Credit growth crushed by interest rate hikes "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Credit growth plummets

Housing credit growth slowed to just 0.24 per cent in June, the lowest since August 2020, suggesting that housing prices will lose some momentum going into spring.

Anecdotally mortgage brokers are reporting a recent lift in activity as borrowers sense that interest rates are close to peaking, but the June figures were very soft.

Overall credit growth in the economy dropped to just 0.2 per cent, so this engine of economic growth is really plunging now as interest rate hikes begin to bite.

The economy recorded only 0.2 per cent growth in the first quarter of the year, and Q2 doesn't look any better, so things are already teetering on the brink of a recession, if we aren't quite there already.

Investor credit growth turned sharply negative in June, the clearest evidence yet that some portfolio and cashflow-focused investors are offloading their properties.

Unholy alliance on migration "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

An important and insightful piece of Australian economic and social research was published last week and got virtually no coverage.

I will come back to it, but first to some history.

In 1996, Pauline Hanson (pictured) made a racist, divisive and appalling speech in the House of Representatives declaring, I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians.

That speech was vastly damaging, not just because of the racism, but because the egregiously appalling portion of the speech made any agreement with the other correct part of the speech completely socially unacceptable.

Hanson was half right. In 1996 we were, in fact, in danger of being swamped. The outcome in the past quarter century proves that.

It does not matter whether we were being swamped by blacks, browns, yellows, or fluent English-speaking whites. What matters is that excessive immigration has put a massive strain on the environment, government services, and the living standards of the majority so a tiny few can vastly profit. We have a housing crisis, congestion, health care beyond reach, and blistering education costs and student debt.

The real danger of Hanson was not the racism in her statements but the fact she helped make it socially unacceptable to question high immigration for fear of being branded racist.

Now the research is in to prove it. The Australian Population Research Institute surveyed more than 3000 people and published a report on it by Dr Katharine Betts. (https://tapri.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Guardians-FinalV2.pdf)

Sixty-one percent wanted lower or no immigration. Only 12 per cent said Australia needed more people.

An earlier survey by Essential Research survey found that 67 percent of respondents thought People are scared to say what they really think [about immigration] because they dont want to be labelled as racist.

Betts wrote that a cone of silence was cast by both major parties and th...

Farewell to warrior queen Sinad OConnor "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Farewell to warrior queen Sinad OConnor

The passing of Sinad OConnor last week shocked the world and rekindled discussions about the urgency of treating mental health issues, writes Jenny LeComte.

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses mental health issues and suicide

IRISH singer-songwriter, political activist and warrior queen, Sinad OConnor, spent her entire life searching for meaning but sadly never really found it prior to her death at the age of 56. She trembled with the truths she felt compelled to tell and was a brave, often brash, polarising, divisive and cathartic figure.

She was born Sinad Marie Bernadette OConnor in Dublin on 8 December 1966, later changing her name to Shuhada Sadaqat when she converted to Islam, although she continued to perform under the stage name of Sinad OConnor.

The third of five children, Sinad had a horrific childhood and was plagued with mental health issues throughout her life. At the age of 15, she was placed in a Magdalene asylum for 18 months because her shoplifting and truancy had gotten out of control. Discussing her experience in later life, Sinead said of her time in the asylum, I have never and probably will never experience such panic and terror and agony over anything.

In June 1993, Sinad wrote a letter to The Irish Times in which she alluded to extreme physical and mental abuse by her mother. This was later confirmed by her brother, Joseph.

She poignantly wrote:

If only I can fight off the voices of my parents and gather a sense of self-esteem, then Ill be able to REALLY sing.

She said later that month:

Our family is very messed up. We cant communicate with each other. We are all in agony. I, for one, am in agony.

From about the age of 15, Sinad became interested in music as a means of sublimating her awful childhood. Through an ad she placed in Hot Press...

Will Labour allow more offshore drilling? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Offshore gas exploration permit 38602, held by Todd Energy, was due to expire today, and I was looking forward to announcing its demise. First granted in 1993 to Todd Energy, it was apparently the site of a gas discovery in 2004. But rather than exploit it, Todd sat on it for twenty years, repeartedlyt extending the permit for "appraisal" to ensure they could claim the value of this "asset" on their books. The most recent extension was in 2019, and was one of the first signs of the emptiness of labour's offshore gas ban. But when I checked today, it looks like Todd have applied to convert it into a mining permit.

This is perfectly legal, thanks to Labour's chickenshittery. While they banned issuing new offshore petroleum permits, a sneaky little transition clause buried in a schedule ensures that reapplications must be determined "as if the Amendment Act had not been enacted". Because we wouldn't want that "ban" to actually mean anything, would we? But the new Crown Minerals Amendment Bill (currently waiting for its committee stage) seems to fix this, with a new transition clause saying that existing applications will be determined in accordance with the amended Act (which of course includes the offshore ban). The question now is whether Labour will actually pass this before the election, or whether by cowardice and chickenshittery they'll effectively enable a continuation of offshore drilling, in violation of their own "ban". And if they do, will voters tolerate that gutlessness at the ballot box?

[For the curious, I'm tracking petroleum permits here. The next expiry after this isn't until December next year, though if we're lucky we'll see some surrenders as a result of "drill or drop" clauses]

National doesn't get it "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Temperature records are being broken everywhere, Europe is on fire, the Gulf Stream is about to collapse, so of course National reannounces its perennial election policy of "more roads!", coupled of course with "less public transport".

There are plenty of reasons to hate this - sprawl, dodgy costs, National punishing cities who don't vote for them - but the big one is simple: this is the exact opposite of what we need in a climate crisis. More roads equals more traffic equals more emissions equals more fires, floods, and cyclones. Its a clear sign that National just doesn't get it on the biggest challenge facing Aotearoa. And that means they're unfit to govern.

Labor must ensure survival of an iconic Australian species "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Labor must ensure survival of an iconic Australian species

Labor must establish a safe haven for koalas and put an end to the destruction of their habitat, writes Sue Arnold

POLITICAL HYPOCRISY needs to be exposed. "Keeping the bastards honest" is the legitimate role of the fourth estate.

The promise to establish a Great Koala National Park by the incoming NSW Labor government is the best example of this hypocrisy.

A national park dedicated to koalas would be a global first. A uniquely Australian park that recognised the importance of this iconic species, now facing extinction. Creating the park is more than a NSW state issue. In Indigenous culture, there are many koala dreamings, their loss kills country.

Koalas are struggling to survive. Time is of the essence.

Environment Minister Penny Sharpe has repeatedly said the park will be established in the first term of government". The term is four years and theres no guarantee of a second term.

In reality, the establishment of the park could take another three-plus years. Meantime, the Forestry Corporation is allowed to log koala hubs in the proposed park for the next 12 months. If the establishment of the park is not undertaken until the last year of government, how much more logging will be allowed?

The evidence of double-speak and in-fighting in government between forestry interests and koala survival is hard to ignore.  Agencies contradict each other.  Its increasingly obvious koalas are in the way of political expediency.

The Minister continues to assert in the mainstream media that Labor gave a commitment in its pre-election promise that there would not be a moratorium on forestry activities".

The assertion doesnt stack up.  IA has gone through every press release, article, comment to find any Labor...

What need drives you to write such turgid poetry,

I believe Id be hard-pressed to give answer logically,

Except to say I am drive by a thread attached to me.

A thread invisible to the eye, words, emotions, symmetry..

That draws together feelings so difficult to explain in plain prosetry,

Ariadnes golden thread through the labyrinth of relationships.

