Missed Opportunities Might Overshadow Welcome Budget Initiatives SACOSS - Justice, Opportunity and Shared Wealth for all South Australians

Thursday, 15 June 2023

Today's State Budget clearly will provide some welcome relief for hundreds of thousands of South Australians grappling with rising costs of living and housing - but the state government may have squandered an opportunity to make significant and meaningful change for the state's long-term benefit.

Middle East Eye strongly reviews The Palestine Laboratory Antony Loewenstein

My new book, The Palestine Laboratory, has been very positively reviewed in the UK-based outlet, Middle East Eye, by Long Road Magazine co-founder and journalist Patrick O. Strickland:

As the Israeli colonisation of Palestine plods forward at a breakneck pace and its own facade of democracy trembles, Loewensteins book stands out as a new addition to the pantheon of important works of political reportage about Israels role in the world, and what toll especially for Palestinians that role may take.

Israeli repressive tech invades our privacy Antony Loewenstein

A key section in my new book, The Palestine Laboratory, is on the role of Israeli spyware and hacking tools. Israeli company Cellebrite is a major player and it has a large, mostly unheralded presence in Australia. Declassified Australia recently ran my investigation into the companys role in Australia (alongside an edited book extract.)

Heres my interview with The Briefing podcast in Australia, conducted by Antoinette Lattouf, on Israeli spyware and serious questions about how such tools challenge the very concept of privacy:

Murder charges dropped over Simone Strobels 2005 death in Lismore National News Echonetdaily

Simone Strobel. Photo NSW Police.

The 2005 murder of German backpacker Simone Strobel at the Tourist Caravan Park in Lismore led to the extradition of her then boyfriend Tobias Moran (previously Suckfuell, he changed his name when he married) from Western Australia  on 27 July, 2022. He was charged with murder following a $1 million reward for information that led to a further investigation into the homicide of Simones suspected murder.

However, the charges have now been dropped by the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The naked body of 25 year old Ms Strobel was found on 17 February 2005 covered by palm fronds on a sports ground about 90 metres from the Tourist Caravan Park nowhere she had been staying with Mr Moran.

Activist blocking logging at Boambee State Forest near Coffs Harbour National News Echonetdaily

The koala in NSW is predicted to become extinct by 2050. In response the Great Koala National Park (GKNP) was proposed and in 2020 the Department of Planning Industry and Environments (DPIE) identified 55,000 hectares of State Forests for addition to existing National Parks as the Great Koala National Park.

At the time the North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) spokesperson Dailan Pugh welcomed the news saying Its a step in the right direction.

During the NSW election the Labor Party committed $80 million to establish the GKNP which would connect 175,000 hectares of state forests with existing national parks, creating a nature reserve of more than 300,000 hectares according to the ABC

However, in the meantime the NSW Forestry Corporation, a government agency, continues to heavily log areas that are proposed for the GKNP. Local communities have, and continue, to actively block their logging attempts of these native forests.

Boambee State Forest on the western edge of Coffs Harbour, that is proposed to be part of the GKNP, is today being blocked from logging by activist Ella, a forest protector, who is 100 feet up a tree in a secured tree-sit in Boambee State Forest.

Whistleblowing amendments an important first-step Media Release Archive | Human Rights Law Centre

Initial amendments to Australias federal public sector whistleblowing law, the Public Interest Disclosure Act, are a welcome step towards much-needed comprehensive reform, Australias leading whistleblowing experts said today.

The Human Rights Law Centre, Griffith University and Transparency International Australia said they were pleased the Government and all parties had listened to their joint submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee about significant problems with the initial bill, and made substantial improvements, now accepted by the Senate.

The Public Interest Disclosure Amendment (Review) Bill implements five aspects of reform one in full and four in part of the 21 elements outlined in Protecting Australias Whistleblowers: The Federal Roadmap, published last year by the three organisations.

Alongside the pending establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission,  Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus KC has committed to a second, wider phase of PID Act reform later this year. The government has also agreed to consult on the establishment of a whistleblower protection authority, with a discussion paper expected in the coming months.

Kieran Pender, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre, said:

By exposing human rights violations and government wrongdoing, whistleblowers make Australia a better place. But our whistleblower protections framework has fallen behind global standards; too often Australian whistleblowers are punished, not protected.

The Attorney-General is to be commended for resuming the journey towards a better whistleblowing framework, having led the initial enactment of the PID Act over a decade ago. We also applaud the work of the Greens and Coalition Senator Paul Scarr in helping ensure major improvements to this initial bill.

Clancy Moore, CEO of Transparency International Australia said:

These initial technical changes will start to breathe life back into federal whistleblower protections, in tandem with the Albanese Governments historic success in establishing Australias long awaited national anti-corruption commission.

We welcome the Governments commitment to fully overhaul the PID Act in coming months, and stand ready to assist with making protections simpler, more comprehensive and more consistent for anyone who blows the whistle.

Professor A J Brown, from Griffith Universitys Centre for Governance and Public Policy and Transparency International Australia board member said:

The Governments initial proposed carve-out of workplace conduct from whistleblower p...

Compliance: The Final Straw Forgotten Origin

Compliance: The Final Straw

By Steven Strong

15/06/23

The world of today is littered with half-truths, secret agendas, omissions and vilification for any who do not comply. The media and government agencies in all their multi-various forms no longer tolerate criticism, and any that complain will immediately be labelled a conspirator at best, and perhaps even a traitor. Wherever we look or listen it is all about blame, fear mongering and uncertainty.

The most recent roll-call of people, places and events on this planet is no less than tragic and most likely, lethal. It is all about making money and war, whether the spokesperson be Trump, Biden, Boris, Putin, Sco-Mo or Albanese, anything else is an incidental afterthought. Over the last decade wars have been waged in the Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Sudan and Yemen along with many other slightly less brutal internal conflicts, and all the way along humming in the background is the incessant talk of a global escalating conflict in Taiwan. At a global macro-level, the planet is echoing to the sounds of explosions and aggression, but believe it or not it gets no better at the personal and individual level. There is a silent turmoil and outrage taking place in every location and within all inhabitants of this planet that is far more dangerous and...

The lies of manufacturers and reviewers on Solid State Drives Corporate Australia

What's the BEST drive for gaming?

What drive is for 'content' creators, you know OnlyFans?

What SSD is best for workstation type loads?

Is 7300MB per second too slow for my games?

There are many misconceptions and 'lies' used to promote a manufacturer's wares, in order to be the sales kings of the industry.

It's a bit like reading an automotive manufacturer's fuel economy figures which can even be 30% less than in the real world.

Unfortunately many so called tech reviewers also have little to no idea, where all they're doing is supporting the advertising babble.

"What's the best gaming SSD in 2023?" could be answered in a simple line being: The same one as in 2020?

There are other more crucial specifications that are deliberately not focused on such as longevity, endurance, or even how long can the maximum speed be kept for, or a more real world use case scenario that 99% of the computing population does, where the speed of random read and writes are most important.

One of the better explanations out there is presented in this video:

Donald Trump case is about which faction of Wall Street will dominate The Pen

Contributed by Joe Montero

Donald Trump has finally been arrested and charged with criminal offenses and faces 37 counts of having committed federal crimes. This is over the theft of sensitive classified documents. Not surprisingly, Trump protests his innocence.

We most certainly enter a plea of not guilty, his lawyer said in the Miami court.

The defence rests on a counter accusation of victimisation. Trump alleges that he is the victim of a conspiracy hatched by the deep state, because he is popular, really won the last presidential election, and will win the one in 2024 easily. The implication of these allegations is that the deep state wants to stop him.

Its not as crazy as some would have it. In a nation where the faith in the political system and those who represent it has plummeted, Trumps words strike a chord. This is something that many of his critics with a voice to be heard conveniently ignore or fail to understand.

Photo from AP: Donald Trump in Miami

Trumps strategy is clever, and it might just propel him into the White house once again.

Another mistake made by many of his critics is the illusion that American law is the defender of justice and applies. Tell this to poor and non-white Americans. The yare the ones who feel the rough end of a justice system weighted against them.

Civil rights lawyer Alec Karakatsanis observed in an astringent Yale Law Journal piece a few years ago, that the USs brutal punishment bureaucracy unfairly disadvantages poor people and people of colour throwing them in prison for minor offenses and making a mockery of the idealistic idea that our criminal justice system is objective.

