The link between the sea sponge loss and climate change "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

Recent studies from ISME Communications reveal that the rise of sea temperatures are causing sea sponges to lose important microbes that lead to necrotic sponges.

Sea sponges play a crucial role in the coral reef ecosystem; they detoxify, collect bacteria and process chalcogens. Some species of sea sponges have even been wiped out in certain areas due to climate change impacting the sea temperatures, thus affecting certain species and climates of certain countries.

Two internationally acclaimed photographic artists, Yvonne Todd and Erik Johansson, are set to headline the 2023 Ballarat International Foto Biennale when it makes its grand return this August.

Returning for its 10th year, the bi-annual Foto Biennale will once again turn the regional Victorian city of Ballarat into a temporary cultural archive, boasting an artefact repository of global significance. From galleries to laneways, city streets to businesses, and historic buildings, the Biennale will showcase the works of both international and Australian photographers, offering a unique perspective on the world we live in.

Keep up with the latest in regional art and local events here.

Joining previously announced headline exhibition People Power Platon, a comprehensive exhibition of photographer Platons portraits, the immersive, world-class event has added two mesmerising headline exhibitions featuring the work of internationally renowned photographic artists Yvonne Todd (New Zealand) and Erik Johansson (Sweden).

Making its Australian premiere, Yvonne Todds The Stephanie Collection will feature compelling photographs and moving image, enticing curious audiences to look twice and explore their comfort levels and awkward feelings towards the works.

The New Zealand-based photographer is known for her unique and unconventional approach to portraiture and in 2019 Yvonne was a recipient of a Laureate Award from the Arts Foundation of New Zealand. Yvonnes work challenges photographic cliches by manipulating traditional photographic styles to create unexpected and provocative relationships.

Yvonnes unsettling images often feature characters in striking costumes in unnatural poses. Their unfathomable glossy complexions, and a hint of ghoulishness: wigs, fake teeth, and prosthetics are highly styled and manipulated.

The Winding Way is a testament to The Teskey Brothers artistic evolution and their most adventurous record to date "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

The Teskey Brothers were always going to take out this issues feature album. How could they not? Theres just something so monumental about them that makes each new release that they bring out to feel like youre witnessing history unfold in front of you. Its as if every album in their catalogue is destined to go on to become timeless Australian treasures in the years following their release.

Their first two albums  Half Mile Harvest (2017), and the Grammy-nominated Run Home Slow (2019)  already have, with the Warrandyte-raised brothers finding stardom as R&B/Soul megastars both at home and away before taking some time to step away and focus on side projects.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

So naturally, the news that the brothers were planning on returning for album number three sent most fans into an absolute frenzy, however, the coinciding announcements that it would be recorded amid a new lineup, and with acclaimed dance music producer Eric J Dubowsky (Flume, Chet Faker, Chemical Brothers) were met with trepidation by a handful of online commenters fearful that the group were drastically changing up their sound.

And while those commenters were right the group have changed it up theyve done so in the best ways possible, with Dubowskys subtle touch helping The Teskey Brothers to deliver their most stunning, yet adventurous album to date. Fuller in tone and less formulaic in approach, The Winding Way sees The Teskey Brothers dive head-first into a wealth of rich textures and instruments previously unexplored by the group while maintaining the integrity, power and levity of their first two releases.

Opener Im Leaving is one for the purists, keeping its cards close to its chest with classic Teskey Brothers sensibilities Joshs voice is as powerful as ever, as is Sams minute yet deliberate strums. Itl...

Adalita, Mick Harvey and Andrew Duffield reimagine Michael Hutchences classic Rooms for the Memory "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

The trio has reworked the classic Rooms for the Memory, originally composed by Olsen in 1978 and later popularised by Michael Hutchence, the frontman of INXS, in 1987.

