Joy McKean wrote many of husband Slim Dustys hits "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

The music industry pressures of stardom and life on the road make it hard for marriages and relationships to last. So youd expect musical spouses would not choose to work together.

A surprising number of them do work together, creating successful and enduring musical and personal partnerships. One of the most successful happened here in Australia.

In the 1940s, a young singer called Slim Dusty was on tour, where he met Joy, one half of the McKean Sisters. Joy and Heather were big radio stars then, while Slim was relatively unknown.

Joy and Slim got married, and Joy was Slims manager for 50 years, writing many of his most popular songs. Together, they made more than 100 albums, won awards aplenty, and toured like no other act.

Joy McKean died in May. She was 93.

Court rules Ed did not steal Marvins song "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Songs often sound similar. Theres a limited number of notes and chords, and a huge number of hit songs have been been built with the popular 1-5-6-4 chord progression. In the key of C, thats CGA minorF. Its a phenomenon lovingly parodied by Aussie band Axis of Awesome in their marvellous Four Chord Song

Similar songs often end up in court, where judges and juries are asked to decide whether one writer has copied another. Its sometimes impossible, and worse, its often ridiculous, and opportunistic. Theres only so many notes and chord progressions, so inevitably theres going to be similarities. Could a writer sue another for using some of the same words?

Ed Sheeran is the latest to be sued, by the heirs of someone who wrote Marvin Gayes marvellous Whats Going On. The jury says Ed did not infringe.

Its hard to imagine a world without Tina Turner "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Tina Turner was a very big star twice in the same lifetime. First time round, she was the real talent in the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, a high-energy touring funk and soul phenomenon. Tina could sing, dance, move, put on a show, better than anyone in the business. This made her husband wealthy, and jealous. Tina endured years of violence and misery, finally leaving him on tour in Texas.

Lean years followed, but Tina found an ally in Australian music promoter Roger Davies, who signed her up in 1980, getting her well paid Las Vegas gigs, steering her on the way to multi-platinum albums through the 80s. Tina Turner was, once again, a big star, one of the best performers of the huge stadium gig era.

Tina Turner made the greatest showbiz comeback ever. At 44, she had a five times platinum album, and led an all-conquering 177 show world tour

She was in a Mad Max movie, sang a James Bond theme. Tina was an unstoppable showbiz phenomenon, and an inspiration

Anna Mae Bullock from Nutbush, Tennessee, became one of musics biggest brightest stars, twice in one lifetime.

Nevil Shutes On the Beach warned us of nuclear annihilation. Its still a hot-button issue with a new play at the Sydney Theatre Company "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

ABC News The Conversation / By Alexander Howard, 23 Jul 23

.. the nuclear threat is still very much at the top of our collective mind.

The Sydney Theatre Company is staging the very first stage adaptation of Shutes novel On the Beach. And Oppenheimer, one of 2023s two most-hyped films, tells the story of the man referred to as the father of the atomic bomb.

Journalist Gideon Haigh calls On the Beach arguably Australias most important novel important in the sense of confronting a mass international audience with the defining issue of the age.

British-born Shute emigrated in 1950 to Australia, where he lived outside Melbourne. As well as writing novels, he worked as an aeronautical engineer.

  • :: Slowdive on Arvos with Ruby and Al

Vocalist and guitarist Neil Halstead and drummer Simon Scott of the legendary British shoegaze band Slowdive dropped by Arvos with Ruby and Al ahead of their sold out show at the Enmore Theatre last Friday night. They spoke about their upcoming album everything is alive, whether their status as one of THE shoegaze bands affected the process behind recording it, and how the chaos of the pandemic drove them to create something hopeful.

Slowdive, alongside groups like the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, are world-renowned as belonging to the first wave pioneering 1990s shoegaze bands. Upholding their lofty status wasnt, however, a concern for the five-piece when crafting their new album.

I think we have enough trouble agreeing as a band what sounds good without worrying too much about what other people are going to think.

The group began writing everything is alive, which is their fifth studio album since they began in 1989, on the minimal foundations of a series of repurposed electronic demos Neil had made for a side-project.

Once everyone gets involved it takes on its own sort of life. Thats the fun part I suppose, seeing where your ideas go. And trying not to edit too much too early, so that you can allow things to kind of go in their own direction.

Over three years at home and in the studio (the same s...