And in that eureka moment of discovery,

Everything changes..for in that instant,

What was dull..shines, tedious..exciting, mundane..delights,

All is turned on its head..one springs from bed,

Ready and keen to face the world..All is hooray!

Can there be enough hours in the day..?

Likewise is the love of so many things,

Be it country, family, culture.. that special occasion.

Surely it is that woven thread of sensitive familiarity,

The eyes, the soul, the heavenly spirituality,

That beckons the heart to risk all for companionship,

Lest a thing so precious is wrenched from our grasp!

That, is the best I can make of this mystery called Love.

Australia's media watchdog not holding News Corp to account "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Australia's media watchdog not holding News Corp to account

Australias official media watchdog is no longer fulfilling its intended purpose, reports Alan Austin.

A CAMPAIGN OF malicious lies about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament by the Murdoch media is well underway. This highlights the urgent need for mechanisms to alert Australians to deliberate falsehoods so they can be stopped in their tracks.

Unfortunately the Australian Press Council (APC) is not achieving this end. This is a great pity, as this column has long supported the Council.

Take the latest adjudication as an illustration. The Council criticised the Daily Telegraph on 7 June this year for an article published in March 2020 reporting a 2019 manslaughter trial. The APC judged the article had referred to the victim as transgender when her gender status was not relevant to the offence.

The lag between writing the defective article and its exposure as breaching APC standards is more than three years. That is far too long if the remedial process is to have any effect on current events.

Offenders never named and shamed

We know the offending story was run in News Corps Daily Telegraph and possibly other Murdoch outlets. But we are not told who wrote it, or the editor who approved the final shonky version.

Covering up offenders names diminishes the educative purpose of an adverse APC decision and reduces the punitive effect close to zero. Who at the Daily Tele, or anywhere else, needs to do anything differently following this ruling?

I have now seen the Barbie movie. It is not a children's film, but deals with issues of the meaning of life from a feminist perspective. It is useful to look at because it connects feminist politics with a modern metaphysics - and we get to see what is lost in the process.

I do need to set out the basic plot to explain this (so...spoiler alert). We begin in Barbie land which is a matriarchy where not only do the Barbies rule politically, but the Kens (the male dolls) are merely accessories. The Kens try to impress the Barbies but the Barbies aren't that interested, as every night is girls night.

Then Barbie is afflicted with an existential angst and is forced to go to the real world (where humans live). Barbie had expected to be greeted there as a heroine who had empowered women; instead, the patriarchy still rules. Ken loves that he gets some respect in the real world and returns to Barbie land to set up a patriarchy of his own. Barbie gets to meet her creator in the real world, and then returns to Barbie land with a mother, Gloria, and her daughter. Together they attempt to restore the matriarchy.

The best place to begin in analysing the film is with the metaphysics. Barbie's creator (a God figure) tells Barbie that "I created you so you wouldn't have an ending", i.e. that there are no ends or purposes to her life, but that she must choose for herself what she will be and do. The assumption in the film is that there is no given meaning to things, none given by a creator, so that everything is made up by ourselves and that we as humans subjectively create our own meaning and purpose.

This is the essential frame through which all else follows. What you see in the film is how some things, once thought to be a core aspect of being human, radically lose meaning within this frame.

This is particularly true of relationships between men and women. Some reviewers complained that the film was man-hating. I didn't find this to be so, not directly at least. The men are nearly all well-intentioned. The problem is that...

Theres no such thing as a new nuclear golden agejust old industry hands trying to make a buck "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

FORTUNE, BY STEPHANIE COOKE, July 29, 2023 Since the turn of the millennium, at least $50 billion has been spent on a frantic effort to create a new Golden Age for nuclear energy in the U.S. Billions more are being lavished on an even more desperate effort to launch small reactors as supposedly safer, cheaper alternatives to yesteryears elephant-sized versions. Most of the money comes from ratepayers and taxpayers, accompanied by an avalanche of public relations that rivals the 1950s Atoms for Peace campaign with its claims of too cheap to meter electricity.

So far, the effort has produced little in tangible assets: roughly one gigawatt of capacity from the Watts Bar-2 reactor completed after decades of on-and-off-again construction and the promise of 2 GW from the long-delayed Plant Vogtle in Georgia. So far, not a single molecule of CO2 emissions has been avoided by a new reactor, and the primary beneficiaries are not the people who paid but publicly-owned utilities, reactor design companies, and PR and law firms. They are part of a chorus of advocacy groups and government agencies, led by the Department of Energy (DOE), advancing the idea that low-carbon nuclear is essential to any long-term climate change solution.

The story is selling well but the push for more and more moneyin direct subsidies, ratepayer financing, and government grants or loanshas a dark side. To cite just a few examples, former state officials and utility executives in Illinois and Ohio face lengthy prison terms for bribery schemes linked to subsidies for unprofitable nuclear plants. In South Carolina, two former Scana executives received prison sentences after pleading guilty to criminal charges in 2020 and 2021 over a nuclear project that ultimately collapsed. Two Westinghouse executives also charged are facing a similar fate, with one still awaiting trial in October.

When it comes to costs and schedules, the lack of honesty surrounding nuclear projects is often breathtaking. In Georgia, where...

Funny How The UFO Narrative Coincides With The Race To Weaponize Space "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

does it really sound like a coincidence that were seeing all these news stories about UFOs and aliens at the same time were seeing news stories about a race between the US and China and Russia to dominate space militarily?

Caitlins Newsletter CAITLIN JOHNSTONE, JUL 28, 2023

If Wednesdays House Oversight subcommittee hearing on UFOs had happened ten years ago instead of today, it would have shaken the world. Imagine someone from 2013 hearing congressional testimonies about routine military pilot encounters with giant flying tic tacs, floating orbs, 300-foot red squares, and cubes in clear spheres zipping around in ways that surpass all known earthly technology by leaps and bounds, or about secret government possession of otherworldly aircraft theyre trying to reverse engineer and the dead bodies of their non-human pilots, or about the possibility that these creatures are not merely extraterrestrial but extra-dimensional. Their jaws would have hit the floor.

Now in 2023 weve been getting incrementally drip-fed bits and pieces of these stories for six years, so the scene on Capitol Hill on Wednesday didnt have the impact it wouldve had in 2013. Its making headlines and getting attention, but not as much as Sinead OConnors death or peoples thoughts on Barbie and Oppenheimer. The response from the general public could be described as a collective nervous laugh and a shrug.

. the new UFO narrative wasnt just cooked up at the last minute to distract from current headlines, its been unfolding for six years, and people arent even paying that much attention to it. The empire doesnt tend to orchestrate spectacular events as a distraction anyway; the adjustment of public attention tends to take the much more mundane form of agenda setting in the media, where some stories receive more attention than others based on whats convenient for the oligarchs who own the press.

BOOK REVIEW: The World: A Family History of Humanity "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

BOOK REVIEW: The World: A Family History of Humanity

Simon Sebag Montefiore's tome understandably sacrifices depth for breadth, writes Elizabeth Spiegel

THIS BOOK IS a monster: its 1,262 dense pages (plus index) weigh 1.5kg. The 'select bibliography', available from the authors website, is a 140-page pdf; a pity that supplementary material could not also have included family trees and more maps than the two included on the endpapers.

Its content ranges across four millennia and every inhabited continent. This is not a book for the casual browser: if you dont pay attention, its easy to lose track of who is related to whom, particularly when one individual may be referred to by multiple names or titles. Switches in focus can induce whiplash: at one point the text refers to an attack on Constantinople; a footnote informs the reader that on the other side of the world, Teotihuacan burned in a popular uprising.

