Taking the concept of tag to a whole new level, Geelongs beloved laser skirmish venue has reopened with new owners and a brand-new home this July.

In a blow to the local community, Next Level Skirmish announced its closure back in April this year, citing the business was up for sale if anyone wished to purchase it for use at a new location (you can read about that here).

As you embark on your own individual journey through the album, prepare to unlock the deepest recesses of your own being.

War Of Being has been all encompassing for us since late 2019.  After I returned home  from filming P O R T A L S I found myself in such a deeply introspective headspace. The scale of work and reward from that project kind of set this up to be inevitable, says TesseracT bassist Amos Williams.

We simply had to try and see how far we could take a concept album with TesseracT.  Within these songs the band has given life to the themes and ideas that are personified within the characters of The Strangeland story. Its certainly been a catharsis and a way for me to explore the internal dissonance.

Didirri openly explores subjects, questions and themes we are encouraged to avoid. Holding true to his mission to make music for lovers and over thinkers, Didirris uninhibited lyrics tug at raw nerves, while his charming melodies soothe hearts and minds.

Caught in the Act is a labour of love during the lockdown periods in Australia. I have put so much of myself into these songs and really dedicated my heart to this album, Didirri says.

Nuclear power should not form part of Australias plans to reach net zero emissions because it is too expensive and slow, according to the final report of a project that models how Australia might meet its 2050 climate target.

The Net Zero Australia report, a partnership between major academic institutions and the management consultancy Nous Group, says the federal government has a major role to play in accelerating all options that could make a material contribution to achieving net zero.

The release of the report comes days after the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, ramped up calls for nuclear power in Australia and a debate about removing the legislative ban on nuclear power in Australia.

The report includes major investment in batteries, solar, onshore wind, pumped hydro and transmission. Among renewable options, offshore wind was found to have the most uncertain pipeline, with the report concluding first power from offshore wind projects needed to occur in 2030.

But the report concludes nuclear power should not be factored in to net zero plans and states that to reduce renewable targets in the belief that nuclear will be deployed later at scale would create a material risk of not achieving net zero, or doing so at an excessive cost.

Richard Bolt, principal at Nous Group, said: Nuclear power should not be in our plans, because its too expensive and slow. .

Two casino centred businesses will have to come up with a collective total of $450 million  in penalty payments over two years after AUSTRAC launched civil penalty proceedings against them for breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act).

The Court also ordered Crown to pay AUSTRACs costs.

Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth (Crown) have been ordered to pay up by the Federal Court of Australia.

The order comes after Crown and AUSTRAC (the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre) filed joint submissions with the Federal Court of Australia in May 2023 for the payment of $450 million in instalments over two years.

Detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse

AUSTRAC is the Australian Government agency responsible for detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal abuse of the financial system to protect the community from serious and organised crime.

Through regulation, and enhanced intelligence capabilities, AUSTRAC collects and analyses financial reports and information to generate financial intelligence.

As part of the settlement, Crown admitted that it operated in contravention of the AML/CTF Act, including that Crown Melbourne and Crown Perths AML/CTF programs were not based on appropriate risk assessments, did not have appropriate systems and controls to manage their risks, and were not subject to appropriate oversight by their Boards and senior management.

The serious nature of the breaches

The serious nature of the breaches meant that Crown allowed high-risk activities to take place in its casinos, without intervention, on an ongoing basis. For example:

• Crown continued a business relationship with a major casino junket operator until 2021, although being aware of allegations the operator was connected to organised crime.
• Crown failed to appropriately monitor billions of dollars in transactions (including international payment flows) which impacted its ability to identify and disrupt possible suspicious activity, and to report suspicious matters to AUSTRAC and law enforcement.
• From March 2016 to December 2018, there were at least 75 suspicious incidents involving a total of around $23 million in cash, in a private gaming room which Crown Melbourne gave one casino junket operator exclusive access to.

Substantial and ongoing efforts

However, in settling these proceedings, AUSTRAC took into account the substantial and ongoing efforts undertaken by Crown to address the AML/CTF failings which were the subject of these proceedings.

Last year, Wanderer Festival was a welcome beacon for those tired of the overbearing joy the pandemic gave us all (jks, obvs). It was a festival for all, conveniently located halfway between Sydney and Melbourne while also being a three-hour road trip from Canberra. Set in the scenic coastal town of Pambula Beach, the three-day festival was a huge success, so much so that it was able to grow and return.

Yet another festival-brainchild from Simon Daly, who has given us Falls and The Lost Lands, Wanderer offered a diverse program, wrapped up in an event that aimed to be as green as possible. This year, these same ideas are taken even further, and we caught up with Daly to learn more about what to expect.

Miles Jansens naturally despondent vocals uphold the groups sound, with his nonchalant demeanour and deadpan delivery maintaining the angst and boredom of UK garage punk, whilst simultaneously channelling adding an adjacent playful larrikin wit.

The just concluded NATO summit in Vilnius ended by producing little, except to reveal uncertainty and lack of member unity. This was supposed to be a stage-managed affair, showing the world solid support for the Kyiv side of the war in Ukraine, and a determined launch of NATO presence in Asia. Neither was delivered.

