Anti-Voice Propaganda: A Response "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The week before last, a remarkable piece of political propaganda found its way into my mailbox. Jewish Voice for Labour embraces the Palestine lab "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

A great review of my new book, The Palestine Laboratory, by Andrew Hornung for the UKs Jewish Voice for Labour:

Loewensteins great contribution is to pull together a vast trove of information about this sector, its activities, its origins, its power and its effects. The books central idea, reflected in its title, is that Israels expertise in this area indeed, its Unique Selling Point derives from its use as a tool in supressing the struggle for Palestinian rights, in particular in the Occupied Territories. If facial recognition technology can be successfully used in Hebron to monitor Palestinians, why not use it in South America, in Myanmar or Uganda?

WA redistribution follow-up analysis "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

I wrote a quick blog post yesterday after the release of the draft electoral map for the next Western Australian state election. Now Im back with a more detailed analysis of what has changed. Ive included a map comparing the old and new boundaries, as well as my estimates of the primary vote for the larger parties.

I made a few minor tweaks to my redistribution code overnight. This caused some small changes to the margins, but Ive updated the table in yesterdays post.

By my estimate, 86.9% of voters remain in the same seat that they were in prior to the redistribution.

No changes were made to Bateman, Bunbury, Kingsley, Rockingham, South Perth and Southern River. While there was rather a lot of new area added to Kimberley, I estimate the new population makes up just 0.4% of the total.

The new seat of Mid West is primarily a successor to Moore. 76.5% of the enrolment in the new seat comes from Moore, with just 23.5% coming from North West Central. I think its fair to say that North West Central was abolished.

There are some dramatic changes in the outer suburbs of Perth which become obvious when you look at a list of what proportion of each new seats electors have come from another seat.

The renamed seat of Padbury is a successor to Carine, but only 51.7% of electors came from Carine. The neighbouring seat of Hillarys was also severely redrawn, only containing 53.2% of its prior population. This is easy to see on the map: Carine and Hillarys were previously seats that were roughly square-shaped, with Hillarys sitting to the north of Carine on the north coast of Perth, but they have been redrawn into two thin rectangles covering the same area. Judging by the comments on yesterdays post, I suspect that change will be subject to challenges.

At the other end of the metropolitan region, the southern seat of Kwinana shifted south, and only 54.8% of its new enrolment was already in the seat.

The equivalent metric was just 69.6% in Jandakot, 71.7% in Bibra Lake (replacing Willagee) and 72.7% in Baldivis. All other seats had 75% or more.

Now I wanted to turn my focus to the political impact. Yesterday I pointed out that the newly created seat of Oakford is a Labor seat with a 28% margin, while the Nationals seat of North West Central was abolished. The super-marginal Labor seat of Churchlands flipped from Labor to Liberal, so the net number of Labor seats is steady at 53, while the Liberals have gained one seat net from the Nationals, so they each hold three.

But this is not particularly interesting, since the last election was so unusual. Its more interesting to consider what would happen if there was a swing back towards a more competitive outcome.

Of course, a swing would not be uniform, but its the best we have.

For the Liberals and Nationals to gain the 24...

Onion recipes to spare you the tears "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Onion recipes to spare you the tears

For those of you who can't stand crying over chopped onions, here's some news to help wipe the tears away. Along with a couple of onion recipes by Megan Jane de Paulo guaranteed to create a dish that will make crying the last thing on your mind.

YOU CANT MAKE an omelette without breaking eggs, you cant cut onions without a decent cry... or so was thought.

An onion producer in South Australia, Dolling Produce, claims it has been cross-breeding onion varieties over the last 30 years to produce the Happy Chop a variety of brown onion that doesnt reduce the chopper to tears.

Its not a new concept  similar varieties were launched in Japan in 2016, the U.S. after that and last year in the UK. They have not appeared to have taken the culinary world by storm.

Why do these delicious piquant orbs lash out at us so viciously?

(Image supplied)

Onions produce the chemical irritant known as syn-Propanethial-S-oxide, which is released when they are cut, causing the nerves around the eyes (lacrimal glands) to become irritated. Within each onion cell, there's a little glob filled with enzymes. When you bite or cut into an onion, these enzyme-filled blobs break open, releasing their contents which then mix with other chemicals to form syn-Propanethial-S-oxide.

Presumably, the Happy Chop has been bred to reduce this effect, but of course, this begs the question of how it affects the taste.

Tony Abbott will be gleefully chomping down on these unpeeled and raw. They have the look and crisp texture of onion but without that immediately evocative scent of the beginnings of a delightful bolognese or the promise of a lush beef bourguignon. They also taste much sweeter than that of your usual brown onion.

Once you peel away the layers...

The Green Fraud: How Climate Alarmists Are Scamming You (Part Two) "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

This is being enabled by a senile Joe Biden and thousands of bureaucrats buried in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy (DOE), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and scores of other agencies.

The US Treasury, SEC, and the Federal Reserve have even joined in by regulating loans to the oil and gas industry, as well as requiring financial disclosures about climate change and other ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics.

The World Bank (controlled by the US) is being encouraged to deny loans to industries that involve carbon-based development and to steer financing toward projects approved by the climate mavens. This is called the all of government approach, in which every agency gets involved in pushing the climate agenda, even if its not the primary job of that agency. The pressure never stops.

In short, the climate change debate could not be more relevant to investors. Those calling the shots in the Green New Deal (what I call the Green New Scam) will decide which industries win or lose, which projects get financed (or not), which initiatives are subsidised by the government or left to wither on the vine, and which companies will feel the regulatory heat if they dont get with Bidens programs. Climate change is not a sideshow. Nothing is more relevant to markets, investors, and asset allocators today.

A Cobra Has Eaten Your Super "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Is the Australian superannuation system designed to fund your retirement or fund managers lifestyles?

Its a trick question, of course. The correct answer is that it doesnt matter what a government policy is designed to do. It always does the opposite anyway a phenomenon that economists call the Cobra Effect.

As the story goes, the British Government in Delhi decided to get rid of cobras by offering a bounty for cobra skins. The result was a vast increase in the cobra breeding industry

Even the British Government eventually figured out what was going on and closed the subsidy program. And so, the cobra breeders, no doubt caught up in a frenzy of animal rights environmentalism, freed their stock back into its natural habitat, causing a flood of cobras on the streets of Delhi.

Thus, the government programs intention to reduce the number of cobras resulted in a cobra plague. And so itll be for the superannuation industry too, Ive always said.

Now, Id just like to mention that the sound of a hissing cobra once caused me to be so petrified that I couldnt even manage to wet my pants.

That is probably how the superannuation industry is feeling right now too. You see, the super industry forgot that the Baby Boomer generation would eventually like its money backbut somebody at the regulator just reminded them.

Super funds slammed over failure to plan for Boomer retirement wave, reports The Australian Financial Review. This is despite the law requiring them to help members plan for their super withdrawals to fund retirement.

Yes, according to the regulators tasked with making sure the super industry follows the rules, the super industry is not following the rules.

You and I might think this requires the regulators to experience some form of accountability for not doing their job. But thats just not how the Cobra Effect works. Its always the man on the street who gets bitten on the bum by the consequences of government policies.

Now Im sure it comes as a complete shock to people in the finance industry that people might want their money back at some point.

Then again, fund managers from Bernie Madoff to the UKs superstar stock-picker Neil Woodford have always struggled with the concept. Not to mention banks, like those which failed in the US this year when depositors wanted their money back.

So, Australias superannuation industry probably thought their gravy train of compulsory savings they kept safely out of our reach would go on forever.

But, yes, people will eventually withdraw money from a retirement savings systemif they can.

The trouble is that, when it comes to super, this implies selling the assets in the fundand that means fewer assets under management for the fundiesand that means fewer fees for fundies

Uh oh

But it gets worse. The premise of the super system is that its many savers an...

Australian mainstream media is irretrievably broken "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Australian mainstream media is irretrievably broken

The latest example of media bias and a lack of journalistic integrity in Australia follows Dan Andrews' decision to cancel the Commonwealth Games, writes Belinda Jones.

VICTORIAN PREMIER Daniel Andrews did it again this week. He outraged the Australian media by cancelling the 2026 Commonwealth Games because of cost blowouts and predictably, the immature Melbourne press pack lost their collective minds.

