Cathartic and personal: Cable Ties chat All Her Plans on Arvos with Jaimee Taylor-Nielsen "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

  • Cable Ties :: interview with Jaimee Taylor-Nielsen

Cable Ties latest album All her Plans is a fast, powerful and raucous record that is sprawling in its thematic exploration. From mental health and addiction, love, dealing with a failing healthcare system, and to living in a world post Roe v Wade, the album is brought together by its unapologetic, personal storytelling.

Jenny McKechnie and Shauna Boyle joined Jaimee Taylor-Nielsen on Arvos to break down songs from their new album and discuss the process of writing, recording and releasing them.

Penned by guitarist and vocalist Jenny McKechnie, Perfect Client and Silos are fast and drivey, with blistering guitars and impassioned, powerful vocals. Theyre also two of the tracks where the anger of the album really shines through. Jenny witnessed the failings of the public healthcare system up close through a friends experience, forming a fiery expression of exasperation at the vicious cycles of addiction and complex mental health.

Its just a kind of constant cycle between...

Sailor Moon, fiddling and Natural Brown Prom Queen Sudan Archives on Up For It! "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

Swag and charisma inspired by Sailor Moon, and violin mastery inspired by fiddlers, Sudan Archives is a fully realised artist to watch.

Ahead of her Eora/Sydney Splendour sideshow, Sudan Archives caught up with me on Up For It! Her most recent record Natural Brown Prom Queen features the violinist, singer and producers trademark instrumentation, conceptually exploring the ties between home, family, and belonging. The album is so easy to relate to, delving into the experiences so many of us have entering adulthood.

When we were growing up, me and my sister couldnt wait to leave Ohiowe just felt like it was not the place to be if you want to do musicOnce we left, we kind of missed it, you kind of learn to appreciate it more, especially being in L.A which can be a weird place at times. You have to be grounded.

Known for her mastery of the violin, I keen to get the story on how she first got into playing and how this developed into her signature style. Sudan Archives first came across classical instrumentation from a group of fiddlers who did some lessons at her school.

I grew up in a small town called Wyoming in Ohio, when I was in 4th grade they had an orchestra at the school and they had some fiddlers come in one day from Canada or Ireland, somewhere out of the country. They were like were here to teach you about fiddle music, I was like okay?. They were playing the violin but they were dancing while they played, doing Irish jig. I was kind of intrigued, like okay I think I can do that. I started playing and havent stopped ever since.

Youll find Sudan Archives name drops Sailor Moon frequently on Natural Brown Prom Queen...

The Perilous Dangers of Artificial Intelligence "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

AI experts say that AI could potentially start new cults, become an influential propaganda machine, disseminate misinformation and fake news, incite widespread public distrust of the media, thus corrupt free speech, and can ultimately defenestrate democracy.

Today, the Australians for Artificial Intelligence Safety Group created an open letter calling for the Australian government to take AI safety seriously and regulate the industry.

Despite calls around the globe and mounting concerns of the real-world harms that AI contributes to, a spokesperson for Australians for AI Safety Group said Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic, dismissed these warnings stating they are darkly negative. Members of the government, then, are not taking the catastrophic or existential risks of AI seriously, unlike other countries including Singapore and the UK. Singapore has created the AI Verify Foundation, working to develop AI testing tools to enable safe and responsible AI. Similar safety-focused government labs are proposed in the UK.  Australia is yet to propose a national lab of this kind.

Beholding and seeing "IndyWatch Feed Seq.art"

Im still not sure what British mythologist Martin Shaw means by beholding and seeing does he want us to pursue beholding before seeing? I have used seeing as something more intuitive than looking so maybe he uses beholding and seeing as I use looking and seeing. I look in order to see. I sense he is suggesting that beholding takes a lot of looking and then, we finally see, albeit intuitively. In colloquial terms to me it means take a while to stop, be still, present, look and let the space as with this pool on my daily walk this morning seep into my soul. Stop the rush!

As I was walking this morning I broke my own rule and had my smart phone out and looked at an image on Instagram and suddenly realised that I was missing this pool and the fallen leaves with the still texture of tress watching the madness on the bordering road in the early morning work rush traffic.

