The Ecologist: TTIP: the downfall of European agriculture? "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The TTIP 'trade agreement between the US and the EU would devastate EU farms as it opens them up to competition from larger, less regulated US operations, writes Dario Sarmadi. Catallaxy Files: So what was it related to? "IndyWatch Feed"

Picked up on Instapundit where the story read:

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE “NOT RELATED TO TERRORISM” IN SIDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Sydney Opera House evacuated and Manly ferry cancelled during police operation.

So they can’t spell Sydney in America. This, however, is what they were referring to:

The Sydney Opera House precinct reopened to the public Thursday afternoon after a police operation caused staff and tourists to be evacuated from the landmark.

Police simultaneously conducted an operation across the harbour in Manly as a “precautionary measure” following information on social media.

“Following information on social media, police conducted an operation in the vicinity of the Opera House and Manly as a precautionary measure,” police said.

It is understood the operation, which began just after lunchtime and was over by mid-afternoon, was not related to terrorism.

Well, that’s a relief.

Edo QLD » News: EDO Qld talks (and trains for) #swimforthereef "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

EDO Qld will host a swimathon, Swim For The Reef, at Musgrave Park Pool, South Brisbane on 23 January, to raise funds to continue our successful work with the Great Barrier Reef!

If you are wondering what Swim For The Reef is all about, sit back and enjoy the following Q&A with our CEO/Solicitor – and swimathon participant-in-training – Jo-Anne Bragg.

Why are you hosting a swimathon for the Reef?

We love the Great Barrier Reef and we want to see the Reef and all the marine creatures protected. Plus we want to see clean, green long-term jobs in tourism and fishing.

As your lawyers for the environment, we are raising money to fight for laws that value nature and include meaningful community rights. We also want to run more successful court cases to protect the Reef from some of its greatest threats including dumping of dredge spoil and bad developments.

Plus, it’s all tax deductible!

Why is EDO Qld’s work with Reef important?

The Reef is under threat from excessive development, poor water quality from agricultural run-off, crown of thorn starfish and climate change.

We have seen the importance of EDO lawyers when they ran court cases for conservation groups successfully challenging proposed dredge spoil dumping in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Usually community groups can’t afford lawyers, so non-profit lawyers are so important for Reef protection.

How will the money raised be used?

All funds raised will go directly to the work of EDO Qld, your lawyers for the environment who are driven by a passion for justice and a love of nature.

At EDO Qld, we’re good at making a dollar stretch. In the past, money raised for the Reef has helped us legally represent three conservation groups in separate court cases. These cases contributed to the historic new ban on dump...

Mongabay Environmental News: Rainforest Alliance hires Global Forest Watch head as President "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The Rainforest Alliance, an NGO that pioneered eco-certification as a mechanism for reducing the impact of consumption on the environment, today named Nigel Sizer as its new President. Sizer, an ecologist who has worked with a number of non-profits, is perhaps best known for heading up World Resources Institute's Global Forest Watch, a forest mapping and monitoring platform. Sizer, who will assume the leadership role next month, was publicly welcomed by Daniel Katz, Rainforest Alliance founder and board chair. “With the recent Paris Agreement underlining the crucial role forests play in fighting climate change, the world is keenly aware that we must work together to ensure forests are conserved and carefully managed for the survival of people and our planet,” said Daniel Katz, Rainforest Alliance founder and board chair, in a statement. “Nigel has seen first-hand the vital connection between sustainable land-use and forests. Now is the ideal time for a leader with his track record to lead the Rainforest Alliance at this critical point in our history, as we resolve to build on our mission to protect biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods around the globe.” Rainforest Alliance's focus on certification is consistent with Sizer's work on Global Forest Watch, which has become an important tool for companies to do risk assessments on the commodities they source. The platform includes in-depth data on palm oil, logging, and wood fiber concessions in several countries as well as information on certified mills and plantations. "IndyWatch Feed Qld": Motorbike Writer: How to lose weight riding motorcycles "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Lose weight

We all put on a bit of weight over the Christmas and New Year holidays, but did you know you can lose weight while riding your motorbike?

It seems strange because most riding is a sedentary and social recreation. However, an 80kg rider will burn 40 more calories an hour riding a motorbike than driving a car.

There doesn’t seem like much exercise involved in sitting on a bike and we usually do it with our friends, which turns into a long lunch while “bench racing”. It’s not good for the waistline and your health.

However, since losing weight is simply a matter of using more energy than we consume, there are a few simple steps to follow to ensure you at least don’t put on weight while pursuing your favourite recreation.

1 Riding

Research has shown that sitting on a bike requires no more physical exercise than gently pedalling a bicycle. Yet, Sports Illustrated listed motocross as the fourth most physically demanding sports behind hockey, soccer and wrestling.

Clearly, there are different levels of activity required for different types of riding.

If you’re into motocross, then that’s fine, go and do lots of it. Imagine how many calories...