The Long Story, a new book uncovers neglected stories of Australias interracial history "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

Throughout history, major social and political events have impacted and shaped our interracial relations. Yet often the historical narrative is told through limited perspectives and these important interracial events are left untold.

Co-author and Member for Moreton, Graham Perrett teams up with Queenslander and proud Murri Man, Wayne Long, to launch a new book and tell The Long Story

A child of both Aboriginal ancestry (Kamilaroi Nation) and Chinese heritage, Wayne Long has lived in the intersection of cultures and talks in the book about how major events, like the Voice to Parliament, can impact the personal and political experience of our country. The Long Story illustrates Australias brutal history of injustice, blood and tragedy, but through this, many incredible stories of resilience.

Charles Sturt University media spoke with MP Graham Perrett about the importance of this book in telling an accurate story of Australian history and how understanding Australias historical relationship with race sheds light on current issues.

The Albanese government has released Australias inaugural national wellbeing framework, Measuring What Matters.

The framework includes 50 key indicators and aims to track societal and economic progress more effectively. Themes of Healthy, Secure, Sustainable, Cohesive and Prosperous underpin the framework, which will be in addition to more traditional measurements like GDP, employment, and inflation.

The government has welcomed feedback on the framework, which will evolve over time with the aim of providing better societal and economic indicators to improve the wellbeing of all Australians.

But advocates in the social services sectors say more focus needs to be placed on addressing poverty in Australia.

Post fire recovery of Pencil Pines at Lake Mackenzie "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

Back in 2016, lightning storms ignited a number of fires in central and western lutruwita/ Tasmania, which turned into large scale events that threatened the core refugia of Gondwanan vegetation, particularly the largest stands of the endemic conifer Athrotaxis cupressoides (Pencil Pines). Pencil Pines are already limited to very small areas of Tasmania. Burnt Pencil Pines are unlikely to recover given their slow growth, limited seedling establishment and projections of increased fire weather and lightning ignitions associated with drier soils.

Although the climate of western Tasmania has not changed very much, as yet, as a result of global warming, the incidence of dry lightning strikes has increased markedly from last century to the present. Therefore these type of lightning caused fires are expected to increase. This could put the very survival of Pencil Pine communities at risk.

One of the fires that created greatest concern started near Lake Mackenzie, on the north western end of the Central Plateau. Significant areas of Pencil Pines were burnt.

With scattered groves of Pines burnt, and unlikely to recover without some form of intervention, what are our options?

Seven years on from the fires, research from the University of Tasmania, shows what is being done to assist recovery.

Called Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) Bushfire Recovery: Lake Mackenzie Rehabilitation Trials Data Post-fire restoration of Pencil Pines, the primary goal of this trial was to identify best-practice methods (interventions) for restoring burnt pencil pine ( ) stands. Five study sites were selected around the Lake (three of which were burnt in 2016). Monitoring was carried out from 2018 until 2022.

Three types of intervention were undertaken to consider how recovery could be supported: direct sowing of seed, planting seedlings and protecting natural seedling growth.

Thirty-five plots were established in March 2019, to assess the practicality and effectiveness of restoring pencil pines by protecting naturally germinated seedlings from herbivores. Such seedlings were only found near living adult pencil pines, and mostly on Sphagnum.

Plots were situated where a seedling, or group of seedlings, could be enclosed within tree guard in situ. For half of these plots, tailored tree guards were constructed using stainless-steel mesh and aluminium tubes to create a perimeter impervious to vertebrate herbivores. Remaining plots were left as open controls

300 plots were established in March 2019, in which seeds were sown directly into the field. These plots were treated in...

Fire escape plan a must "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Victorias fire services are calling on households to develop or review their Home Fire Escape Plans.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and CFA respond to more than 3000 residential fire incidents across the state each year, many of which are preventable.

House fires move fast and can fill your home with smoke in a matter of minutes. They can be devastating and fatal. While the dangers of fire are very real, there is a lot you can do to protect your family and your home.

Fire Rescue Commissioner Gavin Freeman, AFSM said that families and households spending time at home this weekend should take the opportunity to make a plan together, practice it, and ensure they are well prepared.

During winter, we spend much more time inside, out of the cold, so its important to establish or revisit your Home Fire Escape Plan, Commissioner Freeman said.