The song featured in the cult Australian film Dogs in Space, directed by Richard Lowenstein, holds a special place in the hearts of many. To honour Olsen and support him during his battle with Multiple System Atrophy (a form of Parkinsons), Adalita, Melbournes Sing Sing Studios in January of this year.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Renowned producer Nick Launay, who mixed the original and this new version, also participated in the project. Filmmaker Richard Lowenstein, who directed the original Rooms video, captured the entire recording session, interweaving footage of Hutchence and Olsen from the past with the modern-day clip. The video is set for a digital release today June 16.

The extended format of Rooms for the Memory 2023 will be released this weekend, on July 14, through DRW Records. This release will Space and a reworked rendition by Kav Temperley, the frontman of Eskimo Joe.

Its just a hauntingly brilliant and beautifully written song and when myself and a few of Ollies friends heard he was not well, we felt we needed to do something to help, said Jane Gazzo, the songs executive producer. Remarkably all the musicians, including Adalita and Mick Harvey two of the countrys finest artists were completely up to donating their time and had belief in the project. I think this is a stunning rework and I really hope the music industry and public get behind it and give it the new lease of life we know it deserves.

All proceeds from the sales of the vinyl, CD, and digital versions of the song will directly contribute to assisting Ollie Olsen and his ongoing medical care. Olsen, a prominent figure in electronic and avant-garde music in Australia, has been diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, a degenerative condition for which there is currently no cure. The Australian music industry has rallied behind Olsen, raising over $20,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to date.

Rooms for the Memory 2023 stands as a testament to the power of music and the collective support of the music community. It is an opportunity for music lovers to contribute to a worthy cause while experiencing a hauntingly brilliant and beautifully written song in a renewed form.

Metabolic syndrome in a nutshell "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Finding anyone, regarding any subject of your choice, with whom I will wholeheartedly agree is getting more and more difficult as I cut through the quagmire that the internet is starting to consist of.

Even some of the people whose opinions I took as gospels six or seven years ago are seemingly losing the plot. Its a little bewildering. Is it me? Maybe its me losing the plot. Ill readily admit its getting more and more difficult to understand everything thats going on as it all unravels faster and faster.

Last week I featured another YouTube video starring someone who was campaigning on the issue of the growing metabolic syndrome epidemic, but even he didnt understand the role or otherwise of fiber in the diet. Then along comes this heart surgeon who, again, had so far flown under my radar. Philip Ovadia seems more than qualified to talk about metabolic syndrome, hes operated on many victims of this epidemic and he was one of its victims himself.

Yes its a long video, but knowledge always comes at a price. I found this faultless, and I really appreciate his honesty and passion.

Place renaming crucial in upholding First Nations heritage and culture "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

Last week saw the end of a 10-year battle over the naming of Queenslands World Heritage listed Fraser Island now known as Kgari, officially restoring the name used by traditional owners for more than 60 thousand years.

Local Butchulla people and Australians nation-wide celebrated the landmark change, and the latest in several decades of re-naming events across Australia which acknowledge Indigenous heritage and connection to place.

However, place-name restoration is often a complex issue. So, what determines a place-name change and what can this mean in the broader intricacies of cultural significance?

Dallas, Ditching Dixie and A Day On The Green: The Chicks Decades On "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Throughout their nearly three-decade career in their current formation, each of these plural nouns and their final statement holds true to their global phenomena story.

In 1989, sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer started the bluegrass quartet, Dixie Chicks, in Dallas, Texas. After some reformation of shape, parting ways with bassist Laura Lynch and vocalist/guitarist Robin Lynn Macy, and onboarding Natalie Maines, Dixie Chicks really took flight, becoming the heralded country trio that they are today.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

It all began with Wide Open Spaces. The 1998 album saw all three singles, Theres Your Trouble, You Were Mine and the titular track all reach the number one spot on the country charts. The album itself would open the groups doors into the vast pop space, setting a record for the best-selling duo or group in country music history at 12 million initial copies sold, an RIAA-certified diamond standard. It saw them gain Grammy Award-winning status and significant recognition from music institutions including the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.