"IndyWatch Feed Qld": "IndyWatch Feed": The Thousands: Brisbane: My Pretty Little Sydney: A guide inspired by Grayson Perry "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

This summer Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art Australia is hosting Grayson Perry: My Pretty Art Career. The bustling, bombastic survey of Grayson Perry’s work reads like a technicolour patchwork of social observations. The artist charmingly digs into the class and sexual politics of Britain and is a passionate observer of his home country’s ‘taste tribes’. Vespa riders whizz through suburbs, iPads nestle into coffee tables and tattooed backs hunch reverently over football jerseys. These emblems of cultural accoutrements are most apparent in the whoppin’ tapestries from Grayson’s TV series All In The Best Possible Taste – the crux of his anthropological journey rendered in affectionate thread. On show you can see these tapestries and a mountain of Grayson’s signature ceramics, bedazzled costumes for Claire (his female alter ego), etchings, photographs and more. The show is as autobiographical as it is sociological.

Just like the vibrant characters swirling together on Grayson Perry’s elaborate work, Sydney has its fair share of idiosyncrasies. Some might call it tacky, some whine about it’s obsession with tanning, and we all know they never shut-up about their bloody harbour, yet the glittering masterpiece never loses it’s spark. Sydney sure is a gaudy showbag full of diverse tastes: the cheap, the posh and the weird.

If you’re heading to Sydney and not a fan of traipsing up the harbour bridge you’re in luck, The Thousands and the MCA have teamed up to bring you an alternative. An imagined romp through the city, from sandstone castles to warehouses full of rubbish, My Pretty Little Sydney dips a pinky into the pools of Grayson-inspired opulence, grime, kitsch and refinement that co-exist off the map. See the exhibition and then delve into the fictional ‘taste tribes’ of Sydney, collecting trinkets and experiences like Pokemon or stamps, whatever you’re into.

"IndyWatch Feed Northcoast": Echonetdaily: Zionists given a free pass "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

Hans Lovejoy, editor of the Byron Shire Echo, posted on Facebook today that a local Israeli business owner is calling him an antisemite for publishing letters critical of Israel and is contemplating boycotting The Echo. No doubt the letters referred to include ones by Gareth Smith and Bassam and Anne Shomali.

Welcome to the club, Hans, of those who refuse to be bowed by the Zionist lobby – whose main work is to whitewash the crimes of the state of Israel and are labelled ‘antisemites’ for this reason. It’s clear there are many Zionists living and working in the northern rivers region. These Zionist fanatics equate criticism of Israel with criticism of Jews, forgetting that the severest critics of Zionism are Jews themselves, as they have seen the best libertarian and radical traditions of Judaism perverted by Zionism and watched Israel descend into Jewish fascism.

For too long, these local Zionists have been given a free pass, largely due to the a-political, apathetic and downright naive attitude of most folk living the sun-kissed life in the rainbow region. However, due to the courageous, decades-long resistance of Palestinians, due to the brave Israelis who speak out against apartheid Israel, due to social media like Facebook and to the efforts of independent media like The Echo, this veil of ignorance is being rent asunder. And Zionists don’t like what the rest of the world can witness, minus their hasbara. They will do their damnedest to stop the flow of information, using their power to prevent the truth from being known, even if it’s in the form of a letter to the editor.

It’s bizarre that the Zionist interlocutor should compared Hans to Rupert Murdoch – an arch-Zionist himself. Or want to boycott The Echo. It’s bizarre, because, more and more, it’s Zionist Israel that’s being boycotted via the very successful global, civil society Boycott, Disinvestments and Sanctions movement (BDS). Whether it’s the United M...

Catallaxy Files: Uber for Labour (not Labor) "IndyWatch Feed"

Under the warm and fuzzy thematic of “innovation”, the Turnbull Government has let it be known that risk is good, entrepreneurship is good and agility (whatever that may be) is good.  These virtues are good everywhere except Canberra that is.

Canberra notwithstanding, let’s not get too excited here.  The Government’s rhetoric seems to suggest that innovation, agility and entrepreneurship is a means to foster economic growth and to increase productivity.  Sadly through, the dull hand of over regulation will continue to limit the opportunities and benefits of innovation and entrepreneurship in Australia.  For example, many opportunities will be closed off given labour market productivity opportunities are broadly coded out of the system.  This is a major reason why, many of the new business opportunities promoted by the Government will be labour-lite.  That is they don’t and won’t employ many people, particularly low skilled labour.

Governments are increasingly welcoming new “innovative” business models like Uber, but are vehemently reluctant to create opportunities through regulatory equivalence to other parts of the market.

In the case of Uber, unlike taxi drivers, Uber drivers work the hours they want to work and don’t have their hours determined by regulators.  Uber also has a very interesting approach to price discovery via its surge pricing model.  And this is where it gets interesting.

In periods when demand exceeds supply, regulated taxi drivers are forced to keep charging the regulated price leaving, doing nothing to better meet supply or reduce demand.

Uber on the other hand has (claims to have) sophisticated algorithms that can adjust the price of taxi travel when demand exceeds supply.  A price variation, usually an increase in price can attract more supply (additional drivers) and shake out demand.  This allows the market to clear, or at least near clear.

Consider if the Uber model was extended to the labour ma...

"IndyWatch Feed Qld": Motorbike Writer: Legal marijuana makes dopey riders "IndyWatch Feed Allstate"

Only dopes ride high! marijuana

Only dopes ride high!

In the wake of several USA states legalising medical marijuana the American Motorcycle Safety Foundation has introduced a marijuana awareness kit to show the effects of the drug.

The MSF says marijuana “tends to distort perception of time, space, and speed” making it dangerous for riders, as well as illegal.

