Like all organisations and tiers of government across the country, council is facing heavy financial pressure due to rising costs.

As a result, this years council budget is about being financially responsible.

Councils need to concentrate on long-term sustainability as much as the short-term, which means that the difficult decisions being made now will help set us up for the future, while allowing us to deliver many wonderful projects and important community services in the year ahead.

Council committed to listening to the communitys feedback on our proposed budget, and we thank the many people and community groups who made submissions.

We have heard that feedback and responded.

Across the region, we have allocated more funding for libraries, reinstated funding for the Kardinia Aquatic Centre to operate during winter, and restored funding towards surf lifesaving at our ocean beaches.

I trust that the Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads communities will welcome these changes, particularly members of the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club.

There are many other positive stories out of this budget.

We are continuing to strongly invest in new facilities and maintenance of our existing assets and there is a huge range of projects 254 in total over four years that have been funded.

We will see many of these make great progress over the next year with funding now reconfirmed.

Some exciting ones that come to mind include the Collendina Reserve pavilion upgrade in Ocean Grove, which will receive $694,000 in 2023-24, the Barwon Heads Bowling Club pavilion, which will receive $200,000 in 2023-24, and the Barwon Heads Tennis Club court resurfacing and pavilion and lighting upgrade, which will receive $239,000 in 2023-24.

The money for Barwon Heads Bowling Club will complete its $1.2 million pavilion, which has been supported by $500,000 from the federal government and $200,000 from the Victorian government and is expected to be completed in the next few months.

On top of this, there is future funding allocated for a significant project at Devlins Road Reserve (Kingston), in Ocean Grove.

This covers the detailed design and construction of a pavilion, sports fields, sports lighting, and other infrastructure.

There is $750,000 allocated for this project in 2023-24, $1.7 million in 2024-25, and $2.565 million in 2025-26, totalling $5.015 million over three years.

With costs rising at a rapid rate, we have been clear that our money wont stretch as far as it previously did.

We also wont be making changes to the list of capital projects to be placed on hold, and we understand this will be disappointing for those who made submissions on particular projects.

But it is important to remember that these are still on our agenda, and we will be looking for ways to deliver them, including creating affordability in our own budget as soon as we can as well....

Emotions Are Not Bad Behavior "IndyWatch Feed National"

From The Natural Child Project/Robin Grille: One of the most commonly heard parental laments is about how children try to get attention. So many behaviors that adults dont like are brushed off as merely attention-seeking devices. Dont worry about him, we say, he is just doing it to get attention.

When children use oblique ways to get attention, such as causing a ruckus, exaggerating or feigning their hurts, picking on other children, showing off, being coquettish they risk being ignored or put down, as nearby adults roll their eyes in exasperation. Sometimes, this also happens to children even when they directly and openly call for the attention they crave. Instead of scorning the child, why dont we ask these questions: When a child is being manipulative, instead of direct, how did he learn to do this? How did he come to feel that he shouldnt openly ask for a hug, an answer to his question, sympathy or just to be noticed or played with?

All children begin their lives with complete frankness about their needs. Babies and toddlers reveal their longings with no compunction: what you see is what you get. If a child reaches out for attention and for warmth and she gets it, her ability to be open and directly assertive is reinforced. By begrudging our childrens healthy attention-seeking behaviors, we unwittingly train them to be indirect. We leave them little room for much else, so they go for the attention they need and deserve through the back door.

Our society tends to consider childrens needs for attention as a bother. No wonder children become indirect attention seekers, some even going to great lengths to fall ill or get injured in order to be noticed. Children who have too often been denied attention can become insatiable, as if no amount of limelight ever fills their cup. Attention is life-giving, a basic need and a human right. Children deserve all the attention they want.

When you wholeheartedly give a child the attention she asks for from the beginning, she soon has her fill. This is precisely what helps her to become more autonomous. As she grows, she asks for less of your attention (research shows that well-attached babies grow into children who are more independent), and when she does want attention, she asks directly, boldly and clearly.

Punished for feeling

Time and time again children are heavily reprimanded for committing the offence of crying or being angry. Lets get this straight: emotions are not bad behavior. Emotions dont hurt anyone. Suppressing childrens emotions does, on the other hand, cause them harm: over time, if done repeatedly, it unbalances their brain chemistry, it stresses their immune and digestive systems, and it undermines their ability to relate to others.

