DavidShurter.com: How Victims of Child Sexual Abuse Are Treated Globally- the Case of Dean Henry in Australia "IndyWatch Feed National"

There has always been a strong push to quiet victims of child abuse- esp. when that abuse is linked to a large, well organized, and well-funded group of elite pedophiles. They will do just about anything they can to stop victims from coming out and telling their stories, and this elite group of pedophiles do not like their names being called out. We are seeing this as a global phenomenon as we can see from the examples in America, the UK, and Australia. This elite group of pedophiles will use their incredible influence and vast resources to keep victims from talking and having their names called out.

The new push is to keep only those accused who are dead being named, giving the impression that no one alive is doing this- although people like Jimmy Saville and Lord Janner obviously didn’t work alone when committing and covering up their crimes. This group of elite pedophiles wants everyone to think that these types of situations are historic and certainly not ongoing in order to distract from the fact that this situation of selling and raping children is rampant everywhere in the world is ONGOING and still happening today.

I received what I am about to post from a third party who wanted to show me the issues that victims in Australia are dealing with if they come out and speak about being abused as children. This case deals with Dean Henry- who was horribly abused in a boys home in Australia and shows just what victims have to face when they come forward and tell people about their abuse. It is representative of what EVERY victim faces when they come forward, and this is GLOBALLY. If there wasn’t a cover-up being enacted with this, one would think that victims of childhood abuse would be welcomed to tell their story in order to prevent other children from experiencing the same fate- but the fact that these horror stories are WAY TO PERVASIVE with EVERY victim who comes forward- it shows that a cover-up to hide these situations and protect the...

North Coast Voices: Former Australian defence minister Kevin Andrews skips first week of parliament to address Koch Brothers' funded U.S. Heritage Foundation event "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Former prime minister Tony Abbott was a guest speaker at an Alliance Defending Freedom dinner on 28 January 2016 and now his political ally former defence minister Kevin Andrews is scheduled to deliver a speech at a Heritage Foundation event being held in the Allison Auditorium, Washington DC.

This speech can be watched live online from 3am AEDT (Sydney) on 3 February 2016 at http://www.heritage.org/events/2016/02/australia .

Like Alliance Defending Freedom, the Heritage Foundation is a far-right American organisation which seeks to influence federal and state elections, as well as politicians and government policy.

North Coast Voices: In the hope of winning back the highest political office in the land is Tony Abbott committing a cardinal sin against gender equality and Australian democracy? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Did anyone really think that American hard-right religious extremism was confined to U.S. shores and missionary outposts in third world countries?

Does anyone really believe that former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott is currently courting the misogynistic, homophobic, religious extremist group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) simply to support the notion of Christian family ideals?

The reality is very different.

Religious extremism USA-style is already in this country and it appears that Tony Abbott may be intent on tapping its influence and money in order to rebuild his personal political power.

Indeed, in The Guardian on 27 January 2016, a phone conversation between a journalist and an ADF representative is quoted which seems to indicate that Abbott may be doing just that:

(We) can do better: Video Interview: Danish Parliament member recommends Australian refugee processing system "IndyWatch Feed National"

A frank discussion about the consequences of Merkel's open borders on Denmark, with a number of references to the Australian system for processing refugees. Note, however, that refugees do not usually achieve permanent resettlement in Europe, whereas they usually do in Australia. When European governments talk about taking in refugees, they are talking about a temporary situation. In this interview Oksana Boyko of RT asks Ft. Anders Vistisen about the Danish plan to confiscate valuables from refugee applicants to pay for their costs and how many more refugees can Denmark accept. Why is Denmark moving refugees to rural camps? Won't that detract from their integration?

Catallaxy Files: Guest Post: John Comnenus – An Open Letter to the Hon Barnaby Joyce MP "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

Dear Barnaby,

There has been some chatter that you might soon become the National Party leader. If so, allow me make a suggestion to more effectively use the electoral power of the National Party and to wrench policy back in a more conservative direction.

Upon becoming the Nationals leader you should immediately go to Bill Shorten and ask him what the ALP is happy to offer the Nationals if it were a junior Coalition parter. Think about the potential power of such a move.

The biggest threats to Bill Shorten’s leadership are Albanese and Plibersek who are both from the Left and in seats vulnerable to the Greens. The biggest block to the ALP being more centrist and electorally popular is the need to placate the Green leaning voters in a handfull of inner city seats in the major cities.