“This is especially true for motorcycle riders, who must continually make detailed assessments of complex traffic situations and make split-second decisions requiring precise rider input to navigate safely and maintain an adequate safety margin,” the organisation says.

They previously produced an alcohol awareness kit which includes “beer goggles” that replicate the effects of being drunk.

Bill Mitchell – billy blog: Australian labour market – goes backwards again "IndyWatch Feed"

Today’s release of the – Labour Force data – for December 2015 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show a labour market in retreat. Total employment growth was a negative (barely) and labour force participation fell marginally. While total unemployment declined, it was only due to the fact that the labour force shrank by more than employment contracted, which means that actual unemployment was substituted for hidden unemployment. The data continues to strain credibility with some quite bizarre monthly shifts. The cautious position is to look at the trend over the last several months and that suggests that the labour market has improved marginally. However, the teenage labour market remains very weak with no discernible upwards trend revealing itself yet. If the forecasted decline in private investment occurs over the next 12 months, then this modest improvement in the labour market over the last six months will not persist.

The summary ABS Labour Force (seasonally adjusted) estimates for December 2015 are:

  • Employment decreased 1,000 (0.0 per cent) with full-time employment increasing by 17,600 and part-time employment falling by 18,500.
  • Unemployment decreased by 10,900 to 727,500.
  • The official unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 5.8 per cent.
  • The participation rate decreased 0.1 percentage points to 65.1 per cent. It is still well below its November 2010 peak (recent) of 65.9 per cent.
  • Aggregate monthly hours worked increased 0.3 million hours (0.02 per cent).
  • The quarterly ABS broad labour underutilisation estimates (the sum of unemployment and underemployment) were updated last month. Underemployment was at 8.4 per cent and total labour underutilisation rate was at 14.3 per cent. There were 1,051.2 thousand persons und...

Senator Jacqui Lambie - PUTTING TASMANIA FIRST: Lambie slams Liberals for racist slur and demands greater scrutiny of money from non-democratic China "IndyWatch Feed"

Independent Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie has called on Liberal leaders Premier Will Hodgman and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to discipline Tasmanian state Liberal Minister Rene Hidding, who inferred yesterday there were racist undertones in her stance against the sale of Van Diemens Land (VDL) Company to a Chinese company.

“Yesterday during the debate surrounding the sale of VDL, we saw the same kind of sly, dishonest, cheap political shots that were leveled at opponents, (including myself) of the China Free Trade Agreement.

“These low personal criticisms from Liberal politicians are simply designed to shut down debate and limit public scrutiny of investment from China, which a ABC Four Corners report found is very different and dangerous from investment from democratic countries like Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and America,” Senator Lambie said.

“Liberal politicians especially, are quick to use the race card and personal attacks in these debates, in order to cover up what the ABC Four Corners report found, namely that:

There are hidden dangers in doing business with China: endemic corruption; a lack of transparency in both business and the legal system, and questions about where the money is coming from and whether ill-gotten gains are being laundered.

“Liberal Politicians like Tasmanian MP Rene Hidding don’t want a critical public debate and investigation of foreign investment money that is linked to China and the Chinese communist government for a couple of important reasons:

“Firstly, the Aus...

10:17 The Question if Satanist Doug Mesner/Lucien Greaves Is Watching My Blog Is Now Answered "IndyWatch Feed National"

Apparently I was wrong when I said that the Satanic Temple is tax exempt- and would like to apologize. I just received this email from him an hour ago- and was amused that this guy can say all the libelous crap he does about me online- but whines like a bitch if I say anything wrong about him. So I am making this correction- the Satanic Temple I guess is NOT tax free. But if there is any question whether or not these attacks- all using Doug Mesner’s crap- are unknown to the satanist- I guess we all now know they aren’t. But at his request- I will state that according to Doug Mesner/satanist Lucien Greaves- according to what he said in an interview with Salon- the Satanic Temple is not tax free.

Here is his email….

1:19 PM (1 hour ago)

to me
David, I’m giving you an opportunity to correct yourself online.
You state:

“He is running a tax free church- using the money to throw lavish parties and support his lifestyle while pushing every one he can to join so that he can bilk money out of them. He made so much from this that he was able to build an 8 foot statue of the devil- which, by the way, no one wants to display, which is why its whereabouts are presently unknown.”

The Satanic Temple (TST) is neither tax-exempt, nor do we charge for membership. Membership fees, being nonexistent, did not fund the monument. The monument was transparently crowd-funded. All of this is public information. In fact, you wrote about a Salon piece that covered TST on your blog where you also made the claim that we are defrauding people and that we are tax-exempt. If you had even read the Salon piece in question, you’d see that it’s stated RIGHT IN THAT VERY PIECE that we reject tax-exemption on principled grounds. You can go to The Satanic Temple’s website and see that there is no fee to join.

Correct your slanderous statements.

EARTHblog: More solar, fewer blue flames, safer communities, better climate "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Natural gas is not cleaner than coal.

But thanks to boatloads of advertising and campaign contributions, oil and gas lobbyists has convinced many politicians, including President Obama, that replacing coal with natural gas is a viable way to stave off catastrophic climate change.