If the 2026 Commonwealth Games had gone ahead and blown out by 300%, that same press pack would have also lost their collective minds because of that.

Everyone knows that everything in life has increased in price over the last few years, from fuel to groceries to houses, so it stands to reason that major infrastructure projects will also suffer the same fate and have cost blowouts. It is happening in every home, industry and business in the country  everyone has had to make the tough decisions about what has to be cut from the budget and what can be left in.

Yet, when it happens to a government, mainstream media journalists see it as an opportunity for an irrational, partisan attack rather than view it through the same lens with which they view their own personal or business budgets. Even the ABC has had to make tough cuts due to budgetary pressures, including hundreds of jobs.

ABC News ran over-the-top, tabloid-style criticism of the Andrews Government for making the decision to scrap the expensive Games in multiple attack pieces across multiple platforms.

ABCs 7.30 anchor, Sarah Ferguson, piled on the outrage in an interview with Commonwealth Games Federation (...

Trouble in feminist paradise "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

I saw an interview with the cast of the newly released Barbie film and it demonstrated that feminism is still really a creature of political liberalism.

In the interview there is a discussion of what it means to be a Ken, i.e. one of the male dolls. Two responses were given, both of some interest.

Kate McKinnon, who plays "weird Barbie" in the film, pushed the idea that the point is to reject gender roles altogether. She said "Gender roles deny people half their humanity...we just need to be ourselves". The journalist commenting on this agreed and wrote:

Thats the point, plain and simple: Trying to shove oneself into a category or box, rather than simply being yourself and letting people apply adjectives to you as they see fit, limits yourself as a human being.

Rather than thinking about whether theyre acting like a Ken or acting like a Barbie, people should simply worry whether they are acting like themselves that is how you truly come alive.

This is simply liberalism applied to the issue of our sex. Liberalism wants to maximise our individual autonomy, understood to mean our ability to self-determine or self-define who we are and what we do. Therefore, pre-determined characteristics, such as our sex, are thought of negatively as limitations that should be made not to matter.

Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie

One of the problems with this view is that it makes who we are less meaningful. In the pre-liberal understanding, I as a man get to embody the masculine, which exists as a meaningful category within reality (an "essence"), which then means that my identity and role as a man is connected to a larger, transcendent good that I can strive toward as an ideal.

What liberalism replaces this with is a notion that our sex is not meaningful in this way, but rather I am just me, not connected to anything outside of my own self. I could be one thing or I could be another, and either way it w...

Grey nomads "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Grey nomads

This short story is an *IA Writing Competition (fiction category) entry.

The fold-up table was positioned in front of the gleaming Winnebago, blocking an inviting dawn with a sun that had pretty much decided to provide a showcase kind of a day, as it brushed the ocean. Reds and oranges twirled kaleidoscope-like on the horizon, with the colours dissipating across the water to waves gently massaging the beach. Beyond the whitewash, a pod of dolphins went about their morning constitutional swim across the bay.

Old mates eyes strayed from the Winnebago to the days planning before him. A hard copy map was spread out in tablecloth fashion, a laptop, iPad and mobile phone were all within easy reach and a thick bunch of discount dockets were paper clipped and to the side next to his reading glasses.

The sun now filtered through the adjacent bush and kookaburras again mistook the morning for a late-night party.

With the focus of a military general, old mate flicked from the iPad to the laptop and with different coloured highlighters and pens, would make a note on the hard copy map. He fingered through the discount dockets and made entries on the satellite navigation app on his phone. The ritual was punctuated with the odd extra deep breath and the intermittent a-ha. He changed glasses often and wiped away the tiny beads of sweat on his forehead with his handkerchief and used the palm of his hand to remind the little remaining grey hair to stay on his head.

After a while, he stretched and looked across at the Winnebago and took in the breadth of its enormity. He smiled at the sum total of his life and made mental notes about oil and tyre pressures and fantasised about the latest accessories in Motorhome Monthly magazine. The hilarity of the kookaburras jolted him back to his planning.

His wife strolled over with a cup of tea and a cup of hot water and placed both on the edge of the table. He rubbed his chin, picked the teabag from her cup of tea and placed it in his cup of hot water.

Getting there, love. Getting there. Almost got the day sorted.

She moved to the front of the Winnebago, for a panoramic view of the ocean, gently sucked in the salt air and afforded herself a half smile about their long-planned trip around Australia. They had both worked hard, the kids had well and truly left home, the superannuation was adequate, the fortnightly pension certain and their health... well, their health was pretty much linked to her husband&r...

Choices "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Writing in The Post, David Cormack contrasts the trivial nature of much recent political "journalism" with the substantive issues those same journalists are ignoring. Workplace dogs! Politicians drinking! Statistical whataboutism! Versus poverty, domestic violence, covid, and climate change. And ultimately, he compares this with the trivial nature of our politics - "tinkering around the edges... student politicians playing grown-ups". But behind the trivia, there's some very real choices we're making:

All of the above issues hurt the individual. The individuals they hurt tend to be those at the lower end of the socio-economic ladder. And all of those issues have solutions that politicians all around the world actively choose to not do.

Which means all of those problems are a choice. We choose to let families go hungry. We choose to not divest from fossil fuels. We choose to allow capitalism to run unfettered, ruining huge numbers of lives as it makes a small number of people unfathomably and unnecessarily wealthy. We then choose to not tax them fairly.

[...]

We choose to shake our heads in disappointment or mirth at our political figures for not knowing the exact CPI, or unemployment rate, or some other obscure figure when we should be shaking our heads at the inaction on helping those who most need it but are least likely to ask.

Its easy to criticise politicians for being trivial and ignoring real problems. But they're that way because they can be, which means ultimately that they're that way because we let them. Its time we stopped letting them. In three months time there's an election. Its time we made some different choices.

Climate Change: NZ policy in a nutshell "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

nzclimatechangepolicy

We've all seen the cartoon above, about the endless cycle of New Zealand climate change policy. But the Zero Carbon Act was supposed to stop it, by forcing the government to actually make plans and account for its failures if it didn't actually do anything to achieve them. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be working out that way:

Theres a risk the Government will not reduce emissions enough to meet its first emissions budget.

But this does not necessarily mean the Government has fallen short of the emissions reduction rules it has set itself. While emissions reductions might not be sufficient to fall within the budget, the Government can borrow against a future budget, meaning it technically lives within its commitments.

This is technically legal - the Zero Carbon Act allows governments to borrow up to 1% of the next budget to meet a previous one. For the 2026-2030 budget period, that equates to about 3 million tons. But its obviously not what was meant to happen, and raises the prospect of successive governments perpetually borrowing from the future in order to legally - but not actually - meet commitments they've made impossible due to their own short-term thinking and pandering to polluters. Which is kindof the whole problem in a nutshell: constantly throwing our problems onto future generations.

This short-term dumping of our problems on the future needs to stop. And if mainstream politicians are the barrier to that, well, that is what elections are for. Meanwhile, if we're looking at ways of making up Hipkins' climate shortfall, the 2021 ETS participant emissions report gives a good idea of places to target for immediate shutdown.

The exposure of criminality behind the Robodebt scheme and the distress caused to its victims should highlight the need for more sympathy towards those living in poverty, writes Bilal Cleland.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN forced to contact Centrelink in the past decade or so, you would be aware of how unwelcoming and difficult it is to deal with.

The phone is left ringing until you give up and when a visit to the office is necessary, queues and waiting for lengthy periods is the experience.

The staff are overstretched and try to be helpful but the whole Centrelink enterprise is underfunded and poorly administered at the top. It has been poorly served by a string of ministers who we hope are included in the sealed section of the Robodebt Royal Commission Report.

The assumption, which seems to have been passed down from Victorian England, is that you are trying to get something for nothing.

The Prosperity Gospel

This old-fashioned approach to welfare has been revived by the spread of the insidious tumour of the Prosperity Gospel or the health and wealth gospel, from a Pentecostal base in the USA.

It is not a mainstream Christian approach and an American Christian website, The Gospel Coalition, analyses this arrogant attitude:

In the forefront is the doctrine of the assurance of divine physical health and prosperity through faith. In short, this means that health and wealth are the automatic divine right of all Bible-believing Christians and may be procreated by faith as part of the package of salvation, since th...

