welfare advocates urge culture change in the wake of RoboDebt revelations "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Described as a crude and cruel mechanism, RoboDebt received thorough investigation in the final Royal Commission Report, with the assessment stating the unlawful Scheme made many people feel like criminals.

Following a condemning account of federal ministers and public servants, the report made 57 recommendations, including a change in social attitudes towards welfare recipients.

With thousands of lives left devastated by the Scheme revelations have again sparked major reaction from media and activists with a local poverty advocacy group urging the need to tackle the culture of welfare bashing that RoboDebt has come from.

Open letter urges the Federal Government to target university sexual violence "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Content warning: reference to sexual harassment

Over 40 groups and individuals Australia-wide have signed an open letter urgently calling on the federal government for immediate action to address sexual violence in university spaces, in the face of escalating rates.

Advocates say university leaders are claiming to have had zero tolerance to sexual assaults in the six years since the landmark Change the Course Report yet recent figures in the latest National Student Safety Survey reveal a different story.

The Wire contacted Universities Australia for comment on the issue Universities Australia chief executive Catriona Jackson said:

Sexual harm is a societal problem. We all have a responsibility to act, which is why universities are working hard to reduce instances of this behaviour on campus. Working closely with students and victim/survivor groups, Universities Australia launched the world-first, sector-wide Respect.Now.Always initiative in 2016. This set in motion the development of hundreds of measures and programs at universities across the country to prevent and better respond to sexual harm. Our universities have a strong understanding of their own unique demographics, their campuses and their students, which is why they are best placed to continue building on the extensive work undertaken to date. The policy frameworks, good practice guides and other resources we have developed with experts on behalf of the sector will continue to assist universities in combating sexual harm on campus.

DiDi is giving away one free ride per week for everyone in Melbourne "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

In a move set to shake up Melbournes transportation scene amidst the rising cozzie livs, rideshare giant DiDi has unveiled its grandest free rides giveaway to date.

For a period of six weeks, both new and existing customers will be entitled to one free DiDi ride every Thursday, with a maximum value of $20. This remarkable offer translates into potential savings of up to $120 per rider throughout the campaign.

DiDi Free Ride Thursdays

  • DiDi launches free rides for Melbourne users from 13 July 17 August
  • One free ride per week on Thursdays capped at $20 per person, per week saving riders up to $120
  • Comes as Myki fares rise to $10 a day following a surprise price hike

Stay up to date with whats happening in and around the region here.

Kicking off on 13 July and running until 17 August, the free rides program is expected to provide a boost to DiDis driver partners as well. With increased trip volumes, these dedicated drivers can seize greater earning opportunities, solidifying their financial foothold.

DiDi, having recently celebrated its fifth anniversary of operation in Australia, hopes that this groundbreaking initiative will alleviate the burden on numerous Melburnians. Many residents have found themselves exploring unconventional methods to cut costs, even contemplating side hustles such as rideshare driving to make ends meet.

Following the triumph of a similar promotion in Sydney, where users enjoyed a free weekly ride for 12 consecutive weeks, the spotlight now shines on Melbourne as DiDi rolls out this impressive campaign.

Were really excited to launch one of the largest giveaways that we have ever done in Melbourne. Our recent free rides campaign in Sydney was a huge hit giving away free rides across the city and helping customers save hundreds in the process, says DiDi Spokesperson Dan Jordan.

With the recent increase in public transport costs in Melbourne and ongoing cost of living crisis, this initiative is another opportunity for us to provide further value to both our riders and driver partners.

Weve seen demand grow significantly in recent months and were hoping this initiative can provide Melburnians with an alternative mode of transport that is financially viable. We also fully expect that this will benefit our drivers and help them by providing more trips on the platform and consequently increasing their earning potential, he says.

To redeem their free ride, riders simply need to enter the code FREERIDEM...

"IndyWatch Feed Vic" "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Smith and Co. Foods began as a passion project in Melbourne whilst owner Camilla was still working in the media industry. She noticed that there were no delicious, healthy options for corporate lunches and private catering in her area and so she began cooking for friends and family from her small apartment.

When life took a turn and her boyfriend said they were moving to regional Victoria for work, she decided to give Smith and Co. Foods a red hot go. What started as small food deliveries, soon turned into weddings and private events. Overnight, Smith and Co. Foods went from a one-woman business to a flourishing company with a strong team catering events for up to 1400 people and counting.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

In April 2023, Smith and Co. Foods took a leap of faith and moved to Mercer St in Geelong. Moving just felt right for Camilla; with her incredibly talented and amazing chefs based in Geelong and a noticeable rise in a younger demographic heading to the area. And with that brings a new clientele who want beautiful canapes and events with a Melbourne feel but in a regional city the best of both worlds.

Media bias even from the ABC on full display at Fadden By-election

Amounting to election interference, the mainstream media including the ABC have swanned in and out of the Fadden by-election pre-poll, ignoring all candidates except LNP and Labor. Independent Australia discusses the undemocratic details with some of the candidates in our exclusive pre-poll coverage.

Caused by the resignation of scandal-ridden LNP Member and Morrison confidante, Stuart Robert, the Fadden By-election should be newsworthy. Obvious biases aside, its expected that the Fourth Estate would nonetheless make a show of treating all 13 candidates equally. Certainly, the public broadcaster whose charter is to provide comprehensive coverage in the public interest should at least attempt to fulfil its duty.

But of course, we live in a country where media concentration is so blatant and the public broadcaster is so in step with the media moguls, no one even bothers to pretend otherwise.

When the media crew arrived at the pre-polling, a Legalise Cannabis Queensland booth volunteer asked whether they would be interviewing all the candidates:

I approached the Channel 9 female reporter and asked if they were interviewing all the parties present. The reporter replied, No were only paid to interview the Labor and Liberal party. Weve been told not to interview anyone else. My other team member approached ABC and was told something similar Only the major parties today.

When questioned on this matter, Australian Citizens Party campaign manager Ian Oliver told IA:

It made me very angry because we are supposed to be a nation of equality where everyone gets a fair go, where everyone in politics gets to state their message and let the voters decide.

Dog dies on track "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Geelong has had its first greyhound racing death for the year, marking 17 Victorian fatalities according to the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds (CPG).

Two-year-old Zipping Vienna died during Geelong Greyhound Racing Clubs (GGRC) July 8 meeting when she collided with another dog during race sixs first turn, resulting in a spinal fracture.

CPG Victorian director Joanne Lee said Zipping Vienna was the third Victorian greyhound this year to die from a broken back while racing.

The race video shows her falling on her neck and tumbling over at more than 60km/h. This is appalling abuse of these beautiful, gentle dogs, she said.

The racing industry knows curved tracks are lethal but refuses to transfer racing to safer straight tracks because they put dollars before greyhound welfare.

GGRC general manager Ray Bartolo said any greyhound injury or loss was tragic and distressing for the owners, trainers and staff.