Shorten might be happy to lose a couple of inner city seats if it means he disposes of his leadership rivals and can regain some more centrist outer suburban and regional seats that are currently held by the Liberals. These types of seats in places like Surfers, the Central Coast, Mandurah and the like might vote ALP if they knew Labor will be moderated by the Nationals as a junior partner.

After speaking with Shorten you should speak with Malcolm Turnbull and advise him that the Nationals are no longer going to be a doormat for a left wing Liberal party. Advise him that the Nationals will decide who forms Government after the next election and that the support from the Nationals is up for grabs. Let him know that you have already spoken to Shorten and are expecting the ALP’s pitch. Let him know you will compare offers, put it to a vote of the National Party room and act accordingly.

You might just get Turnbull to actually take conservatives seriously. Of course if you are not supporting the Liberals you can contest a number of three cornered contest, get ALP preferences to win a swag of regional seats off the Liberals. You would m...

Catallaxy Files: Is Trump a “conservative”? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

I don’t vote according to labels but there is no doubt that so far as modern political labels go, conservative is the closest it gets. This is from an article on Why I Support Donald Trump and Not Ted Cruz which begins by addressing what does it mean to be a “conservative”:

“Conservatism,” as [Russell] Kirk explained it, encompassed an inherent distrust of liberal democracy, staunch opposition to egalitarianism, and an extreme reluctance to commit the United States to global “crusades” to impose American “values” on “unenlightened” countries around the world. Conservatives should celebrate local traditions, customs, and the inherited legacies of other peoples, and not attempt to destroy them. America, Kirk insisted, was not founded on a democratic, hegemonic ideology, but as an expression and continuation of European traditions and strong localist, familial and religious belief. Indeed, Kirk authored a profound biography of Senator Robert Taft, “Mr. Conservative,” who embodied those principles.

It’s a long article and well worth reading through. Here, however, is the core point on why Trump is preferred to Cruz:

What is needed in this nation now is dramatic, even radical change. What is needed is not someone who will simply raise Hell, but someone who will be more like a bull loosed in a terrified china shop. Half measures and regular politicians, “mainstream conservatives” like Ted Cruz, I don’t think can pull it off. Trump, I believe, just maybe can.

“Just maybe can” is a better probability statement than is attached to any other candidate at the present time. Interestingly, and by no means a coincidence since this is a central issue in this election, Byron York has asked Trump...

Hungary court acquits leaders of firm behind toxic spill

Marton Duna | Reuters

Fifteen people tried in connection with a toxic spill from an alumina reservoir in western Hungary that killed 10 people in 2010 were acquitted on Thursday, an outcome a local mayor said would only serve to further traumatize and anger residents.

The spill was one of Hungary’s worst environmental disasters. Toxic red mud flowing from the reservoir destroyed hundreds of homes across three towns, covered the countryside and seeped into rivers as far downstream as the Danube.

It took years to clean up at a cost of about 40 billion forints ($140 million).

MAL Corp, the aluminum smelting company that owned the faulty alumina reservoir was subsequently taken over by the government, which declared it responsible for the incident and began to close it down. It is still under liquidation.

But in a first instance ruling, the court in the western town of Veszprem said executives and top employees of MAL had not been criminally negligent, nor had they committed other crimes they were charged with during the 40-month legal procedure.

“The defendants had no realistic and objective opportun...

Catallaxy Files: Green economic vandalism throttling farming "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

As a result of irrigation, the Murray Darling Basin became Australia’s premier agricultural province – accounting for up to 40 per cent of the nation’s farm output.  It did so while making the river system more pleasing and safer by creating a placid, ever-flowing river.

The farming benefits of the river having been achieved, green groups led by the ACF and acting under the umbrella of the “Wentworth Group” (founded in 2002 and named after the posh Sydney hotel where they met) started campaigning to suppress irrigation in the area.  The group contained the usual suspects, including David Karoly, Tim Flannery, Martjin Wilder, Peter Cullin, Peter Cosier and were bankrolled by the heir to the Clyde Industries fortune, Robert Purves.

In attacking irrigation as the key to commercial farming on the Murray, the Wentworth group first claimed it was creating salinity and we had a stream of ABC programs (e.g here, here and here) purporting to demonstrate this.  That furphy was unfounded and we hear little of it now.  Salt was never a problem (the Darling is naturally salty) and it is easily remedied.