The trajectory was fast for the three females, as they continued to back it up with 1999s Fly, an album that introduced us to the revenge story Goodbye Earl, and a song that has amassed over 163 million streams, the revered Cowboy Take Me Away.

It was after this rise that the first obstacle hit in the form of a dispute with their record label, Sony, where they had been withheld $4 million US dollars in royalties. Following a private settlement, the Dixie Chicks were awarded their own record label imprint, Open Wide Records, affording them more control over their creative process and finances; a win in the industry game and a platform for other female artists who had shared label experiences to take action. It was at this point in their career that the trio came into their own.

Perhaps one of the most famous covers in country history, Dixie Chicks took on Fleetwood Macs iconic Landslide, released under their third album Home...

The ABS reported its December quarter estimates which showed annual population growth at very high levels in New South Wales (+138,000), Victoria (+137,700), Queensland (+116,600), and Western Australia (+62,700).

Total population growth in 2022 was close to +500,000, despite a surprisingly big drop in the estimated natural growth of the population.

That's less than, say, Canada, but it's extremely strong growth for Australia.

With a live show that invites you in and makes you never want to leave, the ARIA-nominated project Georgia State Lines unique brand of country-infused melancholy yields music thats equal parts heartsick and hopeful.

The moniker of Melbourne-based songwriter and musician Georgia Delves, and her innately talented band of Tom Brooks, Laura Baxter, and Patrick Wilson will be bringing their infectious blend of both vintage and contemporary sounds and songs steeped in Tennessee sunsets to Geelong this weekend as part of the new Lightning and Rhinestones Festival.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Joining the likes of Ben Mastwyk, Freya Josephine Hollick, Patrick Wilson and more, Georgia State Line is an exceptionally exciting addition to the lineup of the new alt-country festival.

As one of the most talked about Americana acts in Australia, thanks to the refreshingly honest sound that is even parts heartsick and hopeful, Georgia State Line has been on a hot streak since their release of the highly acclaimed debut album, In Colour, released through Cheatin Heart Records/Spunk Records.

Their 2021 debut album In Colour is a coming-of-age, for not just the band but also its listeners. Their unique brand of sound feels like home, a genuine and warm acknowledgment of the infinite possibilities of life. It is no surprise that the group have been nominated for a string of highly esteemed awards including ARIA and AIR Awards, and recently took home the trophy for Best Country Work at the 2022 Music Victoria Awards. Theyve performed as part of major festivals across Australia including CMC Rocks and Tamworth Music Festival and have warmed up the stage for major international acts like Justin Townes Earle and Eilen Jewell.

Having just been named amongst the dynamic group of Australian songwriters and composers as a recipient of the 2023 APRA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARDS (PDAs), we sat down with Georgia Delves ahead of the groups performance this Sunday.

Were looking forward to having you in Geelong for the very first Lightning and Rhinestones festival. What is it about this festival that made you keen to be involved?

Whilst I love Melbourne and the Northern suburbs of which we frequent, I always love any opportunity to diversify the venues we play through. Really excited to be playing the Barwon Club and to be featured on a bill alongside a bunch of country artists (and our peers) that are just out there doing their own thing. I think thats the most exciting part each of us belongs to a strong...

How Australias Red Pilling Begun Last Week "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Three seemingly disparate events that occurred last week the RBA raising interest rates, the leaked audio and text messages from Brittany Higgins and the resignation of Victorias Chief Health Officer (CHO) Brett Sutton might well spell the start of the true red pilling, or an awakening, for Australians.

You might wonder how?

Its obvious how the RBA rate rise matters to everyone.

Then theres Brett Suttons move to the CSIRO which you might applaud or seethe over his legacy on households and small businesses in Victoria.

But what about the Brittany Higgins scandal? Isnt it just a political smear campaign gone wrong?