Part of the problem was Kyiv leader Zelenskyys dig at NATO for not permitting Ukraine to join it at once. NATOs problem is that public support for backing him is weak, and NATO members are under political pressure. They are compelled to at least make what they do look good.

Besides waning public support, especially in Europe, for the war, there is the problem that Kyiv is supposed to meet the supposed democratic credentials for membership. This is awkward, when a range of political parties have been banned, political critics are being arrested, and pro-Nazi groups elevated. This is not a good look and NATO would have considerable difficulty selling it.

Then there is failure of the present offensive on the battlefield. As many as 26,000 soldiers in the past month, and most of its tanks, personnel carriers, and other advanced equipment. There is speculation that Zelenskyy knows he is not going to have a chance of winning without NATO putting boots into Ukraine and escalating to the use of nuclear weapons, and this is what he is ultimately pushing towards. In doing so, he is making NATO nervous and building divisions within it.

The decision of the United States to supply Ukraine with cluster bombs is unpopular and creates more difficulty for NATO.

There are diplomatic headaches and heated scientific debates after Japan revealed plans to dump the wastewater its been using to cool the Fukushima nuclear power plant  in the Pacific. 

Sea and ground water has been used to cool the damaged reactors, and now theres about 1.3 million tonnes of that sitting in tanks while the Japanese government and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) figure out what to do with it.

They want to release the wastewater into the ocean  diluting all the cancer-causing nuclear fission products out of it  such as caesium, which can build up in muscles, strontium-90 which can build up in bones and iodine-129 which can build up in the thyroid.

. journalist Nic Maclellan, a Melbourne-based correspondent with Islands Business Magazine, tells The Detail.

The Pacific Islands Forum has been especially critical, and appointed an independent scientific panel to investigate safety issues around the proposed dumping, he says.

The panel has raised a series of issues around the quality of the sampling, the cost of the sampling, the cost of the programme over decades, the maintenance of safety sampling and the fact that they really dont know whether Japan can maintain the quality that will stop other radioactive isotopes being released into the ocean.

There are also questions over whether the wastewater dump is a breach of the Treaty of Rarotonga, signed in 1985, which created a South Pacific nuclear-free zone.

It was largely about nuclear weapons, but article seven talks about preventing nuclear waste dumping. 

Japan has been acting as if these safety concerns are not serious and its taken a lot of pressure for Japan to be dragged kicking and screaming into addressing questions, many of which are still unresolved, Maclellan says.

The Federal Court of Australia has dismissed the legal challenge seeking fair and equal access to the age pension for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Proud Wakka Wakka man Uncle Dennis* brought the case in which the Federal Government faced court for the first time in connection with its failure to close the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous people.

Despite recognising the ongoing gap in life expectancy, the Court did not accept that Australia's racial discrimination laws should give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people earlier access to the age pension.

It comes on the same day as The Closing the Gap Annual Data Compilation Report found that Australia is still not on track to meet the target of equal life expectancy by 2031. No progress towards this target was reported since the previous year.

The Albanese government has a responsibility to address age pension inequality out of court, by lowering the pension age for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The current pension age of 67 years does not account for the stark differences in life expectancy and health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people do not have the same opportunity to retire and receive support through the age pension as other Australians. Equal access to the pension would also support several Closing the Gap targets.

Uncle Dennis brought the case with the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service and the Human Rights Law Centre, with support from DLA Piper.

Proud Wakka Wakka man Uncle Dennis said:

Im frustrated with this white system, its not a system of the land. It doesnt give us a say. White people are living longer because they havent lost what we have lost. As an Aboriginal man, Ive seen too many of my people dying at a very early age. We are lucky to get to 50 years old. This case was about telling the truth, and asking the Government to work together with us, to give our people the same chance in life as everyone else.  

Things will never get better unless the Government closes the gaps it created. We didnt have a problem, a problem came here. Our language, our culture and our identity comes from here, it doesnt come from another country. Truth, justice and accountability are important.

Nerita Waight, CEO at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service said:
Everyone deserves to live a life with dignity but this is not possible for our communities who have been left with no choice but to live shorter lives in poverty because of decades of racist colonial policies and a continued lack of investment and change in the systems, institutions and policies that affect their lives day in day out.

Michael Shiloh had been studying tuberculosis for about two decades when he started wondering about a seemingly basic question: What makes people with TB cough? This is the diseases hallmark symptom and a main mode of transmission, but despite training as an infectious disease physician and many years of probing the pathogen as a researcher, Shiloh realized that he didnt know. A quick search of the literature suggested that essentially nothing had been studied about it, at least not at the molecular level, he says.

Elucidating the role of cough in illness means first appreciating its role in health. Cough is one of these critical defensive processes that we have to clear the respiratory system, says Stuart Mazzone, a neuroscientist at the University of Melbourne. But it also contributes to disease spread, as research by Shiloh, now at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and others has described. And dysfunctional control of coughing resulting in too much coughing or not enough can cause serious health problems.
