JSCOT 101 & why we need trade transparency AFTINET

17 March 2016

The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT) is currently reviewing submissions on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and it’s expected that public hearings will start soon.

If you’re not sure about exactly what JSCOT does or why it was set up, it’s worth watching a new video by the Australian House of Representatives official YouTube channel.

JSCOT has an important role in scrutinising our trade agreements, but it is very limited, because the committee does not see the text until after the decision to sign it is made by Cabinet, and cannot change it. Parliament only votes on the implementing legislation, not the whole agreement. AFTINET and other critics want to see draft texts during negotiations, and want Parliament to vote on the whole agreement.  See our submission to the 2015 Senate inquiry into the trade agreement process here.

Kelvin Thomson MP says in the video:

“The greatest frustration for both the committee and the public alike has been the fact that we don’t get to see the text of the treaties until it emerges and is signed, so this treaty making process is like a train in a tunnel and all of a sudden it emerges…â€

Better ban the Bard if #SafeSchools scares you: @burgewords comments on Australia’s #NeoPuritans No Fibs

Hated by the Puritans, the complete works of William Shakespeare was firmly entrenched in the Australian school syllabus decades ago. WESTERNERS have lived through many periods in which extreme Christians distributed anti-gay propaganda and got the ear of authorities, and this month’s spat from Australia’s hard, religious right shows not much has changed in four hundred years. It’s […]

Something to Consider in these End Times… DavidShurter.com

Contrary to popular belief- the opposite of Luciferianism is not Catholicism but rather Shamanism. Shamanism was the first spiritual practice of mankind and has been found in EVERY culture in the world. Luciferianism is a bastard adaptation of Shamanism.

In the Gospel of St. Thomas- Jesus Christ told his followers that the kingdom of Heaven was NOT in buildings made of wood and stone- but rather that the kingdom of Heaven existed within us and all around us. Lift a stone and we would find him- split a piece of wood and he would be there. Somehow this was left out (you can blame the Catholic Church and the Council of Nicaea for that) but it doesn’t make it any less true.

As a child- I had psychic energy manipulation crammed down my throat- but I learned that life is not as it is publicly presented. People seem to believe in mass that the power to help us- to save us- is somehow outside of us, but it isn’t. The power to change the world around us lies within us.

When it says that we were all made in the image of God- it had nothing to do with God having two legs, two arms, a head, and a torso. Made in the image of God- we all have the powers to create- to manifest. THIS is the real image of God we were all made from.

Now days, people either believe that magic doesn’t exist- or that is somehow inherently bad. But energy is a tool- much like a hammer. You can use a hammer to build a beautiful building- or you can use a hammer to bash someone’s head in; the choice on how we use that tool is up to us. But claiming that the magic of Heaven doesn’t exist is much like putting a plastic bag over your head and claiming that you don’t breathe oxygen. To deny the existence of magic is nothing but a delusion.

From my Shamanic practice, I have learned that Heaven is INDEED within us and all around us and is just as real and just as invisible as the oxygen we breathe to live. The powers of manifestation are all around us and cons...

Brisbane ABC 'Drive' hosts debate on congestion with Lord Mayoral candidates (We) can do better

Tonight I attended a debate between Brisbane Lord Mayoral candidates: Graham Quirk (incumbent, LNP), Ben Pennings (Greens) and Rod Harding (Labor). The debate was held on 17 March 2016 in the ABC South Bank building, hosted, ironically, during 5-6pm "Drive," by Emma Griffiths. Questions from staff and guests were almost entirely about congestion due to population growth. An air of farce built up as the candidates' delivery was interrupted by frequent traffic bulletins describing appalling road congestion and accidents from seemingly every major artery in Brisbane.

The thing that stood out about the candidates was that no-one stood out with any clarity. They all seemed to be saying that they would encourage more public transport, then putting down each other's detail sound-bites. Graham Quirk, as the current Lord Mayor, seemed a little more relaxed than the other candidates. Mr Harding came across as quite bitchy and caused me to nearly laugh out loud, when he claimed that he would fix the planning the way they did in Vancouver, which he cited as 'the most liveable city in the world'. See more on the 'livability index'. Tim Murray has written a lot about how unlivable Vancouver is and aerial photographs show a coastline bristling with pointy skyscrapers.

Ben Pennings told the audience that the other two candidates were recipients of donations from property developers. Indeed, Brisbane is run by property developers.

Graham Quirk justified continuous growth in roads...

Community Celebration – #Bulga Beats A Generous Heart Despite Threat From #Coal Expansion by @coolmccool No Fibs

The recent Bulga Beats Festival was a warm celebration of community spirit, from a small town determined to show its strength and vitality, in spite of the existential threat it faces from Rio Tinto’s encroaching Warkworth open cut mine. If Rio Tinto gets its way, Bulga will be effectively swallowed by the coal mine, and […]

Red room and the quest for Queensland fixed four year terms: @Qldaah #qldpol No Fibs

Opinion The referendum this Saturday on fixed four year terms for the Queensland state parliament will fail. I know this because voters have two main concerns. They fear a return of a “Campbell Newman”; not being able to oust a bad premier for four long years. Queenslanders have also expressed a long harboured desire to restore the upper house which […]

LGBTI versus Christians, an unnecessary war: @burgewords comments on #SafeSchools No Fibs

This is not a suffering competition for martyrs, it’s a legislative process taking place in a secular nation. THE Turnbull government has no firm plans for a public vote on marriage equality.