But it isn’t. The now-famous Aliso Canyon methane leak, its impacts on thousands of residents of nearby Porter Ranch, and its damage to the climate is just the latest and most public example showing that we need to keep natural gas in the ground, not burn it.

The oil and gas industry’s argument for natural gas boils down to this: to generate electricity, burning natural gas is cleaner than burning coal. While that is true, it’s only part of the story. But it’s the only part industry tells because it’s the only part they like. Unfortunately for all of us, though, natural gas is far more than just a replacement utility-scale fossil fuel.

SoCalGas, a division of Sempra Energy, provides natural gas not just to power plants, but to 21 million customers in Southern California. “Now you’re cooking with gas,” is the Bob Hope adage from the 30’s and 40’s as natural gas began to be piped into homes for heating and cooking. To look at it another way, the leaking Aliso Canyon gas storage facility supplies millions of kitchen ovens with the blue...

More than 4000 people have signed a petition calling on the NSW Police to immediately end their flawed roadside drug testing operations.

The petition wants police to replace the regime with an evidence-based scheme that reliably tests for impairment and that covers all the drugs, legal and illegal, that pose the greatest risk for road safety.

Greens MP David Shoebridge.

The petition, started by Greens MLC David Shoebridge, is directed at the NSW Police Minister Troy Grant, and the NSW Police Force.

Mr Showbridge maintains that the current roadside drug-testing regime is arbitrary, invasive and has no relationship to the impairment of drivers.

A new $277,000 vessel for the Point Danger Marine Rescue fleet will be officially commissioned today in a ceremony involving local, state and federal government representatives.

The rescue organisation has hailed the new 7.5m rigid-hull inflatable boat named Point Danger 20, as a major boost to boating safety on north coast waterways.

Head of Marine Rescue NSW, commissioner Stacey Tannos, said the ‘state-of-the-art vessel, which is able to travel up to 15 nautical miles offshore, further strengthens Marine Rescue’s strategic search and rescue safety net covering the NSW coastline’.

’It is the latest of 65 new and refurbished vessels delivered to date, at a cost of almost $15 million, under our landmark fleet modernisation program,’ commissioner Tannos said.

‘Providing safe, modern and reliable vessels is the greatest investment we can make in the safety of our volunteers and the boaters we assist.’

Earth First! Newswire: Six Lessons From How the FBI and Media Treat Militia Groups "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

by Will Potter / Green is the New Red

potter-militia-interviewIn a recent TV interview (below), I was asked to discuss how the mainstream media has been covering the militia standoff in Oregon, as heavily-armed Bundy gang members occupy federal land.

We didn’t have much time to go into all the details, so I wanted to elaborate here, with what I think are six of the most important lessons we should be learning from how the government and the press have treated militia groups like this one.

1.) Unarmed black men (and children) are viewed as more dangerous than armed white militias.

I think this is glaring to most reasonable viewers, but it has largely gone unmentioned in media coverage of the standoff. Tamir Rice was shot and killed by police, just seconds after they arrived on the scene, becau...

COMMUNITIES near the abandoned Sinivit gold mine in East New Britain are warned not to interfere with relics, ruins and rubbish left at the mine site following the departure of project developer New Guinea Gold Ltd.
Provincial administrator and disaster committee chairman Wilson Matava said fiddling around with these leftovers could endanger the lives of people and their environment.
“The mine has been closed since July 2014. Last year, locals reportedly looted and vandalised properties, including explosives and dangerous chemicals from the vats,” Matava said.
Matava urged the people of Dadul, Riet and Uramot to stay clear of the mine site area.
He said there were also reports of dangerous chemicals from the abandoned vats seeping into the Warangoi River.
“The destruction of buildings and theft of materials, which act as barriers of the 17 vats used to extract gold and other minerals, have heightened the risks for locals and their environment.”
Matava said the Mineral Resources Authority and Conservation and Environment Protection Authority had been working with the East New Britain administration to contain the potential contamination of the environment.

Brisbane, AAP  – A southeast Queensland man charged with terror-related offences is set to face a Brisbane court.

Agim Kruezi, 23, is facing seven charges over allegations he stockpiled weapons in preparation for a terrorist act in Australia, was preparing for incursions into war-torn Syria, and recruited people to join that fight.

His case is due to be mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

Kruezi was arrested along with 32-year-old Omar Succarieh during counter-terrorism raids in Brisbane and Logan in September 2014.

Succarieh, a former Islamic Centre bookstore owner, is also on remand after he was last month committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

He is facing three charges over allegations he helped arrange for Kruezi to join the fight in Syria and sent money to aid the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist group.

"IndyWatch Feed Northcoast": Echonetdaily: US well ahead on drug law reform "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

As the NSW Greens’ drugs and harm minimisation spokesperson, I will in the coming days embark on a self-funded fact-finding trip to the United States, in part to meet with leading drug law reform experts, advocates and campaigners.

Numerous states in the US, both progressive and conservative, have been leading drug law reform efforts for some years now. Some have even regulated the use of cannabis.

They have framed policy not to treat drug users as criminals, but rather to look at the issue from health and social perspectives, in order to reduce harm and save lives.

Some American jurisdictions allow pill-testing at music festivals and concerts, so I will be investigating the successes and processes involved with those programs.

There is a real mood for change in Australia now, and it’s imperative we look at where reform efforts are happening around the world to determine the best way forward at home.