Geelong GRC provides assistance to owners and trainers if a greyhound is injured, he said.

The connections of a greyhound are often distressed, and the club has in the past assisted trainers in transporting greyhounds to a vet clinic.

Greyhounds are very important to me as I have seven pet greyhounds that all raced and are now living happily in retirement.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) also provides funding to the owner or trainer of any greyhound that suffers a serious injury during racing to ensure the greyhound has immediate access to emergency veterinary care.

GRV said it was upset about Zipping Viennas death after an on-track veterinarian pronounced the dog dead.

The serious injury or loss of any greyhound is both tragic and distressing for our industry and particularly for the owners, breeders and trainers, a spokesperson said.

As with any incident that leads to a fatality on track, the circumstances will be formally reviewed by the Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit.

The incidence of greyhound racing fatalities in Victoria have more than halved over the past five years.

According to CPG data, there have been 67 greyhound track deaths and 5865 injuries in Australia this year.

Nowhere and everywhere: Wanderer Festivals second year is a big one "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Last year, Wanderer Festival was a welcome beacon for those tired of the overbearing joy the pandemic gave us all (jks, obvs). It was a festival for all, conveniently located halfway between Sydney and Melbourne while also being a three-hour road trip from Canberra. Set in the scenic coastal town of Pambula Beach, the three-day festival was a huge success, so much so that it was able to grow and return.

Yet another festival-brainchild from Simon Daly, who has given us Falls and The Lost Lands, Wanderer offered a diverse program, wrapped up in an event that aimed to be as green as possible. This year, these same ideas are taken even further, and we caught up with Daly to learn more about what to expect.

Point Lonsdales Mark Lang received $24,562 for his filmed podcast series Out to Sea, exploring the elements and business of how to make a sustainable art career.

Regional Arts Victoria Strategic Initiatives director Susie Lyons said the Regional Arts Fund received its largest round of applications for this round of funding.

At Regional Arts Victoria, we are proud to deliver this vital Australian Government funding program to communities in Victoria, she said.

Now more than ever, we are seeing more artists and communities engaging in this important and highly competitive program.

We want to thank the members of the independent assessment panel for their time and commitment in supporting exceptional and diverse arts practice in regional Victoria.

Minister for the Arts Tony Burke said the story of Australias art scene couldnt be told without the voices of remote and regional artists.

A key pillar of Revive, Australias new National Cultural Policy is to ensure theres a place for every story, and a story for every place, and this funding helps ensure that, he said.

Thats why the Albanese Government is increasing its support for the Regional Arts Fund by an additional $8.5 million over the next four years, promoting a thriving arts scene across the country.

Ballarat International Foto Biennale and Swan Hills Fairfax Youth Initiative also received more than $20,000 in project funding.

The Toads push the scope of Melbournes ever-emerging DIY-punk scene with debut In The Wilderness "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Anti Fade is more than just a record label. They have that whole Fast and the Furious its all about family vibe going on with members from almost every band on their roster chopping and changing to lend their services to their mates newest side project. And somehow, every new project that the label boasts not only maintains a distinct flavour from one another, they seemingly get better and better.

The Toads are their newest offering.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Finding their sound between the thin-wire garage rock guitar tones of Article 58 and the geeky, yet stoic nature of proto-punks The Modern Lovers, The Toads mark themselves as newcomers worth keeping an eye on.

In The Wilderness by The Toads

Their debut In the Wilderness showcases the groups self-described brand of nervy post-punk scuffle with finesse marrying sharp, tinny guitar tones with echoes of disco quirk and gothic drawl. Miles Jansens naturally despondent vocals uphold the groups sound, with his nonchalant demeanour and deadpan delivery maintaining the angst and boredom of UK garage punk, whilst simultaneously channelling adding an adjacent playful larrikin wit.

Through a combination of ragged 1970s surf-punk riffs (Two Dozen Functions), humdrum Brit-Pop melodies (Gimme Little More), and minimalistic post-punk rhythms (The Next Door), In the Wilderness marks itself as a debut release that continues to push the scope of Melbournes ever emerging DIY punk scene in refreshing new ways, while still gi...

Rock fern causing toxicity in cattle "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Rock fern causing toxicity in cattle and sheep. Photo supplied

Farmers are being alerted to the risk of rock ferns in their grazing paddocks by Local Land Services (LLS) who are urging livestock owners to be on the lookout for rock fern which can cause toxicity.

Rock fern is a hardy plant that survives dry conditions and reshoots readily after rain and is most toxic when new fronds are reshooting or growing which occurs during the autumn and winter, said a spokesperson for LLS.

Containing the toxin ptaquiloside, rock fern depresses bone marrow production of platelets and white blood cells in cattle, reducing the affected animals immune system and causing bleeding.

District Veterinarian North West Local Land Services, Dr Judy Ellemsaid we have had a few cases of deaths in young cattle over the past few weeks in the Gunnedah district.

These deaths are suspected to be caused by rock fern toxicity. Unfortunately, in most cases there has been multiple deaths, said Dr Ellem.

It takes two to four weeks before the effects of the toxin are seen in the animal, with recent affected animals being found dead in their paddocks. They have had blood from the nose and, or the anus.

Landholders are asked to keep a close eye on their cattle and watch out for symptoms. Cattle that are affected by the toxin will be off colour, out on their own, and they may have a fever, or other signs of infection. They may have blood in their faeces, dark wine-coloured urine, or a nasal discharge.

Other signs can include heavy breathing, demonstrating weakness and swaying when walki...

Bellarine Basin restoration a step closer "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Barwon Waters former Bellarine Basin is another step closer to being transformed into 30 hectares of public open space.

The state government has granted Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC) nearly $450,000 for works at the former basin, called Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk, on the corner of Grubb and Swan Bay Roads.

WTOAC interim CEO Liam Murphy said the organisation was thrilled to receive funding for the important project that would go toward improving the local environment in line with Wadawurrung values.

Mr Murphy said the funding would be put towards pest and weed control, the formation and running of a friends group for the area that will help care for Country on site, and towards a car park and walkways (towards which the majority of the funding will go) so people can safely access the site without damaging the native environment.

I am so pleased with the strong partnership between Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Barwon Water, he said.

Truly working together has meant that there has been significant input from Wadawurrung in the design process and in working towards an operational space for our Natural Resource Management team, which is very exciting and an example that other organisations can follow.

The new friends group, which is being coordinated by Bellarine Catchment Network (BCN), has held two weeding days at the site.

Friends of Murrk Ngubitj Yarram Yaluk will meet on the first Wednesday of the month, with the wider community welcome to attend and be an exciting part of the bush regeneration process from that beginning.

BCNs Matt Crawley said he was excited by the formation of the group, which had already got to work removing invasive plant species from the site to support aims of the project to care for Country.