Nobody wants to think about a fire in the home, but sadly in Victoria every year, on average 18 lives are lost in preventable house fires.

Knowing how to quickly exit your home in case of an emergency could mean the difference between life and death, and it is crucial that all members of the household, including children, know what to do in the event of a house fire.

CFA Chief Fire Officer Jason Heffernan said winter is a good time for Victorian residents to re-educate themselves on their Home Fire Escape Plan.

Whether you are a homeowner or renting, you should have a plan in place and practice it regularly, deciding on a safe place to meet, like the letterbox, should an emergency arise, CO Heffernan said.

To keep your loved ones safe, it is essential smoke alarms are installed in all bedrooms, living areas and hallways so everyone in the property is alerted to a fire.

The safest plan is to get down low to stay out of the smoke, close nearby doors to slow down the spread of the fire, and call triple zero once youre safely outside.

For more information on how to make a Home Fire Escape Plan, visit frv.vic.gov.au or cfa.vic.gov.au.

When making your Home Fire Escape Plan, remember:

Know what to do if a fire occurs. Whether you are a homeowner or renter, you should have a home fire escape plan in place.

Practice your plan for when there is an emergency with your whole household.

You cant escape if you have deadlocked your doors.

Tips for when there is a fire:

Get out and stay out or get down low and stay out of the smoke.

If it is safe, close doors to slow down the spread of fire and smoke.

Alert other people on your way out.

Meet at a safe place, such as the letterbox out the front of your home.

Call triple zero from a mobile phone or a neighbours phone.

Supermarkets meet Clean-up Notices obligations "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

The Clean-up Notices required the supermarkets to address the potential fire and pollution risk posed by 15 soft plastic stockpiles accumulated during the REDcycle soft plastics collection program. Photo supplied

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) say that Coles and Woolworths have met their immediate obligations under the Clean-up Notices issued by the Authority, with more than 5,000 tonnes of soft plastics moved to safe storage.

The notices required the supermarkets to address the potential fire and pollution risk posed by 15 soft plastic stockpiles accumulated during the REDcycle soft plastics collection program.

EPA Executive Director Steve Beaman said having the retailers move these stockpiles to a safe and lawful location has been a priority. Our inspections confirmed waste from 15 sites has been removed, with the majority going to a waste facility in Orchard Hills for storage.

We will continue to monitor the progress of the supermarkets under the Clean-up Notices as they consider options for recycling and reprocessing the material.

Say No to alcohol "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Geelong community groups and young people are helping parents say no to alcohol for people under 18.

Meli, Communities That Care (CTC), Barwon Health, and the Youth Advisory Group of nine young people collaborated on the campaign, which featured a video with the I Need You to Say No message.

Meli chief executive Grant Boyd said the campaign used the video, posters, social media, and educational resources to reduce the consumption of alcohol by young people under 18.

This campaign has been driven by young people urging parents and other trusted adults to step up to the challenge of saying no, which is not always easy in our society, he said.

Every day at Meli, we see the impacts of alcohol on young people and families, which is why this campaign is so important.

Parents can play a big role in influencing young peoples attitudes to drinking as well as their access to alcohol.

Barwon Healths Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol Services clinical director Professor Steve Moylan said young people were more at risk of alcohol-related harm as their brains developed.

Under-age drinking can lead to risky behaviour and injuries, mental ill-health and lead to harmful alcohol use later in life, he said.

We hope this campaign will encourage parents to re-think providing young people with alcohol. The video is a great conversation starter for families.

CTC co-ordinator Louise McDonald said reducing alcohol at a young age and encouraging parents not to supply their children with alcohol was a priority area for the not-for-profit training company.

Getting information to parents is hard, she said.

We thought that if the messages came from the young people themselves, it would be more powerful and have more of an impact.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Live in Concert is swinging into Melbourne this year "IndyWatch Feed Melbourne"

Direct from Brooklyn and for the first time in Australia, the Academy Award-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is swinging into Melbourne for an electrifying Live in Concert experience this October.

Taking place on 21st October 2023 at The Plenary, Convention Centre, youll be able to witness the epic film soundtrack brought to life in an incredible fusion of orchestral, turntables, and electronic music, performed live alongside the big-screen action.

Keep up with the latest in local news and entertainment here.