Let me explore with you how these events fit into the dire situation our society is facing.

The RBA Governors Marie Antoinette moment

Let me start with the Reserve Bank of Australia raising the 24-hour cash rate last Tuesday.

That event itself wasnt much of a surprise. Its the events after that are worth shining a light on.

Right after raising rates and socking them to the ordinary Australian, the RBA Governor Philip Lowe spent the night in an extravagant function with the outgoing WA Premier Mark McGowan, State Opposition Leader Libby Mettam and several key business leaders. That dinner cost around $25,000, paid for by you and me.

If thats not enough, the next day, he put his foot in his mouth at the Morgan Stanley Summit when he said:

If people can cut back spending, or in some cases find additional hours of work, that would put them back into a positive cash flow position.

So this is what he did.

He increased your financial burden, then headed off to an extravagant night out at your expense. The next day he told his buddies that you need to work harder and spend less to make ends meet.

Talk about rubbing it in your face!

For months people have called for Lowes replacement given his poor handling of monetary policy where he misled Australian borrowers, stating that therell be no rate rises until 2024.

I can imagine these calls are going to escalate following last week.

Victoria CHO Sutton off to the CSIRO, what legacy will he d...

Activist blocking logging at Boambee State Forest near Coffs Harbour "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

The koala in NSW is predicted to become extinct by 2050. In response the Great Koala National Park (GKNP) was proposed and in 2020 the Department of Planning Industry and Environments (DPIE) identified 55,000 hectares of State Forests for addition to existing National Parks as the Great Koala National Park.

At the time the North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) spokesperson Dailan Pugh welcomed the news saying Its a step in the right direction.

During the NSW election the Labor Party committed $80 million to establish the GKNP which would connect 175,000 hectares of state forests with existing national parks, creating a nature reserve of more than 300,000 hectares according to the ABC

However, in the meantime the NSW Forestry Corporation, a government agency, continues to heavily log areas that are proposed for the GKNP. Local communities have, and continue, to actively block their logging attempts of these native forests.

Boambee State Forest on the western edge of Coffs Harbour, that is proposed to be part of the GKNP, is today being blocked from logging by activist Ella, a forest protector, who is 100 feet up a tree in a secured tree-sit in Boambee State Forest.

The lies of manufacturers and reviewers on Solid State Drives "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

What's the BEST drive for gaming?

What drive is for 'content' creators, you know OnlyFans?

What SSD is best for workstation type loads?

Is 7300MB per second too slow for my games?

There are many misconceptions and 'lies' used to promote a manufacturer's wares, in order to be the sales kings of the industry.

It's a bit like reading an automotive manufacturer's fuel economy figures which can even be 30% less than in the real world.

Unfortunately many so called tech reviewers also have little to no idea, where all they're doing is supporting the advertising babble.

"What's the best gaming SSD in 2023?" could be answered in a simple line being: The same one as in 2020?

There are other more crucial specifications that are deliberately not focused on such as longevity, endurance, or even how long can the maximum speed be kept for, or a more real world use case scenario that 99% of the computing population does, where the speed of random read and writes are most important.

One of the better explanations out there is presented in this video:

Dumpling Wars "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

The Ukrainian blonde had the smell of trouble. She had perched herself, along with her mute friend, in a restaurant across from the famed South Melbourne Market. On arriving at the modish, glorious bit of real estate known as Tipsy Village, a Polish establishment famed for accented French cuisine, she shrieked: Why do you have Ruskie dumplings on your menu?

The Polish host, a man of butter mild manner and infinite tolerance, covered in stout glory, took it in his stride. That is what they are called where I come from and that is what we serve, Peter Barnatt stated with serene clarity. (Such wickedness! Such a radical disposition!) The blonde shrieking wonder continued to invest in the dumplings some satanic quality, as if each one had been a shell, soldier, a weapon massed and launched against her pristine homeland which she had, it seemed, abandoned. We would just like coffees, she demanded. His temper finally disturbed, the host insisted that, as the two were not intent on dining, might just as well leave.