And I was reminded of that famous photo of a group of young women in a gallery sitting on an ottoman in front of a significant work of art on their phones as I had been this morning.

Streams of consciousness have never been so far from in these days of visual acquisition and rapid eye movement. A need to be still, slow, looking, listening and being calls quietly.

Not collecting but communicating.

Not hoarding but hearing.

Not promoting...

Anglesea players head to Edinburgh "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

APA will perform Shadows of Angels, directed by Iris Walshe-Howling and Janine McKenzie, at 3pm and 7pm at Lorne Community Connect on Saturday, July 22.

Based on true events and set in the slums of Melbourne in the 1920s, the play focuses on four women and their connections to a violent crime.

Played by talented actors Stacey Carmichael, Julie Fryman, Lina Libroaperto and Nikki Watson, the four women relate their recollections of the horrific events, slowly exposing the mysterious connections that led to the crime.

Shadow of Angels features a haunting and emotionally rich original score composed and performed live by Kirsten Honey that intensifies the works themes of marginalisation, gender, sexuality, class and crime.

Co-director McKenzie said the issues explored in the play, as well as its poetic and powerful language, were what drew her to Shadows of Angels.

Three of these characters operate in the shadows of society so the spotlight is put on these characters who would otherwise not have a prominent voice and place in the telling of Australian stories and history, she said.

Women are placed very much at the forefront of this story. I think its really important. Were telling this story because there are echoes and shades of those lives still present in our own society.

APA will also hold an open rehearsal of Shadows of Angels at Kildare Theatre, Clonard College on Sunday, July 23, the last rehearsal before heading off to Edinburgh.

The open rehearsal will also include a performance a/lone, a dynamic physical theatre work featuring Stacey Carmichael that is also travelling to Edinburgh Fringe, at 6pm. Entry will be via donation.

Geelong welcomes Victorias best fly fishers "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

The Geelong Fly Fishing Club will welcome fly casters from across the state when it hosts the Australian Casting Federations (ACF) Victorian Fly Casting Championships this weekend.

Held at the Geelong Casting Pool at Barwon Valley Park in Belmont on Sunday, July 23 between 9.30am and 3pm, the event features three accuracy events and three distance events.

Competitors will vie for awards for both disciplines as well as the title of Victorian Champion for the aggregate top scorer across all events.

Geelong Fly Fishing Club member and ACF vice president Ron Heath encouraged members of the public to wander down, watch the event and speak to club members if they were interested in taking up the sport.

Were always encouraging people to come down and have a look, Mr Heath said.

We always get people having a look and asking questions about it, and I always find that if theyre interested enough to come and ask questions they might just come along and try it.

Mr Heath has represented Australia at the sports world championships and is currently the official casting coach for the ACF.

He said fly casting was a fantastic sport for people of all ages and one that would improve anyones fishing.

Ive been fly fishing since about 1967, and (involved in competition) since about 1970; a long time, Mr Heath said.

Its all about the camaraderie. Im 80 years old and I still enjoy it. Its all about catching up, having a chat and talking a bit of rubbish; thats what most fishermen do.

The club will also host the national championships in Geelong on August 20.

Regional house prices lowered "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Its a good time to buy a home in the Greater Geelong region, according to new data from the Real Estate Insitute of Victoria (REIV).

House prices dropped by 4.4 per cent in Geelong during the second quarter of this year, with many areas across the region seeing more than a two per cent movement in each direction.

Drysdale had the biggest median price drop, which fell by 9.4 per cent with a median sale price of $700,000, followed by Barwon Heads (-5.4&percnt) at $1.85 million and Belmont (-4.8&percnt) at $690,000.

Other suburbs to see a more than two per cent quarterly price decrease during the April to June period were Portarlington (-4.6&percnt), East Geelong (-3.5&percnt), and Corio (-2.9&percnt).

Manifold Heights had the largest quarterly growth with an increase of 22.8 per cent and 1.21 million median sale price, while Geelong West rose by 0.5 per cent at $1.01 million.

REIV president Andrew Meehan said it was interesting how Greater Geelong house prices had lowered during the quarter but increased over the past six months.

