Oh deer! "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Feral deer are the biggest pest we have destroying saplings, distributing weeds and crowding out native animals like wallabies and kangaroos. Australia is now home to six species of deer; fallow, red, chital, hog, rusa and sambar -In 1995, there were four populations of red deer in Australia in 2007, 65 red deer populations had been identified

Federal, state and territory governments are close to finalising a plan to coordinate efforts to eradicate the millions of feral deer damaging national parks and farmland in south east Australia.

The National Feral Deer action plan brings together new techniques and technology to control deer numbers, including game-changing thermal imaging technology and aerial shooting now being used in South Australia and Tasmania

Donald Trump was formally indicted in Miami for offences under the Espionage Act 37 charges in all. He plead Not Guilty to all charges.

Most of the charges related to the holding of documents he took from the White house after he left for his Mar-a-Lago resort when he lost the 2020 election. All documents relating to a Presidency by law goes to the National Archives and Records Administration and they referred the matter of missing documents to the FBI and Justice department. There is a recorded conversation where Trump effectively skites that there are still documents in Mar-a-Lago. Calling The Law an ass will not be a defence in this case.

The Storification of the life of others "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Remarks inspired by three sessions at the Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival

The sessions were by the following authors that presented their books:

A) The photographer and writer Jon Rhodes, 'Whitefella Way', 2022
B) Anastasia Guise, (collaborative authors) Fire Stories: Reflections from Northern Rivers locals on the 2019/2020 bushfires.
C) Sarah George, Gamu: The Dreamtime Stories, Life & Feelings of Big Bill Neidjie

Storification of the life of others might sum up the common thread
for these three presentations.

Anthropological enthusiasts with a gaze of an outsider curate and frame encounters of lived lives and experiences of others.

The mostly narrative form in text, image or audio is to make the stories 'more accessible'. It is to meet the longing for the unambiguous, a clarity of meaning, a search for orientation.

The literary device of narrative storification of the others' lived lives seems to have a contemporary ring of 'authenticity'. People open up 'first hand' about their lives and 'confess' to their trauma. The presently popular genre of autofiction blends autobiography and fiction.

Ever since the "narrative turn" (Peter Brooks) storification is en vogue and sells. The craft of narrative fiction or storytelling has also been seized by PR, medical communication, council spins and generally narrates corporate 'stories'.

In the age of attention deficits, the failure to actively listen seems ubiquitous. Distracted and overloaded, one has to relearn to listen, read and observe again. Forests of books and public mainstream broadcasters (ABC feeds) consist of 'stories' and no longer claim to be 'news'.

The genre of the first-person recount is said to easily connect with the interlocutor's emotions. Data visualisation or pictorial representation of information aims to 'bring the message home'.

The demand for authenticity in uncertain times is apparently met by the trustworthy first-person narrative. It is alluding to an immediate, direct, true and uncomplicated reciprocal exchange of meaningful experiences.

Communities of experience and practice can find a social anchor in a 'we'. For the consumer the stories appear more emotionally engrossing as the narrative appeals to an ingrained and familiar enculturated pattern of a narrative arc/structure.

There seems to be a difference if the interlocutor's stories are the literary confessing, retelling or bearing witness of an individual narration or a socially curated autofiction.
The 'story' of a representative/member of a First Nation sharing collective knowledge appears to be on another level of transmission. The Indigenous cultural capital which is shared comprises the material and symbolic goods, the knowledge that functions as a social relation within an economy of practices.<b...

Construction canary in the coal mine "IndyWatch Feed Sydney"

Rental vacancies: tight but steady

The latest ABS Arrivals & Departures figures showed that many Aussies headed overseas during the school holidays in April 2023, with short-term departures significantly higher than arrivals.

The overseas arrivals figures will likely now be steady until the warmer summer months.

Residential rental vacancies remained steady at 1.2 per cent in May according to SQM Research.

Rental vacancies are rising significantly in Canberra and Hobart, but are generally very tight across the other six capital cities.

Capital city asking rents increased +0.6 per cent over the month to be +19.1 per cent higher over the year.

Nationally, asking rents for units (+22.1 per cent) have outpaced houses (+17.1 per cent).

Asking rents for units in Sydney were up +26 per cent over the past year.

Overall there was some easing in regional rental markets, but the capital cities remain very much a landlords market, reported SQM Research.

Construction sector wavering

The Australian, Australian Financial Review, Sky News, and the Daily Mail reported that one of Australia's largest family-owned developers is teetering on voluntary administration (an industry giant with a 10-figure turnover and a reputation for very conservative capital management...

Chicago Dime is a Melbourne based Chicago-Texas fusion blues band.
The bands love for the blues runs deep, their name taken from a Buddy Guy lyric: I went to Chicago lookin for a dime and found a quarter.

Led by Pete Hachel and JR Barling, the bands raw energy and intensity is reminiscent of some of the best blues and improvisational music that Australia has ever offered.

Chicago Dime have the feeling that makes the blues real by involving the audience, dancing on tables, and impromptu band members.

Over the past weekend Sydney was graced by the glitterati of underground, online, and otherwise niche genres for Soft Centre. Hyperdub signee aya is one such artist, with her transcendent production, acerbic wit and frenetic liveshows winning her fans all across the world.

