Proud Foot Words: Australian Women Writers Reading Challenge, 2015 – all in the past. "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

It’s wrap up time for my Australian Women Writers Reading Challenge reading experience for 2015, for me that means time to announce yet again what a slow reader I am. MY NAME IS JULIE AND I AM A SLOW READER. … Continue reading

Media releases - North East Forest Alliance: FORESTRY CORPORATION MUST PAY FOR ILLEGAL WHIAN WHIAN LOGGING "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

The North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) is outraged that the Forestry Corporation is refusing to pay fines of $11,000 for bulldozing a road through exclusion areas for Koalas and threatened plants, and that the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) will not make them pay.

NEFA is calling on Premier Baird to intervene to provide justice to communities traumatised by the Forestry Corporation's construction of an illegal road under the watch of the EPA and police guard.

Natural Newstead: Berigora "IndyWatch Feed Cvic"

With most of the scientific names of Australian birds derived from Latin or Greek words, it’s great to come across one that recognises the language of indigenous Australians. Berigora is the Aboriginal name for the Brown Falcon Falco berigora, a common raptor of the plains country around Newstead. This individual allowed me within ten metres yesterday afternoon – it was using the fence line for perches from which to chase grasshoppers and was not that keen to move far in late afternoon heat. What a beautiful raptor!

Andrew Bartlett: Onward (& upward?) "IndyWatch Feed Seq"

Just as well my New Year resolutions of 2015 didn’t include blogging more, as I only did 9 posts all year. Having said that, 6 of those blog posts were in January, so maybe I did make that resolution without remembering it – one of the benefits of not writing resolutions down I guess.

I did write a couple of resolutions down last year – to try to do more to reduce the impact and power of hate-mongers in our country, and to try to have fewer people claiming there is a budget emergency to justify cuts to social services and income support. I feel like I didn’t do enough as I should have on either front – I didn’t expect that I would be able to single handedly achieve these outcomes, just do more things to help push the tide in a better direction – so perhaps writing these things down doesn’t make such a difference after all.

But I’ll have another try at doing better at both in 2016. Hate-mongering has definitely got worse in the last twelve months, and even though Tony Abbott is no longer our national leader and thus less able to facilitate this from quite such an influential position, he is also now more freed up to give more explicit voice to such things himself and to give more direct encouragement/support to his far too many fellow travellers.

And whilst the term ‘budget emergency’ might have gone a little bit out of fashion – not least because the Liberal/Nationals have shown themselves to be complete failures at budget managers, even on the terms they themselves set – there is certainly no let up in governments and commenta...

North Coast Voices: Global warming and climate change are very real - unless you are staunchly sticking your head in the sand "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

That perennial verbal battle over the existence of climate change continued in The Daily Examiner letters section right up to the end of last year.

These views were published on 14, 17 and 23 December 2015 and, as usual Perring and Ibbotson didn't let little things like science and historical fact get in the way:

Ted's a believer

Ted Strong would well know that the IPCC "bible" has been rewritten many times to cover up some of the more elaborate porkies put forward by many of the elite scientists....

Geelong Visual Diary: Rev Peceli Ratawa has passed away. "IndyWatch Feed Geelong"

With great sadness I write that my husband died last Sunday morning as the sun rose - in his bed, in his house, without drama, just quietly in his sleep. He had been ill for a while but still had a great Christmas with family a few days earlier. The funeral was held in Geelong on New Year's Eve, 49 years anniversary of our marriage in Lautoka in 1966. It's a difficult time for us but we know that he has gone to God as he was always confident in his Christian faith.

The eulogy that I wrote and delivered:

When I asked, “Do you believe in god.”

she said “No there is only a devil. If there was a god bad things would not happen.”

“You don’t believe the stories in the bible?”

“Not all the stories.”

“Why not?”

“Because it was written by men for men they made God a man. There is no missus God.”
“So what do you believe?”

“I believe greed is a sin, if there was not greed everyone would have enough and be happy.”

“Is greed the cause of all the problems in the world?”

“Ignorance, fear and greed are the causes of all evil, all good things are the result of kindness.”

Anti-racism beyond anti-facism

anti-racismWhat is to be done? There has been any number of anti-fascist actions in the last year. In the prior to, and after each it has been agreed while the fascists have to be confronted, they are not the main enemy.

How is racism to be fought in Sydney. In the context of acolonial settler society? And done so in a way that does not reinforce liberal democracy?

08:16 In Islam the fecal matter rises to the top "IndyWatch Feed Capricornia"

That’s the same little grand mufti who recently arrived back from a Hezbollah promotion and a Hamas conference on the Gaza strip

by Larry Pickering

Islam needs to be “named, shamed and dealt with,  either fit in or f*ck off”

That’s the same lying little Arab who today refused to name the execution of Police worker Mr Cheng an act of terrorism…“I don’t know, I need more proof, it’s still being investigated”, he said through his interpreter. I suppose it could have been a Presbyterian kid called Farhad Jabar who was yelling Allahu Akbar while trying to shoot pigeons for a Friday barbeque.

During his hour long waffling Press conference today Turnbull read straight from the incompetent Security Agencies’ written instructions: “For Christ’s sake don’t say anything to upset them or they might kill someone else and, to be honest, we don’t have a bloody clue who… so don’t make our job harder.”
The Security Agencies’ handbook now reads, “For terrorism say politically motivated”.
Turnbull’s message du jour, was an ad nauseam “mutual respect”. Well, respect is earned not gifted and certainly not to people who have no respect for us or our country. Perhaps Abbott was right to imply that Islamic leaders are liars.

Perhaps Abbott went to the trouble of reading the Koran, perhaps he knew of the law of taqiyyah where Muslims are required to lie to non-Muslims if it will further the cause of Islam.

“Muslims must lie to gain the trust of non-believers in order to draw out their vul...

The Witches Kitchen: In Season – Grapes, and making Mosto Cotto "IndyWatch Feed Northcoast"

grape vine

The grapes are hanging thick and heavy in our pergola.  Such a useful plant.  In winter the bare vines let the north western afternoon sun stream onto the verandah, warming the floor and creating a nice spot for proving bread or sitting with a book.  In spring the fresh, delicate leaves make dolmades, wonderful lunch or picnic or party food.  In summer the vines are thick with leaves blocking the afternoon sun and making cool green shade.  And giving us grapes.

I don’t know what variety this vine is – it’s over twenty years old now and my record keeping wasn’t real good then.  I do remember that it has been bearing well since my kids were very little, which means it must have borne w