Donald Trump is in a good position to manipulate this. He has the privileges and the means to turn the law to his advantage, with his army of lawyers, deep pockets to buy justice, judges he appointed, control over the Republican Party, a cult following, and the political power...

Fans Jubilate As CAC Recorgnises Okumagba As President Of Super Eagles Supporters Club "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

SUPER EAGLES SUPPORTERS CLUB

LAGOS JUNE 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-It was wild jubilation over the weekend as members of the Super Eagles Supporters Club who stayed true to the clubs constitution and stayed away from the charade of an election purportedly held in Abuja some months back finally regained ownership and rulership of their Club via a Government backed Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) document of incorporation.

The document, a certified true copy of the certificate of incorporation dated and signed by the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission on the 9th of June 2023, affirmed the 10 Trustees of the club as being the bona-fide Owners and Directors while re-confirming the removal of the names of the dissidents who tried to hijack the day to day running of the club albeit, illegally.

For emphasis, the Trustees of SUPER EAGLES SUPPORTERS CLUB ABUJA incorporated on the 7th day of June, 2018 have been changed by resolution dated 6th day of June, 2023 as follows:

Joseph Ani, Chigozie Nnadi Chibuzor Anyaora , Obadiah Diji,

Nnaoma Chigbu,Dauda Alli, Dere Buwaghan, Olusola Oladejo, Owolabi Ayo ,Vincent Okumagba.

The certificate of Incorporation clearly stated. The likes of Johnson Dagana, Sam Pirar, Catherine Edum, Ibeakamma Okechukwu, Ijeoma Okechukwu and Olutoye Orishabiyi have now been removed from the list of the Trustees of the SESC, the certificate affirmed.

Vincent Okumagba is the Founder and President of SESC. He was FIFA Fan Leader for the World Cup, Qatar 2022. He left on a medical tourism abroad and some people tried to hijack the club from him. They have been suspended and normalcy has returned, Chief Chibuzor Anyaorah the Deputy Vice President of SESC explained to this reporter over the telephone.

It will be recalled that Vincent Okumagba only a fortnight ago, emerged as the 1st Vice Chairman of the African Football Supporters Association (AFSA) and the Delta born FIFA Fan Leader will be leading out 100 members of the Super Eagles Supporters Club to Australia and New Zealand for the FIFA Womens World Cup this summer to cheer the Super Falcons all the way at the Mundial.

Dumpling Wars "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Ukrainian blonde had the smell of trouble. She had perched herself, along with her mute friend, in a restaurant across from the famed South Melbourne Market. On arriving at the modish, glorious bit of real estate known as Tipsy Village, a Polish establishment famed for accented French cuisine, she shrieked: Why do you have Ruskie dumplings on your menu?

The Polish host, a man of butter mild manner and infinite tolerance, covered in stout glory, took it in his stride. That is what they are called where I come from and that is what we serve, Peter Barnatt stated with serene clarity. (Such wickedness! Such a radical disposition!) The blonde shrieking wonder continued to invest in the dumplings some satanic quality, as if each one had been a shell, soldier, a weapon massed and launched against her pristine homeland which she had, it seemed, abandoned. We would just like coffees, she demanded. His temper finally disturbed, the host insisted that, as the two were not intent on dining, might just as well leave.

In a luxurious huff, they exited. Such behaviour was fascinating for being irresolvable no dining establishment worth its salt and cutlery should ever change that aspect of things. But for them, the issue had been decided, a prejudice firmed up and solid.

Names on the menu are a signature of a restaurants worth. Besides, dishes do not invade countries in tanks nor bomb cities. The episode was also strikingly, amusingly moronic. Food had been made out as somehow guilty, disgusting, revolting all because of a name, an identity. The sin had moved in the dough, the mixture and the potatoes, dumplings with agency. The restaurateur was all the more guilty for hosting them.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the gastro-culture war on serving dishes with a Russian name, be it with hint, flavour, or substance, has been total. Hatred of the Kremlin has become bigotry towards the dish. In Madrid, Sergiy Skorokhvatov, himself Ukrainian and an owner of a restaurant called Rasputin serving both Russian and Ukrainian cuisine, sensed trouble. He ventured into the thorny world of online discussions to clarify the nature of what he was serving, which was considered wise given what has happening to other restaurants serving Russian fare.

This method of insurance was not full proof. I thought that changing things would help us, but then people started posting similar stuff about us Dont go to Russian restaurants and pictures of blown-up buildings in Ukraine.

When politics ventures into the field of gastronomy, imbecility is sovereign, its crown heavy. The French restaurant chain Maison de la Poutine, specialising in the combination of chips, cheese curds and gravy (poutine, you might say),...

E.K. Clark Accuses Okowa As Crafty, Ambitious, Spends Delta Money On Atiku "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

CLARK AND OKOWA

LAGOS JUNE 14TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark, on Wednesday, described the immediate-past governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa as a traitor and a very crafty man.

Clark also alleged that Okowa emerged as Atiku Abubakars running mate for the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after spending Delta States money on (Atikus) campaign.

He made the claim while appearing as a guest in an interview on Arise TVs Morning Show.

Clarke revealed that the 17 southern governors had, ahead of the 2023 presidential election, resolved to oppose any party that presented a northern presidential candidate in their primaries but Okowa went behind his colleagues to team up with Atiku.

Let me tell you the reason why the whole of southern Nigeria regards Okowa as a traitor. Let me tell you, he is a betrayer. Okowa volunteered to host a meeting of the 17 governors of the south. He provided accommodation for every one of them, Clark said.

He provided his secretariat, I know the person who was the secretary to the government at the time. They were there, they drafted the communique supervised by him and gave it to Akeredolu to read. He read it, then they all went to Lagos to confirm it, they went to Enugu to confirm it, not knowing that the same Okowa was spending our money for Atiku. I asked him in my letter to answer it.

He added, The delegates of the PDP primary, who did they vote for? Did they vote for Wike or Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom? They all voted for Atiku. So, he deceived his colleagues that we should produce the president from the south only to team up with Atiku to betray us. All the governors know about that. He is a man who is very ambitious, quiet and gives a wrong impression about himself that he is a very good man. Very crafty man.

As Nauru refugees are resettled, Albanese government must take responsibility for those abandoned in PNG Media Release Archive | Human Rights Law Centre

Reports that the last people remaining in Nauru under Australia's offshore detention policy would soon leave the island have been welcomed by the Human Rights Law Centre, with a warning that the same must be done for those languishing in Papua New Guinea.

While the number of people remaining in Nauru continues to fall as a result of transfers to Australia and resettlement in in other countries, more than 80 people previously detained on Manus Island remain trapped in PNG, many with serious health problems caused by years of detention, isolation and medical neglect. Fourteen people have died while subject to offshore detention. More than one hundred people previously detained on Manus Island were abandoned in PNG when the former Coalition government announced the end of Australias involvement in offshore processing in the country at the end of 2021.

While no new transfers to Nauru or PNG have occurred since 2014, the Albanese government has confirmed that it will maintain facilities for offshore processing in Nauru as a contingency.

Scott Cosgriff, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre said:

Across more than a decade in Nauru and PNG, the Australian Government has inflicted untold suffering upon people merely asking for safety. Evacuating Nauru is the right thing to do. Anything less than the same approach in relation to PNG is a profound failure of people whose dire circumstances were caused by this policy and whose lives remain in the Australian Government's hands.

The Australian Government bears the same responsibility to the people it sent to PNG as to the people it sent to Nauru.

Too often, the victims of this policy have been shunted from one agonizing limbo to another. Those now rebuilding their lives in Australia must be allowed to live in freedom, without crippling visa restrictions and with certainty about their future.

Every person sent to Nauru or PNG has lost years of their lives and been separated from loved ones because of the intentionally punitive policies of successive Australian governments. Uncertain visa status has been weaponised to further punish people who have been transferred, and compel them to accept resettlement in third countries or return home. Its time for the Albanese government to take responsibility and ensure every person can rebuild their lives in safety and freedom.