She joined Krishtie and Chuyi on Deep Web last week to chat about early musical memories, the making of im hole and 5-deck blending on YouTube.

Asked about her early musical development, aya recalls being immersed into diverse types of music and technology from a young age:

There was quite a lot of dnb and jungle in my house as a kid I had a pretty varied diet musically growing up I discovered IDM when I was 13 and started wearing big fleeces and big trousers.

aya credits this early exposure to music to her dad, who beyond playing her everything from the aforementioned dnb and jungle to Led Zeppelin, also had an eye for early music software.

The scene I was involved in was the spare bedroom in our house because we had music production software from when I was 7. My dad was an early tech adopter we had Ableton 2.

As she grew up and eventually moved to London from her native Huddersfield, aya first made music under the moniker LOFT. That project spanned a variety of sounds, fro...

Greens deputy leader Dr Mehreen Faruqi launches The Palestine Laboratory "IndyWatch Feed Sydney"

Last week in Sydney, I launched my new book, The Palestine Laboratory, at Gleebooks to a packed, overflowing audience.

The atmosphere was electric with a real appetite for hear about the reality of Israels occupation being a major export business.

I was introduced by Deputy Greens Leader, Senator Dr Mehreen Faruqi, who gave a powerful and insightful speech.

With her permission, Im posting it here because it deserves a wide readership.

Heres a teaser:

Today, it issuch a privilege to launch another masterpiece by Antony Lowenstein The Palestine Laboratory How Israel exports the technology of occupation around the world.

Even just reading out the title sends shivers down my spine. To think that Palestinians are being used as test subjects, as effectively guinea pigs for Israels military weaponry and technology of surveillance, espionage, cyber warfare, phone-hacking, and house demolition gives you a window into the toxic ideology that drives settler-colonisation, oppression, violence and apartheid.

Novak Djokovic is larger than tennis "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Novak Djokovic is larger than tennis

Despite being ranked as the world's best male tennis player, Novak Djokovic's personality has made him headline news for many other reasons, writes Dr Binoy Kampmark.

THE VICTORY of Novak Djokovic in the latest French Open had the usual mixed reception in Australia. While Australians pretend to like radicals, larrikins and the occasional deviant, the contrary is true. Tight-buttoned, properly behaved and conformist to the point of invisibility, the boringly predictable are always preferred. You can rely on them.

Even in Melbourne, a town where his following is strong (he has won ten Australian Opens), the callback circuit on the local ABC radio station qualified, ignored and even denigrated the Serbs latest achievement. At best, 23 grand slams, making him the most accomplished player in the open era, had to be seen alongside other caveats. He did not, one caller churlishly insisted, do the grand slam in one year, twice!

Another, showing the sort of maturity demanded in some spectators, insisted that a French Open without Rafael Nadal was not a tournament worth seeing. Even the radio host joined in, regretting that it had to be Novak getting his nose in front.

Of the big three who have dominated tennis for almost two decades Roger Federer, Nadal and Djokovic the Serbian has tended to be seen as one playing catch-up; his talent formidable, colossal, yet limping behind the anointed ones. But the views of him as a player have rarely remained technical or specific to his craft. There is always something else about him that irritates and enrages, necessitating his diminishing. He does not play the role of what might be termed the nice person.

Cathal Kelly, writing for The Globe and Mail, wistfully recall...

Grubbers take giant strides forward "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Ocean Grove is starting to take giant strides in its quest to return as a Bellarine Football League power.

While the win-loss ratio stands at 3-7 this season, the past two weeks have shown that Dave Farrells side is on the right track.

While honourable losses are rarely spoken about, the Grubbers 36-point round nine defeat to Modewarre was a sign of things to come.

They then backed it up on Saturday in round 10 to defeat Newcomb away from home by 32 points.

I cant remember ever feeling like I did immediately after the Modewarre game, Farrell said.

I hate losing and we went out there to win, but although the scoreboard didnt reflect it and as silly as it sounds I think we did a bit. Its the clearest the boys have been without the coaches needing to point out where they got us and what we need to be better at for four quarters.

That game will be a great reference point for us moving forward training and this weeks game showed improvements on the back of that.

Ocean Grove never looked like losing against Newcomb and finally hit the scoreboard with a good spread of goalkickers.

The spread was the most pleasing part of the 17 goals we had two defenders and three mids kick goals which reinforces to the players how much of an impact they can have if we spread hard offensively and make sure we are well represented forward of the ball, Farrell said.

Weve talked a lot about, and trained to, our running patterns from the contest (and) this week is the best we have done that. We had good coverage across the ground but representation forward of the ball because they ran so hard.

Josh Horton played his first game back from a hamstring injury and starred with four goals.

Hes a genuine utility, we played him back out of necessity in the early part of the season, Farrell said.

He was top three in last years B&F as a mid and on the weekend he played as a high forward the sort of player youd love three of.

Youngster Jet Kneebone continues to impress and was named best with a starring role in the midfield.

Hes first year out of Under 18s and set the standard for our spread early in the game, Farrell said.