Draft state electoral boundaries for Western Australia released "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The draft electoral boundaries for the next Western Australian state election were released overnight. One regional electorate has been abolished, making room for one new electorate in the outer south-east of Perth.

The seats of Moore and North-West Central have been merged into a new seat of Mid-West which covers a large rural area surrounding Geraldton.

The new seat of Oakford has been created in the outer south-east out of parks of Armadale, Baldivis, Darling Range and Jandakot.

Another five seats have been renamed:

  • Willagee to Bibra Lake
  • Mirrabooka to Girraween
  • Carine to Padbury
  • Warnbro to Secret Harbour
  • Swan Hills to Walyunga
  • Burns Beach to Windarie

The margins are posted below.

At first glance its hard to judge the impact because of the enormous Labor landslide in 2021. But its worth noting that the abolition of North West Central has reduced the Nationals to just three seats, while Churchlands has flipped to be a Liberal seat, giving the Liberals three seats.

I have now updated this table following some more precise population calculations and to make estimates for Bibra Lake and Fremantle where ALP vs GRN and ALP vs LIB counts were transferred into incompatible seats.

Seat Old margin New margin
Albany 13.7% ALP vs LIB 11.5% ALP vs LIB
Armadale 35.5% ALP vs LIB 33.8% ALP vs LIB
Balcatta 25.8% ALP vs LIB 24.4% ALP vs LIB

BOOK REVIEW: The Voice to Parliament Handbook "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

BOOK REVIEW: The Voice to Parliament Handbook

Thomas Mayo and Kerry O'Brien's The Voice to Parliament Handbook is a clear and informative look at how the Voice to Parliament may address many ingrained wrongs. Xavier Donovan takes a look at how this book helps to inform the debate.

THE VOICE TO PARLIAMENT is a proposed constitutional amendment in Australia aimed at providing permanent representation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the Constitution. It's designed to give these communities input into governmental decisions, policies, and laws that impact them.

Thomas Mayo and Kerry OBriens The Voice to Parliament Handbook is a relatively easy-to-digest outline of how and why the Voice to Parliament referendum should be implemented. The combination of an Indigenous and non-Indigenous author allows for a relatable and well-rounded perspective on matters involving the Voice to Parliament.

As a First Nations leader, Mayo provides valuable insight into the Voice. Thomas Mayo is a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man, union official, and advocate for a constitutionally enshrined Voice. He's authored four books involving Indigenous themes, contributes to various publications and serves in multiple advisory roles within diversity councils and labour networks.

Mayo sets the tone of the book immediately in the preface by detailing the creation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart a petition formed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, to which he is a signatory, which spurred the Australian Government into calling the Voice to Parliament Referendum.

Through this, he motivates readers by proving that progress can be made towards bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. However, he also emphasises how societal improvements can only take effect if enough people come together and support change an aspect which is integral to the implementation of the Voice.

Mayo also dedicates an entire chapter to discussing how important conversations are to the Vo...

Government secretly axes panel of PwC tax partners

An entire 47-person Australian Government tax advisory panel which provided real-time policy advice to the Federal Treasurer has been scrapped after more than two decades as the PwC tax leaks scandal continues to unfold.

The high-level federal government Advisory Panel which investigations showed was stacked with big four tax partners and global fossil fuel tax specialists has been axed behind the scenes as questions swirl over ties between government and the tax industry.

It can be revealed the Board of Taxations Advisory Panel, set up in 2002, was quietly dissolved on June 29.

That was just days after The Klaxon put a series of highly detailed questions to it and to the Department of Treasury, which oversees it, regarding former PwC tax partner, Anthony Klein.

Klein, a tax partner with consultancy PwC for 17 years until July 2021, was appointed a director of the Board of Taxation in October 2021, having been on the Board of Taxations Advisory Panel since 2015.

While at PwC, Klein had worked in direct collaboration with at least two former partners named by PwC to date in connection with the scandal: Paul McNab and disgraced accountant, Peter Collins.

Talisman Sabre 2023 beginnt an diesem Samstag (22. FIFA Begs Fans to Do the Right Thing and Buy Tickets as Womens World Cup Gets Underway with Many Unsold Seats "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

With the Womens World Cup getting underway Thursday, CNN reported Wednesday that FIFA was still struggling to sell tickets to the monthlong event, which is being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

In an effort to turn that around, FIFA President Gianni Infantino implored New Zealanders to purchase tickets for the womens soccer showcase.

New Zealand, we want you. We need you, Infantino said during a news conference Wednesday in Auckland.

Its never too late to do the right thing. Come to watch the matches. We need full stadiums to warm us all up, he added, emphasizing the significance of enthusiastic support from the home crowd.

Joining Infantino was FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, who echoed his sentiments and encouraged Kiwis not to delay in securing their tickets.

We still have tickets available for some matches, so my only plea is dont wait until the last moment, Samoura said.

As part of the efforts to entice fans to attend the matches, the accounting firm Xero, an official partner of the Womens World Cup, offered 20,000 free tickets for games in New Zealands four host cities, according to CNN.

While the complimentary ticket allocation has been fully utilized, the remaining tickets left unsold indicate interest in the event remains low.

The exact reason is unclear.

The Associated Press noted that the countrys Football Ferns have never won a World Cup group match.

A larger problem, it said, is that soccer is not generally a widely supported sport in New Zealand and attracting fans to stadiums in the coldest months of the year was always going to be a hard sell.

In the United States, the womens soccer team has...

Oil and gas industry campaign challenged for being misleading and worse "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Contributed by Jim Hayes

Campaigners against the fossil fuel industry have taken issue with the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Associations (Appea) advertising campaign to convince Australia that gas is a green furl because it is 50 percent cleaner than coal, and essential to lowering greenhouse gases.

Lock the Gate and climate advocacy group Comms Declare have made a submission to the Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to launch an investigation. The Environmental Defenders Office has sent its own letter to the ACCC, accusing the advertising campaign of potentially misleading the public on several counts.

The fuss is about more than misleading the public. The claims are lies and deliberately withhold critical evidence that proves the fact. This form of dishonest advertising is now called greenwashing, and Appea is guilty of it.

Image from Victoria

This is why the submissions to the ACCC are calling for those responsible to be held accountable.

Greenwashing is dangerous because it delays action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and undermines competition and consumer trust in green or renewable products, said Kirsty Ruddock, managing lawyer at the EDO.

Last month an Ad Standards panel found Appeas campaign had breached its codes covering environmental claims.

The downside is that the panel took a minimalist position of considering only the lack of clarity and detail on the claims made. It didnt consider whether the claims are true or false. It could have considered that gas emits a high level of methane gas, which is a more potent greenhouse gas that carbon. The 50 percent cleaner than coal tag is...

Bitboy Predicts XRP Will Soar To $35 On Heels Of Ripple IPO "IndyWatch Feed National"

In a recent tweet, Ben BitBoy Armstrong, a controversial figure in the crypto community, stirred discussions with a noteworthy projection for the future price of XRP. The excitement began when Evan Luthra, an angel investor and Forbes 30 under 30 award winner, tweeted, XRP just surpassed BTC trading volume. Its now the highest trading crypto asset. Whats your price target for Ripple?

Will XRP Rise to $35?

BitBoys response can be classified as very bold when he said $15 is reasonable, I think over 18 months or so. If they IPO and time it right, could be up to $35 imo. At the heart of Armstrongs projection is his belief in the long-term growth potential of XRP, with the projected price of $15 signifying a whopping 1,720% increase from its current price.

This optimism may be bolstered by the recent legal victory by Ripple which has provided some clarity for XRP. Remarkably, BitBoys enthusiasm didnt stop at $15, as he suggested that XRPs price could potentially reach $35 if Ripple proceeds with an Initial Public Offering (IPO) and times it strategically. Achieving this target would necessitate a staggering surge of 4,200%.