Make your Australian Parliament act to free Julian Assange - update "IndyWatch Feed World"

Further update, Wed 14 June: Still nothing said about Assange in Parliament (see Appendix 2 below). Although Julian Assange was not mentioned either in the House of Representatives or the Senate, yesterday, on Tuesday 13 June, there is still good reason to hope that, over the remaining 7 days, in which both houses sit (including today), we will hear members of the Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Support Group (Assange Support Group) speak loudly in support of Julian Assange and hold to account Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for his failure, thus far, to uphold his duty of care towards Julian Assange.

At 6pm on Monday 12 June, Kirsten Kennedy, on behalf of Queensland Greens (pictured above), responded to my email. Her response has been posted as a comment . From her reply and from the page linked to in that reply () I can see that Senator Allman-Payne speaks on behalf of all Greens Senators and Members of Parliament.

Nonetheless, I still think it critical that the case for Julian Assange be debated. From past experience, we can see that yet further statements in support of Assange or the presentation of more petitions will have zero impact on this government. Even a further Question Time question will only, at best, embarrass the Government momentarily, but do little to improve Assange's circumstances.

As I have written before, if, as has been the case up until now, Standing Orders don't allow supporters of Julian Assange to move a motion, such as my suggested motion of Monday 12 June (see Appendix 1 below), then move for a Suspension of those Standing Orders. Should the Speaker pronounce that procedural motion defeated, then, this time, call for a division so that the people of Australia will know - as Julian Assange faces extradition to the United States and imprisonment there for the rest of his life in conditions even worse than what he is now enduring at Belmarsh prison - which of their 'representatives' will have used their votes to preve...

AFTINET submission on the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies AFTINET

June 14, 2023: This agreement was signed at the WTO Ministerial meeting in June 2022 and is now being reviewed by the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT) before ratification by Australia. AFTINETs submission supports the recommendations of the Pacific Network on Globalisation (PANG), a network of community organisations in the Pacific Islands.

Our submission notes that the agreement is limited in scope and does not cover the full range of measures that contribute to overcapacity and overfishing. WTO negotiations on fisheries subsidies have, more recently, aimed to stop overfishing of all global fish stocks in line with the 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.6. This goal states that governments should prohibit and eliminate fisheries subsidies which contribute to overfishing  by 2020.

While the agreement addresses illegal and unregulated fishing it does not address subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing. These are to be addressed in further negotiations over the next four years.  As one of the main environmental and commercial threats comes from large trawling vessels conducting overfishing of fish stocks, including in international waters, this agreement fails to address those most responsible.

The submission also notes overfishing impacts most on small developing and least developed countries including the Pacific Islands which rely on small scale fishing and have the least technical and resource capacity for implementation of the agreement. This process is complicated and requires capacity and resources of developing country states, but the agreement does not provide guaranteed implementation resources for developing countries.

There are also some legal ambiguities which need to be clarified.

The submission re-asks the JSCOT to recommend that the Australian government

  • support speedy resumption of the negotiations for a more comprehensive agreement which will include rules that would prohibit subsidies that contribute to overcapacity and overfishing, and regulate the activities of large trawling vessels conducting subsidised overfishing of fish stocks, including in international waters
  • support mandatory assistance to developing and least developed countries for technical and capacity building to implement the more comprehensive agreement.
  • That the more comprehensive agreement include other appropriate provisions for developing countries, including longer implementation times
  • That in those negotiations t...

With her permission, Im posting it here because it deserves a wide readership.

Heres a teaser:

Today, it issuch a privilege to launch another masterpiece by Antony Lowenstein The Palestine Laboratory How Israel exports the technology of occupation around the world.

Even just reading out the title sends shivers down my spine. To think that Palestinians are being used as test subjects, as effectively guinea pigs for Israels military weaponry and technology of surveillance, espionage, cyber warfare, phone-hacking, and house demolition gives you a window into the toxic ideology that drives settler-colonisation, oppression, violence and apartheid.

Algerias President Starting State Visit to Russia at Invitation of Putin

(AP Photo/Fateh Guidoum, file)

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Tuesday is starting a three-day state visit to Russia meant to strengthen relations of friendship and cooperation at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, authorities said Tuesday.

The Algerian presidency said in a statement that Tebboune will attend an economic forum to be held this week in the city of St. Petersburg.

Putins invitation had been conveyed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his visit to Algiers in May last year with the aim of developing bilateral military, economic and humanitarian ties, and in other areas.

Some Algerian media have criticized the visit amid Russias war in Ukraine.

The timing is not at all appropriate, as this visit by the president could be understood as a bias in favor of Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, whereas officially, it has a position of neutrality, the Maghreb Emergent website wrote on Monday, raising concerns about a potential backlash from Western countries.

Tebboune answered a question on the issue during his last appearance on public television last month.

Russia is a friendly country which helped our revolution and with which we have historic political, diplomatic and economic relations, but we also have good relations with the United States and the countries of the European Union, he said.

Gas-rich Algeria is in a delicate position regarding its long-standing ties to Russia.

With drastically less capacity, Algeria is increasingly eyed by Eur...

Israeli spyware undermines global democracy Antony Loewenstein

A key part of my new book, The Palestine Laboratory, revolves around Israeli spyware.

US outlet In These Times has published an edited extract from this section.

Heres a taster:

Griselda Triana is a Mexican journalist, and human rights activist whose husband, Javier Valdez Crdenas, was slain by a drug cartel on May 15, 2017, in Culiacn, the capital of Sinaloa state. Valdez was the cofounder of the media outlet Riodoce, which investigated corruption and crime, and wrote about the bloody drug war. He paid the ultimate pricea grenade was thrown into his office in 2009. He had received death threats in the months before his murder, but he bravely continued his groundbreaking work despite the threats.

Ten days after his killing, Triana started receiving unexpected text messages on her mobile phone. She had no idea that they were suspicious until almost one year later, when it was discovered that there had been attempts to infiltrate her phone with the Pegasus system, a phone-hacking tool sold by Israeli surveillance company NSO Group, almost certainly by elements within the Mexican state. Before Javiers murder I did not know that we were being monitored, she told me. Javier had never informed her about the possibility of phone hacking, and she presumed that he was taking precautions for his safety. Javier knew about the risks of reporting criminal activities, but even so he was aware that someone had to document the atrocities of criminal organizations, she said.

Just less. "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Im not linking the story, but theres a lawsuit out of NYS that a school bus driver used zip ties to restrain a non-verbal kid, and when that kid acted out, the bus driver beat him WHILE HE WAS RESTRAINED.

I bring it up because were really worried about queer rights and BLM and a few other things that seem like theyre super-immediate issues b/c of how theyre in play in the media. But theres a reason that you dont see politicians defending the right of adults to hurt kids with disabilities: its because that right is still largely unchallenged. Wait! you say. WHAT? you say. But wait for it.

The parents in this case may be suing on their sons behalf, but its not like when your fucked up uncle shows up at Thanksgiving he rants about how youre not allowed to hit kids anymore, because even if the family does push back, the jackass uncle says, But the kid CANT TALK, and hes been told not to act out, so what are you doing to do? And the realistic thing is that around most of those Thanksgiving tables everybody gets quiet, not because theyre comfortable with what Uncle FuckFace is claiming about a right to hit kids with disabilities, but because they dont actually know the answer. Because how to work with non-verbal kids is a complex topic practically (they can be productively non-verbal for different reasons and the ability for receptive communication of productively non-verbal kids can differ widely), but also because we dont know **morally** what we want for those kids.

This moral uncertainty derives not least from the capitalist/Calvinist mythology of lifting oneself up by ones bootstraps in which we are so steeped that when confronted with a situation that the average person who hasnt educated themselves on these issues recognizes as impossible to lift oneself out of, that average person doesnt actually have in mind a good list of alternatives. Instead theyre stuck. They literally dont know what to do with or for people with serious disabilities because if they cant capitalism then how they fuck do they even fit into our system? Many persons with disabilities can become profit-producing employees, even if it requires a bit more upfront investment before they become productive for shareholders. But what if you cant? Those persons are as much outsiders to a capitalist society as trans people are to a gendered society.

And so, not having a snappy comeback to Uncle TaintFilth, we who recognize the limits of our knowledge, we who have some humility, we who have sufficient self-awareness to say, I actually dont know the answer, shut up in the face of the weve got to beat the kids argument.

And look, this is COMPLETELY NORMAL. If youre someone who admits you don&#...

