NSW Nurses and Midwives Association, June 2023: between Grafton and Maclean Hospitals another 40 nurses are needed to provide adequate staffing levels "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Grafton Base Hospital is a Level 3/4 rural community hospital with an est. 68 bed inpatient capacity which provides acute medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric, anaesthetic, geriatric, obstetric and maternity, intensive and critical care, renal, oncology, palliative care, emergency, some specialist outpatient services and day surgery facilities. Maclean District Hospital is a Level 3 rural community hospital with an est. <43 inpatient bed capacity, an inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and a Day Surgery Unit.

Clarence Valley Independent, 14 June 2023:

Between Grafton and Maclean Hospitals another 40 nurses are needed to provide adequate staffing levels say the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association as the Local Health District tries to fill 180 nursing vacancies across the region.

NSW Nurses and Midwives Association Clarence Valley branch secretary Thea Koval said without agency nursing staff being called in, who are paid significantly more than NSW Health nurses, Maclean and Grafton hospitals would struggle to operate.

Without agency nursing staff our hospitals would not be able to be run with the nurses employed only by NSW Health, she said.

Seeing the light "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Seeing the light

So it begins; he driving, me happy to be the passenger.

I know the Min Min is somewhere out there, somewhere beyond. No chance of even a glimpse until we shrug off the pull of the coast and plunge into the Outback. Leave far behind the coastal huddlers with their desk jobs, soft hands and short horizons. The Min Min isnt here, never would be. Have to turn away from the sea. Inland. Thats where well find it. Or not at all.

Hes taking this Toyota to a relative at Normanton in the far north and I grab the chance to go with him. I know hes not interested in the Min Min. For him this is just an Outback road trip for two grey blokes. Or maybe, for the well-read man he is, like the wanderings of Don Quixote with Sancho Panza.

Past Beenleigh and Ipswich, were on the Warrego Highway before long. Roadside has a veneer of grey gums and ironbarks. Move on up the range to Toowoomba, gateway to the famous Darling Downs.

"Were starting to pull away from the coast now," I say.

"How do you mean?" he says.

"Weve crossed the Great Dividing Range. All waters here drain inland, not to the east."

Beyond Toowoomba, busy grey clouds sloping away across the paddocks towards a low green strip along the south-western horizon. Here and there, low-set farmhouses shelter in clumps of trees well back from the road at the ends of driveways marked with fresh puddles.

Continue on past Dalby. More grey-cloud ceiling. Fallow fields and no trees nearby.

"This whole area used to be dense brigalow scrub before the First World War," I say.

"Whats brigalow?" he asks.

"A kind of wattle tree," I say. "Dark trunk and silver leaves. Only about 60 years since it finally gave up in the face of overwhelming machine and chemical onslaught."

Not visible from the car are the extensive coal seam gas fields in this area; gas trapped below ground in coal seams by the pressure of underground water. But its also a cropping area growing wheat, barley, chickpeas and more. Many farmers are unhappy; dont want drilling anywhere near their land. They say drilling has made their fields subside permanently. Whatever the truth of it, governments of both persuasions are backing expansion of the gas fields.

Gun-barrel straight road as I settle into a bit of a reverie. Road follows...

Virginity and violence in Tajikistan "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Virginity and violence in Tajikistan

In Tajikistan, women are still subject to discrimination and sexual repression, writes Johanna Higgs

"The situation for women in Tajikistan is really bad," said Dilraboi Davlatnazar, a Tajik lawyer. "Its still a very traditional society and there are very young girls who get married at 16 or 17. I think that this is very bad. If a woman gets married then she should be a virgin. If shes not, then it would be a shame for the family."

We were sat in Davlatnazars office in the small mountainous village of Khorog, Tajikistan in the northeast of the country, bordering Afghanistan. I had come to Afghanistan to learn more about the situation of womens rights as part of my global work to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.

I have come across many forms of violence and discrimination against women throughout the world, however, arguably one of the least acknowledged forms of discrimination is against womens sexual rights. Sexual rights being the right to have control over ones own sexual behaviour and choices.

Throughout the world, patriarchal norms and values continue to subordinate women and girls right to making their own sexual choices. In many cases, this subjugation of womens sexual rights is justified by religious, cultural or political ideologies that oppose or deny the existence of womens right to be sexual, or at least seek to restrict or control them.

Part of this discrimination is the expectation that women be virgins before marriage. Expectations that are not placed on men.

So much is the case in Tajikistan.

This emphasis on a womans virginity stems from so-called traditional values, that see a womans central role in society as being that of motherhood. Gender stereotypes and traditional attitudes dictate that a womans value and honour are directly linked to her sexuality, more specifically, ensuring her virginity before marriage.

Women who are not virgins before marriage may face social stigma, rejection, violence, or divorce which in some cases can lead to harmful practices such as early and forced marriages, polygamy, or bride kidnapping.

Such beliefs are essentially informal customary laws which are supposedly intend...

It's time for Albanese to stamp his authority "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

It's time for Albanese to stamp his authority

To ensure its longevity, the Albanese Government must pull recalcitrant public servants into line and take on the Murdoch media, writes Paul Begley

SINCE WINNING a comprehensive victory in the May 2022 Election, there is plenty of evidence supporting the idea that Anthony Albanese is proving the critics wrong in the way he has established his authority domestically.

That said, and mindful that Albanese has been in government for just over one year of a three-year term, there are ominous signs that suggest his authority may be short-lived.

Although the opposition Coalition is pitifully weak on numbers and wafer-thin on talent, it enjoys two advantages over the government that could see Albaneses authority head south just as Julia Gillards government did a decade ago.

The first is an advantage Albanese gifted to his political opponents by generously declaring he would not fire partisan public service chiefs. The second is his reluctance to take action against the Murdoch media empire.

On the first, both the Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme and the ACT Board of Inquiry into the ACT Criminal Justice System following the aborted Lehrmann rape trial, have shown senior public servants operating in ways that are consistent with a determination to remain loyal to the government that appointed and promoted them rather than to provide impartial advice as expected by a professional public service.

Competent public servants are capable of saying no minister when giving advice that takes into account the long-term public interest rather than short-term party political advantage. That became almost impossible during the Morrison years within a public service dominated at the top level by secretaries such as Phil Gaetjens, Mike Pezzullo,...

In which Polonius starts off the Sunday meditation, there's a detour with the Angelic one, and then a pice de tyke rsistance from the bromancer guaranteed to send stray readers screaming from the room ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Long ago in a time far away, angry Sydney Anglicans once stalked the pond's pages in the cause of a Sunday meditation ... and given the religious tone of a few of today's lizard Oz offerings, it seemed only fair to note that the bigots are still in business, and ducking and weaving at what their Uganda forays have produced ...

For once the pond must stray from the lizard Oz for Sydney at centre of global Anglican stand-off over sex and colonialism ...

Well if you can't find a complimentary woman to do your bidding, why not hang a gay?

There's more at the link, and there's more religion to follow, but first the pond must get past prattling Polonius, doing a fierce impression of a knee-capping hard man ...

Yes, yes, the pond swore it would never go there again, but the pond simply couldn't go past the splendid notion of parliamentary debate being "robust".

More Sydney buyers than sellers "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Auctions packed out

Property stock listed for sale remains exceptionally low, and Sydney recorded a surging preliminary auction clearance rate of above 80 per cent this week (albeit on fairly low volumes for this time of year).

Anecdotally there were some very busy open homes in Melbourne this weekend, though the preliminary auction clearance rate slipped to 69 per cent in the Victorian capital.

Has confidence down there been knocked a little by rising interest rates and proposed land tax changes?

Possibly.

One thing that is becoming increasingly evident is that the rental market in Melbourne is a steaming hot mess, with would-be tenants reportedly having dozens upon dozens of unsuccessful applications knocked back.

In the UK - over the past five years or so - policy has pursued the removal of tax deductibility of mortgage interest for landlords with now-record population growth, and - surprise! - the rental market is a disaster in the making.

Melbourne is apparently following down the same path, seemingly continually tightening the screws on private landlords, most recently by increasing the scope and rate of land taxes on rental properties...and this is in an already chronically tight rental market.

It's a daft move, with the Greens geniuses still calling for rent caps on top.

The grand plan was apparently to get big institutions to build the rental housing, but...

Daniel Ellsberg has died "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Daniel Ellsberg has died, aged 92. I dont have anything to add to the standard account of his heroic career, except to observe that Edward Snowden (whose cause Ellsberg championed) would probably have done better to take his chances with the US legal system, as Ellsberg did.

In decision theory, the subsection of the economics profession in which I move Ellsberg is known for a contribution made a decade before the release of the Pentagon papers. In his PhD dissertation, Ellsberg offered thought experiments undermining the idea that rational people can assign probabilities to any event relevant to their decisions. This idea has given rise to a large theoretical literature on the idea of ambiguity. Although my own work has been adjacent to this literature for many decades, its only recently that I have actually written on this.

A long explanation is over the fold. But for those not inclined to delve into decision theory, it might be interesting to consider other people who have been prominent in radically different ways. One example is Hedy Lamarr, a film star who also patented a radio guidance system for torpedoes (the significance of which remains in dispute). A less happy example is that of Maurice Allais, a leading figure in decision theory and Economics Nobel winner, who also advocated some fringe theories in physics. I thought a bit about Ronald Reagan, but his entry into politics was really built on his prominence as an actor, rather than being a separate accomplishment.

The simplest of Ellsbergs experiments is the two-urn problem. You are presented with two urns. One contains 50 red balls and 50 black balls. The other contains 100 black or red balls, but you arent told how many of each. Now you are offered two even money bet, which pay off if a red ball is drawn from one of the runs. You get to choose which urn to bet on. Intuition suggests choosing the urn with known proportions. Now suppose instead of a bet on red, you are offered the same choice but with a bet on black. Again, it seems that the first urn would be better.