Trent Handreck played the game he has been threatening to. Across halfback (he) flew for his marks and looked to get involved more when we had the ball.

Ocean Groves face a tough assignment this week in Drysdale and Farrell believes his side still has to get better with its consistency.

Consistency is probably the stock response to where we can find our biggest improvement right now, he said.

The whole coaching group have worked hard to make sure there is no doubt in the players minds of how we want them to play and what our best footy looks like so now its just a matter of playing that way for longer periods, but I guess thats what the opposition are looking for too.

Local Lions continue to help youth "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Lions Club of Ocean Grove Barwon Heads recently presented a cheque for $6000 to the Bellarine Training and Community Hubs (BTACH) Drop In group.

The funds will be used for the annual three-day September camp, which this year is at Shoreham on Westernport Bay.

Every Friday during each term, young people between the ages of 12 to 18 gather together to have fun and become involved in different group activities.

For Lexie each Friday is a chance to meet up with friends. Charlie enjoys the delicious food provided by Feed Me Bellarine.

Drop In has been operating for more than 20 years. The programs vision is to create friendship networks and along the way build resilience in a very challenging world of social media.

Stephanie looks forward to the end of the school week to relax with friends, while Nath, Maddy and Grace enjoy the various activities both at the centre and in other places.

Youth workers, Mel and Dillon, provide a safe, inclusive and fun environment where the young people can develop social skills and self- confidence.

We are hugely thankful for the ongoing support the Lions Club provide BTACH to deliver our annual camp as part of our youth Drop In program, BTACH manager Chris James said.

This camp provides a fantastic experience for young people from across our community to engage with their peers and other community members in an

environment that many have not had the opportunity to experience in their lives. The Lions Club really do help change lives in a meaningful way.

Lions Club President, Alan Daw, said that one of the primary purposes of the club is to support young people in their education as well as their social development.

Each year the club presents encouragement awards to each primary school in the area. Two Year 6 children from every school receive $100 each and a certificate of encouragement.

Swimming Pool Safety What You Need to Know "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Installing a new swimming pool in your backyard is a very exciting moment indeed. But before you start inviting everyone for a dip, you need to first make sure that your pool is safe to swim in.

As a responsible pool owner, its essential that you dont cut corners when it comes to pool safety. In Victoria, if you dont adhere to local safety regulations, you could get a fine that can go all the way up to $1,600. More importantly, failing to comply with safety regulations also puts you and your loved ones at a higher risk of getting hurt. Common pool injuries include drowning, slip and falls, poisoning via pool chemicals, and electrical injuries.

From your choice of pool pavers to the chlorine content of your water, there are a lot of things that you need to consider to make sure that your swimming pool and pool area is safe.

In this blog, were going to go over five things that you can do to keep your backyard pool safe.

Work with Reliable Pool Builders

The first thing that you need to do is to find a reliable pool builder. Experienced pool builders will have a comprehensive understanding of all relevant safety regulations in your area. They will make sure that your pool is built according to local government guidelines and acquire all the necessary building permits for you. If youre having trouble choosing the right paver or the right pool pump, a good builder should be able to provide you with sound advice about that as well.

In Victoria, some aspects of your pool will need to be inspected by registered building surveyors or inspectors before they can be approved for use. A reputable builder will be able to help pass any safety inspections that are required by your local council.

Build a Proper Pool Fence

According to the Victorian Building Authority, all swimming pools or spas that are more than 30cm deep must have a safety barrier that is compliant with AS1926.1-1993.If youre building a pool barrier fence, it must meet the following criteria:

 • Must be at least 1.2m high
 • Have a gap under the fence that does not exceed 100mm
 • Horizontals must be at least 0.9m apart if the verticals are between 10mm and 100m
 • Verticals must not be further apart than 10mm in all other cases
 • If it meets existing fencing, it must be protected to a distance of 1.2m on the outside of the pool fence and 300mm on the inside

For the full criteria, please refer to the pool barrier fact sheet provided by the Victorian Government.

Have Rescue Equipment and a First Aid Kit Readily Available

If you have a swimming pool in your backyard, its important to have rescue equipment like life rings, life hooks, and rescue tubes. Suc...

The C Word "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Over the weekend we had the groundbreaking idea to get some people around to help us drink alcohol. I just thought that if Im going to start on a course of possibly unpleasant treatment I need to have some fun first. It was a brilliant plan and we had a good time. The hangover the next day was not so great, particularly because hangovers make me go deep, so there I was, feeling bad about having cancer. Eventually I solved the problem by watching the new season of I Think You Should Leave. As expected, it did not make me laugh, but I had a good time thinking, What is this bullshit?

I have decided that I am not going to attempt to deal with any of this shit by myself. Fuck being alone, I want to be constantly talking to people. On the phone, texting, online, face to face, in two cars that have pulled up cop style in a parking lot, Im not picky, I am not even slightly interested in trying to staunch it out. Im not going to have anything to do for a while, its not like Im doing the medical stuff, they have people for that now, so Im going to need to be kept busy in some way that doesnt involve work, effort or trying. Sure, youll possibly be talking to someone who is on drugs and in a dream state, but imagine all the wacky opinions Ill have. I dont even need to sell this shit, it sells itself.