The problem with PWC and the Big 4 : Treason is the business model The Pen

Investigative journalist Michael West writes (Michael West Media 1 June 2023) about how the scandal surrounding PwC is not one off, but part of systemic problem involving al the 4 big American finance advisory multinationals. All have been acting as the middleman between the Australian government and big corporations. All have been advising their clients how to avoid paying tax, while securing generous government contracts. They stand above the law, betray Australia, and pose the challenge on how o deal with them. Michael West is a former journalist and editor with Fairfax newspapers, and columnist for News Corp.

Its all in plain sight. You can find this on the internet. Lets talk it says at the end of the missive, displaying the contact details of PwCs International Tax Partners in the US and Australia, including Peter Collins, the man at the centre of the scandal, the man the other partners tried to scapegoat as the rogue culprit who was entirely at fault for the whole caper.

Download document [44.11 KB]

It has been fascinating to watch the PwC scandal evolve. It began with a leak from an obscure little industry body most people had never heard of, the Tax Practitioners Board, which disclosed PwC partner Peter Collins had copped a 2-year ban for acting as a tax practitioner. That went public, and snowballed spectacularly.

PwC chief executive Tom Seymour was the next casualty, shot by the partnership after declaring at a conference that the leaks were the work of just one rogue partner Peter Collins. The problem with Seymours PR strategy was that a trove of emails shortly emerged showing dozens of partners were in on the rort.

The cover-up proved more deadly than the crime; it was fuel to the fire of suspicions over Big 4 conflicts of interest which had been smoking for years. And now the rolling revelations from the Senate Inquiry into Consultants.

Forest for the trees

Peeling back these trees to behold the forest of Big 4 conflicts however and the problems are deeper, more systemic, more shocking than this inquiry alone can plumb....

FLASHBACK: What future do we have if the woke warriors destroy our past? "IndyWatch Feed World"

Are you pro or anti Hiroshima? Who would ask such a question? And who would dare to answer it? The answer to the last of those questions seems to be: "An awful lot of people." This past week saw the 75th anniversary of the dropping of the Hiroshima bomb. Across the media it was widely referred to as an "atrocity". A granddaughter of one of the remarkable men who worked at the Manhattan Project even did one of those modern media tours of shame, expressing her remorse over the involvement of a grandfather who had died before she was born. Of course, all such reflection is only possible because the Allies won the Second World War. Today, it is remarkably easy to condemn or otherwise feel discomfort about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Because we know how the war ended. The more interesting and important question is how we might have felt at the time, and some element of doubt about that ought to inform a more appropriate attitude and approach towards history. Many historians...

Justin Trudeau dismisses parental rights as 'far right' "IndyWatch Feed World"

Parental rights are now a "far right" political issue, according to Justin Trudeau. It may be that the prime minister didn't mean to disparage millions of parents by lumping them in with other far-right radicals like white supremacists and fascists, but that he did so speaks to his tendency to shoot from the lip. It is unfortunate that, once again, Trudeau, who has often denounced partisanship while urging conciliation, uses inflammatory rhetoric which will alienate a large portion of Canadians. Trudeau's divisive language comes in the wake of the government of New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs making controversial changes to gender rules in the province's schools. One major change is that parental consent would be required for trans or nonbinary students under the age of 16 to change their names or pronouns in school. Higgs, who is facing a revolt from some of his own members about the policy, has defended it as "taking a strong position for families." Higgs is at least being...

No inquiry would be better than this inquiry "IndyWatch Feed War"

It doesnt look good for balance or evidence when the Covid-19 inquiry is asking for lateral flow tests and masks

BY LAURA DODSWORTH | JUNE 13, 2023

These walls are funny. First you hate em, then you get used to em. Nuff time passes, you get so you depend on em. Thats institutionalised. From The Shawshank Redemption

The first Covid-19 inquiry public hearing will be held today, following the preliminary hearings which began in February. The inquiry will call witnesses to give evidence under oath and they will then be questioned by barristers and the chair, Baroness Hallett.

There is no deadline for the inquirys conclusion. It is an eye-wateringly expensive investigation, currently estimated to cost 114 million, but it will potentially run to more than the Bloody Sunday inquiry which was nearly 200 million. 63 lawyers are working directly for the inquiry and a further 100 are named as representatives. MP Graham Stringer has commented that this is a very expensive and very bloated inquiry and it may be used to kick things into [the] very long grass.

It is important not to pre-judge the outcome of the inquiry, but it has been increasingly difficult to be hopeful for the inquirys fairness and value for money. After the imbalance of the modules and core participants, the first serious dark cloud to descend was the lamentable list of 150 questions put by Baroness Hallett to Boris Johnson. Now, they are only questions and we dont have the answers yet, but to give you an idea, question 45 was particularly chilling:

45. To what extent did the UK Government have regard during the period January to March 2020 to the response of other countries to Covid-19? Did you consider taking more stringent measures in response to Covid-19 such as those seen in, for example, Taiwan, Singapore, New Zealand etc? What, if any, assumptions were made about how such measures would (or would not) work in the UK?

Why not Sweden? It did not impose strict lockdowns, or close schools for under 16s and currently has the one of the worlds lowest excess mortality figures. This inquiry appears to favour stringency above existing pandemic planning, minimum economic an...

Mr. Roger Waters Neighborhood vs. Bellwethers of Political Correctness Run Amuck "IndyWatch Feed Asia"

Mr. Roger Waters Neighborhood

Recently, I watched Roger Waters This is Not a Drill a live worldwide broadcast from Prague.   He had a lot to say in this particular concert, beginning with a statement that he won the pending court case against him where people in Frankfurt, Germany, were accusing him of being an anti-Semite. The court ruled he is not anti-Semitic and invited him back to Frankfurt.

Part of the show includes a satirical performance where he pretends to be a Hitler-like Nazi leader, with flags and a symbol resembling the Swastika but made with hammers. He wears a black costume with a black cape and black boots, and then shoots a fake rifle around the audience. In this excerpt, he stops the show, removes the scary black costume, and reads an answer to the critics. I hope the Nazis dont come knocking on my door for posting it

The language of the UK Guardian newspaper also writes of his court victory allowing for his May 28, 2023, concert to go on as planned, with some interesting phrasing: Court rules in favour of former Pink Floyd frontman despite tasteless use of Nazi-inspired symbolism.

As Mr. Waters explains, My depiction of an unhinged fascist demagogue has been a feature of my shows since Pink Floyds The Wall in 1980. What is or is not tasteless should left to the audience to decide.

A flying pig (balloon) is a feature of the show, with slogans on the side. This one says Steal from the Poor. Give to the Rich. Songs are inspired by the writings of George Orwells Animal Farm plus sayings from 1984 are occasionally shown on screen. People are more afraid of the scary black uniforms of make-believe than they are the truth.

This is why administrators dont teach "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Academics get constant training it seems like every week or two the university trots out a new module and duns our email with notifications that we are REQUIRED to take it, and if we defer the training to a more convenient time the notifications dont stop. Its a lousy system, but necessary. Its just that the methods are so poor. For example, this article on sexual harassment in science offers up a few criticisms.

Sexual harassment includes forcing people into sexual activity, giving unwanted sexual attention to someone and making unwanted comments or threats to someone based on their gender. The negative effects of sexual harassment also apply to the people who witness it and the organizations involved. The first thing that experts say needs to be overhauled is traditional sexual harassment training.

The computer-based format of some training modules is familiar to anyone starting a new job, including us. We remember laughable scenarios that were, at best, out of touch with how real people behave, or showed only the most extreme examples of harassment. The training was unrealistic, unmemorable and something to click through as fast as we could. Such passive, simplistic training typically fails, as sociologists Frank Dobbin of Harvard University and Alexandra Kalev of Tel Aviv University found in a Harvard Business Review analysis in 2020.

Training needs to be more in-person, according to experts. People can interact with a live instructor who has specialized knowledge of awkward topics and how to talk effectively about them. The trainers can take the backgrounds and ages of people in the group into account, answer questions in real time, and tailor their program to the organization; what people at a nonprofit might need could be different from workers at a big-box store or in an academic setting. And even in academia, training for scientists who work in the field could be different than for those who work in a lab.