As the markets seen with the quarterly change increase regionally from Victoria, I would expect that to be continuing and would be reflected in the Greater Geelong pricing, he said.

The prices are stable, were seeing increases elsewhere, so despite them being down for the quarter but up for the six months in Geelong, Id say its a reasonably good time to buy.

Mr Meehan also said the days on the market for homes were less than the regional average, with many suburbs recording less than 40 days, such as Highton and Corio, which reported only 31 days.

Its a good time for buyers to be entering the market with a bit of a downturn in the last quarter, but up in the last six months, he said.

From what I am hearing there is strong buyer demand which is probably why theres shorter days on market in the Geelong area.

Film festival fundraiser for historical society "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Film fans will have the opportunity to support the Bellarine Historical Society (BHS) when it partners with the North Bellarine Film Festival (NBFF) to present acclaimed Australian film The Drovers Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson.

The Drovers Wife is the directorial debut of Indigenous playwright and actress Leah Purcell, who also won Best Lead Actress at the 2022 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards for her performance in the films lead role.

The film will be screened at the Indented Head Community Hall on Sunday, August 6 as a fundraiser for the BHS.

The proceeds will be used to install a ramp for wheelchair and aged access at the societys Court House Museum site in Drysdale, where it holds its impressive collection of photos, records and maps of the Bellarine area.

BHS president Lorraine Stokes OAM thanked the NBFF for facilitating the event to help the historical society raise funds for the access ramp.

The NBFF committee have come up with this idea and theyll run the movie night for us, which is fantastic; its really good of them to help us out here, Ms Stokes said.

Were a volunteer organisation, we receive no funding from any level of government. We raise our own money through research, book sales and donations.

We get busloads wanting to come in from aged care facilities and elsewhere, but we dont have access for people whove got disabilities. So this fundraiser will allow us to be open to everybody.

NBFF chair Bill Lussier said his organisation was proud to help the BHS with its fundraising efforts.

The North Bellarine Film Festival is happy to support the BHS, which has an important role in documenting and educating residents and visitors about the regions history and cultural identity, he said.

A step back in Rock n Roll time to 1959 "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

J OK.

The only live rocknroll feature film ever made in the 1950s began its screening in May before setting off on a nation wide tour of Australia.

Miraculously retrieved from a certain journey to the local tip, Melbourne resident Mark Iaria discovered the film while visiting a yard sale clear out in Melbournes northern suburbs.

After three years of research and restoration, RocknRoll has hit the highway for a modern day roadshow across the country, beginning its journey on May 22 at the Dendy Newtown in Sydney, and then weaving its way throughout Australia for the remainder of 2023.

Lee Gordon

The brainchild of American Lee Gordon, whose entertainment company blossomed in Australia during the 1950s and early 60s, RocknRoll sat on the top of the NFSAs most wanted list for decades, after the only copy thought to have survived was accidentally taken to the local tip in the early 1970s by a removalist working for the director of the film, Lee Robinson.

A closer peek at Franklins pre-election promise failure "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

NSW Nationals MLC, Ben Franklin is now President of the NSW Legislative Council. Photo David Lowe.

NSW Nationals MLC, Ben Franklin, has avoided taking responsibility for an unfulfilled $6M funding promise he made just prior to his party losing the state election in March.

As reported last week, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital (BBWH) faces possible closure, after a NSW government panel deemed the facility did not demonstrate value for money in its funding application.

This is despite the panel recognising the hospitals expertise and experience in the provision of veterinary and rehabilitation services for injured native animals.

The decision was supported by NSW environment minister, Penny Sharpe (Labor) at arms length.

Sharpes office told The Echo at the time that the NSW Labor government never promised the funding, and instead says it supports action on dwindling koala numbers.

Yet it is unclear what other government assistance is afforded to other native and endangered animals on the North Coast.

Franklin, who is now President of the NSW Legislative Council (upper house), told The Echo, Prior to making the announcement, I...

Shedshaker Brewing launches Castlemaine Keg for Good, raising money for community groups "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

Renowned for its range of fresh, handcrafted, small-batch craft beers, Castlemaines Shedshaker Brewing has launched a new community program aimed at raising money for local groups to help them pursue their goals.