Ive been having these thoughts about messaging people I havent seen for a while, to let them know I appreciate them. I like the idea. Im not wondering if these thoughts are weird or unconventional, I am in fact overwhelmed by the size of how sensible I am being right now. Im like a being of pure commonsense. I have attained heights of reasonableness hitherto impossible for one such as I. Or maybe I never had cancer before, so being extremely direct with people about how I love them just didnt come up. Ive also had smaller thoughts about letting some champs know that I think theyre a low dog, but now that I radiate pure love in every direction it seems like a bad use of energy.

Independent Artist of the Week: Zion Garcia "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

Hit shuffle on Western Sydney rapper and producer Zion Garcias discography and hes sure to offer up a little something youll love. From warm, silky, jazz-inspired brass sections to high-intensity, hard-hitting hip hop flows, his candid lyricism remains a thread throughout.

Zion isnt an artist you can neatly place into the hip hop genre. Chatting to Lill Scott on Up For It! this week, he rattled off an assorted and glimmering list of influences whose music sits well outside hip hop. Ranging from The Gorillaz, Hiatus Kaiyote, Isaiah Rashad and Michael Jackson, his craft puts a spotlight on groove and vibe first and foremost.

Taking out the $20,000 impact-focused prize, Rudds spellbinding ode-to-nature STONEY CREEK was the winner of the 2023 prize. He has very generously decided to donate the prize money to environmental organisations (to be announced shortly).

What an honour to be named winner of the ENVIRONMENTAL MUSIC PRIZE. The land and sea and all its magnificent plants and animals have been the biggest inspiration for my music by far since I began writing songs when I was a kid and, so as far as music awards go, this one feels perfect, Rudd explains.

Thanks to all of you who voted for me and to all of the other artists nominated. Big love.

Rudd was sailing up to Cape York with his wife when he wrote Stoney Creek,:

It was under the melaleuca trees that I wrote Stoney Creek as I contemplated life and what was happening in the world. I had been hearing stories about how the forced lockdowns across the world had allowed space for many of the environments natural ecosystems to spring back to life and recover from relentless human traffic. I had been thinking Without nature, without our natural resources, how do we survive?

The Next Dalai Lama? "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso turns eighty-nine next month. For sixty four years, he has led a non-violent opposition to the illegal annexation of Tibet by the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army in 1959. Since then, he and a faction of other Tibetans who have fled have spiritually led Tibet in exile from Dharamsala in India.

The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama has been a contentious issue as the Chinese government wants to use a new leader to increase its control over the Tibetan people. In contrast, the exiled government wishes to use the new Dalai Lama to continue their peaceful opposition.

As of now, both parties have proclaimed that they will pick their own Dalai Lama, which will create competing heads of a religion.

The National Celtic Folk Festival was good craic this long-weekend with singing and dancing in Portarlington "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

For the 19th time, the small beachside town of Portarlington hosted the National Celtic Folk Festival over the June long weekend. With two full days and two half days of entertainment, the festival provided a lineup of singers, dancers, games, and workshops, to interest near-everyone, from the tiny tots through to those in their golden years.

Graced with a dry weekend (a stark contrast from last year!), those from near and far travelled to Portarlington to make the most of the Celtic Festival. The setting of the family-friendly festival is beautiful, allowing spectators to walk around the grounds while taking in the surrounding picturesque seascape.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Money is tight for most of us at the moment, but you dont need to buy a ticket to get a taste of the Celtic Festival, with free roving entertainment, a market, childrens craft, and outdoor demonstrations happening around the town. For those with children, there is a playground in the festival area which proved a popular and free way to burn off some energy!

A roving entertainer that drew my attention this weekend was Irishman Mick Gribben, who had market-goers stopped in their tracks to listen to his strong vocal-only rendition of Grace (an Irish song popularised by Jim McCann and The Dubliners).

Similarly, the Geelong RSL Pipes and Drums drew a hefty crowd with traditional tunes and the much-loved Amazing Grace. An advertised schedule of the free entertainment would be a very welcome addition for next years festival, to give spectators the best chance to catch a pop-up set or activity.

Ben Roberts-Smith's alleged war crimes: 'Higher-ups' off the hook

It appears no action is being taken against more senior officers who had the responsibility of command over Ben Roberts-Smith during his alleged war crimes in Afghanistan, writes Belinda Jones.

ON MONDAY, 5 June 2023, the complete 736-page judgement by Justice Anthony Besanko in the Ben Roberts-Smith civil defamation trial was published.

In his damning judgement, Justice Besanko said:

'I do not accept the applicant (Ben Roberts-Smith)and Persons 5, 29, 35 and 38 as honest and reliable witnesses.'

Besanko, in dismissing the civil defamation case instigated by Roberts-Smith, found 'on the balance of probabilities' that journalists Nick McKenzieChris Masters and David Wroe had proved the allegations they published against the former SAS soldier, which included complicity in the murder of six civilians.

It's important to note this is not a criminal finding of guilt but a determination on the civil standard of the balance of probabilities.