In a luxurious huff, they exited. Such behaviour was fascinating for being irresolvable no dining establishment worth its salt and cutlery should ever change that aspect of things. But for them, the issue had been decided, a prejudice firmed up and solid.

Names on the menu are a signature of a restaurants worth. Besides, dishes do not invade countries in tanks nor bomb cities. The episode was also strikingly, amusingly moronic. Food had been made out as somehow guilty, disgusting, revolting all because of a name, an identity. The sin had moved in the dough, the mixture and the potatoes, dumplings with agency. The restaurateur was all the more guilty for hosting them.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the gastro-culture war on serving dishes with a Russian name, be it with hint, flavour, or substance, has been total. Hatred of the Kremlin has become bigotry towards the dish. In Madrid, Sergiy Skorokhvatov, himself Ukrainian and an owner of a restaurant called Rasputin serving both Russian and Ukrainian cuisine, sensed trouble. He ventured into the thorny world of online discussions to clarify the nature of what he was serving, which was considered wise given what has happening to other restaurants serving Russian fare.

This method of insurance was not full proof. I thought that changing things would help us, but then people started posting similar stuff about us Dont go to Russian restaurants and pictures of blown-up buildings in Ukraine.

E.K. Clark Accuses Okowa As Crafty, Ambitious, Spends Delta Money On Atiku "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

CLARK AND OKOWA

LAGOS JUNE 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, on Wednesday, described the immediate-past governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa as a traitor and a very crafty man.

Clark also alleged that Okowa emerged as Atiku Abubakars running mate for the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after spending Delta States money on (Atikus) campaign.

He made the claim while appearing as a guest in an interview on Arise TVs Morning Show.

Clarke revealed that the 17 southern governors had, ahead of the 2023 presidential election, resolved to oppose any party that presented a northern presidential candidate in their primaries but Okowa went behind his colleagues to team up with Atiku.

Let me tell you the reason why the whole of southern Nigeria regards Okowa as a traitor. Let me tell you, he is a betrayer. Okowa volunteered to host a meeting of the 17 governors of the south. He provided accommodation for every one of them, Clark said.

He provided his secretariat, I know the person who was the secretary to the government at the time. They were there, they drafted the communique supervised by him and gave it to Akeredolu to read. He read it, then they all went to Lagos to confirm it, they went to Enugu to confirm it, not knowing that the same Okowa was spending our money for Atiku. I asked him in my letter to answer it.

He added, The delegates of the PDP primary, who did they vote for? Did they vote for Wike or Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom? They all voted for Atiku. So, he deceived his colleagues that we should produce the president from the south only to team up with Atiku to betray us. All the governors know about that. He is a man who is very ambitious, quiet and gives a wrong impression about himself that he is a very good man. Very crafty man.

Rental vacancies: tight but steady

The latest ABS Arrivals & Departures figures showed that many Aussies headed overseas during the school holidays in April 2023, with short-term departures significantly higher than arrivals.

The overseas arrivals figures will likely now be steady until the warmer summer months.

Residential rental vacancies remained steady at 1.2 per cent in May according to SQM Research.

Rental vacancies are rising significantly in Canberra and Hobart, but are generally very tight across the other six capital cities.

Capital city asking rents increased +0.6 per cent over the month to be +19.1 per cent higher over the year.

Nationally, asking rents for units (+22.1 per cent) have outpaced houses (+17.1 per cent).

Bellarine Pho pop-up restaurant returns, dishing out top-notch pho, dumplings and peking duck wraps for winter "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

If youre craving a steaming hot bowl of top-notch pho out on the Bellarine this winter, youre in luck: Bellarine Pho is back and ready to dish out this quintessential winter staple for the next couple of months.