Now, on the information given, the probability of a red ball being drawn from the first urn is 0.5. But what about the second urn. Strictly preferring the first urn for the red ball bet implies that the probability of a red ball being drawn from the second must be less than 0.5. But preferring the first urn for the black ball bet implies that the probability of a red ball being drawn from the second must be more than 0.5. So, there is no probability number that rationalises these decisions.

The title of Ellsbergs paper was Risk, Ambiguity and the Savage Axioms. As a result, the term ambiguity has been applied, in contradistinction to risk, to the case when there are no well-defined probabilities. But this was not the way Ellsberg himself u...

Uneasy Locations: The Russian Embassy Site in Canberra "IndyWatch Feed National"

They think we are mugs and its insulting. Its all fine for politicians to be swimming, swerving and tossing about in the goo of paranoia that is surveillance, chatting to the ghost called foreign interference; but to expect the rest of the citizenry to be morons is rather poor form. But the formula has always been such: We terrify you; you vote us in, and we increase the budget of the national security state.

Regarding the business of the Russian embassy site in Canberra, this is all the more stunning. Australias parliamentarians rarely pass bills and motions at such speed, but the measure to ensure that the Russian embassy would not have a bit of real estate 500 metres from the peoples assembly was odd, at best. On June 15, legislation was whizzed through, effectively extinguishing Russias lease.

It was also prompted by a rather bruising matter: the Russians had already been triumphant in the Federal Court. They had been granted the lease for the Yarralumla site in December 2008 by the National Capital Authority. But the 99-year lease was cancelled by the same body on the basis that ongoing unfinished works detract from the overall aesthetic, importance, and dignity of the area reserved for diplomatic missions.

Russia duly challenged the cancellation and won. In May, the court found in its favour, negating the cancellation of the lease. This seemed to have a curiously unifying effect in Parliament: agents of the Kremlin would be a mere stones throw away from the elected chamber.

Members of the Albanese government were tediously, predictably, on message, claiming that their intelligence services were all cognisant of a threat no one else could possibly take seriously. According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the government had received very clear security advice as to the risk presented by a Russian presence close to Parliament House. The whole parliamentary measure had taken place to ensure the lease site does not become a formal diplomatic presence.

The cabinets most eager of beavers, Home Affairs Minister Clare ONeil, affirmed the Prime Ministers concerns. The principal problem with the proposed second Russian embassy in Canberra is its location, she suggested. The government has received clear national security advice that this would be a threat to our national security and that is why the government is acting decisively to bring this longstanding matter to a close.

This entire comic episode also led Albanese to anticipate Russian stroppiness and reference to precedents in international law. This prompted the rem...

Survivors of a shipwreck off Greece's Peloponnese peninsula sit inside a warehouse at the port in Kalamata town, on 15 June 2023 (AFP)

Three days on and more questions than answers are emerging on how a rusty trawler carrying "hundreds" of people sank off the Greek coast in the deepest part of the Mediterranean Sea.

On Friday, the United Nations called for an urgent investigation into the incident as hundreds were feared missing - including 100 children onboard the vessel.

Greek officials said it recovered the dead bodies of 78 men, women and children in the immediate aftermath of the shipwreck on Wednesday. Since then, no bodies have been found.

Around 104 survivors - all men and primarily Syrian, Egyptian and Pakistani - were rescued after the incident, though as many as 500 more people are missing and feared dead.

But as Greek officials wrap up its search operation, many are asking if the Hellenic coastguard and its European partners could have done more to rescue people onboard the ship.

Unequal confrontation between Vilnius and Beijing "IndyWatch Feed National"

Unequal confrontation between Vilnius and Beijing

At the end of April in Lithuania, one of the major NATO countries, the local Foreign Ministry initiated a conference on NATO and the Indo-Pacific Region, where Vilnius tried to contribute to the unfolding confrontation with China in accordance with the trends set by the United States. It is noteworthy that the Baltic state stood out noticeably against the other participants the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand for its complete noninvolvement in the affairs of the region in question.

Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis insisted on the need to build closer cooperation between NATO and democratic states of the Indo-Pacific Region. He warned his colleagues about the increasing interaction between authoritarian regimes aimed at reformatting the world order. He called for abandoning the development of trade and economic relations with them, especially to get away from the EUs dangerous dependence on China.

Deputy Foreign Minister Egidijus Meilnas sounded even more bellicose, directly accusing Russia, China, and North Korea of cooperatively threatening the collective West. Reference was also made to the conflict in Ukraine, which Beijing allegedly uses to assess the ability of the democratic community to resist aggressive actions.

The lack of independence of the Lithuanian authorities, who are willing to get involved even in conflicts that are clearly detrimental and make absolutely no sense to them, is astonishing. In November-December 2021, the first incident in bilateral relations between Vilnius and Beijing already took place. The Taipei Trade Relations Bureau was opened in Lithuania, which, without official status, de facto performs the functions of a Tai...

And now, so Destiny has told me, I am one of them. I am most definitely not one of them but try convincing this bunch of extremists and eco-radicals. I have tried.

Destiny says:

"We read your book. Its brilliant. Its like a call to action."

I explain once again:

"Its just a story."

"I didnt even know how to pronounce it. Had to look it up."

"Ah-gah-pee."

"Love of humanity, love between god and mortals. Did I get it right?"

"Correct."

"Its perfect."

"Its just something I wrote years ago. Im a writer, not Che Guevara or Greta Thunberg."

"Greta tweeted how she loves your book. All those things you said in your podcasts and Youtube videos it is so inspiring."

"So, no word from Che?"

I recall a moment in the 60s, seeing the magazine pictures of his lifeless body with its rash of bullet wounds and make a mental note: thats what happens if you dont have a social media presence; you cease to exist.

"Destiny, hold on. Youve got me all wrong. Youre confusing the message with its sender. I am not who you think I am. Im a novelist, not a revolutionary."

Destiny has put on her serious face.

"Its like weve been chosen to put your ideas into action. We have one chance to save the world and were ready. But we need your help."

British band Royal Blood gives Scottish fans the finger "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

British band Royal Blood gives Scottish fans the finger

Why did British rock duo Royal Blood get stroppy last week and diss an audience in Scotland? Because people weren't 'enthusiastic enough'. Yes. Really.

ROYAL BLOOD AND "REAL MUSIC"

For context: it was BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend (R1BW) in Dundee. Dundee crowds are notoriously hard to please... apparently. BBC Radio 1 is the biggest pop music radio station in the UK and the gig had a relatively young audience of pop music fans.

So a poundingly loud, riff-heavy rock band being received with a lukewarm, bemused reception was almost guaranteed. And yet, in a sulky display of ill humour, lead singer Mike Kerr chastised the crowd about their lack of enthusiasm.

Footage from the show proves that the crowd were, in fact, getting into the set, but that wasnt enough for Kerr, who said:

Who likes rock music? Nine people. Brilliant.

And with that, Royal Blood walked off stage, giving the crowd the middle finger.

Last time I checked, the battle between real music and anything else was a thing of the past. Rock music, as a superior art form and the attendant prejudice that goes along with it, is all but done and dusted in the 21st Century.

If the annual Triple J Requestival (a week-long listeners-pick-the-music event) has taught us anything, younger generations and broadly speaking, large portions of the population  dont have such regimented, homogenous music tastes. Anything is up for appreciation.

Royal Blood would have been better to put on a good show: win the crowd over with hard work instead of whinging. Their music is arguably good enough to blow an audience away  had they just gotten on with it.

The pro-nuclear brigade dont give up, do they? (Dark times ahead, CCN393)

Despite much correspondence published in the past, I have yet to hear of a realistic scheme to safely dispose of not only the waste, but also the highly-radioactive reactor vessel once the plant has reached its commercial end of life.

Are these people deliberately ignoring this inconvenient truth, hoping that the sheep will not realise this obvious problem?

If and when a suitable scheme is developed then sensible people will no doubt support nuclear energy; unless that happens then it will be the subsequent hazards of fossil fuels all over again.

What exactly is wrong with renewable sources such as water, wind, solar, etc all of which are free?

I am familiar with the tired old argument that the sun doesnt shine all the time, but thats why we have proven technologies such as high-capacity batteries (chemical energy), pumped water (potential energy), etc.

The way some of these proponents carry on, youd think that they had shares in the nuclear industry.

How the Net Zero Debacle Could Make Australia the Wealthiest Country on Earth, Twice "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

It may well be the most ridiculous idea since the Childrens Crusade. But the net zero campaign still anticipates creating the biggest economic boom in Australia since the gold rush. Both the attempt to reach net zero and its inevitable failure promise to make select groups of Australian investors very rich.

Indeed, we could not have designed a country better suited to profit from the net zero boom and its subsequent doom. We have the natural resources needed for both the bubble and its bust, the industry needed to get at them, the political stability to make the most of it, and the experience of recent history to guide us.

It all reminds me of the Chinese mining boom of 200312 when Australia provided the resources needed to urbanise and modernise China. That era was so good for Australians that our dollar ended up well above parity with the US dollar. And it wasnt just because I migrated here in 2003 either

What Im suggesting is that net zero offers a repeat of this experience but on a much larger scale. This time, the entire world is trying to transition into a different sort of economy.

Also, instead of a bust following the bursting of the 2012 commodities bubble, Australia will discover that it has an abundance of the resources needed in the subsequent boom too.

Imagine being invested in the tech bubble and the housing bubble. Or the FAANG stocks and meme stocks. Thats whats in store for Australia a double whammy.