The rumors about an upcoming IPO of Ripple are not new. CEO Brad Garlinghouse hinted at the possibility already before the SEC lawsuit. Its likely the agency threw a wrench in the companys plans.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to approach such forecasts with caution, as BitBoy himself acknowledged the inherent unpredictability of the crypto market. Cryptocurrencies are renowned for their price volatility and susceptibility to various external factors, making accurate predictions a challenging task. BityBoy added:

Make no mistake it may not go that high but XRP IS breaking an all time high this cycle save some sort of pointless, vindictive SEC appeal. (Low chance)

Also, the influencers optimistic outlook on XRPs potential is not entirely new. In April, he had already identified XRP as his top altcoin pick for the next bull run, contingent on a favorable outcome in the SEC lawsuit. A positive resolution would provide the asset with much-needed legal and regulatory clarity, potentially acting as a further catalyst for growth.

In another tweet the influencer reacted to a Twitter user who stated Everything is breaking ATH this cycle. Armstrong answered that he doesnt think so, revealing his picks for such altcoins, Solana, Dogecoin, Shiba all potentially on that list. Previous top 10 coins that didnt make new aths last cycle: NEM, NEO, Dash, BCH, XRP (for good reason) etc. Dont fall into the same trap I did last cycle. Everything doesnt perform.

UTAS: In more trouble than Burke and Wills? "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

UTAS is in more trouble than Burke and Wills.

The UTAS Council meeting on 27th April 2023 discussed the 2023 financial forecast. The minutes, reproduced below, make bleak reading.

The Council discussed the challenging conditions facing the University in 2023 and proceeded to discuss ways to generate a positive EBITDA in the coming years. What that implies is that current projections must show negative EBITDAs.

The acronym EBITDA stands for Earnings Before Interest Tax Depreciation and Amortisation, essentially the cash earnings before interest and depreciation (NB UTAS doesnt pay tax). Its a standard measure of the cash available to service borrowings and to pay for capex amounts (new buildings say).

UTAS EBITDA in 2022 was $30.9 million. To be in negative territory in 2023 reveals an alarming downturn.

A business might break even from a profit perspective, but adding back depreciation and interest gives a figure for cash earnings.

If UTAS has negative cash earnings, it can only survive by running down its investments or borrowing more. Even if capex spending is zero, it means UTAS is borrowing to pay interest. Ouch.

Running down investment and borrowing more was the plan for financing the Hobart move. Without that UTAS survival changes would be greater as universities traditionally have a larger buffer of cash and investments than most in the private sector.

The minutes suggest future challenges will start to be addressed in October. This highlights the nature of UTAS business. Whilst others might be able to implement changes more rapidly, UTAS is tied to the cycle of the academic year. Its going to have to live with cash haemorrhaging for the rest of 2023 and hope things can be put into place post October to take effect before the 2024 academic year.

The 2022 Annual Report reflected (t)hese past three years have been among the most challenging our University has ever faced.

Revised strategy focuses on regions Aboriginal heritage "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

THE draft Wollongong Heritage Strategy 2023-2027, now on exhibition for comment, has been revised to include a stronger focus on Aboriginal Heritage.

Wollongong City Council says identifying, conserving, recording, and celebrating the regions heritage is a key strategic goal.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the City of Wollongong is on Dharawal Country.

One of the aspects of our history that we wanted to make clear in the draft Strategy is that Wollongongs heritage is much more than just historical buildings. While architectural forms such as cemeteries, ocean pools, historic buildings and memorials are important, our heritage stretches beyond the European-centric lens, Cr Bradbery said.

Instead, our citys heritage has been shaped by cultural and natural landscapes of importance to the local Aboriginal Community, which are now layered with shared heritage values such as agriculture, mining and military history.

Strategy identifies the risks associated with heat for the community and the environment "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

ALTHOUGH floods and bushfires have dominated the news headlines in recent years, heatwaves kill more Aussies annually than all other natural hazards combined.

Heat and heatwaves are the focus of a new strategy that has been drafted by Wollongong City Council in consultation with the University of New South Wales.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the draft strategy identifies the risks associated with heat for the community, the environment, and Council operations.

Heat is increasingly recognised as a key risk to communities right across Australia. That risk will only grow as our climate changes, said Cr Bradbery.

A heatwave is when both maximum and minimum temperatures stay unusually high for three or more days. Heatwave effects are magnified in built up areas, like Wollongong, where hard surfaces such as roads and buildings retain heat and drive-up temperatures (called the urban heat island effect).

Through this draft strategy, were getting on the front foot and working to understand and reduce the heat risk to current and future residents of Wollongong. Some of the proposed actions ar...

Shedshaker Brewing launches Castlemaine Keg for Good, raising money for community groups "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Renowned for its range of fresh, handcrafted, small-batch craft beers, Castlemaines Shedshaker Brewing has launched a new community program aimed at raising money for local groups to help them pursue their goals.

Named Castlemaine Keg for Good, the money raised each month will be donated to a nominated local community group, starting this July.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Locally loved for its fresh beer, local wines and delicious food served in a funky arts space with live music and an eclectic arts program, Shedshaker Director Jacqueline Brodie-Hanns said the Keg for Good is another way Shedshaker is helping the community.

Once a month, well throw a keg on the bar for our Castlemaine Keg for Good, she explains.

People can then visit the Taproom, order a pot or pint of our Pale Ale and pay whatever amount they like as a donation to the cause.

Combining donating to local groups with a lovely cold beer seems like win-win to us!

Shedshaker will donate 100% of proceeds from the keg to the chosen group and let everyone know how much money was raised.

The brewery has selected Red Box Wildlife Shelter as the first donation recipient, a dedicated wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation site for Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Brushtail Possums. Their mission is to Rescue, Rehabilitate, Raise and Release along with teach Compassion, promote Education and encourage Advocacy.

For our first Keg for Good, we will be donating money to Red Box Wildlife Shelter, who do brilliant work looking after kangaroos and other animals, including those hit by cars or injured in other ways and getting them back on their feet.

On Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 of July, from 5pm to close, all donations for a pot or pint of Pale will go to this great charity.

Like many others, we admire Nikki and Scotts dedication to protecting and helping kangaroos and are thrilled they are the first local organisation we can help with this program.

Each month will feature a different local group to spread the goodwill around the community.

What is the best place to watch the Matilda's vs Ireland game tonight? "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Up from Melbourne for the week and I earlier today realised that the Matildas are playing their World Cup opener against Ireland tonight.

A very quick scan of Facebook doesn't tell me that any of your local pubs are advertising that they're showing the game, other than PJ O'Brian's, which is obviously an Irish pub.

So does anyone have any ideas on where I might potentially be able to watch the game, or what pubs might be showing it etc?

Any advice would be great.

COME ON AUSTRALIA!

5 Amazing New Discoveries About Light "IndyWatch Feed National"

Ah Yes. for the record, we have multiple reports confirming that certain large animals coexisting on this planet can themselves do just this which is to induce an invisibility cloak.  Think shimmer man in particular.  that is what it would look like.

It appears that a mere light photon can have lots of geometry whose volume is less than needed to allow decay into a sublight particle.  Hmm.  They can also stick together and do odd things like clump up and perhaps somehow merge though that may mean a loss of information..

A lot of fundzamental questions remain unanswered.

Not least is the relationship to TIME produced by the creation of a fundamental particle pair.  This is tied directly to three dimensional particles while photons are sort of not at all.  right now i do think that all photons have a natural thickness measured by the inverse of empirical infinity  which will also vary slightly from Galaxy to Galaxy.

At least i can conjecture at least one firm dimension here and the other two can be all over the map as they obviously are.  again they are not interacting through TIME which is hte pendulum of our creation.

Geometrically we can think of them all mostly as platters for now with a thickness t which is a constant.

Start from scratch call as nuclear dump plan shelved "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Yahoo Sport, Tim Dornin, Wed, 19 July 2023

The Commonwealth needs to go back to the drawing board on plans for a nuclear waste dump and put all options back on the table, the South Australian government says.

Following the Federal Courts move to set aside a decision to build the dump on SAs Eyre Peninsula, Deputy Premier Susan Close said it was important for the Commonwealth to take a cautious approach to where the facility might best be located.

I think its important they start from the beginning about where its most suitable, she said.

Where is the material coming from, where is the geological stability and where is the community acceptance?

Dr Close said the previous coalition government had botched the process, exaggerating the urgency for the facility and excluding the Indigenous community.

As a result, its come a cropper in the court, as it should have, she said.

The deputy premier said given the level of angst surrounding the Kimba location in SA, it would be best to start from scratch.