First arriving in early May last year and running until August, Bellarine Pho is a brilliant little pop-up that made its way onto the Bellarine Peninsula, setting up in the quaint town of Queenscliff at Trident Fish Bar Queenscliff. Tucked away in the corner of the local fish and chippery, the stall might have been miniature but locals didnt let its size deceive them: the pho here is big on flavour, bringing all the zest of Vietnamese street food to the diners of the Bellarine.

Stay up to date with whats happening on the foodie scene around the region here

Now this little gem is back for the winter month, once again becoming our latest go-to now that the regions fresher temperatures have hit.

Running until 6 August, Bellarine Pho will be operating Thursday to Sunday from 4pm to 8pm, the menu packs a punch.

Kingswood "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

After a massive 30 date tour throughout Europe this year, Australian rock band Kingswood are returning home and excited to announce their biggest tour to date.

The Hometowns tour will see the band undertake more shows (70 + dates) than ever on record in the history of Australia, specially modifying a coach to sustain the overwhelmingly extensive undertaking from January 2023.

Coinciding with the tour announcement, Kingswood have released their new single Burning Holes. This is hands down the best writing to come from the Kingswood camp since in recent times and heralds a significant return to form for the critically acclaimed 4-piece.

The new single is the first track from their forthcoming studio album Home coming out in February 2023. The new album Home is melodically rich in Americana vibes and bluesy rock after being mixed and mastered in Nashville by revered American engineer Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlisle).

CHICAGO DIME "IndyWatch Feed Vic"

Chicago Dime is a Melbourne based Chicago-Texas fusion blues band.
The bands love for the blues runs deep, their name taken from a Buddy Guy lyric: I went to Chicago lookin for a dime and found a quarter.

Led by Pete Hachel and JR Barling, the bands raw energy and intensity is reminiscent of some of the best blues and improvisational music that Australia has ever offered.

Chicago Dime have the feeling that makes the blues real by involving the audience, dancing on tables, and impromptu band members.

One thing is clear about Chicago Dime; theyre never going to repeat themselves!

11 years into Oklahomas affirmative action ban, the state has seen some unintended consequences "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Oklahoma joined the lawsuit against the University of North Carolina that SCOTUS is considering in a national affirmative action ban. But some in Oklahoma say the states ban has hurt diversity in larger ways than the government acknowledges.

Ive run into instances in work when dealing with a city, and were asking questions about consultants or contractors, and a lot of times they [cant give the] answer because of the anti-affirmative action ban, says Charity Marcus. Shes a consultant in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who works with cities, mapping out strategies for economic and community development.

Make your Australian Parliament act to free Julian Assange - update "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

Further update, Wed 14 June: Still nothing said about Assange in Parliament (see Appendix 2 below). Although Julian Assange was not mentioned either in the House of Representatives or the Senate, yesterday, on Tuesday 13 June, there is still good reason to hope that, over the remaining 7 days, in which both houses sit (including today), we will hear members of the Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Support Group (Assange Support Group) speak loudly in support of Julian Assange and hold to account Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for his failure, thus far, to uphold his duty of care towards Julian Assange.

At 6pm on Monday 12 June, Kirsten Kennedy, on behalf of Queensland Greens (pictured above), responded to my email. Her response has been posted as a comment . From her reply and from the page linked to in that reply () I can see that Senator Allman-Payne speaks on behalf of all Greens Senators and Members of Parliament.

Nonetheless, I still think it critical that the case for Julian Assange be debated. From past experience, we can see that yet further statements in support of Assange or the presentation of more petitions will have zero impact on this government. Even a further Question Time question will only, at best, embarrass the Government momentarily, but do little to improve Assange's circumstances.

As I have written before, if, as has been the case up until now, Standing Orders don't allow supporters of Julian Assange to move a motion, such as my suggested motion of Monday 12 June (see Appendix 1 below), then move for a Suspension of those Standing Orders. Should the Speaker pronounce that procedural motion defeated, then, this time, call for a division so that the people of Australia will know - as Julian Assange faces extradition to the United States and imprisonment there for the rest of his life in conditions even worse than what he is now enduring at Belmarsh prison - which of their 'representatives' will have used their votes to preve...