Named Castlemaine Keg for Good, the money raised each month will be donated to a nominated local community group, starting this July.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Locally loved for its fresh beer, local wines and delicious food served in a funky arts space with live music and an eclectic arts program, Shedshaker Director Jacqueline Brodie-Hanns said the Keg for Good is another way Shedshaker is helping the community.

Once a month, well throw a keg on the bar for our Castlemaine Keg for Good, she explains.

People can then visit the Taproom, order a pot or pint of our Pale Ale and pay whatever amount they like as a donation to the cause.

Combining donating to local groups with a lovely cold beer seems like win-win to us!

Shedshaker will donate 100% of proceeds from the keg to the chosen group and let everyone know how much money was raised.

The brewery has selected Red Box Wildlife Shelter as the first donation recipient, a dedicated wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation site for Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Brushtail Possums. Their mission is to Rescue, Rehabilitate, Raise and Release along with teach Compassion, promote Education and encourage Advocacy.

For our first Keg for Good, we will be donating money to Red Box Wildlife Shelter, who do brilliant work looking after kangaroos and other animals, including those hit by cars or injured in other ways and getting them back on their feet.

On Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 of July, from 5pm to close, all donations for a pot or pint of Pale will go to this great charity.

Like many others, we admire Nikki and Scotts dedication to protecting and helping kangaroos and are thrilled they are the first local organisation we can help with this program.

Each month will feature a different local group to spread the goodwill around the community.

Ballina Council hires consulting firm to help create Shaws Bay plan "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Shaws Bay in East Ballina. Image Ballina Shire Council

The Ballina Shire Council has outsourced initial development of a Shaws Bay management plan to a locally based private consulting company.

The move comes as conversations continue across the country around the merits and risks of governments depleting public services in favour of hiring often expensive external agencies to do work in the public interest.

High profile consulting firms PWC and Deloitte are making headlines for all the wrong reasons, mostly around their exploitation of government information for commercial interests.

They are two of the so-called big four consulting firms to have received millions of dollars in public funds for years to do government work, as part of a trend that some commentators trace back to the era of John Howards prime ministership, while others say it was Gough Whitlam who first acted on scepticism towards public service department workers.

National politics and history aside, the consulting industry may well be thriving at a smaller scale thanks partly to local governments struggling to maintain staff.

The 197203 lot, a staged subdivision at 226 Invercauld Road, Goonellabah, called Eastwood Estate, has been rejected by the Land and Environment Court (L&EC).

This is an amazing outcome, it is a credit that Lismore City Council (LCC) councillors who twice voted to reject the development to have their decision upheld by the Court, Al Oshlack from the Indigenous Justice Advocacy Network told The Echo.

The development application (DA) by McCloy Project Management to create 203 new residential lots and a residual open space lot and associated ten new roads, bulk earthworks, essential services (water, sewer, power & telecommunications), stormwater management facilities, landscaping and environmental rehabilitation was rejected by LCC on 26 July, 2022.

Low confidence throughout business sector "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jeremy Crawford said this weeks announcement that the 2026 Commonwealth Games would not go ahead was not a huge shock.

Citing a cost blowout from the budgeted $2.6 billion to possibly over $7 billion, Premier Daniel Andrews cancelled the Games, which was to be held in Geelong and three other regional hubs.

Despite the Games cancellation, Mr Andrews recommitted to the legacy infrastructure promises that were part of the larger Games project, including new and upgraded sporting facilities and social and affordable housing in Geelong and regional Victoria.

Mr Crawford said that while the announcement was surprising in that no one saw it coming there had been low confidence among the business sector.

There has been very low confidence due to a lack of clarity and certainty coming out of the government, especially over the last few months or so, he said.

We havent had any businesses that have been hanging their future hopes and dreams on the Commonwealth Games.

But what we have had is obviously some feedback from different parts of the business community who might be impacted by this, particularly our sporting organisations that we partner with the chamber.

The business sentiment is that what were looking forward to is working with the government on where this investment is going to and making sure that its utilised appropriately.