This past weekend, after a week of emails telling me I am REQUIRED to take training in Fundamentals of Disability Accommodations and Inclusive Course Design, I did it. It was fundamentally terrible. I am 100% in agreement with the importance of the topic, and I took it very seriously and cleared my calendar and went through this self-paced online program in about an hour and a half. It consisted of a series of simple web pages emphasizing specific points, interspersed with 2-5 minute videos of faculty and students talking about how they solv...

The Espionage Act Is Not The Answer To Donald Trump "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The following independent journalism was made possible by paid subscribers. Take advantage of this discount offer and subscribe to Shadowproofs Dissenter Newsletter today.

While the United States Justice Department has increasingly wielded the Espionage Act to make an example out of government employees or contractors, federal prosecutors have been reluctant to charge current and former high-ranking officials. That makes the thirty-one Espionage Act charges against former President Donald Trump stunning.

On June 8, 2023, Trump was accused by prosecutors of unauthorized possession of documents relating to the national defense. He was additionally accused of willfully retaining those documents and failing to turn them over to an officer or employee entitled to receive them.

The alleged offenses fall under 793(e) of the Espionage Act, which has featured in a number of leak prosecutions against whistleblowers and media sources. Of course, Trump is neither. He kept the documents in boxes at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

Back on August 10, 2022, days after the FBI raided Trumps estate, I published an analysis of prior cases where the Justice Department had investigated lower-level government employees or contractors for unauthorized possession of information. In big bold letters, I shared it under the headline, Justice Department Unlikely To Charge Trump With Violating The Espionage Act.

I was fairly certain, given the example of General David Petraeus, that Trumps legal team would be able to negotiate with the Justice Department behind closed doors to ensure that he was not charged with violating the Espionage Act. But I was wrong, and now I realize that would have required Trump to concede that he had done something wrong by possessing the classified documents.

Numerous Republicans have lashed out at the Justice Department for indicting Trump, who has a commanding lead in polls for the partys 2024 presidential primary. Republicans contend that the Justice Department has been weaponized against Trump.

Such a response would be easy to flat-out dismiss if it werent for the fact that the Justice Department has been, in one way or another, investigating Trump since 2016.

As Jeff Gerth exhaustively documented for the Columbia Journalism Review, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her campaign secretly sponsored and publicly promoted an unsubstantiated consp...

Swimming Pool Safety What You Need to Know The Situation

Installing a new swimming pool in your backyard is a very exciting moment indeed. But before you start inviting everyone for a dip, you need to first make sure that your pool is safe to swim in.

As a responsible pool owner, its essential that you dont cut corners when it comes to pool safety. In Victoria, if you dont adhere to local safety regulations, you could get a fine that can go all the way up to $1,600. More importantly, failing to comply with safety regulations also puts you and your loved ones at a higher risk of getting hurt. Common pool injuries include drowning, slip and falls, poisoning via pool chemicals, and electrical injuries.

From your choice of pool pavers to the chlorine content of your water, there are a lot of things that you need to consider to make sure that your swimming pool and pool area is safe.

In this blog, were going to go over five things that you can do to keep your backyard pool safe.

Work with Reliable Pool Builders

The first thing that you need to do is to find a reliable pool builder. Experienced pool builders will have a comprehensive understanding of all relevant safety regulations in your area. They will make sure that your pool is built according to local government guidelines and acquire all the necessary building permits for you. If youre having trouble choosing the right paver or the right pool pump, a good builder should be able to provide you with sound advice about that as well.

In Victoria, some aspects of your pool will need to be inspected by registered building surveyors or inspectors before they can be approved for use. A reputable builder will be able to help pass any safety inspections that are required by your local council.

Build a Proper Pool Fence

According to the Victorian Building Authority, all swimming pools or spas that are more than 30cm deep must have a safety barrier that is compliant with AS1926.1-1993.If youre building a pool barrier fence, it must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be at least 1.2m high
  • Have a gap under the fence that does not exceed 100mm
  • Horizontals must be at least 0.9m apart if the verticals are between 10mm and 100m
  • Verticals must not be further apart than 10mm in all other cases
  • If it meets existing fencing, it must be protected to a distance of 1.2m on the outside of the pool fence and 300mm on the inside

For the full criteria, please refer to the pool barrier fact sheet provided by the Victorian Government.

You Think Trump Cant Win in 2024? Less Than 22,000 Votes Stand Between Him And The White House New Matilda

They say when America sneezes, Australia gets a cold. Well, Americas poised to suffer another migraine, and his name is Donald Trump. Chris Graham outlines the path back to the White House for the worlds most dangerous leader, and explains just how short and wide it really is.

Theres no way Donald Trump could ever return to the White House, right? In just the course of the last few months alone hes been criminally indicted on charges of falsifying electoral documents over his payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels; hes been found to have sexually abused writer E. Jean Carrol, in the 1990s; and this week hell be indicted again, this time on federal crimes related to the theft of top secret and classified documents.

And none of that even factors in the reality that hes also facing investigation in Georgia over his conduct around the 2020 election, nor the Congressional and other investigations into the January 6 assault on the US Capitol building, an attempt led by Trump to prevent the certification of Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

So even if Trump somehow manages to escape jail over the next 18 months, theres no way Americans would vote him back in, right? Well think again. Not only has Trump time and again proved his critics wrong, but his path back to the US presidency is a lot easier than you might think. And by a lot, I mean an American shit-tonne.

Based on voting in the 2020 election, there are six US swing states which were won by Biden, but if won back by Trump in 2024 would more than deliver him enough electoral college votes to win back the presidency: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The margins in four of those states are the definition of razor thin theyre less than one per cent, and in the case of Georgia its a margin of just 0.12 per cent, or to be even more precise, 5,230 votes. In Arizona, the margin is 0.16 per cent (5,819 votes); and Wisconsin is 0.32 per cent (10,342 votes). Thats a total of just 21,462 votes, from more than 11 million voters.

Flipping just those three states in 2024 would deliver the 37 electoral college votes he needs to force a tie with Biden. An electoral college tie is then broken by the House of Representatives, which is currently controlled by the Republicans.

In other words, its not a big ask.

The Rule of Law Trump is Finished? "IndyWatch Feed World"

QUESTION: Marty; This seems that the onslaught against Trump is a desperate attempt fearing that he would stop the war and reverse climate change. I have been reading you for years. You have great sources but also a great insight into what is happening in this corrupt world. I used to question your warnings that the United States would end up in a civil war. Im at the point I cannot see how it is not possible.

Are they really this stupid to go after Trump if he could still become president even if convicted?

FS

ANSWER: This is an absolutely desperate attempt to make sure Trump does not ever get back to the White House. Even if he does, the talk in DC is that they will use this conviction for impeachment. But that would not really pass the test since it would be before taking office unless they stretch it out until January after he is sworn in. Nevertheless, there is far too much on the line for the Neocons. They will assassinate him as a last resort. These people assume the public is stupid and it will all blow over in 30 days anyhow when football season begins. They really do believe like the Romans, give us sports and they can do as they like.

If we look at the indictment, 31 of the 37 counts brought against Trump allege he willfully retained national defense information, which is a violation of the Espionage Act. This is really a stretch for the intent of that act was espionage and nobody is making a case that Trump was handing it to an enemy. Nevertheless, the indictment was extremely dangerous and far more serious than what Nixon faced. They are not playing games.

They are desperately staging this to put him in prison. Still, there is no actual smoking gun as they say. Trump has spoken about the classified documents acknowledging that they were classified. This is a serious risk and only a jury with common sense would find him not guilty. They use conspiracy so they do not have to prove everything beyond a reasonable doubt. It will be a case arguing what they think was in his mind at the time. Even this is selective prosecution after Biden had classified documents thrown in his car.

Scrying the Wind: New Research Will Revolutionize Biodiversity Tracking "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Much of the world around us is dying. Were in the midst of a mass extinction event, driven by human activity, and at this point its unclear exactly how this event will compare to its predecessors. We dont need an answer to that to know that its in our own interest to stop it, but I think that the effort to do so would be aided by a more accurate understanding of exactly what is going on. We measure the mass extinctions of the past by the fossil record- each event was discovered because a huge number of species simply stopped appearing, because there were no more of them to leave remains. We cant do that for our present crisis, because itll be a while before our era has something that could be called a fossil record.