Emotional censorship starts early. One of the most common thin...

Giulia is designed to turn heads "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Alfa Romeo Giulia is a stylish Italian sports sedan built on a rear-drive platform and designed to tackle the market segment currently dominated by the premium European brands.

Although the name Giulia (pronounced Julia) was around in the 1960s and early 1970s it didnt re-emerge until 2015 when, to the delight of Alfistis everywhere, the company broke away from using the bland numeric names 156 and 159 and returned to such a distinctively Italian one.

There are five models in the Giulia range: Ti, Veloce, Quadrifoglio, GTA and GTAm.

Theres a huge difference in price, starting from around $70,000 for the Ti and Veloce, then doubling once to the $143,000 Quadrifoglio and doubling again to the track-ready GTA and GTAm.

Our test car was the Quadrifoglio, which is Italian for four-leaf clover and has been the symbol for Alfa racing cars for close to 100 years. In modern times Quadrifoglio, often abbreviated to QV, indicates high-performance road cars.

STYLING

Giulia Quadrifoglio is a real stunner. Its very svelte and Italian in its shape and drew plenty of attention wherever we we tested.

Indeed, one Irish colleague was so smitten by the combination of the colour and the shamrock/clover badges (there is a difference apparently) on the sides that only my mention of the price tag stopped him from rushing off to buy one.

The exterior is highlighted by the traditional triangular shield grille flanked by two lower-mounted grilles in the apron. The bonnet has two cooling outlets for the engine bay

Theres a carbon-fibre splitter and large air intakes for the intercoolers as well as the brakes. The side skirts also feature carbon-fibre inserts and there are gill-style outlets either side at the front to allow air to escape from the wheel housings.

The angry-eyes headlights, narrow on the inside and swept-back over the front fenders, add to its striking appearance.

Unlike some of its competitors, there is no wagon variant for the Giulia although the recently-released Stelvio SUV Quadrifoglio is there if a more functional interior is needed.

INTERIOR

Giulia is built close to the ground making entry and exit difficult for less supple occupants. Consequently, the driving position is lower than we normally like but Giulia is a sports sedan so thats to be expected.

The dashboard tilts slightly towards the driver.

Our test QV came with optional black leather with Alcantara inserts and green/white stitching. The front seats have tall rigid bolsters which will challenge ample-buttocked occupants but do provide excellent support.

Cabin storage is adequate, with dual cup holders and a sizeable smartphone-sized alcove at the base of the dashboard and an adjacent USB socket. There are two more USB ports in a small centre console storage box with a wireless phone charging pad next to t......

Wonthaggi Climate Rally and March Stop the banks funding coal! by Jessica Harrison "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Forty local people rallied and marched through Wonthaggi on Tuesday 20th June, calling for the banks to stop funding fossil fuels.

The rally was led by students from Newhaven College, Bass Coast College and the Village School, who spoke out at each branch about the uncertain future we face if fossil fuels are mined and burnt, continuing to pollute our heating planet.

Joseph Thompson, Newhaven College student, said The big 4 banks cannot continue allowing the expansion of the destructive fossil fuel industry. This is a direct attack on our future as young people, and so we are rising and rebelling, and we will come back, again and again, week after week, to demand an end to these climate crimes.

We will continue to advocate for climate justice, until we are taken seriously by these big corporations like NAB and Whitehaven.

The rally began at NAB. Whitehaven Coal, a Queensland-based coal company, needs a loan of $4.4 Billion to expand their coal operations. National campaign Move Beyond Coal is calling for NAB to stop any loans to Whitehaven Coal. An announcement about whether the loan is approved is expected any day.

Indigo Aurora, a student at Newhaven College, said Its so uplifting to fight for such a crucial movement with so many passionate people from all walks of life. People have been fighting for the climate for decades, and were not going to stop now.

The march continued around the streets of Wonthaggi, to ANZ and Westpac banks, with songs and chants echoing through the wintry streets.

After the rally, a number of local people made clear to the protesters that they plan to change their bank accounts to an ethical alternative.

There don't appear to be any workable plans to tackle this, with Victoria's state government now reducing incentives for off-the-plan purchases and increasing land taxes for landlords in the face of record population growth.