Churchie Emerging Artist winner, Joel Sherwood Spring "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

Joel Sherwood Spring

The Churchie Emerging non acquisitive Art Prize founded by the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane in 1987 has since sought to identify and profile rising artistic talent. This years winner of the $15,000 prize is Sydney based artist Joel Sherwood Spring. Joel talks to Arts Wednesday about his winning work Diggermode (2022) which is being exhibited now at, no less, the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane.

Joel has a masters degree in Architecture and is studying for his PhD at the moment. His early interests were not so much in art practice, but in pulling things apart to see how they worked.

Diggermode (2022) is a 23 minute, two-channel atmospheric and chilling video exploring the ongoing conflict between country and colonisation, focusing primarily on extraction and storage. The extraction industries, in particular mining, are questioned and challenged for their relationship to the traditional sovereign owners.

SCU receives $3.5m grant to improve Indigenous midwifery services "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Imagine being 38 weeks pregnant and having to leave your family and community behind to travel hundreds of kilometres to get the care you and your baby will need for the birth.

Though far from ideal, this is the reality many Aboriginal women in remote communities face when its time to have their babies and its something Southern Cross University and its partner organisations are committed to changing.

Two women holding a decorative frame

Project leads Professor Gillian Gould and Dr Marilyn Clarke

Southern Cross University has secured a $3.558 million grant from the Department of Health and Aged Care to collaboratively scope and design an innovative program for Birthing on Country with three Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations.

The Indigenous Australians Health Programme Workforce and Maternity Services Grant will include help for Aboriginal mums-to-be to quit smoking.

The project will be led by Professor Gillian Gould and Australias first Aboriginal Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist, Dr Marilyn Clarke, both from the Universitys Faculty of Health.

Im very excited to be part of this successful research grant, which will allow the Birthing on Country movement in Australia to be further explored and integrated with culturally competent smoking cessation care. said Dr Clarke.

Professor Gould leads iSISTAQUIT, a program for pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who are wanting to quit smoking.

We know that Birthing on Country has a very powerful impact on Aboriginal women, and that quitting smoking is one of the most important things they can do for their own health and the health of their babies, said Professor Gould.

Coupling the already successful iSISTAQUIT program with a long-term plan to facilitate safe Birthing on Country will create a holistic pre-natal health plan for Aboriginal women living remotely.

The program has three main objectives: to scope Birthing on Country, to tailor the iSISTAQUIT program to local communities and to boost the number of graduating Aboriginal midwives through an increase in scholarships and opportunities.

Southern Cross University has significant experience in health promotion and health services research, said Professor Mary Spongberg, Southern Cross Universitys Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Academic Capability).

Its great to see University research at the service of better outcomes for Indigenous women and their babies.

Southern Cross University has a highly regarded Midwifery program at its Coffs Harbour and Gold Coast campuses, with the provision of cu...

Cat curfew survey invitation "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

The Bellarine community is invited to have their say on a cat curfew review to reduce the impact on native birds and animals.

The City of Greater Geelong Council has created a survey for people to share their thoughts on the current curfew and whether any changes are needed.

Mayor Trent Sullivan said he hoped everyone would participate in the discussion whether they lived in an urban or rural area and whether they owned a cat or not.

The City understands that cats are treasured companions for many people throughout our region, he said.

The rules that outline how cats need to be contained are crucial, similar to the regulations that require dogs to be securely enclosed on their owners property.

The current order requires cats to be confined to their owners property from sunset to sunrise.

Kardinia Ward councillor Bruce Harwood said a key goal of the review was to help create a safe community for cats, native wildlife, and the broader environment.

Along with assisting us protect our native wildlife, a curfew is important in the safety of our beloved pets, he said.

It reduces the chances of a cat getting lost, being struck by a vehicle, fighting with other animals or picking up diseases.

A curfew also helps with neighbourhood relations, avoiding cats spraying, calling, and defecating in gardens.

The cat curfew review forms part of the Citys Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022 to 2025 actions to investigate a 24-hour cat confinement option to address cat behaviour.

The survey is available online at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/catcurfew or as a hard copy from the Citys Customer Service Centre until Sunday, July 16.

NSW Maritime calls for boaters to be safe, bar none "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

NSW Maritime put the spotlight on the risks of bar crossings and capsizing over the long weekend as part of a statewide safety blitz.

NSW Maritime State Coordinator Damian Logue said the Safety First, Bar None campaign was aimed at educating boaters, targeting coastal bars in NSW including Narooma, Moruya, Crookhaven River, Kianinny, Yamba, South West Rocks, Forster and Swansea.

Marine Rescue volunteers heading out in the rescue vessel. Photo supplied.

Across the campaign we engaged in over 1500 vessel safety checks and issued around 200 official cautions, with the top three offences relating to safety equipment, lifejacket use and licencing or registration.

Over the last 12 months almost half of all capsizings on our waterways have occurred at a coastal bar. Around 10 per cent end in a fatality and one in three with serious injuries. We want this to change.

The 47 coastal bars in NSW each have a unique set of risks even when it looks calm, conditions can change quickly depending on the tide and weather.

Large breaking waves and changing conditions can make coastal bars life-threatening to boaters, Mr Logue said.