The turnout for the friends group has been really strong, which shows how passionate local people are about this project and protecting and enhancing the Bellarines natural values, he said.

State announces early learning centre for North Bellarine "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

An early learning centre will be built in Portarlington the state government has announced.

In the recent Victorian State Budget, the treasurer confirmed that 50 new government-owned and affordable early learning centres will be built across Victoria in locations with the greatest need.

These centres will offer affordable childcare and free kinder to local families.

One of the centres will be established in the Portarlington Statistical Area 2 region, which includes the growing suburb of St Leonards.

To determine the best location for the centre, which is being delivered as part of the states Best Start, Best Life reforms, the state is working closely with local government and other stakeholders to understand where the greatest need for childcare is.

Having access to affordable childcare for families on the Bellarine is so important giving parents, particularly mothers, more options to get back to work while giving their children the best possible start in life, Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said.

With the growth we have seen in the Portarlington and St Leonards area, it is vital we have services such as childcare. We know the Bellarine its a great place to raise a family and this new childcare service will ensure local families are supported.

Why is it legal to tell lies during the Voice referendum campaign? "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

By Luke Beck

A referendum to recognise First Nations Australians in Australias Constitution by establishing a Voice to Parliament will be held later this year. The Voice would be an advisory body allowing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make representations to parliament and government on matters that affect them.

Campaigning for the yes and no sides is well under way. However, misinformation and disinformation are a feature of some of the public discussion. Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney this week even accused the no campaign of engaging in post-truth politics.

The Australian Electoral Commission has an online referendum process disinformation register. This is focused on disinformation about the referendum process rather than fact-checking claims made about the Voice.

Several media outlets including RMIT ABC Fact CheckAAP Fact Check and AFP Fact Check are publishing articles fact-checking claims about the Voice.

But why is it legal for politicians and other campaigners to lie to you?

Telling lies is legal

It is perfectly legal to spread misinformation and disinformation and tell outright lies about the proposed constitutional amendment, just as it is legal to tell lies during federal election campaigns.

While Australia has laws banning businesses from engaging in deceptive and misleading advertising about their products and services, there are no equivalent federal laws that apply to politics. By contrast, South Australia and the ACT have truth-in-political-advertising laws applying to their state and territory election campaigns.

There is one tiny exception to the current ability to mislead voters about the referendum. It is unlawful to mislead voters about how to fill in the referendum ballot form. For example, you would be breaking the law if your advertisement said people had to tick a box on the ballot form (when in fact you need to write yes or no).

Parliament decided to allow lies during the referendum campaign

The federal parliament passed up an opportunity to ban misinformatio...

Have your say on massive development plans for Saddle Road and Bangalow "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Page 17 of the The Northern Rivers Resilient Lands Strategy Summary Report.

Public submissions close Friday July 14 for vague fast tracked plans by the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) to upscale the populations of both Bangalow and Saddle Road. Saddle Road is located near the Mullum/Bruns highway turn off.

From July 1, the newly formed Reconstruction Authority subsumed the NRRCs staff and responsibilities, yet the documents are still on the NRRCs website.

The plans appear to be aimed at increasing considerably the housing density for the region, with rural zonings changed to residential to accommodate the developments.

According to The Draft Northern Rivers Resilient Lands Strategy Summary Report, land south of Bangalow could accommodate up to 500 dwellings.

The land, believed to be near Lavender Hill, is not included in the North Coast Regional Plan 2041.

Currently, Bangalows dwellings number is 1,080, according to profile.id.com.au.  Additionally, indicative land near the Bangalow Industrial Estate is identified, which could house more people in the medium term, yet no housing figures are provided.

Punch The Shark with Sweetie on Tuesday Arvos "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

  • Sweetie :: Interview with Jaimee Taylor-Nielsen

Lily Keenan and Rikki Clark make up half of local (self-described) devo-country-punk outfit Sweetie. The pair dropped by FBi Radio this week to chat to Jaimee Taylor-Nielsen on Tuesday Arvos. The conversation traversed their new EP Punch The Shark, the meaning behind its title track and the pros and cons of being in a band with a lifelong friend.

Sweetie released EP number two Punch The Shark in late June. As a body of work it portrays a new sense of confidence within the band. Sweetie found their voice on debut EP Collision and have well and truly unleashed it on their latest work. Lilys attitude towards the writing of the title track exemplifies this.

I just like the idea of lyrics that are sort of spitting at people. I wanted to embody that kind of energy.

The band describe the EPs title track as a resurrection song which sees Sweetie portrayed as a character. The persona in the song faces its fears, which manifest as a shark. Lily explained that the song can be linked to the band themselves, specifically their experience overcoming insecurities as musicians.

It was kind of like the first song that I wrote imagining Sweetie as a persona.
Starting this band was about stepping into a space that scared me and into something I didnt feel like I could do because I hadnt had a long past as a musician The persona in Punch The Shark and the persona of Sweetie is somebody who doesnt really care and is stepping into that space of power.

They have tested these methods in French and Hungarian, now Vanderbilt has a study underway in English which should reinforce their findings.

These are not the Star Wars story bots you're looking for. "IndyWatch Feed Seq.art"

Not sure how I missed the kerfuffle at Gizmodo, where managements insistence on running AI-generated copy started blowing chunks from the very first piece.

From WaPo:

A few hours after James Whitbrook clocked into work at Gizmodo on Wednesday, he received a note from his editor in chief: Within 12 hours, the company would roll out articles written by artificial intelligence. Roughly 10 minutes later, a story by Gizmodo Bot posted on the site about the chronological order of Star Wars movies and television shows.

Whitbrook a deputy editor at Gizmodo who writes and edits articles about science fiction quickly read the story, which he said he had not asked for or seen before it was published. He catalogued 18 concerns, corrections and comments about the story in an email to Gizmodos editor in chief, Dan Ackerman, noting the bot put the Star Wars TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars in the wrong order, omitted any mention of television shows such as Star Wars: Andor and the 2008 film also entitled Star Wars: The Clone Wars, inaccurately formatted movie titles and the storys headline, had repetitive descriptions, and contained no explicit disclaimer that it was written by AI except for the Gizmodo Bot byline.

Chaos ensued, with staff understandably concerned that their reputations would be fucked sideways just before they were all let go for a subscription to a robot copy service.

I feel their pain, bit I did enjoy the very human reaction to managements Slack message that the company was eager to thoughtfully gather and act on feedback There will be better stories, ideas, data projects and lists that will come forward as we wrestle with the best ways to use the technology.

Staff replied with 16 thumbs down emoji, 11 wastebasket emoji, six clown emoji, two face palm emoji and two poop emoji.

Terrible truths about nuclear energy exposed "IndyWatch Feed Sydney"

We are all seeing a global political agreement centred in the UN organisations, tie IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency], the World Health Organisation All the international agencies are whitewashing what is happening in Fukushima.