Let me explain why my usual doom-mongering is taking part in the Sunshine Coast Councils random public holiday today

The first part is quite simple. The net zero campaign requires eliminating or offsetting our carbon emissions. We planwell, we intend to do this in a variety of ways. This includes building renewable energy to replace fossil fuels, electrification of everything that uses fossil fuels, carbon capture and storage, power storage, and much more.

Unfortunately, all of this requires a lot of resources. An impossible amount according to those who bothered to do the maths. (Which didnt include the governments who committed us to the task.)

Conveniently, Australia is home to a lot of the resources that we need impossible amounts of. Top of the list is copper, the metal of electrification, but its a very long list.

Heres how The International Energy Agency, which may have to be renamed The International Energy and Mining Agency, summed it up, with my emphasis added:

[A] concerted effort to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement (climate stabilisation at well below 2 degrees global temperature rise, as in the [IEA Sustainable Development Scenario] SDS) would mean a quadrupling of mineral requirements for clean energy technologies by 2040. An even faster transition, to hit net zero globally by 2050, would require six times more mineral inputs in 2040 than today.

Welcome to the Global Financial Crisis of 2023 (Part Three) "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

The explanation for this bail-in/bailout distinction takes us back in the time machine to the period from 200814.

SVB is more than a wipeout for stockholders. SVB is the first example of a financial regulatory rule put in place by the G20 in November 2014 in the aftermath of the 2008 crisis. There was a popular outcry against using taxpayer money in 2008 to bail out bank CEOs who were making millions, and whose banks are still around. In response, the G20 agreed that in future financial crises, there would be no more bailouts with taxpayer money. The new approach was to be a bail-in.

This means that in the case of a failed bank, equity would be wiped out first, and then depositor funds would be converted to contingent claims if they were above the insured amount. Bank deposit insurance is US$250,000 per deposit in the US and 100,000 per account in the EU.

More than 95% of the deposits in SVB exceeded the insured amount. This means those deposits were gone, according to the FDICs press release on 10 March 2023. Depositors were to get a receivership certificate from the FDIC, which may or not have been worth anything depending on what the FDIC might collect from asset sales.

It could take months to ascertain the size of the SVB losses and a year or longer to sell assets. Depositors might ultimately get 90 cents on the dollar or 10 cents on the dollar. No one would know until the FDIC computed the size of the hole in the SVB balance sheet. The losses would get worse as the fire sale proceeded and asset values dropped further.

Contagion and systemic risk

The systemic problem is that those lost SVB deposits represent venture capital investments and working capital balances for thousands of tech startups and early-stage tech companies. They would have no cash to spare. This means they would not be able to make payroll, pay the rent, pay vendors, or conduct business. Those tech firms would likely fail, tens of thousands would lose jobs, and the ripple effects would spread from there.

The issue of contagion from SVB is interesting and not well understood. Everyone is worried about other banks failing. Thats a real possibility and is likely to happen. But thats far from the only kind of contagion.

Silicon Valley companies and tech firms around the world held in portfolio by SVB would see their stock prices decline as the FDIC conducted a fire sale of assets to pay creditors. Buyers would lower their bids knowing the FDIC was desperate to raise cash.

Theres an unhealthy tension between how quickly you dump assets and how much you can get for them. Generally, a slower approach gets higher prices, but that slow approach may strangle the startups. Top Venture Capitalist (VC) firms warned startups that if their money was lost in SVB, they would not be getting new funding from the VCs. So they would fail.

At The Australian, a severe reverse ferret has been required. But at last count, there is only one party thats ended the week with fewer senators than it began. The opposition would have been far better to have left The Australian to stew in its own sordid juices rather than following its lead.

The headline said it all, Oops! News Corp campaign to destroy Higgins takes out Liberal senator, (likely paywall), as did the lede ...After targeting Brittany Higgins and Labor, News Corp and the opposition have instead found that they've taken out one of their own in a disastrous week.

And yet as late as last night "the stenographers" were still front and centre in the commentary section, still bold as brass, but as putrid as month old sour milk ...

It wasn't just the reptiles ... Crikey also lost a grundling piece by the grundler: A statement regarding Crikey removing an opinion piece by Guy Rundle (likely paywall).

No need to go into the details of the imputations and errors, the lede will do: Crikey has made the decision to unpublish the article, and apologises to Brittany Higgins and readers.

In recent times, the grundler has attempted to become a tiresome latter-day Bob Ellis, with wild-eyed columns, pandering to the weirder elements in Crikey subscribers, but at least they decided to take him down this one time.

Far-Right grifter found guilty of running fake charity

Active during last year's devastating Northern Rivers floods, conspiracist influencer David Oneeglio has been found guilty by the Office of Fair Trading of requesting donations without approval, writes Tom Tanuki.

DAVID ONEEGLIO (known on social media as Dave Oneegs) was offered many opportunities by organised conspiracy as a "freedom" movement figurehead who stepped up at the start of the pandemic. He built a platform for ongoing merchandise sales, received overseas trips and built his conspiracist influencer brand during the height of the movement.

But he likely raised his largest pile of money in one fell swoop by collecting donations for another crisis: the devastating Northern Rivers floods of 2022.

And now Queensland's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has determined that he collected it all illegally.

Oneeglio helped raise over $320,000 intended for supporting Northern Rivers locals and paying for expenses associated with the 2022 floods. The unregistered collection front he created to do this was named "...

Australia Trying to Play Down War Crimes Committed in Afghanistan Russian MFA

Sergey Bobylev/TASS

MOSCOW, June 16. /TASS/. The Australian authorities are seeking to "soft-pedal" the war crimes that the countrys troops committed in Afghanistan, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Friday.

"Its absolutely clear that the ruling establishment of the Green Continent is trying its best to soft-pedal the issue of the war crimes committed by Australian troops in Afghanistan, a topic it finds very uncomfortable. In any case, this seemed to be the underlying reason behind the activity - or, more precisely, the inactivity - of the previous liberal cabinet led by disgraced Prime Minister Scott Morrison, which included a no less notorious defense minister, Peter Dutton," the diplomat noted.

"Members of veteran organizations, media outlets and some political forces not affiliated with the current authorities have been pointing out that attempts to close the shameful Afghan files by putting all the blame on privates and sergeants from special operations forces were unacceptable. In particular, Senator Malcolm Roberts of the One Nation opposition party suggested during parliamentary hearings in May that Chief of the Australian Defense Force General Angus Campbell return the Distinguished Service Cross that he was awarded in 2012 as commander of the Australian troops in the Middle East," Zakharova went on to say.

According to her, new data about Australian war crimes make it clear that "this issue is institutional and deeply-rooted, particularly in the elite units of the countrys armed forces." "The ruling circles attempts to hush the public outcry by taking only palliative measures indicate double standar...

The Emergence of a New Non-Alignment "IndyWatch Feed National"

Sahej Rahal (India), Juggernaut, 2019.

A new mood of defiance in the Global South has generated bewilderment in the capitals of the Triad (the United States, Europe, and Japan), where officials are struggling to answer why governments in the Global South have not accepted the Western view of the conflict in Ukraine or universally supported the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in its efforts to weaken Russia. Governments that had long been pliant to the Triads wishes, such as the administrations of Narendra Modi in India and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Trkiye (despite the toxicity of their own regimes), are no longer as reliable.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Indias Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has been vocal in defending his governments refusal to accede to Washingtons pressure. A retraction long overdue "IndyWatch Feed National"

RETRACTED. Another article on that bogus Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria nonsense has been pulled from the literature.

The usual suspects are all outraged at this rebuke. The odious Colin Wright wrote an article damning the journal he claims the retraction was over a minor, inconsistently applied technicality.

The technicality? Informed consent. Very minor. Totally unimportant. I dont know why we even bother.

For those unfamiliar with this slop, the assessment of the psychological state of young trans people was obtained by soliciting self-reports from their parents, parents recruited from web sites where people obsessed with trans issues gather. All their data was gathered from an anti-trans website! Its as if someone looked up the parents of scientists by finding their posted comments on Answers in Genesis, and then came to the conclusion that all evilutionists were formed by resentment of their pastors and association with god-hating school clubs, and determined that scientists were all pathological basket-cases.

I dont know how it got published in the first place. The authors are openly biased, they pulled all their data from an openly biased website, and they even admit in the paper that there is a chance their results were biased, and somehow, it got accepted anyway. Surprise, if you poll posters to a site called ParentsOfROGDKids, youll get testimonials to the existence of ROGD.

Another surprise: they even say in the paper that The initial purpose of the survey was not for scientific publication, but information gathering for a community of parents with shared concerns. Then, what the hell, they published it anyway.

Oh, and if you want to know where one of the authors, J. Michael Bailey (hey, I also mentioned him yesterday) is coming from, this might help:

Bauxite: Jamaicas Lucrative Red Dirt "IndyWatch Feed National"

Jamaica is a global producer of bauxite, a critical material used to produce aluminum. The Caribbean island, most well-known globally for its vibrant tourism industry, has exploited this red dirt for decades. While the industry remains profitable, there has been significant push-back recently, including a recent landmark Supreme Court ruling against a new mining project.

The importance of Red Dirt

In 2022, Jamaicas bauxite production totaled 7,048kt, up 22% from 2021, and the Caribbean island accounts for 2% of global bauxite production. The major global producers are Australia, China, Guinea, Brazil, and India; Jamaica hovers around the 10th place according to Statista, though other outlets put Jamaica in the seventh spot.

The top mining projects on the island are the St. Ann Bauxite Mine (owned by the government of Jamaica and New Day Aluminium), Windalco Mine (owned by United Company Rusal), and Alpart Project (owned by Jiuquan Iron and Steel: JISCO). In late 2021, United Company RUSAL (UC RUSAL) began making payments towards the US$35 million Bauxite Production Levy owed for the April 2018 to September 2021 period. In early June 2023, Mining Minister Floyd Green met with JISCO Alpart to discuss the companys plans for the reopening and resumption of plant operations, which has been stalled since 2019.