Mr Crawford said there were some businesses who had begun planning for the Games.

There are some businesses that I spoke to today who were looking at growing, expanding or even starting because of the opportunity of the Commonwealth Games, he said.

There are probably in the minority, but what we really want to make sure of is that when the investment goes into some of these bricks and mortar projects whether its sporting stadia, community provisions or even a regional tourism package, that the ability for the services to be sustainably delivered is there with that support as well.

Mr Crawford said there were more than 4000 jobs to be created from the Games, pre- post- and during the event.

And that has a lot of affiliate industries that would have ridden the wave of putting Geelong on the map internationally including the tourism sector, the hospitality sector and a lot of the retailers that obviously would have benefitted from a huge increase in foot traffic in and around the Geelong regions and sporting precincts, he said.

With all of that now seemingly completely lost, what we want to know is how can get the government to work with organisations like the Chamber and others to make sure that those opportunities for businesses still exist and over the next period of time where theres investment going in there that the provision of those services would have been offered for businesses to tap into, there still remains opportunities for them to grow.

Committee CEO disappointed "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Committee for Geelong CEO Michael Johnston said he was disappointed to learn of the cancellation of the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Games, to be held in regional Victoria, including Greater Geelong, was scrapped by Premier Daniel Andrews on Tuesday due to escalating costs associated with the event.

This represented a unique opportunity to showcase Geelong on a global stage, boost our visitor economy, and deliver a range of legacy benefits for the region, Mr Johnston said.

Those local businesses who had already spent considerable time and effort in tendering will have been dealt a double blow by this news.

The announcement of a $2 billion Region Fund in its place is welcome, and it is pleasing to hear Geelong will continue to receive the legacy infrastructure benefits the Games promised to deliver. In particular, the creation of more affordable housing is desperately needed, and we would be hopeful that additional dwellings can be added.

Mr Johnston said it was also positive for residents in the citys southern growth corridor, with the Armstrong Creek Aquatic Centre, Waurn Ponds indoor sport facility, and hockey pitch at Torquay to be completed (along with the upgrade to the Stead Park hockey facility in Norlane).

With regards to the construction of the housing and sporting infrastructure, there are some important questions that need to be addressed, he said.

What is the timing? The Games provided a firm deadline. Without that deadline, we seek assurances that these projects are not delayed.

The other question is whether local businesses will be prioritised through the procurement process? This was a key component of the Victoria 2026 procurement approach and provided Geelong businesses access to significant Government work. It is imperative on the Government to maintain this approach, and support local businesses in supplying the legacy projects. We have the skills and talent here. Use it.

Comm Games shock "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Geelong council and industry leaders have reacted with shock and disappointment after Daniel Andrews announcement this week that the 2026 Commonwealth Games would no longer go ahead.

Citing a cost blowout from the budgeted $2.6 billion to possibly over $7 billion, the Premier cancelled the Games, which was to be held in Geelong and three other regional hubs.

Despite the Games cancellation, Mr Andrews recommitted to the legacy infrastructure promises that were part of the larger Games project, including new and upgraded sporting facilities and social and affordable housing in Geelong and regional Victoria.

Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan voiced his disappointment at the decision, saying councils job from here was to advocate for the legacy projects Geelong had been guaranteed.

We have been promised huge amounts of tourism, economic, social and sporting benefits from these Games, Mayor Sullivan said.

More than 7500 jobs were to be created post- and pre-Games, more than 1200 procurement opportunities for local Victorian jobs These are all lost now.

This was marketed as, and truly was, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve our sporting infrastructure, our affordable housing stock, to strengthen our community and sporting culture.

We want to ensure that the legacy benefits that have been promised by the State Government do come to fruition. Well be holding the government to account for this. The Premier made a promise to regional Victoria and we expect him to follow through.

Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine (TGGB) executive director Tracy Carter said while the Games cancellation was an absolute disappointment and a lost opportunity to showcase the region, the early timing of the decision meant the local tourism industry had not invested too heavily to date.

Were disappointed for our industry, some of which have already put in quite a bit of work in trying to figure out how they can partner with the Games, Ms Carter said.