The previous government decided to build the dump at Napandee, near Kimba, in November 2021, when it announced it had acquired 211 hectares of land with the proposed facility subject to heritage, design and technical studies.

But the proposal faced strong opposition from the Barngarla traditional owners and environmental groups.

Earlier this year the Barngarla went to the Federal Court seeking a judicial review of the governments declaration and on Tuesday Justice Natalie Charlesworth upheld one of their four grounds.

She said the only appropriate order was to set aside the whole of the declaration made by former resources minister Keith Pitt.

The Barngarla Aboriginal Determination Corporation welcomed the decision, describing the fight against the dump as crucial to First Nations people around the country.

Resources Minister Madeleine King said Labor had worked with the Barngarla people in the last term of parliament to ensure they secured the right to seek judicial review of the decision to acquire the site and that she would review the judgment. 2023

Examining the impact of the legal decision against the planned Kimba nuclear waste dump. "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Heres what we know about the Kimba nuclear storage facility decision, By Josephine Lim ABC News 18 Jul 23

This week the federal court ruled in favour of traditional owners who have been fighting against the
development of a nuclear waste facility

The federal government had selected a site in South Australias Eyre Peninsula to store low and
intermediate level radioactive waste, but the courts decision has left the future of the project uncertain.

The uncertainty extends far beyond the courts decision as the facility will never see the light of day due to i t s c o m p l e t e a n d i n h e r e n t unsuitability which includes the environmental implications and the lack of compliance with international standards and prescriptions relating to nuclear installations and their .safety

Heres what we know so far. What did the original proposal entail?

In November 2021, Napandee near the town of Kimba, was acquired to be the storage facility for low and
medium-level nuclear waste.

The 211-hectare property was chosen from a shortlist of three sites, including the outback town of
Lyndhurst and Wallerberdina, a property in the northern Flinders Ranges

At the time, Coalition resources minister Keith Pitt said the site would create 45 permanent jobs in
the Kimba community.

Time for dump to be dumped for good "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

The states peak environment group has strongly welcomed todays Federal Court judgement that sets aside the declaration of Napandee (Kimba) as the site for the Australias nuclear waste facility.

Today is an extraordinary vindication of the years long struggle by the Barngarla people to stand up for their Country, their Dreaming and their right to be heard, said Conservation SA Chief Executive Craig Wilkins

This case was never about whether imposing nuclear waste on Kimba was the right thing to do, but now the court has declared that the process the Federal Government undertook was never even legal.

The Morrison Government, first with Matt Canavan as Minister, then with Keith Pitt, tried to force through a deeply divisive and deeply flawed proposal.

They stuffed up the process and their relationship with the local community, particularly the Barngarla Traditional Owners.

Now this comprehensive judgement has been handed down, there is only one appropriate course of action open for the Albanese Government an...

Great British Nuclear: High on hype, Low on substance "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

How is Great British Nuclear meant to take forward the SMR competition when it has no operating budget, no legal powers, no permanent staff team, and no base from which to operate?

How is GBN meant to take forward the SMR competition when it has no operating budget, no legal powers, no permanent staff team, and no base from which to operate?

 https://www.nuclearpolicy.info/news/great-british-nuclear-high-on-hype-low-on-substance/ 18 Jul 23

Energy Secretary Grant Shapps finally launched Great British Nuclear today (18 July), but whilst the ministers announcement was big on hype, the UK/Ireland Nuclear Free Local Authorities noticed that it was short on substance.

Great British Nuclear was the new body announced by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in April 2022 as part of his revised energy strategy. GBN is supposed to be front and centre of a rapid expansion of nuclear power at an unprecedented scale and pace, but the formal launch of the initiative has been put on hold several times, including humiliatingly at the eleventh-hour last week.

Nuclear in the UK has made little progress since April 2022. EDF Energy, which is building the only nuclear plant under construction at Hinkley Point C, has recently announced a further delay in delivery and a huge increase in costs, whilst its reactor design the EPR-1 has been beset with serious safety and reliability issues, with an accident at Taishan-1 in China and repeated delays to the start-up of its reactor in Olkiluoto in Finland. And the UK government has so far failed to engender any interest within the financial markets to back its Sizewell C development, meaning that the British and French governments (and ultimately taxpayers) continue to carry the can.

More faith is being placed by ministers on the development of so-called Small and Advanced Modular Reactors, with GBNs role being to provide oversight to a competition amongst rival designs to select those deemed worthy of government funding to take forward through the regulatory approvals process and onto deployment. Such reactors would be fabricated remotely and then taken in parts for assembly on site, but all is not rosy developments costs are rising exponentially, none of the designs are proven to be safe or reliable, none have been built, the financial position of some developers is becoming uncertain, and there remains the intractable radioactive waste problem....

Brussels: Global Women For Peace United Against NATO Meet With EU Parliament, NATO Representatives "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

SCHEERPOST, By Colonel (Ret) Ann Wright / Popular Resistance, July 18, 2023

The weekend before the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, Global Women for Peace United against NATO representing women in 35 countries met July 6-9, 2023 for three days of peace discussions in Brussels, Belgium.

I am writing with details of each of the excellent panels and webinars to provide a sense of the numbers of women from around the world who participated in the program.

Photos of the various events in the conference are being posted in the media section of the Global Womens website. Video recordings of the sessions are included for each session, but due to technical problems with the recordings, some are not of as good of quality as we had wished.

Global Women Meet With Members of the European Parliament

On July 6, 2023, twenty Global Women delegates met with members of the European Parliament to express their concern about the war-making role of NATO. The meeting was moderated by Skeyi Koukouma, from Cyprus, Secretary General of the Progressive Womens Movement POGO. Irish member of the European Parliament Clare Daly and German member of the European Parliament zlem Demirel spoke to the Global Women delegation about their concerns about NATO. The delegation gave a copy of the founding statement of Global Women to the members of the European Parliament.

MEP Clare Daly forcefully said that war and militarism are anathema to feminism and equality and stressed that equality, justice and peace are the principles that underpin womens struggle for freedom.  She emphasized that there is no place for militarism or the use of violence to achieve geopolitical goals. She underscored that NATOs purpose is domination, not justice or the defense of human rights. MEP Daly emphasized that women must resist NATOs policies, calling for its dismantling and the restoration of equality and peace and not allow NATO to co-opt the use of the term Feminine Foreign Policy and Women, Gender and Equality.

Only neutral countries can bring peace to Ukraine Brazil "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

https://www.rt.com/news/579835-brazilian-fm-weapons-deliveries-ukraine/ 18 Jul 23

Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira told RIA Novosti that several countries are willing to join his nations peace efforts

Brazil is against weapons deliveries to either party in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has said. The diplomat also predicted that peace would eventually be achieved with the help of nations which have not taken sides, such as Brazil and African countries.

In an interview with Russias RIA Novosti published on Monday, Vieira stressed that Brasilia has consistently voiced its opposition to arms shipments to Kiev and Moscow.

According to the diplomat, several countries are ready to join Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvas peace efforts. The minister cited the initiatives recently put forward by a group of African nations.

This will take time, but its precisely this that will lead to peace which we are striving for, Vieira insisted.

While on an official visit to Rome last month, President Lula argued that Russia and Ukraine both need to compromise to end the conflict.

The two parties both need to get something. Only the Russians and the Ukrainians know what they need to reach peace, he said at the time.

The Brazilian head of state also called into question the EUs capacity for mediation, arguing that the bloc is effectively involved in the conflict. Lula went on to name India, Mexico, and African nations as potential neutral peace brokers.

Moscow has blamed Kiev for the lack of peace negotiations, pointing out that last year Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree that rules out talks for as long as his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, remains in power.

The Ukrainian government insists it will only negotiate after driving Russian forces out from all territories within its 1991 borders. Zelensky has proposed a peace plan of his own, which calls for a Russian withdrawal, reparations, and a tribunal for alleged war criminals.

Moscow has rejected the idea, describing it as detached from reality.

John Pilger, On The Betrayers Of Julian Assange "IndyWatch Feed National"

More than a decade on from his forced asylum and subsequent torture in 2012 at the hands of British and US authorities, Julian Assange remains abandoned by his own government, writes John Pilger.