This one-of-a-kind show premiered in New York in March 2023, leaving the audience in awe with its unique blend of live orchestra, DJ prowess, and electrifying visuals. Imagine watching the action-packed animation on a massive HD screen while a 32-piece orchestra, led by conductor Vanessa Scamell, and DJ Total Eclipse from the legendary hip-hop collective, the X-Ecutioners, perform the iconic film score, fusing elements of orchestral with turntables and live DJ, and electronics for a rare and bold live experience.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced us to Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, who discovers the boundless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where anyone can be a hero. The films thrilling score, composed by the acclaimed Daniel Pemberton, blends heroism and resilience with an infusion of hip-hop vibes. The soundtrack includes incredible contributions from industry heavyweights like Post Malone, Lil Wayne, Jaden Smith, and Nicki Minaj, making it a true auditory feast.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of my favourite scores Ive ever written. Utilising a full orchestra, crazy electronics and unbelievable turntable scratching techniques amongst a million other things, it is so technically complex I never thought wed ever be able to actually reproduce it in a live concert, but somehow, we have, said Pemberton on the project.

The original Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman and written by Phil Lord and Rothman, wowed critics and audiences alike with its innovative visual style, captivating story, and standout voice acting. And now, with the highly anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, having hit theatres in June 2023, the Spider-Verse phenomenon continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

New video celebrates alpine peatland protection "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

North East Victoria is home to more than 2,000 hectares of Alpine Peatlands, an endangered ecological community listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999).

Alpine Peatlands, or Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and Associated Fens, are a priority ecological community for the North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA) supported through a five-year project to protect and enhance these unique environments.

This five-year, cross-regional project is coordinated by the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Project Coordinating Committee (VAPCC) and delivered in collaboration across three CMA regions (North East, East Gippsland and West Gippsland) with Parks Victoria. This project is funded by the Australian Governments National Landcare Program.

Now a new video has been released at https://youtu.be/QmyxVs7lXHA, developed by North East CMA to mark completion of the Cross Regional Victorian Alpine Peatlands Protection Project. Partners in the video are Parks Victoria, East Gippsland CMA, West Gippsland CMA and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation.

Alpine Peatlands are crucial for providing habitat and for modulating water-flow and maintaining hydrology of surrounding environments. The health of alpine peatlands influence the health of water further down the catchment and are therefore important for the whole community.

Alpine Peatlands occur across alpine, sub-alpine and montane landscapes of Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the ACT in permanently wet areas, such as along streams, drainage lines, valley edges and valley floors. The key to peatland or bog formation is a good supply of groundwater and an impeded drainage system that keeps the water table at or near the surface. Under these conditions, the decomposition of organic materials is incomplete, eventually forming the peat that typically underlies the ecological community.

Throughout the project, the North East CMA has been joined by Parks Victoria and Alpine Resorts Victoria in implementing key actions across the region from the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Spatial Action Plan (2015), guided by the 2015 National Recovery Plan and the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Project Coordinating Committee.

Project activities include:

(i) Weed control, targeting high threat weeds of willows, soft rush and other introduced exotic grass species

(ii) Deer control and a deer control trial investigating the impact of different deer management approaches on peatland condition.

Earlier this year, Parks Victoria facilitated the gathering in the Victorian Alps, extending invites to members of the Victorian Alpine Peatlands Project Coordinating Committee (VAPPCC), Traditional Owner groups, and others workin...

Laneway bristles with art "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

The work of local photographers is on show at an outdoor art gallery in Dennys Place off Little Malop Street.

Geelong photographer Jane Fitzgeralds Laneway Photography Gallery exhibit features works from local artists, supported by a City of Greater Geelong COVID-19 Arts, Culture and Heritage Recovery Grant of $7000.

This exhibition showcases 12 local photographic artists, including a mix of emerging and established photographers.

The exhibition was organised and curated by Jane Fitzgerald and printed by Aeterna Lab Geelong and on UV and weather resistant, non-toxic PVC free, heavy metal free and phthalate free fabric. Local photographers Jonathan Dredge and Josh De Hoog have installed the prints.

I approached some of the local photographers on Instagram because I saw images of theirs that fitted with the look and theme I wanted for this exhibition, Ms Fitzgerald said.

I encouraged some of the photographers to exhibit work outside their usual genre and the shadows seem to be a natural theme across some of the images.