But economic vandalism gained a whole new focus with the greenhouse scare.  This, coupled with the Millennium drought 1995-2009, brought intensified calls for reducing irrigation – The Garnaut Report even maintained that irrigated agriculture in the area would need to cease by 2050.  The drought having broken, analysis of rainfall records shows it was just another episode in the endless volatility of the rainfall over much of Australia.

In addition to these claims about the need to cease irrigated agriculture and revert to nature there was a third rat...

Mongabay Environmental News: Sri Lanka crushes and destroys over 350 ivory tusks "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

In May 2012, customs authorities at the Port of Colombo in Sri Lanka seized a shipment of 359 African elephant tusks. The ivory shipment, weighing around 1.5 tons, was being moved from Kenya to Dubai, with Sri Lanka as a transit point. Hundreds of elephants in Africa, including juveniles, are believed to have been slaughtered for these tusks. Today, these 359 ivory tusks -- Sri Lanka’s biggest-ever haul and the country’s entire ivory stockpile -- are being crushed and destroyed at the Galle Face Green in Colombo, an act that is meant to demonstrate the country’s intolerance for wildlife crime. Later, the ivory will be burned in an incinerator, according to National Geographic news. This is the first time a South Asian country is destroying its illegal ivory stockpile. Globally, Sri Lanka is the sixteenth country to destroy its ivory, joining countries like the U.S., Kenya, Belgium, Chad, China, Thailand, the Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Mozambique, France, Gabon, Zambia, Hong Kong SAR China, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates. Today’s ivory crush began with a religious ceremony performed by Buddhist monks, and Hindu, Muslim and Christian representatives, who prayed for elephants that were butchered for the tusks. Catallaxy Files: Be warned of “self-determination” and Constitutional reform "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

The shape of things to come in Australia? Winston Peters warns of the tribalization of NZ.

Under the new bill, every council in New Zealand will be required by law, to invite the local iwi to “discuss, agree and record ways in which tangata whenua” through iwi authorities, can participate in the formulation of policy plans, including water management plans,he said…

The proposed changes to the RMA are a signal flare to the entire country that the two parties are taking us down the track of separatism. We are no longer one people. We are moving towards two separate groups with separate rights.

Beware of the push for “self-determination” of national, racial and ethnic groups. The principle, in its pure form, amounts to the demand that each state should be a nation-state: that it should be confined within a natural border, and that this border should coincide with the location of an ethnic group.

However apart from the possible example of Iceland there are virtually no nation states of that kind and the attempt to realise that state of affairs has caused endless conflict and strife when ethnic minorities demanded that they be allowed to break away or join an adjacent state where they would be the majority. For example Czechoslovakia was formed under the principle of national self-determination but as soon as it was formed the Slovaks demanded t be free (in the name of the same principle), and finally it was destroyed by the German minority, in the name of the same principle. The latest example of this principle is the demand for a Palestinian nation state which is used as a rationale for waging war on Israel.

The Political Sword: Still more on framing the political debate - the key to winning "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

I began this short series on political framing with the image above, and illustrated the concept with some overseas examples. In the second part I used examples from the contemporary federal political scene, pointed out the dangers of accepting political opponents’ framing, and examined ways of countering that framing. In this final part, I will further illustrate framing with some very contemporary political framing.

I hope that these pieces will convince you of the continuing reality of framing in our political scene and the power of a strong and plausible frame in setting the political agenda. I hope too it will offer some hints to Labor leaders as they seek to counter and match the Coalition’s skill at framing.

Abbott was a master at framing. He’s gone now from the top job, or we hope he has, but his legacy persists.

Take the ‘Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption’. If the title had not included ‘and Corruption’, it might have been seen as a neutral body assigned the task of examining how unions are managed and governed. But Abbott was determined to frame the Commission’s task as a legal investigation into what he asserted was widespread union corruption. His framing prejudged the outcome. Now that the Commission’s findings are public, Abbott will not be disappointed.

He could have achieved his purpose had the Commission been simply into trade union governance; the terms of reference would have defined the scope of the inquiry. But typically Abbott has...

The pond realises that it's been failing in its duties in relation to meditative Sundays ... we simply haven't been pounding the keyboard hard enough.

This came upon the pond while watching Spotlight last night.