No, if we want to understand the full horror of what were doing to our world, we have to find a way to figure out whats alive now, and track declines or disappearances, species by species. Once Upon A Time, the only way to do that was to go out and literally count individual organisms. A while back I posted about the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to determine the presence of alligator snapping turtles, simply by testing the water. Obviously, its a bit ridiculous to call the process simple, but its safer for scientists, less invasive for the turtles, and this technology means that instead of the time and effort spent laying hands on the organism in question, someone can collect water sample, label it, and send it to a lab. This might be bad news for those of us who like doing that kind of field work (certainly more than I like lab work or data analysis), but its great news for our overall ability to understand whats happening in the ecosystems of which were a part. I called that process scrying for turtles, because while DNA testing isnt magic, it sure as hell resembles some forms of it. You use powerful energies, dangerous potions, and complicated rituals, and you gain knowledge of what that water has touched, if you know the right questions to ask.

Well, it turns out we can scry the wind, as well as the water. More than that, it seems that we may even be able to ask questions of wind that was trapped in bottles, long ago:

In their new study, researchers including Clare, Allerton, and Brown along with Nina Garrett, York University Toronto, and first author Joanne Littlefair, Queen Mary University of London, tested w...

Billionaires are still paying no tax The Pen

Contributed by Jim Hayes

Something is wrong when billionaires go about paying no income tax, while everyone else is being denied the right to enjoy the same luxury. They can do this because the law provides them with loopholes and hey can pay for experts who will work it for them. Then they can claim this money back from paying taxpayers as a taxation expense. The yare rewarded for paying no tax.

Defenders of this obvious inequality are quick to brand anyone who questions it as engaging in the politics of envy. Perhaps this makes sese to those who believe self I the only value work thinking about. News flash. There are those who dont look at the world through the same lens.

This is why so many are incensed about hearing that analysis by the Australia Institute of information from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), which shows that 66 individuals pocketing an average of 14.5 million paid no tax. Analysis by the Australia Institute showed that they were aid $219,000 for help to avoid paying tax in 2020-21. This shows that they were tax receivers. Not just avoiders of paying tax.

And the Australian government continues to be on track to deliver a major cut to the nominal rate next year. Estimates ae that this will mean at least $313 billion taken from Australian citizens by 2033.

Angst against this is not envy. It is standing up for justice. After all, we live in a society where we are dependent on each other. Even billionaires. This dependency exists at and outside work. None of us could eat without those who produce the food, deliver the services, provide our transport and so on.

Working together harmoniously, is how society grows and every individual withi...

Major overhaul of national security law needed to protect open justice Media Release Archive | Human Rights Law Centre

A national security law used to shroud court cases in secrecy is undemocratic, possibly unconstitutional and in urgent need of comprehensive reform.

In a submission to the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM) Grant Donaldson SC, the Human Rights Law Centre has recommended a range of reforms to improve the National Security Information (Criminal and Civil Proceedings) Act 2004 (NSI Act).

In 2022, the INSLM recommended initial reforms to the NSI Act following a targeted review into Witness Js fully-secret criminal prosecution. The entire NSI Act is now under review to determine how a better balance can be struck between open justice and the protection of national security.

In its submission, Open Justice, Closed Courts, the Human Rights Law Centre called for practical safeguards to mitigate the impact of the NSI Act on democracy and open justice in cases where a degree of secrecy may be necessary. The submission also proposed:

  • The repeal of a mandatory requirement for some hearings to be held in closed court

  • The removal of a provision that forces judges to give greatest weight to the view of the Attorney-General in determining the level of secrecy to apply in NSI Act cases

  • The appointment of independent expert to advocate for transparency in cases where secrecy is sought; and

  • The retention and periodic review of secret judgments and other closed court materials, with appropriate access.

Human Rights Law Centre Senior Lawyer, Kieran Pender said:

Open justice is a critical democratic principle, protecting the human rights of all Australians. Yet in recent years we have seen the NSI Act used to shroud the prosecution of whistleblowers like Bernard Collaery, Witness J and David McBride in secrecy, and the fully-secret prosecution of Witness J. These cases undermine public confidence in our legal system.

Comprehensive reforms are required to put open justice at the heart of the NSI Act. Appropriate checks and balances are needed to ensure the NSI Act upholds open justice without compromising national security. If adopted, our recommendations would help ensure the sweeping secrecy in cases like Collaery and Witness J can never happen again.

Whats with all the naked Greek men? "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Sarah Murray, an assistant professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Toronto in Canada who is a cultural historian and archaeologist specializing in the material culture and institutions of early Greece, ponders an intriguing question: Why are so many of the Greek men found in depictions of ancient Greek art not wearing any clothes, even when they are engaged in everyday activities such as working in a foundry where basic safety should suggest that clothing was essential?

Scholars struggle to answer these questions with certainty. The truth is that male nudity, as both an aesthetic and a real practice in the ancient Greek context, was many-faceted. Men in Greek art seem to do pretty much everything without their pants on, ranging from the obvious (having sex), to the sensible (bathing and swimming), to the painful (riding horses), to the seemingly suicidal (fighting battles). The convention of nudity in Greek art cuts across apparent class differences as well as a wide range of activities: working-class nude men harvest olives and dig clay for pottery production, while heroes and gods from Greek myths and legends fight battles, pursue paramours and mourn lost friends, all while clad in armour that curiously leaves their most sensitive bits exposed.

The Classics scholar Eva Keuls entitled her book on Greek culture The Reign of the Phallus (1985), an apt turn of phrase to describe the heavily and kaleidoscopically phallic visual culture that people wandering around ancient Athens would have encountered. Overall, it is clear from the Greek case that the undressed human body can and did convey many things, depending on the context. Most of the nudity in Greek art probably does not actually represent life. We are fairly confident that Greek soldiers did not go to battle naked, that craftspeople did not in fact operate their kilns without protective clothing, and that farmers did not follow the ploughshare and oxen through cloddy fields in their birthday suits. That is to say, ancient Greece was definitively not a nudist society.

While depictions of male nudity were common in many areas of the Eastern Mediterranean society, there was one aspect that was peculiar to Greeks.

However, there is one form of nudity in Greek art that is quintessentially Greek and that does reflect a real and distinctive real-life practice. This is what the great, late art historian and Etruscologist Larissa Bonfante termed civic nudity, in what remains a key paper on the topic from 1989. Bonfante described civic nudity as informal, nude athletic activity that took place on a regular basis in gymnasia.

Understanding the institution of civic nudity is crucial for reconstructing the central place of the naked, young, athle...

BEST OF THE WEB: King Tutankhamun's 'longer than normal skull, exceedingly large brain' revealed in vivid new facial approximation "IndyWatch Feed Africa"

The pharaoh Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut, is arguably the best-known ruler in ancient Egyptian history. And while much has been written about the royal youth, who held the throne from about the age of 9 until his death a decade later around 1323 B.C., his actual appearance is still a matter of debate. But now, a new facial approximation provides a glimpse of what the historical figure may have looked like, revealing new insight into some of the former king's more peculiar facial characteristics. "Tutankhamun is of archaeological interest not only because of his world-famous burial treasure, but because he ruled for a decade at an important phase in Egyptian history," Michael Habicht, a senior research fellow at Flinders University in Australia and co-author of the new research, told Live Science in an email. Tut's father, the revolutionary pharaoh Akhenaten, had discouraged worship of all gods except Aten, the sun disc. But Tut did not follow his father's ways.

Thirty randomized clinical trials involving a researcher in Egypt who has already had six papers retracted show signs of research misconduct and data fabrication, according to the authors of a recent preprint

Ben Mol, one of the authors of the preprint and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Monash University in Australia, has spent several years investigating the work of Sherief Abd-Elsalam, a hepatologist and gastroenterologist at Tanta University in Egypt. Parliament Must Act Now to Free Julian Assange - an Open Letter to the Assange Parliamentary Support Group "IndyWatch Feed World"

I emailed the following to Independent Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie and to a number of other members of the Bring Julian Assange Parliamentary Support Group on the evening of Monday 12 June, the day before the 13 June resumption of the sitting of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. How you can help : Contact your local Member of Parliament, your state Senators or members of the and ask them to vote for my proposed motion, included below or, at least, to vote for the procedural motion to allow Standing Orders to be suspended so that motion can be put. Please let us know here on candobetter of your efforts, any responses or lack thereof.

Dear Andrew Wilkie,

This is further to my previous email of 9 May, which I include below as Appendix 2

I again write to you as the convenor of the (Assange Support Group).