Before attempting any bar crossing boaters need to equip themselves with the knowledge that could save their life.

Our top tips for safe bar crossings are to check the weather, your vessel, and your safety equipment before leaving shore. Always aim to cross with an incoming tide, and dont try and turn around once you start crossing, take waves head on and try not to hit them at a high speed, Mr Logue said.

Natural resources "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

Sunday afternoon in the Muckleford bush was grey and gloomy, devoid of birds.

As I passed a lone Cherry Ballart beside the track, things changed in an instant. This marvellous species is a magnet for small birds and well worth using as a cue for searching. A mixed party of Superb Fairy-wrens, Brown Thornbills, Buff-rumped Thornbills, a pair of Scarlet Robins, a Grey Shrike-thrush and a Grey Fantail were all quietly foraging around the tree and amongst the foliage.

After some brief googling I came across a nice paper from 2009 on the relationship between bird abundance and habitat features at Clarkesdale Sanctuary (near Linton, south of Ballarat)

Generalised linear modelling showed that total bird abundance was positively related to the cover of planted native vegetation, native low shrubs and young wattles Acacia spp. and to the presence of indigenous Cherry Ballart Exocarpos cupressiformis.

I then recalled a note about Cherry Ballart that I posted in 2019, which includes a link to an article in The Conversation by Gregg Muller well worth a read.

Ill do some more research on this topic, so stay tuned.

Driver involved in fatal Hunter bus crash was going too fast, police allege "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

The man behind the wheel during Sundays fatal bus crash in the Hunter Valley was going too fast to negotiate the roundabout where the accident occurred, according to police.

Ten people died and an additional 25 required hospital treatment after the bus filled with wedding guests tipped over at the roundabout on Wine Country Drive near the Hunter Expressway off ramp at Greta in the mid morning.

As a 58-year-old man waited to face court this morning charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, Acting Assistant Police Commissioner David Waddell told the media that the accused was driving in a manner that was inconsistent with the conditions.

Obviously his speed was too quick for him to negotiate that roundabout causing the vehicle to fall onto its left side, Assistant Commissioner Waddell said.

He said Cessnock Council had set up two community crisis centres to help support the family and friends of those involved in the accident, and that police and other first responders were also receiving support.

Some of our police and other responders were visibly distraught, Assistant Commissioner Waddell said.

It was a very chaotic scene.

Inquiries indicate 36 people were on the bus at the time with 10 passengers declared deceased and 25 passengers transported to hospital via helicopter and road.

Assistant Commissioner Waddell said that, as of Monday night, 12 of the 25 people taken to hospital had now been released.

Of those who remained in hospital, two were in the ICU.

Injuries range from lacerations to serious breaks and fractures, Assistant Commissioner Waddell said.

Ages ranged from people in their 20s to 60s

A large-scale emergency services response was launched in the immediate aftermath of the accident, including officers from Hunter Valley Police District, Police Rescue, Traffic and Highway Patrol, NSW Ambulance paramedics, NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Rural Fire Service, and various helicopters for hospital transports.

Inquiries indicate 36 people were on the bus at the time with 10 passengers...

Lack of sewage options leads to development ban in Ballina "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

When second dwellings were as rare as an indoor dunny turns out modern sewer systems arent keeping up with modern demand. Image supplied

Nearly all property owners in Ballinas boutique Fig Tree Hill estate near Lennox Head have been banned from building second dwellings indefinitely owing to sewage concerns.

Dual occupancy developments are allowed in Ballinas rural zones according to its Local Environment Plan 2012 but council staff say the sewer network at Fig Tree Hill estate is maxed out.

There arent any plans to increase the networks capacity, staff say, because the project is considered too costly.

Staff at last months meeting said their view had always been that it was entirely uneconomic to upgrade the sewer system at Fig Tree Hill.

The estates original sewer design was to provide enough capacity for the existing development, staff said, with no apparent options for future expansion.

Dual occupancy development had subsequently never been allowed in the estate, staff said, adding that the fifty or so lots also failed to meet suitability for on-site sewage systems.

These properties tend to be narrow, steep, relatively small in size, average size less than thousand square meters, and of a soil type not ideally suited to onsite sewage systems, staff said.

No immediate plans to expand Fig Tree Hill, say staff

Review: Yazmin Lacey at City Recital Hall "IndyWatch Feed Sydney.arts"

Yazmin Lacey at City Recital Hall 7 June 2023

Review by Joshua Duffy / Photography by Joe Johnson

Last week, Wednesday June 7, the City Recital Hall in Sydney was graced with the contemporary R&B and soul of UKs Yazmin Lacey. Supporting Yazmin was Melbourne producer IJALE and Sydneys Natalie Slade. This performance celebrated the opening of Switched On: a series of shows that shift the sonic dial towards contemporary approaches to music and lighting. This series is brought to us by City Recital Hall: from now until September 30.