Perhaps because the focus of this book is families; many women appear, not only in their relationships with men as concubines, mothers and wives, but also as writers, rulers, fighters and businesswomen.

The first author whose name we know, Enheduanna, was a priestess and princess of the Akkadian empire two thousand years before Christ. In 1782, the widow Helene Amalie Krupp brought out of bankruptcy the company which would go on to arm Germany. The mother of Shaka Zulu, Mnkabayi, plotted against him. Simon Bolvars lover, Manuela Senz, fought beside him to drive the Spanish from Peru.

Unsurprisingly in a book of this size, there are errors, some of which are apparent from context: Galvano Fiamma referred to the east coast of North America in his Cronica Universalis in 1339, not 1139, while Lord Shrewsburys parliamentary attack on Buckingham was in 1674, not 1774. The wreck of the Batavia is described as taking place on 'one of the VOCs first voyages to Australia'.

I had to wonder at the statement that Zulu King Shaka w...

Against the Repugnant Conclusion "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

In my previous post on utilitarianism, I started with two crucial observations.

First, utilitarianism is a political philosophy, dealing with the question of how the resources in a community should be distributed. Its not a system of individual ethics

Second, (this shouldnt be necessary to state, but it is), there is no such thing as utility. Its a theoretical construct which can be used to compare different allocations of resources, not a number in peoples heads that can be measured and added up.

Failure to accept these points is at the heart of the kind of longtermism advocated by William McAskill and, earlier, Parfits Repugnant conclusion. The claim here is that the objective of utilitarians should be to maximise total utility, including people who are brought into existence as a result of our decisions. In particular, that means that it is desirable to bring children into existence who will have a miserable life, provided that no one else is made worse off, and the life is not so bad that the children in question regret being born.

As well as being intuitively unappealing, this idea makes no sense in the two main contexts in which it is relevant: families deciding how many children to have, and polities deciding whether to promote pro-natalist policies[1]

The members of a family, and of a polity, have to allocate resources among themselves. Utilitarianism says that the welfare of each member should be given equal weight. In deciding whether to bring an additional child into existence, its necessary to compare two situations

(i) the child is born, and has an equal weight with everyone else; or

(ii) the child isnt born, and all the current members of the group are weighted equally

Its nonsensical in case (ii) to add in some extra weight to the hypothetical child who doesnt exist. And its clear, to me at any rate, that if everyone in case (ii) is better off than everyone in case (i), the correct utilitarian decision is to go with (ii).

This leads to the conclusion that the social order we want is one where average utility is maximized (remembering that utility is a way of comparing allocations, not a real thing).

Another way to reach this conclusion is from behind a Harsanyi/Rawls veil of ignorance where we choose a social order of which we will be a member, without knowing where we will be situated. Theres no way to make this work if we are also supposed to consider the infinite set of possible people who wont come into existence at all.

The counterarguments Ive seen dont impress me. individual who can have massively more utility than anyone else. But, as I showed in my last post, utilitarianism as a political philosophy doesnt work that way. Reductions in the utility of a trillionaire are outwe...

Sports clubs are assorted into separate mens and womens streams and are further splintered into leagues of skill and ability. By extension, are womens domestic abuse hotlines sexist? Is the disability support pension ableist? No. They are government programs addressing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable members of society. Unique problems are treated uniquely. The division the Voice makes is analogical but in a significantly, assiduously constructed, and expanded fashion.

It begs the question, what do we mean by Indigenous Australian if it is not based on race? And how can we justify their unique treatment?

Firstly, we need reminding that the Voice has been worked on and picked over by constitutional lawyers, politicians, and Indigenous representatives from across the country since 2015. And more recently, the Joint Select Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice Referendum addressed questions opponents of the Voice frequently and disingenuously exploit to sow seeds of uncertainty in an impressionable public.

During the committee hearing, Professor Anne Twomey points out a lawyerly, but clear, distinction. The referendum does not refer to Aboriginal and Indigenous Australians by race, it refers to them by reference to their being Australias first peoples, which is made clear at the start of the referendum question: A Proposed Law to recognise the First Peoples of Australia, and in the proposed law itself: In recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia.

Anne Twomey continued: The provision is there simply because of the status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australias first peoples with the consequences [being their]important role in Australia...

TODAY. Jobs! jobs! jobs! IN THE DEATH INDUSTRY "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Quite suddenly, any vestige of Australia being an independent country has disappeared overnight.

An entire continent has been handed over to the American military machine, by Australias cowardly and self-serving politicians.

And the Australian media exultantly choruses Jobs! Jobs ! Jobs!

I have often wondered why that chorus is repeated endlessly in awed, religious, joy?

If you work in a caring industry, or in nurturing animals, plants, the environment, in growing food or in one of the many jobs that support life you can derive some pride in your work. Its good to be paid some money, but its especially good to be able to derive some dignity, self-respect, genuine joy, in knowing that you are genuinely contributing to well-being to the common good.

Its a matter of integrity dare I mention this? some spiritual satisfaction. You can hold your head up high.

Where is the integrity in making killing machines, things for massacring thousands of people, destroying the land and animals?

The Voice: Careful What You Wish For "IndyWatch Feed National"

Will a Voice to parliament for Australias Indigenous peoples really come from, and represent, the nations most marginalised? Dr Monica Seini weighs in.

We, non-Indigenous Australians, need to turn the lens on ourselves in the debate on the upcoming Referendum on Constitutional recognition of an Indigenous Australian Voice. Will the Referendum prompt us to acknowledge the history of our present, and truly open our ears to an Indigenous voice, whatever that may look like?

I am by no means advising people to vote no, nor am I against a change to the Constitution. I am offering caution.

It will not be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who decide the outcome of the referendum.

Almost 97% of people in Australia are non-Indigenous; hence, those of voting age within this majority will determine the outcome. A year ago, on 30 July 2022, our newly elected Prime Minister Albanese spoke at the Garma Festival on Yolngu Country. The PM encouraged people to vote with their heart and vote Yes.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, pictured speaking at the 2022 Garma Festival in the Northern Territory.

If the Yes vote is successful, we so-called woke folk will be ecstatic. We will pat ourselves on the back for gifting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a Voice regarding their own affairs, on their own Country. Land that has never been ceded. What then?

It will not be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who decide how the Voice will be enacted if the Referendum is successful.

It is the Parliament that will decide how the Voice will look, and sound. According to our Prime Minister: The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws with respect to the composition, functions, powers and procedures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Writing the Voice into the Constitution means a willingness to listen wont depend on who is in government or who is Prime Minister.

We do not, to date, know what The Voice will look or sound like. We can, however, safely assume it will indeed be subject to change depen...

Warner Bros. and Mattel winners as Barbie a 'cash grab'

Despite the polarised debate surrounding Barbie, we should all remember that the film primarily benefits its commercial overlords, writes Dr Binoy Kampmark.

AS THE ancient Greeks reminded us, bone-cold definitions as starting points are essential in any discussion. One current discussion, insignificant to posterity but amusing for advertisers and the presently bored, is the ludicrous reactions to a plastic doll rendered into celluloid form.

And as a doll, it can be no other. Mattels Barbie has become, courtesy of Greta Gerwig, a talking point so silly it deserves to be treated trivially. But money, advertising and Mattel wont allow that.

Commentators, whatever their ilk, cannot help themselves. Evidently struggling to earn a crust or two, Jourdain Searles asks two banal questions

This first:

'In a cinematic landscape drowning in IP, would a live-action film about the Barbie doll, Mattels flagship toy, be held up as proof of the continued commodification of cinema as an artform?'