By Karl Grossman | 11 July 2023  https://independentaustralia.net/environment/environment-display/terrible-truths-about-nuclear-energy-exposed,17704

A NEW documentary titled The Fukushima Disaster: The Hidden Side of the Story is a powerful, moving, informative film that is superbly made. Directed and edited by Philippe Carillo, it is among the strongest ever made on the deadly dangers of nuclear technology.

Australians featured in the film are Dr Helen Caldicott, former president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and John Keane, professor of politics at the University of Sydney. Carillo is a resident of the nation of Vanuatu, 1,750 kilometres northeast of Australia.

The documentary begins with the words of U.S. President John F Kennedy from 1961:

Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by an accident, or miscalculation or by ma...

Safe or septic Japans nuclear wastewater dumping "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

RNZ, From The Detail, Tom Kitchin, co-host of The Detail @inkitchnz tom.kitchin@rnz.co.nz 11 July 23

There are diplomatic headaches and heated scientific debates after Japan revealed plans to dump the wastewater its been using to cool the Fukushima nuclear power plant  in the Pacific.

Sea and ground water has been used to cool the damaged reactors, and now theres about 1.3 million tonnes of that sitting in tanks while the Japanese government and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) figure out what to do with it.

They want to release the wastewater into the ocean  diluting all the cancer-causing nuclear fission products out of it  such as caesium, which can build up in muscles, strontium-90 which can build up in bones and iodine-129 which can build up in the thyroid.

. journalist Nic Maclellan, a Melbourne-based correspondent with Islands Business Magazine, tells The Detail.

The Pacific Islands Forum has been especially critical, and appointed an independent scientific panel to investigate safety issues around the proposed dumping, he says.

The panel has raised a series of issues around the quality of the sampling, the cost of the sampling, the cost of the programme over decades, the maintenance of safety sampling and the fact that they really dont know whether Japan can maintain the quality that will stop other radioactive isotopes being released into the ocean.

There are also questions over whether the wastewater dump is a breach of the Treaty of Rarotonga, signed in 1985, which created a South Pacific nuclear-free zone.

It was largely about nuclear weapons, but article seven talks about preventing nuclear waste dumping.

Japan has been acting as if these safety concerns are not serious and its taken a lot of pressure for Japan to be dragged kicking and screaming into addressing questions, many of which are still unresolved, Maclellan says.

With some 20 studio albums, 14 EPs, five live albums, six compilation albums and 22 singles behind them most released on their own A Records the band is nothing if not prolific. Since taking shape in San Fransisco in the early 90, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has built a reputation as a staple of the scene.

Their most recent release, The Future Is Your Past, came out in February this year and received praise from critics. The bands previous release, 2022s Fire Doesnt Grow On Trees, sprung up from an intense period for Newcombe as the artist wrote one song a day for 70 days during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bringing together elements of kaleidoscopic rock and droning shoegaze with an experimental edge, the music that emerged from this period just added to the rich discography that makes up the legend of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Since coming out of the pandemic, the band has toured throughout the US and Europe. Theyre all set to bring their mesmerising show down under this summer.

Fans can catch the captivating McMahon at Sydneys Metro Theatre on Wednesday 27 September, followed by a performance at Melbournes Northcote Theatre on Thursday 28 September.

Utilising a bolder, bigger, brighter expanse of sound than ever before, Light, Dark, Light Again is the follow-up to McMahons assured, ground-breaking 2019 debut album, Salt. That release hit #5 on the ARIA Album charts, and took home multiple accolades including the AIR Award for Best Independent Rock Album. The Melbourne singer-songwriters second LP was co-produced by Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby), songs written from the ashes of a tough but transformative few years of relationship changes, private breakdowns and core-shaking revelations.

The multiple ARIA nominee first entered the cultural consciousness via 2017 breakthrough track Slow Mover, with Salt cementing her as a globally recognised artist to watch. With an explosive live show reminiscent of Big Thief and The War on Drugs, Angie McMahon has become renowned for her truthful storytelling that speaks to the unpolished and messy experiences of life. Independent Artist of the Week: Bluetung "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

Musician Bluetung stands in a sunlit room, playing guitar

  • :: Bluetung on Surfacing with Luke M de Zilva

Combining organic and synthetic soundscapes that ebb and flow between distinguishable and distorted, Eora/Sydney-based DIY artist and FBis Independent Artist of the Week Bluetung offers something thats as much a sensation for your mind as it is for your soul.

On Surfacing with Luke M de Zilva, Bluetung described his latest album Eternity by the Stars as his noisiest and glitchiest project to date. The record combines aspects of traditional songwriting with his micro-sound inspired aesthetic, bringing something totally different to this alternative realm of music. Melding layers of dreamy, spacey and glitchy synths atop distorted and filtered guitars, your mind will simultaneously be cast into reminiscing about your past whilst also dreaming about your future.

Backing up his already prolific discography, counting 7 releases since 2018, Eternity by the Stars is Bluetungs expression of what it means to capture a moment in time. But what feels free flowing and expressive actually comes as a result of being a diligent and regimented artist.

More heart starters in Barwon South West "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

The Barwon South West region now benefits from six new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) that could help people with cardiac arrest.

The 24-hour publicly accessible life-saving machines were installed in Anglesea and Aireys Inlet thanks to the Anglesea Lions Club and Anglesea Community Banks fundraising efforts.

Ambulance Victorias Anglesea Branch team manager Matthew Van Der Ploeg said he was grateful for the generous donations of AEDs from the local groups.

Every day, around 20 Victorians suffer a cardiac arrest and only one in 10 survive, he said.

Minutes matter and the sooner a person receives cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation from an AED, the better their chances of survival.

Mr Van Der Ploeg said the device meant the possibility of returning more patients suffering from a medical emergency where a persons heart suddenly stops beating their loved ones.

A defibrillator is a lightweight, battery-operated, portable device used to shock the heart back into rhythm, he said.

Simply open it and follow the instructions. They are safe and easy to use and will not deliver a shock unless necessary.

Not only will it potentially save a life, but if it is used, Ambulance Victoria will replace the pads for free to ensure its ready to go again.

The new AEDs in Anglesea include the Anglesea Community Bank and Anglesea Pizza and Pasta at 63 Great Ocean Road, Go Ride a Wave and Four Kings Coffee and Food at 143B Great Ocean Road, and Anglesea Tennis Club at 19 Cameron Road.

Airey Inlet received AEDs at Strapper Surf on 83 Great Ocean Road, Aireys Inlet Community Garden at 2 Fraser Drive, and Aireys Inlet Community Hall at 6 Great Ocean Road.

Red-capped plovers welcome funding "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

The Bellarines Community Red-capped Plover Monitoring and Engagement program is helping further raise sustainable beach behaviour awareness thanks to a state government Coastcare grant.