Photography : Joe Johnson

Yazmin Lacey appears on stage as an embodiment of R&B and soul, and with that comes a style of voice that wears its heart on its breath. However, as Yazmin opened with Bad Company the second track off her recent debut release, Voice Notes, behind her nive intrepid blossoming of pure talent, was a band of serious professional playing, and to this I refer to a virtuosity in jazz just as much as a relaxed amusement in approach. I dont want to undermine Yazmins professionalism by any stretch, that just wasnt part of her aura; there was no overreaching past the natural beauty and soul of her lyrical presence to over-colour her words with diminished scales or any of that kind of jazz. Yazmin floated her vocals gently, patiently and powerfully in and amongst what was quite a jazz driven soul-funk accompaniment.

Yazmins artist taglines often include a description of her as a late entry into music, which is somewhat true given her debut EP, Black Moon was only released in 2017. However, when Yazmin played the self-titled track of that EP second last in her set, my ears could have easily placed it on her latest release. Black Moon displayed the mellifluous structure and flow and seamless subtlety of Yazmins artistic approach to her music. Yazmin performed Black Moon second last in her set and experiencing it live was a testament to her delayed prodigiousness. There is a mature embodiment to her vocal ability, and her presence. At the halfwa...

A new report from the Grattan Institute reveals recent migrants within the past five years are twice as likely to be underpaid than long-term residents with similar skills in the same jobs.

The report also mentions in 2022, between 5% to 16% of employed recent migrants were paid less than the national minimum wage.

From high-class restaurants in hospitality or in heavy labor jobs in agriculture, these migrants may earn less than $10 an hour.

The Shape of Dust "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

On January 2018, Hazem Hamouda left his Brisbane home for a family trip to his birthplace of Cairo, where his daughter Lamisse was about to begin a university exchange. Upon arrival at Cairo International Airport, Hazem was arrested in a random sweep by authorities, accused of sympathising with a terrorist organisation.

Lamisse abandoned what should have been two years of education in her cultural homeland to step into the public eye and campaign for her fathers release. Mr Hamouda was released after a year of being detained, and this year Hazem alongside his daughter Lamisse have completed a book encapsulating this tragic event.

The memoir is an extraordinarily crafted account of what its like to find your life turned upside down overnight. Its also a nuanced discussion of race, religion, gender and culture in Australia and Egypt, and what its like to live between the two, from two generations of the same family.

The Wires Aryana Mohmood spoke to Lamisse Hamouda, Brisbane-based youth worker and writer, about her book The Shape of Dust and how she came to write this book with her father.

The book will be published on July 4 2023. You can find this book in all good Dymocks retailers around Australia, and from independent book sellers and it is available for pre-order on Booktopia.

Lamisse and her father will be in Melbourne for the emergers writers festival, speaking at the Wheeler center on Thursday night, June 22, there are still tickets available and you can book on the EWF website. There will also be a book launch in Meanjin at AVID Reader on Sunday July 16 at 2pm, and to book please go to the AVID reader.

Looking to move "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Hello! My(30f) wife (32f) and I are thinking of moving to Townsville and have a lot of questions. We have been looking at houses to buy and have noticed the market is MUCH cheaper than where we currently live in rural VIC. Can anyone advise as to why this is? We both work in the social work sector (myself in out of home care and my wife is a counselor), it looks like there are plenty of working opportunities in the area, does anyone know what the work culture is like? We also have a 6 month old son and will likely be trying for a second child soon, what is day care availability like there? There is at least a 12 month wait list where we currently live. What sort of schools are in the area? How affordable is the cost of living? What are the beaches like? Are we likely to face a lot of homophobia?

Any other relevant information you think would be beneficial would also be appreciated.

Thanks all!

Brisbane detention protest calls for freedom for Hamid "IndyWatch Feed Sydney"

Around 50 people held a protest at Brisbanes immigration detention centre, BITA (Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation), yesterday Sunday 11 June.

The protest called for the release of Hamid, an Iranian refugee brought from Nauru to Australia in February this year.

Hamid had been held on Nauru for over nine years. But, while other refugees and asylum seekers, similarly transferred from Nauru, have been released, usually within a week or two of their transfer, Hamid remains in detention four months later.

Since 2019, Hamid has been cruelly separated from his two adult children when Peter Dutton refused to transfer Hamid to Australia with his children, under the Medevac laws. Despite representation to the Labor government on Hamids behalf, there has been no explanation for the continued separation of the family or Hamids detention.

The Freedom For Hamid rally ended with a powerful Haka by New Zealand immigration detainees video clip available here

From over 70 people in December last year, there are just 13 refugees left on Nauru, as Labor has progressively transferred them to Australia, yet they are paying the notorious detention company MTC, $420 million for garrison services until September 2025.

Raymond (Ray) Adams AM "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Dr Raymond (Ray) Adams has been given the Kings Birthday Honours AM for his significant service in education and psychometric testing.

The Fairhaven man has worked in educational research for more than 20 years and was the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) design leader.

Thats really been a highlight, he said.

PISA is incredibly influential in policy settings about education worldwide, and I was the designer of that for the whole world internationally.

Ray has had roles across many organisations, including the Australian Council for Education Research and the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.

He said he fell into education and psychometric testing many years ago.

I have an interest in education, statistics and mathematics and so its a combination of those two areas, he said.

I got involved in comparing student achievement outcomes across countries, and I found that incredibly interesting.