Unseasonable rain continues to fall across Australia's north, helping lower temperatures to near-record levels "IndyWatch Feed National"

Unseasonable rain continues to fall across Australia's north in what's meant to be the region's dry season, helping lower temperatures to near-record levels. The surprise soaking is forecast to last at least another five days, gradually shifting from the Kimberley and Northern Territory this weekend, to Queensland and New South Wales next week. Here's what's going on. Why is it raining in the dry season? The cause of the rare winter rains can be traced back to two pools of cold polar air, which earlier this week moved north through WA and caused a dramatic change in the winds blowing over Australia. These rivers of winds are known as jet streams, which blow about 10 kilometres above the earth's surface and form the boundary between relatively warm and cold air.

The French Riots "IndyWatch Feed National"

QUESTION: Martin,

You said to watch France and an early warning indicator. Might Europe be on the precipice?

My family, friends, and I thank you for everything that you do.

Best wishes,

JC
ANSWER: What we are watching in France is far more than simply a police shooting of a 17-year-old youth. The New York Times reported that in subsequent years, several beatings by the police and deaths in custody led to minor protests. This appears to be cumulative, but economic stagnation is eating away at Europe. While the overall unemployment rate in France is about 7%, the youth unemployment rate of ages 15 to 24 remains over 20%. This is a direct source of the unrest. All civil unrest is ALWAYS rooted in economics. A simple correlation between the global economy and economics reveals the source.

The danger is that as the economic conditions of Europe get worse with all the insane regulation for Climate Change that is reducing food production to eliminating jobs, all for a theory pushed by the WEF to create a new world of totalitarian order, we see hostility rising not just internationally, but also domestically and this can spread as a contagion throughout the EU. You cannot destroy the livelihood of so many people without dire consequences. This is partly why they also want the international war to divert attention from their failed climate change agenda.

The recent events in France are an uncanny repeat of the youth/racial riots of the autumn of 2005. That is when two youngsters of Arab origin were electrocuted while trying to escape arrest by the French police. This time, two police officers shot a juvenile of Algerian origin as he tried to escape in a stolen car. The evidence that surfaced showed that the police officer was in no d...

Re-painted Australian Army Marked Leonardo S.P.A. Helicopters (Agusta) AW139 Helicopter VH-YBF "Warhorse 207" Returns to Townsville via Rockhampton Airport - Plus More! "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

On Monday 22 May, a surprise visitor made a return to Central Queensland in the form of Australian Army marked Leonardo S.P.A. Helicopters (Agusta) AW139 Helicopter VH-YBF.

The chopper called into Rockhampton Airport from the Gold Coast and then departed to Townsville and was heard to be using the radio callsign of "Warhorse 207".

VH-YBF flew up from Bankstown to the Gold Coast the previous day and was photographed above resting at the Goldie.

VH-YBF had flown South to Bankstown in early April for what we thought was and end-of-lease maintenance lay-up - clearly not though - and the chopper looks great in a revised livery.

As previously mentioned, VH-YBF and fellow AW139 VH-YBG are registered to Helicorp (Toll Group) and are two of three(?) AW139 helicopters that have been leased to the Australian Army's 5th Aviation Regiment based at Townsville. They have been provided to the Army to provide a similar capability to the NH Industries MRH-90 so pilots can keep up their hours.

Meanwhile, also on Monday 22 May, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Exercise Black Dagger 23-1 which is currently underway out of Townsville, saw the RAAF Pilatus PC-21 Forward Air Control Aircraft A54-048 as "Raven 16" fly down to the Shoalwater Bay Training Area to complete a sortie from and back to Townsville Airport.

Finally, also on Monday 22 May, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Alenia C-27J Spartan transport aircraft A34-010 looked to visit the Samuel Hill Aerodrome within Shoalwater Bay three separate times on flights from and back to RAAF Base Amberley.  For each flight, it was heard to use the radio callsign of "Wallaby 61".