I have known Julian Assange since I first interviewed him in London in 2010. I immediately liked his dry, dark sense of humour, often dispensed with an infectious giggle. He is a proud outsider: sharp and thoughtful. We have become friends, and I have sat in many courtrooms listening to the tribunes of the state try to silence him and his moral revolution in journalism.

My own high point was when a judge in the Royal Courts of Justice leaned across his bench and growled at me: You are just a peripatetic Australian like Assange. My name was on a list of volunteers to stand bail for Julian, and this judge spotted me as the one who had reported his role in the notorious case of the expelled Chagos Islanders. Unintentionally, he delivered me a compliment.

I saw Julian in Belmarsh not long ago. We talked about books and the oppressive idiocy of the prison: the happy-clappy slogans on the walls, the petty punishments; they still wont let him use the gym. He must exercise alone in a cage-like area where there is a sign that warns about keeping off the grass. But there is no grass. We laughed; for a brief moment, some things didnt seem too bad.

The laughter is a shield, of course. When the prison guards began to jangle their keys, as they like to do, indicating our time was up, he fell quiet. As I left the room he held his fist high and clenched as he always does. He is the embodiment of courage.

Those who are the antithesis of Julian: in whom courage is unheard of, along with principle and honour, stand between him and freedom. I am not referring to the Mafia regime in Washington whose pursuit of a good man is meant as a warning to us all, but rather to those who still claim to run a just democracy in Australia.

How To Deal With Dead Link Scammers "IndyWatch Feed National"

One of the unfortunate realities of publishing a wildly popular online newspaper is dealing with email scammers which isnt fun, until it is.

Most of the hundreds of emails New Matilda receives every day are bog standard media releases. But in amongst that, are every conceivable type of email scam that you can think of.

One of the more virulent is companies looking for New Matilda to link to their own websites. Many of them offer to pay for the links (Like Peter Dutton, New Matilda has a blanket no policy regardless of merit) and then others want it for free and so they try and trick you into it by telling you that existing links in already published New Matilda articles are dead, and thus should be updated to something more useful such a link to whatever horseshit product theyre pushing.

While collaborative albums are a great idea in theory, they quite often end up being colossal flops. Whether a result of artists bringing too much ego to the table, or just a genuine lack of cohesion between varying styles, they commonly end up feeling more like a copy-paste of different artists verses, as opposed to actual curated songs. (Im looking at you Sound City.)

Kevin Borichs Duets is an exception to this. Boasting an illustrious list of collaborators, as well as Borichs veteran guitarmanship and songwriting ability, Duets highlights how effective well-executed collabs can be.

And theres a clear reason for it Borich doesnt care if hes the star of the show. Even though hes had over 50 years experience being a bonafide star in his own right, Duets highlights his clear ability to step back and adapt to the individual style and nuance of the artists hes working with.

Duets features Russell Morris, Leo Sayer, Suze DeMarchi (Baby Animals), Joe Walsh (Eagles), Ian Moss (Cold Chisel), Tim Rogers (You Am I), Ella Hooper (Killing Heidi), Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo), Joe Camilleri (Black Sorrows), Ross Wilson (Daddy Cool/Mondo Rock), Angela Fabian and John Swan (Swanee/Party Boys). And today we give you no-plus, the real secret to Wall Streets boom-y-ness.  </p> <p>Dont fight the Fed has been one of the most successful formulae on Wall Street. But its not foolproof. And not complete.</p> <p>When the Fed switched from enabling inflation with zero rates in 2020to trying to curb it by increasing rates in 2022an investor would have been well advised to switch too from buying the dips to selling the bounces. Stocks went down.</p> <p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Doom, gloom and boom</strong></p> <p>But then, they didnt go down. The bounce has now gone on for nine months. It has created a whole new group of rich people the AI Millionaires. And it has produced what looks to many like a new bull marketwith the best six months for the Nasdaq in historyand more to come.  </p> <p>Not only that, but the US economy, too, has so far resisted its long overdue rendezvous with the business cycle. Wheres the recession? Wheres all the doom & gloom we promised?

A broader question worth asking: did the geniuses at the Fed finally get the hang of managing a $24 trillion economyso that their own errors disappear, without pain or embarrassment? Its a Dark Club and You Dont Want a Part in It! "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

In November 2005, George Carlin said to his audience in a New York live show Life is Worth Losing that Its a big club and you aint in it. This statement will be what people will remember him for in future generations.

He revealed the shocking truth about the system that we live in.

You can hear a four-minute excerpt here.

A word of warning though theres some confronting and shocking content in this clip. Just so you know, the swearing is the least of the matter!

You know that theres a bunch of people who own most of the worlds resources, companies and wield an immense amount of power. Ive talked about this in the past on several occasions (like here).

Theyre not as invincible as they used to be after the arrest and mysterious suicide of Jeffrey Epstein in 2019. And, more prominently, when they lost control of Twitter last October, hence the power to control the narrative.

In fact, the latest bombshell is profoundly destructive to them. So much so that its sealed their fate.

Ive primed you in the past to stomach whats to come.

Here goes

Buckle up, this one is dark

Exploiting the most vulnerable

The Sound of Freedom is a movie detailing the true story of Tim Ballard, a US Department of Homeland Security agent who fought for over a decade to rescue children from international crime syndicates engaging in sex slavery and human trafficking. Released on 4 July in line with Independence Day, it caused much controversy and division.

The controversy wasnt over how such heinous acts existed in the world. After all, people have grown aware of this going on in their own country.

For example, the Hong Kong public found out last year how gangs tricked tourists to fly to South-East Asia before selling them to slave labour. This prompted calls for the Special Administrative Government to tighten laws to protect people from falling into these traps. They also imposed severe punishments against offenders who were caught.

In January this year, the singer Madonna was in the headlines after a charity foundation, Ethiopian World Federation, accused her of engaging in child trafficking in Malawi. The singer has been a prominent philanthropist supporting child adoption in Africa. She has personally adopted four African children to raise as her own. However, in doing so, she raised...

Ballina Council hires consulting firm to help create Shaws Bay plan "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Shaws Bay in East Ballina. Image Ballina Shire Council

The Ballina Shire Council has outsourced initial development of a Shaws Bay management plan to a locally based private consulting company.

The move comes as conversations continue across the country around the merits and risks of governments depleting public services in favour of hiring often expensive external agencies to do work in the public interest.

High profile consulting firms PWC and Deloitte are making headlines for all the wrong reasons, mostly around their exploitation of government information for commercial interests.

They are two of the so-called big four consulting firms to have received millions of dollars in public funds for years to do government work, as part of a trend that some commentators trace back to the era of John Howards prime ministership, while others say it was Gough Whitlam who first acted on scepticism towards public service department workers.

National politics and history aside, the consulting industry may well be thriving at a smaller scale thanks partly to local governments struggling to maintain staff.

The 197203 lot, a staged subdivision at 226 Invercauld Road, Goonellabah, called Eastwood Estate, has been rejected by the Land and Environment Court (L&EC).

This is an amazing outcome, it is a credit that Lismore City Council (LCC) councillors who twice voted to reject the development to have their decision upheld by the Court, Al Oshlack from the Indigenous Justice Advocacy Network told The Echo.

The development application (DA) by McCloy Project Management to create 203 new residential lots and a residual open space lot and associated ten new roads, bulk earthworks, essential services (water, sewer, power & telecommunications), stormwater management facilities, landscaping and environmental rehabilitation was rejected by LCC on 26 July, 2022.

On Taylor Swift: revising, revisiting and resurrecting the self "IndyWatch Feed National"

Being a Swiftie comes with a flavour of shame. Although she is one of the worlds most accoladed pop stars, Swift is arguably also one of the most hated. Her music occupies a rare space, simultaneously enjoyed and reviled as musical hits, always maintaining a dual universality. Streaming over cereal boxes or jingling in the waiting room, Swifts music enjoys an underlying cultural presence in our daily life, as mundane as that of a bottle of milk.

I was invited by Hape Kiddle to develop a sculpture and we collaborated on Freddo Frog, which was my comment about how companies appropriate nature and that natural response of delight when seeing similar amphibians.

However, the anniversary is an interesting coincidence as recently I've been reflecting on the Fragments exhibtion that Hape curated as I've been focused on researching Murray Cod.

It's a long story, so let me try and make sense of it.