I look forward to meeting with representatives from established groups such as the Drug Policy Alliance, and also activists and campaigners on the ground about their work.

I will also meet with relevant groups and individuals in California and Oregon.

We All Live Downstream: Two Visions "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

Congress_National_Capitol_Building_Reflected_SmallerBy Michael Kelly, Communications Director – On Twitter: @MichaelEdKelly

Congress has barely been in session for two weeks. Unsurprisingly, the House has continued its streak of standing up for corporate polluters at the expense of the American people. Two of the first votes of this session put our water, our health, and our economy at risk.

Yesterday the House passed HR 1644. HR 1644 will gut the Department of the Interior’s Stream Protection Rule and allow more waste from mountain top removal coal mining to be dumped in streams throughout Appalachia and other coal mining regions. The Stream Protection Rule is an important step that ensures mining communities don’t become sacrifice zones. It makes sure that these communities have access to clean water and a healthy environment, especially after mining operations are over. It requires more of mining companies. But big coal doesn’t like being held accountable for its activities, and its allies on Congress made sure they won’t be.

Following the vote on HR 1644, the House passed SJ Res 22 today. SJ Res 22 was passed by the Senate in late 2015 and repeals the Clean Water Rule, which ensures that streams and wetlands throughout the nation are protected by the Clean Water Act. For years these streams and wetlands, and the drinking water sources they feed, were at risk of pollution and destruction. And when the Obama administration finally acted to safeguard these vital resources, th...

London, RAW – The chancellor of Oxford University has joined Tony Abbott in warning against rewriting history, in his first public comments on a student campaign to remove a statue of 19th century colonialist Cecil Rhodes from one of the university’s colleges.

Inspired by protests at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, which led to its statue of Rhodes being removed last April, the ‘Rhodes Must Fall in Oxford’ campaign says the statue at Oriel College in England celebrates a brutal racist.

Former Australian prime minister Abbott, himself an ex-Rhodes scholar, waded into the Oxford dispute in an email to British newspaper The Independent in December.

‘The students of Oriel should be clear-eyed about Rhodes’ faults and failings but proud of his achievements,’ Abbott wrote.

‘The university should remember that its mission is not to reflect fashion but to seek truth, and that means striving to understand before rushing to judge.’

The dispute is one of a growing number of university controversies over issues of history and identity, often pitting freedom of speech arguments against demands for symbols deemed offensive by some students to be removed.

In the United States, southern campuses have been rocked by arguments over the confederate flag, while at Yale a row erupted when an academic pushed back against suggestions that students should self-censor Halloween costumes...

Responding to news Australia was approached late last year by the US for more military help but declined to increase its contribution, Mr Andrews reiterated his push for ground troops.

‘If the Americans have made a reasonable request of us, then we should be giving it the most favourable consideration,’ he told ABC radio on Thursday.

Despite the request, defence minister Marise Payne remained firm on Australia’s existing level of assistance.

‘Australia has considered the request … in light of the substantial contributions we are already making to train Iraqi security forces and to the air campaign,’ a spokesman told AAP in a statement.

Mr Andrews said Ms Payne has information before her that he doesn’t anymore.

Melbourne, AAP – The jobs market is expected to have weakened in December, after enjoying the best two months of employment growth in almost 28 years.

The number of Australians with a job is forecast to have fallen by 5,000 in December, and the unemployment rate is expected to have risen to 5.9 per cent, according to an AAP survey of 12 economists.

In November, jobs growth was 71,400, after a 56,000 rise in October, the strongest two-month period of employment growth since the 1980s.

That sent the unemployment rate to its lowest level in almost two years, to 5.8 per cent in November.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will release its December employment report on Thursday.

JP Morgan chief economist Stephen Walters said the November figures were exaggerated by the ABS survey methods but added that the employment market is still strong.

‘Recent labour force surveys have looked too good to be true,’ Mr Walters said.

‘Although we have become increasingly optimistic on the labour market outlook, given the upbeat signals from job ads, business surveys and government welfare data, the official data still appear too firm relative to gross domestic product growth.’

Firstly: DJ Helmy’s sound is of rhythm. No, not that ‘doof doof’ shit getting around these days by button-pushing DJs. We’re talking drums, an organic flavour of soulful rhythms on turntables. Think classic, timeless songs and new must-have grooves, not non-stop ‘doof doof’ loops. Think reggae, hip-hop, funk, rock, retro, jazz, blues, roots, swing, soul!

Think 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, Noughtys, New! Think live music venues, beergardens, chilled lounges, hip bars, head nodding conversations, laughter, singalongs. Think people connecting on a real level, not horny youth out on the prowl at nightclubs. Again, think soul!

Emerging from earlier years spent as a drummer for rock bands and a hand percussion tutor, DJ Helmy’s style of seamlessly mixing genres of known and lesser-known tracks from around the globe over the past 60-ish years, coupled with tight and colourful arrays of scratching, assures crowds that skilled vinyl DJs are still alive and kicking. DJ Helmy is known to most as Triple J favourite; Illy’s tour scratch DJ and backup/hype MC, co-founder and DJ of Beats Working (Obese Records), as well as having deejayed for iconic Melbourne names including Lotek, Elf Tranzporter, Candice Monique, MoneyKat, Syntax, Jamima Jones plus many more. Food-BalancedDiet-shutterstock_SMALL-28738102SYDNEY [AAP] Eating healthier is a good start to being a better sport. One way to getter a better dietary intake is to reduce the amount you eat. Using smaller plates may help lose any extra kilos gained over the festive season, say researchers.