These sorts of things dont come along too often. There was such a lot of excitement, so its just a real shame for that not to have eventuated.

Certainly, we hadnt got to the point of doing any investment of funds; it was really all preliminary and strategic thinking.

What it did for our industry was unite everyone behind a shared, aspirational source of excitement. (Our job now is) to harness the excitement that was there. We have to grow our international visitation through other means.

Old Byron Woolies car park DA is back  make me the Gold Coast! "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

An artists impression of The Bohemian from the DA.

A $57.2 million mixed-use residential and retail development planned for the heart of Byron Bay is back on public exhibition, after the owners decided to modify their plans.

The Bohemian, a three-storey 7,093 square-metre structure proposed for land adjacent to the old Woolies site has drawn a mixed response from locals so far.

One unimpressed resident described the project, proposed for 90-96 Jonson Street, as Gold Coast lite, while another said it was a greedy undertaking.

The Development Application (DA) has already been approved by Council, but has recently been resubmitted with a number of significant modifications and is now on public exhibition. This includes reducing the number of proposed apartments from 54 to 44, and increasing the number of living and private open space areas.

The number of units may have shrunk, but The Bohemian remains a sizeable proposal, including basement car parking for 168 vehicles, ground floor retail and food premises with two levels of two-and three-bedroom apartments above.

In this episode of the Patrick Henningsen Show on TNT Radio which aired on July 18, 2023, Patrick talks with former US State Dept. official and executive director of Foundation for Freedom Online, Mike Benz, about the rise of the public-private mass-censorship industry based in Washington DC and Silicon Valley, but whose tentacles now span internationally. Federal agencies like the DHS (and its censorship arm CISA), the FBI and others have built a command and control communications pipeline directly into Big Tech, and deploy weaponized A.I. tools where they can enact speech control operations and manipulate political outcomes, and even elections. We discuss its emergence following Crimeas breakaway from Ukraine in 2014, and its proliferation in the aftermath of the 2016 election of Trump. All this and more. Listen:

INTERVIEW: Chay Bowes Kerch Bridge Attack Shows NATOs Desperation "IndyWatch Feed Seq"

The recent terrorist attack carried out by the US-UK-NATO axis and their Ukrainian proxy is an attempt to disable Russias Kerch Bridge which connects Crimea to the Russian mainland. Will their plan work?

In this episode of the Patrick Henningsen Show on TNT Radio which aired on July 17, 2023, Patrick talks with Irish journalist based in Moscow Chay Bowes, about the recent terrorist attack by the US-UK-NATO proxy regime in Kiev, as they attempted to disable Russias Kerch Bridge which connects Crimea to the Russian mainland and isolate Crimea in the process. Kiev still insists that they plan to retake Crimea, although this seems like a highly unrealistic projection. Was this an act of desperation by Zelensky and his handlers in Washington and London? How is this affecting Russia, and what will it mean in terms of the Black Sea security and Grain Deal? All this and more. Listen:

Stunning documentary on the Swedish King "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

In an unprecedented coup of access to any Monarch, Karin af Klintberg assembled a documentary on King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.  He was the youngest monarch to ascend a throne at age 27 over 50 years ago.

Director and creator Karin af Klintberg had sent thousands of emails to finally spend many hours with the King in interviews over an extensive 2 year period.  Gustaf did not like much of the constant photography and public engagements that a King had to endure, and was regarded as somewhat reclusive, so the achievement of this film is unlikely to be surpassed.

The King [Kungen] is part of the Scandinavian Film Festival starting today.

Lobbying in Australia "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Lobbying groups are part of the democratic prosses in this country, yet the rules surrounding how they operate are vague at best. Lobby groups will have a more public presence this year leading up to the voice referendum, with multiple organisations on both sides ramping up their campaigns.

Lobbying is usually done behind closed doors, so this more public showing of lobbying is a good time to see how much sway Lobbyists have in parliament and what happens when they overstep their boundaries.