It was eye opening in the sense of becoming aware of education all around the world and how its a challenge that the whole world faces.

Ray said his favourite part about working in his career often changed, but he liked helping people and felt honoured to receive the Member of the Order (AM) award.

I spend a lot of my time now working with offsiders, typically younger people, helping them contribute in their own way, he said.

I have a fairly severe disability, and it means I need 24-hour care. I can only keep doing what I do because of my wife. It makes me continue to live a satisfying life.

Margaret Grigg OAM "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Geelongs Dr Margaret Grigg has received an OAM for her close to 40 years of service in the mental health field.

The Forensicare chief executive officer has had many health roles in organisations like Victorias Department of Health, Mind Australia and the World Health Organisation.

I spent 12 months working internationally for the World Health Organisation in early mental health policy, and that it was an amazing time, she said.

A real highlight for me was following the Victorian bushfires (Black Friday 2009). I coordinated Victorias psychosocial response to the bushfires, and that was such an incredible time.

It was an opportunity to really support incredibly traumatised individuals, communities and really make a difference.

Margaret had received the National Emergency Medal in 2012 and said it didnt feel quite real to receive the OAM.

I feel a bit undeserving of it but also privileged, she said.

Ive worked with people whove taught me so much, and I think mental health is an incredibly important conversation for us to have in the community.

I think about the people Ive worked with or known in the context of a long career working in the mental health area, and I can think of many people who are more brave and deserving than me.

Margaret said she was endlessly amazed by peoples courage, and it was necessary to maintain hope in the mental health field.

I have met so many people who have found their way through the most horrendous experiences, she said.

If I could encourage one nurse to come and work in mental health, that would make me super happy.

Its meaningful work where you make real differences in the lives of people.

Ian Caldwell OAM "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Ask anyone on the Bellarine, or greater Geelong for that matter, who is interested in cricket and chances are they know Ian Caldwell.

The Belmont resident loves the game and its that passion that resulted in him being the recipient of an OAM this week.

A veteran of more than 500 games for his beloved Portarlington Cricket Club, Mr Caldwells presence as a player, administrator and umpire is well known throughout the region.

Mr Caldwell still plays for Geelong Seniors and has been president of the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association since 2013.

He is a life member of Portarlington and the BPCA and is Director of the Victorian Country Cricket League Barwon Region.

But despite the decades playing, overseeing and umpiring the sport he loves, its the people along the way that have made it worthwhile.

The opportunity to meet wonderful people and form friendships has been the best part, he said.

When I go down to Port at the beginning of the season and catch up with friends, youre catching up with family. It adds quality to your life.

As a custodian of the game its up to you to do good and leave the status of the game in the same condition if not better.

Mr Caldwell said the nomination came as a total surprise.

I was in a bit of a state of shock, he said.

Its not something that youre expecting. Im the fifth person connected with Port to get a national award.

Other than cricket, Mr Caldwell is currently treasurer of Geelong Friends of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and has been secretary of the American Civil War Roundtable of Australia for 12 years.

Rieny Nieuwenhof OAM "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Portarlingtons Rieny Nieuwenhof is a proud owner of an OAM for his service to veterans, their families, and the community.

The Australian Army veteran did a tour in Vietnam in 1971 and understands the need to look after the men and women who have served.

I know the difficulties that veterans have gone through since the time they were in Vietnam and then of course afterwards, he said.

That experience of Vietnam has, for many veterans, left a very deep and traumatic marking on their consciousness.

Theyve not only suffered physical problems, but they also have major psychological issues as well as a result of their experience in the war zone.

Rieny said that receiving the Kings Birthday Honours OAM award for helping veterans was very special.

Its a great honour to be recognised for the work that Ive been doing, he said.

I didnt expect that would happen at all. I suppose like many recipients of these awards, you do it because you want to, and you do it on a volunteer basis.

Rieny said he joined the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Geelong and District Sub Branch after finishing his professional teaching career and has been the president there since 2013.

My main work has been the welfare of veterans and their families helping them in various ways, particularly in the welfare and social area, he said.

Veterans, whether theyre Vietnam Veterans or any other veterans, have served their country and done a fantastic job putting their lives on the line if necessary.

They need to be acknowledged, recognised, and people need to appreciate what theyve gone through.

Location hard to ascertain; I'm up whitfield/brinsmead way and it sounded like maybe manunda/city direction? Definitely wasn't a car backfiring anyway. Oh shit and there's one more for finality as I edit this!

Getting Dangerous Geriatrics Off The Road? "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

What is a fair way, to discern, getting old people off the road, that are no longer fit to safely operate a vehicle?

I ride a motorbike, and I am sick to shit with dealing with a 'once a day /once a ride' near miss with old people /seniors, that don't even seem to realise they've just A) Cut into my lane, B) Pulled out at a T intersection me nearly T-Boning them, then waved me off like nothing (Mount Sheridan) C) Terrifyingly Vacant In Car Parks D) Pulled out of a car park without checking for oncoming traffic E) Looking for a park in town, without indicating, then cutting from left lane to centre park F) Doing 20km/h under literally everywhere, then speeding on residential streets.

Had enough.
Fuck ya'll old bitches!