SPA: Australias population growth rate of nearly half a million too high "IndyWatch Feed National"

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) considers Australias population growth rate in 2022 too high and called on the federal government to put a brake on immigration.  The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the latest population figures today showing Australias population grew by nearly half a million (496,800 or 1.9%) in the year ending 31 December 2022. The two components of growth were net overseas migration (immigration minus emigration = NOM) at 387,000 and natural increase at 109,800.

SPA national president Ms Jenny Goldie says nearly half a million added to a population of 25.8 million from the year before was simply unsustainable.

As all recent and reliable surveys confirm, the Australian people are strongly opposed to whats going on, says Ms Goldie. Prime Minister Albanese knows this.

At 387,000, NOM is simply too high and must be cut, though Treasury is clearly planning to maintain these extremely high levels. Its rationale is to increase economic growth yet it takes no account of environmental and social factors.

And although immigration increases economic growth at the national level, at the per capita level, growth does not necessarily occur.

Our environment continues to decline with important habitats threatened by urban expansion, not least the last remaining Chlamydia-free koala habitat in Sydney.

And housing is simply not keeping up with the increased demand. Nor can other  infrastructure keep up with such unrelenting immigration-fed population pressures.

Western Australia experienced the highest growth of 2.3% in the country and, as a consequence, Perth is predicted to record the biggest shortfall of 25,200 dwellings by 2027.

Ms Goldie notes that, historically, new migrants have understandably gravitated to the major cities because that is where they are more likely to find people of their own nationality.

Our cities, however, are under immense strain with inadequate public transport and massive road congestion, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, each with populations of over five million, she says.

Strategies to get people to move to the country have had limited success. The only solution is to slow population growth significantly by cutting immigration, given natural increase is declining naturally at last.

I ask MPs to do the simple sums and answer this: Given the rate of population increase and the much lower rate of building housing, hospital and other infrastructure requirements, when if ever will al...

5 Hidden Dangers Around the Home "IndyWatch Feed National"

Every family deserves their home to be a safe haven. However, there are often hidden hazards hiding in plain sight. While some household hazards are obvious and next to impossible to miss, the real danger lurks in those less obvious hazards that so many of us overlook.

Today, well discuss 5 of the most common hidden dangers around the home, and what you can do to eliminate them. Lets begin.

Old Lead Paint

If your home was built before 1970, theres a very good chance that lead paint was used on your walls. Even if your home has been repainted, it could still be lurking a few coats deep. The recommended amount of lead in domestic paint has dropped from 50% in 1965 to 0.1% in 1997 due to toxicity, and is especially harmful to children, pregnant women and unborn babies.

While well-maintained lead paint thats in good condition doesnt pose any hazards, its if it begins to flake or chalk that the trouble begins. It can also be very hazardous when its on surfaces that are exposed to high amounts of friction, such as windows, doors or railings. People renovating their homes are in the most danger when it comes to lead exposure, so if you suspect your home has any traces of lead paint do not attempt to amend the issue yourself. Instead, hire professional painters who will know how to safely remove lead paint and replace it with a lead-free alternative.

Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring gas, and can often find its way into your home through cracks in your foundations, gaps surrounding your pipes or wall joints. While its found in all homes at some level, if the levels are too high then it can release radioactive particles and cause damage to the lung tissue.

Radon is tasteless, odourless and colourless, meaning that the only way to assess its levels is through a radon test kit. If you find that the levels in your home are too high for comfort, the best way to fix this is often through improving ventilation and sealing cracks found in your foundation.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

If youre buying new furniture, painting your walls or installing new carpet, chances are that these upgrades are bringing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into your home along with them. These VOCs, such as methylene, benzene, toluene and xylene, can release gas into the air that can cause headaches, cold-like symptoms and nausea in the short-term and cancer, liver and kidney damage and central nervous system damage in the long-term.

The best way to avoid harmful exposure to VOCs is to buy either VOC-free or low-VOC products, or ventilating any rooms where upgrades have been made for at least a w...

According to the current official version, the bank was created by Papal decree in 1942, an interesting enough choice, but even moreso since Jewish Holocaust survivors attempted to sue the bank in 1999, but were defeated by sovereign immunity.

The name was reconfigured to the Institute for Religious Works and running along the lines of any other Foundation it recently funded a statue of Moloch, potentially more than one.

This modern Vatican Bank seems to have been created not only for immediate World War II wealth-shifting circumstances but also to fulfil a need, to solidify all the centuries of swirling speculations into something concrete and of course sanitised, another bait and switch.

What of the past?

Out of the turmoil of the slowly decaying Roman Empire, with its cherished hegemony being eroded by silversmiths everywhere, its mercenaries becoming fickle and disloyal, its leadership losing its edge and sanity in equal measures, Emperor Constantine the Great (2...

Get to Know: Brisbanes Boundary-Pushing Producer LLKA "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Heres a good tip for listening to LLKA for the first time: dont fully try to understand whats going on, just give yourself wholeheartedly to her immersive world.

The Borneo-born, Brisbane-based producer and multi-instrumentalist released her debut mixtape, Romance + Rebellion, at the beginning of the month, and it almost defies description.

Effervescent glitch future club music, is the artists own attempt at summarising what she produces, and her sound morphs between hardcore trance, intricate hyperpop, delirious J-core, and gleeful Eurodance. Curious melodies, propelling beats, and entrancing vocals combine to thrilling effect.

Romance + Rebellion invites you in and wants you to want more from its world. The mixtape was born out of a precarious time in LLKAs life: a significant relationship faded away; she endured multiple hospitalisations; she eventually had to face diagnoses of fibromyalgia and autism.

Perhaps thats why the otherworldly songs on Romance +Rebellion are so future-facing theyre an escape from a fragile real-life existence just as much as they are an exploratory sonic endeavour.

The mixtape has been described by the producer as her attempt at finding solace in the digital space, and it also confirms her position as one of the most boundary-pushing electronic artists in Australia today, alongside the likes of Ninajirachi and daine.

As LLKA explains, Romance + Rebellion essentially conveys what its like to exist in her mind. The [mixtape] is hyperintense for me personally, and for many other neurodivergent people too, [my] brain is hyperactive, quick to think yet chaotic, and simply EXISTING in a neurotypical world on some days is too intense, she says.

A master of the art of broken pieces Jaguar Jonze on Mornings "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

I never really thought I wanted to be a musician. It was something that I just had to do.

Taiwanese-Australian musician Jaguar Jonze, real name Deena Lynch, makes many things from the shards of her life alongside music she is a visual artist (Spectator Jonze), a photographer (Dusky Jonze), and a (necessary) activist. Processing, reclaiming, creating; art as a technique for survival. Art as a way to put back together the broken pieces.

She spoke with Kana Frazer on Thursday Mornings about her new work The Art of Broken Pieces, a multimedia performance incorporating film, fashion, live music, visual art, and performance. The title is a direct reference to the centuries old Japanese art of kintsugi, the practice of mending and resealing broken ceramics with liquid gold or lacquer. Every crack and imperfection is commemorated as part of the objects unique history. For Deena, art and music is the way to put the broken pieces back together, to reinterpret and process.

That metaphor really resonates with me. Ive had a very turbulent life and to make meaning out of that turbulent life, Ive had to constantly choose to use the liquid gold and the lacquer to repair and celebrate all of the obstacles and tribulations and triumphs.

Deenas performance also includes the Japanese rope bondage art shibari, a physically challenging practice which she uses to pull herself into the presentness...

Whats Not Priced In #4: Extreme Greed, Aussie Mortgage Cliff, Neglected REITs "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Dear reader,

In 1996, legendary investor Philip A Fisher wrote in his classic book Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits and Other Writings that independence of thought was vital for outperformance:

This matter of training oneself not to go with the crowd but to be able to zig when the crowd zags, in my opinion, is one of the most important fundamentals of investment success.

Huge profits are frequently available to those who zig when most of the financial community is zagging, providing they have strong indications that they are right in their zigging.

Zigging when others are zagging is a crucial market skill.

Its also the principle driving Fat Tail Investment Researchs latest podcast featuring Greg Canavan Whats Not Priced In.

Its a podcast that reacts to every news story with, Yeah, yeahbut tell me whats not reflected in the consensus view.

The pod is already a running gag in the office.

Any time someone shares a news item, someone else will quip, Thats already in the price! Whats not priced in?

In its own little way, the podcast is having a cultural impact.

Narrow and greedy tech rally

Sometimes, to figure out whats not priced in, you must identify what already is.

With that in mind, this week Greg and I unpacked the latest Fed decision and surprising moves in the US stock market.

The benchmark S&P 500 is in a technical bull market, up by more than 20% since its October 2022 lows.

But thats largely due to a handful of mega-cap stocks like Apple Inc [NASDAQ:AAPL], Nvidia Corp [NASDAQ:NVDA], and Microsoft Corp [NASDAQ:MSFT].

S&p 500

Source: Financial Times

Apple alone is worth more than the entire Russell 2000 Index of smaller US companies!

This is all highly unusual.

I asked Greg if he was surprised by the moves of the US tech stocks, and he admitted its peculiar.

Especially when you consider the latest readings from CNNs Fear and Greed Index the gauge is screaming extreme greed, hitting its greediest level in a year.

Greg then...

Reserve Bank forsaking Australians' best interests "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Reserve Bank forsaking Australians' best interests

The Reserve Bank's pledge to ensure that monetary policy is being designed to the greatest advantage of the Australian people is not being met, writes John Kampert.