The program started in 2017 and will share more than $350,000 in funding from the 2022-23 Coastcare Victoria Community Grant to educate people about red-capped plover breeding sites.

Bellarine Bayside coastal projects officer Jane Shearer said she was thrilled that they could continue helping the birds that relied on the beach to incubate their eggs and raise their chicks.

Red-capped plovers spend their entire lives on the beach, and they breed and raise their young during the busy spring and summer period when we humans like to flock to the beaches too, she said.

It can be difficult for them to have success in fledging their chicks. Programs like the Coastcare help us to support these lovely little creatures continue to thrive on our coasts.

Ms Shearer said the grant would help Bellarine Bayside support Birdlife Australia to educate the community on the local beach-nesting birds and red-capped plovers in particular.

The grant will help support the incredible work our passionate and committed community volunteers undertake, she said.

They collect invaluable data on the local colonies that helps Birdlife Australia obtain a clearer picture of the red-capped plover conservation status.

Ms Shearer said people should walk along the waters edge, put their dogs on a lead and move through the area quickly in temporary beach fencing areas to protect the birds while breeding.

The Coastcare Victoria program is in its 29th year of supporting coastal community groups and volunteers, funded by the $16.9-million VicCoasts program.

Bellarine Bayside can be contacted through social media or contactus@bellarinebayside.com.au for more information or to be involved in the red-capped plover protection program.

Anyone With Drugs, Put Them On The Table: The Redgum Years In The Sunshine State "IndyWatch Feed Seq.art"

John Schumann (ex-Redgum lead singer/songwriter) and the Vagabond Crew are returning to Brisbane with The Redgum Years in August. Here, Schumann reflects on gigging in the dark days of the Bjelke-Petersen regime, and finds Redgums protest songs from the 70s and 80s still apply today.

It was September 1979. We were staying in some crappy three-star holiday units in Tweed Heads and Tim Woods, our tour manager, assembled us in one of the kitchens after breakfast.

Redgum was very much a part-time band then. Two of us were high-school teachers so touring opportunities were confined to school holidays. Tim, now a successful concert promoter, was the only member of the touring party who had the faintest idea about the music industry and Queensland.

Okay, anyone with any drugs at all I mean at all  put them on the table now.

People shuffled uncomfortably and little by little, small quantities of marijuana in tobacco tins and Gladbags and the odd morsel of crumbly black hash in tinfoil appeared on the Laminex table. It was pretty pathetic, really. These days the combined stash would be considered well within personal use limit for one person.

Iconic Australian band, Redgum.

Right. Were going into Queensland. Were Special Branch targets so we need to be as clean as a bottle of Dettol. Smoke it now, flush it, bury it somewhere I dont care. But its not coming across the border.

Wed released our first album, If You Dont Fight You Lose, barely a year before. One of my contributions was a strident song delivered in my strangulated, nasal tones called Letter to BJ. It was addressed to Queenslands notorious premier and it had garnered a fair bit of attention on both sides of the civil liberties argument. Plenty of Queenslanders were dying to see us play it live. Plenty more would have been just as happy to see our heads on pikes lining the road out of Tweed Heads.

Last night Lismore Council looked at two issues involving the town of Nimbin, with both having speakers during public access. One would have been mistaken for thinking the speakers were in a court of law after the clearly hostile grilling they received from certain councillors in the chamber.

The first to speak was President of the Nimbin Chamber of Commerce, David Hyett, in regards to a Council report that was prepared to determine funding to be paid to the Aquarius Festival.

At the 11 April 2023 Council meeting it was resolved to provide the Aquarius Festival $10,000 funding.

The issue that had arisen was in regards to a traffic guidance scheme (TGS). Some councillors felt that as the festival went ahead without a certified TGS that the funds should be withheld.

The staff recommendation was that that Council resolve to withhold $5,000 of the original $10,000 funding to the Aquarius Festival, as penalty for non-compliance of traffic guidance scheme responsibilities by the Festival organisers, and immediately forward payment of $5,000 to event organisers.

Councillor Big Rob moved a motion that Council resolve to withhold all of the original $10,000 funding for the same reasons.

There was no seconder.

An unexpected change

Mr Hyett said that the proposal to reduce the funding after Council agreed to contribute the $10,000 was completely unexpected. I had attended a previous Traffic Advisory Committee meeting, at which they had asked me for details of the event, not a detailed traffic management plan, that came later, he said.

After the funding was approved, Council asked for a traffic management plan on every single event. At that time, we had 130 plus events in the pipeline. In reality, it was mostly small events over 10 days. There were a few larger events, such as a dinner at the town hall, plus a few events at the Nimbin Theatre. All the events chosen had appropriate approvals. So it was like nothing beyond what we would normally do in the village when we had something going on.

Festival alarm bells

Mr Hyett said that in hindsight, calling the event a festival was a mistake as the word festival set off alarm bells.

Cr Adam Guise said that the recommendation was essentially penalising the Nimbin Chamber $5,000 for not submitting a traffic guidance scheme. He asked Mr Hyett to clarify the agreement. Were you under any impression or communication from Council staff, that when you accepted the money, that you had to provide that [TGS]? Was that a condition to getting the $10,000?

Mr Hyett said that wasnt the case. No. Not at all. And we did actually submit a plan. The plan wasnt suitable and...

Cottage goes to solar power "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

The sun will shine on Queenscliffs Cottage By the Sea following the installation of a solar system and an electric vehicle (EV) charging unit which will together reduce its energy bills by almost a third.

Global low carbon energy and services company, ENGIE commissioned the fitting of the solar system and EV charger to the Queenscliff based charity using its subsidiary, Simply Energy.

The 22.4kW rooftop solar system will generate enough power to meet approximately 30 per cent per cent of Cottage by the Seas annual energy needs. An EV charging unit has also been installed, in anticipation of the organisation switching some of its vehicles to EVs in the near future.

Cottage by the Sea is an Australian childrens charity that aims to give more children more opportunities to have fun, be inspired and broaden their horizons. Founded in 1890 in Queenscliff, it provides tailored programs within a holiday environment.

The responsibility lies with us all as individuals and organisations to do what we can to reduce our impact on our beautiful planet, Cottage by the Sea chief executive Adam Wake said.

This is more than just funding, it has provided the impetus to help Cottage by the Sea move into this space, to use our large roof, and to create a carbon free facility with confidence. This all has a significant educational benefit for the children on our programs.

Simply Energy chief executive Shannon Hyde said while there were significant short-term cost advantages arising from the installation, environmental and educational benefits would also flow in the longer term.

Cottage by the Sea do incredible work with children to keep them engaged in education and community and most importantly have some fun, he said.

Were hoping the solar system and EV charging infrastructure can help to reduce their energy bills and free up some funding for future projects that benefit the families they support.

Firefighter makes first blood donation "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Aireys Inlet firefighter Andrew Wilson is doing more than fighting fires to help the community by making his first-ever blood donation.