The second is not much of an improvement:

'And in a more progressive cultural landscape, could a woman-directed film about Barbie dolls be feminist?'

Not necessarily.

The New York Times does not disappoint in its silliness: 'Can a doll with an ingratiating smile, impossible curves and boobs ready for liftoff be a feminist icon?' No, it cannot, but stating something so embarrassingly asinine is very much in character with this field.

Is there an irony in the lizard Oz denouncing the silencing of science, while routinely disappearing climate science and climate change news into the cornfield?

Possibly, but the pond was too overwhelmed to notice. Sunday is a quieter time, a time for a little prattle and a few cartoons and guests overlooked in yesterday's comments section ...

Now there were some doozies. Ramesh Thakur's reference to "sectarian ancestry" was beyond the valley of the fruity.

In ancient times, the pond understood that "sectarian" as a tribal thing, as per the dictionary definition of an excessive attachment to a particular sect or party, especially in religion. Suddenly...

Using sectarian ancestry as the organising principle to add a chapter to the nations foundational governance document will inject the poison of race-based preferential access to parliament and government into the heart of the body politic.

What was even more astonishing was the tag:

Mandala as a MedARTation-a Portal to the Reflective Self. "IndyWatch Feed National"

I have been creating a Mandalas for many years and began by creating colouring pages with affirmations for relaxation for women in domestic violence shelters. Many of those Mandala designs then went on to become my first book The Big Girls Little Colouring Book.

I often think of Mandalas as a kind of portal, an entry point, and by engaging the hands, focusing the mind and relaxing the breath we enter into a non-invasive, relaxed, slightly altered state that can give access to the wisdom of the inner self and ideas and thoughts that are not constrained by every day patterns of thinking.

The following are a few examples of how the Mandala, which is a Sanskrit word meaning Circle, have uses in a wide range of areas specifically related to relaxation, creativity, insight and expanding consciousness:

Rockingham By-Election 2023: How Big A Swing Is Too Big? "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Rockingham (WA) (ALP 37.7%)
By-election for resignation of Mark McGowan (ALP), MP since 1996
CALLED 7:40 pm Magenta Marshall (ALP) retains, may be taken to preferences, second place after preferences unclear.

Live Comments

9:44 The 2PP swing snuck up to 22.5% but I'd say this is only just acceptable for the Liberal Party and still consistent with them being heavy underdogs statewide.

8:40 Not sure if we're getting a 2PP count on the remaining c. 5300 votes that have been counted to primaries tonight.  The 2PP swing currently sits at just below 22%; again, nothing to see there.  If the poll released this week were true and this seat were representative we would be seeing much, much more than this.

7:50 A partial 2PP count has appeared with a swing of only about 15% but I don't know which booths that's from and it might be a tad low.  Also of note here is Legalise Cannabis beating the Greens again (as they did in Fadden) but the LC candidate is a local councillor.  In 2021 in the Legislative Council election the Greens outpolled them 5.59-3.66.

7:40 With the addition of significant postals and prepolls Marshall has obviously won.

7:30 The primary vote swing will be massive (currently about 31%) but because those votes are spraying, the 2PP swing's not so big (it might be currently 21%).  In terms of this as a sign that the Liberals are back in the game, it's pretty borderline so far.

7:12 Across the board swings of 30-35% so far, so while Labor might or might not win on primaries there is still no problem for them here as everyone else is way back on 15% or less.  Edwards is now challenging for second on the primary vote and while her position might not survive postals it is also likely she could pass the Liberals on preferences, so it is not yet clear this is a classic contest.

7:00 A couple more booths with no concern for Labor at all on primaries result-wise but also a big spread of primaries with a high Legalise Cannabis vote so far.

6:53 The first booth is in with the small matter of a 32.2% primary vote swing against Labor - which if continued is harmless in terms of the result but they wouldn't want it to ramp up another 5% or so.  In this booth Edwards has only 10% which is not especially promising though her support may vary across the seat.

6:00 Polls have closed. William Bowe has noted that the WAEC doesn't publish it's indicative 2CP splits until it's confident it has the right top two.

Some live comments (scrolling to top) will be posted during the count, and post-count commentary if the seat remains in doubt.&nbsp...

Rockingham by-election open thread "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

9:15 It looks like weve got most of the 2PP count well get tonight and the swing is sitting on just over 22%, which is pretty substantial but Labor will still retain the seat easily.

8:04 Were getting a 2PP count now, but we dont have a sense of where the booths are coming from. At the moment this count has about half as many votes as the primary vote count and Labor is on 67%, which would be a swing of just over 20%.

7:54 Labor will clearly win this seat. Its not clear what the final margin will be but it should be reasonably safe. The Liberal is currently on 17.65%, trailing Labor on 49.81%. That leaves over 32% of the vote available as preference flows. If those split evenly, that would leave Labor on about 66%. Much less than in 2021, but still very solid.

7:33 The primary vote swing against Labor is generally over 30%, ranging from 29.3% at Safety Bay Senior High School to 37.4% at Hillman PS. But not very much of that swing is going to the Liberals. The swing to the Liberal Party is ranging from 3.1% at Safety Bay PS to 7.9% at East Waikiki PS. Over 10% of the vote has gone to Legalise Cannabis, and over 15% has gone to independents, mostly to Hayley Edwards.

7:16 I hadnt been planning to cover this but I am back home now so I might drop in a few comments.

For now we dont have a 2CP count. So far we have primary vote counts in five out of ten booths. At the moment Labor is on 48.5% of the primary vote, with the Liberal candidate second on 15%. Independent candidate Edwards is very close to the Liberal on 14.8%. Apparently the WAEC will be holding back on the 2CP count until it becomes clearer who will make that count.

6:00 Polls have just closed in the by-election for the Western Australian state seat of Rockingham.

Im out tonight so wont be covering this by-election but feel free to use this post to discuss the results.

The limitarian implications of utilitarianism "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

My fellow Crooked Timber blogger Ingrid Robeyns has long been making the case for limitarianism, that is, the idea that there should be an upper limit on the amount any one person can own or consume. As Ingrid has observed, limitarianism is a constraint, rather than a complete ethical principle, so its important to consider how it interacts with other principles. In the case of utilitarianism, the answer is surprisingly well, at least in (using Ingrids terminology) this and nearby worlds. But understanding this requires a little bit of background and some arithmetic.

Shorter JQ: utilitarianism implies limitarianism. The full argument is over the field (no tricks this time, I promise).

First, utilitarianism is a political philosophy, dealing with the question of how the resources in a community should be distributed. And it starts, as in Bentham, from the assumption that people are sufficiently similar in capability and strength that they must all be taken into account equally. This does not, in itself, imply equality of outcomes or even opportunity, but it rules out notions that some group is inherently deserving of better treatment than others.

Second, (this shouldnt be necessary to state, but it is), there is no such thing as utility. Its a theoretical construct which can be used to compare different allocations of resources, not a number in peoples heads that can be measured and added up. Nonsense about utility monsters and similar is just that.

The practical implication of this is that we need a measure which answers the question: how does the benefit of giving an additional unit of resources to one person compare to the benefit of giving those resources to another. A utility function is a way of answering that question.

There is an ethical judgement here which can be addressed in various ways. We can take a Rawls/Harsanyi original position, rely on introspection or look at peoples choices over time and under uncertainty. None of these are perfect, but most yield one clear conclusion: marginal utility declines with income or, more simply, an extra dollar is worth more to a poor person than to a rich one. But how much more?