IN AUSTRALIA, our currency unit is the $AU because Section 8 of the Currency Act 1965 provides: (1) The monetary unit, or unit of currency, of Australia is the dollar.

That does not mean that all Australian dollars in general use are creations of the Government. In fact, only about 4 per cent of the general economys money are Commonwealth-created banknotes and coins, the bulk of the general economys money, the remaining 96 per cent, is digital commercial bank currency. And that is where the topic of politics, banking and interest rates gets very interesting.

Unfortunately for many, that is not of interest, a mystery not to be bothered with. Most people think that the Government creates all $AU, both the physical and the non-physical kind, and that is not correct.

The 1966 text, Tragedy and Hope A History of the World in Our Time by Carroll Quigley states: Bankers Create Money Out of Nothing. In that section of the book, the author explains the origins of the current money creation system and that ends with:

William Paterson, however, on obtaining the charter of the Bank of England in 1694, to use the moneys he had won in privateering, said, The Bank hath benefit of interest on all moneys which it creates out of nothing. This was repeated by Sir Edward Holden, founder of the Midland Bank, on December 18, 1907, and is, of course, generally admitted today.

Professor Quigley thus documented that any bank can and does create money from thin air and that this has been done and has been known for cen...

Today, AGL was making headlines with its latest on earnings guidance and business conditions while presenting for its Investor Day talking FY23 and FY24 earnings, profits and dividends.

The power touched on its overall business strategy, growth plan, operations and financial performance. However, perhaps the biggest highlight was the groups decision to upgrade and refine its earnings and profits guidance.

AGL has enhanced earnings guidance for FY2023 to a range of $1.3 billion1.375 billion, from $1.25 billion1.375 billion, as previously provided.

The groups underlying profit guidance was also revised to between $255 million285 million, from a previous forecast of $200 million280 million.

For fiscal 2024, AGL predicts between $1.875 billion2.175 billion in underlying earnings and between $580 million780 million in underlying profit after tax. This sudden upgrade is due to higher electricity prices and an increase in plant production.

AGL has now decided that it will be paying a dividend payout ratio of 5075% of underlying profit after tax to be completely franked instead of a payout ratio of 75%, as was its previous policy....

The Financial Times reviews The Palestine Laboratory "IndyWatch Feed National"

The Financial Times has reviewed my book, The Palestine Laboratory, and it feels like 7/10. Written by journalist Mehul Srivastava, I disagree with many of his criticisms but thats the life of an author.

Heres the intro:

Warfare is, among many things, a spectacular advertisement for weapons, especially in the age of television. Having watched Israels Iron Dome missiles streak over Tel Aviv hunting down Hamas rockets, the Ukrainian government contacted its Israeli counterpart last October, hoping to buy the air defence system to fend off the Iranian drones swarming their skies.

If theyd read Antony Loewensteins The Palestine Laboratory, they would have known not to bother. The tiny countrys weapons exports, which hit just over $11bn in 2021, are a means to an end, he argues. Despots and dictators are welcome to them, so long as they serve a geopolitical necessity.

Making its Australian premiere, Yvonne Todds The Stephanie Collection will feature compelling photographs and moving image, enticing curious audiences to look twice and explore their comfort levels and awkward feelings towards the works.

The New Zealand-based photographer is known for her unique and unconventional approach to portraiture and in 2019 Yvonne was a recipient of a Laureate Award from the Arts Foundation of New Zealand. Yvonnes unsettling images often feature characters in striking costumes in unnatural poses. Their unfathomable glossy complexions, and a hint of ghoulishness: wigs, fake teeth, and prosthetics are highly styled and manipulated.

More members to head to IRB titles "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club has received state government funding to help its athletes compete in the Australian Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) championships.

IRB athlete Orlagh Davison said the more than $2000 grant would allow 20 to 25 club athletes to attend New South Wales Kingscliff in July to participate in the championships.

Having the grant allows more of us to get there because it cuts the cost for all of us, she said.

Were hoping to use the grant towards our carnival fees because weve got such a big team.

The money will help pay for us to be able to compete as were quite young and a lot of us are still studying, so it was going to go towards entry fees and the carnival levy.

It might also go towards some sort of accommodation, but were pretty lucky in the fact that we can have the accommodation at a smaller price due to being such a big team.

Ms Davison said the championships were a good opportunity for the team to be together and see how everyones skills had progressed.

Thats when we all suddenly shock ourselves and the best of the best of us come out, she said.

We impress ourselves by making it through rounds, making it to the finals and sometimes some of us even have the opportunity to win medals.

Ms Davison said the grant made the IRB team feel appreciated and was thankful for the chance to show off their skills.

It helps us stay within the surf club and refines our skills for when we do need to do actual rescues, as this is why we do the sport, she said.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said he was proud to provide local sporting groups with the opportunity to showcase their skills through government funding.

Our up-and-coming athletes and future champions are putting in the hard work, he said.

Thats why we are helping them realise their sporting dreams by removing barriers associated with travel and accommodation costs.

Biden: Your Children Belong to the Government "IndyWatch Feed National"

President Joe Biden admitted the truth the government is claiming your children as their own.

Speaking on his favorite topic, the LGBTQ community, Biden addressed the nation in a disturbing video posted on Twitter that states:

To the LGBTQI+ Community the Biden-Harris Administration has your back. These are our kids. These are our neighbors. Not somebody elses kids; theyre all our kids. And our children are the kite strings that hold our national ambitions aloft. It matters a great deal how we treat everyone in this country. LGBTQ Americans, especially children, you are loved, you are heard, and this administration has your back.

Hillary Clinton has a famous line that says it takes a village to raise children, and everyone cheered, thinking she meant having a strong community. Now, the Democrats are taking it further than any leader would go other than perhaps Kim Jung-Un. Well, I am not sure that he would even permit childhood castration. The American public schools want to indoctrinate your children from an early age. This is why they are refusing to listen to the parents who are pleading with teachers not to teach their kindergarteners about pronouns and sex. The government under Biden is passing laws permitting children to make life-altering decisions without their parents consent. In fact, they are working to punish parents who do not cave to the woke agenda. The government is taking away parental rights entirely.

They are not your kids, Gov. Ron DeSantis tweeted in reply. You are the government. They are NOT your kids, Elon Musk tweeted in a message that now has over 416K likes. This should concern everyone. Bidens message was specifically targeting troubled youth. Feel misunderstood by your parents after years of education indoctrination? Turn to the government to be your family.

Heres What Sharyl Attkisson Told Me About the 2009 Pandemic "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

April 16, 2020 [America in lockdown: Day 34.]

The CDC would never launch a fake epidemic; certainly not

And meet our old friend, Dr. Anthony Fauci, in another context

History matters.

So I take you back to the summer of 2009, when the CDC and the World Health Organization were hyping the deadly H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic.

They were, of course, also urging people to take the new Swine Flu vaccine. On that subject, here is an excerpt from Robert Kennedy Jr.s Childrens Health Defense (3/27/20):

For example, [Dr. Anthony] Fauci once shilled for the fast-tracked H1N1 influenza (swine flu) vaccine on YouTube, reassuring viewers in 2009 that serious adverse events were very, very, very rare. Shortly thereafter, the vaccine went on to wreak havoc in multiple countries, increasing miscarriage risks in pregnant women in the U.S., provoking a spike in adolescent narcolepsy in Scandinavia and causing febrile convulsions in one in every 110 vaccinated children in Australiaprompting the latter to suspend its influenza vaccination program in under-fives.

Thank you. Dr. Fauci. Explain to us why you havent been downgraded to pumping gas in Death Valley or sent to prison?

Back to the Swine Flu pandemic. In the summer of 2009, the CDC was claiming there were thousands of cases in the US. But behind these statistics lay an unnerving secret. A crime, considering the CDCs mandate to report the truth to the American people:

Secretly, the CDC had stopped counting cases of Swine Flu.

What? Why?

CBS investigative reporter, Sharyl Attkisson, discovered the CDC secret; and she found out why.

The routine testing of tissue samples from the most likely Swine Flu patients was coming back, in the overwhelming percentage of cases, with: NO SIGN OF SWINE FLU OR ANY OTHER KIND OF FLU.

Attkisson wrote an article about this scandal, and it was published on the CBS News website. However, the next, bigger stepputting out the story on CBS television newswas waylaid. No deal. And CBS shut down any future investigation on the subject. Attkissons article died on the vine. No other major news outlet in the world picked up her article and ran with it deeper into the rabbit hole.

Here is what Attkisson told me when I interviewed her:

Rappoport: In 2009, you spearheaded coverage of the so-called Swine Flu pandemic. You discovered that, in the summer of 2009, the Centers for Disease Control, ignoring their federal mandate, [secretly] stopped counting Swine Flu cases in America. Yet they continued to stir up fear about the pandemic, without having any real measure of its impact. Wasnt that another investigation of yours that was shut down? Wasnt there more to find out?

Attkisson: The implications of the story were even worse than that. We discovered through our FOI efforts that before the CDC mysteriously stopped counting Swine Flu cases, they had learned that a...

Dumplings cop blame for sins of the Russians "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Dumplings cop blame for sins of the Russians

While many are quick to blame Russia for its aggression against Ukraine, taking it out on international cuisine is lapsing into the moronic, writes Dr Binoy Kampmark.

THE UKRAINIAN blonde had the smell of trouble. She had perched herself, along with her mute friend, in a restaurant across from the famed South Melbourne Market. On arriving at the modish, glorious bit of real estate known as Tipsy Village, a Polish establishment famed for accented French cuisine, she shrieked: Why do you have Ruskie dumplings on your menu?