Mr Wilson took part in the 2023 Red Cross Lifeblood Emergency Services Blood Drive by donating his blood to the program that runs from June 1 to August 31.

He said the process was quicker than he thought it would be and that the donation was another way for him to help others.

I was inspired by my wife, who is a regular blood donor, Mr Wilson said.

Ive wanted to do it for a long time, so I thought it was time to step up and do it myself and take part in the drive.

Aside from the interview beforehand to determine your suitability, the actual blood draw took me less than 15 minutes.

Mr Wilson said giving blood was like volunteering with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) as it allowed him to give back and help people.

Its easy, just do it plus, you get all the treats at the end, he said.

Its an extension of what we do at CFA. While it might not be in our direct community, its still helping others.

Its pretty neat, you get a text message a few days after your donation, and it tells you where your blood has gone, and mine was sent to the Mornington Peninsula.

You get a milkshake at the end, which is something to look forward to, but its super easy and probably sounds a lot scarier than it actually is, so pull together and join in the cause.

More information on the Red Cross Emergency Services Blood Drive and how to donate blood is available at www.lifeblood.com.au.

The two-tier economy "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Have you tried to get a tradie recently?

How about booking your car in for a service, or hiring a removalist that can fit you in before Christmas?

If youve tried calling any of these local businesses recently, youve probably discovered that demand for basic services like these is majorly outstripping supply.

Welcome to the north coasts two-speed economy.

While the local retail sector struggles under the dual pressures of rising interest rates and the increased cost of living, industries involved in providing basic, grass roots services are booming.

Many tradies have waiting periods of two months for an average-sized job, while some, such as carpenters and tilers, are almost impossible to get, unless youre willing to pay a premium.

The average wait to book your car in for a service in the Shire is two-to-four weeks, and if youre moving house within the local area youll want to plan at least eight weeks ahead.

A series of interviews conducted by The Echo with experts and those working in these industries suggest the boom and consequent shortages in these industries are the outcome of multiple factors.

They include the increase in demand for the building industry brought about by the 2022 floods, and the mass migration to the Northern Rivers during covid.

At the same time, there is a critical shortage of workers in some of these areas, particularly in the trades sector.

Jason Bentley, from the Byron Bay Chamber of Commerce, said the region was definitely seeing different industries at different levels.

The trade sector is going gang busters. Some are struggling to keep up with demand.

But at the same time, others are having to close down their operations or move out of the area.

Jane Laverty, President of the Northern Rivers chapter of Business NSW, said businesses in the region typically fell into one of three lanes: those that were really struggling, those who were hanging in there, and those who were seeing ongoing very high demand.

Golden triangle

All of these businesses are facing what I call the golden triangle, which is housing, staffing and skills, she said.

These are the three biggest challenges that pretty much everyone is facing.......

Rental price growth has...peaked! "IndyWatch Feed Seq"

Rental growth peaks

SQM Research has been ahead of the curve on picking rental market trends with its asking rents index ballooning more than 25 per cent higher in Sydney and some other cities.

In real time, they are now seeing the rental crisis easing as tenants push back on rental price increases and make more efficient use of the housing stock.

Nationally the rental vacancy rate ticked up from 1.2 per cent to 1.3 per cent in June, and asking rents actually declined over the past week in Sydney, for the first time in ages.

Looking at the smoothed 6-month trend, Brisbane and Adelaide and still very tight, but there are signs of pressures easing elsewhere.

Of course, there is still rollicking rental demand expected over the next 5 years - and there probably is a seasonal element to this - but this does suggest that we may be through the immediate worst of the rental crisis, especially in Canberra and Hobart, and much of regional Australia to boot. ...

New film: protecting the alpine peatlands "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

This is a beautiful short film about the alpine peatlands by Stephen Curtain.

It is based on the work of the Cross-regional Victorian Alpine Peatlands project and features interviews with Gunaikurnai elder Russell Mullett, Jess Haughton and Helen Wilson from North East Catchment Management Authority, Dan Brown from Parks Victoria and others. The project seeks to protect and improve the condition of the alpine peatlands which are scattered across the higher areas of the alpine zone. Threats include deer, weeds and fire. It also has some stunning aerial footage of Baw Baw and Buffalo plateaus and across the high plains.

As Stephen says of the film: The alpine peatlands are the kidneys of the Murray-Darling Basin. They clean and slowly release water in alpine Country for Countrys sake, not to mention the immeasurable value of water downstream for so many purposes. How we manage hard impacts on this fragile, slow-to-recover landscape is the opportunity before us.

When Net Zero Describes Common Sense And Progress, Rather Than Emissions "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Australias path to net zero emissions isnt so much rocky as it breathtakingly foolish. That is unless were all okay with wide-scale habitat destruction both here and overseas) while wasting trillions of dollars in the process. Geoff Russell weighs in on the renewables vs nuclear debate, which seems to be going from the bizarre to the absurdum.

Mathematicians often use a form of proof called Reductio ad absurdum. If you want to prove something is false, then assume its true and see what that implies. If the implication is false or contrary to something we know is true, then the job is done.

Heres an example. Suppose Jill and Joe are having a discussion. Joe believes in the power of prayer and Jill wants to prove that praying for something doesnt work.

JOE: If I pray, then I can pass my exam.

Jill assumes prayer works and so tries to see what that implies.

JILL: If prayer works, then few, if any Christians would ever have died from cancer.

Thats true if most Christians with a cancer diagnosis respond by praying not to die (from the cancer).

Jill: So, since many Christians die of cancer (every day), prayer doesnt work.

Theres a bit of slack in that argument. Maybe Christians dont all take to prayer when given a cancer diagnosis, and maybe some die without being diagnosed. A mathematician doing mathematics would be more rigorous, but Reductio arguments are often used in this rough and ready way.

Of course, you can escape the argument by exploiting a common loop hole.

Joe: Prayer definitely works, just not all the time and only if you are devout.

Enter Net Zero Australia.

New views of a cough: From TB and chronic cough to hope for Parkinsons "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Michael Shiloh had been studying tuberculosis for about two decades when he started wondering about a seemingly basic question: What makes people with TB cough? This is the diseases hallmark symptom and a main mode of transmission, but despite training as an infectious disease physician and many years of probing the pathogen as a researcher, Shiloh realized that he didnt know. A quick search of the literature suggested that essentially nothing had been studied about it, at least not at the molecular level, he says.

Elucidating the role of cough in illness means first appreciating its role in health. Cough is one of these critical defensive processes that we have to clear the respiratory system, says Stuart Mazzone, a neuroscientist at the University of Melbourne. But it also contributes to disease spread, as research by Shiloh, now at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and others has described. And dysfunctional control of coughing resulting in too much coughing or not enough can cause serious health problems.

Heres a look at how and why we cough, and some of the ways that coughing can go wrong.

