Some songs resemble heartbeats, Snpers debut Super Snper resembles cardiac arrest. With its runtime clocking a mere 23 minutes, the Nashville-based punk outfits first effort adds a whole new meaning to short and sweet.

Although, sweet may not be the best adjective to describe the groups sound, short and manic is probably more apt.

Wasting no time in its approach, Super Snper throttles listeners with whirlwinds of frenetic punk riffs, supercharged percussion and Blair Tramels crazed vocals right from the outset. Opener Bed Bugs, marries intersections of garage, psych and noise, all in a crisp yet chaotic 34 seconds, Fitness adds rapidfire riffs that make it seem like Ian Teeple (guitar) is trying to set the world record for most licks per second, while Xerox sees Tramel barely take a breath as her high-pitched warbles raucously overlay themselves with each line. Its like the Powerpuff Girls on speed. 

But yet, its organised chaos, with songs like Defect and Running showcasing the groups stylistic adaptability through the inclusion of spacious grunge basslines, thin wire Vic Flick-esque guitar solos and sweeping symbol arrangements. A time capsule of items exploring the career of iconic Australian comedian Barry Humphries will be on display at Arts Centre Melbournes Smorgon Family Plaza until 30 August 2023.

The free display curated from the Australian Performing Arts Collection includes garments worn by Dame Edna Everage at the peak of fame, as well as programmes, screenplays and artefacts from Humphries meteoric rise.

Arts Centre Melbournes Head of Curatorial Margot Anderson hits nostalgic notes with the display, exploring the journey of the star.

It is challenging to sample Ednas expansive wardrobe, but we chose three costumes that have been favourites with visitors in the past. Barry Humphries donated a rich selection of Ednas costumes over many years creating a lively record of her rise from humble beginnings in 1950s Moonee Ponds to international megastardom in the 1990s, she said.

With more than one thousand individual items of Humphries career in the Collection, Anderson and the team channelled the vibrancy and uniqueness of Dame Edna for curatorial inspiration.

These costumes all have Ednas trademark pizzazz and a three-dimensional quality that would have made her performance on stage even funnier. In addition to the costumes, weve selected items from Barrys extensive collection including programmes, photographs and correspondence that capture the many facets of his career, she said.

The Australian Performing Arts Collection was founded in 1975 and is the largest specialised performing arts collection in the country holding close to 800,000 unique items relating to the history of circus, dance, music, opera, and theatre in Australia.

This display is located in Smorgon Plaza, Level 5 of the Theatres Building in front of the entry to the Fairfax Theatre. Visit the display before your show, to remember Barry Humphries iconic career.

The Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games have officially been cancelled with the premier today (18 July) confirming Victoria will no longer host the games due to financial issues.

Andrews revealed that the 2026 Commonwealth Games could cost as high as $7bn.

The games will not proceed in Victoria in 2026, Andrews said.

Whats become clear is that the cost of hosting these games in 2026 is not the $2.6bn which was budgeted and allocated it is in fact at least $6bn and could be as high as $7bn.

I will not take money out of hospitals and schools in order to fund an event that is three times the cost estimated and budgeted for last year.

The main reason we agreed to host the Games was to create a big lasting benefit for our regions with more housing, boosts to tourism and sporting infrastructure upgrades.

To make up for the loss, the premier has announced a $2 billion spending package for regional Victoria, which was to act as a boost for facilities in the host centres.

That money includes a $1 billion Regional Housing Fund to build 1,300 new homes across regional Victoria.

The government also revealed it is committed to improving sporting facilities across regional Victoria and says the planned upgrades that were to accompany the Games will still go ahead, including the likes of Eureka Stadium in Ballarat and upgrades to Bendigo Stadium.

DMAs are a three-piece rock band from Eora. Johnny Took, Matthew Mason and Tommy ODell make up the band, melding rock, pop and a list of other influences into their own unique sound.

DMAS covered Believe for triple j Like A Version back in 2016 and while Believe was sonically fitting for the band, DMAs still managed to put their own spin on the song. The pounding club beats and synthesised sound of the original gave way to a pair of acoustic guitars in the DMAs cover, while Tommys vocal was intimate, reverberant and forward, giving the song push and pull.

The guitars, with spacious leads from Matthew Mason, completed the arrangement, pushing the music in and out of of focus to make way for the lead vocal.

In the years since its release, the track has reached an iconic status in popular culture amassing a whopping 12.5M streams on YouTube, and reaching 2x ARIA Platinum status in Australia, with over 40.5M streams on Spotify alone.

In September/October, the band will embark on their biggest Australian tour to date, playing a massive 18 shows across 16 cities and towns including a sold-out show at the Torquay Hotel on 29 September.