The Polish host, a man of butter-mild manner and infinite tolerance, covered in stout glory, took it in his stride. That is what they are called where I come from and that is what we serve, Peter Barnatt stated with serene clarity. (Such wickedness! Such a radical disposition!) The shrieking blonde wonder continued to invest in the dumplings some Satanic quality, as if each one had been a shell, soldier, a weapon massed and launched against her pristine homeland which she had, it seemed, abandoned.

We would just like coffees, she demanded. His temper finally disturbed, the host insisted that, as the two were not intent on dining, might just as well leave.

In a luxurious huff, they exited. Such behaviour was fascinating for being irresolvable  no dining establishment worth its salt and cutlery should ever change that aspect of things. But for them, the issue had been decided, a prejudice firmed up and solid.

Names on the menu are a signature of a restaurants worth. Besides, dishes do not invade countries in tanks or bomb cities. The episode was also strikingly, amusingly moronic. Food had been made out as somehow guilty, disgusting, revolting all because of a name, an identity. The sin had moved in the dough, the mixture and the potatoes, dumplings with agency. The restaurateur was all the more guilty for hosting them.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the gastro-culture war on serving dishes with a Russian name, be it with hint, flavour or substance, has been total. Hatred of the Kremlin has become bigotry towards the dish. In Madrid,...

Library fund to and fro "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Bellarine MP Alison Marchant has accused the City of Greater Geelong for being ready for a photo opportunity at the opening of the Boronggook Drysdale Library when it knew it would not be able to fund its operational costs.

The new library was opened on May 5 just days after the City announced its 2023-24 budget, which exposed a shortfall in operational funding of the regions libraries.

Barwon Heads, Geelong West and Highton libraries were facing closure due to a lack of funding, but still may operate on reduced hours, including Boronggook Drysdale.

The moves have angered residents who have organised rallies and bombarded council with letters, petitions and in-person meetings in protest of the changes.

At the Boronggook Drysdale Library official opening on May 5, Ms Marchant spoke of the state governments $1 million contribution to building the library.

In my address at the official opening of the Boronggook Drysdale Library, I expressed the importance of libraries, its social impacts and significance of its addition to residents of the north Bellarine region, she said.

Stating we recognise that libraries enrich local communities by supporting a culture that values reading, learning and social connection.

It is incredibly disappointing that CoGG were ready for the photo opportunity but not prepared to fund the Boronggook Drysdale Librarys operational costs.

I congratulate the community for their continued advocacy. They have been diligent, passionate and extremely proficient in their arguments for change.

I proudly stand with the community and support their calls for the council to do better. I believe the community feels swindled, when the council were happy to grandstand at its official opening knowing full well that they would not be funding its ongoing operation adequately.

It is now time for the council to do the right thing. I respectfully ask the council to fund the GRLC fully and appropriately.

Mayor Trent Sullivan said council was hoping to secure extra funding from the state government for next years budget.

We will be having a conversation with the government over the next year in the hope of securing additional state funding to support our libraries in time for next years budget, he said.

We would appreciate Ms Marchants support to achieve this.

Reflecting the value we place in libraries, we contributed $8.156 million towards the build of the Boronggook Drysdale Library, alongside the governments $1 million.

Our proposed budget for next year includes $13.948 million towards our regions libraries, which represents a greater investment per resident than almost every other Council in Victoria.

Neither we nor the community have been told at this point what the state governments contribution to our libraries will be in 2023-24. This is a major concern considering our proposed allocation has been unde...

Budding chefs get to work "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Surfside Primary Schools 75 grade six students put their Master Chef hats on this week.

Part of the Ocean Grove schools kitchen garden program, the Master Chef competition is a culmination of four years of work by the students, who start learning about food and cooking in grade three.

The students start learning in grade three and it all culminates in a Master Chef day that finishes off their primary school culinary tuition.

This years theme was Australian Indigenous ingredients and students prepared dishes such as Torres Strait Island fried scones, warrigal greens and saltbush risotto, anise myrtle damper and savoury muffins with a lemon myrtle butter.

Kitchen specialist Fleur Kilpatrick said while it was sad that the students had finished their culinary tuition at the school, the initiative had given them life skills.

They love it, she said.

They gain culinary skills, but they work in teams and each have a go at being the leader.

They learn teamwork and problem solving and just appreciate a lot of different flavours. We do lots of multicultural baking and cooking.

The judging panel, which included principal Peter Walsh, were impressed with the students dishes.

Migration mystique and push-pull factors in the US and further afield "IndyWatch Feed National"

Recently the right-wing governor of Texas, who just happens to be named Abbott, announced that the state will install a barrier made of buoys along a section of the Rio Grande to deter migrants from entering the US.  As is so often the case his measures, which also included a commitment to spend $5.1b on other border security measures, was met with howls of indignation by immigration advocates who argued that this deprives migrants of the right to seek asylum from persecution.    Those supporting the measure pointed out that the river crossing was dangerous with many drowning in the attempt and up to 30 bodies being recovered every month.

Conflicting ideas on migration but little debate on why we have a worldwide refugee crisis

Much the same conflict of ideas is occurring all around the world including Australia but far more so in Europe where the number of migrants from Africa and the middle east reached over 6000 in January this year double that of the same period in 2022, not to mention approximately 8.2 million Ukrainians.     There has been much debate on why migration should be restricted with counter-arguments as to why borders should be open to all, but very little examination as to why we have a worldwide refugee crisis.     It is of course a complex issue with many factors which unfortunately still allows some to be selective and put the blame on capitalism, socialism, totalitarianism,  religion, tribalism, racism or whatever they happen to dislike.

However the problem in the US is largely self-inflicted and has its origins in policies and actions that are a little easier to dissect since most of those attempting "illegal" entry are their neighbors from the south.     In no particular order of importance the causes of the refugee crisis in South America could be  distilled down to;

Illegal drug empire

a) The US population has an illegal drug habit that is large enough to fund a huge criminal network that smuggles drugs into the US by the ton.  They have armies that have waged wars against any one who opposed them, stolen land and destroyed or corrupted governments.  One such cartel - Clan del Golfo became not only the producer and smuggler of cocaine but ran extortion rackets illegal mining and arms smuggling ( guns obtained from the US with drug profits )  They carried out attacks on government officials as well as kidnappings, torture and assassinations of opponents, all of which made life extremely difficult for locals.    The head of the organization, Otoniel when arrested admitted t...

The Winding Way is a testament to The Teskey Brothers artistic evolution and their most adventurous record to date "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

The Teskey Brothers were always going to take out this issues feature album. How could they not? Theres just something so monumental about them that makes each new release that they bring out to feel like youre witnessing history unfold in front of you. Its as if every album in their catalogue is destined to go on to become timeless Australian treasures in the years following their release.

Their first two albums  Half Mile Harvest (2017), and the Grammy-nominated Run Home Slow (2019)  already have, with the Warrandyte-raised brothers finding stardom as R&B/Soul megastars both at home and away before taking some time to step away and focus on side projects.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

So naturally, the news that the brothers were planning on returning for album number three sent most fans into an absolute frenzy, however, the coinciding announcements that it would be recorded amid a new lineup, and with acclaimed dance music producer Eric J Dubowsky (Flume, Chet Faker, Chemical Brothers) were met with trepidation by a handful of online commenters fearful that the group were drastically changing up their sound.

And while those commenters were right the group have changed it up theyve done so in the best ways possible, with Dubowskys subtle touch helping The Teskey Brothers to deliver their most stunning, yet adventurous album to date. Fuller in tone and less formulaic in approach, The Winding Way sees The Teskey Brothers dive head-first into a wealth of rich textures and instruments previously unexplored by the group while maintaining the integrity, power and levity of their first two releases.

Opener Im Leaving is one for the purists, keeping its cards close to its chest with classic Teskey Brothers sensibilities Joshs voice is as powerful as ever, as is Sams minute yet deliberate strums. Itl...

Naomi Klein on the indispensable Palestine Laboratory "IndyWatch Feed National"

Writer and author Naomi Klein has written a new column in the Guardian about the US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr where she methodically debunks his populist appeal.

Im grateful for her mention, when discussing Kennedys blind embrace of Israel, of my new book:

Myth #3: He is anti-war and pro-human rights.

Kennedy is most persuasive when opposing US military intervention abroad, or when he is discussing the humanitarian cost of the war in Ukraine, and calling for a peaceful settlement. But how seriously should we take his pacifism and human rights concerns? One hint rests in the blanket supporthe offers the Israeli government, one of the top recipients of aid from the US military industrial complex he decries, and a nation consistently unwilling to entertain peace with justice, while escalating tensions with Iran. Have a look at Antony Loewensteins latest, The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World, for an indispensable accounting.

This position alone should cause Kennedys supporters to question his supposedly antiwar, anti-surveillance stance. So should his increasingly reactionary position on border controls. Kennedy talks a good game condemning the US for overthrowing democratically elected governments abroad and destabilizing entire regions.

My part in Elon Musks horrifying and tragic Everest catastrophe (Chapter Three)

Chapter 3

Heseltina and the News Limited Yeti

Read Chapter One: The Infiltration
Read Chapter Two: Elon Musk and Keith the saucy, Reuters fake llama

THE STORY SO FAR

It is 1994. A bright-eyed and ineffably heroic David Donovan has, as a rookie freelance journalist, managed to infiltrate a vast and bizarre Elon Musk expedition to scale Mount Everest. To do this, he has successively adopted various cunning disguises, including a garrulous one-eyed sherpa called Murray, and Bonny the amiable and reliable pack mule. On the way, he has gotten rather too close to Musk and befriended a statuesque fake llama called Keith, from Reuters.

We pick up this gripping tale as the exhausted Musk caravanserai, 14 days out of Kathmandu and much diminished now by natural and, for the most part, unnatural attrition at last sights Base Camp One, its first objective on its epic quest to reach the Roof of the World.