Im so enjoying watching people wander the laneway looking at art, as they go about everyday life, this makes me happy.

Music photographer Lucinda Goodwins edgy still life piece, amazing black and white street images from Michael Chambers and fine art printer Michael De Beens images from his Japan travels are among the artworks on display.

Creativity and Culture chair councillor Melissa Cadwell said the local arts scene is experiencing a revitalisation.

By bringing photography outdoors, Laneway Photography Gallery is for all newcomers to photographic art, local residents including people who might not otherwise get the chance to see this kind of art and tourists alike, she said.

I encourage visitors to find out more each of these skilled artists through the information QR codes below their work.

Now Ive been looking for a package quote to do my roof and gutters and have been quoted $1975.00 for what he believes to be another 6 hrs work. So over $200 p/hr rate to pressure wash?? A thought on the tardiness of a former prime minister....... "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

Liberal Opposition backbench MP for Cook & former prime minister Scott Morrison does not appear to have returned to Australia as yet.

Having departed this country around 16-18 June 2023 and, studiously remained overseas for the tabling and publication of the damning Report of the Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme, he is running out of reasons to continue to avoid his own and the national electorate in his 5th week of a holiday jaunt.

Both houses of parliament resume sitting on Monday 31 July so perhaps he will have found some courage tucked away along with a souvenir from the Acropolis in a pocket of his suitcase and will be back in Canberra by then.

A reminder of how unfondly he has been regarded for many years now.....

Promises, promises "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action wants your feedback on the draft of Victorias Bushfire Management Strategy, which will set the vision for bushfire management in Victoria for the next 10 years.

You can find the strategy here.

And you can make a submission here.

The strategy comes in three parts: people safety, conservation, and Aboriginal management.

Theres plenty of reasonable stuff in this document. Nothing wrong with this aim, for example:

To achieve genuine ecosystem resilience and positive nature conservation outcomes, the sector will integrate this improved understanding into decision making. This includes identifying and protecting environmental values and assets during on-ground operations and implementing on[1]ground programs to manage increased threats to environmental values (such as weeds and pests) resulting from the applied fire regime.

The problem with the document might be that there are too many future tense sentences in it. The sector will improve its knowledge of fire regimes The sector will continue to monitor The sector will ensure the scale of each target is appropriate The sector will supportadaptive management The sector willcontinue to improvewill optimisewill ensure And so on.

A reader already sceptical about the sectors monitoring and adaptive management record will not be impressed by the promise that things will continue to improve. Promises like this have been made for years, and its hard to be impressed by the results.

Lets recall the Auditor Generals 2021 report:

DELWP advised us that it cannot guarantee the protection of all threatened species given:

  • current funding levels
  • scientific constraints around how species respond to threats and actions to control these in the wild, particularly in a time of climate change
  • the long-term lag effects on Victorias biodiversity of over 200 years of colonisation.

Lack of funding, lack of knowledgeConservationists have been banging on about these things for years.

Still, if you have the time, it might be worth having a go. We recommend you ask, what is there in the strategy to guarantee that the funding levels identified by the Auditor General as inadequate will be brought up to scratch?

The consultation closes on August 20

My Place with Donna Robertson "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Donna Robertson loves helping those in need with food through her role as a food services manager at genU Business Enterprises. She speaks with Jena Carr about why she calls Geelong home.

What is your connection to Geelong?

I first came to Geelong in 1996 when I went to The Gordon for the schooling component of my chef apprenticeship. At the time, I was living up on the Murry River in Corowa, New South Wales.

I would come to Geelong seven weeks a year to complete my schooling. During this time, I made friends, and once I was a qualified chef in October 1999, I decided to move here and find work.

Over the past 23 years, I have worked in many Geelong hospitality businesses in various positions such as chef, catering and events supervisor, and assistant manager.

During this time, I have learnt many transferable skills that I now use every day in my current role as food services manager at genU.

What do you like about where you live?

Geelong is home for me, my husband and two sons, 13 and 9, who love it here. Although we dont have much family support here, we have a fabulous support network around us.

The boys play football and cricket locally in Highton and enjoy the beaches we are so close to.

What, if anything, would you change about where you live?

As much as I love it here, we need to do better in the inclusiveness space.

We need to offer more support to those in need, which includes the disadvantaged, homeless, ageing and disabled populations.