It isn't a particularly good film. The reporters at the Boston Globe are each given haloes, and Mark Ruffalo is given an obligatory intense speech to ensure nominations, while good old Stanley Tucci acts the socks off him. And then there's the banality of the underscore, which frequently delivers bouts of "doing" music to accompany montages of activity (a Christmas carol also performs this duty).

And poor old Rachel McAdams is given the job of becoming a female beagle, such is the intensity of her winsome looks (punters will recall with affection that Anthony Lane awarded Ryan Gosling the title of male beagle when he noted a sure way for the local animal shelter's fund-raising leaflet to raise oodles of money was to have Gosling as the beagle on the cover. It never fails ...)

And yet the sheer enormity of what the Catholic church got up to in Boston, the cover-ups and the abuse, carried the pond through the movie, and made it wonder whether we will ever see the Pellists back in Australia ...

from Prison Books Collective

prison solidarity

Hello Friends and Comrades,

  1. Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for February.(11″x17″ PDF, 838KB) Print it out and plaster your community, both in commemoration of these freedom fighters and to advertise locally for a political prisoner letter writing night. Get together with some friends in your town to send birthday cards to these fighters in our struggle. It’s an easy way to help remind them that they aren’t forgotten. If you make one, remember—don’t use anything like white-out, stickers, tape or glitter on it. We also recommend that you put a return name and address and their name and prisoner number on the card, lest the authorities “lose” the envelope and forget where it is going. If you would like to add a birthday or sign up for our poster mailing list (not a listserv, one email per month), or if you would like to contribute in another way to increasing the profile of US political prisoners, email us at ppbirthday@riseup.net.

In the summer of 2010 I was arrested for a series of arsons I had committed under the moniker of the Animal Liberation Front. A clandestine disorganization that breaks the law to save the lives of Animals and publicize the suffering they endure in the slaughterhouse industry, medical science and research, as well as entertainment and fashion. By the Summer of 2010 the ATF, FBI and Department of Homeland security as well as other local authorities across Colorado and Utah were closing in on me. I had spent the previous decade working peacefully and legally for Animal Rights but had lost patience with a system that will never care about Life in the same way it cares about production, economy and consumption. I took the law into my own hands and was about to reap the consequences.

It was in county jail in Golden, Colorado That I made an earnest prayer in my cell. I guess I should preface this by saying that it was not out of desperation that I made that prayer. My situation was definitely dire as my court cases became a circus of activity. On one side the activist communities were divided about their feelings over me, my crimes of arson and my personal views. And on the other side was the news media, United States government and victims of burnt out...

"IndyWatch Feed Melbourne": ART and ARCHITECTURE, mainly: Alsace's French and German history "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

I have already noted that the most influential art historians during my under-graduate years at Melbourne University were Aby Warburg, Erwin Panofsky, EH Gombrich, Nikolaus Pevsner, Adolf Katzenellenbogen, Fritz Saxl and Rudolf Wittkower. All trained at German-speaking universities, these art historians went on to change Britain's scholarship.

Now let me think about France. In studying Paris’ most loved art dealers, gallery owners, academics and writers from 1870-1940, it occurred to me yet again that so many of them were born in Alsace or had Alsatian parents. Every one of my favourites had a German-sounding surname:

Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann (1809-91) was born in Paris, son of a family that came from Alsace. He became the most famous town-planner and renovator of Paris ever!

Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) was born and raised in Alsace. He was a rapidly rising military officer, until he was court martialled for spying for the Germans and expelled from France. He was later exonerated.

Berthe Weill (1865–1951), art dealer and modernist gallery owner, was born in Paris to an Alsace family.

Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler (1884-1979) was born in Mannheim in Germany and went to Paris to become a fine art historian, art collector and perhaps the leading French dealer of the 20th century.

Ernest Gimpel (1858-1907) was born and educated in Alsace but worked in art with the Wildensteins and the Duveens in Paris and New York. His son René Gimpel (1881-1945) married Lord Joseph Duveen’s sister and became a prominent French art dealer and patron in Paris.

Marc Bloch (1886–1944) was born into an academic family from Alsace. The son of the professor of ancient history, Marc himself became a brilliant medieval historian in Paris.

It is not surprising to read the numerous letters of disapproval of the selection of David Morrison as Australian of the year.