Australia is first nation to allow doctors to prescribe MDMA, psychedelics for PTSD, depression "IndyWatch Feed National"

Starting July 1, Australia will allow doctors to prescribe MDMA and magic mushrooms to treat PTSD and depression. It's a worldwide first that comes as research uncovers how psychedelic drugs have real potential for treating mental health conditions. "Australia is creating an interesting model that could pave the way forward for the rest of the world," Dr. Michael Alpert, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, told ABC News. Comment: The West, perhaps, but it seems the multipolar world is at least, first, attempting to improve the lives of its citizenry. MDMA is a synthetic hallucinogen, often linked to rave parties, that's also known as "molly" or "ecstasy." According to the new rules established by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration, MDMA can be prescribed only to treat post-traumatic stress disorder by authorized psychiatrists. Psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, will only be prescribed to treat depression that hasn't responded to other therapies.

Four Ways to Save Money While Eating Healthy "IndyWatch Feed National"

Everyone knows that a healthy diet is good for our physical and mental well-being. Balanced eating habits can help us live longer, help us feel more energised, and it can even help us look good.

However, when people start to feel financial pressure, healthy foods are usually the first thing to go. When under financial stress, a lot of people often neglect their health for the sake of money and convenience.

While its important to save money wherever you can, its just as important to keep our bodies strong and healthy through proper eating habits.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to save money on groceries without having to sacrifice your health. To help you out, here are four easy ways to save money on food.

Make a Weekly Meal Plan

A study that examined secondary school students across Australia found that being in a lower socio-economic area is associated with frequently consuming fast food. Additionally, the study reported that students who go to fast food chains with their family were more likely to go on a weekly basis. NobleOak, an Australian insurance company, reported that convenience and pricing were two of the most prominent reasons for this behaviour.

Based on the findings of these studies, it would make sense to create a weekly meal plan. Properly planning your meals in advance can help you save money in the long run as it reduces the amount of wasted food throughout the week. Moreover, it also reduces the need to drive to various locations for food. This means less trips to grocery stores and restaurants which then leads to less money spent on gas.

Additionally, by preparing your food in advance, you may become less tempted to eat fast food for conveniences sake. If you already have food thats ready to eat in the fridge, it will be a lot easier to pass on that trip to your local burger joint.

The rise of sourdough: a return to nourishing traditions "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Amidst the chaos of recent years, a remarkable phenomenon emerged a surge of passionate sourdough bread-baking enthusiasts.

As our lives simplified and confined us to our homes, curiosity sparked playful experimentation with sourdough culture.

The allure of sourdough is simply irresistible; its fermentation and biochemistry offer a captivating glimpse into the realm of science.

At Ket Baker, its foundation lies in its unabashed adoration for the wonders of breadmaking. Cultivated bread becomes an integral part of a nourishing and healing diet, intricately woven into the fabric of our overall well being.

It is widely acknowledged that our gut, often referred to as the second brain, greatly benefits from the inclusion of fermented foods a crucial aspect of holistic wellness.

Unfortunately, the dark underbelly of industrialised bread production has transformed this essential sustenance into a profit-driven commodity, devoid of any true nutritional value. The demonisation of bread has been further exacerbated by a coordinated campaign against gluten.

While coeliac disease is undeniably real, the market has been flooded with questionable substitutes that come with a host of unsavoury additives.

Ket Bakers concern lies not only with the final product, but also with the conscientious cultivation and expression of the grain itself.

Creating fermented foods successfully requires an understanding of the intricate biochemical dance within a living culture. As bakers, we resist the allure of shortcuts and commercial success; which risk diluting the authenticity of sourdough. Authentic sourdough demands time, attention, and, above all, a generous infusion of love. Skilled bakers can eschew extraneous elements, allowing bread to reclaim its rightful place as a nutrient-dense staple an ambassador of gut health, rich in vital vitamins and minerals readily absorbed and utilised by our bodies.

At Ket Baker, they proudly embrace their old-school roots, transmitting cherished family traditions to nourish yours. The products are a testament to the harmonious collaboration between local, small-scale producers, thereby fostering a thriving community economy.

The unwavering commitment to prioritising people and quality over profits shines through every loaf. Ket Baker actively trains and mentors enthusiasts, safeguarding the ancient art of sourdough baking and ensuring its perpetuation, as the knowledge base and culture of this culture continue to evolve and expand.

As the age-old adage goes you are what you eat, so its imperative to choose nourishing sustenance that fuels our bodies. Lets embrace the sourdough renaissance, rediscovering time-honoured traditions and reclaiming our connection to wholesome food.