Where is your favourite place to spend time?

In the kitchen with my family, as I love creating new dishes with my boys. They both love to cook and explore new foods.

I am also known for creating amazing grazing boards for when friends and family visit.

What is something people may not know about you?

I lived and worked in London for two years, from 2005 to 2006.

What do you like about your work?

I love that every day is different and that we make a positive difference in peoples lives.

My current position at genU involves overseeing eight businesses, including four canteens, two cafes, a commercial catering kitchen and a food processing kitchen with my team.

We currently offer supported employment to more than 60 NDIS clients and 226 for all genU.

My day can start between 5am and 9am, and I could be in the kitchen making sandwiches or peeling potatoes on the floor.

The conversations you have with our staff are engaging and encouraging, and its great to help them set goals and watch them strive so hard to reach them.

Some goals might be as simple as making a sandwich or as bold as travelling overseas. I truly love everything about genU and what we do.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It is really important to support local businesses. Local business means local j...

UK Frankie Valli show comes to Australia "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Winner of Londons Best Tribute for its celebration of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, UK show Frankies Guys comes to the Geelong Arts Centre on Friday, August 4.

Featuring some the West Ends best and brightest, with cast credits including musicals such as Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You and Footloose, Frankies Guys offers a night of feelgood entertainment for all music lovers.

Australian producer Sam Klinger said the show was jam packed with hits, such as Oh What a Night, Sherry, Walk Like a Man and Cant Take My Eyes Off of You.

Their music really is timeless, and I think thats demonstrated by the fact that there was a cover of their song Beggin in the last year or so that made the top 40 charts, he said.

After touring the UK for 10 years, the show made its Australian premiere this week at Port Macquarie, which Klinger said was particularly touching for the casts British-Australian star Jonathan Whitlow.

Its the first time in a very long time hes been back in Australia, so we actually introduced a Frankie Valli Home.

Its really something special. I saw it for the first time (at the Port Macquarie show), and it actually evoked quite a bit of emotion for me.

Klinger said the audience had a blast at the first Australian show, and he looked forward to bringing it to audiences around Australia during the five-week tour.

While its a tribute show, its not one youre going to see down at the local pub; this is a theatrical, high-end concert, he said.

Theres lots of audience involvement, theyre very much part of the show, which is great.

Migration on the rise "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Regional migration is on the rise.

The combination of affordability, lifestyle, and a growing range of services on par with our capital cities is convincing more and more people to make the change.

Over the 12 months to March this year, Victoria attracted the largest share of metropolitan residents moving to regional areas.

More people left a city capital to call regional Victoria home (43 per cent) than all other states and territories, bar New South Wales, combined.

Geelong is at the forefront of this shift, which accelerated during the pandemic but shows no signs of slowing.

This social and economic boom has seen Geelong add the most jobs in larger regional Australia cities over the past three years.

Health care and social assistance, construction, professional and scientific services led the way in growing our jobs base by an average of 5.3 per cent per annum over this period.

This explosion has seen our population increase to about 280,000 people.

However, the trend of people moving to the regions and especially Geelong will only continue.

Within 20 years, we are forecast to top the major milestone of 400,000.

Managing this growth, and its associated impacts, is a challenge for all levels of government.

The jobs, the health services, transport network, childcare and education facilities, recreation and cultural experiences there is so much to consider.

But the first question people ask before considering moving somewhere is where will I live? It always starts with, and comes back to, housing.

Councils long-term Settlement Strategy aims to accommodate our coming growth through an even mix of greenfield development and urban infill.

The Armstrong Creek area is about one-third of its way to its potential population of 60,000.

After that, expansion in the next two decades will be directed to the Northern and Western Geelong Growth Areas.

Alongside this, there are many opportunities to create additional housing in existing suburbs.

Central Geelong is a major focus. The CBD will be a more vibrant and active area if more residents call it home.

Directing more medium and higher density housing stock around existing train stations is also a strategic aim.

We understand building controls will need to be in line with community expectations for their neighbourhood.

But having a higher concentration of people living close to public transport will limit traffic congestion, and provide more diversity in our housing market.

The addition of more apartments will be important for housing affordability, creating more entry points for people to purchase their own property.

Through consultation with local authorities and the community, we want to ensure a suitable mix of housing is available for existing and incoming residents.