The fragments that formed the exhibition were offcuts from a River Red Gum that Hape Kiddle sculpted into a Murray Cod for the National Museum of Australia.

He offered big chunks of timber to local artists and asked them to use these for the exhibition, while he worked on the sculpture.

Last weekend I ended up at the Museum and went looking for Hape's Cod.

Deep Winter Agrarian Gathering 2023: Declaration "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

Over the weekend of the 14th to 16th of July 2023, around 100 farmers and allies met on Gumbaynggirr lands for the annual Deep Winter Agrarian Gathering, the first following a 3-year hiatus. First Peoples have lived, farmed and cared for this land for thousands of years, and sovereignty was never ceded.  We were welcomed to this land by Uncle Micklo, who also taught us to speak our happiness to be on this land, in the local indigenous language.

The work we do on a daily basis is nourished by the activities of Deep Winter. The opportunity to see old friends and colleagues, meet new ones, build solidarity and connect with others in the field. This forum is a space for us to collectively discuss our challenges and successes, and share knowledge, experiences, and strategy to deepen our thinking and strengthen our movement.

This year farmers brought a wide range of topics for discussion, however, woven throughout every discussion was one theme, it came up again and again community and collaboration.  Farmers want this, they need it and it appears it may provide the solution to many of the hurdles faced by small scale farmers today. Sharing time, sharing resources, sharing knowledge, sharing burdens and risks and sharing the rewards.

Our conventional farming system isolates and sets farmers against one another through a competition mentality that is ingrained in much of what we do everyday. Small scale farmers are working together to break away from this. They are working together to increase reach, increase diversity, build each other up and shift the dominant mentality from competition to collaboration.

When new farmers are struggling to get started, we can support them through mentoring and examples of successful enterprise. We can help farmers get onto land, when there are financial barriers to access, by developing and sharing models for collectivising. How we develop the agreements that collective efforts are founded upon, need to be a shared resource. Examples from those already treading the path can help to light the way for those just starting out.

The cost and viability of small scale farming can be boosted by collectivising and creating larger grouped entities that maintain the integrity of small scale and local while having increased resilience, diversity and support. We are challenged to change our view point from ingredients to values. To see our products as more than the simple ingredients we are putting on the table to the values behind what we do, and help our communities to do the same.

Low confidence throughout business sector "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jeremy Crawford said this weeks announcement that the 2026 Commonwealth Games would not go ahead was not a huge shock.

Citing a cost blowout from the budgeted $2.6 billion to possibly over $7 billion, Premier Daniel Andrews cancelled the Games, which was to be held in Geelong and three other regional hubs.

Despite the Games cancellation, Mr Andrews recommitted to the legacy infrastructure promises that were part of the larger Games project, including new and upgraded sporting facilities and social and affordable housing in Geelong and regional Victoria.

Mr Crawford said that while the announcement was surprising in that no one saw it coming there had been low confidence among the business sector.

There has been very low confidence due to a lack of clarity and certainty coming out of the government, especially over the last few months or so, he said.

We havent had any businesses that have been hanging their future hopes and dreams on the Commonwealth Games.

But what we have had is obviously some feedback from different parts of the business community who might be impacted by this, particularly our sporting organisations that we partner with the chamber.

The business sentiment is that what were looking forward to is working with the government on where this investment is going to and making sure that its utilised appropriately.

Mr Crawford said there were some businesses who had begun planning for the Games.

There are some businesses that I spoke to today who were looking at growing, expanding or even starting because of the opportunity of the Commonwealth Games, he said.

There are probably in the minority, but what we really want to make sure of is that when the investment goes into some of these bricks and mortar projects whether its sporting stadia, community provisions or even a regional tourism package, that the ability for the services to be sustainably delivered is there with that support as well.

Mr Crawford said there were more than 4000 jobs to be created from the Games, pre- post- and during the event.

And that has a lot of affiliate industries that would have ridden the wave of putting Geelong on the map internationally including the tourism sector, the hospitality sector and a lot of the retailers that obviously would have benefitted from a huge increase in foot traffic in and around the Geelong regions and sporting precincts, he said.

With all of that now seemingly completely lost, what we want to know is how can get the government to work with organisations like the Chamber and others to make sure that those opportunities for businesses still exist and over the next period of time where theres investment going in there that the provision of those services would have been offered for businesses to tap into, there still remains opportunities for them to grow.

Committee CEO disappointed "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Committee for Geelong CEO Michael Johnston said he was disappointed to learn of the cancellation of the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Games, to be held in regional Victoria, including Greater Geelong, was scrapped by Premier Daniel Andrews on Tuesday due to escalating costs associated with the event.

This represented a unique opportunity to showcase Geelong on a global stage, boost our visitor economy, and deliver a range of legacy benefits for the region, Mr Johnston said.

Those local businesses who had already spent considerable time and effort in tendering will have been dealt a double blow by this news.

The announcement of a $2 billion Region Fund in its place is welcome, and it is pleasing to hear Geelong will continue to receive the legacy infrastructure benefits the Games promised to deliver. In particular, the creation of more affordable housing is desperately needed, and we would be hopeful that additional dwellings can be added.

Mr Johnston said it was also positive for residents in the citys southern growth corridor, with the Armstrong Creek Aquatic Centre, Waurn Ponds indoor sport facility, and hockey pitch at Torquay to be completed (along with the upgrade to the Stead Park hockey facility in Norlane).

With regards to the construction of the housing and sporting infrastructure, there are some important questions that need to be addressed, he said.

What is the timing? The Games provided a firm deadline. Without that deadline, we seek assurances that these projects are not delayed.

The other question is whether local businesses will be prioritised through the procurement process? This was a key component of the Victoria 2026 procurement approach and provided Geelong businesses access to significant Government work. It is imperative on the Government to maintain this approach, and support local businesses in supplying the legacy projects. We have the skills and talent here. Use it.

No more secret trials: national security laws must protect open justice "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Human Rights Law Centre will today appear before the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor, Grant Donaldson SC, to call for urgent and comprehensive reforms to national security laws to protect open justice.

The Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM) is currently undertaking a review of the National Security Information (Criminal and Civil Proceedings) Act 2004 (NSI Act).

After revelations of the top-secret criminal prosecution of an intelligence officer known as Witness J, the INSLM conducted a targeted review in 2022 and recommended initial reforms to the NSI Act. The entire NSI Act is now under review to determine how a better balance can be struck between open justice and the protection of national security.

The Human Rights Law Centre made 14 recommendations in written submissions which included:

  • Open justice being included, recognised and preserved in the NSI Act

  • The repeal of a mandatory requirement for some hearings to be held in closed court

  • The removal of a provision that forces judges to give greatest weight to the view of the Attorney-General in determining the level of secrecy to apply

  • The appointment of independent expert to advocate for transparency in cases where secrecy is sought; and

  • The retention and periodic review of secret judgments and other closed court materials, with appropriate access.

The INSLM is due to report back to the Attorney-General by 31 October 2023.

Kieran Pender, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, said:

Open justice is a critical democratic principle, protecting the human rights of all Australians. Yet in recent years we have seen the NSI Act used to shroud the prosecution of whistleblowers like Bernard Collaery, Witness J and David McBride in secrecy, and the fully-secret prosecution of Witness J. These cases undermine public confidence in our legal system.

Comprehensive reforms are required to put open justice at the heart of the NSI Act. Appropriate checks and balances are needed to ensure the NSI Act upholds open justice without compromising national security. If adopted, our recommendations would help ensure the sweeping secrecy in cases like Collaery and Witness J can never happen again.

Dan Andrews is right to cancel Commonwealth Games "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Contributed by Joe Montero

Most of us get taken up by major sports events like the Commonwealth games and were looking forward for the next ones to take place in Australia. But as everyone knows now, they are off because the Victorian government says the state cant afford the cost blowout.

When all in considered, the states premier Dan Andrews was right to have the courage to say no. The cost blowout to $7 billion is far too much. There are far more important needs for the money to be spent on.

Photo by James Ross/AAP: Victorias premier Dan Andrews cancels Commonwealth Games

Efforts by parliamentary opponents trying to use the issue for their own political gain dont deserve to be rewarded for it. There are those functionaries and businesses suffering the loss of their own benefits. But their gain should not be at the cost of everyone elses loss.