Greens deputy leader Dr Mehreen Faruqi launches The Palestine Laboratory "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Last week in Sydney, I launched my new book, The Palestine Laboratory, at Gleebooks to a packed, overflowing audience.

The atmosphere was electric with a real appetite for hear about the reality of Israels occupation being a major export business.

I was introduced by Deputy Greens Leader, Senator Dr Mehreen Faruqi, who gave a powerful and insightful speech.

With her permission, Im posting it here because it deserves a wide readership.

Heres a teaser:

Today, it issuch a privilege to launch another masterpiece by Antony Lowenstein The Palestine Laboratory How Israel exports the technology of occupation around the world.

Even just reading out the title sends shivers down my spine. To think that Palestinians are being used as test subjects, as effectively guinea pigs for Israels military weaponry and technology of surveillance, espionage, cyber warfare, phone-hacking, and house demolition gives you a window into the toxic ideology that drives settler-colonisation, oppression, violence and apartheid.

Algerias President Starting State Visit to Russia at Invitation of Putin

(AP Photo/Fateh Guidoum, file)

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Tuesday is starting a three-day state visit to Russia meant to strengthen relations of friendship and cooperation at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, authorities said Tuesday.

The Algerian presidency said in a statement that Tebboune will attend an economic forum to be held this week in the city of St. Petersburg.

Putins invitation had been conveyed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit to Algiers in May last year with the aim of developing bilateral military, economic and humanitarian ties, and in other areas.

Some Algerian media have criticized the visit amid Russias war in Ukraine.

The timing is not at all appropriate, as this visit by the president could be understood as a bias in favor of Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, whereas officially, it has a position of neutrality, the Maghreb Emergent website wrote on Monday, raising concerns about a potential backlash from Western countries.

Tebboune answered a question on the issue during his last appearance on public television last month.

Russia is a friendly country which helped our revolution and with which we have historic political, diplomatic and economic relations, but we also have good relations with the United States and the countries of the European Union, he said.

Gas-rich Algeria is in a delicate position regarding its long-standing ties to Russia.

With drastically less capacity, Algeria is increasingly eyed by Eur...

Commonwealth Bank slapped with $3.55M fine for unlawful email practices "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia recently learned a hard lesson about spam laws.

It was hit with a penalty 3.55 million dollars for their unlawful email practices.

This fine may look big on scale however for the profit braking bank this has not dented their wallet.

The bank has reported over five and half billion dollars in profit in the last half yearly quarter, which is up 15percent.

With interests higher than ever before and the cost of living unbearable, is the big bank getting off leniently?

Rising temperatures fuel deadly coral diseases "IndyWatch Feed Qld"

On the wake of World Environment Day, new research released warns that as global temperatures rise deadly coral diseases are spreading and could become a common problem for reefs worldwide by the next century.

The study analysed coral health and disease, linking them to ocean temperature records.

Coral disease has tripled in the past 25 years and could reach higher numbers, if temperatures continue to rise.

Urgent action is needed to address climate change and protect coral reefs.

Asking prices down from their highs (except here) "IndyWatch Feed Nsw"

Asking price trends

The ABS released figures showing how the mean or average dwelling price in Australia rose $8,500 in the March 2023 quarter to $896,000, taking the total value of the dwelling stock close to $10 trillion.

Overall, though, asking prices are down from their highs.

Except, that is, in Sydney, which is at record highs, albeit only just for units...

...in Brisbane, where supply shortages have seen unit rents up by +23 per cent over the past year.

...and also in Perth, where asking prices have also now finally eclipsed their 2013/14 highs.

Adelaide asking prices are very close to their highs, but in all other capital cities asking prices are down from their respective peaks.