Audis RS 6 is almost too much car "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

Strewth! Audis RS 6 Avant is formidable. In fact, its almost too much car correction, wagon.

Its right up there in terms of the high-performance stuff that weve driven over the years and should not be underestimated.

I remember driving its little brother, the RS 4 Avant, on the track at Sydneys Eastern Creek, one hand on the wheel, drifting effortlessly around a left-hander.

It was an amazing experience and I can only imagine RS 6 would be even more rewarding driven flat out in an environment that can accommodate its performance potential.

Competitors include the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 but they cost more and dont offer the practicality of a wagon. SUVs need not apply.

STYLING

Sitting low to the ground, with pumped out guards and fat rubber, the look is understated, but youd have to be Blind Freddy not to recognise this a vehicle that should be given a wide berth.

The wider single frame grille combines a black gloss finish with an RS-specific honeycomb structure, edged by arresting air inlets that sit below the standard HD Matrix headlights (with front and rear dynamic indicators).

Audi laser lighting technology further enhances the sophisticated lighting system by doubling the range of vision when travelling at speeds of more than 70km/h.

Distinctive 22-inch Audi Sport alloys are standard, with the striking red brake calipers and 285/30 series Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 rubber.

RS 6 Avant sits at the pointy end of the RS performance range, priced from $232,200 plus on-roads.

Its partner in crime, the RS 7 Sportback, which shares the same twin turbo V8 drivetrain, is another $8000.

Its a lot but still considerably less than the S8 that we drove recently (our Lotto car) which is a nosebleed $273,000 and not as quick.

Several option packs are also available, including a sensory package, the carbon and black styling package and the RS Dynamic package plus (with ceramic brakes and raised 305 km/h speed limit).

Our test vehicle was fitted with the $2900 RS Design Package, with $1700 Inlays in carbon twill and $700 gloss black Audi rings and badges, bringing the total price to $237,500.

Exterior highlights include the black exterior styling package, panoramic glass sunroof and metallic paint.

Inside, the cabin is upholstered in Nappa leather, while the RS sport front seats are finished in Valcona leather and feature full electric adjustment, heating and lumbar support.

Comfort items include convenience key, electric tailgate, electric/heated/folding mirrors, privacy glass, power-assisted door closure and electric steering column adjustment.

A selection of eight exterior colours are available with the addition of a new crystal effect paint in Sebring black, as well as a striking matt effect paint finish via Audi exclusive.

After completing Exercise Sea Explorer 2023, and a short stay at Townsville, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Canberra-class landing helicopter dock (LHD) ship HMAS Adelaide (III) (L01), along with the Bay-class landing ship HMAS Choules (L100), have again been in waters off Bowen. They have been the launching points for various amphibious landing exercises on the Bowen foreshore, as well as multiple helicopter insertions of personnel and equipment into the Bowen township.

Electrify Bass Coast by Werner Theinert "IndyWatch Feed Gippsland"

First published in the Bass Coast Post*

Were currently in the midst of a worldwide renewable energy revolution which is also taking place in our own national electricity market.  Because of our vast solar and wind resources, we have the opportunity to lead the world in developing a renewable energy economy.

One of the most influential figures in this revolution has been Saul Griffith, a Wollongong lad who recently returned to Australia after doing some amazing work in the USA. Hes one of the lead influencers in the recent release of the Inflation Reduction Act in the USA and the recent inclusion of renewables and hydrogen in both the state and federal budgets.

His book The Big Switch (about rewiring Australia) and his Quarterly essay The Wires That Bind (electrification and community renewal) are essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the future of sustainable energy in Australia.  He explains where we are now, where we will be in the future, and what we must do to get there.

The two videos on the home page of his electrify2515 website are also a great introduction to understanding how we can reduce carbon dioxide emissions as a community, and how we can also save a lot of money on the way.  For further details I would recommend the home page of the Rewiring Australia website.

The vision is to replace our current domestic gas-consuming appliances (when they require replacing) with more efficient renewables-powered electric appliances.  For industry, the aim is to change over major industrial processes so that well be exporting green steel and green aluminium instead of iron ore, coal, bauxite and alumina.

When thinking about your next appliances, think about the total cost of the fuels you will use to power those appliances during their lifetime their true cost not just the upfront cost. The biggest savings come from efficient electric appliances using rooftop solar.