The classic answer to this question, going back to Daniel Bernoulli, is that we can think of utility as a logarithmic function of income (or wealth). What that means is that a given proportional increase (or reduction) in income has the same value whoever receives it. Most recent estimates are similar. So, utilitarianism suggests converting everyones income to its logarithm and adding them all up. This may sound mechanical but the implications are striking.

What does this mean for limitarianism? If we take a centibillionaire such as Elon Musk, his wealth is of the order of 10^11. Using base-10 log (it doesnt change anything if you use another...

The push to accelerate the creation of a local missile manufacturing industry in co-operation with the US will be one of the centrepiece announcements at the Australia-United States Ministerial (AUSMIN) consultations on Saturday.

Both US and Australian officials are seeking to play down concerns...

Australias nuclear waste "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

finding a national waste repository is not urgent because it has been stored this way for 60 years.

its not even clear if centralising the waste is the best option. ..theres an implicit risk in transporting the waste from the various sites to a new site, and there should be a safety comparison with leaving it where it is.

Courts have quashed a decision to store water in Kimbra, meaning there is still no centralised repository in the country

Guardian. Tory Shepherd, Sat 29 Jul 2023

More than 20 tonnes of reprocessed nuclear fuel will stay at Australias only reactor in southern Sydney, while nuclear waste will remain scattered in cupboards and filing cabinets around the country, after the federal court blocked plans for a long-term storage site in outback South Australia.

The site in Kimba was selected more than 40 years after Australia started planning for a centralised repository. But this month, that decision was quashed by the courts.

There is currently no live national facility option, and the waste pile is growing.

Successive governments and agencies have said there are more than 100 sites that are storing nuclear waste littered...

Money talks: 109 global institutions restrict investments in nuclear weapons "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Exciting news in the latest PAX-ICAN report Moving away from mass destruction out today: the number of financial institutions across the globe rejecting nuclear weapons keeps growing! The number of financial institutions excluding the nuclear weapons industry from their investments continues to grow year on year, and many are naming the UN nuclear weapons ban treaty as a reason to stop funding the bomb.

The 109 financial institutions profiled in this report know that nuclear weapons represent a systemic reputational and regulatory risk, and are putting policies in place that limit or completely exclude any financial engagement with this controversial industry.

The report shows the financial community is taking a more responsible approach, embracing the positive role they can play in further stigmatising and delegitimizing nuclear weapons. Even with Russias illegal invasion of Ukraine, and skyrocketing defence spending, the financial community is holding a firm line against financing weapons of mass destruction.

These policies do more than simply cut off the funding to the individual companies producing nuclear weapons: they signal that doing business off weapons of mass destruction is not a viable business model particularly now the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is in place.  https://www.dontbankonthebomb.com/policy-analysis-report-moving-away-from-mass-destruction/

US admits to pushing Ukraine into a fight it cant win "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

the operative Western definition of Ukrainian courage, however, is not hard to discern: a willingness to use Ukrainian soldiers as cannon fodder.

the Ukraine war has already yielded a triumphal summer for the NATO alliance.

A US windfall in Ukraine comes at an unfathomable cost.

AARON MAT, JUL 29, 2023  https://mate.substack.com/p/unlocked-us-admits-to-pushing-ukraine?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=100118&post_id=135529420&isFreemail=true&utm_medium=email

Nearly one month into Russias invasion, the New York Times quietly abandoned any pretense that the US aim was to defend Ukraine and bring the war to a quick end. The White House, the Times reported, seeks to help Ukraine lock Russia in a quagmire without inciting a broader conflict with a nuclear-armed adversary or cutting off potential paths to de-escalation.

Eighteen months later, the desired quagmire has been achieved. This is due not only to a massive influx of NATO weaponry, but a Western blockade of every tangible path to de-escalation, most notably the April 2022 Ukraine-Russia peace deal that Boris Johnson nixed.

With a Russian quagmire the overriding goal, the US and its partners have adopted an attendant disregard for the tens of thousands of Ukrainian lives sacrificed for the task.

In the wars early stages, only the most outwardly enthusiastic proxy warriors, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham, could candidly admit that US support ensured that Ukraine would fight to the last person. With Ukraine now struggling to mount a widely hyped counteroffensive, the prevailing indifference to its human toll is more widely acknowledged.

Washingtons looming war against China "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

SOTT Signs of The Times, Michael Hudson, The Unz Review, Sat, 22 Jul 2023

Economic Logic has been Replaced by National Security Overrides

The July NATO summit in Vilnius had the feeling of a funeral, as if they had just lost a family member Ukraine. To clear away NATOs failure to drive Russia out of Ukraine and move NATO right up to the Russian border, its members tried to revive their spirits by mobilizing support for the next great fight against China, which is now designated as their ultimate strategic enemy. To prepare for this showdown, NATO announced a commitment to extend their military presence all the way to the Pacific.

The plan is to carve away Chinas military allies and trading partners, above all Russia, starting with the fight in Ukraine. President Biden has said that this war will be global in scope and will take many decades as it expands to ultimately isolate and break up China.

The U.S.-imposed sanctions against trade with Russia are a dress rehearsal for imposing similar sanctions against China. But only the NATO allies have joined the fight. And instead of wrecking Russias economy and turning the ruble to rubble as President Biden predicted, NATOs sanctions have made it more self-reliant, increasing its balance of payments and international monetary reserves, and hence the rubles exchange rate.

To cap matters, despite the failure of trade and financial sanctions to injure Russia and indeed, despite NATOs failures in Afghanistan and Libya, NATO countries committed themselves to trying the same tactics against China. The world economy is to be split between US/NATO/Five Eyes on the one hand, and the rest of the world the Global Majority on the other. EU Commissioner Joseph Borrell calls this as a split between the US/European Garden (the Golden Billion) and the Jungle threatening to engulf it, like an invasion of its well-manicured lawns by an invasive species.

From an economic vantage point, NATOs behavior since its military buildup to attack Ukraines Russian-speaking eastern states in February 2022 has been a drastic failure. The U.S. plan was to bleed Russia and leave it so economically destitute that its population would revolt, throw Vladimir Putin out of office and restore a pro-Western neoliberal leader who would pry Russia away from its alliance with China and then proceed with Americas grand plan to mobilize Europe to impose sanctions on China..

The US/NATO West has led this global fracture, yet it will be the big loser. NATO members already have seen Ukraine deplete their...

Breakout World Cup star Linda Caicedo may not feature again in the tournament after the Colombian collapsed at training in distressing scenes that were caught on video.

The young gun, 18, was rushed to hospital and was unconscious for at least 90 seconds as medics and terrified team-mates rushed to her aid at the teams base in Sydney.

The rising star was later released from hospital but is unlikely to feature in her countrys match against Germany on Sunday.

Footage shows the star jogging with teammates before she suddenly stops, clutches her chest and falls to the ground.

Concerned players gather around her before a woman who appears to be a member of the training staff sprints to the scene, closely followed by other team staffers, one of whom was carrying a kit bag.

How to Responsibly Dispose of a Mattress "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Disposing of a mattress can be a real pain. They are heavy, bulky and cumbersome. They dont fit in bins or skips and some waste removal companies wont take mattresses.

However, there are a number of convenient (and even eco-friendly) ways to dispose of old, unwanted mattresses. In this guide, well explore different methods for responsibly disposing of a mattress, taking into its type, recycling options, donation opportunities, council hard rubbish pick up, and tips for cleaning if you plan to sell or donate it.

Different Types of Mattresses and Their Impact on Disposal

Before diving into disposal methods, its essential to understand the types of mattresses and their materials. The three most common mattress types are innerspring, memory foam, and latex.

Innerspring Mattresses: These traditional mattresses have steel coils inside, making them heavier and harder to recycle. Disassembling them can be a challenge, and not all recycling centres accept them.