Young workers denied retirement savings "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

A report by Industry Super Australia warns that an outdated law denying under-18 workers super contributions could cost them over $10,000 in the long term.

Approximately 375,000 young workers in Australia are locked out of the retirement system, as they are only eligible for compulsory super contributions if they work over 30 hours per week for the same employer.

Removing this discriminatory threshold would not only be fair to young workers but also remove the administrative burden for employers.

This exclusion affects over 90% of teenage workers who typically work fewer than 30 hours per week.

Young workers denied retirement savings "IndyWatch Feed Seq"

A report by Industry Super Australia warns that an outdated law denying under-18 workers super contributions could cost them over $10,000 in the long term.

Approximately 375,000 young workers in Australia are locked out of the retirement system, as they are only eligible for compulsory super contributions if they work over 30 hours per week for the same employer.

Removing this discriminatory threshold would not only be fair to young workers but also remove the administrative burden for employers.

This exclusion affects over 90% of teenage workers who typically work fewer than 30 hours per week.

The cost of diabetes on healthcare in Australia "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Diabetes continues to be a significant epidemic in the 21st century, resulting in numerous complications that affect vital organs such as the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and eyes.

In the past decade, significant progress has been made in diabetes management, leading to a reduction in these complications.

Due to the increasing prevalence of diabetes, there is a need for more extensive efforts at the public health level and the development of new therapies to further enhance the prognosis for this prevalent condition.

Western Queensland Winter 2023 Part 2 -Boulia to Cuttaburra Crossing "IndyWatch Feed Seq"

Letter-winged Kite

Following our travels through Longreach, Winton and Mt Isa (following post) we headed south from Mt Isa to Boulia, with rain dashing hopes for further stops for Kalkadoon Grasswren. It had eased by the time we got to Boulia. Continuing south to Bedourie, the Mitchell grass and gibber plains were a sight to behold: a glorious mosaic of wildflowers, vivid greenery, extensive pools of water and lush vegetation in every direction. The bothersome rains that were reshaping our travel plans had a silver lining.

Not long after Bedourie we located a Letter-winged Kite colony that had been reported earlier. These rare birds, under threat from feral cats, are pure pleasure. We had about 12 adults and immatures soaring high and sometimes low above us, mixing with Black Kites and other raptors. In a line of trees along a small watercourse, a pair of Letter-winged Kites held vigil over a nest containing two well-fledged youngsters. Several nests were present in o...

The Fukushima Disaster: The hidden side of the story "IndyWatch Feed Sydney"

Arnie Gundersen speaks of the clich that the solution to pollution is dilution, but with the radiation from Fukushima being sent into the Pacific, there will be bio-accumulationwith vegetation absorbing radiation, little fish eating that vegetation and intensifying it and bigger fish eating the smaller fish and further bio-accumulating the radioactivity. Already, tuna off California have been found with radiation traced to Fukushima. With this planned further, and yet greater dispersal, thousands of people in the Pacific basin will die from radiation, he says.

Exposing the nuclear industry and its lies.  https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/07/08/labour-explore-ai-ban-decisions-nuclear-weapons-david-lammy/

The Fukushima Disaster, The Hidden Side of the Story, is a just-released film documentary, a powerful, moving, information-full film that is superbly made. Directed and edited by Philippe Carillo, it is among the strongest ever made on the deadly dangers of nuclear technology.

It begins with the words in 1961 of U.S. President John F. Kennedy: Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by an accident, or miscalculation or by madness.

It then goes to the March 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plants in Japan after they were struck by a tsunami. Their back-up diesel generators were kicked in but  did not run for long, notes the documentary. That led to three of the six plants explodingand theres video of thisreleasing an unpreceded amount of nuclear radiation into the air.

Fukushima is the worlds largest ever industrial catastrophe, says Professor John Keane of the University of Sydney in Australia. He says there was no emergency plan and, as to the owner of Fukushima, Tokyo Electric Power Company, with the accident its CEO for five nights and dayslocked himself inside his office.

Melbournes Triple R radio on The Palestine Laboratory "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

My interview with Melbournes Triple R Radio program, The Grapevine, about my new book, The Palestine Laboratory:

The Palestine Laboratory is a new book by journalist Antony Loewenstein that documents how Israels subjugation of the Palestinian people serves as a testing ground for weapons and surveillance systems that are then exported around the world.

Built on extensive research, interviews and on-the-ground reporting, the book draws on modern events including Harvey Weinstein, 9/11 and the current crisis in Ukraine to show the consequences of a military industrial complex that facilitates the persecution of groups in many parts of the world.

Antony joined Dylan and Kulja on The Grapevine to talk through it all.

Whats happening in Palestine is not staying there the occupation is being exported The technologies and tools that Israel has developed over decades whether its spyware drones or facial recognition technology is now a massive export business to countless countries around the world.

ABC National helps UDIA push to cover golf-courses with housing VIC "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

We predicted this would happen when the Vic government put developers in charge of and regional Victoria.  The seizure of these green public and private lands is now being normalised on public media. Affected and ordinary citizens are not being interviewed, or their community organisations, such as Planning Democracy, PPLVic, Sustainable Population Australia, only property developers, who are given an undeserved moral authority via the ABC, simply by promoting their opinion via interviews that allow them to justify overdevelopment and overpopulation without putting any of the obvious logical challenges to their false and self-interested arguments. Australians deserve more, much more from the ABC.

Max Shifman of the Urban Development Institute was interviewed on ABC Radio National 792 Brisbane today around 8.30 am about a push to develop golf courses in Melbourne's South Eastern suburbs - which would include the Mornington Peninsula. This interview used and abused the problem of Australian homelessness as an excuse to overturn hardwon community land and property rights that have to date prevented wholesale slaughter-planning.

Shifman, without any acknowledgement of the utter irony, pointed to the 'need to house new migrants' who he suggested don't want to live in high rise appartments - contrary to the Vic Government's current 'policies' to build this stylel of dwelling (e.g. activity centres)  - but would rather detached homes. (So would most Australians, Mr Shifman - but not at the price the developer industry likes.)

The obvious rejoinder to the mention of migrants needing such developments to live in was that surely we should be limiting migration if it is causing us to disrupt communities and wildlife.  No such comment. The ABC is so apparently corrupt with regard to pleasing the developer-led agenda.

Of course, we have massive population pressure due to the political pressure groups that have been brought to bear on our polity by the property developer institutes and their financiers, who have got government to engage with a huge expanding migration program.  So, the Urban Development Institute has a history of issuing press releases to justify mass migration, yet we all have to put up with the ABC acting as if mass migration has nothing to do with such interest groups.

Every time I turn on the ABC, they are advocating more housing, more mi...

The commissioner will work with the government to design and implement changes that rebalance the rental market, making it fairer and more modern.