Varying the size of our plate has a considerable effect on the amount of food we eat, according to a Deakin University meta-analysis of 56 studies involving 3,507 participants. But that’s only if we serve up the food ourselves or if the supplied portion has been varied in line with the plate size.

The study was published in the inaugural issue of the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research.

It found that a doubling of plate size increased the amount self-served or the amount consumed by 41 per cent.

But the plate size had no effect on the amount consumed if the dishes contained the same portion size.

Plate size was found to have a stronger effect when participants were unaware they were taking part in a food study.

Professor Chris Dubelaar said one reason people are eating more is because portions, plates and packages are larger.

‘Continual use of smaller plate sizes may be both habit forming and good for our health’, he said.

"IndyWatch Feed Northcoast": Echonetdaily: Labor and its carbon scheme myth "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

History, according to Napoleon Bonaparte, is a myth that we decide to agree upon.

Paul Spooner’s letter last week, which uses the localisation agenda to bash the Greens, is a good example of how myths become accepted history.

According to Paul and other green Labor luminaries like Greg Combet and Julia Gillard (irony intended), when the Greens voted against Labor’s carbon pollution reduction scheme (CPRS) in 2009 they established themselves as environmental vandals.

But we might read the history of this period in a different light. The Greens sunk the CPRS because Labor – in their effort to appease Australia’s big carbon polluters – had diluted Ross Garnaut’s scheme to such an extent that it was environmentally useless. The fear was that it would only lock in failure.

The Gillard government’s subsequent legislation – which finally put a price on carbon in 2012 – was far from perfect. But it was much stronger than the earlier CPRS legislation which was a thinly veiled blueprint for business as usual.

Importantly, the package of measures whose centerpiece was a ‘carbon tax’ was legislated at the insistence of the Greens. They made it a condition for supporting the minority Labor government who had, prior to the 2010 election, decided that climate action was just too hard.

Only in Labor mythology did the Greens set environmental protection ‘back a decade’ when they voted against the CPRS in 2009.

Here & Now 140 picS Sorrensen

My place. Tuesday, 8.30am

Why don’t you have a tap at the sink?’ Granddaughter asks, watching the stainless steel bucket fill from a hot water tap in the breezeway. The tin roof pops in the morning heat. Startled, she looks up.

‘What’s that?’ she asks.

So many questions.

Summer is here. Finally.

It’s only early and already the sun is a fierce monster, hanging over the eastern ridge, drooling UV, the dappled shade caused by the iron barks barely muting the sun’s leery aggression.

Ah, the Australian summer. Barbecues and beer, beer and beach. Celebration of an Australian lifestyle that delivers a smug but fragile nationalism, liver degeneration and melanoma. As summer burns towards Australia day, the beer coolers are decorated with the Australian flag, people lie baking on Australian flag beach towels, and the meat industry is using Australia’s penchant for war as a marketing tool. (Come on, 15 years of war-making is a penchant.)

Patriotism is on the rise. This makes politicians and merchandisers happy, but makes me nervous. I don’t think it’s healthy for Granddaughter.

I am not, of course, at the beach. I’m at home.

‘The sun makes the metal on the roof hot and it expands. That makes the creaky noise.’

My shack under the cliffs is a shady retreat from the debilitations of propaganda, merchandising and oi oi oi. Apart from the rise and fall of the cicada chorus, the popping roof and a distant brushcutter engaged in the constant war against grass, all is quiet on the western...

On 10 January 2016 SBS (Australian multicultural television) screened Martin Smith's Inside Assad’s Syria. Australia is blatantly aligned with US-NATO forces that seek to remove the Syrian Government and Australian media propaganda means that we don't usually hear from the other side. Surprisingly Smith interviewed many supporters of the Assad Government and the Syrian Arab Army. But it was as if, to get this other view onto SBS the [almost theatrically grim-faced, suspicious and disapproving] journalist had to use some standard anti-Assad techniques:

No Right Turn: An attack on our democracy "IndyWatch Feed"

That's the only way to describe the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's new policy of charging for all OIA requests:

Journalists who make requests for official information from government agencies are used to lengthy delays and lots of blacked-out pages.

Hefty invoices, like the $651 estimate received by Fairfax business journalist Richard Meadows this week for an Official Information Act (OIA) request to the Reserve Bank, are much rarer.

Meadows was informed by the Reserve Bank that charging media for requests was now its "standard policy", rather than a one-off.

This is part of a wider problem. Back in December outgoing chief Ombudsman Beverley Wakem effectively recommended that agencies make wider use of charges, and especially, that they should charge media agencies and Members of Parliament, despite the clear public interest and democratic value of their requests. And the Ministry of Justice is reportedly following along with a review of the current charging regime. The expectation is that charging is going to become a lot more common - or, to put it another way, public information is going to become a lot less available, and Ministers and public servants a lot less accountable. Good for them, but bad for our democracy.

But its not just bad for our democracy. As Jacinda Ardern points out, this is our information, and departments should be making it available to us. Instead, they'll be using charges to deter requests and keep it secret.