Memory Foam Mattresses: Memory foam mattresses are known for their comfort and support. They are typically more recyclable than innerspring mattresses, as they contain fewer components that need separation.

Latex Mattresses: Latex mattresses are made from natural or synthetic latex, which is more eco-friendly than other materials. They are generally biodegradable and can be an excellent choice for those concerned about sustainability.

Considering the materials in your mattress can help you choose the most environmentally friendly disposal method.

Council Hard Rubbish Pick Up

Council hard rubbish pick up is a convenient way to dispose of large household items, including mattresses. Check with your local council for scheduled hard rubbish collection days and guidelines for mattress disposal. However, keep in mind that not all councils offer this service, and some may charge fees for the collection.

Waste Collection Companies

For a small fee, many waste collection companies will collect old mattresses. As with hard rubbish pick-up, its as easy as scheduling a collection time and leaving the mattress in the designated pick-up area, and the waste collection company will do the rest.

Mattress Recycling Companies

Recycling your old mattress is one of the best ways to ensure it doesnt end up in a landfill. Fortunately, there are mattress recycling companies that specialise in breaking down mattresses into their individual components for reuse.

Before contacting a recycling company, ensure that they accept the type of mattress you have. Some facilities may focus on specific materials and may not be equ...

Mass Liability Cases Busting Smart Meters, Vax Mandates, Green Power (Digital Banking Next?) "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

All they (the secret corporations masquerading as government) want is money, not justice Cal Washington, co-founder InPower

There are so many stories of all-powerful government oppressing the isolated individual in the past three years that can make one depressed and apathetic. But the real-life story of a Christian construction contractor in Canada trying to figure out how to beat predatory divorce court system has spawned a grass roots legal education movement called InPower that gives citizens tools and information as to how to win over tyrannical courts, hospitals banks, energy companies and green power cooperatives.  This effort has resulted in ten top judges, government officials and public utility officers around the world stepping down from their positions for fear of massive financial liability, including the top un-elected official in Canada and the premier of Western Australia. Say what?! Read on.

After some failures and unanticipated successes over the last five years, InPowers legal method is now moving into stopping the assumed compulsory installation of smart meters, vaccine mandates, and obtaining settlements for mysterious fire storms on homes with smart meters installed.  Maybe stopping the roll out of digital banking will be next?  After all the bad news it is almost unbelievable.

Cal Washington and two other partners have founded InPower, a non-lawyer, self-help legal education organization to assist local groups around the world to use the hidden legal structure of corporations, masquerading as government, against themselves.  InPower is not a profit-making enterprise but a membership organization.  To get this far, Washington has over the past 10 years had to endure seemingly un-ending divorce court proceedings, shake downs by double-dealing lawyers on both sides who worked against him to enrich themselves and jail sentences to intimidate him to drop his legal cases.  Washington is not some hateful radical but a mild mannered, rational person who is apparently motivated out of religious values.

Why InPower Works

Washington explains that the breakthrough for him in his understanding of how the legal system works was when he took a course in commerce law. Through this course he discovered that most government agencies and courts are corporations, not government entities, including the USA and your local incorporated city (not charter cities).  As we are painfully finding out, private corporations like Twitter and Google are not bound by the US Constitution or the Bill of Rights guaranteeing its users free speech.  Neither are the courts, your local public health department, and many other agencies that Washington says masquerade as government entities. And, like all cor...

For Goodness Sake "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Some years ago, in Australia, I appeared on a platform with a prominent intellectual, many times more famous than I. We were asked what it took to be good.

The famous intellectual, who had had a brilliant career, answered that in order to be good, you had to be intelligent. When my turn came to answer, I said that the previous answer was not only wrong in fact but appalling in its implications.

It seemed to me, I said, that there was no connection between intelligence and goodness, and since the previous speaker was obviously referring to the 1 percent of the population or so that she thought might be approximately her intellectual equal, she was in effect saying that the vast majority of human beings could not be good. I count myself a misanthrope, but I am not as misanthropic as that.

She tried to deny that she had said any such thing, but the audience corrected her: She had indeed said it, and, without resorting to Freudian analysis, I think it revealed her true belief in the matter.

I know what she meant, however. To be good, you must have the right opinions about important abstract questions affecting humanity, and to have those you must be well-informed and capable of drawing correct conclusions from a large amount of information. In short, to be good you must both be highly intelligent and agree with me.

The intelligent are much given to the sin of pride, a sin that is not shared, in my experience, by the truly brilliant. Charles Dickens, for example, who knew himself to be a man of genius and called himself the Inimitable (which he certainly was), once wrote that he held his talent in trust. He meant by this that it was God-given and he had a duty to use it for the benefit of mankind. Few people have worked harder than he, but no amount of effort by itself would have sufficed to produce so many immortal characters and pages. For reasons that will never be elucidated, he was born with a spark that the rest of us do not have.

The idea of goodness as having the right ideas on abstract questions is a godsend to mediocrities. It allows them to learn and repeat a few phrases or formulae and think that they are good and therefore ought to have a special role to play in the direction of society.

I have no disdain for mediocrity and mediocrities as such; they are, indeed, very necessary to the functioning of any society, as is hypocrisy. (Try to imagine a world without hypocrisyhow dull, frightening, and unbearable it would be! There is, of course, hypocrisy and hypocrisy, of the laudable and necessary, and of the abominable and dangerous, kind, with everything in between.)

Mediocrity is very well in its place; among other things, it oils the wheels of administration. Much has to be done routinely, and if everyone were constantly brimming with brilliant ideas demanding that they be put immediately into practice, chaos would result. Besides, many people like to lead their lives....

The Green Fraud: How Climate Alarmists Are Scamming You (Part Three) "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

The nature and causes of climate change are a worthy challenge for the best scientists using the most sophisticated tools available. Unfortunately, the study of climate change has been co-opted by pseudoscientists using flawed models, rigged data, and hyperbolic claims echoed by ill-informed media and politicians with hidden agendas.

Among the best-known boosters of climate alarm are Gillian Tett at the Financial Times and BlackRocks Laurence Larry D Fink.

Fortunately, there are rigorous scientists using hard data and robust models to address the phenomenon. This more scientific group includes Michael Shellenberger, Steven E Koonin, Bjrn Lomborg, Bruce C Bunker, MJ Sangster, and many more.

These sober voices mostly agree that slight global warming is detectable, but its not a crisis and will not become a crisis in the foreseeable future.

They concur that its unclear whether CO2 emissions are the main cause of warming, even if they are a contributing cause. They point to other causes including solar cycles, ocean salinity, ocean currents like El Nio and La Nina, cloud cover, aerosols, volcanoes, agricultural practices, and natural methane release.

There are also numerous official reports that reach the same conclusion. Although, you may have to scan the footnotes to discover that official reports produce scary headlines heavily diluted by detailed content.

The single most important contribution of real scientists is to demonstrate how badly flawed the models used by the climate alarmists are.

A climate model divides the surface of the planet into a grid with squares of about 360 square miles (932 square kilometres) each over land surfaces, and 36 square miles (92 square kilometres) each over the oceans.

Thats about 101 million squares. Each square is extrapolated into a stack about 30 miles (70 kilometres) high to the outer edge of the stratosphere. All weather occurs in this zone, with most weather occurring within 10 miles (26 kilometres) of the earths surface in the troposphere.

The vertical stacks are sliced horizontally into thin layers like pancakes, and each layer is analysed separately for climate conditions in that slice, the impact of such conditions on adjacent pancakes in adjacent stacks, and so on. One must model this activity to a first approximation before getting to recursive functions.