Here we were, the average Australian thinking this award was for achievement over and above the norm, instead we get a person who has by his actions in feminising the armed forces, totally polarised the community.

We have the left wing, latte sipping luvvies swooning with delight that he spent tax payers money funding the operation to turn a man into a woman on one side, and us ordinary folk that believe that the Australian of the year be someone that the whole community could respect.

The only word that comes to mind about the 2016 recipient is a good old Australian colloquialism that rhymes with tanker.

The new Guinness World Record for the 2829-mile (4552km) LA-to-NYC crossing now belongs to Californian Carl Reese who also set six other records in seven months last year.

The above trailer for the documentary shows the emoltional and physical stresses, dramas, police incidences, and tyre and mechanical problems that can plague such a record attempt.

Here are the answers with discussion for the Weekend quiz. The information provided should help you work out why you missed a question or three! If you haven’t already done the Quiz from yesterday then have a go at it before you read the answers. I hope this helps you develop an understanding of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) and its application to macroeconomic thinking. Comments as usual welcome, especially if I have made an error.

Question 1:

Workers can enjoy a stable share of national income over time if they secure wage and salary increases in line with the growth in their contribution to production (labour productivity).

The answer is False.

The share the workers get of GDP (National Income) is called the “wage share”. Their contribution to production is labour productivity.

The wage share in nominal GDP is expressed as the total wage bill as a percentage of nominal GDP. Economists differentiate between nominal GDP ($GDP), which is total output produced at market prices and real GDP (GDP), which is the actual physical equivalent of the nominal GDP. We will come back to that distinction soon.

To compute the wage share we need to consider total labour costs in production and the flow of production ($GDP) each period.

Employment (L) is a stock and is measured in persons (averaged over some period like a month or a quarter or a year.

The wage bill is a flow and is the product of total employment (L) and the average wage (w) prevailing at any point in time. Stocks (L) become flows if it is multiplied by a flow variable (W). So the wage bill is the total labour costs in production per period.

So the wage bill = W.L

The wage share is just the total labour costs expressed as a proportion of $GDP – (W.L)/$GDP in nominal terms, usually expressed as a percentage. We can actually break this do...

Catallaxy Files: How can it still be possible for Hillary Clinton to become president? "IndyWatch Feed Politics.au"

That there has been more controversy around Donald Trump than around Hillary Clinton is further evidence, if more were needed, of the deeply corrupt nature of the media, and the American media in particular. Hillary should go to jail. She illegally used a personal server for her correspondence as Secretary of State because in this way nothing she wrote could be subpoenaed by the American Congress. Instead, every email she sent could be read by governments around the world. Just think of this:

The ex-CIA official said there is “zero ambiguity — none” about the impropriety of SAP-level intelligence being housed on an unsecure private email server. Faddis added that the very existence of that information on her server means that highly classified information must have been moved off of a “completely separate channel” under a process that is “specifically forbidden.” If you had done this while working at the CIA, Hemmer asked, what would’ve happened to you? Faddis’ response: “My career’s over, I lose my clearance, I lose my job, and then I go to prison, probably for a very long time.” Faddis explained that the “consequences are enormous” when information at this level of secrecy is made vulnerable to foreign penetration. “The reason this stuff is in this channel is because it’s going to do incredible damage to US national security if it gets out in the open. That’s why we protect it this way.” When Hemmer inquired whether Hillary’s conduct could have cost lives, Faddis didn’t hesitate. “Absolutely. Without question,” he asserted.

That she protected her husband from harassment charges and highly plausible accusations of rape in order to protect Bill’s presidency and her own political prospects is...

Recently, one of the club’s members, Chris Timewell completed digitising the full set of newsletters. They are a wonderful resource, an absolute treasure trove of information that will prove extremely valuable in the future as we witness changes in our landscape resulting from natural and human induced events. Gold Coast Airport has reached a historical milestone, welcoming in excess of six million passengers through the airport for the 2015 calendar year.

This marks the first time in its history that Gold Coast Airport has facilitated over six million passengers in a twelve month period.

Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Marion Charlton said the strong passenger growth in 2015 was the result of the desirability of Gold Coast and northern NSW as an inbound and outbound destination.

“We welcomed a number of new services in 2015, including Wuhan, Fiji, Avalon, Townsville, Rockhampton and Perth. In addition to that we also welcomed additional capacity on existing routes such as Melbourne.”