There are two approaches to analyzing a situation:

1. Choose the desired outcomegenerally the one that doesnt require any major changes, sacrifices or downward mobility.

Their definition of an emerging artist means you are not signed to a major record company and you have not played major venues regularly. You are in the development stage of your music career.

There are few artists who can translate the work of Johnny Cash and bring it to the modern day like Tex Perkins. His affinity and reverence for Johnny Cashs career is evident in the way he approaches every song as if hes lived it himself.

Now youll see for yourself when Perkins returns to the stage with a brand-new show playing the songs of Johnny Cash. He will kick off The Man In Black tour in Sydney in September, before heading across the country over three months. Locally, hell bring the show to Ballarat Civic Hall, Ballarat and Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo on October 7 and 8, respectively.

Ronny Chieng has announced two upcoming Australian dates as well as a show in Singapore show set to take place in a few months time.

The award-winning comedian and creator has called Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore some of his favourite places in the world and will be stopping by for exclusive one-night-only performances in each city.

The tour follows Chiengs two Netflix comedy specials: 2022s Speakeasy and 2019s Ronny Chieng: Asian Comedian Destroys America!, both of which received global acclaim.

The comedian is also known for his roles in Hollywood blockbusters M3GAN, Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

He is a recurring guest on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and has been featured in TV shows including American Born Chinese and History of the World Part 2. Fans can catch him in the upcoming shows Vacation Friends 2 and Interior Chinatown.

Born in Malaysia, raised between Singapore and the United States and educated at the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University, Chieng is truly a global star. Early in his career, he was the co-writer and lead actor in the ABC TV and Comedy Central show Ronny Chieng: International Student, which was based on his experience of studying in Australia.

Again, he was at it, that charming show on two legs, playful and coy.  Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been burning the charismatic fuel of late, making the necessary emissions in visiting friendly countries.  Each time, he seems to be getting away with more and more, currying (pun intended) favour with his hosts and landing the necessary deals.

For all the excitement of going to a fellow cricket loving state such as Australia, no one was under any illusion about the prize.  Easy gains there on matters of commerce, education and security: a pliant PM, a pliant Cabinet, a political and business class hungering for access to a country which recently passed China as the most populous on the planet.  In all of this, Modi had the audacity to urge Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to do something about reported acts of vandalism against Hindu temples in Melbourne.

In scale, nothing was going to compare to courting the superpower that, for all its might, teeters.  On his June visit to the United States, Modi was building on earlier efforts to show India as a viable partner in a number of areas.

The Modi visit exemplified the calculations of the moment.  The US has been rather clumsy of late, engaging in a foreign policy described by former US Secretary of the Treasury, Lawrence Summers, as a bit lonely.  US foreign policy makers have tended to miss a bit or two, not least understanding the value Indian officials place on their military relationship with Moscow.  The Indian political establishment is also mindful about how useful New Delhi is seen in Washington, the traditional counter to Beijing. That counter, however, is seen as subordinate to maintaining US supremacy under the lecturing guise of the rules-based order.

Such poses are simply not acceptable in either the Modi worldview or those of Indian policy makers.  As Indias External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has opined with a tart frankness, Washingtons power can be described as a transient moment of American unipolarity.  To assume, arrogantly, that history was at its end at the conclusion of the Cold War was a Eurocentric analysis jettisoned by nationalism. It is exactly such nationalism that Modi brims with.

The joint statement from the two countries made familiar, and predictable assumptions.  Much of it was frothy.  Both Biden and Modi affirmed a vision of the United States and India as among the closest partners in the world a partnership of democracies looking into the 21^st century with hope, ambition, and confidence.  Naturally, there is no mention of Modis nationalistic....

From adorning countless Myspace pages in the early 2000s to proving that pop punk is alive and well decades later, beloved Budgewoi rockers Short Stack are back, playing their first shows since the sold-out capital city comeback tour, taking on regional Australia for the first time in over a decade.

Now armed with more powerful songs than hairspray, the band will work their way around the country this October with support from Hevenshe and The Beautiful Monument. Locally, theyll perform at the Torquay Hotel in Torquay on Saturday 7 October.

Recently sharing a brand new single, the 90s-soaked bop Shotgun Wedding, inspired by the bands own formative listening and overflowing with buoyant beats, affable melodics and lyrics thatll hurl you headfirst back to days of first loves and heartbreaks, the Budgewoi rockers have also announced the release of their 2009 album Stack Is The New Black which will be available on vinyl for the very first time on July 21 via UNFD.

Releasing in 2009, Stack Is The New Black featured singles Sway, Sway Baby!, Shimmy a Go Go and Princess amongst others, with the album certified gold and hitting #1 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart upon release.

Since first forming in the early 2000s, Short Stack have amassed a dizzying array of accolades, including being dubbed Channel V Oz Artist of the Year twice (in 2008 and 2010), scoring Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards Fave Aussie Band in 2010, and plenty of gold and platinum-selling singles along the way.