The memory over the Tasmanian football stadium debacle is still fresh. Tasmanians held that other needs were more important. They killed it, and Dan Andrews has undoubtedly and for good reason taken this into account.

Channelling a significant part of the states budget to which is, after all a circus, would be irresponsible.  In the end, Victorians will not thank a government that did this and subsequently imposed the cost on them through cuts in services.

At a time when Australians are suffering from a cost of living blowout, there is a crying need to provide relief through more expenditure on affordable housing, health, and other measures that will help maintain a reasonable standard of living.

Money must be spent on transitioning to cleaner energy and building the infrastructure that help will generate a healthier economy to provide decent jobs and lift our income.

When a cost blowout on of this magnitude, up from $2.6 billion takes place, it throws up the suspicion that something not quite right has happened.  The reasons for the blowout have not been mad...

Comm Games shock "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Geelong council and industry leaders have reacted with shock and disappointment after Daniel Andrews announcement this week that the 2026 Commonwealth Games would no longer go ahead.

Citing a cost blowout from the budgeted $2.6 billion to possibly over $7 billion, the Premier cancelled the Games, which was to be held in Geelong and three other regional hubs.

Despite the Games cancellation, Mr Andrews recommitted to the legacy infrastructure promises that were part of the larger Games project, including new and upgraded sporting facilities and social and affordable housing in Geelong and regional Victoria.

Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan voiced his disappointment at the decision, saying councils job from here was to advocate for the legacy projects Geelong had been guaranteed.

We have been promised huge amounts of tourism, economic, social and sporting benefits from these Games, Mayor Sullivan said.

More than 7500 jobs were to be created post- and pre-Games, more than 1200 procurement opportunities for local Victorian jobs These are all lost now.

This was marketed as, and truly was, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve our sporting infrastructure, our affordable housing stock, to strengthen our community and sporting culture.

We want to ensure that the legacy benefits that have been promised by the State Government do come to fruition. Well be holding the government to account for this. The Premier made a promise to regional Victoria and we expect him to follow through.

Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine (TGGB) executive director Tracy Carter said while the Games cancellation was an absolute disappointment and a lost opportunity to showcase the region, the early timing of the decision meant the local tourism industry had not invested too heavily to date.

Were disappointed for our industry, some of which have already put in quite a bit of work in trying to figure out how they can partner with the Games, Ms Carter said.

These sorts of things dont come along too often. There was such a lot of excitement, so its just a real shame for that not to have eventuated.

Certainly, we hadnt got to the point of doing any investment of funds; it was really all preliminary and strategic thinking.

What it did for our industry was unite everyone behind a shared, aspirational source of excitement. (Our job now is) to harness the excitement that was there. We have to grow our international visitation through other means.

For more stories on the Games cancellation, see page 3.

Request for stamp duty waiver for flood-affected residents denied "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A local flood-affected resident contacted The Echo around their disappointment that a request was denied by the NSW Labor government to have stamp duty waived on new purchases for flood victims who were saying yes to a buyback.

As previously reported, buyback offers made by the the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) are at post-flood market rate, and there is little transparency around the appeals process. The NRRCs responsibilities were transferred to the NSW Reconstruction Authority on July 1.

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous said, At our most vulnerable time, when we need support now more than ever, not only are NRRC failing to aid the recovery process, but the NSW state government are also failing to read the room.

They said the NSW Treasury Department replied, Unfortunately, under current legislation there is no discretion for the gover...

It all began with an Ugly Man competition! Thats right, in 1950, the Ugly Man Competition raised $1,221 towards the building of proper learn-to-swim facilities in Mullumbimby.

According to Mullumbimby Happenings, by Reg Byrnes, many local male identities raised funds on the basis of three pence (2 cents) per vote.

From there, it was a range of fundraising events and carnivals that eventually became the Chincogan Fiesta, including Matron of the Mountain, Queen competitions and Maid of the Mountain.

Old Byron Woolies car park DA is back  make me the Gold Coast! "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

An artists impression of The Bohemian from the DA.

A $57.2 million mixed-use residential and retail development planned for the heart of Byron Bay is back on public exhibition, after the owners decided to modify their plans.

The Bohemian, a three-storey 7,093 square-metre structure proposed for land adjacent to the old Woolies site has drawn a mixed response from locals so far.

One unimpressed resident described the project, proposed for 90-96 Jonson Street, as Gold Coast lite, while another said it was a greedy undertaking.

The Development Application (DA) has already been approved by Council, but has recently been resubmitted with a number of significant modifications and is now on public exhibition. This includes reducing the number of proposed apartments from 54 to 44, and increasing the number of living and private open space areas.

The number of units may have shrunk, but The Bohemian remains a sizeable proposal, including basement car parking for 168 vehicles, ground floor retail and food premises with two levels of two-and three-bedroom apartments above.

INTERVIEW: Mike Benz Exposing Gov-Big Tech Censorship Industry "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

With the rise of the public-private mass-censorship industry, federal agencies have built a command and control communications pipeline directly into Big Tech with frightening implications for the future of free, open and democratic societies.

In this episode of the Patrick Henningsen Show on TNT Radio which aired on July 18, 2023, Patrick talks with former US State Dept. official and executive director of Foundation for Freedom Online, Mike Benz, about the rise of the public-private mass-censorship industry based in Washington DC and Silicon Valley, but whose tentacles now span internationally. Federal agencies like the DHS (and its censorship arm CISA), the FBI and others have built a command and control communications pipeline directly into Big Tech, and deploy weaponized A.I. tools where they can enact speech control operations and manipulate political outcomes, and even elections. We discuss its emergence following Crimeas breakaway from Ukraine in 2014, and its proliferation in the aftermath of the 2016 election of Trump. All this and more. Listen:

The recent terrorist attack carried out by the US-UK-NATO axis and their Ukrainian proxy is an attempt to disable Russias Kerch Bridge which connects Crimea to the Russian mainland. Will their plan work?

In this episode of the Patrick Henningsen Show on TNT Radio which aired on July 17, 2023, Patrick talks with Irish journalist based in Moscow Chay Bowes, about the recent terrorist attack by the US-UK-NATO proxy regime in Kiev, as they attempted to disable Russias Kerch Bridge which connects Crimea to the Russian mainland and isolate Crimea in the process. Kiev still insists that they plan to retake Crimea, although this seems like a highly unrealistic projection. Was this an act of desperation by Zelensky and his handlers in Washington and London? As the Country Burns, Where Are Americas Climate Patriots? "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Deep-red Texas is baking under a heat dome. True-blue Massachusetts is choking on the smoke of Canadian fires. Purple-state Arizona is scaling back residential construction as severe drought grips the Southwest.

The apolitical wrath of climate change has never been more apparent than it is today, begging the question: How can we forge a non-ideological consensus to take on the climate emergency?

The notion of a bipartisan crusade against the ravages of climate change in hyperpolarized America may seem positively quaint, especially with a Republican Party still largely denying the severity or, in some cases, the existence of the climate crisis. But in a nation where neither major party has been able to maintain unified power for more than a congressional cycle since 2007, what is the alternative?

The nation is under assault from an enemy that does not distinguish between races, creeds, religions, or political affiliations. The ravages of climate change are coming for all of us.

The urgency of the climate crisis does not allow for Pollyanna delusions of a progressive political tide that would rapidly usher in an era of aggressive climate policies. And even in the highly unlikely event of sustained, unified Democratic governance, recent history offers little assurance that Democrats would embrace the far-reaching agenda needed to stave off the worst effects of climate change. Indeed, the Democratic Party, both at the national and state level, has more than its share of climate incrementalists and outright fossil fuel industry apologists. Joe Manchin may be the bogeyman for climate activists, but he is far from alone among Democrats in his bowing to petrochemical interests.

So where does that leave us? Perhaps the answer is to reframe the need for urgent climate action in the most American of ways: as one that puts love of country above all else.

This is not a mere marketing strategy, but an approach guided by the undeniable facts of climate change. The nation is under assault from an enemy albeit one of our own making that does not distinguish between races, creeds, religions, or political affiliations. The ravages of climate change are coming for all of us.

In such circumstances, the only rational response is one that encourages alliances which transcend our broken politics and reject the doomsday path of denial, accommodation and gradual reform. The new climate patriot could be of any political persuasion, and could be just as easily...