“These additions translated into an overall increase in total passengers for the year, driven by a 13.7% growth in long haul international passenger movements and 4.0% growth in domestic passenger movements,” Ms Charlton said.

“The Christmas holiday period is traditionally the busiest time of year for most airports, and as the premier tourist destination in Australia, Gold Coast Airport was no exception.”

“Extra capacity from our airline partners was added over the Christmas and New Year period to accommodate the influx of holiday makers,” Ms Charlton said.

Just imagine if 10,000 homes were to install say 5 KW units with some incentives, (like headwork gifts to developers) then there is a potential for a further 50MW to be added to the system … • Steve in Comments: #19; Mr Harriss; if you have been following this debate on TT, you would be aware that John Lawrence has done a detailed economic assessment which indicates that it’s very improbable that the logging of Lapoinya is going to turn a profit: HERE .You are obviously across the economics of the situation, as indicated by your costings of protest action. Please could you supply a rebuttal of John Lawrence’s analysis, indicating which of John’s assumptions are unreasonable, and why. As a tax payer, I’m concerned that fellow taxpayers, such as the residents of Lapoinya, are forced to suffer the destruction of an area that’s special to them, and all at a net cost to the State. It would be of great value to have the economics of the situation explained in detail. • Derbytas in Comments: … Tasmania has more than a Billion Dollars of Debt, from the building of these dams, still unpaid. The punters of Tasmania have been paying the interest on this debt...

Indigenous Environmental Network: Northwatch, Ontario "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

NorthwatchA founding member of Mining Watch Canada, Northwatch was founded in 1988 to provide a regional voice on environmental concerns in northeastern Ontario. Work over the last two decades has focused on mining, forestry, and energy issues, both at the policy and project level, as well as, successfully campaigning against a series of proposals to bring foreign wastes – solid waste, medical waste, toxic waste, and nuclear waste – for dumping in northeastern Ontario. Northwatch holds a seat on the Ontario Minister’s Mining Act Advisory Committee, and works with local groups and concerned residents, including trade unions and First Nations, in responding to mining-related projects.

"IndyWatch Feed Tas": Tasmanian Times: Government blindness spells doom for an ailing company "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

FRIDAY January 29 ... • Stewart Hoyt, convenor for Forests of Lapoinya Action Group (FLAG): Government Conducts Phoney Forest War ... Adrian’s letter to Joan Rylah: … You stated that you “strongly believe compassion for others is the glue that holds community together” in your maiden speech. If this is how you show compassion, by sticking it to the locals and sticking up for a foreign-owned company? Our small community is destined to go the way of Muenna. Low quality forestry plantations and maybe some dairy, soon after that, just low quality plantations. I wait somewhat apprehensively for your reply, and would very much appreciate a reply from you, not an automatic response or even better, call in for a cup of tea and a chat … • John Biggs in Comments: #19. “Every time a protester enters the coupe at Lapoinya, Forestry Tasmania has to suspend operations in order to protect the safety of workers, and the protester.” Mr Harriss, that is not true. FT doesn’t have to suspend operations. People standing by are not stopping anyone from working, they are not obstructing or damaging machinery. They only “prevent”: people from working because that is your edict. You and FT seem to be deliberately inflaming the issue. TUESDAY January 26 ... When representatives of industry, timber workers and the conservation movement signed an accord back in 2011, some of us hoped Tasmania’s crippling forest wars were over. … When a government is elected, it has a responsibility to govern for all. Will Hodgman should know that hostility towards portfolio stakeholders is no basis for a ministerial career. He should not have put Harriss in charge of forestry operations. But it was the blind leading the blind. The premier has for many years echoed Harriss’s extreme pronouncements. Held captive by their shared ideological spin, Paul Harriss and Will Hodgman have dug themselves a deep, dark hole, and it’s only getting deeper. • Mark Temby in Comments: A...