If each pancake is one mile thick, that comes to 3.03 billion pancakes. Analysing one pancake is tricky. Analysing 3.03 billion pancakes is mind-boggling. Analysing the interaction of each of the 3.03 billion pancakes with each of the other 3.03 billion pancakes, even allowing for attenuated interaction at a distance, is a super-linear function that borders on the impossible in terms of computational complexity!

One scientist estimates that if we had supercomputers 1000 times faster than todays computers, the run time on the problem described above wo...

The Marginal Analysis That Undermines Wind and Solar Power "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

The second most important concept in economics, behind scarcity, is the idea of marginal analysis. Humans make decisions based on increments, not absolutes.

We do not ask at the outset of a meal, How many slices of pie should I eat? We ask, Should I eat another slice of pie? At least, thats how we make the actual decision.

Thats because each additional slice has slightly less benefit and slightly more cost each time. We continue to eat until the cost of another slice outweighs the benefitsin the case of pies, literally.

Renewable energy upends how this idea of marginal change is applied to our electricity system. Thats because there is almost no marginal cost to producing energy for wind and solar. Almost all the cost is upfront in the initial manufacture and setup. This risks a sunk cost a solar or wind farm that cost a lot of money to build, but which produces unneeded electricity.

Contrast renewables with a power system that uses fossil fuels, and the issue becomes more obvious. Fossil fuel power requires applying more or less fuel to produce more or less energy. The marginal cost and the marginal benefit have a direct relationship with each other. This encourages efficiency and stable production.

It also keeps power prices stable over time. If less energy is needed, less fuel is used. So, the cost of fuel supply and the revenue earned from demand are inextricably linked. They balance.

Power producers conduct a marginal analysis each time they consider producing more or less power. Should I add another tonne of coal or Btu of gas? What does it cost me and what revenue does it earn me?

As the cost of resources rises with demand, the price of electricity falls with rising supply, until the twain shall meet at the mythical equilibrium of supply and demand.

It is unlikely too much electricity will be produced in a fossil fuel system because it costs someone something they make a loss. Also, resources are not wasted because demand and supply can be matched easily by adjusting how much fuel is used.

But we are increasingly moving to a solar and wind system that does not bear the same link between cost and revenue, in a variety of ways. And precisely the consequences a marginal analysis economist would expect are emerging

The Australian Financial Review sums it up:

Power prices surged to their second-highest March quarter in 18 years, despite a glut of solar and wind production that sent prices into the negative during the middle of the day, according to a new report.

Second most expensive while negative for much of the day!? What a combination. A glut of power and high prices something only a government could achieve.

In SA, which is at the vanguard of the global energy transition, wholesale power prices were negative for 17% of the time, and 29% of the time between 9...

Swimming in Circles: Aquaculture and the End of Wild Oceans "IndyWatch Feed National"

Editor's Note: This article is a reprint. It was originally published September 30, 2018.

In this interview, investigative journalist and fishing industry insider Paul Molyneaux discusses aquaculture and the dangers of farmed fish, which are also the topics of his book "Swimming in Circles: Aquaculture and the End of Wild Oceans."

From my perspective, the two most dangerous foods served in most restaurants are factory farmed chicken, which is responsible for a majority of foodborne illnesses, and farmed fish, especially farmed salmon, which is among the most toxic foods on the planet.

Salmon Farming in Cobscook Bay

At the age of 17, Molyneaux left home and got a job in commercial fishing, which led to work in aquaculture in the late '70s.

"I always had an interest in aquaculture, although I primarily was a commercial fisherman. In the late '80s, I ran a fish processing plant for the Passamaquoddy tribe in Eastport, Maine, on Cobscook Bay. There was a sudden push to do salmon farming in the bay.

The way the promoters at the time, a company called Ocean Products sold it to us was [by] saying, 'You can become farmers of the sea. You can start giving back to the ocean.' We bought it hook, line and sinker Last summer, there were about six of us standing on the dock in Eastport, saying, 'Geez, we thought this was going to be great.'"

As fisheries had dwindled, they believed aquafarming would be the answer to keeping the fishing industry alive. Alas, the industry was rapidly consolidated into the hands of just a few players. "Now, it's in the hands of one," Molyneaux says.

What's worse, it didn't take long before the environmental downsides of aquaculture became readily apparent as well. In the late 1990s, infectious salmon anemia virus spread like wildfire among the salmon pens in Cobscook Bay, wiping out the fishery as 2 million fish had to be discarded overnight.

"That set the industry back. Now, it's owned by one company Cooke Aquaculture and pretty much everything is automated. They have a tremendous sea lice problem.

They're pouring tons of SLICE into those pens, and they're coming up with new systems now because they're finding the sea lice medication is now in the mollusks, like the scallops that are also harvested from the bay. Cooke has been fined twice in the last five years for using an illegal chemical, cypermethrin, to fight sea lice."

Sporadic Reports of Malaria Followed by Breakthrough Announcement of mRNA Vaccine "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

By Peter A. McCullough, MD, MPH | Courageous Discourse  | July 26, 2023

As an internal medicine physician and cardiologist I am in tune to diseases seen and presented at morning report at big academic medical centers. I can tell you over the decades each year there are a few cases of malaria. Travel history and contact tracing are never precise enough to declare where it came from. Malaria gives us a chance to talk about the characteristic life cycle of organism (plasmodium species), the mosquito vector, use of diagnostic testing including the blood smear etc.

So I was suspicious a few days ago when I heard about malaria in the U.S. as making a comeback and some patients asking me about bug spray. Now I see why there could be a manufactured interest in the age-old illness that is well treated with medicationsa mRNA vaccine.

Alexa Cook at NewsHub is reporting: A team of researchers from Victoria University of Wellingtons Ferrier Research Institute, the Malaghan Institute and the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Australia have developed an mRNA-based vaccine that can effectively target and stimulate protective immune cell responses against the malaria-causing parasite.

Fecal microbiota transplantation in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus. "IndyWatch Feed National"

PMID:  J Autoimmun. 2023 May 11:103058. Epub 2023 May 11. PMID: 37179170 Abstract Title:  Fecal microbiota transplantation in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus: What we learnt from the explorative clinical trial. Abstract:  Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with the characterized presence of autoantibodies and resulting in multiple organ damage, which is incurable and can be lethal. The current treatments are limited and less progress has been made in drug discovery for the last few decades. Researches imply that gut dysbiosis exists in both patients and murine models with SLE, taking part in the pathogenesis of SLE through multiple mechanisms such as microbiota translocation and molecular mimicry. Intestinal interventions on the gut microbiome by fecal transplantations to reconstitute the gut-immunity homeostasis serve as a novel therapeutic option for SLE patients. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), which is usually used in intestinal diseases, has been firstly demonstrated to be safe and efficient in recovering gut microbiota structure of SLE patients and reducing lupus activity in our recent clinical trial, which is the first trial testing FMT therapy in SLE treatment. In this paper, we reviewed the results of the single-arm clinical trial and made recommendations on FMT practice in SLE treatment including therapeutic indications, screening items and dosage regimen, trying to provide references for future study and clinical practice. We also came up with the unanswered questions that need to be solved by the ongoing randomized controlled trial as well as the future expectations for the intestinal intervention strategies of SLE patients.

Weird Musks weird obsession with X "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Twitter owner Elon Musk has abruptly renamed the company as simply X. He had earlier named his first company X.com. Jill Lepore writes that Musk has long had a fascination with this particular letter, that can be traced back to his father and grandfather who were leaders of a so-called Technocracy movement and called themselves Technocrats and believed that only engineers and scientists could save the world from a looming catastrophe.