In anticipation of these changes, I've just OIA's every core government department seeking information for the last financial year on their total number of requests, the number of times they have demanded and been paid...

Dear Facebook,

I love you. I really do. When I lived eight hours away from my family and twelve hours away from my friends, you made it so easy (and affordable) to keep in contact with everyone.

However, recently, I’ve realised that you are letting me down – and other women – on a continual basis.

Well, according to your Community Standards, Facebook is designed to “keep you safe”. (Yes, I know we all need to be realistic in regards to “safe”. If you post a naked photo, it’s the internet, it’ll never come down. If you criticise your boss, and he or she sees it, they may fire you. “Safe” is a relative term; but please, bear with me.) We can report people and their content can be removed and disabled if we are being threatened, harassed and abused – among other things (like hate speeches and symbols).

Supposedly, according to your standards, you work to “encourage respectful behaviour”.

However, when I reported a man’s threatening, abusive and racist behaviour (on behalf of another woman), your review came back saying you found that his comments didn’t violate the community standards you say you uphold.

Don’t believe me?

I took screenshots.

Bill Mitchell – billy blog: The co-option of government by transnational organisations "IndyWatch Feed"

Today, some more analysis of the debate about globalisation and the capacities of the nation-state. We consider the debates in the early 1970s about the power of transnational corporations and the claims that they undermined the capacity of the nation-state to further the interests of the population. On the one hand, the free-market liberals claimed that the emergence of the transnational corporation was a move towards increased global efficiency and the nation-state, which served narrower interests, would be swept aside, along with its regulative structures, by this trend. Global welfare (and solutions to international poverty) would be maximised by the demolition of national borders by transnational capitalism. This view considered the nation-state to be ‘dispensable’ – that it only served narrow interests and the global organisation of production no longer required national governments to operate in this way. The Marxist position was, understandably, at odds with this view. It considered the nation-state to be indispensable to the growing needs of international capital. This was in the sense that governments could provide essential stability to reduce the risk of transnational operations. My position is more in line with the latter view although it clearly recognises the relevance (and power) of the national governments in which they choose to operate. Further, these transnational corporations are typically very large firms within the nations they operate. it is hard to differentiate the political clout that being large exerted from the influence of being global. Certainly, the early literature was not clear on that issue.

"IndyWatch Feed Gippsland": Mountain Journal: Helping trees flee climate change "IndyWatch Feed Alllocal"

This article from the Canadian based magazine called The Walrus got me thinking. We know that climate science predicts that some species will migrate ‘uphill’ to try and find the climatic conditions they can flourish in as the temperature warms. This could see some sub alpine and alpine species becoming extinct as they face stiff competition from new species moving into their traditional range and with Australia only having mountains of low elevation, some species could simply be pushed off the top of the ranges.

There are various research projects looking at how climate change is likely to impact on native species in the Alps. The best chance we have to save alpine species in the wild is to reduce future warming through meaningful mitigation efforts (ie we need to stop polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases). But what about the warming that has already happened, and the future warming we are locked into as a result of previous carbon which has been released into the atmosphere? How much ‘room’ do we have for species that are already existing towards the top of their range, with limited space to migrate upwards?

This story from Canada raises the notion of ‘assisted migration’ for vegetation.

Some key points from the story:

  • A study by the United States Forest Service into the whitebark pine predicts that 97% of it’s current distribution will be too hot for the species after 2100, le...

The idea is that it allows riders to filter through the traffic and safely gather in an area in front of the stop line for cars.

Currently, only one or two motorcycles can filter through traffic and slip in front of the cars.

17:45 The Opposition is so Obsessed with Me and With What I Am Doing that They Have Made Two Videos of Me Just This Last Week Alone "IndyWatch Feed National"

I guess some guy who calls himself Vileance on YouTube has become so obsessed with me as of late that he has sat down and spent the time making two videos of me trying to trash me. Funny- I have never done this before- and don’t know anyone who has- but according to him and his little group- they obviously find this normal and acceptable. I actually have no idea what is in these videos because I have never bothered to sit down and watch them. Frankly- I don’t really care enough to do so. But something tells me that they aren’t going to win any awards anytime soon.

So why is all of this really being done? Because this little group doesn’t want anyone to consider what I am saying and are hoping that if they do their best to slaughter the messenger that what I am saying will be lost in the process. So what is my message? It is pretty simple- a huge, organized, and well-funded group of pedophiles are raping and killing kids and making inordinate amounts of money doing so. This little group- they don’t want anyone to believe this. So they are waging some weird social media campaign against me- sitting at their computers obsessing over me as they make little YouTube videos and do their best to attack me online with nasty comments. They believe that if they do this- and make it all about me- people will ignore the things we all know to be true and focus solely on me. Of course- as they do this little obsessive thing they have going- they also complain incessantly that I am an “attention whore”. However- judging by the fact that they have made two videos about me in the last week- it is THEY who are focused on me and unable to stop themselves from giving me attention. Did I ask for this? No. All I have asked for is that this pedophile ring that is raping and killing children gets the attention it so desperately needs in order to stop it. This group- however- is doing everything they can think of to prevent this from happening.

I find it amus...