IT WAS ONLY on the 14th day of the trek though I recall it seemed so much longer that we at last cast our weary eyes upon Base Camp One, below us on an unlikely plain, with Everest looming gargantuan and vaguely threatening behind it.

Elon Musk, by this time, had, according to his PA/nanny, taken to spending the early part of the day reciting Mother Goose songs he apparently recalled from his childhood in Upper Right White Transvaal. As few of us in the party were familiar with Musks guttural native tongue, Afrikaans, we were all obliged to take that under advisement.

It had been a long and tortuous 14-day trek since last we set our eyes upon Kathmandu. It would take a book perhaps several weighty tomes, indeed to properly describe the many adventures and even more frequent misadventures we suffered during that perilous and demanding slog into the Himalayas. Let me merely fill you in...

Be Your Man is a love song I wrote about me and my partner, they explained at the time. Growing up watching fairytale movies, I didnt fit the typical prince or princess character. As the world has progressed and Ive grown up, Ive learned that a lot of love stories dont look like the stories in movies.

Be Your Man followed last years Waste Of Space, which reached number 96 on triples Hottest 100. G Flip also memorably performed at the inaugural Sydney WorldPride earlier this year.

Portarlington opposes building development "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

A community group continues to fight against a potential development in Portarlington ahead of a VCAT case conference in June.

The City of Greater Geelongs Planning Committee opposed the permit application by 49 Newcombe Street Pty Ltd during its May 31 meeting, with the developer now taking the case to VCAT.

VCAT will hold a compulsory conference on the developers application for a proposed five-story building at 49 Newcombe Street on June 23 and a case hearing from August 30 to September 3.

The building site is close to 940.7 metres-squared and would include ten apartments with two retail shops.

Portarlington Community Association president Geoff Fary said community members were still unhappy with the proposed development despite changing the design and application.

This has been a long running and controversial issue in our little coastal town, he said.

Theres been some alterations to the design, but its still basically a five-level apartment block, which would, in the view of many, block out the vistas from the main street to the bay.

Mr Fary said the associations main objection to the development was the height and bulk of the building, which would affect the north facing views from the main street down to the bay.

He also said the community wasnt opposed to development and growth and would like to compromise with the developer.

There needs to be an acceptable alternative arrived at that meets the communitys expectations, but that doesnt see the landowner out of pocket either, he said.

We would really like for all parties to come to an arrangement whereby that land could return to public ownership and the developer would be appropriately compensated.

Spiire Property and Infrastructure Consultants senior associate Roger Munn spoke on behalf of the 49 Newcombe Street application during the May Planning Committee meeting.

Mr Munn said the application had undergone significant redesigns and consultations.

We acknowledge the uniqueness of this site and the sensitive coastal interface, he said.

The Planning Committee accepted that the loss of the current clear view to the bay is a reasonable expectation for the redevelopment of this commercial land within the towns centre.

Getting Accommodation In Cairns Under Working Holiday Visa? "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Hello people of Cairns!

I am hoping that you could provide me with some insights/guidance to a few concerns of mine.

Im a Canadian who in a few months is planning to move to Australia for a working holiday visa. I spent quite a bit of time looking around and researching places around the country and I think Cairns would be a really incredible place to try to live in. I'm excited by how absurdly different it is from where Im coming from, especially in terms of climate haha. Im sure it will be a challenge in many ways, but Im willing to give it a go!

That being said, I guess my biggest concern would be my accommodation in Cairns.

Because I will be completely new to Australia, I will have no rental history here and as well as no job or income that I can show right away. How big of an issue is this for me in Cairns in particular?

Reading some previous posts, it seems like you guys are having a rental/housing issue. This makes me really concerned that Ill be arriving there and have no options/no one will accept me given my condition.

When I got my first rental apartment here at home, even though I had limited work or rental experience, my parents were able to be my guarantors. As such, I really had no issues finding a place to live. Since then Ive had years worth of rental history, but Im assuming this would be irrelevant in Australiaif not please let me know. I also dont know if I would be able to place my parents as guarantors this time around when they arent even in the country or even have an Australian bank account. Im doubtful, but would this be possible?

So basically how dire is my situation? Would you suggest I AirBNB for the first few weeks? Beyond that, are flat mates my only realistic long term option? If it is even possible, what steps do I need to take if I am completely set on renting out my own place?

Just for more info, I would say $350/week would be around the max of what I would be okay with.

And to end things off, as a final general question, do you guys think Im making the right decision? Maybe Im being too nave to how things are over there. Is Cairns a good place for someone wishing to pursue a WHV?

Thanks and looking forward to any help! And if I do end up coming, Im sure Ill be posting many more questions and comments in this subreddit in the future

Adalita, Mick Harvey and Andrew Duffield reimagine Michael Hutchences classic Rooms for the Memory "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

The trio has reworked the classic Rooms for the Memory, originally composed by Olsen in 1978 and later popularised by Michael Hutchence, the frontman of INXS, in 1987.

The song featured in the cult Australian film Dogs in Space, directed by Richard Lowenstein, holds a special place in the hearts of many. To honour Olsen and support him during his battle with Multiple System Atrophy (a form of Parkinsons), Adalita, Melbournes Sing Sing Studios in January of this year.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Renowned producer Nick Launay, who mixed the original and this new version, also participated in the project. Filmmaker Richard Lowenstein, who directed the original Rooms video, captured the entire recording session, interweaving footage of Hutchence and Olsen from the past with the modern-day clip. The video is set for a digital release today June 16.

The extended format of Rooms for the Memory 2023 will be released this weekend, on July 14, through DRW Records. This release will Space and a reworked rendition by Kav Temperley, the frontman of Eskimo Joe.

Its just a hauntingly brilliant and beautifully written song and when myself and a few of Ollies friends heard he was not well, we felt we needed to do something to help, said Jane Gazzo, the songs executive producer. Remarkably all the musicians, including Adalita and Mick Harvey two of the countrys finest artists were completely up to donating their time and had belief in the project. I think this is a stunning rework and I really hope the music industry and public get behind it and give it the new lease of life we know it deserves.

All proceeds from the sales of the vinyl, CD, and digital versions of the song will directly contribute to assisting Ollie Olsen and his ongoing medical care. Olsen, a prominent figure in electronic and avant-garde music in Australia, has been diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, a degenerative condition for which there is currently no cure. The Australian music industry has rallied behind Olsen, raising over $20,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to date.

Rooms for the Memory 2023 stands as a testament to the power of music and the collective support of the music community. It is an opportunity for music lovers to contribute to a worthy cause while experiencing a hauntingly brilliant and beautifully written song in a renewed form.

Is the World Dirtier Than We Thought? "IndyWatch Feed National"

What Is Our Relationship With "Dirt"?

Big surprise (or not)! Dirt is everywhere! We assume that we in the West are living "clean" lives but if you look at the air on a sunny day in New York where I am you will see an extremely dense cloud of dust!

Seeing that, if we then got motivated enough to analyze what is going into our lungs as we go about our day "on the town," wed probably faint. What are those dust particles made of? Bits from garbage dumps? Car tires and wall paint? Other pedestrians hair and skin? Microplastics from masks? Geoengineering sprays?

Whatever the composition, we are breathing it all in and amazingly, we just keep walking like Energizer bunnies. Personally, I consider it a major compliment to how resilient and beautiful our bodies are!

By the way, just in case, let me make it clear: the dramatic description of dust was not an advertisement for smart masks, lol although I imagine that soon enough the WEF crowd will use the fact of tremendous air pollution as a "reason" to try and dress us all up in smart cattlewear. And why wouldnt they? They quite love cattlewear on peasants, so ...

Back to dust. It turns out that dust has some pretty "interesting" stuff in it. According to a 2009 report by NPR, to this day, some dust contains DDT, despite the chemical being banned decades ago. And according to this 2021 Conversation article, some dust is natural, coming from rocks, soils and even space. At the same time, the DustSafe program in Australia, for example, revealed that house dust could contain substances like these:

As they say, sometimes, innocence is bliss .....

How Electromagnetic Fields Damage Your Health "IndyWatch Feed National"

Editor's Note: This article is a reprint. It was originally published April 29, 2018.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have been shown to cause biological damage and even cancer, but exactly how does this happen? In this interview, Paul Hroux, Ph.D., a researcher and professor of toxicology and health effects of electromagnetism at the faculty of medicine at McGill University in Montreal, helps answer that question.

Originally trained as a physicist, he eventually ended up studying electrical power transmission lines, the topic of his Ph.D., and in the course of working for a power utility, he started investigating the health effects associated with the fields emitted from power lines.

"I got involved in biology, followed courses in medicine and became, so to speak, a different person from what my supervisors initially would have expected me to be," he says. In time, he became a specialist on the effects of magnetic fields on the human body, and joined the Faculty of Medicine to help protect health and the environment.

Types of EMFs

Broadly speaking, EMFs include electric, magnetic and radio frequency fields. While the literature tends to discriminate between low-frequency fields, high-frequency fields, microwaves, electric fields and magnetic fields, all of these have certain commonalities that allow you to lump them together, at least in terms of their biological action.

"It's true that frequency influences the effects," Hroux says, "but basically I could, using an electric field or a magnetic field, produce the same effect in a cell. Most higher frequency signals have enough low-frequency components to have a lot in common with low-frequency components.

The practical aspect of this is that usually the fields have an effect maybe in one application, but they are mirrored in other applications as well. There's a type of great unifying view that you can have about these fields."

Nonthermal Effects Matter

It's important to realize that the damage EMFs cause has nothing to do with thermal effects. At typical exposures, EMFs do not create heat, which has been the telecommunication industry's main defense and argument for the safety of cellphone radiation. However, hundreds of researchers have in fact noted biological effects both at low and high frequencies.