Visit Ket Baker to experience the true pleasure of artisanal sourdough bread and small-batch pastries that will leave you craving for mo...

Shopfront disappointment

It is disappointing to see that the budget priced fruit and vegetables store in Leopold has gone and been replaced by yet another pet store.

There are already numerous fast-food outlets along this strip in Leopold and its a shame that the health of locals has been compromised. Look a little further down the line of shops and a vape store has appeared. Just when the government and health authorities are trying to get on top of the new problem that has replaced tobacco.

Homeless horror

I was deeply disturbed to read about Geelongs growing homelessness rates and the fact that 8500 people are currently on the priority waitlist for social housing in our region (Homeless numbers soar higher, Voice, 16/06/2023).

To make matters worse, many of those waiting for housing are dealing with top priority issues such as family violence, over-crowding, rough sleeping, and threats of danger. They desperately need a safe home.

Geelong, like many parts of Australia, has a serious shortage of public housing resulting from years of neglect by all levels of government.

Everyone needs a safe place to live. Our local, state and federal governments must work together to provide immediate housing relief for those currently without affordable accommodation in Geelong.

Robert Van Zetten, Highton

To market, to market

For those looking for something different to do on a Sunday, I strongly recommend a visit to the Belmont Sunday Market.

There are so many bargains to be had including clothing and footwear, for both adults and children,

Often at prices which are well below those which apply in op shops.

Over the years, I have regularly bought pre-loved quality clothing for $2 or less.

Pick your day, as poor weather usually means fewer vendors on site.

Kangaroos: a need for clarity, monitoring, and considered views "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The state government is running a consultation on its Review of the kangaroo harvesting plan. You can participate by going here.

The plan, and the program it describes, is justified by the following:

Areas with large kangaroo populations can experience issues such as:

  • traffic accidents
  • damage to pasture, crops, gardens and fences caused by kangaroos
  • negative impact on vulnerable native vegetation or areas undergoing revegetation due to kangaroo grazing
  • competition for grazing with livestock on farming properties
  • kangaroos becoming aggressive towards people, usually when individual animals have regular contact with humans (e.g. become used to being fed by humans).

According to the consultation documents, aerial surveys show between 2 million and three million kangaroos in the state.

These aerial surveys dont include numbers for heavily forested areas, for obvious reasons. The numbers, density and abundance [of Eastern Greys] are significantly higher in the Central Region [of which were a part] than in other regions.

As witness recent correspondence in our local press, kangaroo shooting is controversial. A very quick look at the dot points above will reveal that a large part of the kangaroo problem relates to human behaviour: traffic accidents could be reduced if people drove more slowly; the practice of feeding kangaroos in the wild is silly, and should be massively discouraged; competition with livestock could be reduced if water points were less available to kangaroos; and better planning of urban expansion would reduce the impact on kangaroo habitat.

In the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens reserve: a clear appreciation of the facts about kangaroo populations...

Signs of hope "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Nearly 4,000 cars take the Midland Highway through Campbells Creek every day. Its a fair bet few of the drivers notice the row of trees along the east side of the highway opposite Moscript street. Well, its not a good idea for drivers to be gazing anywhere except at the road, of course. But if you happen to be in that area, pause and take a look: youll see a row of possibly the biggest Silver Banksias in the district.

Work trip yields results "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

I spent a few days in Melbourne over the past fortnight, attending a work conference.

I had a few walks along the Yarra between Kew and Alphington and was surprised to see a small flock of king parrots as well as a pair of kookaburras.

The most common bird seen in Melbourne was the omnipresent rainbow lorikeet. These birds are certainly thriving in many areas of Australia.

On the way home from Melbourne I took a detour to Western Treatment Plant, as I hadnt been there for months. I was pleased to see good numbers of brown falcons, nankeen kestrels, pied stilts and white-faced herons.

I saw a small flock of curlew sandpipers, that are migratory shorebirds that have obviously chosen to over winter in southern Australia rather than flying to the Northern Hemisphere to breed.

I was pleased to spot a peregrine falcon roosting high in a tree canopy in Point Wilson Road. I think this bird was a female as it was a large bird and female peregrines are noticeably bigger than males.

I also saw four magnificent brolgas. I was looking along the Spit for blue-winged parrots or maybe even an orange-bellied parrot, but didnt spot either of these beautiful birds.