"IndyWatch Feed Tas": Tasmanian Times: Professor West and the Lone Soldiers of Lapoinya "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

MONDAY, January 25 ... • Stewart Hoyt, 11.30am: At approximately 11 :30 AM Bob Brown and three others walked into the Lapoinya Forest exclusion zone.  Bob Brown and Roger Bradley from Sisters Creek were arrested, two others were escorted out by Tas Police incurring a fine. Bob Brown and Roger Bradley are currently on their way to the Burnie Police Station where they will be processed and bailed. • 8.30am: Stewart Hoyt: Lapoinya under Seige ... By 8:30 this morning, ten vehicles had entered the Lapoinya Forest Coupe. There are Forestry Tasmania reps, Tas Police and contractors. A grader was seen on Nelsons Road in an attempt to breakthrough to Broxhams road in the heart of the community here and turned back … • Paul Harriss in Comments: …Dr Brown is entitled to his day in court, but the law is clear: No protestor is entitled to interfere with the right of other Tasmanians to earn a living. • John Powell in Comments: Minister, you are a liar. FT did NOT compromise on the coupe for conservation reasons. The coupe clear felling area INCREASED from the original 38 ha to 49 ha AFTER community consultation. Of greater interest is why machinery was operating in Lapoinya on a day of Total Fire Ban. Is that not in contravention of FT protocol on such days. Why was that machinery not supporting Fire Tas? SATURDAY, January 23 ... Professor Jonathan West was Chairman of the Independent Verification Group of the Tasmanian Forests Intergovernmental Agreement. His report is on Tasmanian Times HERE. • Frank again, in Comments: John, Most people are ‘over it’, or we can call it cynical, sad, disappointed, deflated just sick of it all. The rape of the once “working” forests, the plunder and the wanton waste, the mining of the unique commercial, social and environmental forest values Tasmania still possessed when we moved here more than 28 years ago are history now. Right now the terrible fires in the NW in the Dip Falls / Pipel...

"IndyWatch Feed Tas": Tasmanian Times: Fires in the Wilderness - the Long Hot Summer Ahead "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Tasmania’s precious World Heritage forests are currently facing the worst crisis in decades. • Bob Brown’s letter to Malcom Turnbull ... • Carol Rea in Comments: Why isn’t there an Aircrane deployed here. Two of these could have made all the difference a few days ago. Now there is a window of opportunity.  Greg Hunt and Malcolm Turnbull need to step up to protect our WH and Tarkine reainforests. There are 6 Aircranes in Australia - three in Victoria. The S64 Aircrane can drop 2,650 gallons (7,500 liters) of water on fires in a single pass. With specialized snorkels, the Aircrane can also refill the tank in nearby bodies of water in less than 30 seconds. Fire Aviation HERE • Guardian: World heritage forests burn as global tragedy unfolds in Tasmania A global tragedy is unfolding in Tasmania. World heritage forests are burning; 1,000-year-old trees and the hoary peat beneath are reduced to char. Fires have already taken stands of king billy and pencil pine – the last remaining fragments of an ecosystem that once spread across the supercontinent of Gondwana. Pockets of Australia’s only winter deciduous tree, the beloved nothofagus – whose direct kin shade the sides of the South American Andes – are now just a wind change away from eternity. Unlike Australia’s eucalyptus forests, which use fire to regenerate, these plants have not evolved to live within the natural cycle of conflagration and renewal. If burned, they die. To avoid this fate, they grow high up on the central plateau where it is too wet for the flames to take hold. But a desiccating spring and summer has turned even the wettest rainforest dells and high-altitude bogs into tinder. Last week a huge and uncharacteristically dry electrical storm flashed its way across the state, igniting the land. While these events have occurred in the past, says David Bowman, a professor of environmental change biology at the University of Tasmania, they were extremely rare, happening perhaps once in...

"IndyWatch Feed Geelong": Barwon Blog: Branching out - silting up "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

On 1st July, 1851 two things occurred which changed the face of the Barwon catchment forever. On that date, Victoria was declared a separate colony from New South Wales and gold was discovered at Clunes on Creswick Creek, a tributary of the Lodden River. Five days later, James Esmond arrived in Geelong with samples of the gold found by himself and his two companions. Two days after that, the Geelong Advertiser published the news. By the end of the month, the Victorian gold rush had begun.

The first gold discovery in the Barwon catchment occurred only weeks after the initial discovery at Clunes on 8th August.
Information board near the site of Hiscock's first gold
discovery, situated roughly opposite the Buninyong Cemetery.
On that day, Thomas Hiscock - a blacksmith who had migrated from England ten years before - discovered gold in a gully which now bears his name, in the Buninyong Ranges west of the town.
Like the many creeks and gullies in the area, Hiscock's Gully ultimately drains into the Yarrowee/Leigh River and empties into the Barwon River at Inverleigh.