"Covering the whole spectrum, there is no doubt that there are biological effects," Hroux says, adding "There's no doubt there are substantial health effects that we have been experiencing for a long time, and that have been increasing our health bills.

Consumer spending falls off a cliff "IndyWatch Feed Economics.au"

Spending crashes as rate hikes bite

ANZ reported that shopping, travel, and dining expenditure in Australia have all dropped off a cliff.

Spending in the economy has passed the tipping point now, with grocery spend stalling and all other sectors falling deeply into negative territory.

Source: ANZ

This mirrors what a number of retailers have been protesting of late, that consumers are shutting their wallets at an alarming rate of knots.

It also suggests that growth in the economy for the June quarter could be flat or even negative as domestic demand slows (although monster population growth makes a shrinking economy mathematically a tough hurdle).

Overnight, US initial jobless claims were reported to have jumped to 262,000, suggesting that the labor market Stateside has also finally cracked.

Two chances inquiry into Murdoch media will float: Fat and slim "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Two chances inquiry into Murdoch media will float: Fat and slim

Last week, the Greens introduced a Bill to the Senate to establish a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the Murdoch media empire. While many people will want to support such a move, Dr Martin Hirst says hes not convinced yet.

FOR SOME TIME, Ive been sceptical of calls for a royal commission into the Murdoch media despite efforts by former PM Kevin Rudd  and now Malcolm Turnbull  to get one established.

Theres always a danger of governmental overreach when it comes to press regulation and legal sanction. I would not be in favour of governments establishing too much legal control over news content. However, now that the Greens have tabled legislation, its time for a sober assessment of any proposed commission of inquiry.

Nothing is going to happen quickly. The legislation, the Murdoch Media Inquiry Bill 2023, has already been shunted off to a Senate committee thats not due to report until October. So we have time to digest the information and consider the implications of such a commission. But first, a short digression.

Giant saltworks proposal threatens WA marine park "IndyWatch Feed National"

Contributed from Victoria

German industrial company K+S has submitted a proposal to build a saltworks in the Exmouth Gulf in Western Australia. Reaction from conservationists opposed to the 2,600 square kilometre project by the worlds largest salt company has been swift. The plan is to produce 4.7 million tonnes of salt per year in the nationally listed wetland, one of the last undisturbed arid-zone wetland ecosystems along the coast.

Salt ponds walls will be built over the nationally listed wetlands, which could disrupt the ecosystems nutrient flows via tidal or flood waters into the gulf and disrupt the marine food chain.

Photo by Andre Rerekura: Urala Creek at the top of the Exmouth Gulf will be part of the development footprint

The proposal has bee submitted to the environment Protection Authority (EPA). Almost 15 years ago, the EPA rejected a similar project, because the evidence suggested the environmental harm could be serious. This time the company has enlisted the support of dome local business interests and managed to get an agreement from some local First Nations people, and the outcome is not certain.

Opponents say the K+S plan will risk the discharge of toxic hypersaline water from the salt ponds, which will kill highly sensitive mangroves and harm marine animals, such as critically endangered sawfish and shovelnose rays living in the nearby creeks and marine waters.

Rejection of the earlier project resulted in a set of recommendations. They led the McGowen government to introduce protective measures for the region, which included the establishment of a new marine park for the eastern and southern parts of the Gulf, and A status for areas of significance. This was a recognition of the need to protect the Exmouth Gulf. The K+S proposal flies in the face of this.

Local conservation group Protect Ningaloo wants to see the project stopped. Its director, Paul Gamblin, said it poses too many risks to the local environment.

In which the pond averts eyes from reptile hypocrisy to take in Henry versus the machines, and a dash of roving Rove ... "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

If the pond remembers correctly from the days being dragged down to Tamworth's number one oval kicking and screaming, the technical term is being "sold a dump."

Some dropkick throws the ball to you, and you get your head taken off with a stiff arm or a coat hanger or whatever, or some boofhead thug with no neck creams you. Memory fades as to the pond's recollections and sometimes that's a relief.

Never mind, here's how the technical term applies in politics:

You see? Yesterday simpleton Simon (no conflict there) had the complete cheek to turn moralist and mutter "this should serve as a lesson in the perils of politicising sexual assault allegations."

Even worse, it was Liberals get burnt after turning up the Higgins' heat.

The reptiles had been politicising sexual assault allegations for weeks, neigh months, and poor old Captain Potato took the bait, marched in step to reptile orders, and thought he was on a winner... but thus far all it's won him is a lost senator, and the realisation that the reptiles have "sold him a dump" ...

Two crocs mostly comforting but three's bit of a crowd "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Third crocodile seen lately in the Town Common Conservation Park cause for bit of a rethink. Above all it shatters presumption that there was just the one biggish Saltie moving through several lagoon viewing areas. Now ... who knows how many - and exactly where? Last year's consistently high water levels, continuing through 2023 so far may have encouraged crocs, big fish and turtles to stick around. The conditions have also been perfect for expansive growth of bulrushes and reeds, thus creating extra cover in the lagoons. This all may change if the forecast but uncertain El Nino arrives this year rather than next. As always, we must wait and see. Stepping carefully meantime.

Cars Suck: Desert edition (or should I say, desertification) "IndyWatch Feed National"

And people suck, too.  Something I was reminded of today, disaster from 1973:

Last Tree of Tnr

The Tnr wastelands of northeastern Niger were once populated by a forest of trees. By the 20th century, desertification had wiped out all but one solitary acacia.

The Tree of Tnr, as it came to be called, had no companions for 400 kilometers in every direction. Its roots reached nearly 40 meters deep into the sand.

The tree had become a sacred object among the nomadic Tuareg people that would pass by it on their journeys, never using it for firewood, or allowing their camels to graze on it. As more desert explorers came across the shockingly hardy plant, it became quite well known and was even included as a landmark on European military maps of the otherwise desolate expanse during the 1930s. When Michel Lesourd of the Central Service of Saharan Affairs first came upon the tree in 1939, he wrote:

One must see the Tree to believe its existence. What is its secret? How can it still be living in spite of the multitudes of camels which trample at its sides? How at each azalai does not a lost camel eat its leaves and thorns? Why dont the numerous Touareg leading the salt caravans cut its branches to make fires to brew their tea? The only answer is that the tree is taboo and considered as such by the caravaniers. There is a kind of superstition, a tribal order which is always respected. Each year the azalai gather round the Tree before facing the crossing of the Tnr. The Acacia has become a living lighthouse; it is the first or the last landmark for the azalai leaving Agadez for Bilma, or returning.

The Most Isolated Tree in the World Was Killed by a (Probably Drunk) Driver

For around 300 years, the Tree of Tnr was fabled to be the most isolated tree on the planet. The acacia was the only tree for 250 miles in Nigers Sahara desert, and was used as a landmark by travelers and caravans passing through the hostile terrain. The tree sprouted when the desert was a slightly more hospitable place, and for years was the sole testament to a once-greener Sahara.

In the 1930s, the tree was featured on official maps for European military campaigners, and a French ethnologist Henri Lhote called it, an Acacia with a degenerative trunk, sick or ill in aspect. But he noted, as well, that nevertheless, the tree has nice green leaves, and some yellow...

Several reef sharks at greater threat of extinction than thought, study shows "IndyWatch Feed Enviro.au"

New research has found that five key shark species found in reef habitats are at higher risk of extinction than previously thought, mainly due to overfishing. Published in Science, the study indicates that gray reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus), whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) declined by 60-73% across the world. As these sharks have disappeared from reefs, rays have begun to take over, except in places where both sharks and rays are being depleted, according to the study. This research builds upon a 2020 study in Nature that found that sharks were functionally extinct from about 20% of the worlds coral reefs. That [Nature] study basically grouped all of the sharks that occur on coral reefs together in one group and looked at what was going on, Colin Simpfendorfer, lead author of the new study and adjunct professor of marine and aquaculture science at James Cook University in Australia, told Mongabay. Suspended for Providing Balanced News on Ukraine "IndyWatch Feed National"

By Tony Kevin | Consortium News | June 13, 2023

Canberra On Friday The Guardian Australia website carried a news report, with a follow-up piece on Monday, whose implications for free speech are profoundly disturbing.

They concern a Radio New Zealand, or RNZ, broadcasting employee unnamed, but everyone in the small New Zealand broadcasting world will soon know who it is who has been placed on leave while their professional conduct is investigated.  Obviously, a career hangs in the balance.

The malign ghosts of Orwells 1984 stalk this story.

Russian Garbage

This unnamed person in RNZ committed the cardinal sin of inappropriate editing of incoming Reuters news feeds on the war in Ukraine to insert Russian garbage in the contemptuous words of Paul Thompson, chief executive of RNZ. That is to say, they drew on Russian news sources to insert balancing pro-Russian material to the incoming Western news agency feeds.

The Guardian tells us that in fact accurate information about Ukraine was added to the Reuters copy:

The articles in question made a range of amendments: adding the word coup to describe the Maidan revolution; changing a description of Ukraines former pro-Russian president to read pro-Russian elected government; adding references to a pro-western government that had suppressed ethnic Russians; and on several occasions adding references to Russian concerns about neo-Nazi elements in Ukraine.

And more truth was added to the story, The Guardian says:

In one article, a paragraph was added reading: The Kremlin also said its invasion was sparked by a failure to implement the Minsk agreement peace accords, designed to give Russia speakers autonomy and protection, and the rise of a neo-Nazi element in Ukraine since a coup ousted a Russian-friendly Ukrainian government in 2014.

Another added that Russia launched its invasion claiming that a US-backed coup in 2014 with the help of neo-Nazis had created a threat to its borders and had ignited a civil war that saw Russian-speaking minorities persecuted.

This, it seems, is an offence not...