A WORRYING appearance of Shepparton’s wellbeing has been revealed in The Yearbook 2015: Progress in Australian Regions, recently released by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development.

THE re-enactment of the birth of Christ and the singing of Christmas carols may soon fall quiet in the corridors of public schools throughout the state, with the Victorian Government releasing their new detailed guidelines for special religious instruction (SRI).
The guidelines, which will see certain religious programs scrapped from mainstream teaching this year, state that government schools must not promote any particular religious practice, denomination or sect, and must be open to adherents of any philosophy, religion or faith.
As part of this, any group seeking to facilitate, lead or provide instruction in programs that are based on distinctive religious tenets and beliefs must conduct the teachings either during lunch time or out-of-school hours, where this is provided by the school and supervised by school staff.

Greater Shepparton Lighthouse is leading plans to establish a youth hub after it was identified as a priority by many of the people who took part in the recent 1,000 Conversations consultation.
A forum will be held on Tuesday, January 19 from 4pm to 6pm, at Wesley Hall in Maude Street, Shepparton, to give young people the chance to have input into planning for the hub.
Lighthouse Executive Officer, Lisa McKenzie is encouraging young people to come along and have their say on the elements they would like to see in a local youth centre.
“There are so many options and there is the opportunity to create something that uniquely suits our municipality. A place to study and work with tutors and mentors, somewhere to learn and practice music, a centre to access information and services, or a place to relax. The choices are wide and varied and we want to understand what would best serve our young people,’’ Mrs McKenzie said.
She pointed out that there was no funding or site yet identified for the hub but there was a strong desire in the community to bring the project to fruition.
“Where there is a will there is a way and if this is what our young people and their families are asking for, then we will give it our best shot to deliver,’’ Mrs McKenzie said.

Minister O’Dwyer said that the ACCC is currently investigating any potential risk of injury to consumers as a result of using hoverboards.

“The ACCC investigation will assess whether the hoverboards will or may cause injury to consumers and whether any regulatory action may be required.

“I encourage consumers to follow ACCC advice and check the recalls website to see if their product or charger has been recalled. Details can be found on the Recalls Australia website:

“The ACCC is continuing to coordinate recalls of non-compliant products and has provided consumer safety information on the Recalls Australia and Product Safety Australia websites.”

State and territory regulators, who manage electrical safety, are currently investigating if the chargers being supplied with hoverboards meet Australian electrical safety standards.

The Safety Warning Notice is available on the Product Safety Australia website:

Vulnerable students to remain a priority in Shepparton

HELP FOR STRUGGLING STUDENTS… Kildonan UnitingCare Team Leader Child and Family Services, Vicki Huggard. Photo: David Lee.

IMPROVING educational outcomes and helping vulnerable students stay at school will remain a priority in Shepparton following news the state government will continue to fund the School Focused Youth Service (SFYS).
The Department of Education and Training has announced the SFYS, which began in Shepparton in 1998 and is co-ordinated by Kildonan UnitingCare, will be funded again for another two years.
Kildonan’ Chief Executive Officer, Stella Avramopoulos said the funding will allow Kildonan,’ education and community stakeholders to build on their previous work.
“Like many regional communities, there are challenges in ensuring young people remain engaged in education, employment or training.
“Kildonan’s SFYS team has addressed attendance issues by partnering with the Bridge Youth Service to provide tailored support for at-risk young people; we have held forums and provided professional development opportunities for school staff; we have provided transition support for vulnerable young people in Cobram who are starting secondary school this year.
“This funding means there will be ongoing resources to support vulnerable students in partnership with schools and the community, and it will give us the opportunity to develop a new plan focusing on young people who are at risk of disengaging from school.”...

09:16 Australia’s SECOND Royal Commission Regarding Extreme Child Abuse Issues Involved- Once Again- In a Cover-Up- Just like the First Time "IndyWatch Feed National"

This morning I went to the Australian Royal Commission’s Facebook page and posted this on five of their articles:

“ Justice James Wood in Australia presided over the Royal Commission into his own VIP pedophile network. How is Australia ANY different than the US or the UK – who are ALSO having to deal with their cover-ups into this huge, organized, and well-funded child abuse and pedophile trafficking ring? What exactly are you guys doing about YOUR issues regarding this- and if nothing- then WHY?”

As a result- I have now found myself banned from this page on Facebook. What this tells me is that THIS royal commission- which is the second of its type in Australia- is desperately trying to pull ANOTHER cover-up- like they did with the first one- where Justice James Wood- an accused pedophile- headed it and made all of the allegations go away the first time. These people have no concept of honor- nor transparency- and foolishly believe that banning people like myself- and Fiona Barnett- who has brought these allegations to light and has ALSO found herself banned, will make these issues go away. However, people don’t like their governments raping and killing their children- and they like their elected officials covering it all up probably even less. But, since they are doing their best to prevent anyone from getting this information- is seems pretty obvious that they are doing now what they did before- and are trying to make the allegations go away and make those who are alerting the public to this- to shut our mouths. Won’t work- but hey- they get an A for effort.

Blocking people who are exposing this mess is an EXCELLENT indication that they are trying to enact another cover-up. Just as the Uk has done and is doing. Just like the US has done and is doing. And why is this being done? So our elite can traffic, rape, and murder your children. If you are okay with this- then I suggest you...