As you are aware, UK Justice Jonathan Swift has rejected the grounds for Julian Assange's appeal against the 17 June 2022 ruling by previous UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, that he be extradited to the United States.

Should Swift's ruling stand, Julian Assange, who has broken no British law and, as, admitted by the US military, has never endangered the life of one US soldier through his Wikileaks news service, will be extradited to the United States to face a closed kangaroo court trial. Upon conviction, he will face 175 years imprisonment in conditions even worse than the 23 hours-per-day solitary confinement he has already endured at Belmarsh Prison for the last 4 years.

How this has not outraged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the other members of his government is beyond me. Yet, as revealed through that Freedom of Information (FOI) request, the PM has made no approaches to President Joe Biden on behalf of Julian Assange in the first 6 months since he was inaugurated in May 2022. Since then, Albanese has claimed to be pursuing 'quiet diplomacy' for Julian Assange. Given Swift's recent ruling, which allows Assange to be extradited, it's clear that the PM's 'quiet diplomacy' has achieved nothing for Julian Assange.

In a functioning Parliamentary democracy, this illegal and despicable conduct by both the US and the UK towards Australia's most famous and most revered citizen, and the abject failure b...

Solana Community Discusses Fork Due To SEC As Price Tanks "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

The Solana (SOL) token is one of the biggest losers on the crypto market with a price drop of around 30% in the last seven days. After the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) declared the Solana token as well as numerous other altcoins as securities in its lawsuits against Coinbase and Binance US, the SOL price plummeted.

In a worst-case scenario, the SEC could sue Solana Foundation in the same way it did Ripple Labs in December 2020. Thus, the bottom of the SOL prices slump might not be reached yet, if the SEC really takes this step and thus causes more investors to panic sell.

Solana Community And Developers Oppose The SEC

The Solana Foundation has now responded to the SECs classification of its SOL token as an unregistered security. In a statement, it said, The Solana Foundation strongly believes that SOL is not a security, adding SOL is the native token to the Solana blockchain, a robust, open-source, community-based software project that relies on decentralized user and developer engagement to expand and evolve.

While one developer at a recent event dismissed the SECs legal action, stating that developers give a shit about what the SEC thinks, there is a part of the community that is already thinking about possible ways to solve the SEC issue.

The founder of Degen Picks launched a poll within the Solana community on whether the blockchain should fork to avoid the regulatory issues with the SEC. A total of 2,050 people participated in the poll, 39.9% answered yup while 24.2% answered stfu (shut the fuck up).

Surprisingly, the idea is supported by Abracadabra founder @HGEABC. Via Twitter, he responded to the poll, writing, Bold but not a bad idea actually. C...

Novak Djokovic: Always More than Tennis "IndyWatch Feed War"

The victory of Novak Djokovic in the latest French Open had the usual mixed reception in Australia. While Australians pretend to like radicals, larrikins and the occasional deviant, the contrary is true. Tight buttoned, properly behaved and conformist to the point of invisibility, the boringly predictable are always preferred. You can rely on them.

Even in Melbourne, a town where his following is strong (he has won 10 Australian Opens), the call back circuit on the local ABC radio station qualified, ignored, even denigrated the Serbs latest achievement. At best, 23 grand slams, making him the most accomplished player in the open era, had to be seen alongside other caveats. He did not, one caller churlishly insisted, do the grand slam in one year, twice! Another, showing the sort of maturity demanded in some spectators, insisted that a French Open without Rafael Nadal was not a tournament worth seeing. Even the radio host joined in, regretting that it had to be Novak getting his nose in front.

Of the big three who have dominated tennis for almost two decades Roger Federer, Nadal and Djokovic the Serbian has tended to be seen as one playing catch-up, his talent formidable, colossal, yet limping behind the anointed ones. But the views of him as a player have rarely remained technical or specific to his craft. There is always something else about him that irritates and enrages, necessitating his diminishing. He does not play the role of what might be termed the nice person.

Cathal Kelly, writing for The Globe and Mail, wistfully recalls that other villain of tennis: the young Andre Agassi. Young Andre Agassi was insufferable. He was so easily detestable that Esquire magazine named its yearly razzy sports awards after him. But the insufferable became palatable: Agassi lost the wig, became a nice person. It was a real disappointment. He also found himself a wife of unquestioned goodness: another stellar tennis performer, Steffi Graf.

Djokovic, however, presents so...

New digital tool maps blue carbon ecosystems in high resolution "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

When Hurricane Dorian blazed its trail of destruction through the Bahamas in 2019, it ravaged the countrys mangroves. Almost overnight, coastal communities were deprived of a natural barrier that protected them from high tides and storm surges. Since then, several nonprofits and local organizations have taken up restoration projects to revive mangroves in the island nation. But given the scale of destruction, where do you begin? How do you determine which areas to prioritize? Florida-based nonprofit Perry Institute for Marine Sciences used a recently developed online tool to answer these questions. The Blue Carbon Explorer mapped out mangroves in the Bahamas, including a color-coded depiction of how their health had changed over time: red for mangrove loss, black for no change and green for mangrove growth. With the help of this data, the Perry team was able to pinpoint areas where mangroves had degraded and were not likely to recover naturally and used this information to prioritize sites for restoration. The team is currently working with local groups to try out a suite of methods to restore mangroves in the worst-affected areas, including direct planting, letting waves disperse propagules naturally and dropping propagules from drones in hard-to-reach areas. The data in the tool found degraded mangroves that are more isolated from the healthier ones, Valerie Pietsch McNulty, conservation scientist at the nonprofit Nature Conservancy, told Mongabay in a video interview. Those areas are less likely to recover naturally because they arent close to a seed source. The Blue CarbonThis article was originally published on Mongabay

Minnesota Man Gets Less Than 180 Days In Jail For Raping Girls Aged 4 And 9 "IndyWatch Feed War"

Mary Rooke The Daily Caller Jan 31, 2023

A 20-year-old man from Rochester, Minnesota, will spend less than six months in jail for raping two girls aged four and nine.

Mohamed Bakari Shei was sentenced to 176 days in the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center on Monday for two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with someone under 13, reported KIMT. Shei entered an Alford plea in Dec. 2022, pleading guilty while maintaining his innocence but acknowledging the evidence against him would cause a jury to convict him.

In addition to the jail sentence, District Judge Jacob Allen gave Shei 30 years of supervised probation and 200 hours of community work service, according to the report. Shei pled guilty to raping a nine-year-old girl several times beginning on Mothers Day 2018 and another girl around four or five years old in 2021, reported the Post Bulletin.

Olmsted County Senior Attorney Thomas Gort said Sheis plea deal included a stay of adjudication and no prison time to prevent him from prolonging his prosecution, according to the report. Shei could have challenged his status of being tried in adult court since he was around 16 years old when he committed the rapes.

With good behavior, Shei will serve, at most, 116 days in Olmsted County Adult Detention Center, the report stated. His jail sentence will begin Feb. 13, 2023. Shei was also ordered to undergo a sex offender program and complete 200 hours of community service.

At Sheis sentencing hearing, one of his victims gave a statement about her experience dealing with the sexual assaults. There is no moving on or getting over it. Ive tried, she said, according to the outlet.

A family member of one of Sheis victims told him he would answer for the sexual assaults that caused the child to become detached and introverted, the report stated.

Some day you will have to answer for his egregious act against a child, they told Shei in court.

Sheis plea deal does not require that he register as a sex offender.

When The Conditions of Life Go South, You Get All Kinds of Poseurs Playing God. You Can Expect The Usual Results. "IndyWatch Feed War"

Smoking Mirrors June 9, 2023

God Poet Transmitting.

If you ask your search engine; why does the smoke from Quebec blow South? You find that both the NY and LA Times have a spin on it, AND so do all kinds of other mass media cloacas. Its called getting ahead of the story cutting the truth off at the pass seizing the narrative until its in George Floyd Country.

The bottom feeders who ironically appear to be resident at the top of the food chain are well aware of the changes in patterns and trends as the new age comes into its measured sector in the endless cycle of Nature in transformation responding to the way The Light is precipitated into form through the particular constellation it will be shining through. We can only hope you read that sentence with some degree of patient attentiveness.