She will work with the Government and stakeholders to get moving on the reforms open for consultation now, including:

  • making it easier for renters to have pets in their homes
  • ending no-grounds evictions
  • implementing a portable bonds scheme that allows renters to transfer bonds from one property to another
  • improving the protection of renters information and privacy.

Beyond these proposed changes, the Rental Commissioner will also reportedly be responsible for identifying and investigating other issues that are impacting the NSW rental market.

The commissioner will examine rental affordability and supply, encourage longer term rental agreements, investigate ways to improve energy efficiency for renters, develop educational resources for renters and owners, and monitor current tenancy laws.

Miers re-signs at the Cattery "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Fresh off a career-high 32 disposals against North Melbourne on Sunday, Geelong Premiership player Gryan Miers has inked a new three-year contract extension that will see him remain in the hoops until at least the end of 2026.

The 24-year-old, who plays his 100th AFL game against Essendon on Saturday night, has enjoyed a career-best season in 2023, averaging 19.25 disposals and 1.75 goal assists per game.

This season, Miers role in Geelongs forward line mix has come into the spotlight, with a league-leading 28 goal assists whilst also sitting in the top 10 for score involvements with 110.

Renowned for his unique, effective kicking style, Miers has become one of the Cats most consistent performers this year.

A local Grovedale product, Miers was recruited out of the Geelong Falcons under 18s program with Pick 57 in the 2017 AFL National Draft.

Geelong Cats head of list management Andrew Mackie said the club was thrilled to see Miers commit for another three years.

Gryan is part of a very exciting, hard-working and talented group of young players coming through our AFL program, Mackie said.

Gryan has proven to be a very important player in our attacking half of the ground, he is a selfless footballer and a player who creates plenty of scoring opportunities. We are very pleased that he will be with us for at least the next three years.

Bridge battle doesnt disappoint "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

A pulsating Battle of the Bridge was played in some of windiest conditions ever seen at Ray Menzies Oval and while the Barwon Heads took the four points back over the river, there was perhaps more to like from the young Ocean Grove side.

With a howling northwesterly blowing pretty much across the oval, players from both sides, understandably, struggled to adapt to the conditions.

Barwon Heads booted two first-term goals and Ocean Grove didnt even score.

Things were tight in the second quarter until the Seagulls booted a flurry of late goals and took a 22-point lead into the sheds and almost anyone could have been forgiven the result was a foregone conclusion.

Anyone, but Ocean Groves players and coaching staff that is.

The Grubbers slammed on six goals to leave the Heads shellshocked and with a boisterous home crowd urging the side on, it looked like an upset was not only possible, but probable.

The Grubbers employed a more direct kicking game and clever use of short handballs to get them out of congestion had Barwon Heads in all sorts of trouble.

The Seagulls forward entries were haphazard and Ocean Groves defensive intercept marking was a highlight.

Halfway through the final term, Ocean Grove held onto a slender lead, but some Ollie Wiltshire magic saw the brilliant youngster boot two goals and the Seagulls won by 14 points.

In the end, perhaps Barwon Heads just knew how to win and Ocean Grove didnt.

No doubt belief and trust in your plan and teammates is one of the intangibles you get mostly from winning games together, Ocean Grove coach Dave Farrell said.

Barwon Heads have been doing that for a fair while so I guess that helped in a critical time of the game.

The trust our players have in our game method and each other continues to grow week in week out and our coaching group draw more from stats, vision and experiences than we do the scoreboard, I guess thats why coaches often review the losses harder.

Farrell said the club hadnt set a win/loss figure at the start of the season, but anyone who has watched his team over the course of the year would have been left in no doubt that the improvement has been obvious.

This season we didnt set a win/loss metric for what success looks like, player retention and development of our list have been our focus and were positioned well with five games to go finish with a pass mark for both, he said.

In the end it took a bit of Wiltshire brilliance and the difference between the two sides on Saturday wasnt great.

Yeah, hes a super talent and they have a spread of players of that calibre right across the ground so it is hard to keep on top of them all of the time, Farrell said.

For Ocean Grove, Jye Walker was a constant threat up forward all day.

He is our playing midfield coach and playing forward of centre the last couple of weeks has given him a different.....

Rail trail has smashed expectations, Tweed Council says "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Data released by Tweed Shire Council today shows more than 70,500 people have used the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) since its opening four months ago, significantly exceeding expectations.

The figures released today were calculated using data retrieved from counters strategically placed along the 24 km length of the Tweed section of the NRRT, which runs from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek.

Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said there had been significant interest in the opening success of the NRRT, with all user counts significantly exceeding expectations.

People enjoying the Tweed rail trail. Image supplied

I am really proud to confirm that since its opening on 1 March 2023, the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail has welcomed approximately 70,551 people, which is an amazing achievement, Cr Cherry said.

Our Rail Trail is welcoming an average of 17,638 people per month, which is approximately 4,048 people per week or an average of 578 people per day.

The original business case for the Tweed section of the NRRT referenced goals of 27,000 people per year which is equivalent to 9,000 people in the first four months. We have absolutely smashed that goal, attracting more than double the anticipated annual number of visitors in our first four months alone.

We knew the Rail Trail would be extremely popular and there was a lot of interest in this facility but this has blown us away!

Cr Cherry said these figures should provide confidence to the NRRTs other member councils of Richmond Valley Council, Lismore City Council and Byron Shire Council who are all either committed or considering connecting to the Rail Trail for the benefit of the broader Northern Rivers community.

With these impressive patronage numbers has also come confirmation that 87% of trail users have used an associated Rail Trail experience and spent money with a local business, whether it be one of the many cafs, restaurants, accommodation providers or bike-related businesses such as hire, shuttle or transport services, Cr Cherry said.

Many businesses along the Rail Trail have told us about their successes and we are continually working on trail improvements, addressing som...

A full orchestra, keyboard, electronics, and a massive labyrinth of drums, shakers, bells, cymbals, gongs and percussion come together to create an electrifying atmosphere to accompany the original adaption of Bram Stokers Dracula for the screen. An influential work of early filmmaking and the horror genre that followed, Nosferatu is considered a masterpiece of cinema, even 101 years on.

David Healy, psychiatrist and founder of RxISK.org said, I saw my first patient with PSSD in 2000, a 35-year-old lady who told me that three months after stopping treatment, she could rub a hard-bristled brush across her genitals and feel nothing. Josef Witt-Doerring, psychiatrist and former FDA medical officer said, This condition is so devastating that it will cause serious changes to your life and to those around you.

They concluded it was all in her mind.

Rosie went to a local youth centre for help, but they ended up sectioning her under the Mental Health Act with an Involuntary Treatment Order, insisting she take antipsychotic medication. I refused to take an antipsychotic because I knew I wasnt psychotic. Instead, they forced me to take another antidepressant against my will in order to leave the facility, said Rosie. It was the most traumatic thing Ive ever been through in my life. I fel...