Qld 'whiteshoe brigade' developer Graeme Ingles, and Goldcoral Pty Ltd, determined to continue pursuit of the Iron Gate Development proposal in the face of a community which has been resisting development on this site since the 1990s "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Echo, 19 July 2023:

Evans Heads locals and other concerned members of the public form the Northern Rivers have raised concerns over Richmond Valley Councils (RVC) apparent lack of preparation to defend the controversial Iron Gates appeal currently underway in the Land and Environment Court (L&EC) in Sydney.

The development application (DA) was rejected by the Northern Regional Planning Panel (NRPP) in September 2022. An appeal was immediately launched by Gold Coast developer Graeme Ingles. Ingles has been trying to regain approval for residential development of the site since his approval was stripped by the L&EC in 1997 after illegal clearing and other works were done at the site. Remediation was required by the L&EC of approximately $2 million, however, this work has never been done by Ingles.

Deserved Cancellations: Victoria Rejects the Commonwealth Games "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Hosting sporting events has always been a governments formula to distract their seducible subjects.  Its the choir turned into flesh and performance.  If such occasions are of sufficient scale, they might even be political promotions, body beautiful types paraded and performing before clapping and glorifying spectators.  Sponsors also have their share of exposure. Horrendous expenses can thereby be justified, raids on the treasury written off in the name of improving societys spiritual being.

For all their heralded merits, mega sporting events usually have two clear outcomes: the budget blowout followed by the White Elephant syndrome.  In that effort, other spending programs will be slashed or sacrificed altogether.  But the propagandists will always shoot back: the sporting show is not merely the athlete on display but a form of renewal, a communal release.  Why such renewal cannot happen without the building of sporting facilities with public funds is never made clear, though much is made of consumer spending, be it on food, drink and accommodation.

Such issues, and more beside, have been ignited with the cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games by the Victorian state government.  Premier Daniel Andrews, in announcing the matter on July 18, stated that the cost of hosting the Commonwealth Games in Victoria would exceed A$6 billion, more than twice the estimated economic benefit the Games would bring our state.

Andrews explains the main reason for originally agreeing to host the Games: to deliver lasting benefits in housing, tourism and sporting infrastructure for regional Victoria.  It was flawed reasoning from the start, linking the hosting of a sporting event with a social, economic program.  But even more critically, the decision to host an event no one else wanted was made even as the states debt was ballooning.  Victoria faces deficits fed by the borrowing of A$31.5 billion worth in emergency funds to combat the COVID pandemic.  The cynics had to venture the point that this whole affair was an indulgent political gambit, at least in part: to pitch for the Games would earn rewards at the November 2022 poll.

Given such money problems, the burgeoning costs came to be seen as something of a nightmare.  This was hardly helped by the governments own decision to essentially avoid the pre-existing facilities already available in Melbourne.  The decision to spread the games across four regional hubs in Victoria was always going to swell the sum in any logistical sense.

In place of not hosting the games, the Andrews government is offering a comprehensive A$2 billion package to ensure regional Victoria still receives....

In the last decade, Neck Deep has been a force to be reckoned with, storming the charts both at home and abroad, selling a staggering number of records, packing concert venues to the rafters, and gracing magazine covers worldwide. Along the way, theyve shared stages with industry heavyweights and established themselves as a powerhouse in the business.

Their latest single, Heartbreak Of The Century, released earlier this year, captures the essence of Neck Deeps signature sound a perfect blend of catchiness, angst, speed, power, and just a touch of self-deprecation. Vocalist Ben Barlow describes it as a classic Neck Deep song that hits all the right notes. And lets not forget the Academy Award-worthy music video that accompanies it.

But thats not all. Before Heartbreak Of The Century, Neck Deep unleashed their 2022 single STFU, a track filled with thunderous guitar riffs and driving drum fills. It harkens back to the bands early days while also propelling them in an exciting new direction that leads straight into the heart-wrenching Heartbreak Of The Century.

Neck Deeps fourth album, All Distortions Are Intentional, dropped in 2020 via Hopeless Records, and it made waves across the globe. The album claimed the #6 spot on the prestigious Billboard Top Album charts and secured #2 positions on the Alternative, Rock, Independent, and Internet Album charts. In addition, it soared to #3 on the Vinyl charts in the United States. Across the pond in the UK, the album made a remarkable Top 5 debut on the Top Albums chart.