Technocrats objected to politicians and economists, democracy, and socialism. They wanted an end to all banks. In the future that Technocrats including Musks grandfather were planning for,There will be no place for Politics or Politicians, Finance or Financiers, Rackets or Racketeers. There would also be no place for personal names. One technocrat, for instance, renamed himself 1x1809x56. Musk named one of his sons X A-12X, for short.

Why name a baby X A-12, something that is going to result in the child being tormented by their peers and likely require years of therapy as an adult? This whole business of parents trying to give their children weird names to make some ideological point seems to be sheer vanity, seeing the child as a vehicle for their own obsessions and ignoring their needs. I am really glad that my parents gave me an utterly common name. As least it is common in Sri Lanka though, because it is simple enough, it is only a little exotic now that I am in the US.

But Musk has big plans for the company that he now has renamed X, seeing it as the precursor to an everything app, whatever the hell that is.

X, Musk promises, will be the everything app. X is the Technocrats dream deferred, a way to engineer society, the economy, and politics. Extreme capitalismMuskismas the answer to existential risk. With any luck, it will be a disaster.

I hope so too.

In the very early hours on Tuesday 25 July, United States Air Force (USAF) Lockheed AC-130J Ghostrider gunship Hercules aircraft identified as 18-5905 as "Jackal 92" was noted departing Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) Airport for RAAF Base Richmond. It seems to have flown up from there earlier around midnight.

File photo

As mentioned, it is one of two USAF AC-130J Ghostrider Hercs - 18-5891 "Jackal 93" is the second - that have been in Australia for a few weeks, based at Richmond and flying with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during the recently completed Exercise Teak Action.  They are flown by the United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) 17th Special Operations Squadron (17th SOS) from Clovis Air Base, New Mexico.

Meanwhile, also on Tuesday 25 July, there was at least two more visits into Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) Airport by United States Air Force (USAF) Lockheed MC-130J Commando II Hercules of the 1st Special Operations Squadron (1 SOS).  20-5946 as "Rogue 76" and 11-5731 as "Rogue 71" looked to both visit Prosie from RAAF Base Richmond.

Finally, late on Monday 24 July, a really unique visitor which was believed to also arrive into Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) Airport after ferrying all the way up from RAAF Base Richmond via RAAF Base Amberley, was a United States Army (US Army) Boeing MH-47G Chinook Special Operations Helicopter which was heard to be flying as "Thunder 11".

The MH-47G is a special operations variant of the CH-47 Chinook multi-role, heavy-lift helicopter.  It is in service with the US Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOC).  It is believed that there is a second MH-47G also at Richmond.

Both me and my partner grew up in country Victoria/Melbourne. Currently living in a large city in country Victoria, but Townsville is twice the size. I do have a sister in cairns, but we would be pretty much leaving everyone else we know or are related to back in Victoria. We could sell our house and make enough profit to buy something special in Townsville, with a pool. Everytime Ive been up north, Ive felt its where I should be. The most recent last October we did a cruise from Sydney to Airlie beach, cairns and port Douglas. Im scared to take the plunge, its a big deal we have children too. But I feel if we dont do it now , we never will (both approaching 40) I just want to know options whether to do it or not . The reasons we choose Townsville are: Weather, jobs (my partner works in the mining industry and Im in disability), beauty and things to do, seems theres a awesome night life, magnetic island, military presence ( we are into that - go to air shows etc) Should we come :)

Words Matter. Language Creates Atmosphere. "IndyWatch Feed National"

When I began working in homeless shelters and community settings in the 1980s the homeless and domestic violence sectors had not come to the attention of academia. There was very little research into homelessness, e.g it was not until the early 90s that the accompanying children of the homeless women who came to our shelters were counted in the governments data collection.

But by the mid-90s everything had changed and for the first time researchers began to arrive at homeless and domestic violence shelters with questionnaires and exercises they had designed to assess issues such as infant maternal attachment or as we would say whether the new mum is finding it difficult to adjust.

What was very apparent was the different language spoken by academia as opposed to the every day language and communication amongst staff and residents of the Shelter and wider community.

The following is an example of everyday language that we might use to promote a community event and then how it would sound when put through the filter of academic language.

It is a playful, slightly subversive protest about the impact of how academia developed an exclusive language that then becomes mandatory for report writing and communication amongst service providers but in doing so creates in.

The language both excludes them and conceals the heart and soul of the everyday life of a homeless shelter or community group.

Informal Familiar Language: Hey there, everyone in the neighbourhood! Weve got something really exciting coming up, you might have heard staff talking about it lately. South African group sues government for Covid-19 vaccines contract details "IndyWatch Feed National"

28 July, 2023: Despite widespread calls for transparency, to this day, nearly all publicly funded Covid-19 vaccine procurement contracts remain confidential. This lack of transparency has been criticised as one of the most significant barriers to vaccine equity, a violation of international human rights standards and, often, a breach of domestic transparency regulation.

A 2019 report by Transparency International found that only 7% of Covid contracts have been made publicly available, of those that have been released, most of the crucial information has been redacted.

Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) have prevented governments from releasing details of their Covid-19 vaccine deals. This protects the interests of vaccine companies and means that the details of high prices of vaccines and rules that give these companies monopoly rights to keep charging these prices for 20 years. While NDAs are relatively common practice in medical contracts, the level of secrecy required for Covid-19 deals is unprecedented. Pharmaceutical companies conditioned release of vaccines on signing NDAs, leaving even powerful nation blocs like the European Union with little choice but to sign.

In response to the multiple reports of corruption in health procurement and misuse of pandemic response funds, South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has promised greater transparency. However, non-profit group, Health Justice Initiative is arguing that this has yet to be delivered. It is taking the government to court to find out the details of South Africas procurement of publicly funded Covid-19 vaccines.

Health Justice Initiative joined the criticism of Covid-19 procurement NDAs for enabling pharmaceutical companies to set prices. AstraZeneca reportedly sold vaccines to South Africa at 2.5 times the price per dose that European governments paid.

NDAs can also include secret indemnity for any health risks that arise from the vaccine injections, including possibly against negligence, and redact delivery schedules, protecting big pharmaceutical companies from liability. With no transparency about exactly what the NDAs include, it is hard to assess the reasonableness of the terms.

Premiere: Adelaide trailblazers Loopole ignite the post-punk scene with new single Candles "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Since their formation in 2020, Loopole, have wasted no time in making a quick name for themselves. Even with Covid plaguing their first few years of tenure restricting the Adelaide-based rockers from touring as extensively as they would have liked to the group still managed to mark themselves as favourites amongst the triple i unearthed crowd, earning high praise after the release of dreamy indie-rock numbers such as Belong and State of Mind.

But while it seems evident that the upstarts have been onto a winning formula since day dot, theyve decided to shake things up a bit with their newest release, Candles.

Highlighting a newfound sense of urgency to their sound, Candles, released 28 July, sees Loopole migrating head first into the realm of garage-rock, pushing the boundaries of post-punk experimentation through flurries of distorted dissonance, razor-wire guitar licks, and driving punk-based percussive grooves.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

As stated by the groups newest addition, Finn McCole (guitar), Our individual music tastes have diversified a lot, it feels like we arent trying to shoot for a specific sound or genre as much.

This is shown both instrumentally and lyrically with Candles channelling underlying themes about the groups frustration of feeling enslaved to others expectations and how in turn those expectations can mask others from seeing who they really are. Merge that with Nick Edsons powerful rally-call vocals, and youll undoubtedly feel the authenticity behind Candles evocative message.