On the subject of the critically endangered orange-bellied parrots, 36 of these birds were released from captive breeding programs in late April to the Spit Nature Conservation Reserve in Northern Western Port Bay and Lake Connewarre on the Bellarine Peninsula.

This project aims to establish flocks of released birds in suitable habitats in Victoria with the aim of attracting naturally migrating orange-bellied parrots to those sites to improve the over-winter survival of these birds. These birds are being electronically monitored to track their movements and survival.

The Bellarine Peninsula was also in the news over the past fortnight after a tree was cut down and three barn owl hatchlings were found in a hollow of the tree. These birds were taken to the Werribee Zoo where they were looked after in a tree-like hollow.

The parent birds were assumed to have left the area after their hollow was destroyed. The three owls fledged and were released back into the wild this week. Wildlife carers asked residents to check hollows in trees before cutting the trees down. Hollows are crucial for many species of animals and birds for shelter and nesting.

I received a lovely email from Fiona and Phill, who are periodic visitors to Ocean Grove as they have family in the area. They love birds and are long term nature observers, as Phil worked as a park ranger for 40 years.

Phil was outside at night in the Woodlands area, using a thermal monocular to observe possums, when he saw a large bird flying in the scope and in the torchlight saw a very large wingspan of some sort of owl.

They were wondering if powerful owls have been seen around the Bellarine, to which I replied that the bird was most likely a male tawny frogmo...

Welcome back to the snotty trevalla "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The Geelong inner harbour has welcomed back one of its favourite landbased species, snotty trevalla.

Anglers have been finding success throwing small creature or curl tail soft plastics that work very well and will also get the majority of the other species kicking about in the area. Bait will always be a standout for these with Trellys Chicken working best. Dont knock it until you try it, works really well.

Good areas to target these guys are the Geelong waterfront, Cunningham Pier and North Shore are all fantastic areas to suss.

The outer harbour still remains a popular location for anglers chasing BIG calamari in the shallow water, size 3.0 or 3.5 jigs are working well with natural baitfish colours working best. Some hoods have been getting over 40cm in length so its well worth getting down there and having a crack.

Swan Bay has been a popular location for anglers this past week trying to escape the crazy weather and there has been some great fishing on offer in the channel. Silver trevally, pinkie snapper, salmon and garfish. A key to fishing this area is a steady burley trail and persistence to sift through the rubbish fish, do that and the better fish will start to hit the deck.

The south west estuary systems have been holding some impressive fishing this past week with bream and perch both on the chew, the Hopkins River was a standout.

Peri Stavropoulos from Trellys Geelong along with Jason Bird managed a few bream to 44cm and a few smaller estuary perch. Soft plastics, deep diving jerkbaits and vibes were all working very well. The water has been very dirty so plenty of scent on lures has definitely helped.

Lake Purrumbete still remains to be the best trout fishing location across the state at the moment with plenty of good reports still rolling in of anglers landing brown trout to 8lb along with the usual other species that hang around there like rainbow trout, tiger trout, chinook salmon and redfin.

Casting the weed edges with shallow jerk baits is working very well at the moment.

Judge Rules Texas DPS Must Release Withheld Documents Related to the Uvalde School Shooting "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

A state district judge this week ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to begin the process of releasing records related to the May 2022 Uvalde school shooting that the agency has shielded from the public for over a year.

The decision by 261st Civil District Court Judge Daniella DeSeta Lyttle marks a win for a coalition of news organizations, including ProPublica and The Texas Tribune, which sued the agency in August. The lawsuit sought the release of records that would bring more clarity to law enforcements failed response, including emails, video footage, call logs, emergency communications and forensic records.

The public deserves a full accounting of what happened that day, and were glad that the judge has begun that process, said Reid Pillifant, an associate attorney with Haynes Boone, a law firm that represents the news organizations. Were hopeful DPS wont fight this decision, and well begin the process of providing transparency.

DPS did not directly answer the newsrooms questions, including whether it plans to appeal the courts decision. In a statement emailed to ProPublica and the Tribune on Friday, a spokesperson for the agency said that the litigation is ongoing and that the department will carefully consider its options when a Final Judgment is entered.

Lyttle instructed DPS to submit a detailed list of redactions it wants to make to the public records by Aug. 31. The judge said that the court...