So they have latched on to certain areas of change with the idea that we can collectively do something about them; Climate Change, for instance. They want to be out in front of the traffic caused by humanitys latest passage through Time and Space.

I wonder how many people think about how the story about The Tower of Babel happened to make an appearance? Who was behind all those Greek and Roman myths? How about Noah and The Ark? Its patently absurd on the face of it, but are there deeper implications concerning God and Natures reactions to the decay of culture at that time?

Dont you get the feeling sometimes that someone several someones or something is behind the curtain that cuts off the view of backstage from the audience in the theater? Is life itself a Punch and Judy Show? I mean of course there are those bottom feeders who like to give the impression that they are in charge of conditions and events, and you could surmise that The Dark Lord is behind them, but surely The Dark Lord answers to someone too. Doesnt he?

Is he responsible for turning existence into The Buggerers Banquet? Is it humanity causing it through its collective resistance to The Light, or are these the things that happen automatically when Materialism reaches a certain level of density and intensity?

Consider The Fetal Position. Please note how as life advances toward death how the body seems to curl back into a similar position. I imagine if it kept going and Nature was accommodating then Humanity would likely disappear up its own waste canal?

It seems to me that you have either a circular awareness if you are one who thinks that what you see is all there is or a spiraling consciousness that by stages progresses to states of being beyond the bandwidth of the senses, w...

Still unanswered: Trumps motive for withholding classified documents "IndyWatch Feed War"

THE 49-PAGE GRAND JURY indictment, filed last week in Florida by the United States Department of Justice, contains 37 criminal charges against former president Donald Trump. The charges can be summarized into a two-fold accusation: Trump is alleged to have stolen more than 300 classified documents upon leaving the White House in January 2021. Moreover, he allegedly schemed with a group of advisors and aides in order to obstruct efforts by the government to retrieve the stolen documents. Both accusations are spelled out in stark detail in the pages of the indictment. What remains unanswered, however, is the motive.

The True Story of Hyperinflation "IndyWatch Feed World"

QUESTION: Dear Mr. Armstrong,
could you please explain what happens in technical terms from a capital flow perspective, when confidence is lost and hyperinflation starts to begin?
For example Turkey. When Erdogan was elected i think you wrote that ever since the lira started dropping. So confidence in politics is key. Do you think one day we will see hyperinflation in Turkey?
And another example, is Yugoslavia: what caused the hyperinflation (in technical terms/capital flow perspective)? Are foreign investors getting rid of the dinars? Too many dinars than suddenly rushed back into Yugoslavia causing hyperinflation?
Regards,
Magdalena .

ANSWER: The misnomer about hyperinflation is that it is caused by printing money. It is a RESPONSE to the collapse in the confidence of the government.  If we look at the 3rd century, this is where we find the greatest number of hoards of ancient coins. What began this was the capture of...

Assange's extradition go-ahead signals gloves off in the west "IndyWatch Feed World"

As Australia agrees to host a second US military base among the 800 to 1000 US bases and installations round the world, it also stands almost silently by as the US pursues Julian Assange's extradition to the bowels of the bent and fractured US legal system. This appalling system is now poised to outlaw free speech indefinitely in the United States and wherever its tentacles reach around the globe. Ironically, its prosecution of free speech won't affect Russia or China, which have cut themselves loose from its so-called 'democratic' chains.

No-one holds any hope that the 'trial' Julian will undergo in the US will give him justice.  Julian realised years before that extradition was just a prelude to torture and indefinite imprisonment, a pretense at fair legal process, in order to silence him and bring despair to those who support human rights.

What Julian is facing personally is truly demonic, but all journalists, including any bloggers, now potentially face the same, should anything they produce displease the billionaire oligarchs who now command the highest offices in the United States and destabilise and loot countries all over the world.  For that is the point of the US pursuit of Assange: it is to prevent criticism of modern corporate capitalism's real basis, which is the old-fashioned one of looting and violence.  Those who dominate our western governments have no love for self-determination and fairness, but they don't want the masses to understand this. Widespread comprehension of how dishonest and malign they really are would actually undermine their power stucture.

Was it always so?

Post-WW2 western democracy and human rights

After WW2, with vast amounts of cheap fossil fuel available, and an apparently viable alternative political system possible in the USSR, western countries seemed to become generous, humane and truly democratic.  Education, health and housing were made accessible, often free, as human rights.  Politicians were also accessible, with offices at ground level and no guards positioned outside.  Mere indignation seemed to spur them to action. Unemployment was something that only happened to the truly incompetent and indigent, inflation was low and wages easily caught up with it.

After the oil shocks of the early 1970s, when the governments of oil-producing states, including Australia's Whitlam Government, attempted to take control of their assets away from foreign corporations and prioritise them for their own peoples, nationally representative leaders were toppled, western populations were reeducated to endure scarcity and, gradually, education, health, and housing became more expensive, banking was dereg...

Trump Indictment: FBI Veteran Raises Red Flags Over Abnormal Mar-a-Lago Raid "IndyWatch Feed War"

By Ekaterina Blinova Sputnik 11.06.2023

A senior FBI official charged with executing the raid on former President Donald Trumps Mar-a-Lago last year has raised a red flag about abnormalities and apparent violations in the Justice Departments handling of the case.

Former Assistant Director of the FBIs Washington Field Office (WFO) Steven DAntuono has reached out to the US Congress citing concerns and frustration with the manner President Joe Bidens Department of Justice arranged the August 2022 raid of former President Donald Trumps Mar-a-Lago home.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan unveiled the damning testimony earlier this week and sent a letter to US Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding answers.

First, DAntuono, who had two decades of FBI experience, drew attention to the fact that the bureaus headquarters made the decision to assign the execution of the search warrant in Trumps Miami residence to the Washington Field Office. As per DAntuono, it looked strange given that the search occurred in the territory of the Miami Field Office, which should have been assigned with the task under the bureaus rules.

Second, the DoJ failed to assign a US Attorneys Office to the investigative matter of that magnitude which was unusual as per the FBI veteran. This triggered DAntuonos deep concerns as it was out of the ordinary. He noted that he never got a good answer from DoJ with regard to this decision.

Third, the FBI did not first seek consent to effectuate the search. DAntuono recalled that at the meeting between FBI and DoJ officials, the Department of Justice pushed the bureau to execute the search warrant as quickly as possible. Referring to his experience, the FBI veteran underscored that the agency should have sought consent to search the premises prior to the raid. DAntuono suggested that either AG Garland or FBI Director Christopher Wray made the decision to seek a search warrant despite opposition from the agents working on the case in the WFO. DAntuono pointed out that there was a good likelihood that [Trumps legal team] could have given consent.

Fourth, the FBI refused to wait for Trumps attorney to be present before the raid, as per DAntuono. The bureau veteran claimed that the FBI sought to exclude Trumps lawyers from the search, which again sounded an alarm for the senior officer.

The FBI veterans testimony has prompted US Republican lawmakers to make a repeated request for bureau documents and information concerning the raid. In his latest let...

Plants Can Clean Toxic Chemicals From The Air in Hours, Study Shows "IndyWatch Feed Health"

In the face of increasing global environmental concerns, air quality remains a paramount issue, both outdoors and inside our homes and offices. Recent studies by the Environmental Protection Agency suggest that indoor air pollutants are often two to five times higher than outdoor levels. These indoor air contaminants can lead to a host of health issues, including allergies, respiratory problems, and even chronic diseases such as cancer. Thankfully, research shows that nature might offer a solution to this mounting problem.

Plant-Powered Air Purification

A team of scientists at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Australia recently published a fascinating study on the potential of indoor plants to purify the air. The research, funded by plant-scaping company Ambius, discovered that certain plants within a vertical wall system were capable of absorbing harmful compounds found in petrol vapors. These toxins, known as volatile organic compounds or VOCs, are often present in public spaces such as offices, hospitals, and classrooms.

During an average workday, the experimental setup demonstrated that the plants could reduce the concentration of several notorious carcinogenic compounds to less than 20% of their original levels. The implications of this discovery for improving indoor air quality are immense, potentially offering an eco-friendly alternative to energy-intensive ventilation systems.

Assessing the Efficacy of Plant Purifiers

Although similar research has previously been conducted on the ability of plants to absorb VOCs, most studies assessed the removal of single chemical species under controlled conditions. In contrast, the UTS team...
